Book Review

The book “The Physics of Superheroes” by James Kakalios is fantastic. A great read for superhero and physics nerds alike, James is able to go one step further with the idea by thinking in ways no one else would. An example would be his research into the superhero Iron man, James calculates Tony Starks weight with the weight of his suit to figure out the power the his rocket boots would need to exert in order too get Iron man off the ground. Who would think of this? Who would calculate the surface area of the Iron Man suit and figure out how much solar would be able to be absorbed over how long? James Kakalios does.

I started physics with no idea what was going on and stumbled along with C’s. Third quarter I told myself I needed to buckle down and started reading this book, the first few chapters are basic physics and the stuff that I was learning in class, this outside source helped me bring my grade up to a B as I worked and read. I read about the tension in Spiderman’s webs as well as the tension needed to hold up ten pounds. This outside source really helped because I was working hard to read up more on the subject.

This book brings physics and superheroes together. He picks at the truth in the comics but respects them, he makes sure the reader knows that the reason the science is often wrong is because the comics were coming out so fast the writers did not often have time to learn a whole new science for each hero and villain. The reader gets new insight into the world of science and even learns about superheros.

You can tell if you like this book when you get the little jokes. Good reading.

Q4

A lot of the work I did was randomly thrown away fourth quarter, I do not have many pictures.
The first piece I did was emotional abstract. The emotion I tried to do and get across was anger. I used dark colors such as black, rich reds and dark blue. I tried to make a messy but edgy piece, I used hard edge shapes such as triangles and pentagons to me they are hard edged.
The next piece which was my favorite was the movement abstract. I decided to do the motion of blood and how it changes colors once oxygen touches it. So I used the colors blue, red and purple. I decided to laminate the entire paper and paint veins on top of it to show the human body so people understood.
For the rest of the quarter I decided to do iphonetography. I took a bunch of pictures and edited the film. I tried to use different focuses and really understand film. I also tried to only use the natural picture instead of the edits.

Q4 Art Projects

Abstract Emotion

In this drawing, I wanted to show jealousy. I used colored pencils and crayons to do this. I wanted to make it so that on one side of the picture there was a lot of bright colors and that it was very happy. Then, on the other side of the picture I wanted it to make a part that is really small and green. The green representing jealousy of how big and bright the other part of the picture is.
Abstract Motion
Adventure Time; Jake Tile
I worked with Morgan Taylor on this. We wanted to collaborate on a tile that we'd both be happy with. So, we picked our favorite cartoon; Adventure Time with Finn and Jake. We picked Finn the Human because he is bright and happy. And he is the young hero. We were going to have him have on a happy face but, we thought that it would be cooler as a nervous face. The tile is right when you walk in the classroom and we thought that would be funny for the freshman who were nervous when they came in this year.

10% Project- Alchemy

For my 10% project, I decided to research alchemy because it is known as the start of chemistry and I like that there is also a lot of fantasy surrounding the topic. At first I was going to write a short story about a alchemist trying to create the Philosopher's Stone, but I could not find much information on the types of ingredients they would use and the things I found were very confusing. In the end, I decided to do a couple of drawings that I think represent alchemy and I wrote a couple paragraphs from the point of view of an alchemist; why he was questing the things he wanted.

Here's the Alchemist's POV:
"There is so much death. We, as humans, are weak and succumb to our mortal illnesses. We are kept in the dark that is our ignorance, but we need to make our path towards enlightenment. Until we reach albedo and ultimately rubedo, we shall be kept in that dark. If we don’t triumph over our ignorance, we shall stay there forever. If  panacea and prima materia are not unveiled by discovery, we will never find our way out of this abyss.

So, now I begin my work. Many of us are unknowledgeable to the facts of life and the development of spiritual objects that will lead to the revolution of Gnostic Anthropos, the perfect being. I, however, have educated myself. I know of what needs to be done. Though it is the process that worries me. The paths that I take, the recipes I create and the decisions I make can ultimately impact mankind. I will not only improve life, but I will also rid the world of the fear of death, by illness and old age."

(Note: Albedo and Rubedo are basically the sunrise.)

Some of the background information I presented:
Blackness: symbolizes the initial state of chaos; prima materia.
Prima Materia: Prime matter; the Philosopher's Stone (lapis philosophorum). Everything is believed to come from prima materia.
Theory of Conjunction: the union of things, such as opposites.
Gnostic Anthropos: the divine man; considered to be Adam.
Water: everything is just water and everything is contained in water. Philosophical water is different from ordinary water, but real water can be philosophical water.
Fire: believed to play the same role as water. Resides in the Hermetic Vessel, which must be round, yet egg-shaped. The roundness is to symbolize the cosmos, so that the stars would influence a successful operation.

Prima materia or the philosopher's stone is considered a "hermaphrodite" because it can contain both philosophical gold and golden glass or malleable glass. It was also thought that prima materia contained one or two parts water and fire (theory of conjunction). These are antagonists, but many believe they are one in the same, that they were definitely in the stone and that they were needed to bring about transformation.

The following drawing is my representation of the vessel for philosophical fire.

10% Project - Electricity

For the 10% project, I decided to focus on electric current. We use electric current daily, but most people don't understand how it works. It's easy for us because we just plug it into an outlet and magical things happen. The point of this was just to tell people the basics about electricity. Not the history behind it, but more about currents and resistance. I explained the different things like the currents and the resistance. I compared it to being water flowing in a river and there's a dam resisting the flow in order for things to settle down.

For the presentation (speed dating) part of the project, I had an ammeter, lights, and a battery to demonstrate how things worked. There wasn't really much on my Keynote because it was easier to explain with the actual project than in words on a slide.

Quantum Field Theory Website (InTheMaking)

Copy and paste the link below to see my informational website about quantum field theory!

sla-soccer.sites.emr.ge/quantum-field-theory.html

My website is still in the making as I want to keep building it throughout the summer but the main essence of my project was two aspects combined into one. The two aspects are Computer Science (Coding) and Quantum Field Theory. I made this website to briefly explain these main components of quantum field theory, "Equations", "Helpful Resources", "Father's of Quantum Physics". Furthermore, even though I do not understand multivariable calculus and other concepts to comprehend quantum field theory fully, I still explained the gist of the theory.

Art Blog Post Q4 By: Morgan Taylor

I have worked hard all year. I have made many art projects and 2 tiles that are on the wall. I love advanced art and I wish to do it next year. I work hard on all of my art projects and I can't wait to do more with photoshop. I did most of my work on photoshop this quarter and one tile. I worked really hard on all of these projects and I think they worked out really well.
