Stress and The Dangers of Homework

The anxiety of not completing an assignment that you have been stuck on for the past hour can be overwhelming, right? What if I told you millions of people feel the same way you do and there can be consequences of it, I’m not talking grade wise, I’m talking mentally. Homework as we have experienced causes a great amount of stress which can lead you to a poor mental state, sleep deprivation, and many more bad things. Which can be prevented by decreasing the amount of homework significantly and/or being taught how to combat such stress. [A couple of such ways is by managing time, controlling emotions, and monitoring your motivation.] (https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/EJ1054844.pdf)

A school can start to teach these things so life can be easier for the students, but not just for them though but their family and their teachers too. A study made in 2017 about [the effects of homework on middle class families] (https://digitalcommons.csp.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1069&=&context=cup_commons_grad_edd&=&sei-redir=1&referer=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.google.com%252Furl%253Fq%253Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fdigitalcommons.csp.edu%252Fcgi%252Fviewcontent.cgi%253Farticle%25253D1069%252526context%25253Dcup_commons_grad_edd%2526sa%253DD%2526source%253Deditors%2526ust%253D1616434140114000%2526usg%253DAOvVaw0FRSYatcLU9NO7fYRvpdUB#search=%22https%3A%2F%2Fdigitalcommons.csp.edu%2Fcgi%2Fviewcontent.cgi%3Farticle%3D1069%26context%3Dcup_commons_grad_edd%22) shows that homework is the leading cause of stress in the household because it’s hard to have a “healthy balance of homework and family life”. This stress and less family time can lead to troubles in a family, and might even lead to divorce if it is disruptive enough.

The Parent Teacher Association (PTA), suggests there to be ten minutes of homework per grade level which is seemed to not be followed, [some kindergarteners are getting up to] (https://www.healthline.com/health-news/children-more-homework-means-more-stress-031114) 25 minutes of homework per day when they even aren’t supposed to get homework at all according to the National Education Association (NEA), and some second and third graders are even getting 28-29 minutes of homework per day taken in a survey in rhode island. It just doesn’t affect younger grades [but college students as] (https://mellowed.com/homework-stress/) well.

homework-stress-college-students-statistics-760x964

[Chart] (https://mellowed.com/homework-stress/)

The stress can be overwhelming sometimes but the United States is not the only country with a homework problem, Italy, UK, France, and many more suffer the consequences. A survey taken in the UK, in March of 2020 shows that 66% of students in the age range of 8-17 said that “they felt most stressed about homework and/or exams” compared to everything else. Which is pretty alarming considering that this was a survey with almost 2,000 kids, and 66% of 2,000 is 1,320. Just imagine how many people are struggling with it as well on a global level.

Now you might be wondering how can we stop this monstrosity of stress, well looking at countries like [Finland, Japan, and South Korea] (https://www.geekycamel.com/countries-give-less-homework-theyre-successful/#:~:text=Finland,they%20are%20seven%20years%20old.) which are countries that give very little homework per week, ranging from 2.9 hours to 3.9. They mostly rely on trust in the teachers and students, more testing, and new ways to learn that is more beneficial for the students later in life. And it seems to have paid off, Finland, South Korea, and Japan seem to be at the [top in the world for Math and Science at the age of 15.] (https://www.bbc.com/news/education-37716005) So why don’t we start making the change to no homework? Well, that’s the next step, students should start to spread awareness and make petitions to the school board calling for change.

Homeless addicts

The topic that I chose to talk about is Homeless people in Philadelphia going through addiction. I know that not everyone thinks that homeless people are a big issue in today’s society but I do think it’s a big issue. There are lots of people that need help, who do not seek the right support they need. This topic is honestly major to me because I start to get emotional whenever I see a homeless person using any substance. After all, sometimes I feel the need to help them because I can not even imagine someone I know or a family member using substances and being homeless. It is honestly hard being in their position, even though most people did not choose to be in that position, few were either born into a family that dealt with substances of generations or had a past trauma. I think this problem is important because it could help others understand that other people have different lives and that not everything is what it seems like and to not judge. A personal connection that I have with this topic is that I live nearby people who are homeless and that are dealing with addiction. My goal in learning more about this project is to have a better understanding of how and why homeless people go through that and how hard it is that way I could teach others who are ignorant or just don’t understand how important this problem is in our community. A goal I have is to talk to some different services that help homeless people that deal with addiction and give them an idea that could help prevent people from becoming homeless addicts.

*This picture shows a group of people who went out just to feed homeless addicts and help them feel loved and comfortable. That way they are able to help them get out of addiction.( this inspires me!) *

While doing some research I saw that this issue was significant because many people in Philadelphia are homeless addicts. Although addiction isn’t always the reason why you’re homeless, It could expand the problem that led you to become a homeless person and start using substances. It is important because the population of homeless addicts is growing so much that now it’s accessible for young people to find and use and basically ruin their lives and not being able to be someone important in life. Young people like myself need to listen because this is a serious problem for whoever is living in Philadelphia. A lot of people died because of substances. Homeless people die because of substance because they either do not get the right help or need to stay away from it.

Homeless
Homeless

A young homeless addict girl asking for help.

Something important that you should know is that half of the people that become homeless go through things like for example being pressured into doing something, and because of that, they are later on introduced to substances while living in the streets. Now that’s not always the case some are homeless because they were introduced to substance early in there lives and then because of that became homeless but what everyone should know is that not every person who is homeless are dealing with substance they are many other different reasons why they are homeless and that is a myth that needs to stop because everyone thinks the same that every homeless person is an addict. This has impacted my understanding of homeless addicts even more because I did not know that substance could be a tool to help homeless people to help forget about past experiences and or traumas. What I’m wondering now is how people do not understand that addiction isn’t always the reason why they’re homeless. I learned so far that although addiction is either part of someone being homeless most of time people become homeless for just things that the governments does which is raise the rent to an apartment that makes it hard for that person to even pay that breaks my heart because losing a home or even a job must be really difficult and I couldn’t imagine that happening to someone I know. I read this small biography about a homeless women and she talked about how she came from a family that are addicts and how she is trying to do her best in telling other people to stop trying or even try substances because once you try you become an addict and many other people like her are trying to advise young people to follow their dreams and not become a nobody because drugs could ruin the possibility of having a great future. Like why can’t they put themselves in their position? What I’m hoping to learn later throughout this project is why certain people have a stereotype mentality of how and what a person is, by the way they physically look, and also if homeless addicts feel ashamed by the way others look at them.

Colorism In The Black Community

Why does colorsim even exist in the black community? Why should it matter if my sister is darker than me pr my brother is lighter than me. Our blackness shouldn’t define who and what we are as people, and by colorsim it separate the black community. Colorism is discrimination against individuals with a dark skin tone, typically among people of the same ethnic or racial group, and it doesn’t only happens in the black community it happens everywhere around the world. But in this case, in the black community this hold a big impact on darker skin women in particular because they are the bottom end of this.

In the media it shows how they view the black women as if she is one category and shes mostly always going to be light skin. https://amp.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2019/apr/09/colorism-racism-why-black-people-discriminate-among-ourselves this website talks about how the media and even in everyday life darker skinned people are treated differently than lighter skinned people. Colorism doesn’t work for light skinned people, they are the ones who benefit from it. The TV dark skinned best friend or the dark skinned character were always made “manly” or “ ghetto” and being gentle or kind. Colorism does appear in everyday life, a light skinned woman/ male is more likely to be married. Different pay rates are not the same if you’re darker skinned, if you are darker skinned you are more likely to to be prison time more than lighter skin.

https://sites.wp.odu.edu/bodylore/2019/03/04/colorism-within-the-african-american-community/ This site explains how what colorism is and how it started back in slavery “Colorism within the black community dates back to slavery, for the lighter men/women were considered to be “house ni*****” while the darker tones were outside in the fields. Is it safe to say the white man created color separation within the African-American society?” and Slave owners were more “nicer” to the indoor slaves because they were the off springs’ of slave owners due to the raping of women. Slave owners usually did not want to claim or recognize their illegitimate children therefore, they were given special privileges instead” the talks about how it shows in the media. how you see the main character is light skinned or white most of the time and darkskin is the second lead.

https://www.idsnews.com/article/2020/11/black-vocies-colorism-is-a-plague-in-the-black-community This site is actually an interview, the people who were interviewed were college students. The first question was have you ever experienced colorism before, James Stewart said, “I’ve personally not had to go through colorism that concerned me, but I’ve seen my friend go through it. Someone who happened to be, of course, African American was speaking about how they hate light skins.” I think this really speaks the truth because some people hate light skins because they are the Exception of being black. if you are a dark skin black girl you tend to see a process in which people don’t find you beautiful so they tend to get jealous and don’t like light skinned black women. They asked the same question to DeDjreanna Thames and they said, “Yes. I grew up in a mostly Black neighborhood. I had girls jump me growing up because I was too light. I was told I didn’t belong because my skin wasn’t dark. I was picked on a lot because I was very light.” This is interesting because colorism doesn’t work for lighter skin people, you benefit from it not being hated just because you’re light skin. They are the ideal type of black girl to be, they jumped you because they were envious of you, not because you were light skin.

https://www.litwi.org/blog/colorism-among-the-black-community This article brings up how colorism does exist and it does appear i the black community. It’s very toxic because some black men or men in general wouldn’t date dark skin women. The reason why i said women is dark skin men are fetishized and looked over into being “sexy” or “fine pieces of chocolate”. Dark Skin women don’t get fetishized unless they have some sort of “white features” then you would be considered “exotic”.” The “paper bag test” is often utilized in black spaces and the hiring of black people in the 19th and 20th centuries. If someone is the same color as or lighter-skinned than a paper bag, they would be allowed into space/considered for hire. If they were any darker than a paper bag, they would not be allowed in that space/considered for that job.” This made me sad because I remember my great grandfather told me about this. and how they had a brown paper bag to tell you if you are good or not. “shows that dark-skinned women are less likely to be married than lighter-skinned women.” Yes I remember reading about this, it’s crazy how people are so anti dark skin and don’t want to marry them just because their oppressors made them think that way. https://www.nccj.org/colorism-0 This site explains the difference between Colorism: Racism: And Discrimination: And telling how if you experience that you would know which one it would be. It states, “Skin tone was often the most important factor in applying for work as a person of color in the mid-20th century. Light skin was often reported on a resume ahead of any other information or experience.” This isn’t a surprise for me, a lot of dark skinned people get declined based on their skin color. “Dark skinned defendants are more likely to be convicted and receive the death penalty than lighter skinned ones. | MS Magazine” This is heartbreaking because it shows how colorism is ingrained in society, you don’t ask to be born but you still have to handle a world that will decline you just because you have darker skin. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4365794/ This source talks about how darker skin men were more discriminated against than lighter skinned men. “It is not surprising that early research conducted following the emancipation of slaves found that African Americans were influenced by colorism.” I feel like it’s black men and women should fix that in the community, it’s so ingrained in the black community that colorism is hidden by “ preference“ and they would often say “I like light skins because dark skins are….” This is colorism!! It doesn’t matter if you have a lighter skin tone you still are black at the end of the day. “Indeed this interdependent orientation may extend to African American constructions of masculinity ideals as well. For example, masculinity research suggests that African American manhood is often constructed relationally.” Some black men wants to date a light skin women because they do not want their baby to be dark, I heard in many cases that if black men wants kids they go for light skins because obviously they are the perception of beauty but also they are worried about how dark they’re baby is going to be, which is strange because skin color doesn’t matter if you make a baby, you could both be dark skin but comes out with a brown skin or a lighter skin baby.
