Abstract:
There are many questions that people have because not many know about rowing. To help increase the knowledge of rowing and the struggle of being an African-American, female rower, I’ve created a blog. This blog answers general questions non-rowers have, it shares my own personal thoughts on rowing, my growth with rowing, and more. Creating this blog has helped me think back to how I’ve grown as a person thanks to SLA and rowing for providing me a supportive environment and learning what it means to be responsible and have dedication with a positive attitude. My research for this project begun the second I joined PCR back in 2010. I knew nothing about rowing when I first joined and it’s literally taken me 3 years to completely understand rowing.

Bibliography:

1. Kitch, Bryan. "Rowing Related." Rowing Related. Bryan Kitch, 2010. Web. 31 May 2013.

This is a blog that comments on huge rowing events  such as the IRA National Championship Regatta and Dad Vails. Going through this blog helped showed me what is going on in the rowing community outside of PCR's bubble. This also gave me a general idea of what a rowing blog should look like.

2. "Rowing Journal." Rowing Journal. N.p., 2013. Web. 31 May 2013.

3. ScullerX. "The CrossFit Rowing Blog." The CrossFit Rowing Blog. N.p., 24 Feb. 2010. Web. 31 May 2013.

This blog is very similar to my own. However, this one touches more on the actual workouts ScullerX does. This blog encourages me to add video and pictures rather than just words on my own blog. This also showed me how I should type my blog post. Like how to phrase different things.

4. Fay, Devin. "The Bates Rower." The Bates Rower. N.p., 18 May 2009. Web. 31 May 2013.

This is another blog used to influence how I phrase different things in my blog. This blog was a little different than the other blogs I looked at because it allowed a couple of people to post on the blog. So the wording changed between different blog posts. This blog also includes the race results from the regattas Bates competed at. It was interesting because my coach rowed for Bates.

5. "Philadelphia City Rowing." Philadelphia City Rowing. Philadelphia City Rowing, 2011. Web. 31 May 2013.

This is the website for my team. I took some information about PCR from this website whenever I found it hard to explain a certain thing.

6. Peters, Libby. PCR First Season. 2010. video. Youtube, Philadelphia. Web. 31 May 2013. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3O4Og6yla8>.

This video was created by my original coach when PCR first begun. I remember watching this video when it first came out and getting excited by seeing the results from my first year of rowing. This video also makes me happy because I find it inspirational that we've come so far in the past 3 years.

7. Philadelphia City Rowing- Fall 2011. 2011. video. Youtube, Philadelphia. Web. 31 May 2013. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJDXhf3aMek>.

This video was created by the girls novice coach, Annie, last year.

8. Slack, Peter. Philadelphia City Rowing (short).mov. 2012. video. Youtube, Philadelphia. Web. 31 May 2013. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2baUhyG2UqU>.

I remember when this video was created because it was the first time an outside person actually wanted to make a video about us. This was used with a goPro and it only films the boys.

9. "Rowing Terminology." T.C William High School Crew. Alexandria Crew Boosters Club, Inc., 2007. Web. 31 May 2013.

Non-rowers always have questions about rowing terminology because I agree that rowing gets pretty complicated. It was difficult to define each term in my own words without being confusing.

Imani Johnson's Love Notes

Posted by Imani Johnson in Storytelling - Rami on Friday, February 15, 2013 at 7:14 pm

About Me:

I am: A Philadelphia high school senior, a rower, big sister, and environmentalist.

Neighborhood: Overbrook Farms

Favorite Spot: The Schuylkill River and boathouse row

Years in Philly: 10 years

Dear Schuylkill River,

I've watched you from the car window for many years. Never giving a second thought to who you are, to what you are. I never took the chance to dive deeper into the little things that help you function. Never took the chance to who's lives you've changed and who relies on your presence. Little did I know there's a whole other world that revolves around you. It took me 14 years to figure this out. 14 years too long. The summer of 2010 was when we were introduced. The moment we were introduced broadened my perspective of Philadelphia. You showed me a unique way to live and gave me the desire to explore more of Philly. Thank you for making me explore and appreciate Philadelphia.

Much love,

Imani.

Corruption in the Government System

Posted by Imani Johnson on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at 11:24 pm
The PATRIOT act completely vandalizes the U.S citizens right for freedom. I understand the importance of keeping American citizens safe from outside threats and also domestic threats but does that require invading their privacy. The one thing that America holds above many other countries is the ability to have privacy. Although I have not seen actual proof of the government abusing their power with this act, it can easily be guessed that corruption in the government is according. With this act, the government has gained a large amount of power which they should not have a hold on. Sure this may be an overreaction but I believe no one should have too much power over a person especially since power can consume and corrupt easily.

Now that Osama Bin Laden has been killed and the multiple wars and quickly coming to an end, I feel as though the PATRIOT act is not really needed.  It has certainly served it's purpose as the key to protecting this country but now that the immediate threat is gone it's time to back off a bit. Americans need to feel the comfort of their former rights and what life was like before 9/11. Of couse certain security rules must stay in place since 9/11 did show the holes in our security but  things such as the PATRIOT act are not longer needed.

Imani's Idea on Enemy of the State

Posted by Imani Johnson on Friday, September 14, 2012 at 1:08 pm
Enemy of the State basically is a movie that shows the corruption behind the well trusted government and the extremes they go through when they feel like they are threatened. The part of government that stars in the movie is the NSA (National Security Agency.) Every move the NSA made had was unjust and completely obliterated the idea of privacy and freedom an American citizen is supposed to have. The scene that really stuck out to me was when the NSA sent two men to go and break into Robert’s house, without a warrant, and totally trashed the house, along with bugging his wardrobe and house. If I remember correctly, any government agent needs to have a warrant of the property before entering which Robert did state when they first politely entered the house, but the NSA totally ignored that rule and broke in. That scene really made me see the carelessness of the NSA. They were given a job and were ruthless with their actions which tested the line of their authority.

Honestly, I can't fathom the idea of the government really working like this and directing their attention to smaller issues that was created by their own sloppiness. I have no problem with the government trying to seriously protect their country and their people in their organizations but harassing a citizen without evidence is completely out of line. If you look back at the film remember that the NSA really did have no idea if Robert had the device/video on him. But they continued to harass him although they had no idea if he had the video or not.

This movie brought me back to what we learned about the PATRIOT act. At first I was all for the law but then after learning about it during class, then watching this movie I feel like America is slowly turning into a country under the influence of a dictator. Almost like how China's government is, who basically monitors everything their citizens do. I don't want to live in a country where I can't live the way I want with the government OR the people around thinking there's a double meaning to my actions. I do understand that it is vital that people with suspicious actions should be monitored but only if there is more than an accusation and more evidence. There is a fine line between crossing an American citizens rights and keeping the country safe, and that line has been crossed when they passed the PATRIOT act.

Imani Johnson Q4 BM -- What if Steve Jobs wasn't adopted?

Posted by Imani Johnson in American History - Laufenberg on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 7:18 pm
To view my project please click the link below. The link will have you download my project, so instead of just clicking through the pages, actually play the presentation because I added some effects.

Click here (well more like copy and paste): If you want to download the keynote....  http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40815479/IJohnsonQ4Bm.key

If you don't want to just view it here!

For this project I decided to focus on something that I could kind of see effecting my life today. So I chose to focus on Steve Job, his personal life, and the impact he had on the world and the technology revolution. My point of divergence is what if Steve Jobs did not get adopted. Many things could have happened the night Job's biological parents called to see if someone would adopt their baby. His adoptive parents could have not answered the phone, or his biological mother would have decided to have the abortion. However, I wanted to go down the route of what would happen if his adoptive parents never answered the phone. This would make Job's an orphan considering the fact that his biological parents were not allowed to keep him. So with Job's being an orphan his world would be so complicated thinking about technology or a way to make the world better would not take place in his thoughts. He would be more focused on family issues, financial troubles, and learning how to care for himself.

The future that I imagine resulting from my POD is that we would be behind in the technology revolution, Science Leadership Academy would not have been successful, and  technology would cost less. Technology would cost less because Apple kind of set the standards of having high priced products since they were so unique. So without Apple being in the picture, companies would not sell their products to the public for unreasonable prices. Another thing that effects the prices of the technological products that is also a result of my POD is the fact that we are behind in the technology revolution. The technology revolution is really the progress of technology and the quickness of how technology has changed. With many original ideas, technology not only has changed on itself, but the way people think, create, and design. But many companies have admitted to trying to copy the style of Apple. Mainly the professional look Apple gives off, and it's simplicity. So without having Apple as a model technology is still complicated with navigating, the finished product does not look pleasant, and people are not able to expand their creativity since the technology does not hold applications that can go above and beyond the average human thoughts.

This project was very interesting and the one part that I really liked was the fact that I was open to do whatever I really wanted. (Well kind of.)  This gave me a chance to write my own type of world where anything could really happen and it really forced me to use my imagination which I haven't really been able to do recently with my work. I feel as though the most challenging part of this benchmark was the fact that I wasn't entirely sure as to what should be added into the project. Like a paper wasn't provided to explain the project, so I had nothing to go back to when there's no one to answer my questions. So things were pretty confusing when it came to making the primary sources. Also, I chose a topic where I couldn't really make a primary source because it involves someone's birth. And my thing was where someone just didn't answer a phone call, so I couldn't have a hardcore change of primary sources for it.

Blog Post #5. The Final One!!

Posted by Imani Johnson in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at 9:22 am
For my final blog post I decided to guide my conversation from talking about the types of food he eats in Ecuador to what the culture is like and how the teenage life is like. Like what teenagers do for fun. So when asking him, he tells me that Ecuador is kind of a little more chill than other countries like Brazil. THe drinking age apparently is 15 years old, and they go to "farrear" which seems like it would be a noun in English but really is a verb. To farrear is when teens go out to party, sing, dance, and drink, and you only have to be 12 years old to go farrear. It seems like age really isn't that big of a thing in Ecuador since kids can be so young to drink alcohol. So I guess this also means they get treated like adults earlier meaning they are expected to be pretty independent and help support their families.

Blog #4 Moving On From Food

Posted by Imani Johnson in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at 10:10 pm
Kleber and I's communication has been lagging a bit due to busy lives and he tends to not answer my questions all the time so we talk about whatever he responds to my emails with. Since it has been a short while since I emailed him from tonight, I've decided to kind of change the direction of our conversation. So after a few weeks of getting to know Kleber a bit, I finally asked him (for the second time) where he's from. He replied by saying Ecuador, so at that moment I decided that I wanted to ask him what is the culture of Ecuador and what is the life of a teen in Ecuador like. Sure my conversation topic could be googled but information is always better when it comes from a person who experiences that particular topic on a daily. I have yet to wait for his response but I'm actually fairly interested as to what he says. Maybe the teenager life is very active with outdoor activities and having fun. Or maybe they don't have much fun because they have to spend their free time assisting their families. Who knows, I can't wait to hear what life inEcuador is like and if it can relate to my life or not.

Blog Post #3

Posted by Imani Johnson in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at 7:58 am
So I decided to change my conversation topic to foods. At the moment, Kleber and I are talking about the types of holidays and foods that he eats during those holidays. He still hasn't given me names of the exact holidays that he celebrates, so I'm waiting for that part of our conversation to start. It's interesting to know that we kind of eat the same sort of things during the holidays. However, I wonder how he would react if I told him that my family doesn't really cook much during the holidays mainly because we aren't very hungry during that time period. Since all of our attention is focused on the activity we're doing. I still don't know what country he's from although I think I asked at one point during our conversations.

Addition to Week#2 Post Welcome Diego!

Posted by Imani Johnson in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Monday, April 30, 2012 at 7:33 pm
Another conversation that I completely forgot about was one that I had with Diego, a guy I met on conversation exchange. Our conversation wasn't very much but it did run pretty smoothly until he started correcting me and having me talk in English. But it did start off we just Spanish right off the bat. Which was pretty neat, and I was happy to see that he used words I didn't know with me. This isn't much since I hadn't talked to Diego since that chat but I feel as though him and Kleber are the most helpful out of the ton of other people I got in contact with.

Week#2 All about Kleber and I's convo

Posted by Imani Johnson in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Sunday, April 29, 2012 at 7:13 pm
This week, I only got in contact with my one helped Kleber.

He/she hasn't gotten back to me after responding to their questions but it was going having to answer the questions asked. But I tried to not use wordreference to help form my sentences. I think I would be good to just stick with communicating with Kleber, and send messages with me in Spanish and him/her in English so that way we both can learn. I only asked Kleber to ask me questions since I wasn't sure what to say, plus I didn't want to put too much of my business out there to someone I didn't know. Sadly Kleber didn't give me questions that required me to respond using different tenses meaning I would have to constantly conjugate my verbs. But we could work on that more this upcoming week.

Grammar

Posted by Imani Johnson in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Monday, April 23, 2012 at 1:10 am
I've assigned myself to multiple people that matched the description of the people that I wanted to socialize with and could help me out properly on the website Conversation Exchange.  Luckily I chose people who get on the site regularly and responded back to me quickly but many of them required for me to have skype which doesn't work well on my computer. So I had to ask to either do email or ichat. Not many of them were able to get back to me except for 2. Edward, and Kleber. For both people, they help me out with my Spanish and I help them improve their English. So it's kind of like a win-win situation.

For the conversations that I had with both of them were mainly introductory things and helping out with little things. Below is the first screenshot I took of Edward and I's first conversation. The second is a screenshot of the email Kleber and I are sending each other.

Imani's Reflection

Posted by Imani Johnson in American History - Laufenberg on Monday, March 26, 2012 at 12:12 pm

What went well was the efficiency we were able to research on our topic and how we equally worked on creating the info graphic.

What didn't quite go well was the fact that when it came time to actually start connecting pictures with our research. It was hard to really work well on how we want our whole poster to look like and organize it so that people can tell what our natural diaster was about.

If I had another chance to work on this I would probably try to organize the information a little bit better and also find information that would be a little easier to display through only pictures and/or diagrams.

The tips that my group and I excelled in was being accurate, being a bit varied, and visual. The rest of the tips I feel like my group and I could've worked a little more on using those tips especially with "be concise" and "be creative." This was a little hard to do because there is a lot to explain about the government reaction/response that couldn't really be explained clearly through just pictures or diagrams.

Imani Johnson's Business Unit Reflection

Posted by Imani Johnson in American History - Laufenberg on Friday, February 10, 2012 at 11:07 am
1. Symone and I decided to do a wordle because it seemed like it was better to use adjectives in order to define a successful change creating individual

2. My answer to the EQ we chose is that the role of the individual in creating and sustaining change is to go against all odds and defend the plan in the success to keep his reform. Also to keep with his change and making sure people stick by it.

3.  My question that I still have about business in America is when has a plan of change failed and why?

Better Than a Dream and Closer to a Nightmare

Posted by Imani Johnson in English 3 - Rami on Friday, January 13, 2012 at 1:44 pm

It felt like I was underwater rather than standing on the enormous diamond field. The ball’s rough surface cuts through my hand like glass as I spin it between my palms wondering if this is how God feels. To know that he holds the greatest power in just his hands, to know that each crevice in his palm is filled with a wonderful magic that only you possess. Then, I see Him dancing around the Earth in a beautiful colorful garb wrapped around his body. His hands stretch toward Earth seeming as though he’s trying to warm himself from a fire. Then I notice the silvery streams coming from Earth to His hands and turning gold as it  reflects off His hand and returning back to Earth. Panic strikes straight to my heart. What is he doing to my home?! Running towards him I yell at him to stop but he doesn’t turn around.

“Annie! Annie!” I hear muffled cries. It’s so hard to focus while feeling the tingly feeling run throughout my body. Having the sensation overwhelms me with joy and reminds me of the power I hold.

“Get back to the game, Bethany. Our life is riding on it,” a small voice tells me. Reminding me what this game really means and jolting me up through my haze back to facing reality. Winning this is my only option, the only way I could escape the cold metal tables with the blinding light hanging over it. I stretch out to have the sun warm my skin...but wait why do I feel grass? Slowly I open my eyes only to be blinded by a brilliant white light. Has my nightmare come true? But no I can hear the cheering again, my ears are no longer clogged but how’d I end up on the ground?

“Bethany?” I turn toward the direction my name was being called and found Louis staring at me with concern written all over his boyish face.
“What’s going on? How’d I get on the ground?” I question him quickly while using his offered hand to stand up. While pulling me up he responds, “You were preparing to throw another of your wicked curve balls when you just kind of collapsed. As though you were a puppet and the puppet-master accidentally let go of you strings. What was going on in your mind? Are you feeling okay?”

“Wow that’s odd, I felt amazing....Like I was day dreaming.”
“Well alright day dreamer,” Louis says while patting my back. “Time to win us some money.”
I step back to the small mount in the ground and assume my position which the team likes to joke and call “Annie’s Anal.” I watch the girl in front of me. Her expression a mixture of pure determination to hit my pitch but behind her fierce stare, I could tell that the determination was a façade for her uncertainty. This girl has watched her entire team strike out for the past 8 innings, for a moment I felt like I could feel her anxiety building up. The urge to give the opposing team a break was so strong I almost forgot why I was in the game anyway. To win. To absolutely dominate so that there is no terrible consequence once it’s all done and over with. I can feel my body automatically start to compress as my leg bent upward and my arm curled to my chest. Kissing the ball for luck, I swing my arm back. My hand begins tingling as I feel the magic follow through my veins and onto the ball not having to say how I want the ball to fly the magic could already tell what I wanted. It always can tell what I want. As I swing my arm forward the tingling sensation fades completely and as I let go of the ball I see a silver strand streaming between my finger tips and the ball. The strand reminded me of the man in my dream and the silver strands he was taking from Earth. I feel empty. I feel normal. I feel like how I was before.

Before I went to get the henna tattoos done with Sandy. Before Shadow scratched me and the henna leaked into my bloodstream and mixed. Creating the powers I have no. Who would have ever imagined that I, Bethany Turner, would have super powers. To own the ability of flying and controlling the speed of an object when throwing them. Unfortunately I had to discover my flying power publicly which is what got me into this situation. The day I was discovering my flying abilities, I was carrying my box of full loaded diapers from my last customers house when I tripped over my own feet while walking down the steep flight of steps. I remember my heart pounding as I started falling down the concrete steps. I squinted my eyes and strongly wished that I could fly, next thing I knew I could no longer feel the steps underneath my feet. I opened my eyes and saw that the steps were about 10 feet below me.
“Omigod, am I flying?!” I let go of the box of diapers and started soaring through the air feeling pure bliss. Little did I know that I was being filmed.

Sarah Tramp, my meanest customer. The owner of the last house I pick up my diapers from. She told me she recorded my discovery of my flying abilities and will send it to the government. She threatened me with my own nightmare of continuous tests. Of bright lights and proding needles. I couldn’t let this nightmare come true so I asked “Why would you do this to me? Please just give me the videos and this can just stay as a secret between us.”

Sarah’s expression faltered with pity for a quick second before returning the snarl she had on earlier, responding “I don’t care. I will do whatever it takes for me to save this house so that my baby has the chance to grow up in the house he was born in. If this video will earn me the money I need to pay my rent, it will be turned in quicker than you can say ‘wait.’”

Quickly the flyer I saw a couple of months ago popped into my mind, “Wait, if it’s money that you need there is a baseball game that my team will be playing in to win more money than you could ever imagine. If my team wins, I will give you the money and you will no have to give away that tape.”
She agreed. Now I’m here watching as the silver stream is still between my hand and the ball as the ball accelerates forward. It hits me then what the silver stream is. What He was taking from Earth in my dream. My magic is gone and is flying away from me. I can’t have it leave me, I can’t go back to the old Annie, the lonely Bethany Turner.

I run with my hand outstretched crying as the ball flew further away. Can I make it?

Benchmark Reflection

Posted by Imani Johnson in American History - Laufenberg on Thursday, November 10, 2011 at 11:34 am
THe work I created individually on this benchmark was the print ad (the picture below) and the introduction to our site.

Electoral Colleges is not an actual college where people would go for education but a group of people who were chosen to vote for their state during the Presidential elections. Each state has different numbers of electors and is also labeled as a state for Democrats or Republicans. The Electoral College doesn’t acknowledge each voter’s vote so technically the Electoral College only votes for what they want to happen and not what their state wants to happen. The Electoral College takes the voice away from the actual inhabitants of the state and what makes things worse is that the electors aren’t politicians but regular civilians.

This is the link to the final benchmark: https://sites.google.com/a/scienceleadership.org/amending-the-constitution/?pli=1

1) We thought about what really effects people not voting and realized that it was either because of the day it was on or because of how there is a group that has a higher power that votes for them. So we decided to do our project on the Electoral College.

2)The role of an individual in creating and sustaining change is to convince others that they have a voice against all odds. By simply have one people speak up for change it will create a larger voice because his/her community will speak out too which will create a stability for that individual's voice.

3) I realized that the United States is secretly not really a democracy when it comes to the larger more important things. Like voting for the next president. It's not fair because the U.S presents itself as a place where everyone's voice is heard but that's not the case.

4) I knew that displaying things that could catch a person's attention like bright colors, a nice contrast between the colors and also using words that would draw a person is. Using simple, less complicated words so that any audience would be able to understand what the print ad is trying to put out.

Interviewing the Voters

Posted by Imani Johnson in American History - Laufenberg on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at 8:41 pm
Ms. Sonya

She is an employee for the School District and didn't find it appropriate to take a video of her talking about the voting system. Plus my phone didn't have just an audio recorder so I am stuck with zero visual things from her.

1)  What motivated you to come out and vote?

I'm a believer that I have a voice and my voice counts. And that I can make a positive change in my community.

2) What would you like to see changed in our political system?

When first asked: Umm....can I pass on this for a second?

Second time asking: Nothing that I can think of right now. Maybe changing the electoral college. How is it that these little itty bitty states have such big power?

3) Do you know why we vote on Tuesday?

Haha that's weird cause I have no idea. You should research that for me.

4) Are you always sure of who you are going to vote for when you walk into the booth or are you still deliberating?

I'm always sure.

5) What changed do you hope to see in Philadelphia as a result of this election?

I am hopeful that the people who are elected that they put the community's desire before their ow personal agenda and their own desires.

6) What impact do you feel that your vote will have on the election? Did you learn about voting in school? If yes, did that impact your willingness to vote today?

I learned about voting from my parents. Actually as soon as I turned 18 I register to vote. What I hope for is that the person I voted for wins! And that they represent me well.

De Donde Vengo T? Imani - Nick - Annisa

De dnde vengo yo_AnnisaImaniNick 2

GRUPO: Imani Johnson - Annisa Ahmed - Nick Manton

1. For our song, we basically wrote our thoughts on where we're from in Philly, our neighborhood, our family, our customs, and SLA. We each wrote two lines in each verse, but in our refrain we wrote three lines.

2. We learned that it's pretty difficult to write about where we're each individually from and to try to combine that with each's other's point of views. We also learned that re-editing takes time and is a key measure in creating a spectacular project.

3. We are proud are lyrics because they express our inner thoughts and feelings towards the environment we spend everyday of our lives in.

4. We would change the tone of our voice. We sound pretty dry and if we could make it more spicy, it would make our song sound a lot better.

-- EL REFRÁN --

Annisa:

Yo vivo en silencio

Pero vosotros hablais

La ciudad habla

Nick:

Vivo en la ciudad del amor fraternal.

Vivo en la ciudad de la calma, los jovenes, los viejos, el ciudad

Imani:

Yo vengo de alegría y sonrisas.

Muchos extraños personas crean mi vida

¡Mi vida es maravillosa!

Well I also put my facebook in Spanish, and it may have been the most interesting thing I've ever done with my facebook. At some points it was fairly easy to understand but that may have been because I already know what things to click to get around like commenting on people's statuses or liking them. (Liking people's statuses may have been the best part about switching to Spanish) But then to view a video that someone posted on my wall, I could not figure out which button to click. Or on the new bar on the right side of the page where you can see what everyone's doing, it helped seeing certain Spanish words over and over again so that I could figure out what they mean.

Also when chatting people, I noticed that where it says the time the person sent their message, it wasn't like 1: 03 pm, but 13: 01. Which I found odd.

Imani's Immigration Visualization Project Reflection

1. What surprised me most about this information was that although there were many deaths that occurred throughout history due to raids, large accidents, and even just natural deaths, the population of the U.S continued to increase. Even the immigration rate increased at some points but only when colleges opened or laws were passed. But when the U.S were going through their darkest times the immigration stayed low.

2. I think the immigration rate will decrease again due to the fact that our economy is having major issues and the immigrates came to the U.S to have more opportunities but they won't get that opportunity if the U.S can not even support its own people. People who want to immigrate over will recognize it and would decide that they would rather stay in their own country.

3. I wasn't entirely sure how to present my information without being extremely wordy since I found many reasons as to why the immigration rate was changing. So making a bar graph to compare the population rate of the U.S to the immigration rate seemed like a pretty good idea without using any words because it's easy to see the difference.

4. We weren't really sharing a lot of ideas on how to present our information. It would have probably been better if we all did our work at the same time so that we could know what we were working with instead of working on our project while still getting information.

5. If I had the chance to do this project over I would probably add words to my project since the graphs we made don't seem to explain why the rates were changing. So maybe making a picture or collage with the dates in each picture would have helped to explain why things were changing.

1. My refrán is supposed to communicate the basics of where my group and I came from.

2. The fact that with all of our individual refráns we create a story of our backgrounds.

3. It would probably be better if each sentence could flow together and there weren't long sentences.

4. It was hard to really figure out where I'm from since I've lived in so many places, so it was really tough to put where I'm from down in a few sentences when I'm still trying to figure that out for myself.

I Am From

Posted by Imani Johnson in English 3 - Rami on Friday, September 9, 2011 at 2:41 pm
I am from animals stuffed with love and magic,

From open doors and smiling faces.

I am from the creek down the street.

(filled with untold wonders,

unmarked by the trail)

I am from not one place

But many

Traveled to by car and plane

Searching for a place I call home.

I’m from loving faces of smaller mammals,

From a crowing rooster in the morning.

I’m from a small sunny city

             with parents moving to Philly

I’m from she needs to talk more

             To details, details, details!

I’m from numerous nick names

Deprived from book to my world connections,

            Thanks to my freshman year.

I’m from the golden coast of California,

            With recyclable everything.

From albums filled with memorable photos,

Filled of people there’s yet to meet

Along with long lost memories I have yet to keep.

Different places called home all in different places,

One in Nigeria, Maryland, and Philly

I am from the world,

Grown with help from love and happiness.

El video de mi pasado, presente, y mi futuro.

Posted by Imani Johnson in Spanish 2 - Gierke on Friday, June 10, 2011 at 2:39 pm
Completing the project wasn't extremely hard. The really hard past was kind of planning things out and figuring out what I want to do for the project. I think that I put my movie together pretty well. Like choosing the right videos and pictures. If I could do this project over again, I would probably practice my vocabulary more often so that way I would be able to talk on my voiceover better. Also I would have gotten clips of more things. By doing this project I learned how to apply future, present, and past tense and how to relate it to my life.

La Rutina Diaria de Imani Johnson

Posted by Imani Johnson in Spanish 2 - Gierke on Friday, February 25, 2011 at 1:39 pm
From doing this project, I learned how to work with imovie like doing a voiceover. I learned how to conjugate certain verbs and I learned a lot of words that describes what I do everyday. I've also realized how long my days really are because I never realized how much I do each day. I'm actually kind of proud of my final project because I got to film everything with my new camera and I'm happy with the quality of the videos. Another reason as to why I'm proud of it is because I recorded my Spanish sentences pretty well. Like I did better than I thought I would do. I still need some help with pronouncing some words though. Overall I think my project turned out nicely. If I was able to do this project over again I would probably actually film myself rowing, and maybe rehearse with Señorita G before i actually started with recording. I throughly enjoyed working on this project because it really gave me something to do and helped me really connect my Spanish vocab to my life.

Not the Expected by: Imani Johnson

Posted by Imani Johnson in English 2 - Pahomov on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at 9:48 pm

I just entered my Algebra 2 class as my teacher played whatever random song he had in his iTunes. My classmates and I were doing our daily routine of checking to see if any assignments were given back to us and taking our materials out of our bags.  As I was pulling my binder and pencil out of my bag my friend came to bother me.

“Go away!” I tell him pushing him away.

He laughed and started to tickle me while trying to discreetly steal my binder. I laughed and snatched my binder and screech, “Oh my god! Stop it leave me alone!”
“Oh my god leave me alone,” he mocks still reaching for my binder.
“Stop you're so mean to me.”
Still in that mocking tone he imitates me, “Stoppp.”
“Dude really?”
“Why do you talk like that?” he asks.

Ever since I came back from over seas I’ve been asked this same question over and over again, “Why do you talk like that?” I never have a real response for this question except that it’s just the way I talk. As my friend stares at me while he waits for an answer I just ask him, “Talk like what?” I already know his answer before the words even pass his mouth.

“Like a white girl.”

I don’t take his response as an insult knowing that he didn’t mean it as an insult but just his only way to describe my speech. I thought back to 7th grade when I first came back from over seas and felt like an outsider among my friends because of how they talked. They talked in higher voices and talked with using words such as “like”, “oh my god”, or “dude” constantly. Speaking like them meant that you were cool and I was in need to make new friends so I decided to speak like them.  Their language was pretty cool and I got a kick out of speaking the “new” generation’s language. My change in language was a permanent change and became a part of who I am.

Apparently to people I was viewed as white although my skin is brown and my race is African- American. Although what people say, I always thought of myself as African-American. For a while I was confused with why people called me white, but then as I grew I realized what they meant. I didn’t act like how a stereotypical African- American acts: being annoyingly loud, speaks improperly, etc.  I went against my race’s stereotype. Intentionally. It wasn’t because I wanted to become someone I wasn’t but because I wanted to prove those stereotypes wrong. To show that I’m a young educated African- American girl and not a loud, rude, uneducated African-American girl. That I deserved to be respected. I realized that many African- Americans are disrespected because of their language.  My language was created to prove that I’m not what people assumed me to be and to be cool.

As high school came along I was called the “whitest black girl” or when people listened to me talk they or looked through my iTunes they would say I only have white music. My friends not only would say this about me but also my parents.

In the words of James Baldwin, ”Language incontestably, reveals the speaker,” your language greatly defines who you are. This is how most people think and how many racial stereotypes were created. Even so, what happens to those who do not fit under those stereotypes? Where their likes and dislikes aren’t like everybody else in their race, or where they don’t act like others in their race? I’m one of those people who don’t fit under a racial stereotype so many people try to place me under another stereotype.  The most common one I get placed under is “white.”

I realize that not many people are not used to not being able to determine your identity by just observing how you talk. Even I am guilty of judging someone and getting confused because they talked differently than their race’s stereotype. Even though many people talk about how I talk and call me something that I’m not, I will continue to talk the way I talk because people need to understand that language isn’t always the key to someone’s identity.

Oh Hey, It's Spanishl!

Posted by Imani Johnson in Spanish 2 - Gierke on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 9:35 pm
The purpose of this project was to teach Noah different Spanish phrases that would be valuable to know while living in Spain. The goals for this tutorial should teach you how to use verbs in the past and present tense, and how to order something from a restaurant. Another goal for the video was to make it understandable and easy to follow. So that when communicating with someone who speaks Spanish he would be able to break down and understand what they are saying.  We reached our goals by explaining the basic phrases and writing them out so that Noah could have both visual and audio to remember the phrases. Also we performed different scenes and explained what each person said so that he could get a clear understanding of what to say when put on those situations. For example when at a restaurant and he has to order food. In our final product our group is most proud of the amount of information we used in each or explanations on how to say a phrase in Spanish. If we had the chance to do this project over again we would probably just film our scenes in different places.   Some questions that we would have for Noah are if he learned anything from our tutorial and if he is enjoying life in Spain.
