Candace Blocker Capstone

Posted by Candace Blocker in Capstone - Reddy on Friday, May 31, 2013 at 2:38 pm

My topic for this project is birth control pills and this fits into what I want to do in life because I want to be a nurse or work in a clinic and also stress the importance of birth control pills. By doing this project I hope to learn about different birth control pills and how they can affect and impact each person. This project will enable me to be able to raise awareness and the seriousness of birth control pills. By the end of this project I want to be able to open people’s eyes to birth control and the seriousness of them. The way I am going about this project is to possibly try to shadow someone who works with birth control pills and possibly interview people who are on birth control and the kind of birth control pills that they take. I was also considering doing an anonymous survey and ask who is sexually active, are they on birth control, and what kind of birth control pill they take. The reason I chose to focus on this topic was because I feel as though people don’t take birth control as serious as they should. Also, it’s so much more to sex than just a good time.

Candace Blocker Mini Project (Rihanna)

Posted by Candace Blocker in Sexuality and Society in Literature - Dunn on Sunday, December 9, 2012 at 9:48 pm

The themes I used for this was Forgiveness and Acceptance, Private vs. Public self, and a little of Judgement - societal + individual. The way I went about presenting this was I did a video montage to music and a photo essay combined. I tried to incorporate the color red in a lot of the pictures to show a connection between The Scarlett Letter. During the beginning with the pictures I used a song called “Half Of Me” by Rihanna and it explains how she only shows the sides she wants to show, but not everyone gets to see all of her which is where the Private Vs. Public self comes in. I tried to combine her private and public life by putting a mix between her more calm family photos and then some pictures of her being a little more "wild". Then during the video sequence my first video of Rihanna talked about how she felt about Chris Brown after he physically abused her and how she felt and handled it, but also, how she went back and in the second video she talks about how she was more concerned about him, how he was doing and how she was more concerned about how the public would judge him. In those two videos the themes Forgiveness and Acceptance and Judgement - societal + individual both tied in and that’s why I had to use that last theme so that everything would make sense. I automatically knew who I wanted to focus this on as soon as I knew what our project was on. The process was fairly easy because i already knew the direction I wanted to take this in because of my love for Rihanna I didn’t have a problem coming up with my pictures and videos. The hardest part was trying to make sure it was clear to everyone and not just me. Another problem I ran into was how I could show the themes I used without making it seem like everything was all over the place. I tried to make it as clear and understandable for my audience as possible. The one thing I would change is how clear my videos came out because for some reason they seemed to be a little blurry on my laptop. I’m glad that I worked alone on this project alone because I got to do things my way without asking someone else if they wanted to do this or do that but instead I just got to do what I truly wanted and what I knew I could make into a great project. If I could do this whole thing over again I wouldn’t change anything. I enjoyed doing this project so much!

Patriot Act

Posted by Candace Blocker in American Government - Herman on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at 6:16 pm

I feel as though we should keep the Patriot Act because it ensures the safety of everyone. As shown in this quote. “As we lose some of our security, it is natural and proper for government to increase surveillance and other security measures..” This quote is valid because the less security we have the more the government will need to step in and take control. As many people don’t know their are restrictions and strict safeguards to the Patriot Act such as you must show proof as to why you suspect someone is a terrorist and you also must get a judge’s permission before tapping into anyones phone.  The F.B.I is flawed as well as everything else, nothing is perfect. Social media and technology has become so advanced that nothing is truly private. You don’t need the Patriot Act to have your privacy violated when you have social networks. The Patriot Act isn’t made to be in everyone’s personal life, instead it is to ensure that everyone is protected from terrorist and other threats to life. In conclusion, keeping the Patriot Act would be very beneficial and productive in the long run.

Enemy Of The State

Posted by Candace Blocker in American Government - Herman on Thursday, September 13, 2012 at 1:21 pm
-how the government is portrayed in the film

to me they're portrayed as being corrupt, untrustworthy.

-how individual citizens' privacy is respected

It wasn't respected at all. They had camera's throughout his house and clothing. It was no privacy and no respect.

-your opinion on level of access the govt should have to your personal info

I feel as though because of 9/11 I know understand why government has so much information. But it should be a limit on how much they can access and view.

-when individual freedoms can/should be restricted for safety of community

When can it? I don't think it will ever be able to. Because government wants to monitor just about every single thing and everywhere we travel.

9/11 Short Film

Posted by Candace Blocker in Digital Video -Senior - Herman on Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at 10:21 am
The one that made me feel the most was the second film about the man who lost his wife. This particular one made me feel the most because the music that was playing seemed to be reelecting how he his feeling and what he was going through. Then he would talk out loud as if he was talking to someone and he didn't seem to be the happiest. Also, the affects they used during the film made it a lot more interesting. Then, as the buildings fell it let the sun hit his plants which was a reminder of his wife and when the buildings fell the sun brought life to the plants which seemed to bring life to his wife. Then once he woke up and saw the sun, and what it did to the plants he was overcome with emotion. The one thing that stuck with me and the most and made me very emotional was when he was on his knees holding the plants and said "you should've been here to see this." I feel as though that was a perfect way to end that film.

Book Review for Impulse by Ellen Hopkins

Posted by Candace Blocker in English 3 - Rami on Thursday, June 7, 2012 at 8:22 am
Lately I've been reading the book Impulse by Ellen Hopkins. This book is one of the only books that can keep my attention. This book takes you into the minds of people that have negatively reacted from impulse. I love this book because it's blunt and doesn't hold back with anything. Ellen Hopkins makes the characters very realistic and their situations believable. I recommend this book to all. But, this book is not suitable for children under the age of 15.

here is the link incase it doesn't show at the bottom

  • My point of Divergence was for George W. Bush to never become president.
2. Al Gore would become president and instead of everything going downhill things would get better. Like the war wouldn't last as long as it did.

3. I liked that we got to change something. I thought that trying to make all of the events exact and have them make sense most challenging.

4. I never knew that George W. Bush did cocaine or got arrested for drunk driving.

5. It can change if things get better or worst.

6. I could've also included a video or something digital.

7. I would start it a lot earlier.

a. What went well?
We all worked very well together and all did an equal amount of work. I also like the pictures we chose and how we have little talking bubbles next to them.

b. What did not?
Putting everything together so it makes sense and the make it clear to the person who was reading it so they could understand it.

c. What would you do differently next time?
Next time I would want us to do things more timely and not rush things. And to make things a tad more colorful.

d. Specifically comment on the 10 tips for effective infographics.

Candace Blocker And Jakobi Howard NHD

Candace Blocker and Jakobi Howard
Topic: Women In The Navy

We chose this topic because we wanted to know how women got involved in the arm forces and what they had to go through to become involved. We conducted out research by going on google and asking people we knew that were apart of the movement and organizations that were taking place. We knew we wanted to do a video because it would be the best way to get our information across and clear with the topic we had. This project related to the NHD theme because we had to focus on the revolution that the women started when they wanted to join the navy, the reaction of America as a whole, and the reform of American when they finally decided to let the women join the arm forces.

Alien Takeover

Posted by Candace Blocker in English 3 - Rami on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 12:17 pm
Once upon a time, in a far away land there was a place. A place that only a select few knew about and only a select few could join. But no this was not just any ordinary place, no this was a place full of workers... alien workers. You wouldn’t imagine how many of them walk among us... the “normals” We try time and time again to make things equal but it never will be equal. One day I was curious... a little too curious and when all was quiet and it was dark I snuck in. All of the aliens were gone and probably taking off their faces... I break open a window and climb through trying to make as less noise as possible. It was dark and it was cold I guess they like this sort of thing. I walk around looking, hoping maybe to find some type of evidence to take back and show everyone I’m not as crazy as I may seem and that I’m actually telling the truth. As I’m walking through all I see are desks, cubicles and papers. It looks so normal but I know it’s a disguise I just know it. As I walk around I kick a box and a light turns on so I duck but not just any light... A flash light. A voice yells out “Hello! Who’s there? Come out.” I crawl, crawl as fast as I can but the light flashes on me and I know I’m doomed... *2 days earlier* “John stop with the nonsense ok! I’m sick of it.” Says my wife in a hushed angry tone. “I’m serious, baby if you just give me a chance to prove to you...” and she cuts me off “No John I said that’s enough! I’m sick of it. Everyday it’s something new and you come home late with a new excuse. I’m fed up” And she takes a long pause and begins again with her head hanging down “If things don’t change I’m gone.” The look in her eyes was intense and I knew she wasn’t kidding I knew things have gotten real, real soon. I made my way to the park to cool off and give Sarah some time to cool off as well. *The thoughts he’s currently thinking while walking around.* “How can I prove to everyone I’m not crazy and I actually am telling the truth? How oh how?” “I know just what to do I’ll go sneak in take a few pictures gather up some information and bring it back to everyone and show them I’m telling the truth.” I didn’t know what else to do, there was no other choice but that. I planned everything out once I got home, I could tell Sarah was still mad so I stayed out her path. I worked on my plan all day and all night. *The next morning* I finally went to sleep at about 3:45 in the morning and just woke back up at 2 in the afternoon. “So all you want to do it sleep huh?” says my wife as she walks in folding clothes. “Don’t start with me I’ve had a long night.” I respond then pause. “Why don’t you ever support me?” I get no response and she walks out. I know that today is the big day so I prepare myself. I walk past this place plenty of times plotting, planning. I know this is a big step. Later that night I pack my things kiss my wife goodbye. I make my way down and I break open a window and climb through trying to make as less noise as possible. The officer kicks the box I was hiding next to and yells “What are you doing here?” I’m frozen with fear. He picks me up by my collar and the last thing I remember is a blow to the face with his flashlight. When I wake back up I am tied to a chair surrounded by them…. The aliens. I’m dizzy and ask “Why am I here” and I plead “I’m sorry I’m sorry! I was just curious.” They respond and say “Don’t talk just listen. Now that you’re here and you have seen us there is no turning back from now on. You must now become one of us and never speak of this. You will work for us and live for us, you got yourself in this mess now you can’t get out of it.” They put a mask over my face and I was out like a light. Everything after that was a blur. When I woke up I was in a cubicle and everyone around me looked normal I thought it was a dream until I tried to leave and their was an invisible shield… I’m trapped.

Interview Q&A

Posted by Candace Blocker in American History - Laufenberg on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at 2:46 pm
Interviewee: Josina Blocker (My Mother)

1. Q: What motivates you to come out and vote?

A: What motivates me? The future of my child.

Q: What would you like to see changed in our political system?

A: Umm. I would like to see the bickering amongst parties I would like to see that become more partisanship  rather than bipartisanship

Q: Do you know why we vote on Tuesday?

A: Do you know why? Because I don’t.

Q: Do you know about the law that states prisoners not being able to vote? Do you agree or disagree with that and why?

A: I feel as though they only put this law through because of our president. I disagree with that law because if they are still considered US citizens and did their time they should be able to let their voice be heard just like any other US citizen.

Q: Did you learn about voting in school? If yes, did that impact your willingness to vote today?

A: No, I didn’t really learn about school that much it wasn’t a big topic back then and that was in the 80’s really. Voting to me is much different then what it used to be. Voting is more popular than it ever was before because of our black president.

Q: Are you always sure of who you are going to vote for when you walk into the booth?

     A: Yes I am.

Q: Do you vote in every election?

    A: Yes.

Immigration Visualization Project Reflection

Posted by Candace Blocker in American History - Laufenberg on Friday, September 23, 2011 at 10:04 am

Immigration Data on Prezi

http://prezi.com/pdbkhd6dovfn/immigration-data/

All of this didn't surprise me much because I already knew most of this happened. What I didn't know was all of that could've effected immigration at some point. Because of the way our economy and current job status is I feel as though the immigration rate is only going to slow back down and start to decrease if things don't start to get better. Immigrants come over for jobs and that's what we are currently lacking the most. We kind of decided on it by what was going to represent our data the best. To me, the most challenging part was trying to get the final visual done and how the longer you wait to start your visual the more stressful it becomes when you finally start it. If I had to do anything different I would use my time better and spend less time on trying to find so much information but work with what I have and then do my visual as such. But overall it turned out to be good.

This year was challenging yet very exciting and interesting. I’ve learned so much and have grown as a person in the process, from adjusting how to work with different people to learning how to be in a trial, I even became a poet. I never even knew what a monologue project was until I came here and had to write one myself. I learned how difficult it is to write an entire monologue it takes lots of time and effort it isn’t something you can just rush through. I learned how to make myself into another person and to see other people’s struggles and also their strengths. I’ve learned that I have other sides to me; I’m more than I appear.

My favorite project had to be the poetry unit. I liked this the most because it let me show my poetic side and I also got to expand my thinking way beyond what I normally would. I got to let people in and let them see my thoughts and my feelings and the way I view the world. And the feedback I got made me happy to know that people actually cared we’ve all grown into a little family who cares and respects one another.

Another unit I liked was the trial. Things got very intense but that was good because it showed that everyone was really engaged with what they were doing and the parts that everyone had to play. It shows a lot about human behavior and how when anyone is put in an intense situation they act on feelings and not actually think about what they really should do.

My final all time favorite unit was the prison unit. I never knew the crazy statistics that they had for prisons. I also never knew they had a book program for them. Because the media never showed the fact they wanted to read they would only show the fights, or the way the guards would beat on the prisoners. Never how they wanted to read or how they would make this beautiful art work! I was amazed to find out all this and now my views on prisons have changed so very much.

Finally, this will always be my favorite year because Mr. Block has become my favorite teacher. He's pushed us to our limits and broke us out of our shells and let us know it was ok to be ourselves there are people who have it worst than we do so appreciate everyday and our education. Before being in this class I never voiced my opinion because I didn’t want them getting shot down. But Mr. Block showed us it’s ok to voice them and it’s ok if they get shot down because even if they do you can still say that you tried instead of being quiet and not heard at all. I really love these classes both and will miss them dearly! Coming into this class I hated the thought of having back-to-back classes but they weren’t as bad as I thought they were actually my favorite classes and I can say that I learned the most from each class.

Spanish Project Q4

Posted by Candace Blocker in Spanish 2 - Gierke on Friday, June 10, 2011 at 1:27 pm
My project is a video story of my life from when I was younger up until now. I liked that I got to talk about my childhood and how I used to be. I would do a book instead.

For The Moment

Posted by Candace Blocker on Monday, April 11, 2011 at 12:28 pm
My project was about "Correctional Rape." And correctional rape is when guys rape females because they are lesbians and try to make them straight. So they beat, rape, burn, and molest them until they are straight. Sometimes this results in them dying or catching some type of disease.

For The Moment

Cast of characters:

Umee - Melinda’s girlfriend

Melinda - Victim

Melinda’s Mother

Doctor Suzie

Act 1, Scene 1

MELINDA

Hi my name is Melinda I’m 16, and I am a rape victim. It all started one day after school when I was walking home with Umee. Oh, she’s my girlfriend. Oh my god yes. I love her more than anything. Well anyway we were on our way back to my house to ya know study and stuff. And we always take this short cut and when we do she holds me really tight. Yes to protect me from those people. So the people were back there that day. 3 of them all dressed in huge T-shirts and chains and baggy, ugly, dirty jeans. They smelled horrible. I can’t remember. But they saw us holding hands and started yelling a bunch of evil hateful words. Once we started to walk faster they yelled louder “Watch your back bitch, I will kill you” We didn’t know at that point who they were talking to but we just ran. And once we finally reached my house I dropped to the floor and she held me. I always felt safe in her arms. She was strong. Because she played a lot of sports of course. She was more manly than I. I wore dresses while she was more into baggy jeans. And the next day she wasn’t coming to school I tried to avoid the ally way but I couldn’t I walked really fast and hummed softly to myself hoping they wouldn’t be there and once I reached the end I turned around and I see them sitting there just watching me with their hateful eyes. Yes, I was terrified. Once school was over I was hoping to see Umee but she never showed up. So there I was alone … once again. I had to take that walk alone, praying so hard that they wouldn’t see me. But I was wrong, they saw me. I tried to run, but they tackled me and that’s when it all began. I begged and pleaded for them to stop but they kept hitting me the more I begged so I shut up.

(Telling mom what happens as they sit down and have a talk after she see’s Melinda)

Act 1, Scene 2

MELINDA

I said no. So many times that my throat was pulsating. They told me that if I told anyone I was dead but I couldn’t keep this a secret anymore mom! I couldn’t tell you any sooner because I know you would judge me, like you are now. You told me so? What type of shit is that to say to your daughter? No mom I can’t take being your slave anymore! You’ve treated me this way since I was able to walk. I know you have. NO STOP TALKING IT’S MY TURN! Ma you don’t ever let me finish, but now oh now it’s my turn! I’ve waited on you hand and foot. But when I need you for comfort after I just got gang raped and beat and all you can say is I told you so! No fuck that! I’M LEAVING AND I’M NEVER COMING BACK! I’m moving in with Umee . Bye

(Packs her things and cries while her mom sits downstairs with a straight face)

(Once she gets to Umee’s house)

Act 1, Scene 3

UMEE

(Once she gets to Umee’s house)

Baby. I. Am. so. Sorry! Please please please forgive me! No no it’s not. It’s all my fault why the fuck would I make you go out there by yourself knowing that those people are trying to get you. I’m sorry, staying here? With me? I mean why? You have a home? I know you just got raped and I’m sorry. Don’t even be like that you know I want you here. It’s just that me and you living together will be trouble. A lot of trouble and I can’t handle it Melinda. Stop pulling away from me. I understand you’re really shaken up but if you stay here things won’t get any better. Only worst and you know that. Stop Melinda come back!

(Melinda runs off with tears streaming down her face and sleeps in a random cot the next morning she ends up in a hospital and talks to the doctor. When she see’s him she doesn’t panic there is actually a sigh of relief and she starts to talk to the doctor)

Act 1, Scene 4

MELINDA

Hey doc. Sorry I’m pacing I’m just sick and tired of no one caring! Sorry for breaking that. Matter fact I’m not sorry. I’m tired of being sorry all I did was say sorry as 3 huge men forced themselves inside me. Pregnant? Well …. They didn’t use a condom I don’t think. Didn’t feel it. I don’t remember what happened after a while. Why? Oh because they beat me until I was passed out. Yes, That’s why I keep my hood on. Take it off you say? *Starts shaking and take off hood* Yea, I thought I was going to die. I’m helpless. Can someone help me? No I’ve never been tested. I wouldn’t mind taking one. Well what happened was I have this girlfriend named Umee. Yes we’re sexually active. (The doctor stops her and says “ I know why they raped you, its called corrective rape and it only happens in South Africa” and she breaks down) Correct me? I don’t need correcting! I’m a good girl I don’t bother anyone and I’m nice to everyone even though everything around is falling apart as we know it! My mother basically hates me and my girlfriend won’t even let me live with her. When it’s her fault I’m in this mess right Oh yes it is her fault. Because I said so! If she had never ever left me to walk home none of this bullshit would have happened . … I’m so alone.

(They take Melinda to get a rapid AIDS, pregnancy and STD testing and wait about 20 mins … then the doctor calls her back)

Act 1, Scene 5

MELINDA

Hi doc. Sooooo what’s the results? (Long pause) AIDS? ….. And I’m pregnant? No no no no this isn’t real! This can’t be happening to me. Can we take this test again because maybe you mixed the results around with someone else. Wha … Wh … What do I do? I’m so helpless. I could never tell my mom about this. She already judges me about everything I do and this would just make her hate me even more. Is there a cure !!!!???!!!?!?!?!?!?!

Act 1, Scene 6

DOCTOR

Please calm down

(Doctor talking to Melinda as she places her hand on her knee)
