Music has been a huge part of my life. Going into the Capstone project, seniors are encouraged to pursue a question of inquiry that “will guide our work.” My original idea was to take broken trumpets and upcycle them into lamps. It was a solid idea but lacked impact. A major part of the Capstone project is how it impacts our communities around us. Why is music so prevalent in society anyways? I broadened my thinking and came across the question of “Why and how is music so important to one’s life?” I decided on restoring used trumpets and donating them to kids in my local Indonesian community. I presented my plan to Braskem in which I got full funding to restore 3 trumpets.

I came to a realization that the tools used for instrument repair were quite advanced and expensive. My knowledge was also not up to par. However, as in Capstone fashion, I learned as I went. Through different articles, forums, and YouTube videos I was able to learn different repair methods and created my own cheaper version. Using two aluminium rods I was able to smooth out the dents of the trumpet bells. I could disassemble and reassemble a trumpet by heart and learned how to solder trumpet joints and slides. I gained a better understanding of the intricacies of trumpets and the beauty in its creation. In the end, I was able to have 3 finished restored trumpets to give to kids in the community.

One initiative that was brought up by the School District in partnership with Temple was the Symphony of a Broken Orchestra. The idea behind the initiative was that the School District has a room/rooms full of broken instruments. To fix these instruments, the initiative asks donors to “sponsor” an instrument to pay for its repairs fees and to be able to give them back to the community. This source talks about an event they did, where they assembled an orchestra ranging from ages from 9 to 82 to perform. I will use this source to show progress done in the community, and I have considered talking to this organization. As it is written by the New York Times, I trust this source.

Gill, Charlotte C. “Music Education Is Now Only for the White and the Wealthy | Charlotte C Gill.” The Guardian, Guardian News and Media, 27 Mar. 2017, www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/mar/27/music-lessons-children-white-wealthy.

Much of the problem of musical education is the high costs. Lessons can run up to a dollar a minute and instruments are very expensive. The barrier to entry scares off many families and kids. This articles details the problems of viewing music as an elite luxury. The subject needs diversity and more people need to understand there are ways of learning without shelling big dollars. I will use this source to show how important it is in giving kids the opportunity to play an instrument for free and how I can hopefully spark a musical interest in kids lives.

Graham, Kristen A. “Some Philly Schools Have Rich Arts Programs, and Others Have None. How Do You Fix It?” Philly.com, Philly.com, 17 Oct. 2017, www.philly.com/philly/education/why-do-some-philly-schools-have-rich-arts-programs-and-others-none-at-all-arts-mapping-cultural-education-instrumental-music-orchestra-art-20171017.html.

Since 2013, the School District has been trying to build its music program. However, much like the District’s others problems, the programs are disparate throughout all the schools. There are schools in the district like GAMP and CAPA which have amazing music programs, while there are other schools who have no music programs. I will use this source to prove the stats amongst different schools to see who receives funding and to prove the disparity amongst schools and the decision to give them to kids who necessarily aren’t exposed to music education in their public schools. As it is written by the Philadelphia Inquirer, the source is pretty reliable.

Holcomb, Mac. Girard Academic Music Program, gamp.philasd.org/faculty-and-staff/.

This source details personal relationships I have formed throughout my years of schooling. I went to GAMP for middle school. Here I met many teachers like Mr.Holcomb who excelled in musical repairs had extensive knowledge on all types of musical instruments. I know that I will come across roadblocks in my repairs and it is my hope that I will have people like Mr.Holcomb who I can hit up and ask for help. I also know a number of music teachers throughout the district. As my cited source, I used the school’s directory which lists him as the school’s band director.

“How To Clean A Trumpet.” TrumpetHub, www.trumpethub.com/how-to-clean-a-trumpet/.

This source details a step-by-step process on how to properly clean a trumpet. When starting with the restoration process, the first step is to clean the instrument and assessing the damage. The point of this source is to gain a better understanding of this process so I can start off the restoration with a great start. This should be a fairly simple as not many specialty tools are needed to clean the trumpet, hence why am I starting off with the trumpet. In regards to the source, TrumpetHub is a blog about trumpets and has a knowledgeable community on all things trumpet.

Instructables. “Giving a New Life to an Old Cornet/Trumpet.” Instructables.com, Instructables, 15 Nov. 2018, www.instructables.com/id/Giving-a-new-life-to-an-old-CornetTrumpet/.

This source is an Instructables step-by-step process of a person restoring his trumpet/cornet. In this situation, the restoration job wasn’t as complex/difficult as the trumpet did not have too many problems with it. The man, known as “hobbyman,” includes videos and detailed photos throughout his process. I will use this process as a baseline as I want to start off restoring an instrument with not too many problems. I figure that I should start off simpler, and then go more complex if I feel like I can. Although Instructables is not the most credible source, it is not necessarily needed for my project.

McKinstry, Aileen. Why America Needs to Continue Funding Music Education in Public Schools. pp. 1–10, Why America Needs to Continue Funding Music Education in Public Schools.

This source is a journal published by Penn State University. It makes the argument for keeping music in public education. In contrast to others, the source is backed by an institution like Penn State and is very fact based. It includes good graphics and a number of great statistics to further prove the impact of musical education in schools. I will use this source as the academic journal to fulfill the requirement of a reputable source. Furthemore, the source provides a real world example of the lack of funding and the writer brings a personal story into her argument.

Muse, Queen. “Silencing the Music at Philly Schools.” NBC 10 Philadelphia, NBC 10 Philadelphia, 21 June 2013, www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/Philly-Students-Face-Uncertainties-School-Cutbacks-Music-212290071.html.

The Philadelphia School District is no stranger to budget cuts. Ever since middle school, the topic at the beginning of every school year was the possibility of losing this, that, or the next thing. This source is an NBC news article on one of the major budgets cuts in 2013. At this time, a lot of music programs were cut out, and the students were the ones that had to suffer. I plan to use this source to explain the lack of musical education in Philadelphia schools and why it needs to change. This will provide my capstone some background information for others to see.

The United States Army Field Band. “What Not To Do: Trumpet Instrument Repair.” YouTube, YouTube, 19 June 2012, www.youtube.com/watch?v=3n6wAtZz3wA.

This source is a YouTube video provided by the United States Army Field Band. Going into this project, I believe it is advantageous for me to watch as much content on these repairs as I can while working. However, what is different about this source is that it details the common mistakes of trumpet repairs, instead of the step-by-step process of how to fix trumpets. I will use this source as a way to strengthen my knowledge and avoid common mistakes during this process. This source is pretty credible as it was posted by a YouTube verified U.S. Army channel.

Tom Barnes. “The Scientific Reasons We Should Teach Music to Kids in School.” Mic, Mic Network Inc., 25 Oct. 2015, mic.com/articles/94992/the-scientific-reasons-we-should-teach-music-to-kids-in-school#.WghkcCfzY.

This source details the scientific proof of the benefits of musical education in schools. While the NBC article focuses on the issues of the Philadelphia School District, this source looks at the issue at a much larger scale as it describes the other issues from school districts around the country. It details the cognitive benefits of musical education and mentions various studies on students benefiting from musical education. I will use this source to further strengthen my argument on the reason for musical education and the reason why I believe in my capstone’s importance. Although I am not that familiar with the source, the writer does cite all of his information and provides direct links to his sources.

For my senior Capstone Project, I wanted to help the thousands of homeless people in the city of philadelphia. I had first wanted to make a bed out of something recyclable, so I had chose car tires. I had then pitched my idea to Braskem and got tons of support from the company and from family and friends, but it was a short lived dream because it was not possible to get the tires professionally cut the way that I needed. So now onto a new idea I had thought of making something lightweight and affordable so I had chose a bed made out of PVC. I had lots of trouble with getting the bed to sustain weight and also support itself and also a person. After multiple design changes and testing I had come up with a final design that met all the goals that I needed. I plan to donate my bed to a homeless shelter because there are hundreds of homeless people turned away from shelters because of lack of beds. My bed would provide another resting place, but also the ability to pack it up and make it easy for storage.

For my Senior Capstone Project, I wanted to create something that would help me and other people living in the city using the knowledge of tools and Engineering principles I have acquired over the past four years. I knew that transportation around the city of Philadelphia was a major struggle for lot's of people, considering public transport is unreliable and owning a car isn't plausible. I also knew that as a freshman in college next year, whatever this mode of transportation would be, it would have to be campus friendly. When met with these constraints, one vehicle, in particular, stood out to me, the electric skateboard. After doing a bit of research online, I knew I could make my own board using RC supplies for around 1/4 the price of those on the market. However, as I soon found out, it wouldn't be as easy as ordering parts and putting them together. Most of the parts that I needed were shipped overseas and needed to be modified to fit my components. This lead me to use many of the tools I became familiar with through robotics and Engineering, such as the lathe, mill, and drill press. In order to successfully complete this project, I also had to learn about RC components and electrical circuits. I even cut out my own board using CAD and the CNC router. In the end, the board I made may not have as long of a range or go as fast as the boards on the market, but considering my budget I am still proud of what I accomplished.

Carolina Ortiz Capstone

Taking care of my sick grandfather exposed me to the hardships that many senior citizens have to face. Not only with their health but in a society that doesn’t seem to fully value them. My curiosity and want to help the nursing home community led me to do research how to improve their wellbeing. Looking through the internet I found many sources which showed that senior citizens face a high risk of depression and that a good way to help prevent that is with creative activities. Therefore I decided to make my capstone project a set of “creative workshops” for residents at The Watermark on Logan Square. In total, three of the four times I went to see them I hosted “creative workshops”. On two occasions we created tissue paper stained glass window decor and in my latest visit we decorated flower pots for flowers. They’ve told me how excited they are to see me and with each visit I noticed a boost in their mood. For me, the most heartwarming day was when everyone saw the flowers I had bought. All of their faces lit up with happiness like I hadn’t seen before, a reminder of why I chose my capstone. Thanks to the funding on behalf of Braskem I was able to create a Capstone project which I enjoyed doing and was able to positively impact the lives of others. Creating bonds that I am excited to keep. Bibliohraphy Anderson, Jeff. “Inside Assisted Living Art Therapy Programs.” Senior Assisted Living Guides: Find Senior Care A Place for Mom, 9 Nov. 2018, www.aplaceformom.com/blog/2-28-14-inside-assisted-living-art-therapy-programs/. This source showed me the way in which art can help the senior citizen community. As well as what activities are good for them and what they help in specifically. This also gave me a good variety of activities no matter who I will be working with. Depression in the Elderly: Symptoms, Causes, Treatments. (n.d.). Retrieved January, 2019, from https://www.webmd.com/depression/guide/depression-elderly#1 This source is a well known medical site which helps people know more about an illness or many other health related things. Since I will be working in a nursing home I personally used this source to know more about the depression which exists in the elderly community. Finding that this can actually lead to many other bad things. I had heard from other people that this was a big issue but this source allowed me to get more information which I believe is trustworthy. Even though this information is not “good” it has allowed me to feel like my project might actually have a real impact on at least the day of the people I’ll be working with. “Fine Motor Skill Activities for Seniors.” Medicalopedia, 28 Mar. 2018, www.medicalopedia.org/6506/fine-motor-skill-activities-for-seniors/. One of the most important things to everyone are motor skills. However, these are also one of the main things that the elderly community loose first. Which is why in my activities this is something that I will need to take into consideration. Hannemann, B. T. (n.d.). Creativity with dementia patients. Can creativity and art stimulate dementia patients positively? Retrieved January, 2019, from https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16439826 This source is the website for the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health and is the reason I found it to be credible. Additionally it is the reason I found another one of my sources to be valid since this was linked on it. I chose to look into this one because it is about an actual study that was done about patients with dementia and its connection to creativity. I was able to see the way that my project connected in a way to another project that actually exists and I found that to be pretty interesting. Furthermore, it helped me think of a way to have my Capstone gather some sort of data in regards to the work that I will be doing. “Improving Fine Motor Skills In Elderly.” Interim HealthCare, www.interimhealthcare.com/albuquerquenm/blog/improving-fine-motor-skills-in-elderly/. One again this was another source based on the motor skills for the elderly. Reading this source allowed me to gain more clarity on the topic. Inc. 10 Tips for Educating Elderly Patients, 1 May 2019, www.hcpro.com/HOM-288902-6962/10-Tips-for-Educating-Elderly-Patients.html. This source allowed me to have a straightforward list of how to teach the elderly. After reading this I understood better how important it was for me to know how to teach them and be patient with them in every way. “Senior Activities | Activities for Seniors in Assisted Living Communities.” SeniorLiving.org, 6 Apr. 2018, www.seniorliving.org/life/activities/. This source gave me a good broad idea of activities for senior citizens which I will be using when I meet all of the residents I will be working with. I will be able to present some to them and gauge their interests. Stahl, A. (2018, August 12). Here's How Creativity Actually Improves Your Health. Retrieved January, 2019, from https://www.forbes.com/sites/ashleystahl/2018/07/25/heres-how-creativity-actually-improves-your-health/#5f7b5fd213a6 As this was one of my first sources I was skeptical of its credibility at first but found that companies and even some one my teachers saw it as credible, therefore, I went on and looked into it. One of the first things that grasped my attention was the title of, “Here's How Creativity Actually Improves Your Health”, because of the direct connection which it clearly has to my project as the people I am working with are recovering from one thing or another. By reading the contents of this article I was able to find five detailed ways in which th creativity helps health. They were not all involving building but I still found it allowed me to have a better understanding of this concept and was able to find more sources of actually studies that back up the article. “Teaching Older Adults.” EuroMed Info, www.euromedinfo.eu/teaching-older-adults.html/. In my capstone I will not only be doing “crafts” with residents i will be trying to teach them how to do certain things. This source showed me some ways to be able to teach and communicate with them with more ease for myself as well as them. “10 Stimulating Activities for Alzheimer's Patients.” Alzheimers.net, 20 July 2018, www.alzheimers.net/2014-03-06/stimulating-activities-for-alzheimers-patients/. Not knowing the exact demographic of the senior citizen community that I will be working with I find it valuable to get to know about some illness specific activities that i can know how to do. Thankfully I found this site which gives a good list of suggested activities for people with Alzheimer's

For my capstone I decided to challenge myself by learning how to code through python, and through that create a project that could be used by others. My first goal throughout the capstone process was to gain a basic understanding of the python programming language. My main methods of learning was through books, Youtube tutorials, website tutorials, and the most helpful of them all was looking at the code of others.

I already kind of knew what I wanted my final project to be when I started the learning process. I wanted it to be an automated script or in other words a bot. I decided to make a Reddit Bot. The bot looks at a thread for comments containing the name of a song within curly brackets. It then will respond to the comment with a Spotify link that will instantly take you to the song on Spotify’s website.

My Capstone is an electronic GPS device that is designed for a college student when they are on campus in case of a situation they have the choice to press a button on a keychain and when the press the button it allows campus security to know there location. I started this project to do two things, Learn how to code and to create something that could possible impacts a community in a positive way. I started this project know using the knowledge that I had on from sophomore year and I built off of that. I learned more about the different type of wifi shields and Arduino that are out there on the market that is being used for personal and professional uses. I also learned about different programming languages like C++ and how code interfaces with a different type of interfaces for data storage and collection. The reason that I decided to market my capstone to colleges student was based on my sister and the story she told me about her time at the temple and the different strategies that her sorority put in place to make sure that the people apart of the sorority were ok when they walked outside. I pitched my Idea for a capstone to Braskem to see if I could get money to make it into a reality, They gave me the money that I asked for and a Mentor. This allowed me to Make my capstone into a reality where I could test and market my product. Throughout my capstone, it came clear to me and my mentors that I was not an expert at understanding coding every well. Even with the trouble of still learning code I push thought with help with my mentor teaching me about reading the code and working through debugging different codes.  While my capstone isn’t at the scope that I wanted I am satisfied with my results.

Sofia Powers Capstone

Posted by Sofia Powers in CTE Senior Capstone · Kamal/Shagin/Ugworji · Wed on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at 9:00 pm

Growing up in the public school system, I noticed that studies became very compartmentalized and creative applications were specifically reserved for students in outside programs or who were pursuing a career entailing those applications. This continues to cause many students who are unaccustomed with creative expression to believe that they are not inherently creative and therefore cannot be creative, simply due to a lack of opportunity. My intention for my capstone was to refresh students with creative applications of building to increase confidence in student’s ideas and push them to think outside the box through fun building challenges. I created an initial survey to understand student’s notions about creativity and leadership. I then advertised for a club meeting by creating posters and hanging them in the school. I created a series of three prompts where teams of approximately 5 students had to work under time constraints and with limited household materials to build a tower, weight-bearing bridge, and ball transport system. The activities were designed to be fun and low stress, but engaged participants with their competitive side. I learned about the challenges of taking a coaching role versus my typical teammate role in encouraging and offering constructive but elusive feedback. I was able to improve my own creative skills by brainstorming possible solutions to decide appropriate materials for them to use. Each of these challenges pushed the participants to question traditional methods and instead search for loopholes.

Barras, Colin. “Future - Can You Learn to Be Creative?” BBC News. March 14, 2014. Accessed January 30, 2019. http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20140314-learn-to-be-creative. This article analyses studies on teaching and learning creativity and takes the stance that creativity should be salvaged through teaching. Levels of creativity are being crushed in school age children due to to the increase of importance of standardized test scores and creativity is currently only being truly taught at a university level when it may be too late. This article explores nontraditional methods and courses that foster creativity as its importance re-emerges in the workforce. I will use these findings as a driving force in my own work to re-integrate creativity into the minds of young people.

Creative Competitions. Scoring for Spontaneous. PDF. Glassboro: Creative Competitions, Inc., 2010. This score sheet offers two categories: Creativity and Teamwork. The creativity score sheet specifies how to be elusive when stating the problem so one solution is not encouraged by the language of the problem. Although I will not be using numerical values to assess my club’s solutions, I can assess their creativity on this scale to offer feedback. The teamwork score sheet describes a range of optimal cooperation and collaboration to team domination and dissonance. This document will help me encourage good team dynamics and help me recognize issues within the group.

Destination Imagination. Four Free Instant Challenges. PDF. Cherry Hill: Destination Imagination, Inc., 2014. This source is intended for teams to use in preparation for the “instant challenge” portion of the competition. It offers four prompts, two of which are Hands-On and include materials, setup, and possible scoring. I will use these prompts as a basis for my own and especially the materials and setup to acquire their counterparts for my own original problems. These example problems spark my ability as they demonstrate extensions of very basic prompts, such as requiring that an otherwise basic tower must touch four separate taped off sections of floor. These give me a basis of steps I can take to make my own work more complex.

DiscoverDesign Staff. “Design Process.” DiscoverDesign. 2018. Accessed February 04, 2019. https://www.discoverdesign.org/handbook. This article explains the six steps of the engineering design process. It offers a short description of each step and basic applications. I will use this process to design the optimal solutions to my prompts. The most important part that is not included in Odyssey of the Mind style prompts is the final two steps of Feedback and Improve. This process will serve as a reminder to integrate those steps as they are important to SLA’s core values and curriculum and their integration will help students apply their skills.

Kouzes, James M., and Barry Z. Posner. The Leadership Challenge. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass, 1987. This source is a book demonstrating the five practices of leadership, those being Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart. The first chapter of this book focuses on two interviews that demonstrate struggles to lead and tactics that helped manage a group, one being Lindsay Levin of White’s Vehicle Repair and Ted Turner of Turner Broadcasting System. Levin’s exemplary leadership is characterized by gaining small successes as a team to build trust in the team, committing to teaching strategies to members, and recognizing success through awards. She also speaks of a technique of “zapping vs sapping,” where the leader boosts a member’s motivation by recognizing good work. Turner had success with leadership by encouraging risk-taking creativity and creating a company store to increase exclusivity and pride. While my project will be less run like a company and not commercial product driven, I will use these techniques on a small scale in running a club of members that must work as a team each meeting.

Llove. Hands-On Problem: The Strongest Link. PDF. Virginia: Odyssey of the Mind, 2006. This source offers an Odyssey of the Mind-style, hands-on, spontaneous problem involving two parts. They entails creating a chain on which a cup full of weights are held. This problem demonstrates the difficulty factor of having one time period to build and a second to alter or challenge the structure. I will use this problem as a basis to create two part problems where added complexities challenge teams after their initial build to extend their creativity. I can also use the model of a bridge-like problem as the underlying build challenge.

Mandel, Brett. “Coaching Spontaneous.” Interview by author. February 2019. The interviewee is my Odyssey of the Mind coach. He was a participant of the program in his youth and has been coaching Odyssey of the Mind for about a decade. I will use this interview to understand his experience coaching students who are high school aged in a problem solving context. I will ask questions about how to give constructive feedback during short creativity prompts and how to make sure students are listening to each other’s ideas. He will also have good ideas about where to get materials for hands-on problems.

Micklus, C. S., and Samuel W. Micklus. Lots of Problems, Many Solutions. Sewell, NJ: Creative Competitions, 2007. This book serves as an introduction to the Odyssey of the Mind program and offers many official verbal and hands-on spontaneous prompts. The introduction gives an overview of creative problem solving, and I will use these concepts to understand the basis and apply it to my club. I will use later chapters to base my original problems off of. The most useful piece of information this book offers is a detailed site setup, which is very important to solving the prompt.

Nelson, Robert. “Why It Is (Almost) Impossible to Teach Creativity.” The Conversation. January 09, 2019. Accessed January 31, 2019. http://theconversation.com/why-it-is-almost-impossible-to-teach-creativity-105659. This article from an independent not-for-profit organization presents a controversial and cynical view on creativity to a wide and unspecified audience. It presents problem solving as a lesser application of creativity as problems serve as an anxious place. I will use this view to dispute the stressful or limited applications of creativity through making my problems have more than just one feasible solution. I will offer opportunity for creative growth by rewarding risk-taking even if a solution fails. This club is meant to become a space for students to exercise creativity, not to place a stressor on specific solutions.

Perkins, T., J. Otte, and S. Riggs. The “Unofficial” On-line Coaches’ Training. PPT. Glassboro: Odyssey of the Mind, 2013. This presentation begins to prep outsiders on how to coach teams specifically for the Odyssey of the Mind competition and season. It covers the principle of divergent vs convergent problem solving and promotes the concept that divergent problem solving allows students to take creative measures and calculated risks in their solution. The source also states the responsibility of the coach to lead by asking questions. I will use this technique when coaching my club, asking constructive questions to allow students to work among themselves without the guidance of concrete answers that would lead them un-creatively to the solution. The presentation also places an emphasis on only allowing constructive criticism between teammates, which is another sentiment I will utilize.

Kiah Johnson Capstone

Posted by Kiah Johnson in CTE Senior Capstone · Kamal/Shagin/Ugworji · Wed on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at 8:59 pm

Like many other medical conditions, chronic migraines and headaches occur in about two to three million people in the United States, one of them being my mother.
For my capstone, I decided that my overall goal was to create a portable massaging tool that helps with headaches and/or migraines. This gave me the chance to take my passions of both physical therapy and computer science and apply it to something useful. With the help of many research papers, I decided to focus on the four pressure points: two on the neck, and two on the forehead, to help release the pain, by decreasing the intensity of the headache.
The most important part of this project was getting familiar with coding. This was the first code that I had to build and structure myself, and it was difficult. Just figuring out the first code for finding frequency took about four weeks, as I was trying to gain knowledge of coding through Arduino references sheets and different libraries. At one point, I got stuck on one part of the code for several days. Then, I had to make another code for the actual vibration using the Circuit Playground Express and a Haptic Motor Driver, as the power of the headband. The vibration motors were connected to the power, all soldered. After that, I placed the circuit onto a plastic material, that was easy to slide throughout the newly made headband (with zipper for easy access to the circuit and controls).

This source provides the full language of code, understanding, and writing it. This information can easily be used to gain early knowledge on what exactly it is, and getting started on learning one of the languages. In skimming through, the beginning instructs the learner to always follow instructions and make sure it is fun for him/her, for it’s easier to learn when one is fully engaged and eager to learn about something he/she cares about.

Accessed January 24, 2019. https://www.nationwidechildrens.org/family-resources-education/700childrens/2017/12/migraine-and-tension-headaches-using-massage-to-ease-the-pain. This source provides early information about the differences between a migraine and a headache, explained by a professional, hinting on what needs to happen to treat them both. The author comments the initial signs of each and goes into deep detail with symptoms and even giving statistics on each about how many people suffer from both, or even confuse the two. It stresses the importance of knowing and telling a doctor of some sort, so help can be provided. In fact, the article does hint the readers about the success massages have had on people, especially migraine sufferers and children.

This source is a series of journal entries that shows multiple experiments of massage therapy being utilized on people with any type of head pain: migraines or just regular headaches. The difference between this one and the previous, is that this one was done in both the United States and New Zealand, both having the frequencies of the head pain being reduced between 31% and 71%. Along with these conclusions, the numbers can be used for programming and calculating the intensity of the massage tool, how fast it vibrates, and it would be simpler understand the effects of the tool, even with not enough testers to use the tool.

It also goes deeper into the fact that it is possible to have a self-massage for migraines, describing the different types of massages and what is useful for those with frequent migraines. In addition, it provides warnings as to who can/cannot use this therapy, for their health, which helps conclude that there needs to be a safer way to give the therapeutic massages. The writer of the article is not a doctor herself, but professional doctors, therapists, and college students are referenced throughout the article to prove the discoveries.

The video is showing a migraine massage being done on a patient, explaining each of their movements, along with the muscles being used and what they do to participate in the intensity of migraines. It also shows several different massages being done, all including the face and the neck. This describes the process in which needed to understand how much pressure and vibration goes into each movement and spot in which they used.

It demonstrates with pictures showing the exact spots that ease the intensity in migraines and headaches. This could eventually be used in the instruction manual, explaining the use and safety measures of the tool. It also links to video interviews of real people with migraines and how they feel after doing therapy and using these pressure points. In reading through the whole article, it was clear that the first step is to understand and determine the goals of the project, then more on to the materials and the experience one will need to be able to complete it. At the same time, it also encourages that one shouldn’t get easily frustrated and if there is a problem, to just look it up and see if anyone else has done anything like it. It also suggests to make a timeline for what needs to be done.

There are a total of three different studies, two of them involving deep tissue massages either once or twice a week for five weeks. The patient’s outcomes before, during, and after the massage, their migraine headache frequency, and their sleep quality was recorded everyday during the five weeks, which is shown within the source. With judging their vibration intensity, duration, and overall appearance, it also describes what it’s best used for in certain situations, talking about the motors and types of heads that is provided. This will make it easier to pick it flaws and see important components that will be needed with the project.

Jacobo Pastor Capstone

Posted by Jacobo Pastor in CTE Senior Capstone · Kamal/Shagin/Ugworji · Wed on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at 8:51 pm

Abstract:

During the past 6 months, I have struggled with the idea of what to do for my capstone. After thinking and rethinking, I came up with the idea of making a website where I would teach prospective SLA students some skills to survive the most rigorous benchmarks. I called my benchmark, "The SLA Survival Guide."
Everyone coming into Science Leadership Academy knows that it is a project based High School. This means that students come in with the idea of making thousands of projects throughout their high school career. Looking back, it sounded terrific  - No Tests! But little by little I realized that most of these projects needed to be done in a software that I hadn't use in my life. The purpose of this Capstone is to teach upcoming SLA students to learn some of the most common softwares teachers will ask their students to learn along the year. After watching my videos, students will be ready to create a fully polished document, video, and a handful of engineering softwares and shop tools.
As I was creating my capstone I realized that I could make this much bigger than it is. I want my capstone to be the beginning of a big community where students and teachers from SLA, can upload videos, documents, and other helpful knowledge to survive SLA. By doing so, we will enrich the learning experience as well as have this sense of community where students can work together to help each other.

SLA Survival Guide:

“3D CAD Design Software.” Getting Started | SOLIDWORKS, www.solidworks.com/

This source will help me get a better understanding of how Solidworks functions. At Science Leadership Academy Robotics Club I have been able to work first hand with the software. It has been 4 years learning and understanding almost most all functions which have guaranteed me a leading job on the team when Computer Aided Designing the different mechanisms. By no means I am a professional, I am currently still learning and this is why this source is important. Before teaching about a topic I would get informed the best I can.

“Try Fusion 360 for Free.” CAD Software | 2D And 3D Computer-Aided Design | Autodesk, Redshift EN, www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360/overview

Fusion 360 is a program that I am not that comfortable with. In my CTE Advanced
Engineering class, I have been able to learn along with other students basic skills of the program. This source is specifically helpful because it does not only give you an overview but it comes with hundreds of summaries and videos. In addition, it even provides practice problems that I can use in my videos in order to teach others.

Thingiverse.com. “Thingiverse - Digital Designs for Physical Objects.” By Noctiluxx -
Thingiverse, www.thingiverse.com/
This source is a website filled with innovative and unique done designs of 3D parts that I could use for my videos. I have found several designs that I can open on one of the CADs software I would teach and then print them and show them on the videos. I specifically like this website because it is not only engineering related but you can find hundreds of fun designs from your favorite movies, tv shows, cartoon, and even sports teams.

“Adobe Illustrator CC.” Adobe Captivate-Unlock The Future of Smart ELearning Design,
www.adobe.com/products/illustrator.html

In order to print an object on the laser cut, machine one must have their 2D design on Adobe Illustrator. Just as with Solidworks or Fusion 360, I am familiar with the program thanks to my CTE Advanced Engineering class but by no means, I am an expert in it. I am hoping that this source will help me get a deeper understanding of the software so I before teaching about a topic I would get informed the best I can.

Haslam, Karen. “You Can Create the next Blockbuster on Your Mac - Here's How!”
Macworld UK, Macworld UK, 6 July 2018,
www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/mac-software/imovie-mac-tips-3652888/

This source will hopefully help me set up guidelines for my video on iMovie. This source is not from apple because they didn’t have such a detailed description of the program. I really like this source specifically because of the detailed steps for each section. I am hoping that this source will help me get a deeper understanding of the software so I before teaching about a topic I would get informed the best I can.

“Adobe Photoshop CC.” Adobe Captivate-Unlock The Future of Smart ELearning Design, www.adobe.com/products/photoshop.html

This source is for the Adobe Photoshop video. Just as the Adobe Illustrator source, because it is from the same company, this source is very detailed and provide multiple examples, videos, and designs that will inspire me to create an aesthetic yet functional video. Along with this source, I will search up for other examples to make the Photoshop video the most useful possible.

Harris, Tom. “How Cameras Work.” HowStuffWorks, HowStuffWorks, 21 Mar. 2001,
electronics.howstuffworks.com/camera.htm

Being an engineer I know how mechanisms work, how structures function, or what materials will serve different conditions. I have never been taught how a camera works so hopefully, this source will help me function it. Without proper knowledge on the camera that I am using my videos won’t have the quality that I want them to have, which means that they won’t look as professional as I could make them. This source is especially useful because it is not focused on just one set of cameras which means that no matter the camera I use I will be able to make it function.

“How to Be Successful on YouTube in 10 Easy Steps.” Blue Fountain Media, Blue Fountain Media, 18 Oct. 2018, www.bluefountainmedia.com/blog/how-to-be-successful-on-youtube

Just as the “How Stuff Works” source, this source will be extremely important to understand common mistakes and tips in order to succeed with my youtube channel. To be successful it is important to understand what professional people have to say about the topic because since they are experts on the topic they can share valuable information which will hopefully help me get on the successful path. It is important to note that I want to prioritize a useful capstone rather than a successful one that won’t help others.

“Engineering Tools.” Young's Modulus of Elasticity for Metals and Alloys,
www.engineeringtoolbox.com/

This is probably one of the most resourceful tools that I would use in my capstone. Since I form part of the CTE Advanced Engineering class I must do my videos engineering related. Therefore, along with the videos I would like to provide the science behind them and this source will be a key factor in it. From temperature pressure to water movement to other physics laws, this source contains all of this useful information. I believe that providing the science behind this software or shop tools will really enhance the quality of my project and my understanding of the topic.

“How To Design A Website (Jan 2019) | 7 Essential Steps.” Best Website Builder Reviews for 2018, Best Website Builder Reviews for 2018 Best Website Builder Reviews - So You Can Pick the Perfect Website Builder for Your Unique Needs,
www.websitebuilderexpert.com/designing-websites/

Along with the videos on the different software I would like to publish those with a little descriptions on what the video is about as well as additional information and links to the topics discussed. To do this I will use a website, but without knowing how to properly make one and even more important design an appealing one, the capstone will not be up to my expectations. This source included a series of steps that will be very useful in this process.

Kamil Kielar Capstone

For my senior Capstone project, I had decided to create a foosball table which I hoped to donate to an after-school program or boys and girls club. Seeking Braskem funding in early February, I, unfortunately, received only partial funding for the continuation of my project. Working with a smaller budget than expected, I had begun to redesign my foosball table determined to complete my goal. Using plywood instead of solid wood, steel conduit instead of aluminum rod, and creating my own foosball players instead of purchasing them, I minimized the cost of the original table sevenfold. Originally the goal of the project had been to use woodworking techniques and joints in order to create a high-quality table, focusing much of my time of the creation of the table itself. Without the available funds, I made the decision to create my own foosball players which had taken a greater time than expected. First CADing (Computer Aided Design) my foosball player, machining halves out with a CNC router, gluing them together, sanding them down and finally drilling the hole for rod had been a tedious process which I underestimated and ended up spending a great deal of time on. In the end, I had created a stained and polished foosball table even if it hadn’t been the one I originally envisioned.

Foosball.com, www.foosball.com/tablebuildingguide.html. Accessed 25 Jan. 2019.

This source is of a website which had previously designed his own foosball table. This source is particularly helpful because it gives an idea of a possible budget I may have for this project. They had completed something similar and it seems that seems like this would be helpful as well to know the steps in which to complete the project. This source doesn't seem to have any biases because it is purely a description of the authors process and what he had learned along the way. The audience of this website seems to be anyone interested. The language is simple and easy to follow so this is really open to anyone.

“Background.” Analysis to Maximise the Efficiency of Anaerobic Digestion - Celignis Biomass Analysis Laboratory, www.celignis.com/feedstock.php?value=18. Accessed 25 Jan. 2019.

This is very thorough analysis hardwood and the different properties which it is made up of.  The company Celignis does many different specimen testing on biomass samples of all different types. This is a very scientific look into hardwood and the different material which make it up. It is for a highly educated audience that understands science and would be interested in this. There most likely is no bias in this source because this is a research company which needs to uphold their reputation and reliability. This company seems to have tests and analysis other than woul which shows that this is a large company.

This source tells you the physics behind a foosball table and the math that goes along with it. It uses the equation that are needed in order to show you how the rotational force of your arm is changed into work. This is very detailed explanation and the math seems to be very intricate. The audience is most definitely going to need to know physics equations and have an understanding in physics. This source most likely does not have any biases because this is just some analysis of the forces used when operating a foosball table.

This article talks about the production of plywood and the range of market value for it. The portion of the article which I had mostly talked about had been the quality of the plywood and the properties of the wood sold. The audience that this would be for is someone most likely in the business field wanting to know more about the plywood market. This is more of a business analysis but there are aspects which are useful to me in this project. There are not biases in this source because this is just a pure description of business of selling plywood.

Editor. “Woodworking Joints: Which Wood Joints Should You Use?” WoodWorkers Guild of America, Woodworkers Guild of America, 10 Dec. 2018, www.wwgoa.com/article/woodworking-joints-which-ones-should-you-use/. Accessed 25 Jan. 2019.

This article tells the readers about the vast number of wood joints that can be completes and how each of them are used structurally. The Woodworkers Guild of America is a large organization which has many members which receive information regularly. To a point this source is trying to promote itself to the audience and shine itself as this helpful and useful tool. The audience seems to be people who are beginning woodshop or maybe slightly higher like an amuatuer at woodworking. The article is simply written and easy to understand how each of the joints are made and how they can be used.

Gu, Jiyou. Cai, Zhiyong. “Development and Application of Wood Adhesives in China.” Wood Adhesives 2009: Plenary Session https://www.fpl.fs.fed.us/documnts/pdf2010/fpl_2010_gu001.pdf. Accessed 25 Jan. 2019.

This is a thorough analysis on the different types of wood glue and how they work in different applications. This is how different wood glues affects different types of wood and the strength curves of the glue. This is helpful to me because it helps me to see which glue would be the best for my application. The audience for this would be people who are in need of knowing how different wood glues have different strengths. This source most likely doesn't have any bias because this a research article. This has many different curves  and graphs which tell the audience info about the strength of the glues.

Neokentin. “Common Types of Wood Joints You Should Know • 1001 Pallets.” 1001 Pallets, 1001 Pallets, 16 Oct. 2018, www.1001pallets.com/common-wood-joints/. Accessed 25 Jan. 2019.

The organization 1001 Pallets is committed to reusing making projects out of wood pallets which isn’t always the highest of quality wood. They don’t seem to a for profit or profitable organization and they seem to care very much about their audience. Connecting to the Woodworkers Guild of America source, this source goes much more in depth about wood joinery and the different applications for it. This source talks very much about exactly how to make many of these different joints. It gives specific instruction along with the limitation of the joints. No bias seems to be present within the source.

“WOOD ANALYSIS.” What Why How RSS, what-when-how.com/forensic-sciences/wood-analysis/. Accessed 25 Jan. 2019.

Very in depth analysis on wood and wood identification. This is definitely for a highly educated audience which understands much information about forensics science. Saying that, this document explains everything from wood anatomy to wood identification. This goes very in depth along with detailed imagery of wood under a microscope. Seeing as this is a research study on wood, people have their own reputation they would like to preserve and seems like it would be very reputable. There doesn't seem to be any bias due to this being purely a research article.

“ Build Your Own Foosball Table .” Build Your Own Foosball Table | The Foosball Shop | TheFoosballShop.com, www.thefoosballshop.com/foosball-table.htm. Accessed 25 Jan. 2019.

This is an article which describes the process of how someone had already built a foosball table. This will be very helpful in terms of helping me with my process and how I should order things. This will be similar to the other source which had described making a foosball table in the sense that it will help me develop a budget for my project. The audience for this source will be anyone who wants to make a foosball table. This is not very complex language and I think this could be for almost anyone. In terms of biases, I don’t there are any biases because there isn’t a motive for the author to be biased.

Ülker, Onur. “Wood Adhesives and Bonding Theory.” Intech Open, IntechOpen, 23 Nov. 2016, www.intechopen.com/books/adhesives-applications-and-properties/wood-adhesives-and-bonding-theory.

This is a scientific study which explains different adhesives for wood. This will be important in my project because it will be important to know because understanding how good bonds together will be essential in my project. The audience for this is highly educated people who are interested in different properties and material science. There don’t seem to any biases in this source because it is a research study. This corporation has a reputation to uphold and they would not intentionally give bad information. This corporation has the name China on it and China is a big country which doesn't like to look bad.
