If Up Were A Horror Film:

By: Jamie Polson and Nadia Green

Here is the link to our video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNd_5BylO6g

We chose to turn the animated film Up into a horror film. We wanted to turn an innocent family friendly movie into something that was not expected.  The first thing that we did was allow for the storyline of Ellie and Carl to play. We wanted a build up, like most horror movies have. It begins to seem like an average film until the character Russell is introduced. We chose the most dramatic moments in the movie to feature in the beginning. Carl lived a happy life with his wife Ellie. The trailer showed a timeline of the life events when there became a turning point when Ellie died. The trailer showed Carl saddened by the death of his wife. We had a dark background when the words were appearing on the screen. Then we used a sound effect in between transitions to bring suspense. We wanted to focus on creaking of the door to make the viewers feel like they’re on the edge of their seat when watching this trailer. We wanted the build up to seem real and natural.

The first thing that we did was make the background visually darker. Dark backgrounds and shadows are a staple in horror films. We wanted to make it appear that the now horrified movie provided suspense. We added emphasis on sounds such as the door creaking. This allows for a very quiet and still shot. Your focus would be on what is going to happen, sitting on the edge of your seat, which horror often does.

The next thing that we did was spliced together a sequence of scenes together of people or animals looking nervous or scared.  For instance there is a shot of Kevin (the huge bird/snipe) running across the screen. It is followed by text on the screen saying “No matter where you run…” This is supposed to make the audience get more engaged with the trailer.  It piques their interest because it makes you wonder what it is talking about and why it is so dangerous. This is followed by a clip of Carl closing all the blinds and curtains very fast and looking very nervous. There is then text on screen saying “No matter where you hide…” This emphasises how dangerous it really is and that no one is safe no matter what they try to do.  Then this is followed by a scene of Carl sitting in his armchair and settling down but is interrupted by three loud slow knocks at the door, followed by text saying “he knows where you are…” This is meant to spook the audience even more and make them feel uneasy or restless because we have now learned that we are never safe even when we think we are and have entered a state of paranoia.   Then there is a clip of Carl looking out his peephole onto the porch and he opens the door and looks around and sees Russell there even though he is in the air. This is followed by text on the screen saying “He is…” The the reason we included a peephole is because they are kind of a staple of the horror genre. Any horror film that takes place in someone's house usually at some point uses the peephole.  Then finally we hear a peak in the music and see the word “RUSSELL” on screen. This is meant to give some closure to the audience. They finally know what this mysterious thing is but they still have so many questions which is what the trailer is meant to do. They have been intrigued and now want to see the movie to find out what happens. The final thing we see on screen is “Coming to theaters October 2019”  This is very unlikely to happen but the reason I chose October is because that is the month that Halloween is in so people will be in the scary movie spirit and may be more likely to see it, so it makes a lot of sense financially.

Here is the link to my video:
http://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AIJCnfi3cw

For my Capstone I decided to create a documentary for my Unitarian Universalist church.  It will have its 200th anniversary and I wanted the church to have some kind of documentation of it's past present and future and what their goals are as a congregation.

I feel like I have learned a lot while doing this project.  For starters I feel like I have become a better listener.  Since it was a documentary and you always want to make sure that you have clear audio it meant that I could not vocalize when I wanted to react to things that people said for instance if I strongly agreed with it etc.  Another thing that I think I learned was how to make people feel comfortable when being interviewed.  Not everyone is used to being on camera and some people need a little time to fully open up on camera so you want to make sure that you are doing everything you can to make them feel very comfortable and safe.  What I would do before the interview is just ask them how they are doing and just have a casual conversation, but when the interview started I would look them in the eyes when they were talking and tried to be very aware of my body language.  If I ever noticed that I was crossing my arms or had them on my hips I would just put them by my side because folded arms conveys a message of judgment sometimes and can make people feel uncomfortable.
Some challenges I faced was dealing with scheduling.  I am a very busy person and am involved with a lot of things that unfortunately meet on the weekend.  Early on I was able to get 2-3 interviews almost every Sunday but when it started being warmer out things got harder.  I am on SLAs Ultimate Frisbee team which frequently have two day tournaments on the weekend and I also have a lot of choir practices on the weekend as well.  Since I have these conflicts it meant that I could not go to church on Sunday to interview more people so I would have to pick days when I didn't have conflicts and the person I wanted to interview didn't have conflicts.
Another problem I faced was at the very end with exporting the video.  In retrospect I should have tried to finish the editing a lot sooner so that I could have dealt with the issue sooner, but when I tried to export it, I kept getting these messages on my screen saying that there was some problem.  I would try to fix it and tried to export it again several times (which took about an hour each time) but I kept getting these messages.  So I brought it to school to talk to Ms. Walker-Roberts but I was still having the issues even after talking to her.  This caused LOTS of stress for me since it was the day before it was supposed to be due.  Finally I figured out that it was a space issue and that I needed to export it onto an external hard drive that had enough space to store it, so I tried that and it worked!!

All in all this whole process has been very fun and I have learned a lot in the process.  I have had a great time interviewing people getting to know their perspective and where they are coming from a little better.

The Unitarian Universalist Church of the Restoration

My capstone project is that I am going to create a documentary for my church which is called the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Restoration in Mt. Airy.  I have been a member since around 2013 but have been attending my entire life so it means a lot to me. This source is the home page of the Official churches website.  It talks about who they are which I can use in my documentary in a voice over section and I might even quote them on some of their information. It talks about how diverse and welcoming they are which I think is crucial for a church no matter its beliefs if they want to get new members.  This site is credible because it is the official website for the entire church and so whatever is put on the website has to pass through a couple rounds of editing by members of the church to make sure that they actually want that on their website.

I am going to use this site to help inform me of what my churches history is.  I go to the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Restoration in Mt. Airy and have been going my whole life.  I know the basics of its history but I do not know specifics and so I am going to use this site to gain knowledge of its history so that I can put it in my documentary and let the general public know about it as well.

  1. Linda Hansell

Linda Hansell is a member of the church who I have already interviewed and she is a very active member of the community.  She is Worship Associate Leader so she is in charge of all the other worship Associates and makes sure that they do what they are supposed to and once a month she leads a church service.  That is why she is credible because she has expirience in the church and knows about it and knows where she wants it to go in the future. In our interview she talked about how she does not think that the name of the church best describes what it is all about and that we need to change the name to something less christian sounding because we are not a christian church.

  1. UUCR book

This book goes into great detail about the history of Restoration it talks about the church all the way back in the 1700’s when it was built and established.  It also talks about the couple times when it had to move one time because of a fire. It talks about the architecture and why it was built the way it was. It is trustworthy because

The Seven Principles:

Unitarian Universalist Association

This source is trustworthy because it is from the UUA which stands for the (Unitarian Universalist Association) so it is very formal and they are the ones that decide things for the greater UU community so they have a huge impact on my church and are the reason that my church exists basically.  Without the principals of UUism I probably would not go to church. The website talks about what UU’s think about the world and about other people that we believe in the beauty and dignity of everybody and respect people no matter whether we agree with them or not. It talks about the interconnected web of life that we are all apart of which basically means that we are all connected to each other and the earth no matter our species or race or gender.

12 Steps On How To Make A Documentary

Filmmaking Stuff

March 13th, 2017

This website talks about the 12 steps that are needed to make a good documentary.  Some of those steps include: Make a trailer, think of the end first, and use your own music.  I think those are very goods tips that I will strongly consider when in the editing phase of the documentary.  I will also try and write my own music for it as well to add some flavor to the final version. This site is credible because the author (Bru Baker) has won many awards in creating documentaries so it is evident that these techniques work at least for her.

      8. Tim Styer

Tim Styer is a member of the church and is very involved.  He is the moderator which means that he organizes meeting and oversees all the other people who work for the church which is a large responsibility.  He is credible because he has been involved with the church for many years.

      9. Jane Hulting

Jane Hulting is another member of the church and is in charge of coordinating music at the church.  She leads choir practices almost every Thursday evening and Sunday mornings right before church starts.  In the winter around Christmas time she also leads a group called the restoration ringers and they play hand bells.  They rehearse several times a week and perform 3-4 times a year. Another thing that Jane does is that she leads Yoga class almost every week and has several people participate in that many of which are church goers.  Jane is trustworthy because she is very involved in the church and has been attending for around 20+ years.

     10. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUsdwDgPqxs

This video talks about how to make a documentary.  It talks about the necessary things that you need to do in order to make a successful documentary.  It talks about getting a lot of extra footage since you never know what you might need and don’t want to have to film a lot of stuff at the last minute.  It is credible because it is on Expert Villages YouTube channel and their whole shtick. The whole point of their YouTube channel is to get experts who know a lot about their topic and get them to share information and tutorials on YouTube so that other people can be as good as them at that thing.

Habits! By Jamie Polson

Posted by Jamie Polson in English 3 · Pahomov · A Band on Monday, May 1, 2017 at 5:44 am

Are habits breakable?

By: Jamie Polson

Everybody has habits both good and bad and many people believe that it is close to impossible to break the bad habits like smoking or eating junk food, but research shows that their is hope for breaking bad habits.

What are habits?  The definition is” a settled or regular tendency or practice, especially one that is hard to give up.”  What does that mean?  Everything we do is some type of habit.  Everybody has habits no matter where they are or who they are.  Some examples of habits that are pretty common are brushing teeth, the route that one takes when commuting to work or school, or eating breakfast etc.  How do habits form?  They are the result of needs, desires or wants.  Habits come about from three different stages.  The first stage is that the person should continuously try to accomplish something new.  This is often the hardest phase of making a habit, because it requires the full attention of the person that is doing the action.  A good example of this is tying shoes or taking a route somewhere that is new to the driver or commuter.  The next stage is repetition.  A habit is formed from doing something over and over again. If a person ties their shoes a lot, they will, in turn, get very good at tying their shoes and that is now a habit.  The third and last stage is reward.  When people do a difficult task that they want to get better at, a good way to do it with more ease is to reward themselves everytime they do it correctly.  This sends a message to the brain saying that it likes doing that action because it leads to a treat afterwards.  This then makes the action easier and more fun even later when you do not reward yourself because your brain has a happy memory of having done that thing.

Habits can be both good or bad.  Even a healthy habit can be dangerous if you do it excessively.  To explain, if you eat too much even healthy foods, you could get fat, which is not healthy.  Exercise is good but if one exercises for eight or nine hours a day, it could put a lot of strain on your body.  You could also lose more weight than is healthy or natural.  Often habits are formed around a certain desire or need that people feel is important.  There are many behaviors that feel good while people are doing them but have more negative impact than positive.  Smoking tobacco products is a big one. While one is in the act of smoking, it may feel great. It relieves stress and makes you totally calm. People have also reported that they tend not to binge eat while they are smoking.  However, smoking has more negative impact than positive, like lung cancer, damage to one’s airways, increase of having a stroke, and increase of dying just to name a few. The reason why people don’t stop in spite of these dangers is because of the negative impact is because of how addictive the tobacco is.  Often people also don’t realize how bad they are until it is too late.

How can one break a certain habit?  Habit breaking can be very hard. If the following steps are accomplished it can be accomplished.  Typically, the type of habit that people want to break is the type that is evident and off-putting in social situations, like biting your nails when in a conversation.  In order to break this type of habit, you have to notice when and where you typically do it.  Next, you need to follow through with some sort of consequence (applying a nontoxic, but bitter taste to the nails).  For instance maybe eating a food that is unenjoyable for that person so the habit becomes undesirable to the person in question.  Other good ways of eliminating bad habits is to get rid of the trigger.  The trigger is the thing that causes someone to do the habit, like a trigger for relaxing on the couch is that someone would automatically watch T.V and get unhealthy snacks.  A good example is if you tend to immediately sit on the couch, eat chips, and watch tv, when you get home , it might be wise to move the chips and remote to other places so that it is harder to find them.  This would start to slowly break that habit because of the work required to start it.  Another good way to break a habit is to get a friend to push you to stop, this would need to be someone who cares about your well being and wants to see you live a healthier life.  Ideally this person would be present when the person tends to engage in the bad habit behavior.

Habits are caused from doing an activity over and over again with the intention to get better at the activity.  They also help to free up our minds to focus on more important things.  Everybody has habits both good and bad which are caused consciously and some without realizing it.  Many people think that bad habits are close to impossible to break but with hard work, repetition, persistence, and a friend to help it can be done.

The Taming of the Groundhog: Shakespearean and Modern Views of Relationships

The Taming of the Groundhog:

Shakespearean and Modern Views of Relationships

By:Jamie Polson

4/24/17

The Shakespeare play “The Taming of the Shrew” deals with male and societal expectations in relationships.  Petruchio (one of the main characters) hears about Katherine, that she does not want to get married, and that she is a strong independent woman and is kind of like a “shrew” hence the name of the play.  Petruchio is up for the challenge of making Katherine more lady like.  He talks to Katherine's dad (Baptista) and hears that there will be a pretty large dowry involved if he marries Katherine since Katherine is already kind of old and Baptista really wants Bianca, his youngest daughter, to get married.  Lucentio who is another main male lead character goes to Padua originally to study Philosophy, but sees Bianca and wants to pursue her and stop studying philosophy.

A more modern view of male and societal expectations in relationships is in the movie “Groundhog Day”.  Groundhog Day is a movie about a meteorologist (Phil) who works for Channel Nine News in Pittsburgh and one day he goes to Punxsutawney Pennsylvania for Groundhog Day with two colleagues of his from Channel Nine: Larry (the cameraman) and Rita (the producer).  Phil and the gang plan on leaving Punxsutawney the same night, but a blizzard hits, and they have to go back.  They stay in a nice Bed and Breakfast.  The next morning, when Phil wakes up, for some unexplained reason it is still Groundhog Day, and he is the only one who seems to notice.  This phenomenon keeps on happening hundreds of times and Phil gets the day memorized down pat and ends up changing the outcome of the day over time, using it to pursue a relationship with Rita, who is initially not at all interested.  Both texts present male and societal expectations to be mainly about power, sex, and money even though they are in very different situations.

(pg 111 act 3 scene 1 line: 33-38)

Hic ibat, as I told you before, Simois, I am Lucentio, hic est, son unto Vincentio of Pisa, Sigeia tellus, disguised thus to get your love, Hic steterat, and that 'Lucentio' that comes a-wooing,  Priami, is my man Tranio, regia, bearing my port, celsa senis, that we might beguile the old pantaloon

In this scene in the Taming of the Shrew Lucentio is telling Bianca about who he actually is, trying to win Bianca over by using mind tricks to try to get her to love him even more.  He is mainly trying to increase his chances of having sex with Bianca.

In The above Groundhog Day scene, Phil and Rita are throwing snowballs at some kids and Phil says “I wish we could do this with our own kids”.  What he is really doing there is, like Lucentio, trying to use mind tricks to fool Rita into having sex with him by being something that he isn’t.  He said that he wished he could do that with his own kids, he said this but had no intention of ever having kids or even of a real relationship with Rita.  He was trying to play into Rita’s motherly instincts as a woman so that she could try to imagine him as a dad and the only way to throw snowballs with your own kids is to have sex first.

Page #87 act ii scene 1 line 177-189 petruchio:

“And woo her with some spirit with then she comes! Say that she rail; why then I'll tell her plain She sings as sweetly as a nightingale:Say that she frown, I'll say she looks as clear As morning roses newly wash'd with dew: Say she be mute and will not speak a word; Then I'll commend her volubility, And say she uttereth piercing eloquence: If she do bid me pack, I'll give her thanks, As though she bid me stay by her a week: If she deny to wed, I'll crave the day When I shall ask the banns and when be married. But here she comes; and now, Petruchio, speak.

In this scene in “Taming of the Shrew” Petruchio is about to meet Katherine and is saying what he will say to her when he meets her.  His plan is to contradict whatever it is she says or thinks; for example, he says that if she wants him to leave, he will stay for a week, and if she does not wish to get married, he will say he does.

This connects very closely to Groundhog Day in the above two scenes.  One of the scenes is when Phil is trying to get to know Rita, he doesn’t contradict her per se but he does play mind tricks.  What he did was he would ask her things that would give him information like when he was buying her drinks and she said that her favorite drink was a sweet vermouth on the rocks with a twist.  Phil used that information to his advantage and said the next day that his favorite drink was a sweet vermouth on the rocks with a twist, to which Rita responded, “Really? Mine too!”  This connects with the Taming of the Shrew, because both Petruchio and Phil were taking advantage of the women in the situation by exercising power and control in the relationship by using the words that the women speak against them.

(pg#83 act 2 scene 1 line: 121-127 Petruchio)

Signior Baptista, my business asketh haste, And every day I cannot come to woo. You knew my father well, and in him me, Left solely heir to all his lands and goods, Which I have better'd rather than decreased: Then tell me, if I get your daughter's love, What dowry shall I have with her to wife?

In this scene in The Taming of the Shrew, Petruchio has heard of Katherine and how she can be like a “Shrew” and that she is a strong independent woman.  He does not actually want to marry Katherine.  He is just marrying for the dowry that he will receive from Baptista, and as a challenge for himself to see if it is possible to change someone from being shrew like to be ladylike or a good wife.  It is basically an economic transaction, and a social experiment, for Petruchio.

In The above scene in Groundhog Day, Phil is super popular after having just saved the lives of a couple people and helped out countless others.  He is playing the piano for a big party in Punxsutawney.  There is then an auction event where the prizes are the bachelors in the room.  The rules are that you can do whatever you want with them, as long as it is legal.  Phil walks onto the stage, and people start yelling out numbers immediately, going up by five dollars each time, and eventually realize that they are going to run out of money, when suddenly Rita calls out from the back of the room “$339.88”.  This is obviously the highest number in the room, so Rita dances with Phil like she had been before the auction.  This scene shows how modern American society places monetary value on relationships.

In both the Taming of the Shrew and in the movie Groundhog Day the themes are very similar.  They both deal with power, control, and sex in relationships.  Both talk about how women in society have typically been used primarily for their bodies and have been seen as objects and not as people.  Both texts talk about how men try to exercise power, and control women, in relationships.  Both show how society monetizes relationships.  Both texts show male and societal expectations in relationships in very much the same way, even though they are very different situations

Jamie's trip to Genoa

Posted by Jamie Polson in English 3 · Pahomov · A Band on Sunday, January 8, 2017 at 10:30 pm

In January of 2012, my parents and I left for Genoa, Italy.  When my parents initially told me about it, I was hesitant because it meant I would have to leave all my friends and family in Philly and wouldn’t see them for 6 months.   The departure day came and we flew to Milan.  When we landed there was a large taxi waiting to take us to our apartment building in Genoa.   We lugged our suitcases into the tiny elevator and then into our apartment.  It was a nice little apartment and after a while, I was able to get used to it, but at first it was pretty hard.  Every night for maybe a month I had trouble sleeping.  I would start thinking about Philly and all my friends and I would start to cry. This lasted for maybe 10-15 minutes and then I would try to stop.  I missed my friends so much

A few days after we arrived when we had recovered from jetlag, my mom told me about a school called ISG (International School of Genoa).  I was to start attending the following week.  My mind started racing.  I thought, “What if no one speaks English there?” and “What if no one likes me?” My parents went with me to take the bus over to the school.  We didn’t have a car and they needed to show me the bus route.  They made sure that the right people knew that I was there.  We all got a tour of the building and then they hugged me and said,

.“Have great first day at school” they left me with the school secratery.  “This is Noah Rossi,” she said indicating a young boy.  “You will be following Noah today.  You and he are in the same classes.”

Noah led me through a courtyard , and to our first-period class, which was English.

I walked into the classroom with Noah.  At first, I was anxious but then I noticed that everyone was smiling at me.  I smiled back and soon they were bombarding me with questions, like “Do you celebrate Christmas in America?”,”Do you have McDonalds in America?” and other typical questions that we ask people of different nationalities.  The teacher interupted.  Her name was Ms. Ryder and she was very tall and wore high heels to make herself even taller.  She had amazing posture.  She got up from her desk and asked if I would share a little about myself.  I was flattered, and got up in front of the class and told them a little bit about my family and life in the States.

After a couple of hours it was time for lunch.  I got in line and grabbed a tray.  After a few minutes it was my turn at the front of the line and I said

“Hi can I have some pasta a piece of bread and some pear juice?’  The lunch lady looked very disappointed she said,

“No you must have lasagna first before anything else.  It felt weird to me that she was telling me what I could and could not eat but I went with it anyway even though I don’t like lasagna.

I remember one day in particular that was pretty intense for me.  It started out as a normal day.  I woke up, got dressed, poured myself some milk and cocoa puffs into a bowl, and watched an episode of the animated Mr. Bean series.  Then I got my backpack ready for school and started walking down the long hill that leads from our apartment building with my dad.  We waited at the nearest bus stop.  What normally happened is that my dad and I would board the bus together, get off at the stop close to my school and play some 1 on 1 soccer before school.  Then he would say goodbye to me from there.  That did not happen on this day.  When the bus pulled up to the bus stop I realized that it was extremely crowded.  I got on but my dad did not.  I was terrified because I did not have the route memorized.  At the time my Italian wasn’t very solid so it was hard to explain to people what had happened.  My dad was running after the bus as fast as he could, and he yelled to me,  “Get off at the next stop!”  So I tried, but it was pretty difficult to get out of the bus since there were so many people.   I managed to get off the bus but my dad was still far away.  The bus stops are far apart in Genoa.  I just looked around and it looked foreign to me. I did not see my dad and I feared I was going to be late for school.  There were two  Italian girls with me at the bus stop and they seemed concerned.  They asked me what was wrong, in Italian, and I responded in English.   I said, “My dad didn’t get on the bus with me and I don’t know how to get to school”.  The girls didn’t understand what I said.  It seemed to make them nervous which did not help me at all.  After a couple of minutes, I saw my dad running to where I was.  When he reached me, we hugged and talked about what we should do next.  We agreed that we should wait for the next bus.  Luckily it was not nearly as crowded as the first one so we could both fit on board.  We got off at my school and I was on time!  I was so happy.  After that day I had a much more positive view of Italy.

Not long after the my bus adventure my grandfather came to visit.  We took a short trip with him to a park called Nervi.  First we headed to the”passeggiata” which is a sidewalk that is really close to the sea.  We got to the park gates.   Unlike most of Genoa, the park was very green and had lots of palm trees that were all pretty close together.  We saw lots of people walking their dogs, jogging, hanging out with their kids at the playground, and sitting around on the grass.  My dad and I had brought our soccer ball when all of a sudden I had an idea.

I said “What if we played soccer with the goal being the space between those trees there?!”  My dad really liked the idea so we got out the ball and started kicking around.  We played for close to an hour and I got really sweaty.  It was one of the first times when I felt really good about being in Italy, because I got to do something that I enjoyed, with people that meant a lot to me, in an awesome place.

My experience in Italy in 2012 was mixed.  There were some things that happened that were frustrating, but they did not overpower all the wonderful things that happened. Over time, I totally forgot about the bad things.  I can think of many more examples of great things that happened, rather than bad.  I look forward to going to Italy again in 2018.

This connects to The Things They Carried because, at first, like me, Tim was very keen on not going to war and wanted to do everything he could to get out of it.  Eventually he found some good in it and ended up really liking it.  I realize that I wasn’t faced with the challenge of war, but I had to adapt to a new home, in a new city, in a foreign country, where they spoke another language, in the middle of the school year.  It wasn’t easy but it was worth it .

How The Beatles Changed Music And Music History

By: Jamie polson

English 3

Pahomov

Paul Mccartney, John Lennon, Ringo Starr and George Harrison are all famous for being in  The Beatles.  They all came from Liverpool, England, and became a singing group in 1960.  They used their vast knowledge of music styles to their advantage. They tried to make songs based on the types of music that they would listen too.  Although The Beatles knew a lot about music styles, they didn’t have extensive musical training.  The Beatles experimented with lots of instruments and music styles and sometimes combined them in new ways.  The Beatles influenced music and music history in many ways.

In their early years, they would listen to all kinds of music such as: Rock, Pop, Folk, Blues, Jazz, Classical, and even Indian. A song that they wrote that had Indian influence, was “Within You, Without you”.  They asked some friends whether they wanted to be in one of there songs to play some Indian instruments, the friends said yes. The song itself was written and inspired by the time that The Beatles spent in India.  George (who wrote the song) said that “ I had brought back a lot of instruments.” The instruments that he brought back included a Sitar, Tablas, a Swarabat, Finger cymbals, and flute. He experimented with many of these, however he didn’t really know how to play them.

The Beatles stayed interesting for so many years, partially because they experimented with many things like:  Song form (melodies and harmonies and what parts you sing when) and instruments.  Some of the instruments they included were instruments like Choral Electric Sitar, Recorder, Kazoo, Harmonica, Banjo and many more different instruments.  One song that incorporates a lot of instruments and techniques was the song Revolution #9.  Written in 1968, by Lennon and Mccartney. Revolution#9 was a very experimental song as well, because it used so many new techniques in it, to make it sound different than other people's music.  One technique they used was called looping, (where you take a tape or audio file and you repeat it over and over again so it sounds like you are just saying that phrase a lot.)  They also played around with playing tracks backwards, and combining 7 or 8 songs into one big mash.  They created this song while on their drug stage, where they were very experimental with most of their songs.

The Beatles messed around with song form, as in the song A Day in A Life when they didn’t just have verses,a chorus and a bridge but also a fourth part and they would mix them up in an unconventional way.  A Day In A Life (by John Lennon and Paul Mccartney) was inspired by two news articles by the UK Daily Express that talked about this man who was killed in a car accident and another article that talked about how there was this group that had to count 4,000 holes, in order to figure out how to fill them.  This affected how other musicians saw music and what their possibilities could be.  Some of the ways that The Beatles got ideas for songs are pretty interesting like for Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite, they got their inspiration from a poster that had all those words on it [1].  They saw it, thought it was poetic and wanted to put music to it.

The Beatles changed music as we know it a lot by experimenting with different types of genres of music and with instruments and encouraging other groups to do the same like Nirvana, The Beach Boys, Billy Joel and many others.  They rarely sang other people's music because they had so much content. Many other groups followed suit.  They set trends for music and style for many years.  Over the years, The Beatles have made a huge impact on music and music history because they were willing to try things that were new and different..

Reader profile: Olivia Cooper

Posted by Jamie Polson in English 3 · Pahomov · A Band on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at 11:38 am

Olivia is reading a book called “Confessions of a hater” by Caprice Crane. Olivia said that if she was the director of her book made into a movie that she would make it into a drama even though it is a comedy because Olivia wants to see it have more drama in it. Olivia also said that some reading challenges she has are comprehension and focus. Olivia said that she often gets distracted from whatever she happens to be reading. If Olivia was on a dessert island and had to choose one book to bring she said that she would would bring the outsiders because that was the first book that she read and liked.

Olivia said that if there was a book inspired by her life that it would be called Liv’s Lemons because sometimes life can be sour. If Olivia was sranded on an island and could be stuck with one charictor from her book she would want to be stuck with “Andy” because he is smart, kind and an understanding person. Olivia enjoys comedy and satire books because she feels that she can relate to them more. Olivia wants to throw the book thief out a window because she thought it was sad and boring and unrelatable. Olivia wants to be the kind of reader that can read for fun not just for school and wants to try and find the deeper meaning in books.

March ILP update March Polson

Posted by Jamie Polson in Ilp - 10Th Grade - Miles - Wed on Monday, March 28, 2016 at 3:32 pm
I have done many of same things in March as I did in February.  That is basically working on my cigar box juggling routine in preporation for performance at shows.  More specifically the Philly Folk festival.  I have also done some puppetry work which was a lot of acrobatics as well because it was a thing called pepo and pepe and basicly you are in a suit where your hands are the feet of a guy and your feet are the other feet of the other person and it looks like they are dancing and it is very cool.  I am looking forward to Philly folk fest very much I go every year and it's a lot of fun.  People sing on the main stage but the give and take perform on a smaller stage close to the big stage.  All the performers get free food so if this year I become a performer I will get free food!!

Polson ILP check-in February

Posted by Jamie Polson in Ilp - 10Th Grade - Miles - Wed on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at 8:54 pm
As many of you probably know if you have read my past updates.  I am doing an ILP with the Give and take jugglers.  A Philly based juggling organization that does shows at local festivals and conventions such as Philly folk fest which is something they do every year and I probably will be performing in.  (hopefully).  But lately I have been working on a routine with what are called cigar boxes (here is a video to show you what kind of stuff you can do with them)
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyxo6mfSqWo
Cigar box juggling is sort of a lost art and not that many people do it now adays which is why I enjoy doing it.  I like doing things that not many people do, it makes you stand out in the croud.  But anyways my routine is coming along really well and i am really exited for folk fest this year when I will most likely present it to an audience for the first time.

Polson December/January ILP check in

Posted by Jamie Polson in Ilp - 10Th Grade - Miles - Wed on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at 7:46 am
I have been doing things pretty similar to my ILP as before but I have done some new things.  I sewed up some triangles for a banner, I had to research middle schools in the Philadelphia area so that the Give and Take could have possible gigs.  I also had to look up jewish schools because they have money.  Earlier in December Eric, Alison and I looked at a tape from the Give and take and cretiqued it to see what should stay in and what should be removed because they had a gig a few days later where I sold merchandise for them and it went really well.  My ILP accurs in a place called the fanicular station its near queen lane train station and after I do financial things for them I get rewarded by getting to juggle for the rest of the time.  I have been trying to come up with a cigar box routine for this upcoming philly folk festival or possibly spring thing which if you don't know (which you probably don't) both are folk music oriented but also have other things going on at the same time like my parents do juggling workshops at both and it is also where the give and take perform a lot.

Jamie Polson's November Post

Posted by Jamie Polson in Ilp - 10Th Grade - Miles - Wed on Thursday, November 12, 2015 at 2:39 pm
Although I may have not have my original ILP I found a new one and have been attending for 3 or 4 weeks now.  The ILP is I am an intern for the Give and Take jugglers which is a juggling group based in Philly and they do shows at schools and if you request them to perform they will kindly do that.  In the past few weeks I have done lot's of financial work for them such as searching elementary schools in the Pennsylvania Delaware area and get genral info about each like where it is who the principal is, the url and email for the school and principal and that type of thing.  Also I had to research Country clubs and get the same type of info and make a table to put all the info on.  That's the business side of it but the fun stuff is that I also get to practice classic give and take routines like spinning a ball on my finger and perform pipo and pepe which is a kind of acrobatic act where your in this suit bent over and it looks like there are these two guys (puppet people) dancing and you move your hands and legs to make them move and it looks really realistic and awesome!!

Jamie Polson's ILP October post

Posted by Jamie Polson in Ilp - 10Th Grade - Miles - Wed on Thursday, November 12, 2015 at 2:28 pm
My first ILP in the month of October was I was an Intern for A production of Watership down.  It was directed by A man named Allen Radway who also goes to my church and that is how I found out about it.  It met Mondays-Saturdays from 7-11 pm.  It happened at Drexel University and was really fun.  Some days we would go over the script and do read through's, other days we would act like rabbit's and interact with each other as rabbit's.  Other days we would just do theatre games and fun stuff like that.  We practiced doing shadow puppets a lot because the show had a major puppetry aspect to it which was another reason why I joined.  Since I am a minor the University did not allow me to be on the campus and would have charged my family and I millions of dollars if I got hurt in any way because they did not want to be responsible.  So I had to stop doing that ILP but I saw the show on the 6th and it was amazing!!  I would highly recomend it to anyone who likes theatre

Screens and teens glows and grows

Posted by Jamie Polson in English 1 - Giknis - A on Monday, June 1, 2015 at 9:19 am

So for my project one thing that was awesome in the research was that I was able to find so much information and cites that were about my topic.  What that meant was that I had more cites to source and to summarize in my annotated bibliography.  I had a lot of fun collecting the information in my annotated bibliography because I am really interested in my topic how screens affect teens mainly because I myself am a teen.  I want to know more about gorilla glass and how it's made and how is it the strongest glass.  Also I wish I had found how phones and cameras were made because since I am a video and photographer I am interested in that.

In the original research it was quite tricky to get a hold of Jeff Adams the google guy who if I really needed him to give me the information I could have gone over to his house because he lives a few blocks away from me so I could have walked.  But he responded within the deadline but barely so if I were to do it again I would ask a lot earlier to give him time to respond and give me time to possibly go to his house.  When I did get a hold of him he gave me a lot of valuable information that only a google employee would know such as whether they get breaks from their screens to optimize work time the answer yes.

The Agent Of Change went well in my mind so far it hasn't gotten many views only views from me however when something goes on youtube it is there forever so there is no saying when one person sees it then shares it and other people see and who knows I could get internet famous but that probably won't happen, and I am happy with 4 or 5 views.  If other people do see it I hope they learn about the problems I adress in the video and don't just watch it cause they can.  I hope to make more videos like that to raise awareness of social problems.

screens vs teens the finale

Posted by Jamie Polson in English 1 - Giknis - A on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at 9:52 am

In blog post one and two I talk about how tv makes teens depressed and violent video video games make us more  For my agent of change I made a video that basically summarized my annotated bibliography and included all of the important facts.  I also talk about how if you use your screen for an hour before you go to sleep it will typically take you an hour to fall asleep if you are normal.  My brother helped me to film the first scene which I appreciate.  I think the video is very good and clever and will hopefully raise awareness I will post it to Facebook and other public

media's even though it is already on youtube to try and get the most attention.  I feel like as a side thing to this project I have spent less time on screens even though the project kinda required a lot of screen time.  If I were to do this again I would film the agent of change sooner.  Filming my agent of change was very tricky because I am no professional and I don't have fancy equipment so I have to find ways around problems; like when I needed to read off my script but didn't have a teleprompter or anything so I just taped it to the wall.  Also I originally wanted to film myself doing fun stuff like swinging from the monkey bars or doing a handstand but their were a bunch  of flaws with those desires such as I couldn't hang from my feet on the monkey bars because I had never done it before and I coudn't read my script when I tried to hang upside down, and when I tried to do a handstand I couldn't hold it for all of my lines and it was also hard to read my script because all of the words were upside down.  Nature was also a hastle because I would have like to have filmed more things outside but it took forever to film the first few and by then it started to get dark and I didn't want to film in the dark because I don't have any fancy lights and stuff like that.  My parents also played a part in where I filmed because my mom was on the phone for a while and I didn't want to bother her so I didn't film near her and my dad was working in his study at home so I didn't want to film near him also I felt self conscious when they could hear me recording, so I mainly filmed in the basement where it was quite.  However I do not like to film in my basement for a couple of reasons

1 because the lighting is pretty bad

2. because it's really quite like creepy quite

3. and lastly it's really creepy mainly  because of the lack of light and lack of sound but that just makes it all the more creepy and makes me paranoid, so that's why I don't like filming in the basement.

here is my annotated bibliography

The glass era

Posted by Jamie Polson in English 1 - Giknis - A on Monday, May 11, 2015 at 9:42 pm

In my first blog post I talk about how to much screen time before bed can lead to difficulty in getting to sleep depending on how long you are using or watching the device.  A Study showed that teens who spend an hour on their screens before bed usually take an hour to get to bed.  I also talked about how teens who play violent video games after a while even if they don't start out this way tend to get more violent and aggressive because of what the game is showing them.  I discussed how tv shows give kids a biased perspective on life and how things should or should not be.  For instance if you watch a news program a lot they would probably have a lot of sad and depressing news.

For my original research I interviewed lots of classmates like Elias, Johny, Kara, Fabian, Jorin, Alexa, Elani, Sandra, Java,Mehki, Eli, Obie,

I interviewd these people to ask them sort about their daily lives and how they interact with screens.  I also interviewed a man named Jeff Adams who works for Google specifically Google Maps.

This hyperlink is snapshots of the conversation I had with Jeff)

My personal opinion is that screens themselves are not the issue it’s how we use them that's the issue.  Say I watch TV for an hour a day and use the computer for 30 minutes a day that would be fine that is barely any time at all, unfortunately that is not the case for most teenagers.  I think the general vibe is if it’s made it’s better and “I” need to update my old device.  Teens will look for any exuse to get a new phone not even if they want it but because it’s made makes you want have the earge to get it, so you look for every small detail wrong with your current phone and say that the new phone doesn’t have those so you get it.  You get even though there absolutely no difference from your old phone to the new phone. Now I don’t actually have an Iphone so I can’t speak to this example but I am sure that plenty of you would agree.  I would say I agree that many of parents decisions to cut their child's screen time however I had a discussion with my brother in April and he was defending screens using teens and brought up many interesting points; such as if a person [teen] is being forced into a conversation where they know the people will not take their side of course they are going to want to talk to their friends because their friends will support that person.  I agree with this statement somewhat however if you know someone is not going to take your side that is a debate right there and that could be fun.  I have a cousin who before he is a teenager spends more time on video games in one day than I have probably in my life.  I am quite worried for him because he can finish a whole DS or XBOX game in half a day.  Whenever we go to visit him I usually babysit him and we usually end up playing role playing games taht are about whatever game he finished that day and it usually ends up with me being killed or injured in some way because I like to play out my part.

Screens are good sometimes to good you should moderate yourself when using them even if it is a school project.

I have personal experience with sleep deprovision aspect of the effect of screens on teens before bed because I always watch videos on youtube and finish my homework before bed.

I am curious about  gorilla glass I know some about it but I would be fasinated to see how it is made.

How screens affect teens by Jamie Polson

Posted by Jamie Polson in English 1 - Giknis - A on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at 4:51 pm
I am interested in how screens affect teens because we are in the era of technology and it is so easy to lose yourself in them.  I have been subject to doing this and since I am a teen I was wondering what it can do to a teenager.  So far I have learned that if you watch tv before you go to bed it usually takes about an hour for you to get to sleep and people who spend to much time on their phones and such usually go to bed pretty late so they lose a lot of sleep because of that.  I also learned that texting or playing to many video games can lead to something which is called gamers thumb.  This happens when you use your thumbs to often for tasks like gaming or texting. http://fit.webmd.com/teen/recharge/article/teens-screen-time

Another study showed that people who spend to much time on their phones or screens typically have more body fat and or have worse dites usually consisting of chips and that type of food.  The study also showed that people who play violent video games are often very violent themselves.  They also have very short tempers, and often get into fights.

kids watching TV

Another study showed that kids who spend to much time watching tv are more depressed because they have a biast window on life.  For instance if you like news programs they often have depressing sad news and very selective stuff that they include and they leave a lot out.

Polson, net neutrality video

Posted by Jamie Polson in Technology- Freshmen - Hull - b2 on Friday, January 9, 2015 at 8:17 am
Net neutrality is treating a internet equally.
The ISP's coined the phrase
The FCC doesn't like what the ISP's have been doing with charging people for the fast lane.
They have there own internet run the same as everyone elses because it would be hipocritical.
I think that net neutrality is really important because it is important that we all have the same thing.

Polson, Why teens need to know about net neutrality tech class

Teens need to know about net neutrality because we are such a connected world and it is important to know about what we are really doing when we do something.  Net neutrality is making sure that everyone has the same amount of internet.  A good example of this is that a few years ago Google opposed big internet providers to manipulate the company so that they could slow down speed up or do anything with Google.  Google said they never want to be part of an organization that has full control of their organization.
Net neutrality is your computer telling the bits of another computer what to do.  These computers that store all the bits provide the the content.  The ISP's maintain the wires betwteen computers to make sure that they are all connected.  Unfortnatly ISP's can slow certain programs down if they want you to suport something else.  They will also ask you to pay for something that had been free for a very long time because they feel like you owe them and they just want you to pay them.  They also tell you that if you pay you get faster internet which is not true at all!!  You actually get slower internet and the internet you had before you payed is faster than the internet after you payed.

It is important for teens to know all this because fast lanes and net neutrality are all important for us to know because we use media so much.  Fast lanes dont actually exist because the ISP's just made them up for an ecuse to get money from us.  If you want to be safe on the internet don't get anything that says you have to pay for it if it looks shady.  By that I mean if the website doesn't look legidamate or if you don't agree with their polocies than don't do it.

The reason I changed the things that I did was because I was told by my peers that there was clash between the pictures and the back round and so I changed the back round.  I included more pictures because I felt I did not have enough to talk about.  I made it symmetrical to show that they are all things that I enjoy and like.  Im in the middle of the slide to show that all the things relate to me.  For the music note I took out the picture of the Beatles because they play music and I felt that they fell into that caticory.

The reason I chose these things is because Rhett and Link are my favorite youtubers and I also love puppets so when I discovered that rhett and link had a mini series with puppets I immediately jumped to watch it.  I included the beatles for they are my favorite musical band and have formed good music as we know it.  The picture of the frisbee is included because I love playing frisbee and am currently on SLA’s ultimate team, Brodie Smith is also a role model when it comes to frisbee because he is outstanding at it.

These websites mainly talk about how best to present a presentation, how to design one, what the audience wants to see, and how much to put on each slide.

My home network starts with a Modem Router combo.  We have a fiber optic wire that connects from the modem router to Verizon.  My dads computer is connected to the modem router and everything else is connected with the wi-fi, like our phones, lap tops, and printer.
