WAR DREAM
Introduction.
Let’s do a story about love. About the coldest war we’ve ever seen and how its outcome changed the world forever. First a little bit about the author. My father was a failed novelist who spent the majority of his days sitting at home behind a plate of mash and the television. Mother was actually a deceptively successful recording artist. She spent her days at the studio toiling away on tracks for musicians from all across the country; always hated discussing her work, the result of either humbling modesty or worn out vocal cords. We lived in a house too big to keep clean, just outside the city of HAM. Though not quite fully submerged in suburbia, it was still an ordeal to get anywhere notable to me as a little one. I began skipping out of school far too young, spending days on end with my good friend Louie Feppo who lived with his mother on the town’s endearingly run-down military base. Under the mother’s disapproving eye Louie and I would rummage through old photos and piece together blueprints. We read accounts from journals and war logs and played out the fantastic fantasies scurrying about the vast empty hanger. There were too many things in those logs we didn’t understand, things nobody could hope to understand at that point. Didn’t care. Later on, we would bring girls over and hook up in the cockpits of dismantled bombers. Some nights, kids from the city would bring their trucks, bottles, red cups onto the landing strip where we would turn on the flood lights and dance and boogie till sunrise. When they played top chart records, I could hear my mother’s voice behind the rest of the clatter and felt funny in my gut.
I moved far away from HAM at age nineteen, went to live on the farm with my uncle and his lover Dean. They had gotten too old to tend to their small orange field so they contacted my father and asked if it wouldn’t be too much trouble to send some help over. At that point father was too apathetic and had gained too much weight to be in any position to lend a hand himself, so he had the smart idea of plucking me out of school and sending my hand along to lend his poor brother. The TV’s had been flooded with some strange new programming in those months before I left, I remember all the kids were feeling how I was feeling. We wanted to get out of wherever we were; the farm would be a welcome change of scene. After what must have been around two weeks of intense farm work I was full of regret and my brain was all spent and my legs were near busted and the sickles had all rusted. Uncle and Dean were very considerate, for they seemed to have already accepted their own fate. The Arnold family farm gobbled up what was left of their orange stock and snatched up their land a heartbeat after they stopped showing up to marketplace. Seeing as that farm was just about everything Uncle and Dean had aside from each other, it starts to make some sense that the day after Arnold’s acquisition they decided to stick a pair of shotguns up their mouths. I was sick to my stomach over the whole ordeal and decided I wasn’t in any mindstate to go home; and, as much as I had started to miss Ma and Pa and Louie, the thing I missed most was dreaming about those airplanes flying. Louie’s old lady gave Yellow Hand Base up for demolition (From the good old grapevine I’ve heard it’s been since converted into an art gallery or something like that) and lastly I didn’t even know what HAM would be like if I came back around. It had been two years. Looking back doesn’t seem like a whole lot considering the hell I’ve gone through since; but to a young boy, two years reaping snatched away with no rewards felt like the worst fate a man could be given. I took what I could from Uncle and Dean’s place and slipped out quietly before anyone from Arnold’s found the place. Set out on a road that I thought would take me to NED Yolk but instead ended up about a hundred miles south in the city of Hillderbrandt. I had grown out a beard by the time I got into town, hated to look like that upon first contact. The morning coming into Hills was the first time I had seen a human who wasn’t looking over the wheel of a tin can in god knows how long. I could feel the age on my skin, and knew that things would be different when I struck real land. I just never imagined how different.
P1. Dream.
During my year on the streets and gutters of Hillderbrandt, I always dreamed of death. I dreamed about slipping away unnoticed by the masses, miles away from family, years away from loved ones. I was blending in with the dimness death even in harsh daylight. I wouldn’t have even put it past pedestrians to simply ignore my passing. My body would have most likely just been viewed as an accessory to the filthy back alleys; the working men and women need not even look. I dreamed these hilariously horrible dreams on the daily. But I never once dreamed that I, this lowly trash of a man, would be blessed by audience with the queen. It was at the point that my career as a vagrant had reached its nadir that I was contacted for to inform me of my visit with the queen in three months.
I hesitate to refer to those next three months as “short months” because we all know that a month is a month and no matter of eagerness or joyfulness can change the cycle of the moon. But I tell you, those months certainly sped by. Nearly the day after the Red Man attendant had shaken some sense into me on the roadside, I dreamed of something different. Even though I still lay in the dirt and shivered as the winter’s harsh jaw bite away at me, my dreams were no longer plagued. I had one particularly pleasant one that recurred quite often. It goes as such:
A soccer field near an old girlfriend’s house. Louie and I would often smoke a cigarette each and sip our sodas while we watched the older kids train for their tournaments or whatnot. The field’s once stadium-grade lights had all puttered out and so kids would climb atop the poles in admittedly dangerous displays of their acrobatic prowess. They would fill the burned out bulbs with bottles of homemade glowing jelly and leave them up there for maybe a week or so, just until they faded out and the ritual repeated itself. No parents were ever surprised when the headlines at breakfast told of local children turned into splats on the ground after attempting to better illuminate their drunken football matches. Eventually they weren’t even honored with headlines, just shoved to the third or fourth page inserts above the bicycle ads. Anyway, in the dream at hand, there were no children plummeting from those towering lampposts. In fact I was alone with Louie, and the field was only lit by moons. There were more trees than usual, and it was quieter than usual, and the buildings were bigger than usual, Louie dressed the usual. He looked very sexy in moonlight, and we were both cold and he wore a scarf and there was a creek that had started to crackle a ways away from the pitch. All of a sudden there was an airliner with a red tail landed in the midfield. It looked at once like it had been ripped from the black and white photos we always poured through, as well as from an image of childhood. Reminded me of the plane with the red tail that my father often described when recounting the fable of Home Sweet. I don’t know if the tail was his own added detail or part of history or part of myth or what. Louie and I climbed in through a series of complex hatches, we spent ages fumbling around under the belly looking for the right dos and don’ts. It was still dark but we both grinned gleefully. The interior, though dusted with healthy a coat of dust, kicked around with some hard kicking boots, still riled me up inside. I ran my hands along the torn stretches of velvet on the seats, and I didn’t care that this creature was a relic. It was romantic.
Louie had managed to pry open the door to the cockpit, colored lights were flipping and flopping around gaily under their own coat of dust. It was still too dim to make out any labels. I pulled a flashlight out of my opposite hand and batteries out of somewhere else. There was a spurt and a sputter, then a warm and gooey stream of golden gold poured out across the control panel. Louie was fascinated by all this stuff, and I was fascinated by him. He pulled out an instruction manual from some sort of glove box and collapsed into the captain’s chair. I sat in the seat behind him and adjusted my seat so we were level with each other. There was a green captain’s hat in my lap and, after a once over to get rid of the dusty film, I slapped that old thing onto Louie’s head. He ignored his head, eyes locked on the diagrams. I wandered back into the main cabin, took off my muddy boots and straightened my socks. The black cotton worked wonders on the cherry wood floorboards. I slide up and down the aisle, propelling myself along with the springy spring seat backs. I was maybe ten years old. Some five minutes had passed and I was still lost in my sliding, I had gotten a really good one going too. All the way from the back of the cabin, around the galley, to the main passenger seating area. I felt like an ice skater as I swerved and spun and then I stopped. By the time I had flung myself halfway up the fuselage, time had stopped and I was still. I whipped my head around to see what was the matter and my eyes were caught by the window to my left. I scurried into the seat closest to it and stared out. The moonlit field was rotating before my eyes. I felt it in my stomach and I thought I was going to be sick. I felt in my head and then my ears and I thought I was going brain explode myself. When I pried them open a moment later the field was gone and I could see moons ten times brighter, I could see clouds and birds and even bigger pelicans flying in place. Flying with us. I rolled out of my seat, wracked with astonishment, and sprinted into the captain’s cabin. Louie turned to me and beamed. I followed his finger, pointing straight ahead, and fainted. We were in clouds together.

Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim by David Sedaris
Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim
David Sedaris
Dress Your Family is a collection of autobiographical essays and short stories painting a picture of Sedaris’ childhood and documenting his later adventures living in Paris and finding a career with his recognizable wit.
Review:
Although I am relatively new to the work of David Sedaris I can say without a doubt that this particular collection resonated with me on a plethora of levels. Although I can’t yet look back on my own childhood and reflect on it as deeply as Sedaris can, I can relate to at least some part in all of his stories while still finding his signature humor present throughout.
The book opens with a grouping of stories that paint a picture of his childhood and his family dynamic, setting up the context for the rest of his hilarious antics years down the line.
We are introduced to his parents and given a taste of the hardships of life in the south. He delves into early issues with his homosexuality and the dilemmas he found himself in. The attitude towards homosexuality has become increasingly more positive since the years when our narrator was growing up. One of the first stories we hear is about an excruciatingly awkward sleepover Sedaris has with a neighborhood friend. He broaches the topic of his own bullying with such a comedic tone making you almost forget what the subject material is. Although it seems the focus of this particular story is make you laugh, there are layers to it that lay the groundwork for stories to come, driving home the emotional importance. In the sleepover story, titled “Full House”, Sedaris finds himself in the midst of a strip poker game with a group of boys who aren’t very fond of him. Though this may have been a trying experience for any child figuring out their sexuality it must have been crushing to be bullied by these boys as well. Lingering on the impacts left by this possibly traumatic experience is not what the story sets out to do though, soon we are hearing about how our protagonist actually excelled at the poker game and turning the tables in a hilarious resolution.
After the initial chapters he has fostered the beginnings of a relationship with the reader, letting you in on aspects of his life that seem so personal and genuine. He is almost telling the story to you specifically. This is where his writing style exceeds all prior expectations.
Many of his essays and stories are used on his own book tours, read aloud to a live audience. And after listening to a few of these recordings, you come to realize that he is reciting his stories specifically to you. Though his text is autobiographical it never once felt analytical, each story has its own arc and climax; they are crafted to be heard by people and incite laughter and joy. He doesn’t take the topic of autobiography as an exercise in documentation, but as a means to extract the most relatable and genuinely funny story and put it into the readers hands. His stories are lasting and resonant, and as I stated before, many of them go beneath the surface and touch some real emotional areas. He seems to tap into the stories heart as a tool for the comedy, giving each a more legitimate feel.
In his story “Chicken in the henhouse” he illustrates how the attitude towards homosexuality in certain parts of the United States has either changed drastically or is in drastic need of change. He finds himself in an awkward situation with a young boy in his hotel complex shortly after news stories about homosexual pedophillia had been plaguing every available television channel. He describes his feelings toward issues like this with so much personality and articulation that you can’t just ignore what he is saying and read for the jokes. The jokes all come from a place of truth, as every good joke should, and reflect on the bigotry and prejudice he felt in certain situations. The story with the young boy in the hotel is one of the most hilarious for a number of reasons, but it also manages to make itself the most relevant story, tying the undertones from the rest of the book together. He doesn’t do it with a big show, he doesn’t pretend to have some grand realization, he just connects the stories seamlessly and then continues on his way to making you laugh as hard as you possibly can.
Be it “Chicken in the henhouse” where he addresses some more heavy issues with a comedic tone, or “Six to eight black men” where he goes on a complete tangent and discusses Christmas traditions in the Netherlands in surprising amount of detail, each story in this compilation feels polished and perfected. No story felt out of place in any way or even fell flat. I honestly cannot try and poke holes in the logic or the storytelling because at the end of the day this is a book where you can laugh with the author; you can laugh at his mistakes right alongside him. It fulfills its purpose with ease and with flair and I was never once disappointed. I recomend Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim to anyone who wants to laugh.

Final Spanish Reflection
Macromolecule Portfolio - reflection
Mini-Capstone:
- This year was not my finest effort in biochem, I did not apply myself and ended up regretting it in the end. In the final quarter, our group slacked off and sealed our own fate. We were given ample time to recover our grades but never took advantage off it. I came into this year expecting to progress logically from the biochem we took in ninth grade. I was excited at the promise of more fun science and figuring out how to solve problems in a creative way. Although my year was plagued with some bad assignments and missed deadlines, I was fairly proud of my first quarter project with Mia Weathers Fowler. We completed our macromolecules portfolio and slideshow with all checkpoints completed and making all deadlines.
- At Sla we learn to work in accordance to the core values. Inquiry, research, collaboration, presentation, and reflection. The macromolecule portfolio, although deviating slightly from the other projects in the class, followed fairly closely to the core values. The values are not only a recommendation or a system designed to get your grades up, in fact they actually influence your experimenting and researching to point of genuine intrigue. By the end of our portfolio I was fully invested in finishing it to the best of my ability. I wanted to finish it correctly.
- Inquiry: We were tasked with the assignment to figure out the purposes of various macromolecules. We had a daunting task ahead of us and needed to go at it with the right mindset.
- Research: We divided the work up as evenly as possible and set off to work. The key here was to chose the topics we each identified with. Something I think severely affected my performance in the later quarters was my lack of engagement. I never took the time to connect with a project; at least enough to put in a satisfying amount of effort. Without proper research, your project will crumble quickly.
- Collaboration: Working with Mia was one of the highlights of the project. She rallied the group to go above and beyond and essentially lead us to make the best project we could. The key to collaboration is not to ever carry anyone’s weight. Once you start vouching for a fellow teammate and taking hits for them, their requirement to contribute lessens and the workload will inevitably become unbalanced. I think that since we were all so invested in project from the get-go collaboration came naturally.
- Presentation: Our presentation worked well in adding to the project while never bogging it down. I think it is difficult to strike a balance between a good design and an informative one. I don’t think our presentation ever became an issue and in the end, I would wager it was one of the strongest points of our entire project.
- Reflection: I think if I could go back, I would just add a general level of polish to the whole experiment and make up for the time I could have spent more efficiently towards the beginning. I should have been ready to go right out of the gate but instead, I ended up not putting in 100% until we already off the ground. Hopefully my performance in the later stages of the project justified it.
- Conclusion: I really wish I had taken advantage of my opportunities this year and really stepped into my own fate. I guess I will learn from this and come into junior year ready to give it my all.
Social change
My History Portfolio:
I remember vividly the first day of the trail, anxiety coursing through my veins. I knew this project was going to be something else the day we learned about it. It was going to magical. This whole class has taught me to march to the beat of my own drum, and take control of my own education. I have experimented with many different projects, each of which had descriptions pliable enough to craft something unique. Every single project was more original and innovative than the last and made me think of ideas in history in expanses of new ways.
Social change is the result of creative minds putting their best work together, rallying the people and just giving it your all. A job worth doing is one worth doing right so you might as well give your 100% every time. The ideas of social change I learned in this class have rocked me to my core, shedding new light on historical instances I had prior knowledge on. The vast amount of freedom allowed in each project really let me run wild with my creativity. Each worksheet and assignment on a topic wove masterfully constructed questions together with insightful commentary on the source material allowing me to really get imaginative with each response. We could always count on Mr. Block to provide the necessary information during pause breaks in movies. They were useful and unobtrusive and really helped me understand some of the trickier topics.
In order to understand myself I had to do some deep soul searching. At first, I was unsure about this class, the assignments were vexing on a deep moral level and the near laissez faire setup of the class intimidated me. But by the time we were setting up our play outlines I was raring to go and giddy as ever. The plays really opened my eyes to how social inequality ticks and what the driving forces are. Mr. Block let us go wild with this project and I think it really affected how the plays turned out. The limitations were unobtrusive helping each play find its own footing and really become something else. “I don’t know why I was so excited by this. It didn’t mean anything for sure yet. What was I thinking” This is a quote from play.
I wish had spent less time on drawing in my notebook, I wasted all that paper doodling instead of letting my ideas on the state of the world flow out onto the pages. It is my biggest regret. And, now, at the close of this long spectacular year, I can see what a huge mistake I’ve made. My drawings were mere distractions, roadblocks on my journey to becoming a socially-conscious adult. I should have soaked in every bit of sacred information that was provided for me in this class instead of letting it slip away, dripping through my open hands. This class makes me love history and I walk away a better man because of it.

La vida de Seymour Hoffman
Sin embargo - however
sorprendentes - surprising
demostrar - show
actuación - acting
estilo - style
extremadamente - extremely
austero - uncanny, strange
sereno - serene

The Ukraine
península - peninsula
Principalmente - mainly
injustamente - unfairly
zonas - zone

Me gusta “The Beatles” mucho.
Revolutions Guidebook Video
For this unit on the study of revolutions I decided to try my hand at animating a rough presentation to go along with my voice over. The focus of the topic relied heavily on the impact of revolutions throughout history, from the French and Haitian to the more recent Arab spring. I have been pursuing studying the effects of activism versus pacifism since we completed a study of civil rights last year. That class garnered my interest in the rivaled works of MLK and Malcolm X. That interest permeates through my presentation and remains the backbone for my other research.

“The overthrow of the dictator Milosevic in Serbia represents a truly interesting case for students of revolution, in that it happened so genuinely peaceful and popular. In a sense it represents what today within revolution studies are called the “new revolutions” (started by the revolutions in Nicaragua and Iran but made clear for everyone during the 1989/1990 wave of revolutions in Eastern Europe and Soviet Union). The film “Bringing Down a Dictator” is a documentary that describes the whole process (more info about how to get it here). I think we all have something to learn from the Serbian experience.”

Keystone Pipeline monologues
Introduction
The Keystone Pipeline is a surprisingly unknown current event that is threatening to change the oil industry in the U.S and Canada. This change in industry can be construed in many different lights due to the many different forces that are trying to shift the tides of it’s fate. On the more conservative side you will find people arguing that this oil pipeline will be the necessary boost to job generation that the U.S needs, limiting our dependencies on our oil supply from non allied countries. However, like any project that impacts the environment, there are swathes of citizens (both American and Canadian) who are opposing and appealing this project, trying to hold Obama to his word about trying to find more carbon friendly energy options. This oil pipeline would be transporting crude (unrefined) oil from canadian “tar sands” down through the middle of the United states to the gulf of mexico. Since so much of the project relies on the cooperation of the U.S. the final decision is left to the president, what he chooses to do with this choice is at the forefront of many peoples’ minds as the deadline for this pipeline looms nearer.
Part Two
1. The keystone pipeline will only create temporary unsustainable jobs.
2. The oil the pipeline transports is just has crude as other imported oil.
3. Obama has been chosen to make the final decision about the continuation of the pipeline.
4. The pipeline will cross over hundreds of water sources through the u.s.
5. The pipeline will limit our dependencies on oil from our supposed "enemies" in middle eastern countries.

Vanadium print (August Polite)
I researched a little bit about my element (vanadium) and its properties. The most interesting thing I found was an image of a small bit of vanadium in a strange circular interlacing pattern, which was the inspiration for my print.
research
I did some minor research on the topic, learning about the purpose and uses of vanadium. I eventually just settled with the image I had found before, since vanadium's practical uses were not that interesting.
collaboration
I helped my friends decide on their final designs, learning about their element, while they gave me input on my design.
presentation
I tried to make my design look as nice as possible while keeping it simple. I lost a large part of the aesthetic in the printing process, underestimating how difficult it would be to convey shading on the linoleum.
Reflection
I am fairly happy with the end result I obtained, however in the future (since I now have a better understanding of the medium) I will try to take a more reasonable approach.
This side of Paradise (F. Scott Fitzgerald)
This Side of Paradise
F. Scott Fitzgerald
a review by August Polite
The story of Amory Blaine is an interesting one; though not an immediately gripping dialogue, it does not fail to interest the reader in a way that most books simply cannot accomplish. The story of Amory is relatable, but mysteriously captivating, and funny at times. The story is an American classic and it holds up surprisingly well, offering a different style of writing that isn’t really used much today. The story doesn’t begin with a proper exposition of the characters, instead it starts by dropping you right into the story of this peculiar character, letting you get a feel for what is happening in the world. Throughout the first sections of Amory’s life it feels more like a biography instead of a novel. The character seems so real and is described in such a realistic and detailed manner that at times, you forget that he is in fact a piece of fiction. He comes across as a conventional advantageous and affluent young man in the twenties, striving to get ahead in life; a very relatable format, although some may find lulls at points in the story.
Many have claimed that “This side of Paradise” is not one of Fitzgerald prize works, but that it was a necessary step for him to find his rhythm. I have only read some fragmented sections of “the Great Gatsby” (one of Fitzgerald’s most prestigious works) and somewhat agree with the book’s critics, however “This Side of Paradise” has a different appeal. It feels more like a window into Fitzgerald’s past and offers a look at his climb to fame.

blog #3 hunger/homeless canned food campaign
I was at quite a standstill on my “you and the world” project for the majority of this year. I was at a loss for what I should do to advance my campaign, and where I should go with it in the last quarter. I had not really been sure of what I would do to assist my cause on a local basis, everything I planned on doing did not seem to work out. my inclination to come up with a viable option was draining quickly, when I remembered something.
The school I attended for middle school would always run a canned food drive and I was always interested in the process. An administrator and I exchanged a few emails, and within a day I knew how I could help my cause. The cans and non-perishable foods would always go the food pantry at saint mark’s church, and the best way I could help was to donate more cans. It was fairly late in the game to be starting my project, but I had high expectations and threw together some signs and boxes. I thought that I could help out the food pantry for at least the last few months of school, just by donating what cans we could accumulate in the short time period.
In hindsight I should have advertised more adamantly for my project, seeing as no one really payed any attention to it. I gained enthusiasm for the project as time progressed, but never acted properly or at the right time. Seeing as my project slightly fell flat (in terms of actually causing a change) I plan on continuing to run my canned food drive for as long as I can (haha, “can”). I will do my best to run a proper advertising campaign, including announcements in the newsletter, signs around school, and going around to alert different advisories about the drive. I would like to really make an impact on the homeless and hungry people in my community and am disappointed that I could not do as much as I would have liked for this project. Saint Mark’s church has been around for over 20 years, helping out hungry people and spreading happiness to the less fortunate. I would like to continue my canned food drive at SLA and hopefully begin something that could change lives.

August Polite- negative space
Negative space is the area around an object, opposed to the area within the object.
B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your still life drawing?
I drew the area around the chair by filling in that space with pencil strokes. I symbolized the actual space by leaving it blank.C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?
Because the object floating in the air can seem disjointed, it is good to include an environment.D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?
It can in the right time/place.Final Perspective drawing-Polite
a. What is one thing that your learned specifically that you did not know before. I learned how to draw with lots of detail, as well as how to carefully observe my environment.b. How did leaning this thing make your drawings better. I was able to create a mental presence of the room in my drawing. Without observing yourdrawing might not convey anything. c. If you did this assignment again, what would you do differently? I would probably remember to upload it on time.d. What is your advice to someone who has never drawn a one point perspective drawing before? I would recommend doing your measurements carefully, check to see what is commensurate and what the proportions are.e. What resource helped you the most and why? I didn't use many of the sources, with enough trial and error you can create a pretty good representation of something. |
Macbeth creative portion-August Polite
Description:
This diagram/poster displays the similarities between the stories of AMC's Breaking Bad and Shakespeare's Macbeth. Although the two stories are not directly related in many aspects, general themes are transferable between them. I flushed out the majority of these within the chart by illustrating them in a simplified form. I tried to incorporate my quotes into the illustrations by having each of the relations correlate to one or more of the quotes I chose.
Questions:
a. My project was about relating the themes that Shakespeare created in Macbeth and seeing how they relate to media in modern times. The ideas and story telling devices in Macbeth are still very viable options for writers to use today.
b. I tried to make an easy-to-understand chart that displayed the similarities and story sections/themes.
c. At first it was difficult to draw all of the characters in a consistent style, but after a few drafts I got the hang of it and started on the final. I am not that good with photoshop, but this was a good learning experience for future projects.
d. I am most proud about the style I used to draw all of the characters. I think they turned out really well. I used the Macbeth charter designs from the Patrick Stuart version, and those characters worked very well along side the Breaking Bad characters.
e. I would find a way to incorpate the quotes better into the actual art; I think that flaw might be the downfall of my project.
f. I learned about making a good vocal presentation to the audience.
g.I learned that when you are really invested in part of the project and you put your best work into it, it becomes less of a chore. I really wanted this project to reflect some of my skills, and not to be sloppy.
August's Q3 reflection
Homelessness Rates
Writing about a topic like homelessness can be fairly tricky, it is hard for a student to get solid first hand information. This may just be because I am not that talented at talking to people, let alone strangers. The difficult part is differentiating the people who have just been exposed to series of unfortunate events and are still hurting, or the people who have sunk into their own failure and ended up victims of their own collapse.
Much of what makes these victims fall into this spiral is based on how people think of them. There are many people who will judge a person on the street at first glance. This may be unjust due to the fact that there are many homeless people that could potentially be dangerous or mentally unsound. Four thousand, that may not seem like an amount to warrant any infatuation, this is the number (approximately) of people who do not legally have homes. This is a number that should be lowered, drastically. One way to help is, instead of giving charity and walking away feeling like a great person as many people seem to have done, http://tinyurl.com/candf82,) going to a shelter to help out. The shelters need assistance to stay sustained, most of the shelters seem to close during the summer causing many homeless people to relinquish their constant source of nourishment, shelter, and home. Going to a shelter is not a thing that everyone is obliged to partake in, there are many other ways to try and mend this cause. Many local establishments offer food drives, sandwich making, and other things that can really help. Homelessness has been on a steady rise in cities like Philadelphia, much of this is due to the scarcity of reasonable health plans. Many people who need health care plans will run out of money on insurance that should ease worrying, not cause more. In the past year the rate of homelessness has been up and down; generally falling steadily, there is no way of predicting where we will be in a few years.
Good ways to help out include, helping shelters with supplies or even making food to send on the weekends. I have seen many schools and other public locations offer food drives and things of that nature, and frankly these things are exactly what we need more of in this city (Philadelphia).
Paper Towns-John Green
-August Polite
Not many books, or any pieces of art for that matter, will change your opinion (unless that was the intended purpose). Paper Towns carelessly delves into a memorable teenage adventure that knows where and when to take itself seriously. I enjoy the story’s evolution as well as the evolution of the characters. The main character “Q” progresses from a scared child to a young adult sinking into a cold depression while in search of the mysterious girl he doesn’t quite understand. This girl (Margo) is the focus of the novel, and her actions reel the reader in as much they reel in her fellow characters. She decides to fall out of line and do something drastic and shake up her entire life.
What makes this book special is its dedication to its point. I never found myself questioning the author and at some moments I completely forgot that there even was a person in control of these children’s lives all along. The ideas the book brings up are very poignant and thoughtful topics, from both parts of story. On one side there is the confused boy, he is enthralled and excited by Margo’s sudden disappearance but is soon flooded by a whole other slew of emotions, when he questions her motives and begins to lose sight of his goal. Without spoiling too much of the story, Margo’s deep thoughts of life provide a moving adventure timed with near precision and timing to keep a brilliant and engaging pace.
I greatly enjoyed this book for its deep undertones and quirky exterior, no other book has kept itself in my mind even while I had finished the last page. It questions our system, how we will eventually just follow our designated paths even if we become successful won’t we always be in the shadow of something else. Margo’s logic is what really drives this book, her craving to rebel almost makes me want to rebel as well. The book makes you want to do something different with your life.

I put a lot of digital art there and it is starting to expand rapidly. This is an important part of my life because I hope to use this as a mean to bridge out to the professional art world. I just added the visual art portion of my life, but I also am trying to branch out to the musical strata in the form of an E.P I am working on.
I like the show “Adventure Time” and draw things about it as well as
the art for the ipad app:“Sword and Sworcery”.
The art I do is not exactly for the game but I have come into contact with the creator and he has commented on my art and added it to his blog.

I think that music is an important thing and should be appreciated by all but sadly is not. I can do literally nothing to change that, people have different tastes and move along on different paths. I like to think that I will make music in the future, however all of my failed attempts linger in my head and almost prevent me from progressing because I never think what I have is good. I am constantly belittled by friends who can see with a fresh slate and just do whatever they want to do. I would like to help kids out with music at my old school where there is a very strong after school program.
I walk through Rittenhouse square quite often and have met some pretty interesting people that deserve some recognition. Not to be pessimistic but there is really nothing I can do to enact the individual success or happiness of each of these people. If I were trying to make money playing music, I would not rely on the assistance of a high school student for my revenue.
The main focus of my idea was to help homeless people make some money. I will expand on that before getting into my current idea; I see homeless musicians much better than myself on the street all the time and most people don’t even turn to look. I know some good samaritans would stop and donate a dollar or so, but most people walk blindly by. I think that some of these musicians deserve better. I researched the laws and regulations on what I could do in a public space and many of them are restricting to my plan which was to busk with the musicians in a more organized way. After toying with this idea I found two main flaws: The first being, I could insult some performers by offering my “help” when they believe that it is not needed, secondly I could get in trouble for creating a commotion or the like.
I think that I will do more behind the scenes work such as raising awareness in the form of videos that I will find/compile and using the after school club with the little kids, because maybe they will be able to offer more to society when they are my age are older. I will be teaching the kids about music and it’s affect and hopefully get a few of them excited to help these musicians on the streets.
