Chloë Epstein Capstone

Posted by Chloë Epstein in Capstone · Siswick/Kay · Wed on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at 6:28 pm
For my capstone, I setup an art opening exhibiting my own artwork. The exhibition specifically focused on illustration, cartoons, and diversity within characters I have created. I used only the artwork I had created in the past 2 years to keep it fresh and to show people what I had been creating during high school. I also created two new pieces during the process of this capstone. After I had made sure all my artwork was finished I had to organize the exhibition. This included finding a space, scheduling a time and date, getting catering/ food, framing my artwork, and setting up my exhibition. I also had to advertise my whole exhibition through social media and the advisory memo. Although, this sounds like a lot of work I did not do it alone. My mentor Andrés Castillo, my mom, and my friends from SLA all helped out. I think what I learned from my capstone is how much of a process hosting an art exhibition or event in general is. You have to work hard, be organized, and have a source of money. In general, you have to be prepared for any obstacle that might get in your way because chances are things aren't going to go completely as planned.

  1. Art Business

Bamberger, Alan. "Welcome to ArtBusiness.com." Art Business: Advisor, Consultant, Appraiser, Broker, News, Marketing. San Francisco Gallery Openings , 1998. Web. 31 Jan. 2017. http://www.artbusiness.com/index.html

This is a website I found that was created by Alan Bamberger, who is the author of The Art of Buying Art. The website goes into the importance of art galleries and the relationship between the artist and the gallery owner. It even gives you advice on how to start your own exhibit. This was one of the few credible websites I could find on art galleries because it was a website with no ads, and the creator actually seems legitimate. I wanted to find a credible source on putting on art shows and working with art galleries because this is the first time I’m doing it. I may have been to many galleries, but I’ve found there is a lot that goes into setting up an exhibit, so having this resource like this will inform me how to do so.

  1. Basic Anatomy for the Manga Artist

Sanmiguel, David. Art of drawing anatomy. New York: Sterling, 2008. Print.

This is another Manga style art book that I use a lot for my illustrations. The big difference between the two books is that this manga book actually acts as an anatomy book rather than just a how to book on a cartoon style. It shows the muscles and structures of the figures like they are actual people rather than just cartoons. I always thought it was interesting and necessary to see cartoons this way as a way to understand how they move or function. This is another book I want to use to specifically draw figures in my illustrations/ comics to see how their body should look or how it should be positioned in contrast to the rest of the picture.

  1. Fierce Women of Art

"Fierce Women of Art." PBS. PBS, 21 July 2016. Web. 31 Jan. 2017. http://www.pbs.org/video/2365797389/

This video was also created by PBS, but instead of interviews it’s a video on various controversial female artists. It specifically talks about how female artists are underrepresented and underappreciated rather than men who constantly have their work shown in art galleries and museums. This video was supposed to commemorate female artists who fought against different types of oppression through their artwork. I appreciated the video included women from different backgrounds and of different races. My artwork features a lot of “fierce” women in it, so I would like my exhibit to represent a theme of diversity in comics/illustration. I also connect to this video a lot, being a female artist and a feminist myself. I want to use videos like these as inspiration on what the “theme” or meaning of my exhibition will be.

  1. Fighting Like a Girl: Gendered Language in Superhero Comics

Davis, Rebecca . "Fighting Like a Girl: Gendered Language in Superhero Comics." Griffith University . Griffith Working Papers in Pragmatics and Intercultural Communication , 2013. Web. 3 Feb. 2017. https://www.griffith.edu.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0012/589458/Rebecca-Davis.pdf

This is a PDF I found on Google scholar about gendered language in superhero comics. This source differs the force from the rest of my sources, because it is more about language than art, but it still has to do with my artwork because it’s about gender and sexism. The sexist tropes I see through comics and all types of media is something I would like to challenge through my artwork and I would like to show specifically through this exhibit. I write comics and use text in my artwork, so it’s an aspect of my exhibition that I would like to know more about, especially when it deals with gender. I want to break stereotypes with both my illustrations and my writing, so having this access to this source would show me how.

  1. How to Draw Comic the Marvel Way

Lee, Stan, and John Buscema. How to draw comics the Marvel way. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1978. Print.

I was told to buy How to Draw Comic the Marvel Way as a tool for one of my summer art classes two years ago. It ended up being one of the most helpful and informative art books i’ve ever read, specifically when it comes to illustration and comic. It’s written by Stan Lee and Illustrated by Jack Kirby who are two of the most famous comic book writers and illustrators in the world, so I think it’s a very credible source because the authors are so experienced and talented. This book has taught so much about writing and drawing comics, and how much work goes into just creating one page. As an artist it’s always good to learn from the “old masters” and as an illustrator this is who learn from. I plan to use this book in order to illustrate comic book pages and specifically drawing pictures of people fighting because its main focus is superheros.

  1. Mastering Manga

Crilley, Mark . Mastering Manga . Cincinnati: Impact , 2012. Print.

Mastering Manga is another How-to book that has helped me a lot over the years. Manga/anime was one of the first places I started as an illustrator and as a result it’s style had a big impact on my artwork. You can see through my style how manga plays apart in it through the big eyes and exaggerated facial expressions. Even though my style has evolved a lot over the years, I still use this book as a character design and cartoon anatomy reference. It includes body types and proportions different from a regular anatomy book, and although I use both, this book definitely helps me as an illustrator. I will use this book for my illustrations as more of a reference for body types and different facial structures in cartoons.

  1. POP ART

Osterwold, Tilman. Pop art. Köln: Taschen, 1999. Print.

This is another book I own about a certain style and medium and art, but instead of comics it’s about Pop Art, which is a medium of art I may combine with my illustrations. One of the paintings i’m currently working on is going to use a pop art style featuring the characters I have created. Some of the artists in this book i’m even going to base my work off of (e.g. Roy Lichtenstein, Keith Haring). This book features tons of different artists work, and a detailed history of Pop art, and it’s cultural impact on the world. I always found this type of art interesting because of how it reflects on our culture, and its influence in marketing and advertisements. Many pop artists also use illustration in their work, which is why I want to use this book for my capstone. This source is credible because of how detailed and thoroughly researched it is.

  1. Scott Pilgrim

O'Malley, Bryan Lee. Scott Pilgrim. Vol. 1-6. Portland, OR: Oni Press, 2004. Print. Scott Pilgrim .

Scott Pilgrim is a series of comic books written by Bryan Lee O’malley. It is one of my favorite comic book series of all time because of beautiful artwork and unique story. This comic has been a big inspiration to my artwork and it has shaped me as an artist. I can always tell how much thought he put through each page of the book because of how he uses shading, angle, color, etc. I have used this series time and time again as a reference for my illustrations and comics. I also love how the book is written because it is both a comedic and compelling narrative. This is definitely a credible source because it’s a widely known and appreciated series among the comic book world. This is a book I will specifically use to see how to structure my panels, and the angle of the scene I am drawing for my comic book pages.

  1. The Art of Drawing Anatomy

Sanmiguel, David. Art of drawing anatomy. New York: Sterling, 2008. Print.

Although I am focusing on illustration/ and comics knowing how to draw anatomy is still incredibly important when it comes to being an artist in general. Traditional art and figure drawing is where I really began as an artist, and it is something that guided me into illustration. Up until these last three years, I had only been taking traditional art classes, so I know how important having these skills are. Many of the illustrations include figures and faces, so this is going to be a helpful when drawing more complex angles and positions of the body. The book includes photographs of models, different mediums of figure drawing, step by step tutorials, and is overall a great reference for basic anatomy.

  1. The Art of Illustration

"The Art of Illustration." PBS. PBS, 03 Apr. 2016. Web. 31 Jan. 2017.

http://www.pbs.org/video/2365688290/

I found this video on PBS and it’s a collection of interviews from various illustrators. They talk about their work, different styles of illustration, and what illustration means to them. It also shows illustrators involved in different mediums like animation, comics, and newspapers/magazines. Obviously, this source is credible because it’s a Public Broadcasting Organization which is funded by the government. While watching this video I really connected with the artists and their answers to why illustration is so important to them. Besides just showing my art in an exhibit I want to show what my art and art in general means to me. I think this is a good video to get that type of thinking started because I want my exhibit to have more of a meaning than just “I created some art.”

  1. The Killing Joke

Moore, Alan, and Brian Bolland. The killing joke. London: Titan, 2008. Print.

The Killing Joke is a Batman Comic written by Alan Moore and Illustrated by Brian Bolland. It focuses on the origins of the Joker, an infamous DC villain, and his relationship to Batman. Although I don’t find the story or plot to be very strong, but I do think it has some of the most gorgeous art and dialogue i’ve ever seen in a comic book. The Killing Joke also has a lot of depictions of sexism, and poorly written female character which is why I think it lacks in overall plot/story. It features a troupe known as “women in refrigerators” which where they features a woman’s assault, rape, death, etc. as a way to further the plot. Many of my illustrations depict women and people of color, so I think this book is a good example of how not to write them into a story. I can use this book as both a reference for my comic pages, and an example of sexist portrayals of female characters and how not to write them.

Chloë Epstein Q3 Art Portfolio

Posted by Chloë Epstein in Senior Art · Hull · B Band on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at 8:46 am
I think this has been my favorite quarter so far because we've gotten to experiment with different techniques and art forms. Right from the beginning Mr. Herrera asked us what type of artwork we wanted to do so I felt like we had a lot of creative freedom. I have done both printmaking and sculpture before, but I had never painted a whole piece in paint before so I felt like I learned a lot from that experience. I also got to practice in both ink painting and printmaking because I either had to make multiple copies or had to do a few practice pictures before hand. My favorite piece was my sculpture because I think it turned out really good and creepy looking. I was proud of this piece the most because I had to make it out of what I could find and couldn't buy anything. I also liked that this piece had to have an actual meaning that was political because we hadn't done anything like that before.

Q2- Artist's Statement and Slideshow

Artist's Statement

This quarter we focused on different art techniques and practicing them instead of completing just big projects like we did a lot last quarter. The assignments were more about learning new skills and repetition than just creating something. I think I learned a lot this quarter because our assignments had us practicing new skills from the sources you gave us. We completed blind contour drawings, a color wheel, and practiced shading with different objects including fruit. None of them were finished pieces, or my best work, but I learned a lot from completing them. One of my favorite assignments though, was the colored pencil portrait we were assigned. I ended up drawing Pedro and the drawing looked just like him, while also having it’s own style. I usually work with pencil, charcoal, or ink when doing a portrait, os I gained a lot from working with a medium I was unfamiliar with. I do hope next quarter we will be able to do both big projects and small assignments while also learning in different mediums of art.

Recipe and Analysis- Cauliflower & Cheese

Posted by Chloë Epstein in Science and Society · Best · A Band on Friday, January 27, 2017 at 11:29 pm

Recipe- Cauliflower & Cheese

Ingredients-

  • ½ Cauliflower

  • Block of Cheddar Cheese

  • ½ cup of Milk

  • Teaspoon of Salt

  • Dash of Pepper(optional)

  • 3 cups of water

Directions-

  1. Pour 3 cups of water into pot and add a dash of salt.

  2. Cut up cauliflower and boil it in pot for 5 min.

  3. After done boiling place cauliflower in water strainer.

  4. Pour ½ cup of milk into glass or microwavable bowl.

  5. Cut up block of cheddar cheese and place it into bowl. Then add salt and pepper.

  6. Add cauliflower in glass bowl and then place it in the microwave for 2 min.

  7. Take it out and stir. Then put it back it for 1 ½ min more or until you think it’s done.

  8. Ready to eat!

    Analysis-

This recipe in my family is supposed to be a healthy substitute for Macaroni & cheese (cauliflower replaces macaroni). The main ingredients includes Cauliflower, Cheddar Cheese, and Milk which are all whole foods depending on the brand. Vegetables and non-homogenized dairy products all count as whole foods according to the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Since most of the foods in this dish are whole foods it’s considered a healthier recipe. 1 cup of Cauliflower is about 25 calories, has 2 grams of sugar, and no fat. 1 ounce of Cheddar Cheese which is less healthy has about 115 calories, 0.1 grams of sugar, and 9.6 grams of fat. ½ a cup of milk is about 52 calories, has 13 grams of sugar, and 2.4 grams of fat. Although this meal may be healthier than regular Mac & cheese eating it all the time would not be healthy because of all the cheese and milk.

The Cauliflower we buy at whole foods is about $3.99 per head, while the cheddar cheese is $3.60 per block, and 2% milk is $2.50. The salt and pepper is about $1.99 each, so the total cost of the meal is about $14.07 in total. This obviously costs a lot more than regular mac & cheese you could get at a fast food restaurant like KFC or popeyes which is about $1.99. Compared to fast food though our recipe is lot healthier, tastes better because it’s homemade, and isn’t too expensive if you ration or save it. We usually get our food at whole foods which is a big corporation. The cauliflower we buy comes from braga farms which is a small family owned farmed which grows organic vegetables. The cheese comes from the cooperation sargento and the milk is a whole foods brand called 365 everyday value. These businesses big or small were involved in producing these foods, and although I don’t really trust big corporations, but  they do say they are FDA approved and organic.

Sharks, Snakes, and Spiders

Posted by Chloë Epstein in Science and Society · Best · A Band on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at 12:12 pm

5 min of Science: Sharks, Snakes, and Spiders

For my 5 minutes of science presentation I decided to focus on the fear we have of certain animals, why we have them, and how they negatively impact our society. I came up with this topic after thinking about when we learned why people think babies are cute. Humans are programmed to think certain traits like big eyes, small noses, and mouths are cute compared to the opposite of those traits. If we know why humans think certain things are cute then when do they think certain things are scary?

I specifically focused on sharks, spiders, and snakes which are three animals that many people fear and even have phobias of. Many species of sharks, for example, are top of the food chain predators with razor sharp teeth and a lust for blood. It’s pretty easy to imagine why someone would be scared of an animal like this because of how dangerous they appear, but they really aren’t at all. Sharks on Average kill 10 people per year and statistically people have a 1 in 3,748,067 chance of getting bitten by a shark according to the University of Florida's Museum of Natural History. Compare this to an estimated 100 million sharks who are killed annually by humans due to overfishing, and bycatch according to the World Wildlife Organization. Snakes are another commonly feared animal which have a 1 in 35,700 chance of biting a person in the U.S. and a 1 in 50 million chance of killing them. Although they do kill and injure more people than sharks, snakes are still apart of a billion dollar snakeskin industry because of humans. Lastly, spiders are one of people's biggest phobias, but on average only kill 6.5 people per year. As you can see these animals kill few too many people for us to be afraid of them.

According to David Ropeik of Harvard University, the reason people are afraid of sharks isn’t because of how many people die, but because of how terrible a death it would be to get eaten alive by a shark. Movies and media like Jaws, Sharknado, and Shark week all base their entertainment off of the grizzly deaths of humans which show sharks as evil killing machines. When we see these depictions of sharks everywhere we actually think this is how we could die if we ran into one even though it is very unlikely. Ropeik also says that humans are hardwired to feel first and think second which is why they are scared of sharks. We also use mental shortcuts like the availability heuristic which uses recent information to make a decision. People jump to conclusions before figuring out a situation, so if something brushes up against your leg in the water you will assume the worst.

When it comes to snakes and spiders we fear them because we are programmed to. Like babies and puppies have features that we think are cute, snakes and spiders have features that we think are the opposite. For example, the number of legs an animal legs is a feature people judge. Spiders have 8 legs while snakes have none and as a result both are thought of as both scary and disgusting. Another reason we are afraid of snakes is because we as a humans have evolved to fear snacks in order to survive and reproduce. Researchers from The Academy of Natural Sciences have found that some neurons in the brain only respond to legless animals. This means people are easily able to spot a snakes compared to other objects surrounding them. This results in a fear and paranoia of snakes because we are more aware of them compared to other animals/objects.

The reason our fear of certain animals matters to our society is because of the result it may have on us. Unfortunately, many animals are becoming endangered and even extinct because of climate change, poaching, deforestation, and overall killing of animals. As I said before sharks are being killed by the millions every year. We do not know how many are left because of the little information we have on the ocean, but they could possibly be endangered. It’s easy not to care about a predator like shark, but the fact is that they are very important to our ecosystem. Since some of them are top of the food chain predators they are able to keep the ecosystem in balance by eating both prey and smaller predators. If enough sharks die the ocean’s ecosystem will suffer due to overpopulation of other animals. Snakes are also being killed by the snakeskin industry which us them for purses, bags, shoes, belts, etc. The killing of these animals and misconceptions we teach others will contribute to poor ecosystem, and will ruin our environment even more. We need to stop fearing creatures that should really be afraid of us.

Sharks are one my favorite animals so this topic was very important to me because I think it’s unfair how we label them as dangerous. Some of them, like the whale shark, don’t even eat meat and even the ones that do are still not a threat to humans. I can still understand why someone would be scared of a shark, especially someone who has been attacked before. Spiders on the other hand I am very scared of, especially for their legs. Despite my fear, I still think they shouldn’t be labeled as dangerous because of the low number of people they kill and the good they do for the ecosystem. All animals and organisms are an important part of our ecosystem and play a part in keeping it in balance, so I think it’s a bad idea to teach people certain ones are “dangerous”.

Quarter 1 Artwork

Posted by Chloë Epstein in Senior Art · Hull · B Band on Friday, November 4, 2016 at 11:24 am
 Artist's Statement
For my final project I created a ceiling tile painting, fall wall hanging, charcoal self-portrait, and a water color painting. I was most impressed with my charcoal self portrait because of how much it looked at me and how much expression was in the picture. I also liked my fall wall hanging because the anatomy looked very proportionate and I it had interesting cartoon style. My ceiling tile painting, and water color painting I was less impressed with and I think it's because my drawing skills are better than my painting skills. For the ceiling tile, I liked the idea of it, but I thought the final product was lacking because it was anatomically incorrect and the figure in the painting was a little stiff. I thought my water color painting was okay, but the subject was a little boring, and I wish I had painted something a little more exciting. I also think I need a little bit more practice with my water colors.
A lot of my artwork, specifically when it's illustration, focuses on strong women because that's what a lot of the characters I draw are. My fall wall hanging, "Up Above", for example features a witch not only because it was halloween themed, but also to show witches (aka powerful women) in a positive light. In my ceiling tile, "Go Away", I have a cartoonish looking woman sitting down and bitterly telling someone to go away. In our society many women are told to not show anger and "smile" more no matter how they are feeling. I made this painting to combat that idea and show that both women and men should be able to feel whatever they want. My water color painting "Tools"  and self portrait "F**kboy" had less meaning behind them, but I still put a lot of work into them.

How Petruchio got his Groove Back

Posted by Chloë Epstein in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at 8:06 am

“Taming of the Shrew” and “How Stella got her Groove Back”

“Taming of the Shrew” is a Shakespearean romantic comedy about a man (Petruchio) who tries to force his wife (Katherine) into obedience after her and her sister are married off. The movie “How Stella got her Groove Back” follows Stella, a 40 year old divorced, workaholic mother who travels on vacation to Jamaica and meets a 20 year old native named Winston. They eventually fall in love, but find complications in their relationship because of the huge age difference. These stories may be from different backgrounds and time periods, but they are very alike. Over the centuries, love and marriage has proved to be about control rather than actually caring about each other and your differences. These texts show that, no matter what century the story is set in, people are more concerned about their own image than the feelings they have for another person. This results in someone trying to control the relationship in order to look good in front of their peers.

"That is, not to bestow my youngest daughter before I have a husband for the elder."

  • Baptista

(Act 1/ Sc. 1/ Pg 35)

This Scene shows Baptista trying to marry off his two daughter and explaining to the various suitors that the only way Bianca can be married is if his eldest daughter, Katherine, is married first. During shakespearian times (15-1600s) a woman’s purpose was to get married and have babies, so if a women doesn’t she is known as an “Old maid”. Baptista wants to Katherine to get married get married first so she doesn’t become one herself and have no source of income one he dies. Katherine must surrender her freedom to some random man in order live a “normal” life. If she doesn’t she will be left poor, judged, and labeled by the rest of society. Whatever relationship she is forced into, it will be about control, rather than love.

In this scene of How Stella got her Groove Back, Stella’s sisters are talking about her love life behind her back while at a spa. Stella walks into their conversation and and tells them she’s fine without dating. One of her sisters then responds with  “She still needs a man in her life”, but Stella doesn’t actually need one. Stella is a rich, successful stock broker who can obviously take care of her son. There is no reason she “needs” a man  in her life other than the fact that it makes her look good. In many romantic comedies, dating and marriage is showed as an essential in life, so if you aren’t in a relationship there is something wrong with you. Like Taming of the Shrew the movie takes place in a society where it’s essential to be in a relationship. The difference between the two is that in “Shrew” people have to marry in order to distribute wealth while in “Stella” people are just accepted to be in a relationship because their life looks more stable. Either way both these women are judged if they have no man in their life.

“This is a way to kill a wife with kindness; And thus I'll curb her mad and headstrong humour. He that knows better how to tame a shrew, Now let him speak: 'tis charity to show.”

  • Petruchio

(Act 4/ Sc. 1/)

In this scene Petruchio is explaining to the audience how he is going to tame his shrew wife, Katherine.  Petruchio wants to make Katherine an obidient wife so he can have control in the relationship. He has no intention of loving and caring for Katherine, he just wants people to see he has control over his wife. This shows he thinks of his wife nothing more than a status symbol because her obedience makes him look like a powerful man.

Stella and Winston get in a fight during dinner about their relationship after Winston insists on paying, but Stella says he doesn’t have enough money so she should pay. Winston then yells at her for trying to control him and the relationship. Stella then says that Winston is childish and she has to make all of the big decisions on her own. Winston says that’s because whenever he makes a decision she judges him for it. Like Petruchio, Stella has to control every aspect of the relationship in fear of being judged herself. For petruchio, it’s for being less of a man/husband, while Stella fears looking immature and “whorish”. If Stella’s in control, that means she can mold Winston into the perfect man everyone expects her to have.

“I am ashamed that women are so simple to offer war where they should kneel for peace; or seek for rule, supremacy and sway, when they are bound to serve, love and obey.”

  • Katherine (Act 5/ Sc. 2)

At the end of the Play, Katherine and Petruchio attend Bianca’s wedding where Petruchio ends up making a bet with the other men on whose wife is the most “obedient”. Each man tells their wife to come over to them, but Katherine is the only one who obeys. She then makes a big speech on how important it is to obey your husband. What stood out in this scene was how happy Petruchio was with Katherine's obedience and how they instantly fell in love after the speech. Before, Petruchio admitted to Katherine that he didn’t even care about her, but now that she’s “tamed” he’s finally in love with her. This is because her obedience made him look good in front his peers, who made fun of him before for having Katherine as a wife. Only when he’s in control does their relationship work out, but that’s just because Petruchio loves being respected, rather than being married to Katherine.

The final scene of how Stella got her groove back is a cliche airport scene, where one person stops another person from going on a plane to confess their love. This is of course after the discussion they had about Winston leaving for Med school and them breaking up because he proved to be too young for Stella. Before Winson can even walk into the airport Stella is already there looking for him. They then start to make out, and it is assumed that they get back together because the movie ends right there. Like “Taming of the Shrew”, this movie also has a very obscure ending, that goes against the rest of the movie. Most of story shows Stella and Winston fighting over age and who's in control, but it’s all resolved after one airport kiss. This leads me to believe that Stella is still in control of their relationship. She’s the one at the airport looking for him, trying to stop him from leaving even though they just broke up. She’s the one who was in the wrong for trying to control who Winston was, while Winston’s only fault was being himself. Once he saw her at the airport they immediately got back together because this wasn’t his decision; it was her’s. Now once again Stella has Winston in her clutches to make her life look more stable by having complete control over everything.

Both the Play and Movie show that society thinks when two people are in a relationship someone should be in control. Stella and Petruchio act like they control their partners for love, but it in the end they are only think about themselves and the control they have over their own lives. Winston and Katherine are just status symbols or tools they use to their own advantage, not life long partners they actually care about.

“She what?” I said. I needed to hear it again. It just couldn’t be true.

“Uuuuh… I think Quiyamah is the one who stole your mom’s ring…” Anna repeated.

“Where would you get that idea?” I said in disbelief.

“Well she’s told me about … how she’s stolen things from your house before.”

“What?!” I was shocked. There was no way she could’ve done this. She’s pulled a lot of shit on me but never this foolish.

“Yeah like some of your jewelry and makeup.” She said.

I had lost some jewelry before and just thought I had misplaced it. I can be pretty forgetful sometimes so it was pretty easy to convince myself that. I also never thought my best friend, since kindergarden would do something like this to me.

“Well- why didn’t you tell me in the first place!?” I asked. I was furious with her for not telling me, but part of me still questioned her story altogether, so I kept interrogating her for the rest of lunch.

“I’m sorry! I really am. I should’ve told you… “ Anna looked upset and disappointed in herself, but I didn’t know if this was genuine or not. At this point I didn’t know what to believe.

“ Makeup is one thing, but your mom’s ring? I can’t keep lying about this.” She said. I couldn’t believe she lied to me. I thought I would have at least one friend that stood by my side but I guess I was wrong.

“Why would she do this, or even think she could get away with this?” I asked in a fiery voice.

“ Well... she said it was easy because you were too naive and trusting to notice anything.” Anna said.

Well that stung. It was like someone punching me in the heart. I could feel the tears in my eyes and I tried to hold them back. I took a deep breath.

“I’m really sorry. I should’ve told you.” Anna kept repeating. We sat in silence for a few minutes. We were sitting alone at one of the lunch tables at the time, but I checked to see if any of the other 8th graders heard us. I looked over at Quiyamah’s table to see if she noticed us. Fortunately, she seemed distracted enough by her friend Marie to notice us talking.

“Well what should I do now?” I said feeling bitterly defeated.

“I think…” She paused. “Maybe you should tell your mom.”

I thought about it for a few minutes. Part of me agreed with going and telling my mom, but I was also scared to. What was I even going to say? That one of my best friends since kindergarten had been stealing from my house, and another friend knew and didn’t tell me  about it? I didn’t know if I could bring myself to do it, but at this point I had no other choice.

“After school.” I stated. “We will go to my mom’s office after school and tell her.”

Getting through the rest of that school day was awful. I thought I was going to cry, but honestly I was still in shock. I counted down every minute until 3:00 o’clock knowing I would finally be out of school only be trapped in my mom’s office where I would have tell the truth.

Once our teacher dismissed us from school, I went over to Anna making sure not to bump into Quiyamah or any of my other so called “friends”. We quickly left the school, but instead of going to my house we walked to my mom’s office which was in Penn campus.

While we were heading over I was texting my mom informing her that Anna and I  would be over to tell her about the stolen ring. I told her that we thought it was Quiyamah and that we would tell her more when we got over. While that was going on Anna was giving me more details on what she knew about Quiyamah’s past thefts. My mood became more upbeat when Anna and I planned out what we were going to say to my mom. I felt like we had a whole secret plan, and that maybe everything was going to turn out okay. At this point I was in too much disbelief to be upset so I started to just laugh the situation we were in.

The closer we got to my mom’s office the more anxious I felt, so by the time we got to her door I wanted to run back home. Once I finally forced myself to knock on the door we heard a voice “come in” in a somewhat serious, but affectionate tone. Anna and I let ourselves in to find my mother on her computer focused on her writing, papers covering her desk.

We stood their for a few second as she kept typing on her computer. She looked up.

“So...What happened?”

We told her everything . I did most of the talking, but Anna would speak up every once in while. I could tell she was frightened by my mother at this point who sat their with a very grim look on her face.

Once we stopped my mom took a deep breath and said “I have a class I have to teach in a few minutes. You join me downstairs, and then we will figure this out afterwards. Is that okay?” We nodded.

For the next few hours we sat in the middle of my mom’s classroom as they discussed if rich people should be obligated to give to others in need. It kept me distracted, but not enough to get rid of the anxiety I was feeling at the moment. After the class she took us back upstairs to get her things.

“Were going to your mom’s house now, “ she said to Anna sternly. “I think she needs to know what’s going on too.”

Anna’s mom was known for being an incredibly strict and tough mother so when wasn’t surprised that she was yelling loud enough at Anna for the whole street to hear. Although I have to admit I was still quite scared myself. My mom noticed how scared and upset I looked so she put her arm around me.

“Are you okay?” she asked.

“Yeah, I’m fine.” I lied. She knew it too.

We went back to our house leaving a sad looking Anna with her mom. My mom called my dad and told him about it, then Quiyamah’s mom.

“I just called your father, and we decided we are going to invite Anna, Quiyamah, and her mother over to figure out what’s going on. We’re going to try to get Quiyamah to confess too, okay?” She said. She looked me dead in the eyes. “You realize how angry I am about this right?”

“Yes.” I said.

“Okay, I love you very much .” She said.

“I love you too, mom.” I said.

That night proceeded to be one of the worst nights of my life. My mom, dad, Anna, Quiyamah, and Quiyamah’s mom decided to come over our house and figure out what was going on. The whole time I just sat their silently with my head down, half listening to the conversation, half of my brain in a completely different world. It wasn’t until my mom asked me what if any of my stuff had gone missing that I started talking, and even then I was a sputtering mess, and on the verge of tears.

Quiyamah never actually confessed to stealing my mother’s ring. My mom knew it because we noticed it was gone right after Quiyamah left my house, and my mom NEVER misplaces anything. She never confessed to taking any of my stuff either. In the end I didn’t really know what happened, but I knew Quiyamah wasn’t a good friend. She has lied, used, and talked behind my back before so I felt as though it was a sign once I found out about this situation. The only thing I regretted about the end of our friendship was not telling her off when I had the chance.

Now I’m going to reveal something about the story I just told. No, it’s not a lie but I do stretch the truth. Their are detailed in her I made up from not remembering the exactly what happened and how it happened. From telling this story I realized one reason why Tim O'brien might’ve lied so much throughout his book. Besides wanting to show people a different truth he made for himself, maybe he also just didn’t remember exactly what happened in Vietnam. It was all a haze to him that he just wanted to block out of his head, and I can relate to this. Part of me doesn’t remember because it’s been so long since the incident, but part of me just didn’t remember. Although I can’t compare my experience to being in the vietnam war, I do know the pain of having to block out a memory, and replacing with a story.

Homophobia and Masculinity

Homophobia and Masculinity

In the United States, it is acceptable and common for a woman to be very intimate around her friends. She feels comfortable enough to hug, sit close, and talk about her feelings and emotions with them. But what about men? Do men feel the same way about their male friends, or even family members? Many experts say no, because of the combination of hyper masculinity and homophobia that men learn starting at a very young age. Men’s fear of homosexuality results in an obsession with masculinity and avoidance of any type of physical or emotional behavior with other men.

Professor and sociologist Michael S. Kimmel stated, “The great secret American manhood is: We are afraid of other men.” What he means by this statement is that men tend to be afraid of being judged by other men, specifically when it comes to their masculinity. Men will do anything to avoid being seen as feminine whether they want to be or not. A significant way men distance themselves from femininity is through homophobia. Gay men are stereotypically seen as feminine, and therefore more submissive. Therefore, straight men need to prove they are not feminine by distancing themselves from their feelings/ emotions, and even making fun of men who are more emotional. For example, a man will call another man a “sissy” when he acts in feminine ways; they will also use the word “faggot” in the same way. Another example is the phrase “no homo,” which is used after one man says or does something emotional to another man. A man can’t even express his own emotions, or he might be labeled as gay. If a man expresses his emotions, he is seen as feminine, and if he is feminine then he must be gay.

On June 28, 2000, James Dale lost his fight in the Supreme Court against the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), who had fired Dale from being a Boy Scout leader because they found out he was a homosexual. It took nearly 15 years for the Boy Scouts to change their policies on Gay Boy scout leaders. Within the Girl Scouts, a homosexual leader, or scout’s experience would be much different. The Girls Scout of the USA allow homosexual scouts, leaders, and now even transgender people can be a part of their organization. One reason that the Girl Scouts is more accepting of homosexuality is that Girl Scouts, Inc. owns the organization, while the Boy Scouts is funded by nonprofit organizations such as churches and Christian groups. Another reason why the BSA is less tolerant is that the organization is afraid its scouts will be exposed to homosexuality, which will is assumed to lower their masculinity. One reason why the Girl Scouts is much more progressive is that it’s more acceptable for girls to express themselves, including when it comes to their sexuality or others’ sexuality. According to the BSA, by having a gay leader or mentor boys are taught to be more feminine, which eventually leads to the scouts “turning” gay.

Male friends have always been known to be less intimate than females. Once a boy becomes a teenager, holding hands or hugging another man becomes taboo. Even at a young age, boys start to feel ashamed or uncomfortable for platonically touching another boy. Part of the reason for this shame is how boys are raised. Many boys are raised to be “tough” or to have little emotion. This approach leads to many boys feeling that they can’t express themselves. According to Mark Greene, editor of The Good Men Project, “By the time they are approaching puberty, many boys have learned to touch only in aggressive ways through rough housing or team sports.” For example, in sports such as football and wrestling, boys can show physical contact but only through violence instead of care. Parents teach their sons that they have to express themselves through violence or they aren’t real men. That is why being compared to a gay man is seen so negatively; gay men aren’t seen as real men.

Besides being afraid of each other, men also don’t trust each other. U.S. culture has taught men that they don’t know how to control themselves, specifically when it comes their sexual urges. Although it’s women who usually experience this behavior from men, what’s to say that a man couldn’t control his urges around another man too? A new study from the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, people who are homophobic tend to also have some attraction to the same sex. Men will act reserved and homophobic to prove to themselves and others that they aren’t homosexual themselves. "Sometimes people are threatened by gays and lesbians because they are fearing their own impulses," said professor Richard Ryan, author of this experiment. Men don’t trust themselves or other men to engage in physical and emotional contact because it could result in them being sexually attracted to other men. Masculinity is so fragile that men are scared of their own sexuality, whether they are gay, or not.

Growing up, boys are taught that masculinity is their most important attribute and they use this masculinity to prove that they are worthy of being called a man. Although women are expected to be somewhat feminine, their respect doesn’t rely on it. Homosexuality is a threat to a man’s masculinity, which it why so many men in the U.S. grow up homophobic.

Bean Buns

Posted by Chloë Epstein in English 2 - Pahomov - A on Monday, January 26, 2015 at 8:16 am

God I hate uniforms. School, sports, work, all of them. No matter what kind they are, they always make you feel like shit. And I’m wearing the worst kind right now; Military. Ugh, I don’t what’s worse, the skin tight under suit riding up your ass or the heaving armor weighing you down, but in the end I always feel so… confined. Anyways right now I’m stuck in vertical line formation between Tomoko and Ares, both half asleep just like me. I think every soldier is right now but I can’t tell because, again, i’m half asleep. We’re all waiting for our commander who thinks making us get up at the crack of dawn and standing in line waiting for him is good for us. And y’know what maybe it is. Maybe it will help us become better soldiers in the long run. Or better people in general. But I don’t care because Getting up in the morning is the worst thing ever.

All the 3 other soldier walk through our line formation and what do ya know it’s Commander Osamu. Or a just some big blobs that decide to walk around. Again i can’t tell because I’M HALF ASLEEP. Commander Osamu walks toward us to check if we’re all in position. Everyone is dead silent, because our Commander is basically godzilla reincarnated. I’m not even kidding he scares the shit out of me.

I see Tomoko falling asleep on my arm, so I nudge her.

“Bean buns… “ She says softly. She’s in the middle of a dream. I’m guessing it’s about bean buns. And food. And eating. Mmm… Bean buns.

Out of no where I feel a hard slap across my head.

“ Private Mizuki, and Tomoko! Wake up!” A male voice says. I open my eyes to find an angry looking Commander Osamu staring at us. Dammit I feel asleep. Both Tomoko and scrambled into position, with our backs straight and our arms behind us locked together. I look around, and see the other soldiers with their red snickering faces. Then I looked at Commander Osamu, who is staring at us with big dead eyes of distrust. When he does this, and he does it a lot, it’s like he’s trying to you figure out. The worst part is I think he does. It’s super creepy.

“Everyone Shut up!” He barks. Everyone then shut up. “How many times do I have to get you people to wake the hell up! I don’t care what excuse you have, I don’t care if it’s hard. Just stay awake and do what you’re told!” He then turns over to use so quickly, we don’t even have time to blink. “I want you two on patrol right now.” He said softly.

“ But, but...Bean Buns sir!” We blurt out. The struggle of hunger is real right now.

“Oh my god, just do it!” He says annoyed.

“Yessir” So Tomoko and I run off to patrol, wearing uncomfortable clothing, half asleep, and dreaming of bean buns.

To be continued...

Symbolism in "The Outsiders"

Posted by Chloë Epstein in English 2 - Pahomov - A on Monday, January 19, 2015 at 6:29 pm

S.E Hinton’s The Outsiders is a book about a boy named Ponyboy who is apart of a gang called the Greasers. Through symbolism, the main character in the book sees his true potential and how he should never lose who he is. But, in an environment where crime runs rampant, and discrimination between gangs is the norm it turns out to be harder to stay the person he wants to be most in life.

During one scene in the book (Pg 77) Ponyboy recites a poem to Johnny. Neither of them get what it means, until Johnny says ”Stay gold, ponyboy, stay gold…” on his death bed to Ponyboy (Pg 148). At first Ponyboy has know idea what he was talking about, until he receives an old letter from Johnny in his Gone with the Wind book. Johnny wrote it before he died. It explains what he thinks the poem meant, and what he meant by “stay gold”. One interpretation  behind this quote was to stay who you are no matter what pushes you not to be. Johnny believed in Ponyboy, that he could always be himself, that he would never be changed by all these outside forces. Every moment of our lives are precious, and we shouldn't waste them being someone else because of the unsatisfying circumstances we may live in.

After finding out Cherry has become a “spy” for the greasers, Ponyboy is in shock wondering why Cherry would do such a thing. “No, it wasn’t cherry the soc who was helping, it was Cherry the dreamer who watched sunsets, and couldn’t stand fights. It was hard to believe a soc would help us, even a Soc who dug sunsets. “ This quote really got to me because it brought up a recurring topic in the story; sunsets. Throughout the book certain characters, especially ponyboy talk about sunsets, particularly how they like to watch them. He also uses it on other characters, like Cherry. It seems to be used as a good, redeeming quality. It shows how lighthearted both characters are, even one from a rival gang. It is also used it johnny’s explanation for “staying gold”. Watching sunsets is one of Ponyboy’s many qualities to keep Johnny in believing in him. Watching sunsets is a way to show a person’s softer side, a way to give the characters dreams and aspirations, not to just live in the moment, but for the new ones too.

This isn’t a quote, but an object in the book that is surrounded by multiple quotes. It is the book Gone with the Wind. It particularly has to do with the character johnny. On pages 75 to 76 It talks about how he loves the book and he can truly understand and relate to it. The book also shows ponyboy how deep of a person johnny is when analyzing it. Then on pages 178 to 179 you see the letter Johnny left for Ponyboy before he died. It was in between one of the pages of the book Gone with the wind. He left it in the book that represented him the most when it came to who he was on the inside. He may have seemed like just some “dumb greaser” to most people, and even to some of his friends he wasn’t any better than that. But, within that book he is so much more. He’s kind, thoughtful, and deep person, and the only other person who knew that was Ponyboy, the person who the letter in Gone with the Wind is directed too. He also mentions Dally, one of the other characters he was also close to, who may have understood him more than people thought. Overall this book represented a different side to Johnny, and even a different side we have in all of us.

There are other people who share my ideas with symbolism and the meaning of the book and well as have conflict with them. Michael J. Twinsburg from Teen Ink said “The book has a strong message of staying young and innocent. It teaches us not to create a shell to block emotions and the importance of friendship.” The book did have a message of staying young and innocent, but I also thought it was saying it is possible to stay true to yourself for the rest of your life. But, it does teach us the importance of friendship, seeing how much of a strong bond the whole gang has, especially Ponyboy, and johnny.

Symbolism is important to the book because without it there are no central ideas you get from it. Sure you could state it through text, but it’s so much more realistic and interesting to figure out what it means. I think this story does a great job at using symbolism, at taking small details and making some of them the main theme of the book. We see a main focus of identity, people acting one way for some people, and another way to other. The main character is unsure who he is, who he wants to be, or he will inevitably become. Without symbolism I don’t think I could ever get the real effect from this theme. From just sunsets, gone with the wind, and a letter I see no matter who you are, or what situation you are in you should always be the best version of yourself, which for Ponyboy is who he is right now.

They’re all looking at me.

(looks down at boobs) There’s only a little. What’s the big deal!

Is it my jeans then? My butt?! (Looks at butt) They are somewhat tight…

But so are their clothes! One of them isn’t even wearing a shirt!

(Pause) Oh no they’re starting to shout! They’re starting to shout!

Okay, okay just ignore them and they’ll go away.

Just ignore them and they’ll go away.

Just ignore them and they’ll go…

ARRGGGH! It’s not working! I just want it to stop. This is so humiliating.

Maybe I should say something…

NO! no I can’t do that. What if I start some shit? It could get really out of hand.

I shouldn’t, I really shouldn’t (long pause, silence)

(Blurts out) What did I do to deserve this?!

I was just walking on the street and this has to happen. Everyday.

Is that what they really think of me? You don’t even know me…

I mean, I see hot guys walking down the street all the time (Short pause) well… not all the time, but I don’t shout at them.

In front of everyone!

I know they have hormones, different from women, but that doesn’t mean they have to make me feel…

Subhuman.

Don’t get me wrong it’s not all of you. Maybe some of you are trying to be nice!

Beautiful is a compliment!

But there comes a point where I just

Where I just don’t know anymore.

And maybe I should just stopping dressing like a “Slut”

Or walking around at night

Or just alone In general.

Or maybe you need to just stop.

Different People, Different Voices

Posted by Chloë Epstein in English 2 - Pahomov - A on Monday, November 10, 2014 at 8:28 am

I have no interest in this topic seeing as I have no accent, I’ve never been against other people’s accents, and never been affected by a family member/ friends accent. I’ve always heard strong accents, and maybe I have judged or poked fun, but they’ve never really affected me personally. But, this is not just about accents it’s really just about your speech in general, so I guess I will talk about what i’ve noticed with my voice, particularly how I talk to people depending on who they are. Even though I have a defining personality that stays with me everywhere sometimes I change a little depending on the person I’m with.

I walk to the cafeteria filled with loud noises, and rushing feet,. I come to the table closest to the lunch line where I find my friend Amanda eating what the school district calls “food”. I set my backpack down on the table, rush to put my frozen chicken masala in the microwave and find a seat next to her.

“Hey.”

“Hi” Amanda says.

“How has your day been going”?” I say somewhat sarcastically.

She takes a deep breath and starts shaking her head.

“Oh god, I just can’t anymore with these teachers. They’re drawin’. I mean Mr. Abbott has a test and a benchmark due in the same week. And guess what! I have to do this asshole’s homework too! We laugh. “I just can’t anymore.’

“Well I’ve got two fuckin’ benchmarks due in the same week. Mr. Chase has one due this Wednesday, and Mrs. Jeffreys is due this Friday. Thank god she changed the date or it would’ve been due on Thursday, I would’ve been fucked!” I say in one breath.

We laugh again, and attempt to eat our lunch in this chaotic cafeteria. Eric walks over to our table and stares and Amanda’s lunch.

“Hey” We say.

“That shit looks like cat food. That’s disgusting.” He says pointing at it, laughter.

“More like cat vomit. “ I say. More laughter.

“No it looks like sweat. Like fucking sweat!” He says. Even more laughter.

“I don’t even know if I want to eat it anymore.” Amanda says.

“ I wouldn’t.” I say. Eric nods his head in agreement. Amanda throws out her food looking hungry and tired.

“Can I have some of your’s?” She says eyeing my food. I give into her puppy eyes and let her have some of my chicken masala.

When i’m with my friends I obviously talk how ever I want to. I curse, talk trash, and am overall incredibly vulgar. And so are my friends. It’s not a bad thing, everyone does it, but you only do it in front of the appropriate people. If I were to talk this way in front of an adult, I probably wouldn’t get a positive response. And, in my case wouldn’t, which is why I talk much differently with adults, particularly my dad.

I sit down at the kitchen table, waiting for my food to be served. My dad scoops up some mac and cheese into my bowl. After giving himself a serving he sits down. We start eating, at first in silence with jazz in the background, and then  my dad starts to talk.

“How was your day at school today?” He asks. He asks this a lot. I guess all parents do.

“Good.” I say.

“Well what did you do?” He asks.

“Nothing much.” I answer. “Just went to classes, talked to friends and stuff.”

“Oh. Well what do you have for homework?” He says.

“I have this history project…” I say.

“About what?” He says.

“Um, well it’s like this project where you have like a fake wikipedia page, and the topic is religion, and everyone does something different on religion. I'm doing art and religion.” I say.

“That sounds cool.” He says.

“Yeah the religion’s I’m doing are Islam and buddhism so I have to do some research on that…” And that’s when a billion other questions come in, and his knowledge on art, religion, buddhism, islam, and pretty much everything else that has ever existed. He also asks me if he can see some photos of this religious art that I have found. I of course have none, so I have to look up some google images. Then after realizing I already finished my meal I clear my plate and ask to be excused.

“Thanks for the dinner dad. It was really good.” I say.

“Your welcome. Make sure to show me those pictures!” He says.

“I will.” I say.

My voice changes when I talk to certain people. I am louder, more vulgar, and more revealing with my friends, while I don’t really know what to say with my dad or most adults in general. I don’t feel like I have to act a certain way in front them, or I have to say certain things to please them. There is no pressure, no worry with them, and I can say mostly what I want. I don’t know if this how your life works, maybe you feel the opposite way, or at least have more freedom to speak towards your parents/ adults. But, I think one thing we can all agree on is we don’t talk or act exactly the same with everyone.

Reflection

SFP-

Inquiry- I wanted to know more about Pollution and how it affects the world in different ways so I could prove it’s existence to people who think it’s not a serious problem.

Research- We gathered information by using resources like the internet and teachers who knew about this topic.

Collaboration- Since focusing on a problem like pollution we were a part of the community because if we don’t do something about our polluted climate soon there will be no community at all.

Presentation- We both took turns speaking and tried to be loud and keep people interested. We were also well prepared when answering questions.

Reflection- I would’ve made our project more complex, for example, during the experiment we could’ve used different amounts of octane, types of gases, and types of plants.

Blog #3: The vote on minimum wage

Posted by Chloë Epstein in English 1 - Dunn - X on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 8:22 am

For my last two blogs, I researched and created my own study on supporting an increase in the minimum wage. Blog #1 was about the supporting/opposing views on minimum wage and Blog #2 was about what average people knew and felt about the minimum wage. Blog #3 is about what I can do to help this cause and actually putting myself out into the world instead of just giving facts and opinions. The way I helped was by spreading information on minimum wage to the citizens of Philadelphia for a vote in May.

I worked at a phone bank with a group called POWER (Philadelphians Organized to Witness, Empower, and Rebuild) where we would call up registered voters and ask them about the upcoming vote on May 20th. We made the calls at Congregation Rodeph Shalom under the leader of Ethel Goldberg and a few other members of the synagogue. Like me, they all really cared about raising the minimum wage and getting people to vote. We worked in a small office where we called people on office phones. Everyone was given a script with three main questions to ask the caller, a voice mail script, and a call list of registered voters. Besides Ethel and me, there were three other women and my dad making calls; I was the only kid. Raising the minimum wage may sound easy because all you have to do is have a majority vote for it. But, it’s actually very hard because 1) Only 48% of Americans actually turn out to vote and 2) For this vote, in order to increase the minimum wage, 70% of Americans would have to support it.

Contact list YATM
This is a picture of the contact list. It featured the person's name, number, e-mail, and address. The other side has check boxes on it so if they talk to us we could give the reason why. There are also check boxes for if they pick up and talk to us so we can find out if they're going to vote on raising the minimum wage or not.

As you can see it is very difficult to change this problem which is why trying to get people’s attention about this cause is so important. Even phone banking is hard because their are many complications with it. For example, sometimes the person didn’t answer their phone, didn’t speak English, had a wrong number, or just refused to talk. You also had to make sure people understood what you were talking about. Many times, when people call about issues, it is confusing and vague so it’s hard to know what you are supporting. Fortunately the script was clear and short. For example, one part of the script explained the issue of minimum wage saying “Did you know that many workers at the airport make $7.25 per hour? This May, we get to vote for thousands of subcontracted city workers like them to get a raise from $7.25 to $10.88 an hour. This will mean a million more dollars in the pockets of working Philadelphia families.” Explanations like these made it easier for people to understand the issues and their stance on them. Making a change can be hard and takes a lot of work, so groups like POWER need all the help they can get.

Even though this process wasn’t easy I did get four people to talk to me, which was pretty successful because they all said they were going to vote and support the minimum wage increase. However, even after making calls, I think there was a lot more I could’ve done to support this cause. I could’ve gotten more involved with other events like this or organizations that were doing similar work. During the phone banking, I sometimes felt like I wasn’t doing the best I could when it came to trying to get people to talk to me. It was hard because it was my first time making calls and I didn’t know how to talk to people who didn’t really care, or didn’t want to talk to me. But, considering all my obstacles, I think I did the best that I could and I’m glad I got involved with an issue like this.

This experience made me realize how important it is to get involved with the community and issues around the world. It’s really hard to make change and a lot people would rather just argue about the problem than actually do something about it. The fact is even though sometimes speeches and debates can help, the best thing to do is take action. It’s helpful to the community and even the whole world and it feels really good afterwards because you’re a part of the fight to make the world a better place.

Final Perspective Drawing

A. I did not know a lot on perspective. I had heard of it before but never practiced it in so much depth. For example, I didn't know every line or angle had to travel back to that one center point in the picture.

B. With one point perspective my drawing looked very realistic and neat. I think this is because instead of drawing anyway I wanted to I had a formula to my drawing making it harder to be sloppy with lines and angles.

C. I would add more detail and shading. I think I mostly focused on the lines on shapes in this drawing. There ended up being a lot of white space making the drawing look incomplete.

D. Always use a ruler and double check your work to make sure your lines aren't crooked. Also look at the drawing to make it makes sense realistically (Looks like the real world should).

E. My ruler which always came in handy for making my lines look straight, and just the room in general. You can't just take one look at something and immediately get it right. You also gave very good feedback. Without your help my ceiling would be be off perspective and my back wall would be too small.

Blog #2

For my last blog post I talked about the facts of minimum wage and the different sides to the argument of whether we should raise it or not. This included basic information, the history of minimum wage, and conservative/liberal opinions. Since then, I have found a great deal of new information.  This information comes from fact related questions on my new survey. For example, I uncovered facts such as the average age or percentage of women in minimum wage jobs. I also tried to find more information on what people on minimum wage can and can't afford. I needed all of this information to make my survey.

I wanted to find an assortment of answers to see what people really know and think about minimum wage. I wanted to see different views on minimum wage from my own, even if I don't agree with them. What I found is that most people answer the basic fact questions correctly. For example, for Question 1, 87% answered correctly that the federal minimum wage is only $7.25. People answered Question 4, on the average age of workers, correctly 64% of the time.   And, on Question 5, on the amount of female workers on minimum wage,  72.73% answered the question correctly.  Most people know these basic facts, leaving only a few people who still need to be informed so they get a better understanding of the minimum wage. Although, for a multiple choice question on the average number of hours a person works,  48.98% of people answer incorrectly (20 hours) while 46.94% answered correctly (40 hours). These results showed the majority of people the got facts right, but need to be informed about a few misconceptions.

There were a number of yes/no questions that gave room for people to comment on their answers. For Question 6 -- have you ever worked for minimum wage -- the number of people who said 'no' was 24 out of 90. And the people who did say yes said they worked for minimum wage as a teenager or young adult to pay of college. But most of the people who took the survey were adults so their life with minimum wage was much different compared to today. Still, most people said they did not enjoy their Minimum wage job. For the Final question I asked for their opinion on whether there should be minimum wage. Only 6 out of 95 people said they do not support minimum wage. Their answers varied from it's destroying small business to people need to get an education to the minimum wage we have now is enough for a ¨low skilled job.¨ For the majority of people who agreed with raising the minimum wage, it was because they felt the minimum wage today is not a livable one. These open- ended question showed people's opinions and real-life experiences with the minimum wage. Specifically their answers show that most people agree that  it is essential to raise the minimum wage so people can live a better life.

Now that I'm done with my original research I have a better understanding of people's position on this issue. This is not just what I found on the internet, which could be completely biased. These were real collective perspectives and research I conducted on my own. After doing this research I feel people have a sense of what's going on with the minimum wage and in my opinion are on the right track when it comes to their feelings on raising the minimum wage. But, they're still facts people need be informed about to get a better understanding of a minimum wage earners life. I think after doing all this research I really want to inform people about it and be active to do my part in helping raise the minimum wage.

Even after seeing real people's opinion's, some who I know personally, there are still many things I wonder about the issue of minimum wage. For example, the group of people who did do the survey knew more about the topic and had a more liberal view on things. What would happen If I got some different people to look a this survey? For example, people with different types of occupations, incomes, political opinions, etc. How would that affect my results? I feel If I were to do this again I would try to seek out a more diverse group of people. I wanted to get a sense of the U.S. opinion of minimum wage, and although I think most people agree with raising it, there's so much more I can learn about what people think about this topic and why.

Photosynthesis Presentation

For the past week our group has been working on a powerpoint presentation on photosynthesis. In this project our goal was to inform about basic information because many people don’t know what photosynthesis really is. We, as a group, wanted to learn, through photosynthesis, how sugar is produced and more on it’s organelle system. One of the most important things that we learned was how photosynthesis makes not only energy but, oxygen too. Next time we will do more research and have a better take on what we are learning about.

Blog Post #1: Minimum Wage

Blog post #1: Minimum Wage

The U.S.’s  most recent recession started in 2007, and ended in 2009. The effects were devastating, leaving many people without jobs. Today, in 2013 the unemployment rate has decreased to 7%, it was at its highest at 10% in October of 2009.  Although more people have jobs, many of the jobs that people are being employed in are low- income and minimum wage jobs. My essay is focused on raising the minimum wage and how it could benefit the working poor and the economy. I feel strongly about this issue because I think its wrong for people to have to work 40 hours per week and barely get paid enough to support themselves or their families.

The federal minimum wage is only $7.25 per hour. Tipped employees like waiters, hotel maids, bartenders, etc. only receive $2.13 per hour. Full time students are paid only 85% of the minimum wage and given fewer hours, so they can attend school. Once they graduate or leave school they must be paid $7.25 per hour. As you can see this amount of money isn’t very high and many Americans are angry because they feel it isn’t enough income to get by in America. Recently many minimum wage employees, specifically fast- food workers, have been protesting against their employers for a higher wage. Because of this, the government has been deciding if it should raise the minimum wage. Many Americans are unaware of what’s happening with the recent minimum wage debate including the different sides of the issue and the basic facts. That is why I think this topic is significant.  There's much to know about minimum wage and people are very unclear about it.

If you ask corporations and conservatives what they think about raising the minimum wage, most would say it’s a “job killer.” This isn’t  a new opinion for these critics. Since FDR tried to raise the minimum wage to 25 cents per hour conservatives have argued it will increase unemployment and destroy the economy. In 1937 The National Association of Manufacturers said raising the minimum wage "constitutes a step in the direction of communism, bolshevism, fascism, and Nazism." But, the truth is the main reason why conservatives argue against an increase in the minimum wage is because the big corporations that pay so little to their workers give a lot money to Republican campaigns. More specifically, conservatives tell the public that minimum wage workers already earn over $47,000 per year. But, if you do the math $7.25/hour for 52 weeks is only $21,112 per year. And many workers make even less than this amount because not all of them work 40 hours per week depending on how much time they have. Conservatives only tell the public these ideas to protect corporations and ultimately themselves.

This picture shows the amount of hours needed to afford a two- bedroom apartment. As you can see It takes a lot more than 40 hours.

To be comfortable, a family with two children needs at least a 2 bedroom home. But, at an average market value no minimum wage worker in the United States can afford even a 2 bedroom apartment working 40 hours a week. This is how little these workers are paid and this is why so many people are fighting for a wage increase. And while the employees only earn $7.25 per hour, top executives of companies earn $9.4 billion per year which is $4,517 per hour. To make matters worse $7.25 is even lower than the minimum wage wage was in the 1960’s in terms of inflation. Is this really fair?

This picture shows how the minimum wage has gone down since the 1960’s in 2012 dollars.

If we want society as a whole to thrive we have to make sure we all have equal opportunities. We shouldn’t give so little to people who work just as hard as their employers. And even if a fast food employee and the executive of the company have much different jobs that doesn’t mean one doesn’t deserve enough to make a living and support their family. After all the research i’ve done so far, I wonder what the life of a minimum wage worker is like and how they get by. I hope to know more about how we got to this point and what is the government going to do about it. Next time I will come with more information to support the increase on minimum wage and show what it can do for the United States of America.

I made my slide look like this because I wanted lots of “empty space” like you showed us the website. I also kept the slide simple by not putting lots of pictures or words on it. Like what you told us I kept it visual instead of putting tons of words and information on. That way it is less complicated to look at and you get the gist of what it’s trying to say. For my slide it’s hard to understand unless I explain, but that was my point. So there was a reason for me to even speak. For the purpose of explaining who I am I put a grumpy cat meme on my slide to show I enjoy not only cats, but comedy too.

Internet connection

This project helped me see how my electronic devices really work. Before, I knew nothing about how these devices were working and what helped them work. For all I new they could have been working "magically". But now I know there are different wires and connections that have the internet work and the device alone to power on. We also learned about the application Lucid chart which we used to create our internet connection document. Now we have more knowledge on the different programs that we have access to on the SLA website.
