Advanced Art Slideshow

During this quarter, the majority of the art we drew was created by us. In the beginning of the quarter, we drew blind contour drawings which is a concept artists use to practice their drawing skills. Blind contour drawings are when you're looking at a an object and not at your paper and you attempt to draw the object as best as
you can. My other drawing after the contour drawing was a painting of my own creation. It represents how wounded the world is, and all we really do to fix it is "put a band aid on it." Metaphorically.

My personal preference for materials for materials and techniques is using larger paintbrushes to make soft undertone for the base. Let that dry. And then from there paint a lighter color on top. I do this because sometimes, colors don't mix very well. So instead of mixing them in a pallet, I just paint over what's already there.

• What important things happened during making art the quarter?
Something important that I learned is that you can make magic out of your mistakes. In my "Heal the World" drawing, I first attempted to draw the ground, I also attempted to draw first. But, turns out, the brown was more of a darker red. So instead of starting over, I made the red a little lighter and made it blood. It saved me so much time and frustration.

Art takes time. You can't rush it. I tried gunning through my assignments thinking that they were good enough to turn in but looking back, there are always improvements to be made.

Week 10 - • Artist's statement

Throughout quarter 2 we have created 6 different art pieces for every week. For the first two weeks I drew 10 different images without look at what I was doing called the Blind Contour. The things I drew was Rihanna, Freddy Krueger, Michael Jackson, Batman, Hulk, Cam Newton, A Demogorgon, and Pennywise. On week 3 I colored them all they best as I could to bring the picture out. Next, on week 4 the assignment was choose your own painting. I choose one of my favorite game covers, Mortal Kombat. I painted it the best I could for it to look similar. On week 5&6 the task was to recreate a piece of Art. I wanted to test my skills so I decided to challenge myself a little by drawing a very detailed eye with shadows. For week 7&8, I personal think was my best piece of art yet. The task was  to illustration from a piece of writing, meaning we had to recreate a piece of art from a game, song, movie etc… I made J Cole the rapper album cover and it came out better than what I expected. For my last week 9, the task was to photo edit a picture with deep depth of field. I decide to edit two pictures because I enjoyed it a lot and they came out look really good. I made the lighting much better and brighter. I also added color to make certain things stand out.
One of my most important sources of ideas for art is just google images because you could type in a type of art and show you a lot of them you can choose from and they come out to be very creative. I sometimes outline the image for it to look neat and then do my own coloring, and sometimes I redraw the whole thing myself if i’m in the mood to. But, when I do redraw the whole picture I change somethings around like color or the way it looks if I think it look better. When I draw I personally like to use mechanical pencils because unlike a number two pencil, it doesn’t draw out after a certain time of using it. During this time I don’t think I learned anything new or different but in the future I plan to, to better my drawing skills even more.To make my artwork I sometimes use the projector. I would put my image on the projector and outline it on to my paper and do the rest myself.
I use my studio time wisely most if the time by starting my art right away and planning on what I want to start with and how I want it to look. But, I honestly can say I sometime work on other assignment to stay ahead in school.Overall, I really enjoyed this art assignments this quarter and hope for even better ones in the future that I can test my skills to.

Week 10 Art Project -Brendan Barnes

For week one we did blind contour  drawings and it was kind of hard for me because I was so used to looking at the paper when I was drawing. Then I didn’t really understand that it was supposed to look messed up so I was throwing a lot of the really bad ones in the trash and starting over. For week three we had to color in our contour drawings and I forgot to submit my work so I was walking around with a zero for it but once I realized it I quickly submitted it.

On week 4 I had to paint, I chose to do perry the platypus  because he is my favorite character from a tv show that I watched when I was a kid, I had a lot of fun working on it because I had to mix the colors together to create the colors that I really wanted. Week 5 and 6 was my worst week this quarter because I tried to recreate the American flag but then I left my flag in my locker and since we had a lot of snow days I was not able to really work on it so I didn’t get a good grade on it, but I choose to do the American flag because it is a symbol itself but within it there are multiple symbols, I just find that to be really cool.

The assignment for week 7 and 8 turned out to be the best artwork I’ve done probably in my whole life, I chose to do Chief Keef who is one of my favorite rappers that are from Chicago. I feel like I did it perfectly. I got points off because for some reason it was turned sideways on the pdf but not on the normal google doc. Week 9 we had to edit a photo and add depth of field to it. To me it was a good way to end off the marking period. I chose to focus on a picture that said “Neither God” and it didn’t take my long to do that but the picture had to be 2 hours of work so I spent the rest of the time add special effects to it.

I would also like people to know that I don’t consider myself to be an artist but I honestly do feel way more confident about drawing since I joined Ms.Hull’s art class, I make sure just to try and have fun with it. For every single one of my pieces of art I never once said I couldn’t do it and I just tried my best.

Final Project Q2-4 - Artist’s Statement

 Artist’s Statement:
For Quarter 2 Advanced Art class, I created drawings, paintings and edited photos. For week 1, the assignment was to do contour drawings and I choose viral and related topics that were currently going on. These topics include Pennywise from the movie IT and the dancing hotdog from Snapchat. Two of my favorite pieces of art created was week 4, choosing your own painting and week 5 and 6, recreate a piece of art. Week 5 and 6, I recreated a piece of art by the artist Noe Two. I felt like this piece was personal and I did better because it was someone that I admire, Aaliyah. As for my recreation of a piece of art for week 4, I painted a water bearer with different shades of blue. I got the idea from my zodiac sign which is aquarius and the sign for it which is a water bearer.
I would like people to know that I take my art is personal to me and that I put a lot of effort into each assignment. I like to choose personal topics for my art work because I want to express how I feel about certain topics through my art work. For example in week 7 and 8, I completed a illustration piece from a piece of writing. The photo I used In this piece of writing was image was from album cover. I made the photo larger first. Then I traced the image and colored it in.
Most of the equipment I used was, coloring pencils, markers and paint. I used markers to outline my art so that it can pop out. Them I would use paint or markers to add some color to my artwork. In week 1 for my contour drawing and coloring, I used different colors to make my contour drawing better. Using these different colors allowed my drawing to be more colorful. Instead of using the colors that are supposed to be for each picture, using different colors made my picture more aesthetic.

Quarter 2 Artist Statement

Quarter 2 Artist Statement
Thea Risher

Over the course of this quarter, I made many different pieces and styles of art. These included blind contour drawings, a painting of our own choice, a recreation of a famous piece of art, an illustration from a piece of writing, and an edited photo. Because they were all very different, the process was extremely different for all of the pieces. I used many mediums I had not used before, such as watercolors or photo editing tools. In this artist statement, I will review everything I did, as well as how I grew as an artist.
It started with the blind contour drawings. For this art, you had to draw anything you could see without looking down at your paper or raising your pencil from the paper. At first this technique was difficult to me because I felt that they needed to be perfect. Once I got the hang of it, it became easy to just draw with my instinct and let it look funny. It showed me that art does have to be perfect or meet anyone’s standards, but could also be fun and stress-relieving. I drew mostly the people around me, myself, my hand, and my hair. I began to enjoy the freedom and simplicity of it. We had to make 10 of these, then we had to color the blind contour drawings as best we can. I used a combination of markers, highlighters, and colored pencils to do this. We could use our eyes for this, so the color ended up making them look more polished and pretty. I used different color schemes for the different drawings, and I really enjoyed the final product. Next piece was my favorite of the quarter, which was any painting of our choice. I chose to use watercolors, because I was curious about how they worked and had never used them before for the most part. I painted a path in a forest, with different colored leaves. I made the branches with a very dense brush and darker brown paint, then made the leaves with washy oranges and reds. I finished with sparkly watercolor paints. I learned that a little bit of water can go a long way. I really pleased with how it came out, considering it was my first time using watercolors. The next assignment was to recreate a piece of art by a famous artist. I chose to do one of the famous still lifes by Paul Cezanne, because I admire his work and technique. I originally wanted to use acrylic paint to recreate his painting, but could not capture the detail the way I wanted to. I ended up having to start over, and decided to just try sketching it. I liked the sketch much better, but I had to work on it at home because I wasted a lot of time trying to use the technique of acrylic painting. This piece was one of the most difficult for me because of changing mediums in the process, but the end product turned out very good in my opinion.
The next art piece was an illustration for a piece of writing. We were given a lot of freedom in this assignment, so I decided that I wanted to do an illustration for a song. The song I chose was Pink Matter by Frank Ocean. For this illustration, I wanted to do the silhouette of a woman surrounded by pink watercolors and full of galaxies in the middle of her body. I started by painting the background, then drew a woman’s profile on top of the pink layer. The profile was difficult to draw, so it took a few tries. Then, I colored her in with black acrylic paint. Once the paint dried, I drew white stars and galaxies and such. I thought this was a very fun art piece because I love music and was glad to incorporate my love of music into my art pieces. Lastly, we had to edit a photo. This was by far the most difficult assignment for me. It was the only one in which we had to edit a photo online, and I had a lot of trouble with this. Twice I completely edited my photo, only to have the photoshop app crash and lose all of my work. It would have been much easier to edit if the software was not faulty. Nevertheless, I think this was a learning experience because I had to learn to operate different photoshop tools, which will be useful for my future.

Week 10 Art- Project- Sharron Norton

In the second  quarter of my art class, we were giving 5 major assignments and these art pieces resulted in the finishing of blind finished contour drawings, creating my own art piece, remaking of a famous piece of art, illustrating from a piece of writing, and photo editing . During the process of this task to complete, my creativity was unleashed. From these assignments, I was able to truly have faith in myself as an artist and test my resourceful talent that has been hidden for so long.

My artwork is about the excitement of exploring with your eyes, mind and spirit the unique and the mysterious. The work that I create in Mrs. Hull’s room is created to have immediate impact and long lasting power, personally for me, atleast. My art pieces are very meaning for to me because its about  doing what I never thought I could do that I never thought I would actually had the time to do before. And from the process I completed in every class period, the paintings and art pieces had  engaged me  by their power of color, motion and imagery and  eventually moved me  into a sense of wondering and curiosity. Right then and there, I was beginning to be pulled in--to be involved in the process of discovering all the variety of shapes, the dark and light spaces in between them, how they're connected, float or seem to move fast across the paper. And to my surprise, I would return the next class period  to the painting and find new insights and associations with the imagery that I would then add to me  overall sense of experiencing the original beauty of the creative process. When completing I knew once placed in my room, that they would  energize it and me as well.

Looking past the obvious, close observation and engagement is major key during the process to making art work.  The challenge is to see beyond the distraction of  self- doubt and to just go with flow. Capture the  uniqueness within yourself and your work. The advice I have for others is enjoy your experience and don’t deprive yourself from greatness. Even if your spend an entire class period just pondering multiple ideas of what you want to create in your assignment, that's fine.  It may not seem like its progress, but let me tell you it is. The process of creation is in a constant state of decay and renewal. I say this because you won’t have anything unless you bring your artist side to life. Set it free to explore and be open minded to trying new things. Even if it may seem unusual.  My goal is to inspire those who to discover beauty in unusual places.

Q2 Art Slideshow - Ethan Larrabee

Our first assignment this quarter was to create ten blind contour drawings. I mainly used pictures of various musicians along with a few other things such as my own hand. When coloring, I used colored pencils to try and mimic the original pictures though I tried some more abstract color choices as well. The whole thing was sort of a rushed job like most of my art assignments. For the painting, I actually didn't have access to paints, so I once again had to use colored pencils. For the flames, I used a mix of several yellow, red, and orange pencils.
For the recreated piece, I found a photo of an old alley and added some characters of my own using pencil. I orginally wanted to ink it and add more detail but I unfortunately ran out of time. For my illustration piece, I used lyrics from a song by Queens of the Stone Age and created the drawing with pencil, inking it afterwards. As for the photo editing, I used the "painting" assignment from ealier in the quarter. I wanted to try and bring the flames out a bit more from the rest of the light and create more contrast. Unfortunately, I have very little experience with photo editing, so it ended up a bit of a mess.

Julia's Q2 Art

A lot of the art I created in this quarter were different versions of art from the same assignment. Namely, these were 10 blind contour drawings, 10 blind contour drawings with color, and 10 versions of a picture of a chicken I took on a road trip to Plymouth through different filters. Two more pieces of art I made were a recreation of The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh and an illustration of my interpretation of the Parting of the Red Sea. I also painted a picture of the sky, but I didn’t have enough blue, so I used purple, red, and a bit of green. This is why I named the painting “Improvised Sky.” I come up for inspiration for art the same way I come up with inspiration for stories: they can pop into my head at any time. I could just be minding my own business, when suddenly an idea hits me.

I used my same strategy of drawing a rough draft in my sketchbook, and then making the good copy on a separate piece of paper. I still prefer colored pencils, but using paint can also be fun. I learned that experimenting with different filters and frames on the same photo can make two completely different and really cool. An example of this is using the night vision filter and the film frame to make a scene of a chicken in a documentary filmed at night, and using the monochrome filter and the old photo frame to make an old and somewhat spooky black and white chicken picture. I still use a sketchbook to draw out rough drafts and ideas.

I spend my studio time working on my current art assignment, or on something else if I’m already done. I learned that you don’t have to draw something to make art, you can just have some fun with a few photo filters.

Artist's Statement

For this quarter I created from recreating a piece of artwork to photo editing. I recreated two types of flower, cherry blossom and a read morning glory flower. In the photo editing I used photos when I went to Venezuela. I got pictures of myself with the background with the sky on top of The Avila mountain in Caracas. I also have a picture of my uncles because they perform for the people, and tourist that go there. The important source is being observant of what you are trying to do because you can’t just do whatever. Well for my experience I need to be observant to recreate something or take a good picture. I used snapseed to edit my pictures, and it’s a very useful app because you can select points in the picture to make it better in that point you picked. Also my phone was a good tool because it has cropping pictures and adjusting brightness.

My preferences is editing pictures to submit a work if you need to take a picture because you can edit the brightness, contraction or anything else. The material I prefer is color pencils and markers because markers are great to mark lines and coloring in with color pencils. I did learn a new technique, using the projector to copy a drawing. It’s the best thing ever because you can be a skilled drawer or not and still us it  it’s so helpful. I didn’t use special tools this quarter but I learn about a eraser that is used to decrease or blend a drawing. The studio time was spent productive even if it wasn’t art, I would be doing work from another class after I was done my artwork.

My important thing happen was communicating with the teacher because if I was communicated with her I wouldn’t been marked late. I try my art pieces  to connect with me some way, the photo editing was about me and my country Venezuela and my uncles that have been there for me and trust. The artwork is from an anime I used to watch and my uncle has a cherry blossom flower tattooed on him so that inspired me. When I chose my own painting I wanted to do something from my childhood so I did Mickey Mouse and the gang when they were babies.

Hey! This art class has honestly changed my view for the better. I see art so differently now, being able to take your time and making art pieces you are actually passionate about shows what art is meant to be. I have learned how to use multiple forms of materials to make these pieces. The first two pieces are blind contour drawings. The task was to draw without looking at the paper. It was very difficult at first to not look, but I soon got the hang of it. My blind contour drawings are simple, but I’m proud of me being able to step out of my comfort zone. The next task has to be one of my favorites. This was the “Choose your own painting”. I enjoyed this so much, out of all the things I could have painted I felt the need to draw something from my childhood. In art, I always like to incorporate a piece of me. I love Winnie the Pooh! He is such an amazing character, especially for younger kids. He really used to teach me how to be patient and loving. I decided to do him big because I wanted to be able to hang it on my wall. I drew him, outlined him with black paint, and continued to paint the inside. Once I finished, I was proud of how well it turned out. Afterwards, we had to “Recreate a piece of Art” . This assignment was a little difficult in finding exactly what I wanted to do. I knew I didn’t want to do something that everyone would typically think of. I researched graffiti and found one I actually liked. I knew it was going to be hard at first, but I pursued my idea. I, then, found one I liked. I drew it onto the paper with a pencil, used a black marker to outline the shading, and colored the rest with crayons. My next piece really touches my heart. It’s an illustration of a writing called “My Island” by Lee. I really wanted to do something that illustrates my island. This poem speaks on so many things that I am very passionate about towards my island. I drew everything with pencil and simply outlined everything with a marker. It was simple, but I believe once you know the backstory it will touch you. The last assignment was to take a picture and edit it. I did a simple water bottle photo. The edit was simple, but it looks really cool. The fading of the bottom and top of the bottle makes it has a very nice effect. & Once again, this is me; Zeniah Navas.

Diary of a Wimpy King: Not-So-Royal

My partner, Kavina Davis, and I created a parody of Macbeth from a high school perspective. A dramatic and witch-filled high school but a high school nonetheless. With Macbeth portrayed as a witty 17 year old boy and his girlfriend, Lady Macbeth portrayed as an evil and manipulative 17 year old girl the classic Shakespearean story takes a remarkable twist with appearances from the three witches or the three lunch "ladies", Principal Duncan, and Mr. Macduff - the grouchy history teacher.
We chose to approach the project from this perspective as we believed that it would be an interesting way to retell the play and to put a more modern and comedic spin on the entire thing. It was enjoyable to build off of one another's ideas and have fun matching up the centuries old characters with high school stereotypes. Not to mention actually drawing the characters was also enjoyable as we were taking an incredibly complex play and combining it with a children's book we both read when we were younger. While one would assume the two books are complete opposites, the archetypes matched up incredibly demonstrating that, despite how many years pass, some literature will always remain relatable to whoever is reading it.
We first came up with the idea of a journal from Macbeth's perspective, then, reminded of a line from the play, we decided that "dwarfish thief" and "wimpy kid" were somewhat interchangeable insults which is how we came up with the title "Diary of a Wimpy King: Not-So-Royal" for our short story. From there we used the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series and art style as a basis for our own short story with character such as Macbeth and Macduff - drawn acting out the story as described in the text. We knew from the beginning that we wanted to have some fun with the story seeing as we had spent 4 or so months scrupulously reading it. And I believe that we did.

Macbeth, the Play - Cameryn Roach, Doug Vandenburg

For English, we were given an assignment to make a creative project based on the story overall or a certain part of Macbeth. Doug and I decided to do a playbill for this assignment, since it seemed easiest where the other ones involved recording or other things that we weren't comfortable with.
Above is our playbill cover, and I drew a candle since later in the story Lady Macbeth would carry around a candle before she started sleep talking, which was a significant part of the story. And since Macbeth and Lady Macbeth's reign came to an end, I drew the candle as if you just blew it out, which signifies Macbeth and Lady Macbeth's fate.

Macbeth - Playbill

Miranda and I choose the Playbill as our creative project choice. We choose this project because it gave us the opportunity to be as creative as we want to be. It also gave us the opportunity to show our knowledge of the play Macbeth.  MIranda We decided to make our project almostly entirely handmade and we decided to use real life actors to play the play. Our playbill includes actors, advertisements, a brief summary, costumes made by hand, and the set.

For our actors we used actors mainly from actionion movies to give the feel of Macbeth being an epic drama film. With the actors we had corresponding roles and what their role is/ what their character does. We used a castle as the set and depending on the set we change the backdrop of the set. Our advertisements not only show plot points like the Lady Macbeth hand soap, but promotion to other shakespeare plays like Hamlet. Our description of the play is just how you'd imagine and we tried to make sure it would be just enough information to enjoy the play in it's fullest.

To the Death-Phoenix and Matalai

By:Phoenix and Matalai

The unofficial but official board game known as “To the Death” is based on Shakespeare’s play Macbeth. There are a lot of references to the play as well as third-party references that aren’t.There are four playable characters in the play, them being Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, King Duncan, and Banquo. They all die in the end, but the objective of the game is to be the last one standing. All four characters have their own unique path to take around the game board, and the game will be finished by the first two players to enter the center of the board (the other two are just out). While in the Battle Zone, the two players fight with different kinds of cards they collected on their way to the center.

In our board game, there are three (motif) kinds of cards to select, the first type being the attack cards. They will be used once two players enter the Battle Zone, which is in the middle of the field. Every attack card represents a weapon, and weapons include Swords, Axes, Bows/Arrows, and Spears, which were all used in the 1500s, if not specifically in the Shakespeare’s play Macbeth. There are two one of a kind cards, one that says ‘Skin them from the Nave to the Chops’, which is a reference to Act 1, Scene 2 of the play. The other card is like the opposite, and it says ‘SUICIDE’ in big letters. This is a reference to Lady Macbeth’s demise in Act 5. It is exactly what it sounds like; whoever picks up the card has to use it right away, and once they do, they’re out the game.

There are also some health cards in the game that increase players’ defense. Health cards include (but aren’t limited to) horses, wine, and Chain Armor. Chain Armor was worn by Macbeth and Malcolm during the final few scenes of the play, because of the war between Scotland and England. Horses were occasionally ridden in the film. There is no direct reference to wine in the play, but it’s been around since 1500 BC and has some health benefits to it as well. The last type of cards are called movement cards, which are used before two players enter the Battle Zone. The cards don’t just say ‘move x spaces forward’ or ‘move y spaces back’. There are references to major or minor situations from the actual play, like how Macbeth became mentally unstable etc. The cards also include certain motifs from the play like death and sleep.

Instructions:

Winning the Game

The winner will be whoever beats their opponent in the Battle Zone, after the first two players get there.

Losing the game

There is more than one way to lose. The first way is picking up the SUICIDE card in the health card deck. You’ll have to use it instantly.

The second way is when someone uses the ‘Skin Them From the Nave to the Chops’ card on you in the Battle Zone. That card causes instant death on the one it was used on.

The third way is to lose the race to the Battle Zone, finishing in third or fourth. You then won’t play anymore.

Playing the game

1. Race to the Battle Zone

The game starts with all four players at the beginning of their labeled paths to the Battle Zone. Every character has their own path to follow, and they’re all designed differently. The players take turns picking up movement cards from the deck, following whatever the card says, and picking up attack and health cards on the way.  If you’ve picked up a card that says to move back when you’re at the start, then just put it at the bottom of the deck and pick up another one. The first player to enter the Battle Zone will have to wait for the second player, and the game will continue with those two players.

2. Battle in the Battle Zone

The two remaining players use the attack and health cards they have collected to fight each other (if you have somehow managed not to take any card at all, just take five of both kinds of cards). Both start with 30 health, and every card says weather it reduces or increases it. Attack cards reduce your opponents health, while health cards increase your own, and also have a ‘tag’ in the corner that says ‘health’ so you’ll know which  ones are which. You can only choose one card to put down every turn, so choose wisely. If the card allows more than one use (it will say so in the bottom right corner if it does), then you can take it back after you put it down and it goes into effect. The game ends once someone’s health goes down to 0.

Macbeth's Market

Antonia and I worked on a creative project that shows our knowledge of Macbeth by William Shakespeare. Our project was a Macbeth general store advertisement where we sold things like eggs, perfume and shoes. Essentially, we designed this project because of how many possible puns we could create involving Macbeth, and food items or appliances. We also wanted to make something that was not commonly done (such as the playbill, or video). We started off with a google document in which we listed possible products which we could easily associate with. After we had written around 15, we started designing a rough draft of the catalog. In our rough draft, we sketched what each page would look like and thought of some different puns that we could use for each product.

Like I said before, this project was designed with puns in mind. A pun that we used for example was Prince of Cucumbers instead of Prince of Cumberland. It is meant for people who have already read Macbeth. In order to thoroughly understand the catalog, it's good to read it slowly and look at the notes below each product to catch all of the details. Our catalog can also be a motivation to read the book! There are several products in our catalog that are worth mentioning, and explaining. For example, the blood red sheets are meant to be a joke about King Duncan’s death in bed. He was brutally murdered in bed. Thus, the deep red sheets represent the blood. The running shoes of Young Fleance are supposed to make sense because he ran away from the men trying to kill him. Another example were the Little Macduff eggs. This makes sense because when he was being killed, he was called an egg.

Playbill - Eli Lerner and Jakob Cantor

Our Macbeth Creative Project was a playbill. Jakob and I decided on a playbill because we felt that we could operate most effectively with a project that had writing and visual aspects. We knew we wanted to have the most significant image in the play be our cover art, so we chose the crown. We also wanted to signify the violence in the play so we added a sword going through the crown with blood dripping off of it. We decided to create our own cover art because we wanted to have an original project.

An important part of our playbill is the color scheme. We decided to make the background red because of the bloody themes that are in Macbeth. The red also matches our cover art. We also thought that the linear style of coloring the background was very appealing and added a little variety. We also decided to do an act-by-act summary to inform the audience about the play they are about to watch.

We chose Kevin Hart to act Macbeth because we thought that he would be good actor for the hallucination scenes and would be somebody funny to watch when sad and going crazy. Chris Rock in our version is the Porter. This decision was made because the porter's role in the play is for comic relief. After a heavy death scene, Chris Rock is a funny person that could bring the audience back to relief with his funny humor and personality.

We hope you enjoy Macbeth!

Makubesu: The Unforgiven

Editor’s Notes -
Welcome to our project! Hi, Peter here. I am one of the creative directors for this project and I just wanted to say it’s been a blast recreating the entire Macbeth universe into the country of Japan . Me, Lucas, and Eden have worked hard to produce a product where people of all ages could effectively understand and enjoy the play. We rewrote the entire play to reflect today’s modern English language and changed the settings and names to a Japanese inspired theme/era. We decided to make these changes in order to improve the overall pace of the play and to remove any lines that we felt are unnecessary or dragging on too long. One example of this was Act 4, Scene 3 which is the longest scene in the play and was our biggest challenge. There was a lot of lines but ultimately we got it completed by taking the main focus of the play and rewriting it into our own words.
One major change I would like to point out is our omitting of Act 3, Scene 4 as we felt like it was not relevant to the original storyline and we wouldn’t be bothered to put it in our rendition of Macbeth. We also tried to shorten the story so it’s pace is well rounded (and for our own sakes…) The overall story is the same with Macbeth (or Makubesu), receiving prophecies, killing Duncan, becoming Emperor...well you’ve read Macbeth before. Anyways, after a lot of time, researching, planning, grinding, and a couple of energy drinks, I hope you enjoy our rendition of Macbeth dubbed "Makubesu: The Unforgiven". Macbeth Creative Project: Zachary Sanders and Matthew Nguyen-Conquest

For me and Matthew's creative project we decided to make a Macbeth themed board game. The game itself, named Conquest, has a decent amount if rules but can be understood if read properly.  Having done research on the time period, we decided to name it Conquest due to the Norman conquest happening at this approximate time.  The goal of the game to be the last castle standing by wiping out the three other enemy castles in a war between the alliances of Scotland, lead by Macbeth, England, lead by Edward, Norway, lead by Macdonwald, and Fife, lead by Macduff.  We chose a war scenario because the play opens and closes with a war, first between Norway and Scotland, then between Scotland and England.  We chose those names for the alliances because for England and Scotland, they were at war at the end, while at the beginning, it was with Norway.  For Fife, that alliance was against Norway alongside Scotland at first, while later they were with England and against Scotland, so they do play a major role in the play.

On the physical game board itself, there are hexagonal spaces, a nod to early RTS (Real Time Strategy) games that would take place in the middle age.  There is a space for Prophecy cards, which are named so because of the prophecies that Macbeth and Banquo are given during the play.  Thusly, they contain some shakespearean language along with some motifs that are within the play, two of them being the supernatural and blood.  Another theme that is included is the number 3, which is involved multiple times during gameplay, with an example being the number of troops required to gain a prophecy card. At four opposing points on the board are the alliance castles, which are actually indicated by the flag of the Alliance, along with the name of it.  A castle drawing or picture was dropped due to time concerns.  Other pieces that are used are the soldier pieces, which there are ten of them for each player.

Macbeth Playbill

Ash and I made a playbill. Ash and I seperated jobs into twos and did one together. My job was to pick actors and create costumes. I picked the actors by nationality or facial characteristic. I picked the costumes based off of the time period of Macbeth and the roles they played in society. Ash did the summary and the advertisements. The summary is a brief description of the Macbeth play.
The advertisements are not based off of anything accept payed exposure. The scene we picked together was a scene that shows how much of a dynamic character Macbeth is. This scene is when Macbeth goes meet the witches for the second time. This scene represents act 4 scene one. When Macbeth goes to the three witches to receive three more prophecies. The three witches and the three prophecies are a recurring motif throughout the play. The number three is very significant in Macbeth. The rain sets the mood for the scene making a dark and spooky mood while the dialogue between the witches and Macbeth occurs. This is an explanation for the greatness used in our Playbill.

In our English 1 class, we read Macbeth for a majority of our second quarter. My partner,Tyria Brown Smith, and I decided to make a theatrical playbill to display what we read in the play. On the front page is the cover. I drew three mouths to represent the three witches, who influenced Macbeth’s decisions throughout the play. There is an ear ,at the side of the cover, that is a symbol for Macbeth’s ear . I drew the words “Macbeth” in a speech bubble starting at the ear to the mouths to indicate the witches whispering to him. Tyria did the summary of the plot. She explained how Macbeth went from being one of the most honorable person in Scotland to the most hated tyrant.

We made this project because we thought it would be easy to understand and we could do alot with it creatively. There was much room for us to be imaginative. For example our character list had pictures next to every character, Some characters looked more serious and some were completely goofy. All the characters had different shaped heads to make it more interesting.  We also used word play for the advertisements to make the playbill more commercial.

Choose Your Own Bloody Adventure

In our Macbeth unit in English class, one assignment we had was to make a creative project connecting to the Shakespearian play, Macbeth. Margie (a talented artist :) ) and I decided to make a Macbeth themed board game, called Choose Your Own Bloody Adventure.

In our game, you go around the board and pick up cards, and collect “sanity points”. To move around the board, you roll a dice. On certain spaces, you get to pick up a card. The cards have different choices that you can make that connect to the play. Once you read the card and make a decision, the player flips it over and receives/ gets sanity points taken away based on their answer. When the cards run out, the game ends. Whoever has the most sanity points wins the game.

In Macbeth, Macbeth, King of Scotland, turns from mostly normal to totally insane. He loses his sanity based on choices he makes in the play. For example, when he decides to murder the original King to appease his hunger for power, he set himself up for insanity. As he continues being greedy and committing murders, he goes further and further into losing his mind. In our game, this is represented by gathering and losing sanity points. If the player loses sanity points, they are making the decisions Macbeth would make, causing him to lose his sanity.

All of our cards connect to some part of the play. For example, this card, “Would you kill someone to rise to power, or would you let fate take its turn?” connects to when Macbeth and his wife were planning to murder the King. Throughout the play, Macbeth questions whether to let his fate play out, or meddle in it (by killing Duncan, in this instance). Another card, “Would you kill your enemy's family to advance in power, or would you find another way?” goes back to the near end of the play, when Macbeth killed his adversary’s family to gain power. At this point, whatever Macbeth thought, was acted upon without him thinking. He did not have enough patience or sanity to find another way to advance. One more card, “Would you let your partner push you into doing something crazy, or would you have your own ideas?” refers to the relationship between Macbeth and his wife, Lady Macbeth. In the beginning of the play, Macbeth let Lady Macbeth push him into doing deranged acts, like murdering. This was another first step of him losing his sanity.

We hope you enjoy our board game! Scroll down for pictures/ a video of our game! :)

Dunsinane™: The Official Trading Card Game By: Gabriella Torres & Andrew Semisch

Macbeth Card Stuff
For our creative project, Andrew and I worked on a card game of our own design featuring all of the characters of the play (unless we missed one or two of them). Included in the slideshow are all of the cards. Most cards, as you can see, have their own signature ability that isn’t shared with any other card. These abilities are inspired by what that character does in the play. For example, our Macbeth card can’t be destroyed by any other card except Macduff since, in the play, Macduff is the only person who can kill him. Aside from all the characters, there are cards related to themes or important phrases/moments in the book. For example there is the “Milk of Human Kindness” card, which is a callback to when Lady Macbeth told Macbeth that he was too full of said, which becomes a recurring idea in the play. The aim of the game is to defeat your enemy using your cards against theirs and dethrone them. The rules are described in the attached pdf.

Macbeth//Creative Project

Chris Jacobs and I, had a great time doing this project. Our video project is a “vlog” or “video blog” based on Act 5 Scene 1 of the play written by Shakespeare’s, “Macbeth”.  Act 5 Scene 1 is the scene that has Lady Macbeth's doctor and her gentle woman watching as she sleepwalks around and talks about all of the many murders Macbeth and her have been responsible for. We decided to make this parody scene a video because we feel as though that's the best way people will understand it and take it in. Adding comedy into the scene will make it more interesting and understandable compared to if we just read in old english, verbatim from the book. This scene is very important because it shows how Lady Macbeth switched up from being nonchalant about the murders to been guilt stricken in her sleep walk. It's also the scene that she confesses her murders accidentally. The scene takes place in her bedroom where her caregivers are watching afar as she walks around talking to herself about the murderers and goes to wash her hands of all the “blood” that is there in her mind, which is a call back to an earlier scene where Macbeth was trying to wash his hands of all the “blood” that represented his guilt about the murders. The blood isn’t physically there, but metaphorically because they feel as though the sin of murdering those people will never go away and they’re stuck with the guilt forever.  This scene affects the rest of the play in a not so significant way in the actual book, but shows the audience why Lady Macbeth committed suicide in the movie even if its skimmed over in the book.

We decided to do a parody because we found that if we read the lines verbatim it would honestly seem really boring and nobody would want to watch someone just read that considering that scene in general isn't all that visually appealing. We will give the scene a comedic effect so it can actually have something for people to look at and really understand deeply. We tried our best with the environment and props to make the scene as realistic as possible. In drama we learned the different skills of acting so we applied it to the scene. Some of the skills are facing the audience, establishing the environment, having a goal, and projecting our voices. Our favorite part of filming this is how we completely changed the language of the scene from old english to modern American English. We switched up the words a bit so that it still made sense in the context that the original version was, but in a way that more people would understand without it having to be explained. We designed it in a vlog type of video because that’s what a lot of people are doing these days and we feel as though it would be a lot funnier that way.
