Grand Budapest Hotel//Tim Burton style

Posted by Jesse Stevens in Reel Reading · Giknis · Y Band on Friday, June 2, 2017 at 9:42 pm
Group members: Me

Movie: Grand Budapest Hotel

The Grand Budapest Hotel is a wes anderson film that hold both literary and cinematic merit. This movie is brilliantly colorful, symmetrical and accompanied with a soundtrack that ties everything together. All of these things of course styles and methods that Wes Anderson is known for, so why not turn everything on it's head by doing something that is the complete opposite. For example give the entire film a Tim Burton makeover.
Tim burton's auteur is the dark, gloomy and strange looking characters that everyone loves because of how gothic everything looks. To me it seemed to be the perfect contrast to all of the colors seen in the grand budapest hotel. It would be interesting to see what the movie would be like with a dark tone but the contrast alone is not why I chose to recreated a scene in Tim burton's art style.
Many reviews of the movie state that this movie is a dark comedy. This basically means that it's a funny way to tell a rather tragic story in my opinion. I feel like there's no better way to convey than with Tim burton's style. All of his stories are about misunderstood characters and find ways to deliver tragic messages and storylines in a way that doesn't make them seem so bad.
With all that being said I created a storyboard using the very first scene in the movie which is the young girl leading all the way up to the author introducing the main part of the movie. When you look at the storyboard I attempted to recreated Tim Burton's famous characters where everyone has sunken eyes and large head on rather tiny bodies but that didn't quite work to well. I have to be honest even though the style seems simple there are the little details that make it work and scream "Tim Burton" .
I focused more on the people themselves rather than the background because to me the background would most likely be the same but instead the color would only range from whatever is on  he monochromatic scale. Other than the turning this live action movie into an animated one I changed nothing that has to do with the original screenplay. The one other thing I change may have been the music but that was because the music in the original movie doesn't fit with Tim Burton's auteur and I feel like eerie music is more of the route that should be taken with this one. Overall I think that if the Grand budapest hotel was redone this way then the only possible outcome would that the narrative of the story would be enriched.

storyboard is down below.

Jesse Stevens Capstone

Posted by Jesse Stevens in Capstone · Siswick/Kay · Wed on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at 3:11 pm
For the past year I have been volunteering for this non profit organization called For Pete's Sake Take a Break from Cancer. This organization provides cancer patients, their families and their caretakers a one week all expense paid trip ranging from the east coast to the caribbean. Now the reason that I feel so passionate about this is because in 2011 they sent me and my mother to Maine for a respite vacation. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer 7 years ago and her doctors recommended her to FPS and the memories that we made in Maine is something either one of us are going to forget. For that reason This capstone is my way of paying it forward and I did that in the form of attending and participating in their different events as a way of thanking them for my trip. The events ranged from taking pictures at a gaila, running games at the East norriton parade and fundraising for their big end of the year cancer walk.

For my Capstone I plan on interviewing different people within the For Pete’s Sake Cancer Respite Foundation. I want to have a good idea of the type of questions that I want to ask so that the interview will go smoothly. The website was created for documentary type questions which is something I can use to format my questions. The questions listed on the website covered the basic who, what, when, where and why but gave more in depth general questions that I can change and adapt to fit what I am talking about.

Every, Marissa. Personal Interview. Feb 7 2017.

She is a part of the staff at FPS and is also my mentor for my entire Capstone. I want to know how she got involved with For Pete Sake and how it changed her life. This interview gives a much needed view into the world of someone that works for an organization such as this one and why they are a good thing for the community and cancer patients alike.

This website basically has the bulk of my actual Capstone. This is the official website for FPS and is where one can find all of their informations whether it be about the people who work there, the travelers or the events that  they have set up throughout the year. This is where I sign up to help out at the different events and eventually donate the money that I have made from Bake sales to their 7th annual Citizens bank park arena walk.

For the same reason as the first source This gave me the much needed advice that I need to make the interviews that I conduct that much better. The 10 tips range from the type of questions, The behavioral conduct require to have a successful interview and the actual video compositions to make the interview appealing while at the same time keeping the focus on the interviewee. I plan to revisit this right before I do the interviews so that I can have these tips fresh in my mind while I set up and for my interviews.

Schankweiler, Marci. Personal Interview. Feb 7. 2017

This interview will take place at the February monthly travelers lunch brunch. She is the founder of For Pete’s Sake and it would be an amazing opportunity to interview her and get to know more about it’s history and how she feels about it moving forward as it continues to grow and become larger. I also would like to know her own personal account with Cancer and how she has dealt with that.

Sr. Stevens, Jesse. Personal Interview. Feb 4.2017

As the husband of someone who has survived cancer I would like to hear his view on the entire thing and find out how he really felt about the whole ordeal. I wanted to hear the point of view of someone that didn’t directly have cancer but had someone that close and that important have it.

Hearing his outlook gives depth to my capstone by covering all of views on cancer and cancer foundations.

Stevens, Kim. Personal Interview. Feb 4. 2017

It was important to get a view of someone that has actually survived cancer. She was also selected 5 years ago to be apart of the FPS travelers program so I get to see the recipient side of things. She even continues to help out and volunteer at the different FPS events because the vacations she was sent on affected her that much. So I want to really be able to show and relay that message.

Tammaro, Alisa. Personal Interview. jan 23. 2017

She is in charge of all of the volunteers and events that FPS have and interviewing means that I now have insight on the actual livelihood of For Pete’s Sake Cancer Respite Foundation.  Getting to know about the volunteers and how each event is carefully set up shows the thoughtfulness and careful planning that goes into each and every event, which is a lot. I also got to learn about her personal attachment to FPS and why she does what she does.

Battle Tactics In The War For Love: DECEPTION

Posted by Jesse Stevens in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at 8:02 am

The play “Taming of the shrew” contains multiple methods of courtship, but the one that seems most prevalent is the art of deception. In the play, the character of Lucentio chose the road of deception instead of honesty to try and get his woman. The 2012 movie “Think Like A Man”,  one of the main characters Dominic sets out to do the same to get the girl of his dreams, even if he doesn’t match her standards.

Dominic shares many qualities  with Lucentio  They both fell in love at first sight and both pretended to be something they weren’t in order to get closer to the girl. The only difference between the two was their  status. Lucentio was already in a position of power, and so was the woman he was after. In contrast, Dominic was considered a dreamer and didn’t really have any money to his name, but he pursued a successful business woman that made six figures.

Both of these situation lead to hilarious moments and show the audience the blur between the honesty and deception as both men attempt to woo their women. Even in modern times, it is  actually encouraged when attempting to start a relationship with someone to be evasive and cunning so you can get exactly what you want. Both of these formats suggest that in order to be with that special someone, one must use deception to get closer to the one that they love. Honesty is not enough because that alone may not get a person to the place they want to be at to make a lasting impression.

[ACT 1. SC 1., Lines: 196-198]

TRANIO "You will be schoolmaster And undertake the teaching of the maid: That's your device"

Lucentio and tranio begun to hatch their plan to dress lucentio as a schoolmaster while tranio impersonates lucentio so that the real lucentio could get closer to bianca and make her fall in love with him without her father or the other suitors knowing.  Notice the underhandedness of this move just so Lucentio could get closer to bianca. He went as far as to disguised himself as another just for the chance to be alone with bianca. Granted there weren’t many options in lucentio’s case as he had to compete with the other suitors. He even got his friend involved with the lie by having tranio dress up as him so no one would know that the real Lucentio was missing. In this case Dominic from “Think Like A Man” wasn’t far off from what Lucentio did in “Shrew”.Screenshot 2016-04-17 at 11.36.58 PM.png

illusion Dom.png

Dom’s manager told him to work valet and get this rich man’s car for him. Long story short he came back with the car and lauren was outside getting in her car, when she saw him she thought that the car was his. Dom took advantage of this and stayed in the other man’s car and drove off to follow lauren to ask her on a date. The defining moment was when Dominic decided to stay in the car. He knew that it wasn’t his car but lauren didn’t and he used that to his advantage. Since he went along with what she believed to become so rich man that he was not he actually got closer to lauren. In both situations Dom and Lucentio felt as though being deceitful and putting up facades were the quickest ways to get closer to a woman. Also take into account that the two happening hundreds of years apart which leaves one to infer that men having been using this tactic for years. This also means that deep down people actually believe that it’s socially acceptable to lie in this sort of capacity.

[ACT 3. SC.1, Lines: 33-39]

Lucentio “HIc ibat, as I told you before, Simois, I am Lucentio, hic est, son unto Vincentio of Pisa. [Sigeia] tellus, disgusted thus to get your love, Hic steterat, and that “lucentio” that comes a-wooing…”

This takes place some time after Tranio became lucentio and lucentio took the role as cambio, Bianca’s latin teacher. He takes this time to try and get closer to bianca by telling her that he is really lucentio and that he loves her and did this to be with. Previously stated both Lucentio and Dom had succeeded through deception to get closer to their love. Lucentio felt as though he was close enough to reveal his true identity and even if she doesn’t reciprocate the feeling immediately he got what he wanted and that was to be closer.  Dominic however chose to stay masked by the illusion he created to get what he wanted.

Screenshot 2016-04-17 at 11.45.48 PM.png

Dominic and Lauren are on their first date and Lauren asks Dom what he does for a living. Domini lies and states that he is a high class chef in between jobs. This made Lauren pry even further until Dominic began to talk about his dream to have his own restaurant. Dom then apologized because they agreed to stop talking about work but Lauren interrupts him and states that what he said was not work but a dream and she liked to talk about dream. After this exchange you could see that they had become closer. Even if the facade that he put about being a high grade chef was false the dream he shared was true. See the his lie was needed to get close enough to the one he love just so he could show her the real him at that point leaving it up to her whether or not she loved him back, much like lucentio.

If Naysayers stopped to think about it, they would realize that being deceitful and deceptive are all apart of falling in love . Yes it’s dishonest and one shouldn’t lie but it can also means that that person cares enough to try and get closer. It’s just doing so in a bad way. The main goal is to get closer to the one you love and be deceitful is fair game besides it’s been done before for a long time now.

The Whole Truth And Nothing But

Posted by Jesse Stevens in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Monday, January 11, 2016 at 12:39 pm
The whole truth and nothing but the truth
“I knew that at least a few of the stars I saw were probably gone already, collapsed into nothing. I felt like I was looking at a lie. But I didn't mind. The world makes liars of us all.”

― Kevin Powers, The Yellow Birds

“The world makes liars of us all.” Truer words have never been said. I was raised to believe that telling the truth is always the right thing, so tell me why every time that I tell the truth I’m the bad guy.  I have always carried around the title of being mean. People would ask me for my honest opinion and well...I gave just that. In fact in my middle school days I got sent to the dean for telling this girl in my class the truth. She asked me if she was pretty and I told her the full unbridled truth. Long story short I said no , well I didn’t just say no but I said not to me which was the truth. She didn’t take it too well and actually told the teacher on me. I was sent me to the dean and we had a nice long conversation. Thankfully he wasn’t going to tell my mom or dad but what he told me that I should be more considerate of other people's feelings. That bothered me for a long time as I was contemplating on how the truth wasn’t considered being considerate. I mean I could have lied and said yes she was very pretty, like everyone else around her which would have hurt her in the long run but I decided to be nice and tell her that wasn’t ideal to me at the very least. Anyway that's how my title of mean came to be and for awhile I wore it as a badge of honor. It felt like I lived in a world of liars who would rather secretly hurt people than be truthful, so I didn't care.

I’m the one who looks like the jerk who’s out to hurt people’s feelings. What I’ve noticed is that this world is a place where you are taught one thing but everyone preaches the other. Where people say you should be 100% with somebody, but said person then scolds you for being too honest. This has been the story of my life For as long as I can remember, I’ve told the truth and either got sideways glances or shocked faces, like people couldn’t believe that I just said what I had said. I can say this though, my experiences have all been real eye openers for me. I’ve gotten to see how people act in different situations and each time I’ve noticed one thing they all have in common, people always lie. No matter what the reason may be; to protect, to harm or to just have an excuse in this world people lie. When I was younger I couldn't see how lying in any circumstance was a good thing. I was standing still while the world changed and moved on without me.

Way back when I was younger, my dad and I would catch the bus to my school so he could drop me off. Now to anyone else, this bus was like any other ordinary septa bus; kind of trashy, with no seats because people didn’t like sitting next to other people, and the occasional homeless person walking on asking for a free ride. However, this bus had one thing that made it more painful than any other septa bus. Our bus had a lady. I understand what you’re thinking right now, “what? Every bus has a lady on it.” That may be true, but most buses don’t have this lady. This particular lady had what I would like to call an acquired smell about her. This woman’s scent would travel all throughout the bus, assaulting anyone who dared to take a breath. No one would say anything about the smell. Everyone would just sit there quietly, pretending  not to even notice the unbearable stench. Even the bus driver ignored it! This kept up until one day when I decided to tell her. I walked up to the the lady and said, “ you smell like fish.” Everyone looked at me,shocked, but at the same time, silently pleased with what had transpired.

The lady looked angry, but with herself more so than me. She got up and got off the bus, never to return. I looked around the bus, and people were giving me thumbs up and smiling. From that point on, The bus driver even got free bus rides, but I couldn’t understand why. I did what they should’ve done in the first place. They let that poor women sit there, wrapped in the lie that she was fine, but in reality she wasn’t. Looking back I cannot place the blame her, but on the people around her. I took their silence on the matter as a lie in itself. The other passengers were attempting to dodge telling the truth in order to keep that woman from feeling hurt, but was that really helpful in the long run?  Withholding the truth from her just made it so when the truth was told, it was seen as rude and hurtful even though it is the reality of the situation. The world I live in is so afraid of the truth that people would rather lie as long as they think it keeps the other person safe.

As I grow older and hold on to the ideals of truth first in mind, the world around me is continually progressing into one where the truth becomes based on the situation and as each day goes by, I feel my mindset change into one where my truth becomes based upon each individual. I, as one who believes that the truth should be raw and uncut, find myself lying, and stating that I’m doing so in order to protect people. In english class I was given a book called the yellow birds by kevin power and at first I felt no connection but after I continued to read the book taught me valuable lessons about truth telling. What really resonated with me in said book is the main characters named Bartle. Bartle writes letters to his friends mom pretending to be him even though he had passed away. The letter packed with fallacies strung together by sentences. Bartle sent the letter under false pretenses and yet this seemed to make Murphy’s mother happy. This made me realize that even though it wasn’t the truth, it made her happy. At some point, she knew it wasn’t her son but most likely read them anyway. In this instant, unlike every other time, I’ve seen the lie actually helped in the long run. It helped Murphy’s mom settle into the fact that her son was dead and yes this was done by lying but this lie was born from good intent, even if unknowingly by Bartle.

I’ve come to terms with the whole lying thing. I still prefer the truth but I see knowing that only telling part of it is enough. I’ve realized that I’ve begun to grow accustomed to the situational truth, guess I caught up with my world at last.

How does sitting too long in school affect the students?

Posted by Jesse Stevens in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Monday, November 9, 2015 at 12:41 pm

Why must students sit still for long periods of the day? This practice is normal in schools around the world. But how does this affect the health of the student mentally and physically? This trivial thing could be the root of most of the problems that affect students today. Sitting for too long in schools causes mental and physical health problems and kids are being over-diagnosed with ADHD or other attention disorders because

6.4 million kids, ranging from the ages 6-17  are diagnosed with ADHD each year. Most of the referrals come from teachers who have students that no longer sit still and pay attention. The referrals causes kids to be put on medication to combat ADHD and other Attention deficit disorders when they may not actually need them.  Todd Elder, a man who conducted research on the number of students misdiagnosed with attention disorders stated “ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed behavioral disorder for kids in the United States, with at least 4.5 million diagnoses among children under age 18, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.”  Elder also states that 20% of the children diagnosed were misdiagnosed.

The more kids diagnosed with ADHD means more kids with medication to combat it, which  means the more money the companies that sell the meds make. The only problem is that some of those kids are misdiagnosed and therefore wrongfully medicated, which could have negative effects on that child’s life. Not to mention the meds that the children are given and the side affects that come with are  detrimental to the child health, especially when that said child  does not need the medication in the first place. Also, the symptoms for ADHD are things that people deal with all the time. Inattention? Most students procrastinate or are disorganized. Hyperactivity? Most schools are in for 7 hours a day with an average of  a 30 minute lunch. This means that most students are sitting in class most of that time. Now depending on whether or not the school has a PE class or recess there is no time to get up a move around, so expect the kids in class to want to get up and move around.

Angela Hanscom, a therapist in maryland decide to get to the root of the reason why students couldn't sit still during school and what she found out shocked her. Angela recounts her experience by stating  “I’ve been sitting for the past 90 excruciating minutes. I look down at my leg and notice it is bouncing. Great, I think to myself, now I’m fidgeting!” Angela realized that she couldn’t even sit through the same classes that students go through. She’s the example that people can’t expect  kids to sit through 90 minutes of nothing but listening when adults can not even do it. This proves that the school system must change to prevent students from damaging their maturing bodies and having been put on medication that they don't even need.

If schools stopped to think about it, they would realize that kids not paying attention or sitting still is not just linked to ADHD but also problems with the school system as well. The school system and the way they set of classes are reason enough for the many misdiagnosed with ADHD. If one wants that to stop then the school system must change.

Climate Change Monologue Project

Posted by Jesse Stevens in World History - Block - C on Sunday, October 5, 2014 at 10:10 pm
In our world history unit we were learning about the issue of climate changes. We read articles and watch videos about climate change and how we are directly connected and how we are a major reason. In these monologues I have written 3 different perspectives on climate changes. All of the characters that I have created in these monologue each live in different places of the world and thus different perspectives on climate changes.

`Takai

*talking to the other members in the shelter*

I still can’t forget what happened that day. I was so close to it. I was sitting down

just watching and listening to the sounds of the city(village) and then a huge wall of water was coming at me prepared to swallow me whole. I ran for my life and just kept running and running until I couldn’t run anymore then I felt someone pick me up and took me to safety from the wave. Once everything subsided me and everyone else who survived walk out of hiding to see the destruction that was caused. everything was leveled. I heard people calling for loved ones even though they may never get an answer. families destroyed and having no place to sleep. And oddly...I was happy. deep inside of me now everyone felt what I felt. They all now are homeless too. Now people will pass them by and feel pity for them.I’m sick to my stomach for feeling this way but deep down I’m happy. Days later the people came as you all know and they seemed so helpful and were here to the rescue

and  showing it through those big boxes that those men carried around that they were talking into... a camera I think. Things were looking up for us but that soon passed. I overheard grownups getting angry that yeah we made steps forward but we still are stuck in shelters and still had debris on the streets. everyday I kept listening to the conversations of the grown people and learned so much about our problem. The wave was called a typhoon and the reason for it wasn’t even our fault. I was confused how  this happen and not be our fault. I see youre confused too but  those same people that were here to rescue us were actually the problem in the first place.

Andrew

*talking to the board after getting fired from his job for speaking out against them*

I would like to start off with thank you for allowing me to speak to all of you today and secondly, you are all stupid cooperate jerks. sorry sorry dont kick me out(pauses)yet at least let me finish. This here plant in limerick needs to shut down. yeah gasp and be shocked as much as you want but its true. This plant is causing more problem than it’s worth. for crying out loud you cant even drive by this place without the radio in your car going fuzzy because of all the radiation, not to mention this is a outlet mall full of people outside right across the street. let me calm down. this plant cares nothing for peoples safety and i'm not talking about the workers no i’m talking about the people outside of this company.(sighs)I have a daughter you know. she’s turning 8 tomorrow. one day she came home from school one day after the events in the philippines and said to me “daddy what caused all of that”. This may sound like an easy question to answer but I only saw past the easy answer of saying the typhoon. I had to tell my daughter that people where we live caused it. that our carelessness with our pollutants and radiation caused so many people to die and many more to become homeless. All she did was look at me and walk away. Have any of you had that feeling. The feeling that you just had your entire world destroyed. The feeling of having your own daughter ashamed of you.The feeling of guilt for your actions(pauses) probably not. Anyway back to my daughters birthday do you know what she wanted for her birthday, to send a care package to a child in the philippines. Yeah. I already set everything up and the red cross told me that a boy named takai was going to receive this package and that my daughter is a saint. funny isnt it. My daughter has done more than you and you people on the board will ever do. so while you sit upon your thrones and not care about your actions I want to remember that. And lastly I am not sorry about speaking out against this company for I am only sorry that any bit of humanity has left your hearts. Thank you for listening and dont worry I saw you press the button for security so I’ll leave and dont worry about firing me because I quit.(exits the room).

Glacier

*Glacier speaking to polar bears about what's happening to the climate*

I have been around a long time. I have seen a lot throughout my years being a part of this earth...well mainly ice and water but you know what I mean.I can feel myself dying.Let me rephrase that not dying just feeling the natural order of life and changing into a different form of matter.Which wouldn’t be so bad If it wasn’t happening so soon. My children I have helped you and your generations to ever be and to ever come but I fear that I will not be around long enough to help any longer, In fact I may become the reason for your demise. I’m sorry that it has to turn out this way but I feel as though this change is inevitable. I hear my brother and sister elements cry out in pain as well. the air coughs as it’s lungs are filled with smog and radiation and the sea cries out in agony as it becomes polluted but worst of all is grandmother earth herself. Everyday she heats up and boils as the sun’s rays get trapped. This why I’m melting and I am not the only one that feels the pressure of these climate changes. sadly I fear that you will feel it too for as I melt I become one with the sea and then the sea will rise and soon try to devour you. I am so very sorry. If you wonder who could have done this it is those beings that walk upright. They know of what they are doing and yet still choose to poison their own climate. They know that their actions have caused trouble for their own kind as they ravished their own with the wrath of a typhoon And yet still continue. Do not mourn over me or resent the ones who brought this nightmare to reality I just want you to make them realized their mistakes and show them that this is their climates as well every action that they make regarding it will affect them in the future whether it be immediate or gradually but let them know this it is their climate to change be it for the better or the worse.

Philadelphia Community Youth Court

photo (5).JPG

Welcome Back for my final installment of my You And The World Project. My name is Jesse And I am a freshman soon to be sophomore back with blog post #3. Throughout my first two blogs I introduced the topic of the school to prison pipeline and then shared with you my original research which was an interview which was with the Youth court coordinator herself Mrs.Kimberly Stevens. If you missed out of any of the blogs I will have links to them at the end of this blog as well as a link to my annotated bibliography. This blog will is the after my agent of change work and is once again the final part of my YATW project.  Now on to  blog #3.

Blog Post #3

Throughout my Agent of change part of my I have done multiple things to raise awareness about my issue. The Things that I have done range from walking in the “ Pete’s Sake Take a break from Cancer” walk, to mach trials preparing us for the real deal then finally actual live cases. The walk did not only help raise money for an organization that really wants to make sure that cancer patients get the best treatment possible and have a little vacation but we also got a chance to do walk as a group and represent The philadelphia youth court and have fun while doing so. I mean I don't know many organizations that genuinely do these kind of things out the kindness of their heart and not just because of the publicity(it sounds like I contradicted myself in the first paragraph to now but the reason we went to the walk in the first place was to support one of our members that have had breast cancer and went through these program). The live trials gave us a chance to actually help teens stay in school and not end up in the streets which and they are now doing a lot better which shows that this organization is making a positive change in people lives even though we’re doing it student by student. We make people want to stay in school and also give adults hope that our generation isn't just full of people who don’t care about their future and just are rowdy kids, so that show promise for an even greater positive change.

So far I feel as though these steps to change maybe small but are effective to eradicating the school to prison pipeline. We can’t be unhappy with the type of change that allows a teen with potential another chance to be apart of the working class and be something in their lives. Going throughout my agent of change work I wanted to pursue people that would help us in our mission and understood what we understood and help us reach out. I needed people who care about youth and were upset with the current status of the school system and wanted to make a change. Those are the type of people I was pursuing.

The changes that I have made so far are small but strong changes throughout the project. I have done two live cases where I was able to help two students stay in their schools and allowed them so that they could graduated on time. I have also with the help of the rest of the youth court members we got help from the barristers association who are now 100% behind the Philadelphia youth court. After this Agent of change part I have learned that there is always someone who thinks like you and when you find fault with something to speak up and try your very hardest to achieve your goal. Also never try to do everything alone. Now there are a few things that I could have done better. I could have participated more in youth court events so that we could get morte partnerships and I could have been a little more vocal. The only things that is left to do is repeat what I have already been doing and hopefully along the way get more people on board.photo (2).JPG

I would like to thank all of you for coming along with me throughout this journey of my YATW project and thank you for taking the time to read each and every blog post that I have made. Even though I wont be making anymore blog post I will still continue to help out with PCYC and do my best to make a meaningful change. Now go out there and make a change yourself and make this generation proud!  photo.JPG

Negative Space: Drawing and Cutout

  • A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)
Negative space is the space inside a picture that is not in the main object of that picture so Its basically the rest of the paper that isn't taking up by the picture that was actually drawn.

  • B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing?
First the cut out I found the negative space by cutting out the template and and used that to trace it on another piece of paper so that all of the space surrounding the drawing becomes the negative space and then when it comes times to do the other side just reverse and what was white becomes black and what was black becomes white.
  • C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?
It allows said artist to be more precise in the drawing and that make the picture that much better.

  • D. How is negative space useful in creating art?
Well first of all like I said in the question before this it makes the art that more precise and sharp thus making the art look better but it also helps by adding a creative aspect to it all making the picture interesting to look at.

Final Perspective Drawing

Posted by Jesse Stevens in Art - Freshman - Hull - b2 on Friday, April 18, 2014 at 9:59 pm

The thing that I have learned that I did not know before was the vanishing point. I was shocked to figure out that all lines trace back to the vanishing point .

Learning about the vanishing point made my drawing better by actually making my picture look realistic and stand off the page.

I would treat my materials differently If I could do this differently. I was unorganized and sloppy which lead to my stuff being wrinkled which hindered me from being able to draw.

My advice to someone that has never drawn in one point is to make sure your lines lead back to the vanishing points perspective.

The resource that helped me the most was the resource that you gave me which was really helpful because I got the base of the project done.

The return....Blog Post #2!

Posted by Jesse Stevens in English 1 - Dunn - A on Sunday, March 2, 2014 at 8:02 pm

The names jesse for those who don’t know. In my first blog post I first introduced my topic which is the School to prison pipeline a fancy name for the process in which school’s harsh policies kick kids out of school on the the street then into jail or even straight into jail and through the criminal system. the pipeline is the reason for the many incarnations of youth even as young as ten. If you missed my first blog there is a link to it at the bottom of this blog but enough of that… on to blog number 2!

BLOG POST # 2

For my original  research I chose to do an interview with the Philadelphia Community Youth Court’s Intake coordinator Ms. Kimberly Stevens. Her job is to look over the referrals and decides whether or not the person referred should go through youth court. The results from my research is also at the bottom of the blog if you wanna go and check out her answer it’s right there. Doing this interview informed me on some of the factors that strengthen the school to prison pipeline. One of the factors is of course the schools but what I’ve learned from my interview was that It was 75% referrals that PCYC gets come from schools. It might not sound like It was a big “ah- ha” moment but allow me to delve deeper. If 75% of referrals come from schools around philly then that means that the policies in place are the reasons that students are get referred out of school and to the police or just kicked out of school period. Also This means that maybe about 20% come from the actual police and the last 5% come from youths just making a bad decision or being in the wrong place and the wrong time. Now think If PCYC wasn’t in place, All of those kids would be in jail either from school or from doing something on the street and all of them would lose their chance to live their life to the fullest.

By doing this interview it allowed me to further my understanding of the school to prison pipeline. By doing this I have now seen how people see or education system in philly. After doing this additional research I feel like I finally know enough about this topic to have an opinion on it. That opinion is that this Pipeline needs to stop for youths to truly live their lives and show that they aren’t the problem but the solution. I’ve seen and heard so many things about we get kick out because we are bad students but what people fail to remember is that we are kids and what do kids do? We make mistakes, but with the certain policies in place we are not allowed to learn from those mistakes and are quickly punished for what happened. People in high places feel as though we are the problem and give up on us but never realized that they were talking at us and not with us to fix the problem. They are so quick to say the problem when in fact we are the solution and the brighter future if they gave us a chance.

Another thing that I realized with my research is that with everyone that is one our side there are 5 on the other side already counting us out and they are winning by using the pipeline. In my first blog I said that they opened up 2 new prisons worth 400 million dollars but closed down 26 schools as well. If this wasn’t a clear sign that they already scratch out our education I don’t know what is. They rather invest in the business of incarceration than invest in our education. This is why I want to help in any way I can to break this pipeline even if I have to do it little by little.

There isn't much I’m left wondering about This issue. The only thing that could possibly come to mind is who was the first person to think that They would get more out of prisons than the youth’s education. Other than that I’m already thinking on what to do for my agent of change  part for blog post #3. Actually let me rephrase that I know what I’m going to do for my agent of change.  I will volunteer with the Philadelphia Community Youth Court(PCYC) every friday or whenever else they might need me so that I can be a change and help break this pipeline for not just mine but all of our futures. Well thats all for now look out for my big conclusion in blog #3.

Tally-ho!( That sound much cooler in my head before I typed it…. somehow?)

Photosynthesis Process

Posted by Jesse Stevens in Bio-Chem 9 - Sherif - C on Friday, December 20, 2013 at 9:46 am

We've been learning photosynthesis and respiration lately in Biochem 9. Our group did our project on photosynthesis and our group wanted to learn what was the process of photosynthesis. to start off we just wanted to cover all aspects of photosynthesis in depth but we thought that it would take less time to just learn about the process and go in depth on the key points. an important thing that we learned about photosynthesis was that not all parts of it doesn't have to be light dependent. also another important thing is that without photosynthesis we couldn't live. If my team could redo this we would work more efficiently and add a little more detail.

YATW Blog post #1; School To Prison Pipeline

Posted by Jesse Stevens in English 1 - Dunn - A on Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at 12:05 am

School To Prison PipelineThe picture depicts public education and Prison Industries as two business men and the public education is feeding the prisons students since as the small mouse states “ follow the money”.

Hey my name is Jesse Stevens and I am currently a freshman at Science Leadership Academy in Philly. For English 1 me and the rest of my peers were asked to choose an issue in the world that we cared about and create three blog post on the matter. The issue that I choose to type about is the School to prison pipeline that affecting students everywhere. This pipeline ruins lives and breaks families and needs to be stopped. In this first blog I would like to just bring this subject to your attention and draw you in so that not only I'm the one making a change but so that you the reader can too.

2 new prisons worth 400 million dollars. Now what happened to the schools and getting an education?Just like the title states this blog and the many that will come after will be about students who are pushed out of school and are being thrusted into prison as a result of the school districts negligence. Students cannot compete against the high risk testing, zero tolerance and are expelled from their schools or even drop out because of these harsh facts. Also the fact that schools are getting less funding for extra programs such as music or art and less funding for guidance counselors. Things that schools really need so that students can be successful.

This issue has great significance because It can and is happening to us.Students educations are being halted by all of the problems that the school districts are having. Since student are not being properly educated and getting kicked out of schools the future of this world is being destroyed since the kids are being sent through the criminal justice system and now have a record. With the record they can’t get a good job, get into the college they want and just overall just have a tougher life than people without a record. to add on once they get a record and can’t do any of the things I previously stated they are more likely when they get out of jail just to go right back for similar reasons that they got locked up for in the first place. Right now to me it feels like a power struggle between  Education v.s Incarceration. As you can see the significance of this issue is huge as it can dictate our future and should impact the way you think about the school district and what needs to be done.

Many students get suspended but here are a few specific statistics that explain my point further.Statistics from the American Civil Liberties Union show that:

  • Black students make up 13.6 percent of Pennsylvania's student population, but they received almost half of the out-of-school suspensions, at 48.25 percent.

  • Seventeen percent of black students were suspended at least once, a rate five times that of white students.

  • One out of every 10 Latino students were suspended at least once, one of the highest Latino suspension rates in the country.

  • Students with disabilities were almost twice as likely as other students to receive out-of-school suspensions – 11.1 percent versus 5.7 percent.

  • Black students with disabilities received OSSs at the highest rate of any group – 22 out of every 100 were suspended at least once.

These statistics are up to date and are very shocking. Not only are healthy kids are being suspended and getting put through the criminal justice system but disabled kids have a higher suspension rate! How come disabled kids are getting suspended more? They can’t help some of the things they do but thanks to certain school policies they don’t even get a chance. Beside the fact that there are more African-Americans and Latinos(so much for equality) being suspended but more importantly the ones that need a little more help in school are just getting kicked out and pushed towards the streets and eventually prison. We have to stop this but for that to happen we need to know more.Stay tune for my next two blog post so we can figure out how to break the school to prison pipeline and help students all over the world. Lets do this together. You the reader can now also be an Agent of change in your own way by getting more people to know about this.See you later!

Q2 Media Fluency

Posted by Jesse Stevens in Technology- Freshmen - Hull - b1 on Sunday, December 8, 2013 at 11:42 pm

My slide has a picture of multiple gray eggs in the back with one bright red egg up front with the two words “BE DIFFERENT” in all caps right next to it. I wanted my slide to be simple and easy to understand with just a glance since it is a visual aid. After going on and reading the Presentation Zen website I had obtained enough information to know how to make my slide better with contrast, emptiness, size, alignment and more. The red egg is in the front and with a very vivid warm red it catches anyone's eye which is why I used it. Also the red contrasts with the gray and the darker red that the text is in. I also utilized spacing and emptiness so that the slide wouldn't get crowded and so you would be able to see everything clearly. Also so that everything would take up a balanced amount of space.

Now dealing with the size I wanted to make sure that people really far away could see it with no problem. I only put those two words on the slide because the picture is enough to get my point across that its okay to be different just look at me and inspires other people to be themselves also and not follow the crowd.

Be Different
Slide reflection:

I changed the color of the  "E" in the word different to red so that it could further get the point across to be different. Also because of the advice I got from my peers during our class discussion. I also got rid of the underlining of the words and the period of the end because everyone wanted It gone so badly. Furthermore I changed the color of the words to match the gray eggs.finally i got rid of the negative space within my slide so now the words are aligned. During the discussion I've learned a lot of vocabulary and how to look at pictures and billboards in a different way. Also I learned not to use negative space between words because it's distracting to the eye. I will never look at anything the same after the class discussion and will forever look at a billboard or advertisment and think "does that follow the rule of thirds ?"
