Romero y Los Derechos Humanos: Un Análisis

powered by Splicd.com

powered by Splicd.com

Jennifer Wright Capstone

Posted by Jennifer Wright in Capstone - Siswick on Friday, May 31, 2013 at 9:20 am
I began creating pottery in Junior year of high school and the thought of breaking a piece or it falling to its fragmented end off the end of the counter was a painful idea at best. It takes so much time and love to throw a bowl or cup, trim the foot and fire it twice over. For it to survive as a functioning piece of ceramics was a marvel to me.

All that changed when I began this project.

When I considered what type of project to do, I knew I would enjoy something artistic, especially if it involved my new found love of ceramics

SLA has had a ceramics class for 5 years and over time beginner pieces have accumulated in the studio. Pots, plates, and vases of all colors and sizes were left behind by students to collect dust.

It should be said that I'd only done small scale mosaics in various art classes over the years-- I have never even done any piece of artwork this large. Using the 30-40 pieces left over from the ceramics class, I created a 13.5 sq ft mosaic.

When I work with ceramic I am reminded that nothing is permanent and anything can be repurposed to make something completely new. The concept of recycling or "up-cycling" these pieces was a major concept for this project. I begin a piece by making many designs. I like having options and then choosing the one that speaks to me most. The design that I settled on, the silhouetted skyline of Philadelphia, was first and foremost something that means a lot to me, but also a manageable design for a beginner like myself.

A combination of smashing the pieces with a hammer and throwing them into cardboard boxes allowed me to make usable tiles for the mosaic.

When my work is going well, I am filled with a sense of vitality-- I don't feel anything but excitement for this project. Many times, I found myself most productive during the night time. My house was quiet and it felt like I was in my own little world. I never felt tired until I finished what I set out to do in a session of work.

There is a sense of finality that comes with mosaic art because once it is glued and grouted it is permanent and cannot be changed. It was a huge challenge for my perfectionism because I had to sort through many tiles that were less than perfect and choose to use them. It was the beauty of recycling tiles instead of using tesserae- the unusual shape and thickness gives the piece its life.

Soy Chavista. ¿Tal Vez?

Posted by Jennifer Wright in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at 12:48 pm

With Love

Favorite Spot: Schuylkill River Loop/Trail

Neighborhood: Center City

I am, a high school senior about to move on to UPenn

Years in Philly: my whole life

Current Home: Roxborough/Manayunk

Dear Philadelphia,

Of all places I love to run, it has to be along your scuzzy Schuylkill River.

I know this path backwards and forwards with my eyes closed. It's there for me when it snows in October and is 90 degrees in February, for a long run or a short one. It has seen me during my best intervals and worst hill repeats.

While it might flood every now and then or play host to annoying regattas crowding the trail, it's seen my through training for every race I've done. It's the watering hole for amateur and season runners serving a purpose- an occasionally challenging, dependable route with mile markers and drinking fountains along the way (spring to the end of fall, anyway).

My favorite thing along this route is the angels- Three Angels, actually. Really called Playing Angels, they are huge statue angels on high pillars on the banks of the river at the junction of Kelly and Fountain Green Drives. I use them as a mile marker, a rest stop and a lot of time--motivation. I repeat mantras about just getting to 'The Angels' to complete difficult runs. At one time, getting to them was the farthest I'd ever run.

It's an escape from schoolwork and busy city life without going too far from you at all.

With love,

Jenn

Jenny's Jewish Apple Cake

Posted by Jennifer Wright in Science and Society - Best on Thursday, January 24, 2013 at 7:40 pm
Jewish Apple Cake Recipe:

6 apples, Granny Smith preferred
1 tablespoon cinnamon
5 tablespoons sugar
2 3/4 cups flour, sifted
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup vegetable oil
2 cups sugar
1/4 cup orange juice
2 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
4 eggs
1 cup walnuts, chopped (optional)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 9” Bundt pan. Peel, core and chop apples into chunks. Toss with cinnamon and sugar and set aside.

Stir together flour, baking powder and salt in a large mixing bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk together oil, orange juice, sugar and vanilla. Mix wet ingredients into the dry ones, then add eggs, one at a time. Scrape down the bowl to ensure all ingredients are incorporated.

Pour half of batter into prepared pan. Spread half of apples over it. Pour the remaining batter over the apples and arrange the remaining apples on top. Bake for about 1 1/2 hours, or until a tester comes out clean.

Analysis

The approximate calories for the whole cake is 4,973 calories. There is quite a lot of oil in this recipe, 1 cup, and that comes up to almost 2,000 calories just itself! sugar and oil are the most ‘unhealthy’ things in the recipe. If you ate nothing but this, you would be eating entirely too much sugar and oil which should be the smallest parts of one’s diet. This is a not the worst desert, it uses 6 apples after all. The best way to optimize it in the future is to cut down on the oil and the sugar.

The apples definitely came from Washington. They are from a company called Rainier Fruit Company. I read on their website that they apples are harvested in September and October. On the site, it says they are stored in oxygen controlled rooms for up to 12 months. They say this allows the US to not rely on the imported apples and only ones grown locally. They state they do not use GMOs, but I can’t find information about the fertilizers or pesticides only that the fruit is certified pesticide-residue free.

The flour costs 2.98 for a 5lb bag so this recipe used 50 cents worth.

The sugar cost 6.48 for a 10lb bag so this recipe used 87 cents worth.

The vegetable oil costs 3.48 for 48oz so this recipe used 58 cents worth.

This recipe uses about 66 cents worth of eggs.

This recipe is actually pretty cheap if you buy the ingredients on sale. Apples can vary in price if they are in season. Farmers and companies that produce eggs and apples made lots of money off these because they are mass produced. For the apples, the Rainier Fruit Company is an independent corporation but they are one of the biggest fruit growers in the US.

The main ingredient in Jewish Apple Cake is the apples. As mentioned, they are from Washington, specifically the Selah town. That is about 2,750 miles from Philadelphia. There isn’t a way to know when they were actually grown do to the storage process. The website for the company as well as the bag mention the wax that is put onto the apples. Firstly, I believe this to be purely aesthetic to achieve that shiny apple look, but they say the waxes come from natural sources, they stop mold and apples normally produce their own wax--plus you can wash it off. Now I bought them at the supermarket, but buying them locally cuts down on the need for these ‘waxes’. Growing them yourself would be of course the idea and most cost efficient.

Personal Reflection

My role on the larger food system is my consuming of products. My vote is the money I spend in the supermarket or at a fast food restaurant. Spending the money I earn on the food that is un-whole or that uses animals treated inhumanely is my vote for the continuation of that type of food. Because of that the absolute biggest problem in the food system is the shroud of mystery about the production of the food. If there was more awareness I believe there would have to be more policies in place to regulate it and make it safer. As a nation we are obsessed with convenience and cheapness. Changes I could personally make are buying food that is responsibly produced. The people who can afford it need to be the ones who make the changes by influencing the companies to change. Just like in Food Inc. they gave the example of Walmart altering the way they milk is produced because of consumer trends. I am willing to make these changes, though they it might be difficult to see at first. I think most people are like me when they don’t know about the basics when it comes to food. Learning just some of the terminology can change the way a person looks at the food they buy.

Mar Adentro

Posted by Jennifer Wright on Monday, January 7, 2013 at 8:06 pm

Roy Lichtenstein: further study with The Scarlett Letter and Juno

Posted by Jennifer Wright in Sexuality and Society in Literature - Dunn on Sunday, December 9, 2012 at 11:27 pm

This project was a representation of two themes from both The Scarlet Letter and the film Juno: struggling against imposed ideas and public vs. private self. The medium I chose was two hand drawn photos that I enhanced in Adobe Photoshop to model works by the famous pop artist, Roy Lichtenstein. The pieces I drew inspiration from were Thinking of Him (1963) and Shipboard Girl (1965).

I would name my first piece Thinking of Them as I depicted Juno with tears in her eye as she imagines what both she and Hester Prynne feared-- single motherhood. Juno knows she’s ill-equipped to handle a child on her own and then fears the couple she planned to take her baby will then become one half of a pair, instead. The imposed idea is that family must include a mother/father/child. Juno and Hester were both people who had non-traditional families, Juno with a stepmother and Hester living without her husband for a while. This family model is the idealized version of what is right. In both circumstances, they find a way to cope that suits them. In my piece I made a question mark where the father would be. I used the orange/white stripe and mix of red and gold to represent the social stigma both were forced to hold that caused them anxiety over the imposed belief of the traditional family.

The second piece is a bit more abstract in concept than the first. It shows Reverend Dimmesdale with a tear on his cheek as he looks on to the letter D on the scaffold. The letter D is an indication that the character is Dimmesdale. Dimmesdale struggles throughout the novel with his public image in direct conflict with his private self. His emotion is that he knows that it is also his shame at adultery, but he doesn’t have to endure it publicly. Rather than himself of the scaffold it is his essence. He cries because he truly belongs up there and eventually realizes that himself. I used the stripe pattern, but I made the white red, instead. Someone like Paulie Bleeker, though very unlike Dimmesdale with different intention, also wishes to bear some of the responsibility.

The process of creating my pieces included drawing the pictures by hand and inking them. I scanned them into Photoshop and added the dot texture, bold lines and contrasting hues mimicking the pop art style of Lichtenstein. Photoshop is extremely time consuming and complicated. This was my first time doing extensive work with the program.

If I were to redo the project and when I do continue work with pop art, I will use a drawing pad that connects to the computer and draw the photos on the program Illustrator. It makes for smoother and neater artwork rather than erasing and using paper. Overall, I’m very satisfied with my work in Photoshop but if I had a few more steady hours of work I would have used it for Photoshop. This type of project is enjoyable, but frustrating due to the fact that perfection is unattainable. The quality and effects are always changing and endless.

Me llamo Jennifer Wright.

Yo no disimulo mis sentimientos.

The (Consequences) of Our Best Ideas

Posted by Jennifer Wright in American Government - Herman on Monday, September 17, 2012 at 5:10 pm

The power that the Patriot Act allows the government to yield is unnecessary to achieve the means it sets out to accomplish. For example, the pieces of the law that allow agents access to library records is completely bogus. The possibility of abuse of this law is far greater than it's ability to do good. Rather than actually taking a hard look at the consequences of our best idea- being national security- pride and patriotism or shaming others for lack thereof in questioning this law has brought us to hastily procured legislation that restrict basic freedoms set in our Constitution.

The threat lies in the fact that most common citizens, let alone the Senate or House members, don't understand its provisions whether they be positive or negative. Rather than attempt to improve international relations thus making those suspected of terrorism less inclined to hate us on principle, we relinquish our freedoms from ourselves by letting the law go as it stands now without further dissection. I believe with the amount of corruption within the government and the judicial system, individual courts or FBI agents with NSLs should not be able to pick and choose who has their Constitutional rights taken away based on suspicion like what types of books they like to read.

I am not saying in any way that we should not investigate possible terror plots, but the current standing of the Patriot Act puts the basic everyday rights of citizens in jeopardy when they are not the ones who should be suspected of terrorism. The position of, "well if you're doing nothing wrong then it shouldn't matter, right?" grinds my gears especially. So basically, you're not religious so you shouldn't have the right to practice any religion you want anyway. We all think you're guilty, so you don't need a fair trial anyway, right?

Enemy of the State Respone

Posted by Jennifer Wright in American Government - Herman on Friday, September 14, 2012 at 1:27 pm
This film really freaked me out for the most part. On it's face there is a lot of action and there's Will Smith, but the implications of what was portrayed in the movie kept me up last night. I have dreams where I can't escape from someone chasing me and this was the epitome of it.

The government basically can do what they please. Listen to calls, check. Videotape everything, check. Kill people and (try to) cover it up, check. Pretty much wreak havoc to get the intended target, check. They are ruthless and perverse.

Individual privacy is not respected whatsoever. There is not a rock unturned, because they all have wiretaps under them now. I especially liked the part when Dean and the real Brill put the camera and taps in the politicians home/office. It really brought it home that privacy is non-existent and not just by means of the government. These non-government people are able to take advantage of the videotaping to use as incriminating blackmail.

I understand the dramatizations in the movie, but what concerned me most was the lack of procedure. When Reynolds gave the order, someone was going down. There as no question of authority let alone necessity. They were willing to go to any means necessary to dispose of the tape.

I'm conflicted as to whether anyone should have their privacy restricted. There is such a thin line between doing this to a few suspected people versus anyone and everyone. The problem with letting this happen would be that in order to cut down on corruption and bad judgement a lot of people would have to be involved in this. The more people know they less of a "secret undercover" operation it would be maybe making it less effective.

Who would have the ultimate authority to choose who gets followed and who does not? I don't believe any one person should have that God-like power.

Summer Reading, don't miss this one

This is a Wordle using words and phrases I associate with John Green's novel Looking For Alaska.

I have read this book at least 3 times and I enjoy it more each time. It makes me think about everything from love and relationships to death and religion.

I recommend you read it when you have some time on your hands because it induces some aimless staring or daydreaming as you attempt to digest the huge themes in the book.

What If? History Benchmark: Changing Free Press

Posted by Jennifer Wright in American History - Laufenberg on Friday, June 1, 2012 at 10:36 am

In 1733, German-American printer named John Peter Zenger accepted an offer from James Alexander to publish his editorials criticizing New York's governor at the time. Alexander founded the New York Weekly Journal and published the first issue in November of 1733. The Governor being criticized went by the name William Cosby. Cosby attempted to have the publication shut down several times with the court's help, but eventually put out a 50 pound reward to the person that could identify the authors of the editorials and order Zenger's papers to be burned publicly. With the help of his attorney general Cosby issued a warrant for Zenger's arrest. Zenger spent 8 months in jail. Cosby attempted to select jurors himself, but that was dismissed and twelve townspeople were picked.

The trial began in August of 1735 on the terms that the paper was producing "seditious libel". It was true that Andrew Hamilton, of Philadelphia, Zenger's lawyer had no law to support his idea that the truth could be defensive for a libel charge. The trial could be said to have been the most famous 'jury nullification' in history, which means a jury has the power to serve  verdict of 'not guilty' because the disagree with the current law rather than actually believe the person is not guilty. Needless to say, the jury did not make a judgement on the existing law or the facts, but what they thought of the law itself. This is thought to be the building blocks for Free Press in the Bill of Rights.

My point of divergence is that the jury does rule a guilty verdict and the existing British law is not challenged.

I liked being able to pick something I was interested in. I had the freedom to choose  a topic that conceded my because I am a journalist. The whole project was interesting in that way, but the jury nullification is what I find interesting. As well as the fact that Zenger was just the publisher when we never wrote a single word. He did not set out to be a champion of free speech, but simply a printer doing his thing.

The individuals in this situation seem to make the impact but it is really the individuals joining together as the jury and as the public in a print protest of the power they disagreed with. Free Press is a systemic change. If this was the only thing to be changed, I believe someone or some people would have eventually made free press happen but countless other things would have been affected in the mean time.

The resonating changed I thought about was elections. If press were not able to use their privilege of reporting facts, even when unpleasant the results of many elections could have changed.

If this project could have been improved it would have been to find more sources. It was very difficult to locate primary sources from the 1730's. Honestly, if I had more evidence I could have used more.

If I could do it over, I would have done even more. I like the idea of the magazine, but there isn't much content. Because I am a journalist I didn't like feeling as if the project was only half done with a single photo, article and cartoon.

Imperfect Tense Post 5

Posted by Jennifer Wright in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at 3:48 pm

My other posts have been about certain topics, so now I would like to focus on a grammar concept.

I am going to implement the imperfect tense. I can't remember formally learning about this tense to I will practice it.

I'm wondering if the tense will present itself at all. I don't normally talk about things that require it, but I attempt to use it.

I have to go into a topic that will force me to talk about actions that occurred repeatedly in the past or actions that are not physical but like feelings.

I will stick to the basics first like,

¿Qué tal? and ¿Donde vives?

I was thinking of asking about fun activities that teenagers do because it may lead me to talk about things I do or used to do.

¿Qué se hace para diversión?

I had to research what the imperfect tense was all about.

I like studyspanish.com so I used that.

This page shows the phrases commonly associated with the Imperfect Tense and shows the stem changes.

I talked to two people, Mariano from Argentina and Sergio from Spain, they were both 19.

I found it hard to find times to use the imperfect. These are two times I did, though.

La Tomatina- Blog 4

Posted by Jennifer Wright in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Friday, May 18, 2012 at 5:53 pm

I wish to speak to someone about La Tomatina. Mostly everyone I talk to is from Spain, so I want to ask someone about this.

Mis preguntas son

¿Tú sabes sobre "la tomatina"?

¿Qué tipo la gente assiste?

¿Tú pagas asistir?

I think La Tomatina sounds so amazing so I'm excited to hear about it from natives.

I'm not really nervous about anything, the people are not intimidating.

I chose to speak with Jeff who is from Spain and is 20 years old. This was the first time I had spoken with him.

This interaction helped me toward my personal goals because I really just want to feel comfortable conversationally speaking and a topic about something they experience falls within that.

I spoke with Jeff for a long time, but I include the best piece of our conversation

Ver La Tele!: Let's talk about TV

Posted by Jennifer Wright in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at 10:55 pm
This time around I want to talk about something specific. I feel comfortable now not relying on Word Reference. I use it a bit for some words for clarity, but I'm trying really hard.

this time I wanted to know more about a conversational topic. I asked about TV!

I spoke with a woman from Chile who was 20 named Mariana. She was easily the best conversationalist I've had on Shared Talk, it was great!

y questions for beforehand were:

¿Donde vives?
¿Cuantos años tienes?
¿Qué las programas miras?
¿Miras las programs de los estados unidos?
¿Donde estudias inglés?

I love Shared Talk so I feel confident about my conversation today. I think I'm better at conversation already.

Afterward:

Proving my idea again, love Shared Talk. I had my best conversation yet. The girl requested me, funnily enough. She had a lot to say and was so easy to talk to. She corrected me a few times but did it very nicely. I love saying jajajaja instead of hahahah

My Attempt to Converse Without Word Reference

Posted by Jennifer Wright in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Monday, April 23, 2012 at 9:17 am

How can I maintain a conversation and communicate my ideas without having to use Word Reference to look up words to use?

Pre:

¿Qué tal?

¿Donde vive?

¿Como está el tiempo?

¿Como está la comida?

I'm nervous to just simply not use word reference. I rely on it so much because there are so many words I just don't know. This is going to be very difficult for me.

Post:

Frazer-Ireland pero vive en Londres

Javier- Spain

I had a good time with who I talked with. Frazer was really cool because he lived in London and I had just visited. If I messed up a bit he didn't mind since he spoke English. Javier was cool because he would correct me nicely, whereas I've had some people correct me sort of meanly. I learned that they both loved paella, which funnily enough I first tried in London.

This helped me a lot. It was sort of nice not having to rely on the dictionary. It was difficult but it forced me to only rely on the knowledge I have. My grammar of course still needs improvement and just generally expanding my vocab but doing this I'm already learning words.

a. What went well?
-Coming up with the the idea for the info graphic was the easiest. I came up with the idea to use the iCal photo and the pictograms.

b. What did not?
-Figuring out which data to use and what was important was difficult as well as sourcing it. We found the population one day and then couldn't find an accurate source the next.

c. What would you do differently next time?

-I would use some more data to paint the picture of what happened. I mean the numbers are there but not enough to evoke an appropriate emotion.

d. Specifically comment on the 10 tips for effective infographics -

Be Concise- it is concise with very few words

Be Visual- the whole thing is visual using picture to show numbers

Be Smarter- not sure about it this one

Be Transparent- the data is there and easy to understand

Be Different- we used the ical calendar as a clever way to show about W.R. Grace cleaning up

Be Accurate- the data is mostly from the EPA

Be Attractive- it's colorful

Be Varied- we sort of vary, using pictograms and a pie chart

Be Gracious- not sure about this one, I guess we didn't do it?

Be Creative- we utilized different methods using the pictograms

Why do you think some elements of design were easier or harder to include in the end product?

It was easy to just use data but it's hard to paint the picture with few words. I am a wordy person and that was a challenge for me.

Amor Trágico en WSLA 101.5

Describe the Q3BM: what was the assignment?

-We had to make a podcast or a tv show about relationship issues.

What did your group decide to do and why?

-My group made a podcast because we wanted to get involved with the script rather than focusing on making a video or anything.

What did you learn from doing this project?

-I learned more about the subjunctive, which I was still having trouble with. I also realized that I used ser and estar without even thinking.

How do you feel about your final product?

-I'm really happy with the final product. We worked well as a group and it showed since we are done a day early.

If you could do your project all over again, what would you do differently/the same?

-I guess I would do a video. It might have been fun to make it as if they were guests in the studio.

Business Unit Reflection

Posted by Jennifer Wright in American History - Laufenberg on Friday, February 10, 2012 at 9:34 am

I used physical format firstly because I like to make things with my hands. Making it this way, writing the prompts and making it fun was easily the best way for me to understand the assignment. The idea hit me and I knew it was the one because no one else was doing some like this.

The EQ I picked is 'What causes systemic and individual change?'

2 sentences

The format is symbolic; the choices of an individual dictate an outcome and result in change of systems. Secondly, it is game where strategy and responsible choices determine whether the change is beneficial.

I would still like to understand monopolies. I get they are big companies, but I would be interested to learn more about how the money comes in and goes out of them. Also, the stock market and why it "crashed" exactly is quite unclear to me still.

Space Sick

Posted by Jennifer Wright in English 3 - Rami on Friday, January 13, 2012 at 12:01 pm
By Jenn Wright

How hard and uncomfortable this seat feels is the only thing that matters to me right now. It is a flood, the way the rap music from the earbuds of the high school boy opposite me seep into the cracks of my subconscious. In this one bus ride, my last bus ride, the only thing I can think about is the bass of the song and just how much I actually do hate siting on this bus everyday, twice a day.

But, I mean I just don’t understand why this is necessary, though. It was ONE party. My parents are just going to drastic measures! The Academy? Really? Shooting me into East Jesus Nowhere in outer space is not what I need. Honestly, I’m a good kid. I clean my room, I walk the dog and complete my brain uploads. Why exactly they think sending me off to some ‘school’ is a good idea is a mystery to me. Apparently this is they way they learned as a kid. Being taught by a person? Having to sit in a lesson all day? It  all makes no sense.

I have two days. It’s two days until I have to board an intergalactic flight to my doom.

I meet up with Jeremy at Mario’s Pizza.

“The ACADEMY?! You must be kidding me. You’re yankin’ my chain, right?”

“Unfortuately, I am neither kidding or yankin,” I match. “It’s happening, dude. I might doubt it if not for the fact that my dad has been talking non-stop about it.”

Jeremy leans back in his chair and shakes his head with his typical smirk, “You are in for it, man. I’ve heard they have no internet!” This was something I hadn’t heard before. No internet? I gape at him; that is unreal. Jeremy seems satisfied having shocked me with that tidbit.

Later on that night, Mom comes in to talk to me. I couldn’t handle any more tears. Luckily, she looked stoic instead.

“Now honey, you know this is going to be unlike anything you’ve ever experienced. You know that Itzahseekret is a very different planet than ours. You’ll need your--”

“I know mom,” I interupted, “my winter coat. We’ve been to Ryland for holiday, it’s basically the same planet, right?” She nodded, but she bit her lip as if she wasn’t so sure I really did understand. Mom just hugged me gently as if she had never done it before and left me to “my own devices” as Dad called it. She doesn’t really want to send me to the Academy. My dad is the one. He believes in learning your lesson to fullest extent; whereas, Mom just follows along thinking it’s what is best for me.

I loaded up my Digi-screen and the holographic image splayed out in front of me. I came to a plain website, probably a free, not to mention ancient, Geocities site. I skimmed over a short text describing the school. Something about books and something called a classroom, I think? Finally, I found a photo. The actual Academy was not quite what I expected in terms of aesthetics. I thought at least it would look modern, maybe made of all glass or something cool. Not quite. It was ordinary in all aspects like the kind of stuff you see in 2000’s movies. The inconspicuous rectangluar shape and unassuming brown color did not give me any indication of what was inside.

I spend the rest of the night and the next night searching the internet for something to cling to. I’m used to knowing exactly where something is and exactly what it looks like from my Digi-screen. I don’t go anywhere without checking it. The lack of information keeps me awake. With no luck, my ceiling offers no repreive. I wake up knowing no more than what Dad and Jeremy have told me. The bus route and people on it that I know by heart do not seem as alien anymore.

_________________________

I wake up on the day I’ve been dreading since I was caught doing it. Don’t make me bring it up again, ya know, the party. My mom flips my light on without saying a word.  Dad’s been waiting for something like this. He went to the Academy too, so technically it’s legacy. In his day, it was some sort of honor.

“Made me a man!” he recounts to me for, I’d safely say, the billionth time.

Now, it’s pure punishment and that is exactly the point--punishment. Breakfast is a quiet event on all fronts. I imagine the house will be this way when I’m not here. As Dad and I are leaving, my Mom doesn’t say much but just looks me in the eyes with tears in hers. She hugs me for about 4 hours before my Dad finally beeps his car horn to wake up the whole neighborhood. Different though,  Dad talks the whole ride. He is beside himself with excitement.

“Sound as if you’re happy to be rid of me.” I tell him.

“No,” he answers, “just happy you screwed up enough to convince your mother this is good for you. The Academy will do you some good.”

As we approach the flight station he gets more serious. “Kid, be good for once and don’t make your mother and I have to come get you.”

I don’t know what it is; my parents think I’m a hooligan. I think they read some parenting book that says as soon as I hit 17 I must be close to criminal.

Dad just claps me on the back and drives away. Not that I expect much else, we have a no nonsense relationship.

He warned me about the flight days ago, though, and hell it is. The turbulence is horrible and I now am aware that I do in fact, get space sick.

  • How did you group go about making a decision for what to focus on for the project?
  • 11th grade Essential ? - What is the role of the individual in creating and sustaining change?
  • How has your understanding of the electoral process and whether or not the US is a democracy evolved during this unit?
  • How did you decide to best relay a message to a national audience with your marketing campaign?

The process of deciding what to focus on was an interesting one. My group just began discussing voter-ship and what we personally thought would affect it. We all had a different viewpoint so it was a bit of a challenge. My group originally wanted to make voting mandatory but two other groups were doing that. We went with "Weekend Voting" instead.

The role of the individual in creating change is singular. Most times two people have the same idea, but the role of the individual is the vital one. Being able to think up an idea, develop it, recognize its flaws and attempt to reason why it works better than another is how positive change comes about. Once that process has taken place within one's own mind does the idea lend itself to be shared and worked on with others.

Voting and how the US does it has never been something I thought about, honestly. This unit has forced me to think about some of the major flaws in the democratic system and just how they could be fixed. Before, I assumed everyone voted and was surprised to learn that was not the case.

For ours it was showing the flexibility of the voting. America's busy, so we used that as the campaigning piece. Have Time to Spend? Vote on the Weekend

Election Day Interviews!

Today I went to my local polling place at a YMCA. I had a great time hanging out with some older ladies and saw about 5 voters in my hour there, prettty boring. But, I got a pretty sweet donut and learned a LOT about the polls, how to vote, and just how the whole process works.

The Borough: Jenn Wright

Posted by Jennifer Wright in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 11:25 pm
For this project, the purpose was to write the lyrics to a song answering the question "De donde vengo yo?" or "Where do you come from?" The Process include writing the lyrics to the song, creating the music on Garageband and recording the lyrics with the music.

I learned that it is much easier to be silly than serious. Because I am not a fluent speaker the meaning of some words becomes skewed. Last year I did a similar project and I tried for a serious song; it was so cheesy. This year I went the funny route. For me at least, the act of rapping is funny. I had to refresh my memory about Garageband, it is hard!
It has so many buttons and knob that can do some really cool things. I'm really happy with the way the music came out though. I found it hard to rap to a beat, it did not happen. I tried my best to match my voice to the music to not much avail. If I could do it over again I would maybe have the basics of my music first and then attempt to fit the lyrics to the song. That seems backwards but I had to change some of the rhyming words due to grammatical errors and it messed with my flow. Yeah I said it, the flow.

Immigration Visualization Project Reflection

Posted by Jennifer Wright in American History - Laufenberg on Friday, September 23, 2011 at 9:59 am
The huge spikes that occurred surprised me most about that data. I thought the immigration due to wars in other countries was obvious. Many people flock to the US for safety. Looking at the data, I see highs and then low-lows. It seems that in 1999-2000 there was a very high percentage of immigration. I would predict that that number is likely to drop for this current decade and the next. The US isn't in a very good spot economically and that would definitely factor into the amount of people attempting to gain access to America.  That same idea can be seen within the data. When the US was doing well everyone wanted in.

My group wanted to represent that data in a really creative way. We wanted to do something outside of the normal bar or pie chart. When Ms. Laufenberg showed us a bunch of cool visual graphs my group all like the spiral type one. Ours is a simpler version but with the same concepts. It has pictures to describe the major events and uses the red line to signify the amount of immigration per decade. It is very visual rather than numerical.

The challenging part of this project was sharing the work. It was one piece that three people needed to work on it. Distributing the tasks evenly was difficult. If I had to do this project over, I would choose a different format. My group tried to do something interesting and it worked relatively well, but it the distribution of work was the hard part. We gathered the info and developed the concept together but the actual construction had to be one person.

Reflexion
I'm proud of my rhyming that I included. It's sporadic but it flows nicely. I may have to change some of the words to fit the flow of the song. The way it fits into the music may have to change. I chose to talk about about how my neighborhood is and how I am different. Important though, I included though it may have a bad rep I can't change where I'm from and I'm okay with it. A lot of bad things are said about where I'm from so I chose to focus on that.

I'm hoping to make this a rap type thing, using techo music.

Amo o no amo, es mi barrio

Yo no puedo cambio

My refrain is about something that happens in my neighborhood. The curfew is not enforced and there are always kids playing outside on the street. That is something I think stands out about my neighborhood. I also included a part about how many people say not so nice things about where I'm from, but it is where I am from and I can't change it. I embrace it, and this song I'm writing will show that.

Where I'm From by Jenn Wright

Posted by Jennifer Wright in English 3 - Rami on Friday, September 9, 2011 at 1:27 pm
I'm from a small town

not in the typical sense but

a town within a large city

a small place where you may know my name

  or my face

but it ends there

I'm from a medium sized house with a medium sized family in it

from Kevin, the other one of two children

two point five children and a white picket fence?

not so much,

a gray wire fence though does the same job

       holds in the large dreams

       protecting them from harm

as we sit together around the kitchen table discussing days on end

I'm from a garden,

tomatoes, peppers and more

planted and cultivated by Dad and now myself

but also of large dreams

where some lie dead in the face of financial distress

others, in lack of progress

from dreams blooming like sunflowers

large dreams speak to the hours and hours I spend

pouring over books, fact and figures

attempting to use the ingredients and execute the recipe

began by Mom

I'm from baking bread

the doughy smell enveloping the house

the lock to the fence

the security blanket

   keeping us from getting hurt

from being a convert, to the broken world

I'm from protection

  from family

  from

"You're extremely lucky,

so many would wish

  for just this"

Jenn Wright Final Spanish Project: Comics

Posted by Jennifer Wright in Spanish 2 - Gierke on Friday, June 10, 2011 at 12:03 pm
For my project I drew tiny comics of myself in various situations answering the questions and scanned them into Comic Life. I enjoyed this project because of its flexibility. It left me a lot to do creatively. I genuinely like drawing the comics and coming up with the concept for each one. That is exactly what made me want to do the project. I looked forward to *trying* to be funny. Using Comic Life was so fun. It's so easy to use and I would definitely recommend it to anyone for a project. If I were to do it differently I would have drawn even more comics. The one where I say "Hola!" three times, I drew that one first. As you can see, I made that one idea into three separate drawings. If I had more time I would have drawn a lot more for each concept. This would have been about 12 pages long!

Quarter 4 Projects

Posted by Jennifer Wright in Advanced Art - Hull on Thursday, May 5, 2011 at 8:48 pm
By far, I liked working with the sculpture this quarter. It showed me that I can make something with my hands that surprised and impressed people. Everyone thought it was glass when they looked at it the first time, when it was actually was melted plastic. When I started it I didn't know how it would go, but that's why I enjoyed it because of its unpredictability.

Next, I took photos of the rose sculpture that I did. I was able to use a better camera and that really enhanced them. After that I edited them using photoshop and iPhoto. I thought they came out really cool.

The bikes were particularly hard. The line drawing came out well and I was happy with the details I included. The negative space was cool to do because I have never done anything like it before. I didn't get to the shading drawing for lack of time.

I was able to finish my collection of pieces imitating Roy Lichtenstein. This one was much better, I was neater with the grid and the dots came out a lot better.

What's in a school? How about tradition? As said by my best friend and interviewee "High school is a whole different world." Grade school may seem like no big deal but coming from a Catholic grade school based entirely on tradition, this was my story about crossing the boundary by leaving my neighborhood and my peers. This is a story about my parents decision to break the social norm and *gasp* send me to public school *gasp times two*--downtown.

Quarter 3 Projects

These drawings were quite a challenge for me. I have never had to work this quickly and keep up with a pace of work. Through these projects, I became more confident in my abilities. Though my work may not be perfect I have improved and worked harder than I ever have on these pieces. I enjoyed doing the portraits. I did a portrait on my own with now prompting. My favorite pieces were the artist focus. I love the style of Roy Lichtenstein and enjoyed researching and imitating his style. I have never worked on pieces like these so they were really enjoyable. The dots were quite the challenge because Lichtenstein's are so precise. I used a grid pattern but couldn't get it measured perfectly. Even though I wasn't perfect with my dots, I still liked how it came out. The desired effect worked. Overall my only regret throughout the process was leaving my full body portrait for the end of the quarter. I got it done, but would have liked to add more into it.

Jenn Wright Quarter 2

Posted by Jennifer Wright in Advanced Art - Hull on Friday, January 14, 2011 at 10:59 pm
I worked on different types of poster making and typography. I got the inspiration from a talented artist on Flickr that I follow. This person creates many interesting pieces with typeface and photos that made me want to create my own.

I used things I heard around me as well as some of my favorite expressions as inspiration. It was difficult to find photos to mesh together to make what I saw in my head. When I decided on the expressions to use, I had to sit down and think about what they really meant. From there, I envisioned a scene or collection oh photos to fit into the words. All the photos I used were from Wikicommons.

The process consisted of deciding on the phrases, finding the photos and arranging the pieces. It was quite to easy to pick the phrases. After that, I had to search the internet to find pictures that suited the scene I had pictured in my head. Through this process, I had to familiarize myself with public domain as well as several Creative Commons Licenses. One I had the photos the real fun started. I twisted, turned, cropped and flipped each picture many ways. I tried out all different fonts, sizes and colors. The fonts, I chose fitting typefaces and in most pieces used color-matching for the photos and fonts.

"You Just Got Jarred!"

Posted by Jennifer Wright in English 2 - Pahomov on Friday, January 14, 2011 at 2:08 pm
Jenn Wright

English- Language

Slang. It's the basis of every teen's speech. Whether its shortened words or new words all together, it slips into everyday use without cause. Sometimes it's a play on words, or borrowed from another language. Either way it shapes the way one presents them self. It differentiates neighborhoods, race and even gender.

In daily life, it becomes easy to pick up the speech that others use. The first time the word or phrase is spoken it seems foreign on the tongue, but with enough practice an outsider might think you started the trend. Language is an art from the day we learn to say the simplest of words. With art comes practice. Creating art gives an individual a certain brand of power-- the power to be anyone, anywhere, anytime, crafting, twisting and forming a second dialect of sorts as everyone gets in on the trend. Every group, being a circle of friends, a school or neighborhood holds the rulebook when it comes to their speech. James Baldwin wrote that, “People evolve a language in order to describe and thus control their circumstances, or in order not to be submerged by a reality they cannot articulate.” James Baldwin understands perfectly how many teens work in today’s world. If there is not a word for something, make one up. To feel apart of a culture or even a neighborhood within a city, one will start using unfamiliar words to “control their circumstance”. Suddenly one person hears something they have never heard of or used. That new word is added to their vocabulary. They begin to say it with fervor as if they had made up the word themselves. Then in turn the masses begin using it. Thus, if you use it you are inducted into the club. Wear the badge proudly. Now you sound like everybody else. Beat that word to death until somebody else introduces another acronym or Spanish word that sounds funny. It is like you're in on the secret now. The word may have gone over your head three or four times until you pulled someone aside and asked them in serious undertone what it means.

Besides fitting in, speech can be crafted as a sport. Trendsetting becomes recreation. My friends are big on the whole “making fun of each other and not really meaning it”. One friend made a joke about the status of another friend’s relationship.

“Ohhhh burn!”

 “Dude, you salty!!”

I exclaim, trying out my new word while motioning of screwing a top on a jar, “You just got jarred!”

My friends looked to me with inquisitive faces. Though I knew that they didn’t know what it meant I still said,

"Oh! You never heard that word before? Wow."

I had learned Australian slang and wanted to pass it on. Most people strive to introduce the next big thing. My best friend traveled to Australia over the summer. We had quite the time dissecting some of the things she had heard during her time there. With that, I told my friends at school about this Australian slang. Every time I said one of the words, I felt that individuality. James Baldwin’s quote works in this sense as well. I wanted to know something another didn’t and in an effort to “articulate a reality” I continued to evolve language we already used. It didn’t matter that we already had a phrase for what we meant. It was easy to get over that awkwardness when asked what something I said meant. It didn't matter because I got their attention and next time when I heard them say my word I would know I had started that. Before you realize, it melds into common language. Now that everyone knows, or pretends and asks later, what it means, a new trend has been initiated and accepted by the majority. I used a word from another country to stand out in a crowd.

Anyone can start a transformation of language. It is human instinct to learn and be curious as well as adapt to surrounding. One may find they speak in a way they didn’t think they could or never realized they did. To adapt to the people around you, change the tone or speed. To sound smart, use “big” words. Use a word from another town. You start out being the only one who says it, it gets people's attention, creates interest. If you have a British accent and cockney slang you may just be in the running for most popular kid in the class.

These goals define what success means for our project. Because our video teaches about the past verb tense, our viewers should be able to add another dimension to their conversation. Also, our video demonstrates some basic conversation skills that will allow viewers to start a friendly conversation. They should be able to use the past tense for talking about what you did over the summer. One should be able to hold a “small talk” conversation. We made this project to help teach Noah how to use some Spanish. This will teach him the past tense verbs and other familiar words. This project is basically a tutorial so Noah will be able to adjust to life in Spanish culture. We are proud of, firstly how well we worked together. Everyone took a part in producing the video and accompanying parts. The group all kept up with the check points and introduced many creative ideas. If we were to do the project over again we would have liked to have more time to polish over some of the filming in terms of pronunciation and camera quality.

Jennifer Wright Marking Period 1

Posted by Jennifer Wright in Advanced Art - Hull on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at 7:34 pm

I created a sculpture that was inspired by using sustainable materials. I took an idea that was close to me and put the idea in effect using things that were recycled. By using materials that were already created put this type of art into perspective.

For me, I make decisions about my work by planning. I am a natural planner, often over-thinking, so most of my ideas were hashed out before I started creating the sculpture. I selected materials that were relevant to the project. Recycled bottle caps, cardboard and paper were the focal point. In another way, I chose things that are not normally used in art outside of arts-and-crafts projects. Though I knew what I was building, the type of materials were selected and used as I began making it.

The idea was started when I wanted to share something about my life. I chose something relatively new to my life. I found out I had a thyroid disorder at the beginning of ninth grade. It's something of a side story in my life. It's not a focal point and that's why I chose to focus on it. My work was about my personal experience with thyroid disease as well as general information about it and how it can affect a person.
