For my capstone I held weekly discussions every Tuesday during Y-band titled, Makeup Conversations. The slogan for the weekly discussion was, There is Diversity in Beauty. In order to cultivate these discussions I created lesson plans to research the origins of makeup. Inclusive of the historical connections of cosmetics to geography and related concepts we live by in the makeup artistry realm. Additionally, examining the conceptualization that makeup has on society today, both positive and negative. Also, including the social implications of using makeup and why we follow certain trends. The evidence of these discussions were my blog posts which are uploaded on my website.

The most challenging process of my project was completing the research. Furthermore, to come to an understanding of how we have transformed certain ingredients into our cosmetics. My goal for holding these discussions was to learn more about the significance and role that makeup plays in the life of an average SLA student. For clarification, anyone was allowed to participate in my capstone, whether they wore makeup or not. We discussed a range of topics, from the new “natural” look with using filters and touching on cultural appropriation: hair and beauty. Although, there were some difficulties with staying consistent with conversation dates, when the group would come together there was a highly resourceful amount of information to take away. I found this source useful because it provides connections between women and the cosmetics industry. There were many scholarly resources such as experiments referenced by the author such as studies done between the influence of cosmetics and self-esteem. This source was highly reliable. Furthermore, the findings in the document were insightful, believable, and easy to understand. There were both positive and negative relationships explored in the research that were referenced. Providing an excellent scope on how cosmetics, women, the consistent use of makeup, and most importantly self-confidence are linked. In addition, the statistical result data given at the end of the paper.

This source was highly reliable to my research because it explored a number of theories and issues within their cultural indifference that could connect to self-image issues. Using the source struck out to me as important because all of the other sources I researched were surveying white women and there was no cultural range that could be a variable in the results. It provides information about the subjects memories and early experiences of using cosmetics. Which was highly unexpected to find in a graduate level research paper I thought. This made me want to continue to read and understand the text even more.

This source was very reliable because it details how the art of makeup being both on and off screen was complex to make sure the models were correctly shaded. Reading this also helped me understand the unpleasant shade range we already have and how it’s still expanding. It is a complication of being more than just a technical problem but a “ideological” one. Using this source provides a better understanding of what Max Factor and Elizabeth Arden were working on, rather competing to accomplish. When reviewing this I didn’t think it would explore so much such as naturalism in cinema, Pan-Cake Make-Up, nor provide so many examples of movies that has this problem.

This source helped me learn more about Max Factor’s techniques when it came to television productions. This source was reliable because it was written by Mr. Factor himself. Also, it has a example of what eye makeup should look like on different shaped eyes. In addition, this source is in a magazine about the trends of fashion and makeup in hollywood. One limitation of this source is that it is focused solely on Sylvia Sidney’s application of makeup. This article however does not exactly serve as a guide to “Beauty Perfection” because of the small window of certain styles look best on different eyes. Yet, considering the time period the application of makeup was still fairly being figured out.

Using this source helped me look deeper into more social experiments. I don’t think this source was completely reliable but it was helpful in understanding the social ramifications of wearing makeup in different environments. Plus, the anxiety that can follow with wearing a full face to certain places, such as school, over elsewhere such as a party. Also, it can make a woman feel like she isn’t pretty enough but this experiment draw conclusions to acceptance after not using makeup for a while. Although, there was no exact answer to have confidence effects makeup this study was made very similarly to the Ann Marie Britton honors theses paper on “The Beauty Industry's Influence on Women in Society”.

Using this source helped me identify how the art of makeup circled into Europe in around the 1500s. It also assisted me in understanding the crucial work of “whiteness” and how lighter shades were always over other shades (ignoring the aspects of racial disparity when it address class). However, when considering other races such as the Welsh the reasoning behind skin darkening were solely for entertainment. This source is highly reliable and serves as a timeline of the art that comes to whitening and darkening skin. It also provides specific terms for the products used back in history to “paint” their faces.

While reading this source I found it to be very scientific, with the use of its language and the structure of the article was set up much like an experimental paper which I did not expect. This source was helpful because reading the text may have been difficult but examining the tables of data results made it easier to follow along. Although this document was a a little more advanced than expected, it provides a clear conclusion following all of the data. One additional piece from this source that was also helpful was the evaluation of the subjects on their experience with makeup and how they gathered their qualitative data. Using an interview and different scales with a generous number of subjects provided a large range distribution of their data.

This source when first reading it did not come across as being completely reliable. Yet, as I continued to read it I understood the language being used about the purpose of regulations in different regions of the world with the connections to the time periods.  It provides as a document that explains the objective of regulations in makeup. I selected this source because it provides a clear timeline of what was happening around the world with lipstick useage. In addition, it details the laws and acts that were passed or even failed in making the the mandates of what could be in lipstick.

I selected this particular source because it was a graduate level paper and I was curious to how the author’s findings compared to others that I have already read. Some limitations of this source compared to others I have read was that the author left out a guiding question on how confident the subject feels not wearing makeup. Also, they all attended the same university in The Fashion Industry course. Without comparing this source to the others, it is more specific in its language. This source provides a precise definition of terms section which is different than what was expected. The findings in this source were very reliable to my research.

I chose this source because it provided a very specific context in the introduction. This source also provided paradox of cosmetics which is something I’ve also wondered about and wanted to touch on in the discussions during my capstone. Also this chapter goes in depth about sexual differences within facial recognition. In which, to draw connections and conclusions on how makeup is to facial attractiveness, not much by sex. However, the relation can still be made because of women using makeup over men. This source wasn’t all that I expected it to be but it was highly useful and very reliable to understanding some paradoxes in cosmetic usage.

5 Min of Science: Cannabinoids & Depression

Science: The Endocannabinoid system is a physiological processes affecting pain modulation, memory and appetite. As our body has different receptors from the brain to the immune system that all connect forming this system. Which induces the chemicals that connect causing the physical or more physiological euphorias in the brain. 

Society: With depression there are treatments used to cure it such as medication, anti-depressants, but scientists find cannabinoids to "slow down" the communication between cells.  THC, or Tetrahydrocannabinol, which is found in all strains of Cannabinoids has a number of medical applications but used more often as a recreational use. 

Self: I believe in medical marijuana because it has therapeutic potential in people with not only Depression but also people with spasms and physiological disorders. In addition I think that recreational marijuana relieves people of anxiety and fills dopamine in the endocannabinoid system.

Angela Yvonne Davis

Angela Yvonne Davis is an African-American female born on January 26, 1944 in the South. Particularly in Birmingham, Alabama. I think being born during this time period and in this particular place it progressed her fight for equal rights. She is well known for her activism under gender equality, civil rights and political issues dating back to the earliest dates of the late 1960s. Her activism sheet would stand as long from being jailed, removed from buildings, joining “radical” organizations and groups to even leading The Black Liberation Movement. The movement, or rather army according to Wikipedia, states that it was a run-off/continuation of the Black Panther Movement.


Ms. Davis is in movies and is also a well-known book writer on the exact issues that she has been though and fought for all her life. Her first book was published in 1974 titled as, Angela Davis: An Autobiography. Over 42 years she has written 11 books and one that was published this year! From titles like The Black Family: The Ties That Bind (By Angela Davis and Fania Davis), Women, Culture and Politics (Angela Davis) and Beyond the Frame: Women of Color and Visual Representation (Angela Davis) it is clear that she talks about topics we have surface leveled discussions about in class. She has a career currently at the University of California: Santa Cruz teaching under the title of Distinguished Professor Emerita in the Feminist Studies Department.


Through my research, I’ve come to learn that Ms. Davis still speaks out about her struggles through the political black movement in the 70s and 60s. As her number one movement sparking debate and a sentence of 18 months in jail for being linked to a murder of a jail guard by an associate, George Lester Jackson. Him and a few others were also later a part of The Black Liberation Movement with Davis. Yet, prior to this correspondence she was apart of the Che-Lumumba Club branch in the Communist Party. So this association to the party progressed her charges in the 18 month sentence.

In conclusion, Angela Yvonne Davis was a prominent figure in the change and advancement of women, race, class and culture all over the spectrum.  Beginning in the 16th Street Baptist Church Bombing in Birmingham, to which she lost friends in up to today’s fight for equality. Although she is 72 she still speaks out to the public, writes books and poetry that all talk about the same problems she was addressing 42 years ago to date her first writing. This goes to show that our problems and things that were heavily fought for by many African-Americans, Women and Low/Middle-Class citizens haven’t changed very much. My mother is 46 and in terms of the amount of years Ms. Davis has written proves that many Americans, specifically African-Americans have lived through this fight since we were born. It was sparked before you and I were in this world, it is continuing as we live through it now and it is a chance that it will still be here after you and I perish. The only way to change this is by fighting and voicing our opinion for justice and equal rights just as Angela Davis does still today.

Timeline

  1. 1963: Angela was dearly affected by the Birmingham church bombing. In addition she formed the ideas very young that she wanted to help those who were black and poor, later noted in her book.

  2. 1968: Angela joined the Communist party (Che-Lumumba Club) and was also question to being in the Black Panther Party. However, the sources on her association with the group was never documented or proven.

    1. “the only path of liberation for black people is that which leads toward complete and radical overthrow of the capitalist class.”

  3. 1969: UCLA of Santa Cruz tried to fire her illegally for her affiliation to the communist party.

  4. 1970: Davis is arrested for a connection to the Soledad Brothers and the conspiracy of helping the kidnapping and murder of a guard. Sparking a worldwide protest and political campaign for her freedom.

  5. 1981: She is acquitted of her charges about 8 years earlier and writes a book titled “Women, Race and Class.”

  6. 1983: Angela seem to be on a streak of presenting the world with books about gender equality. She then drops a book titled “Femmes, race et classe.” Which I have inferred, from her trip to Paris back in the 1960s, she learned and titled the book in French. I question if it is in actual French although.

  7. 1985: It begins to seem like every 2 or so years Ms. Davis publishes another beautiful book about her analysis on gender, race and culture in America + the entire world. This time she produces a text called “Violence Against Women And The Ongoing Challenge To Racism.”

  8. 1989: Davis continues her flow of writing books by publishing “Women, Culture and Politics.”

  9. 2006: Being that Davis has been an activist for gender, race and culture it’s not surprising that she dedicated one book to specifically children of color. To input that it is a girls’ children of color book titled “Prinsetta.” It details how to deal with prejudice, low-self esteem and even teasing, according to Google Books.

  10. 2012: Angela Davis speaks in an interview about gender, equality and racism at the Hotel Metropole Brussels on May, 15th 2012.

Advanced Essay #4: A Comparison of Old and New American Militarism

​My goals for this paper was to reflect on the ideas of how America focuses on only winning wars and conflicts. Without thinking about the detrimental factors that can happen or continue to evolve through the action of militarism and violence. I think that this project was very well organized beginning with finding an image that could help lead me into the development of my paper. Honestly, I feel like it has helped me stay on focus also with my ideas and answering my essential questions. If I could change anything about this paper it would be to find possibly more sources and extent the word count.

The sound of prideful theme music fills speakers with trumpets, violins and other angelic instruments. You could picture a group of soldiers running or an American Flag nevertheless the real image was a fast-paced selection of previous wars that America intervened in. The commercial connects to a theme of strength, nationalism and militarism. Such as the image that I found that shows the prominent girl running in Vietnam on June 8, 1972 with no clothes. Surrounding her are other people from her country. Yet, in the far back there are soldiers just walking along guiding them from the rubble not even trying to help them. The young girl who is named Phan Thị Kim Phúc, is looking for faces that she might know or even her own parents. Running and crying pouring out all things she felt from her inside, out onto her scabrous skin. The image is split, to a top and bottom. The top image headline reads“Oh My God, Somebody Do Something!” Her mouth is open as she screams with her minuscule voice for help. In spite of her being the “enemy” she is also a small weak girl, confused and lost she gets the littlest amount of help--censor bars covering her developing breasts and genitals. In addition to the quote in the bottom of the second picture that reads “Ahhh… That’s Better.” Similar to the way we try to fix our problems here in America, with the smallest amount of effort unless it’s through militarism.

Continuing my research, I looked deeper into my picture and questioned why didn’t the soldiers help these people who were clearly struggling and looking for help? They are there to protect and serve, to be strong and also to take commands. The people who give the commands though, where are they and why don’t they tell the soldiers to aid when it is a crucial time. Considerably being that there was a major bombing, the goal was to kill. However, in some human error of course not everyone died so there were survivors. They are killing them without using their guns, letting them run in circles among 90+ degree weather after a napalm bombing. The natives are carrying their family members with bullet holes piercing their flesh as the soldiers casually walk and talk about the number of friends they lost while at this war. The number of U.S. soldiers who died in service to the number of Vietnamese casualties are in a large juxtaposition. The U.S. suffered a loss of 58,200 total to the total number of 882,000 Vietnamese deaths (Including adult male and female war causalities--15 years of age and older, plus 84,000* war deaths in children--under 15.) The only worries that the soldiers have are if they are going to die and how do they win this war. Primarily is America going to win if they sacrifice their life or would it be better to take someone else's.

In which ways are we wired in a mindset of militarism, to be the one and only way to obtain a victory? Specifically focusing through war, violence and militarism. A book titled The New American Militarism by Andrew J. Bacevich states in the Introduction on page 1, “Today as never before in their history Americans are enthralled with military power.”  Reviewing American History, particularly the wars and interventionists we were apart of, there's a common theme of countries wanting to be our friend. Generally for support and help but we are also a great ally for our powerful and brave military. Connecting specifically to WWII, we weren’t apart of the problem so we shouldn't of been in the war. Yet, because we are this “great, brave and powerful” country, other smaller countries want to be our friend. So therefore we put ourselves in the forefront of the problem, just for an alliance. Similar to a Pro-Imperialist political document that we reviewed in U.S. History class week from Judge, 1899. The image shows a progress of Uncle Sam in 6 forms with small captions and years listed underneath his feet. Starting at a miniscule baby up to an overweight man stretching from 1788-1899. In the last form he is holding a figure made out to image the U.S.S. Maine under his arm and smokes a cigar as he looks to the outstretched arms of foreign countries. The names of each country resides on the arm cuff reading, Russia, Germany and England. Analytically arguing that we kill thousands of others and our own troops just to fight for resources like oil or tobacco and alliances. There are more important things that we could force our energy into, such as fighting for all countries to become less violent. Yet, the fish rots from the head and in this scenario, America isn’t leading in a positive way so it’s difficult to suggest that we all become non-violent. However, we aren’t doing anything other than putting ourselves in a difficult position.

So in which ways could or can militarism steer us towards a better future for our country, if it even can? Quoted from Michael Abtello, a rifleman in the Afghanistan war, who was interviewed for a document by PBS: Mortal Wounds of War, “I’ve lost more friends to suicides then I did in combat.” Mr. Abtello was in the forefront of the war, in addition to joining directly after the falling of the Twin Towers. In other words he joined after a time that our country was in dire need for pawns to play on a battlefield under a muddy fog, not knowing who the real enemy was. It was a dangerous time and just as in previous wars we fought we thought that this ambush into the middle east was going to help us get a victory.


Thinking back about our history in wars or conflicts from the Vietnam War, the Afghan War or to the Spanish-American War it seemed as if we tried to solve all of them by lugging out each one until we reach another conflict. Expanding on the Spanish-American War, we shipped out a boat (The U.S.S. Maine) to Cuba and it somehow was blown up. Causing us to take up our problems with Spain through smaller colonies such as the Philippines and Cuba. President Mckinley signed a joint resolution for war with Spain on April 19, 1898 and troops were deployed by May 25th. The war was proclaimed a victory by then President Theodore Roosevelt. Yet, according the timeline document on The United States in the Philippines, guerrilla warfare was persistent until 1915. This totalled of 16 years that we stayed at war, after a declared victory and the payoff from Spain though the Treaty of Paris of $20 million for the Philippines on December 10, 1899. Even researching about a war from over 100 years ago there’s the same theme of America joining conflicts that we had nothing to do with and/or creating problems.

Focusing back on my main questions:

(1) In which ways are we wired in a mindset of militarism being the one and only way to obtain a victory, specifically through war, violence and militarism

(2) In which ways has or can militarism steer us towards a better future for our country, if it even can.  

I think we are wired in a mindset of militarism being the primary way to obtain a victory from our youngest ages. Examples reside in every average middle-class American home, technology. Whether it is a game (Call of Duty, Modern Warfare) , a computer--social media or even more basic games that wrap around your imagination (playing toy army). Which can develop in the mind that accessing high levels of violence is normal or okay because it’s an idea that’s been with every American since they were born. For the children born in 2000, they’ve technically been at war all of their life (beginning with the War on Terror in Afghanistan evolving to Iraq, Yemen, now Syria and etc.) Therefore, I do not think that militarism can steer us towards a better future for our country. We are still dealing with conflicts from the mid and late 90s, so I question how are we going to move into the 22nd Century if we are still stuck in the 20th. As a country we have advanced through medicine, technology, science and societal barriers but we can’t proceed to a lifestyle of isolationism, peace and nonviolence. In conclusion, quoted from Mike Felker during our class Veteran Panel, “‘If you don't shoot us, we won’t shoot you’. So we said ‘heck why not. Didn’t see the point in the war and all anyway’. ” America could simply follow the pre-kindergarten rule that entails to treat others how we would want to be treated.

Identity and Belonging Podcast

My goal was to interview my mother who has an extensive background connecting to my theme of the assignment. “...being an African-American female in today’s society is challenging. There are so many expectations you are meant to uphold, foremost as you carry yourself can be a large factor in how you thrive in society. Today there are so many ways an African-American woman can be portrayed through so many different lens’.” There were so many ways that I could’ve made my piece flow, such as with one whole story or with multiple pieces. I chose to have multiple pieces strategically put together to describe a point that african-american women are more than just a stereotype. In my footage that I polished and finalize, I could connect to all requirements of the podcast (dramatic arc, story and background music).

As I worked on this project, I choose to take a different step during the process. I wrote my log and took away footage to shorten it and “make things easier for myself.” I think that it worked fairly effectively. There were some technical difficulties when I put some parts together. In addition to my final piece, there was a large spike in the sound during my first narration. I struggled with fixing it. Also limiting background noise in my house was a bit difficult because a part of our house was being constructed during the time I recorded. However, overall I think that my final piece is polished and great, despite the tech difficulties.

Advanced Essay #3: Identity & Belonging at SLA

Introduction:

My larger idea in this paper was to develop ideas about how I felt in my school community. My objective in writing this paper was to come to an understanding of where my place was in SLA and if I truly belonged there. I never thought about my identity in school or anywhere really. So exploring along this topics with 3 specific questions for investigation; I think I found a great conclusion.

Final Paper:

I’ve always felt like a small flower transitioning to blossom but I never felt like I was able to blossom as fast as the other flowers. My experiences at different schools have challenged me to either become creative or more constructive. Starting in a montessori for 1st-3rd then transiting into a private school from 4th-8th, I was open to creativity and then slightly told to part from it. The structure of a more strict environment had a toll on me; I felt restricted. Then my first year of high school came and it was different than what I thought it would be. I was used to seeing faces like mine or little to the spectrum of diversity. Transitioning to a community where all general ethnicities were represented was fairly new to me. However, it wasn’t shocking because I understood that the world wasn’t just white and black. Nevertheless just Asian or Latino. It reminded me of a quote by Ani DiFranco “I know there is strength in the differences between us. I know there is comfort, where we overlap.” Yet, based off what I saw from other kids I instantly began to think that I didn’t belong there. I didn’t feel limited to only associating with kids that looked like me but I noticed that I spent less time with those who didn’t. I didn’t open my boundaries or experience new cultures right away because I was scared that I had change who I was.

When I arrived, I felt like there was only a connection because my brother was an alum. I let my past experiences construct my idea of who I should be and where I belonged. My connection to this community didn’t feel like it was genuine, as if I wasn’t here for myself. I knew it would look good for my college applications and sound nice from word-of-mouth to say, “I’m a student at a Philadelphia magnet school called Science Leadership Academy located downtown.” It sounds so sophisticated from the full lips of a black girl. Another girl looked at from the world as loud, rude or aggressive and labeled. I didn’t want to fit in this stereotype so I finally developed my own reason for coming to SLA: To make the standards of a black teenager from the city less cliche-ridden but instead a head turner. Before achieving this I had to tackle the challenges that came with it. So I began to construct my mind in the likeness that in order to achieve success, I must form an identity that belongs here.

From the beginning of this journey all I could feel was intimidation. Trying to associate with a few kids who I might usually see during passing time that hold the door for me. Even the girl in the bathroom who is putting on the same mascara as me by coincidence. Besides the small conversations that started, I didn’t feel like I spoke “SLA’s language.” As if there was heavy dialect that only some could pull off by being shrewd, sarcastic and nevertheless having a love for satire. Yet, I just couldn’t pronounce it or understand it. All my ears heard were the long formulas that seemed to have been pulled from memories like flash cards. While all I saw was the intense ability to solve quadratic functions under 3 minutes. The speed amazed me and my desire to belong began to grow. I felt like I needed to change myself in order to fit into this community.

My peers had an advanced large vocabulary, such as verisimilitude. Compared to my average choice of realism, granted it did mean the same thing but what I thought mattered was the amount of letters in the word.  My mindset was that if I changed myself I automatically didn’t have to identity as the black girl trying the defy the odds of a stereotype or the one conforming to it. Instead I wouldn’t be in that category at all so I could make myself belong somewhere else. Yet, I didn’t know what belonging should even feel like; just having friends? Being “smarter”?  Solving problems and answering questions quickly? Quoted from the book titled The Great Gatsby, “I was within and without, simultaneously enchanted and repelled by the inexhaustible variety of life.” (Chapter 2)  In this community, the only way that I could feel less intimidated but instead inspiring to grow to survive was to relate to my peers.

          Some of my peers I found a connection with also said that they didn’t know if they belonged here. By the time I finally began to understand this all better, I was entering 11th grade. Truthfully, when I was writing this paper. I’ve thought about how different ways to develop the idea of belonging relates to myself. In a result, if we are all so different and the only similarity we have is being different, what is belonging? I don’t think that belonging exists, but nobody really belongs. We all rely on each other to accept one another, and since we make up the community it shouldn’t be conformed to a standard. Yet, I do think identity and self-identity does exist. In addition, it takes courage to not conform to standards so you can really think hard about who you are. I still can’t confidently say that I know who I am; barely what I even like. Plus it takes time to identify yourself.

So I am very comfortable in the idea of not knowing myself yet. Thus, beginning a part of myself in devotion to further question who I am and where I belong.  So far, I know that I could beat the label of a black teenage girl in our society without conforming to an code-switching identity. While also knowing that I belong at SLA with my own ideas, vocabulary list and achievements all fit enough to be attributed. In conclusion, I don’t know much else about myself but I’m willing to learn and experience more to let my true identity blossom.

Feminist Film Review: Legally Blonde 2

  2. Background: This movie is about Elle Woods who goes to Washington to help pass a bill. She meets a friend that helps her out by the name of Victoria but she was playing behind her back; not supporting her bill as she said that she was. Elle finds a true friend in Grace who helped her to find the truth about Victoria.

  3. Meeting Bechdel or Mako Mori Test: This movie meets the requirements of both the tests however I would consider it to meet more standards of the Bechdel test. It meets the requirements of fiction, two women talking about things other than men and sometimes names are added. However the names are added as much as what could be considered. My rating for the movie under the Bechdel test is about a 3.5 out of 5.

  4. If I was to create my own anti-gender bias film test I would call it: WORM (Women Origin Roles’ Matter). The criteria to meet this test would consider

    1. At least two female characters; One of a considerable minority ethnicity

    2. Not beginning the movie because of a failed relationship (boyfriend/girlfriend, marriage resulting in divorce) or sparking the movie for finding love.

    3. Not supporting a man’s story

  5. Writing a review using my own anti-gender bias film test, in other words using the WORM test I would rate Legally blondes at a 4 out of 5. This is because the movie supports the requirements for having at more than 2 female characters and one is a minority. Nevertheless at a high position job on Washington which isn’t portrayed very often in television or movies. So that stands out a lot. In addition, the main character was engaged but she left her husband to go to a different state for her own beliefs. She didn’t beg him to come nor have a hard time because she was following her own story not his.

Her Era Poem: The Interview With My Mom

My mom is Myracherisse, born to Peggy King. In Philadelphia, with 2 brothers and one sister. She’s the baby of the family and was born in the 60s. Sagittarius is her zodiac and she always felt a bit of a drawback.

Being an African-American female, her life was never a fairytale. The impact of race always brought her into a debate but being a girl she felt like it was necessary to always have a ponytail.

Wearing light colors and skirts never could she ever go and play in the dirt. Keeping a job was something she said was difficult so she tried to stay biblical.

The same could apply for education, hand and hand it was highly complicated. Her opinion on treatment between genders aren’t like my generation. She thinks it’s so much unnecessary, extra complication.

Her views are common old stereotypes but I guess that’s because they never went out of the box. She’s understanding and still insightful.

She just doesn't know anything about these titles. The definitions of gender and sex and how they are more in-depth. All she knows is boy and girl -- nothing less. Nothing more until I taught her about them, them their and theirs. Her eyes opened wide as if she saw THE light.

She said okay that should be in a book, I shook my head and agreed with a look.

Advance Essay #2: Code Switching In A Dominant Culture Capital

​Introduction Paragraph:
In this paper, I tried to focus on the skills of perspective, one moment in time and making sure there was valuable. A part that I am very proud of is my thesis statement and the points I tried to argue. Through the scene of memory I tried to look deeply into my past and think about how I felt and some of the questions I had developed at that time. As for a writer, I plan to grow in the areas of condensing my writing. Sometimes, I feel like I don't write enough or I write too much. Especially when it comes to detail, I don't feel like I access the areas in which the reader can real see or feel the action happening. 

My Paper: 

When I was about 11 or 12 I thought my brother was two different people.  At church, his friends were all African-American and he appeared to be more loose, funny and alive. Someone once made a joke that went like “Knock knock.” Then he said, “It’s open!” We all laughed for about 2 minutes under our breaths before an older lady with a large white hat would hit one of us. That made everyone instantly be quiet. While at his robotics events that my family and I would attend it was like he was a queen’s guard. His actions in this environment were much more remote. I had assumed it was because this is how you were suppose to act in a more professional setting. It was odd but I could tell he wasn’t the only one around me that switched, but my mother also did. For example, depending on who called her she would answer the phone differently. Either she would change her voice or say her full name “Hello it’s Myracherisse Holland.”

I asked them both why do they change when they talk to certain people. My mother told me “You have to act on their level in order to fit in.” Then my brother said that that’s why he’s having a hard time deciding between attending a Private White Institution or Historically Black College/University. Attending a HBCU would include being around people that understand some of the experiences of being an African-American male in society. While also not getting all the opportunities that could be open to him if he attended a PWI. However, it would be a constant trial of trying to relate to everyone else and fit in.

Which made me question, what factors determine if ‘code switching’ should be used? In what type of environments insists for you to ‘code switch’?  Also is it necessary? According to my family members it’s necessary in order to reach for better positions in the workforce that most African-Americans don’t achieve. Such as a CEO over a Fortune 500 company, high ranked positions under an office environment or etc.    


I tugged at my feelings about this because a part of me did agree that there were certain situations that you may have to change yourself. Such as showing you that you are the best candidate for the position in a group interview. A well-known statement in other words for this fraudulence is used the statement ‘fake it til’ you make it” Which implies that impersonating who you are until you achieve a good opportunity, is the way to get what you want. This idea can definitely have an impact on who you think you are or where you think you belong.

Not too long after the conversation with my mom and brother, I noticed that I also have some of the same code switching tendencies. For example some of my peers have even called me an ‘Oreo.’ The reason was because I am an African-American and a majority of African-Americans speak using a vernacular. Coinciding with the idea of speaking proper English correlates to being white. Although we call America a melting pot, things such as speaking articulately or dressing nicely correlates to being white?


As for my brother, he did go to what would be considered a white institution although it is a public university. A source from Penn admissions and university statistics state, “...have a majority rate of 69.9% white students compared to a 6.9% of African-Americans” ("Admission and University Statistics." He believed that choosing Penn State over Tuskegee would provide better internships and a higher chance of getting a job after college. While a study by Young Invincibles states that “The findings aren’t incredibly surprising, considering that black millennials are more than two times more likely to face unemployment than their white counterparts, at 16.6 percent compared to 7.1 percent.” (Cadet, Danielle. My overall message was to display the factors of code switching and how it can impact your future under a dominant culture capital.  By looking at the statistics and experiences, I drew an inference that, many African-Americans have a much harder time getting a job or internship because they aren’t equipped with the same opportunities to better their future as white-americans. Whom can achieve job experience or an internship more easily because employers are willing to hire them for their connections and references to better the company’s opportunities. Now making it a mainstream societal concept to hire white-americans over African-Americans.

Returning to my brother’s choice between a PWI or HBCU, which both have their pros and cons. Primarily attending a PWI provides better chances of getting a well-known company to intern with. As a con would be the difficulty of finding a friend who might be like you, in the instance of experience. In contrast to attending a HBCU where a pro would be being around people you can relate to some cultural experiences. In addition to connecting with more businesses owned by African-Americans. While a con would be losing more opportunities to join more selective programs owned by a dominant culture capital environment. As for my brother, his opportunities depend on how much and how hard he’s worked since he attended Penn State.

So in a real-life example, his ability to code switch can advance his chance entering a more selective program or internship. Yet, at the same time there will always be a chance that there’s a white-american looking at the same program who could obtain/attain it. Because we follow a dominant capital cultural system, where white-americans have a higher percentage of receiving a position than African-Americans.

Advanced Essay#1: The Larger Idea on Relationships

​My goals with this paper was to show that  that what you attribute to a relationship should be more than just a title and occasional conversations. Relationships should be cherished just as the memories you make are. With this goal in mind, I believe that I did well on my whole paper overall. I found my essential idea and enlarged it to what the foundation of relationships are. In addition, to how they should mean more of a deeper connection to the other person than just words. I don't think I would want to improve anything. This is the first English 3 piece that I have published this school year and I feel very proud about it.

It was the evening before my mother’s surgery and I had just got home from a hard day of volleyball, school and homework. Entering into my house I first spotted the lime green walls popping out at my eyes with its clean white border assets.  Then on the largest wall in the room, on the left is my favorite painting in the whole home. Placed delicately in a white, 8x11 picture frame is an African-American mother and daughter. They are sitting on a oak hardwood living room floor. The child sits in a pure white leotard in contrast to her mother’s much darker and rich burgundy v-neck leotard. Neither of them are wearing dance tights. They even have one incurably small fragment of their hair in the same spot that is short. It curls over just enough on the mother to touch her forehead. My mother was sitting underneath it on the largest of our 3-piece chocolate furniture set. With her black hair pulled back slickly into a ponytail, and a black tracksuit on she called me over.

“Hey, how was your day?”

“Pretty tiring but I’ll be alright. ” I replied. Then my eyes rolled their way up to the painting above her head and I smiled.


Whenever I see it, I instantly think of myself and my mom. As if I was looking straight into a puddle and saw my reflection. It reminds me of us because the two in the photo provides an instant story to your eyes. Appealing at your senses, showing you to have integrity, to be strong and providing a much deeper connection into their relationship than what small words and sentences could provide. Its description is deep but a picture is worth more than a thousand words. In my case, this picture to me was worth more than just words but it truly gave me the sense of what a relationship should be about. I sat down and listened to my mom talk about her day. Yet, running hastily in my thoughts were questions like

“What key components attribute to a healthy relationship and strong bond?”

I answered that question with the simple thought of how having similarities and common interests lead to connections. The vitality of it though it how it’s delivered--communication. Whether it’s father to son, boyfriend to girlfriend or mother to daughter. Filling in the blank scenario, I used my mom and I. Her eyelids has the same almond-hooded shaped as mine, with dark brown eyes to compliment the fold of brown skin above the socket line. We even smile with the curves of our lips making a similar up parabola shape.  With her round face she would draw a smile with her pearly whites and then give me a large warm hug.

Our relationship is like a key and lock. Our bond is close enough some would consider not only do we look like twins, with our similar eye and lip features, but we act like them too. She’s my best friend, finishing my sentences and knowing spectacle of a detail about myself. Supposedly because I am, nonetheless her daughter but our relationship was more than an overbearing mama bear and chubby cub. Hard situations can make or break people, I was once told. So when I was told on our dark-brown sofa that starry evening about her diagnosis with stage zero cancer, I was terrified. My body felt paralyzed for seconds. Minutes flew by and she still was talking, using descriptive words and providing facts but my mind had muted her tongue. It was like being in front of a television with open ears yet there was no sound. Images appear on the screen and my eyes are open just reading the subtitles. My tear ducts filled with buckets of salty tears ready to stream down my fat cheeks. The first tear was for strength. Such as the woman in the picture, I knew my mother was strong. Her bare feet also touched the ground such as the painting, clenching on to the dark green berber carpet. She couldn’t bear to tell me that no more than I could hear it. My finger lingered over her hair. Touching the smallest fragment that curved over onto her forehead, homogeneously to the picture above the crown of our heads.


I knew she was strong but when she went into surgery a first time I was panicking. Praying constantly to God, I was reassured that she would be fine and she was. Yet not all of this black heavy mass was removed so she chose to have breast reconstruction. I know in my heart that mom is strong like the barefoot woman in the painting on my vivid green living room wall. While, this memory taught me that what you attribute to a relationship should be more than just a title and occasional conversations. Instead, It should have a sensational euphoria no matter what the situation is, but who it’s connected with. This moment happened like lightning struck the evening sky just as I looked up at it. Rather it would be a  sight that I would see into the sky even after it was gone.

Climate Change Monologue

In this unit we have studied, learned and reviewed the impact of climate change, equality from more developed countries to third-world countries and the challenges they can cause. Before we began this unit I knew about climate change but I didn't care much for it. Nor did I care about how it will effect our future because I was aware that some major worldwide outbreak or etc. could possibly end our humanity as a whole. Once I began to learn more about it I noticed that there was a much bigger problem and it also impacts others and not just myself. Watching videos from girls my age and seeing how they have to live on a daily made me really see how different we are. In addition to how different our lifestyles are. Leading me towards my goal in my monologues, no matter your age you can have a opinion on our world and how we handle it. However, it's how we handle it to better or worsen our future that matters. With this goal I tried to capture the readers' attention from writing in 2 different age groups and also even from an animals perspective, because they matter too! Having an open-mindset to different things can lead you to a new perspective in life and how you hope for your future to prosper as. 

Monologue #1​:

-Charlie; China (Smog/Air Pollution)

(A 12 year old boy in a hospital Shanghai is clutching onto, half of what would’ve been, a small teddy bear drenched in tears)

There wasn’t much of nothing left of Barry. I see a reflection of this* bear in our humanity, in our future. Not only my people but everybody. Everybody can slowly but surely deteriorate. There is no way we can survive as a humanity if we are killing each other with violence but also within the air we, at least try to breathe. I have cancer. Lung Cancer to be exact. Well Susan, there’s no way around that. Okay well maybe I can change the ramifications of my answer you suggest.  I think that we can begin to show awareness you know. Listen to the information being said to us. Okay so you don’t seem to be listening. There is a problem in our world. It began with us so it will end with us. I know I’m only 12 and dying but I know a thing or two about our world and how we treat it. This air was semi-clean before we put pollutants and toxics everywhere and into everything. Compressing it and spacing it into the beautiful thing called air. (Coughs) Do you know how it feels to be unable to breathe...no. Hold your breathe for 10 seconds. Okay now add 10 more. You passed? Well keep on doing the math. There will come a point where you will become numb. That’s your lungs not working. Your body is reacting. What you felt is what I felt walking to school that morning. I just thought maybe my mask was too tight. The small strands of thread were apart of this system of more threads and they got together and planned on taking me out. Wait, or maybe that was just our current fossil fuel leaders adding more pollutants in the already present and blinding fog. You're looking at me. Why with such amazement? A young boy can take on the attitude of a man but his actions matter more than just his words or small emotions towards a situation. I was raised with that quote in my home. I knew about global warming from my parents introducing it to me however it wasn’t as bad then as it is now. It has grown 40% from Human society.What are my goals for the future?... I mean well. I’m not sure exactly. I just know that we really need to save the systems that make the earth compatible with humans. How are those goals? Anything you put your mind and motivate yourself towards can become a goal. (Coughs) Final words? “Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.” -Frederick Douglass.


Monologue #2:

-John McCormick - Chicago, Illinois (greenhouse effect)


(A slim around 5’7 man is meeting his wife and daughter at a eco-friendly restaurant until they come he is in the foyer on the phone with his assistant.)

Monica, I’ll call you back.. No, no, she’s calling me again. Yes! I said that I wasn’t alone. Well okay I’ll see you in the morning. Oh yea, M? Just uh make sure you take a list of all my appointments. Yea thanks. (Walks towards table) Hello, beautiful number 1 and beautiful number 2. I would give you two hugs but I smell like gas. Why do you look so angry Amy? My job.. Is there a problem you have with my job? Oh so there is. Well you minus well take that up with the CEO. Haha and it seems to be that he has an open appointment to meet with you right now. Yes now. At this very second sweetheart. That’s why we are here. I got promoted! Thank you and thank - why do you still have an attitude missy? It’s more money. Money matters right? That’s how you eat. That phone that’s in your back pocket probably is paid to be turned on with these dollar bills in daddy’s pockets. How else do you think that it happens? No offense sweetie, but your mother? Women aren’t as equally great in political debates or discussions so how could they lead a city? A nation? A world? A company. It’s the little people that matter the most yes. So no I’m not saying you don’t matter. I’m saying that you don’t matter as importantly on a scale as - Oh yes a menu for three would be delightful. Ladies, drinks? Avoiding the topic of conversation? I would never. It’s simply that the waitress came over and asked about our order. Which really brings me back to my point, money. Everything has to deal with money in some type of way. Nothing comes free. Remember that. Our earth came free without pollutants in the air? that’s what you're saying. Now you know Daddy goes to a conference downtown every four years or so to discuss matter like this. Small belittling silly matters. It’s not silly? Oh but I believe you're wrong. It is very silly. The challenge for climate change is how we change it but it doesn't exist. There was period where the earth was too cold. You think people would’ve cried more about receiving hypothermia from touching a metal teaspoon but nope. (Smacks Air) You’ll are crying over a myth. Not only is it a myth but it’s a constant contradicting subject. All of those who are so quick to jump on another human about climate change you are also one of the few bystanders but more of contributing towards it as well!  But we can change that? Are you flipping serious?! Change doesn't happen because people click like on facebook but change happens from people like us. Not me. Like you? No. You drove here earlier. How Amy how? That’s a contribution. Those who don’t believe in it seem to have more understanding on why than those who choose to believe in this mess. It’s hard to perceive it as a threat if we are still alive. Right? So the message or goal here is not for you both to become hypocritical to the subject but to open your eyes and see that there is no way to go around it so you minus well join it.  You sound displeased but there is no way to control a natural thermostat. What’s that? Well that would  be Co2 and it is trapped, which is scientifically proven. For some of you who thinks it’s unfortunate, you just have to get off your high horses. Place your feet in the warming sand, under the blazing sun and every rising temperature level of this beautiful warming oven called earth.

Goodmorning, beautiful morning after a night full of rain. Everything is happy now. It's a better start and a celebration towards new beginnings after rainstorms. That's part of the reason why I move to this lovely city. I'm originated from El Salvador. However they weren't taking care of their trees and other natural sources to see the importance of it. Everything works as a system in the wild. One bigger animal ears a smaller animal and there's a chain. In addition to the system of our ecosystem. Trees give some of us shelter and even food. However lately, that hasn't mattered. We've went from adoring us to not even caring if we are extinct. Until exactly every single last one of us is gone there won't be much talk about "Saving our animals of the Amazon." We don't matter as much they’re fossil fuels or large corporations. However, this place is different, (Interrupted by the sounds of sawing wood) I wonder what that is. Wait! Woah! Sir you can’t do that. I live here as well as many other animals. I knew that this illiterate man couldn’t hear me because he had these big black upside nests on his ears. SIR! SIR! I’m telling you to stop this instant! I’ll just go up to him than. Looking from above I don’t see anything except my family falling apart. My community dying. Uh, you just don’t understand man. When do you guys ever understand. It’s about how we handle the problem! Since 2004 our forest has decreased 40%! That’s a la… this is large. The look of the forest from up here. The amazon is vast of trees and it’s our lungs of the world. This isn’t the time for changes! Lately all of our changes haven’t been working in the best of all ways. this world needs a change... For the better! Not a change that’s causing us to lose more animals or changes that’s killing each other. We have to be alive to change the future or else there will be no future.

La Casa de George Lopez

​Esta es la casa de George Lopez. Juegos en la television con su esposa, el hijo y la hija. Su casa esta en Hollywood, California. Hay más o menos cafes cerca de George's casa. Está lejos del Italiano Mercado. Su casa jardin es muy bontia. Porque hay el flor púrpura. Tambien hay un garaje con biblioteca en ya 3 planta de la casa.  George Lopez tambien tiene un much dinero en ya comprar la casa. La casa es un poquito general pequeño, pero mucho grande cocina.

Negative Space Reflection

Negative space is the space behind a object or person which will move your ideas to focus on the main point of the picture. I found negative space in my first cut out where there wasn't any construction paper. Secondly  there were spaces behind the drawn parts of my artwork. It helps an artist to see in negative space because they can determine what to draw more focus to and what not to. Also because it adds on to how to the focus of one item.

​1. What is one thing that your learned specifically that you did not know before?
a. One thing I learned specifically that I didn't know before was how to draw a door in perspective. It was very challenging since it was my first time learning how to draw it but however, I think that I did a nice job overall. 

2. How did leaning this thing make your drawings better?

a. Learning this made my drawings better because my door didn't look fake or like it was glue onto a wall. Unlike an actual door which comes out of the wall and has a border. This skill will also help me in my future drawings as well. 

3. If you did this assignment again, what would you do differently?

a. If I could redo this assignment I would change the wall I choose to draw. First off, because I think I could have went out of the box and tried something different. Secondly, Change how I drew the stools. I think they look quite fake and not up to my standards. 

4. What is your advice to someone who has never drawn a one point perspective drawing before?

a. My advice to someone who has never drawn in a one point perspective would be to follow you vanishing point because it is very helpful through each step. Secondly to measure evenly on both sides of your project. My last piece of advice would be to take your time and make mistakes so you can learn from them. 

5. What resource helped you the most and why?

a. I think my past projects we did in class helped me the most because it gave me the resources to look back and see step by step how to make various a vertical and horizontal lines turn into a 3-D room from perspective.

Mi famila es pequeño. Me llamo es Alicia. Soy baja y comcia. Yo le gusta nado, ir de compras con mis amigos y ir al cine. Yo encanta mi famila! Tengo que una bobo pero creativo famila. Vamos a nuevo casa, una futuro invernio. Mi mama se llama es Myra. Va a la peluquería cada semana. Ella es muy habladora. Se gusta lea y concina. Mi padre se llama es John. El encantas americano futbòl y baila. Tiene que lavar los platos por que el no les gusta lava platos. Mi padre tambien le gusta ver la tele y comer mucho! Tambien el es muy comico. Mi hermano se llama es David. El es muy diverdita y chevere. Sus encantas dibuja y hablar por telefono. Va trabajar en colegio pero tiene (?do i need "has in spanish here or no?) una trabajas. ¡Hola! Mi nombre es Alicia. Tengo catorce años. Soy estudiante de Science Leadership Academy. SLA es en Filadelfia. Está cerca de ciudad hall. Hay 425 estudiantes en SLA. Tenemos voleibol, baloncesto, frisbee, cheerleading y pista. Yo participo en cheerleading porque hay divertida nosotros participar activamente en. Es importante trabajar duro y prestar mucha atención. Es requerido y importante a tenemos que hablamos y leemos.

Unas mis clases son Matemáticas, Bioquimica, Inglés, Historia y Arte. Mi favorita clase es Español! Porque es facil, divertida, cantamos y bailamos por lo general. Sin embargo, no me gusta mucho Álgebra uno. Porque es muy difícil y La Señorita Thompson es algo difícil hablamos.   En Español tenemos que leemos y cantamos siempre. En álgebra tenemos que tomar apuntemos y leemos. Para tener éxito en Espanol es requerido trabajar duro y tomar apuntes. En Álgebra para tener éxito es importante prestar atención. 

La Señorita Manuel enseña Español uno y cuatro.  Ella le gusta cantar y bailar. Como si fuera poco ella es boba con su amigos. La Señorita Manuel’s cumpleaños es el diecisiete de Mayo. También ella clase es divertida y chevere! Mientras la profesora ella es cómica, fácil hablamos y amable. Además La Señorita Dunn es mi conjera. Su enseña Inglés y Sexo en Sociedad. La Señorita Dunn encantas pasar tiempo con la familia y amigos. Sin embargo ella es delgada y alta. 

SLA es pequeña pero chevere escuela. Le gusta el mezla de razas. También le gusta todo la actividades en SLA.  Lo que más me gusta de SLA son el professores. Ellos son muy chévere, deportista, creativo y inteligente. Professores no donde esta en SLA no son cómicos pero son muy aburrido.

Alicia Jones- Media Fluency | Tech Class Q2

Introductory for why I have this slide:

Alicia: Is a girl who actually doesn't know “what she likes” nor do I know the answer to  “why” to any question really. However, I do know or at least has an ideal of who she is. For starters, I don’t care how a person truly perceives “What they THINK I am like.” Only because I know what I truly am. As I refer to “What I am” I speak as in the things that I do. These things all make up parts of what I do as a human being, what I do as Alicia. I know of each decision I make and why but each and everyone of them will all have an affect on my life.

The Reason for my slide: My slide is eye-catching, I used big font for my letters, my slide has one point but it can draft off into different points. Lastly, I did use my contrast nicely and rule of thirds in a evenly set way. Black background : You see that my background  is all black and this is because I can be mean at times but when I am happy I can have the prettiest attitude ever. This connects to the bright pink letters of my name and how I used a spatial view between letters to have an emphasis on how my name is much more than just any name : A L I C I A. Although I can be a bit crazy I am truly a cool person. So this is why I have added the quote “This is who I am. Nobody said you had to like it.” - Miley Cyrus. In conclusion I am who I am. No matter what someone might think about me I am going to be myself regardless. Even if I do not know who I am yet, I still have quite a few time to find myself. Maybe then my background would be filled with beautiful pictures and so forth.



Media Fluency
I learned from my old Media Fluency project that I should make a cleaner heart, Make the spacing in my letters look even and put Miley Cyrus' name in a smaller pt. size. Through the positive criticism I received from my class mates I noticed that I should change certain things or the whole thing. So I decided to change the whole thing and still use contrast rules and rule of the thirds. My re-created version is taking all of the changes I was told to make and add more. If I couldve done anything different in the last version I would've probably re-thought about the sketchy heart and making the spaces in my name more even.

Home Network

   My home network's I.S.P. is powered by Verizon. From Verizon we were given 2 modems. The first modem is only connected to a desktop computer through an Ethernet cord. It has no wireless settings. Secondly, the second modem has both an Ethernet cord and a wireless setting. There are nine wireless pieces of technology being used in my household. However there are only 2 Ethernet wires. As I said before, the 1st cord is to the desktop. While the second modem and wire is to my SmartTv in my basement.
