Monisha Das Capstone

Posted by Monisha Das in Capstone - Rami - Wed on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 12:00 am

Throughout the course of my capstone I had many bake sales. When I had a sale I experimented with different things in order to see what would bring in more profit. I looked at what days of the week brings in more money as well as different products. After doing my bake sales I was able to gather numerical data. After gathering my data, I looked at the income for the day and the actual profit, which I got by subtracting the money spent from the income. At the end it was just a matter of looking at all my data and studying it to understand what was good and bad.

Outside of the bake sales, I made separate cakes. The money I raised from the bake sales went into make the outside cakes and by necessary equipments. With these I was able to experiment with different decorating techniques such as frosting, glaze, melted chocolate, and ganache. By doing the bake sales and outside projects I was able to understand my capstone from the business side as well as develop baking skills.

This is the link to my online website, Mini's Baker, which holds the description of my capstone, my data, analysis, as well as pictures of my bake sales and my outside cake projects.

Resources I used for my capstone can be found here

Food recipe and slide

Posted by Monisha Das in Science and Society - Best - Y on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at 10:05 pm

Instructions on how to make Bengali Lachcha Semai or in english Vermicelli Pudding.

This recipe is approximately for 10 people

Ingredients needed

  • ¾ gallon of Milk

  • 2 Cardamoms

  • 2 Bay leaves

  • Sugar (according to taste)

  • 1 pack of vermicelli

  • Raisins (desired amount)

  • Coconut shreds (optional and desired amount )

Tools needed

  • Stove

  • Pot

  • Bowl

  • Large spoon

Directions

  1. In a pot add milk, sugar, 2 cardamoms, and 2 bay leaves.

  2. Heat the ingredients until the milk comes to a little thick consistency which will take about half an hour

While the milk is heating you will want to start on creating the base

  1. In a bowl, line it with a pack of vermicelli

  2. On top of the vermicelli, drizzle on coconut shreds

  3. Finally, drizzle on raisins

  4. Once the milk come to a thick consistency, set it aside to let it cool for about half an hour

  5. Once the milk has cooled, pour the liquid into the bowl of vermicelli

  6. Let it sit for a few minutes and then grab a bowl and a spoon and enjoy.

Analysis of dish

This recipe contains very simple ingredients that are more whole food rather than processed foods. However, this can change depending on where someone gets the ingredients that are listed above. I believe the vermicelli that is used in this dish is processed since it was most likely made in a factory.

The milk that is in this dish is whole milk and on the label it says that it contains 8g total fat, 130 mg of sodium, 12g of total carb, 12g of sugar, 8g of protein, and 150. It also contains vitamin A 6%, vitamin C 4%, calcium 30%, and vitamin D 25%. The spices such as cardamoms and bay leaves are brought from a bengali store where the product has come from Bangladesh as well as the vermicelli. Cardamom and bay leaves are more used for flavoring rather than having health benefits.  A lot of the ingredients come from my home country, Bangladesh, meaning that is has traveled quite far before it came into my presences. I don’t think the process of the ingredients cause any harmful effects to the environment. The ingredients price value range from $1 to $5, meaning that a person can expect to pay about $10 in order to create this dish.

Overall, this dish is easy to make and does not contain that much processed ingredients.

Personal reflection

I never would have thought that we would have a unit in which we learn about food. This unit was very helpful because I now have more knowledge about organic and non-organic foods. I think that every school should provide their students with a unit like this so that the students are more aware about the foods they way. They should know where the food that is being placed of their plate comes from. If they do not know, then it is kind of like they are going to life blindly. This definitely is not a good thing because you need food in order to survive so its really important to know what you are putting into you body.

During this unit there are many things that I learned but the one thing will stick with me for ever is the TED Talk called “Teach Every Child About Food” that we watched  in class. The speaker did a experiment with children where he asked them to identify vegetables and a lot of children failed to do that. This made me realize that if a young child does not know their vegetables then what does that say about adults and their food knowledge.

Some of the biggest problems that I see in our food system is that media plays a big role in influence the mind of consumers. Companies know that people always watch T.V and this becomes their way of advertising the food they make to look better than the real product. Also there are so much of influencing people to stay be fit but on the top of that there are so many unhealthy foods that can just devour the fitness down.

Recently, I have already made changes to my food choices. Now, I tend to eat less processed food such as instant food because I understand know how much chemicals go into the products to keep it looking fresh or appealing to eat. I know processed foods tend to have a lot of sodium and high about of things in them so if I decrease those intakes I would be a much healthier person.

Food rule side

Below is the food rule side I made. For my design I kept it real simple, with just words and color grouping. I wanted my slide to be something that catches your attention and the color red seems to do that. I divide my text in black and white so that there is a pattern.

Living in Kepler but wanting Earth

Posted by Monisha Das in English 3 - Pahomov - C on Friday, June 6, 2014 at 12:34 am

It was 8 o clock. I should have asleep by now. Instead I chose to stay up and stare at my ceiling. I saw the shiny stickers of planets, dad put them on my ceiling to encourage my imagination. He said they are a part of something that is called the Milky Way Galaxy. It is probably very far from where we live since I had never heard of a place with that name in Kepler.

From a very young age, I remember my mom reading me stories about a place called Earth. She would say that Kepler is very different from Earth.

“Alec, did you know that Kepler is much closer to the sun than Earth and that it would take 20 years to go from Earth to Kepler.”

“No, mom I don’t know. I’ve never there remember, just heard about it from you.”

My father had never been to Earth either, since he grew up in Kepler.

I could hear my mom coming inside from the backyard.

“Alec?” I heard my mom call with a questioning voice from downstairs.

“He should be asleep by now.” My father replied, as he watched cosmos with my older brother, Ethan.

“Are you asleep yet?”

I did not reply. I just stayed quiet so she wouldn’t have to come upstairs to check.

“Alec?” She called again as her gentle footsteps came up the stairs.

I quickly covered myself with my blanket and pretended to be asleep as she began to open my door. I could feel her eyes staring at me from the foot of the door and knowing that I was not asleep.

“I know you are not asleep. You can’t fool me this time.”

I stayed still and didn't reply.

“Okay, fine if you're really asleep then I guess I will go back downstairs.” She closed the door.

I didn’t hear anything so I decided to come out from under my sheet. To my surprise, she was standing right next to my bed with her arms crossed. My mother had the face expression of a smile and smark combined together.

“So, I see, you’re not asleep. Alec, your five, you should be asleep by now.”

I started laughing because I knew my plan of staying up would not work anymore.

“I was thinking about when you told me the stories about Earth and all the cool things that happened out there.”

“Ah, yes the stories I told you many times about Earth. I’m guessing you want to hear another one”

I gave her a big smile and moved over so she could sit on my bed.

“Anything specific?” She asked.

I looked at the sticker of Earth on my ceiling. “Mom I know you grew up on Earth and that it must have been very fascinating for you. But you never told me why you came to Kepler or how you are connected to it. I do not know, you have always told me these stories so I kind of want to just see it for myself and know everything about it.”

“Well, then I guess its time to reintroduce your grandfather in to our lives.”

I listened carefully as my mother started to tell the story. I had a feeling that I would soon end up falling asleep, since I tend to do that when I hear stories like this.

My mother looked out my window into the dark night sky and began her story. “Your grandfather, was someone that studied the formation of things around Earth. He had always wanted to go to other planets, which was why he decided to looking into time machines or machines that could teleport you from one place to another. He would take me along to work and I would get to see the amazing picture of other planets like Earth or similar to it. I was never the child who was so well behaved like you. I would mess around my dads lab and find cool things to interact with. That curiosity of mine was good but it also got me into a big trouble. One day, I was walking around your grandfather’s lab when this beam of shiny light began to hit me in to the face. I looked around and saw that it was coming from a door that was slightly open. The perfect amount of sunlight was shining through it. I walked in and saw that there were these big machines. And then there was this one that looked a lot like a hamster ball with a chair inside. Remember I told you about hamsters and their toys”

She looked at me and I nodded in agreement. She continued.

“I looked around and saw a picture of outer space. On the image, something that looked like Earth was circled, labeled Kepler and its coordinates were written besides it. I didn’t know what to do so I decided to come back the next day to check it out. The next day, I left my dad a note saying that I had found out about Kepler and wanted to learn more. I went to the same room and inspected the machines a little more. I looked at the hamster thing really closely and then ended up walking in. As soon as I did I noticed everything turn on, I didn’t know or think that it was that touch sensitive. Inside, it had a huge keyboard and big screens. There were numbers on the screen, numbers that matched the numbers of Kepler's coordinate. There was also a chair, so I went and sat on it. I was startled when I heard a little voice greeting me with the words ‘greetings master’. I was  so frightened that my arm mistakenly hit a button. I had no clue what that button was for but then the machine started to move so I kind of figured that I activated something. Looking through its visible screen, I could see it was getting loose from the joints that it was originally tied to. I closed my eyes because I got scared and next thing I knew, I did not know if I was still on Earth or not.”

“So that must have been the first time you arrived to Kepler?” I asked curiously.

My mother was quick to respond. “Yes, at the time I did not know it was Kepler. I had thought maybe I just changed the screen of the machine but when I stepped outside I knew I was not on Earth. At first, I did not see any signs of living creatures or see anything that looked similar to my daily life on Earth. The place seemed to lack in water so I was getting very dehydrated. As days went by I become more weak. I ended up fainting one day. I woke up as I felt the touch of a wet substance on my lips. I opened my eyes and saw a floating leave that carried red liquid. I drank it and supposed that was their water. Around the leave was a shimmering figure that was very difficult to see. I looked closely and saw that shimmery figure had a face that looked a lot like the face of a male human. As years went by I became really close to him, although I could not see him completely, I liked the fact of having him near.”

I was began to get sleep but I still wanted to know more “How did grandpa feel? Did you know?” I asked.

My mothers face lost a little of its shine. “I never really found out how my father felt after I left. By now he had probably read the letter and is very upset with my actions. Who knows.”

My mother glanced over to the clock to see and the time, I glanced over after her and then looked back at her to smile about how late it had been.

“Mom, it’s about two hours past my bed time.”

“Yes, I know. This is what happens when you get me into story telling. Anyways, go to sleep and I’ll see you in the morning.”

My mom slowly walked out the room and closed the door behind her.

Five Years Ago On Earth:

For the past few years Alec’s grandfather had been working on a new plan that would allow him to send out a message to other plants, and hopefully he will get a message in return. The first planet on his list was Kepler since his daughter had gone there five years ago. He never thought his creation would lead his family into harm. He wished everyday for his daughter to be safe. He didn’t collaborated with anyone or told anyone, he did not want this message to get into the wrong hands.

It was the year 1995 on Earth. The grandfather knew it was time for him to finally sent out the message, to finds his missing daughter. He went to a lab that was in his basement, since that’s where he worked on his project so that it would remain hidden. The message is somewhat like a signal or sound wave that continuously echos and repeats the same thing. The message is “We are from Earth and we are looking to interact with other living creatures.

Fifteen years later on Kepler:

I was peacefully sleeping when I suddenly felt the touch of water on my forehead.  I quickly move from under the aim of the water. I saw that it was my younger sister trying to pour water all over me as I layed on my bed.

She looked at me with a huge smile on her face. “Wake up, Alec. Wake up. You are going to be late for your first day at the Laboratory.” She hopped on my bed and started jumping.

I smiled at her and said “You know that is so not true. With my speed I can never be late.” I got out of bed and walked into my dark bathroom. There I stared at myself, to see myself more clearly. All I saw was a shimmering figure I didn’t look like my mother or sister. They both seemed to be solid as I seemed to be in liquid form.

“ALEC!! Hurry up!” My mother yelled from downstair. “I don’t like rushing you everytime. Hurry...” Before she could get to her last word I was already standing in front of her, all ready to go.

“I love you, mom. See you, when I get home.” I said as I sped past her.

Once I got to the lab, I went to do some research about a messages being sent from one planet to another. My mom was recently telling me about a message being sent to outer space from a planet. She, herself, did some research to find out about how life may be on Earth and found out that my grandfather was the one that actually sent out the message, in search for her. I did some research and found out that a message or something to come to Kepler from Earth would take about 20 years.

The day went by pretty quick which was good because I went home right after. My mother was no where to be seen so I had to do a whole house search. I later found her in the basement near a Journal and a box. My mother looked up from the journal as I got closer.

“Oh, hey, I did not even hear or see you come in.” My mother said.

I nodded and looked every curiously at what she was doing. She was trying to cover up the journal because she saw me glancing over it.

“What’s that?” I asked as I placed my hand out to grab the book but instead she moved my hand and the book way. “Is it really that personal that I cannot know?” I went to grab a chair as my mother began to ponder the thought.

“Well, then I guess I could tell you since you are going to annoy me about it later on. In the journal are daily progress notes of my life on Kepler, everything that happens or has happened is written down in this book and my other journals. In the box is the key to where the machine is. I haven’t opened the box or even touched the key in ages. I wanted to come down now and look at it because I remember the conversation me and you had a few years ago about the machine that brought me here. I guess that you didn’t know that is was under our basement this whole time.”

I was shocked to hear that the machine had been in the basement this whole time and she was just now telling me, when I wanted to know everything about Earth and her childhood that night when I asked. She saw that I was upset about not knowing about this earlier. She tried to explain.

“I didn’t tell you this before or when you were younger, obviously because you were younger. I wanted to wait till you were older and till I found out about the message that was sent to outer space from Earth.”

“Mom, I would have really appreciate it if you told me earlier. I guess that dad already knew about this.”

“Well, yeah, he is your dad.”

I did not want to tell my mother that I was planing to use it and so I could go to Earth myself. My mother didn’t show me the machine so I decided to come back later to check it out.

It was ten o clock. By now everyone was already asleep. I could easily get away with things. I walked to the basement and got the key from the box and went to look around. I didn’t know what I was exactly looking for, instead that its big and looks like a hamster ball. I saw a picture of my sister on a shelf with nothing else on it, so I went to pick it up when suddenly the floor under me started to fall. It was as if I was in a box. On the side was a place that said insert key. I placed the key in and the wall in front of me opened half and there it was the machine was sitting right under our house and basement. I walked through the open doors of the machine and activated.

“Greetings Master.” said the voice.

It greeted me just like it had once greeted my mother. I saw many different buttons. There was a button that was labeled return. I had a feeling that, that would take me back to Earth so I went ahead and pressed it. The machine didn’t shake the ground like my mother had said. Around the machine everything became dark and then it became bright and everything turned off. I stepped out the machine thinking that I was still in Kepler but to my surprise I was not because the sky was much brighter and the water was not red but clear. I must have been on Earth. I started walked around but then ended up seeing two solid figures talking to eachother. I walked over towards them in curiosity but they didn’t seem to notice me. I figured they were just too busy talking to each other to notice me. I saw another group and walked up to them as well but nothing happened. I tried again and again no one said anything. I couldn’t understand what happened until, I got to a tall glass building and saw that I could barely see myself. I had forgotten that Kepler was much darker than Earth, which is why everyone could see each other much better. My mother never told me this would happen.

I was getting pretty hungry, so I had to find myself some food. I saw a place with many people sitting around and talking so I decided to walk in and hopefully find something. Nothing seemed like food I was familiar with. I decided to get anything and walked out. I never thought I would feel this much out of place. I guess this is how my mother felt when she arrived to Kepler. I decided to go back to the machine. At my arriving I saw something flashing on the screen, that said open. I pressed enter on the keyboard and the words “We are from Earth and we are looking to interact with other living creatures,” came from the machine. I figured that was the message that was sent out to outer space.

It would have been really interesting to meet my grandfather and say that his daughter is in good hand but what if he reacts to me and is completely frightened. Thinking of all the bad things that could happen made me think of going back to Kepler, a place where I would fit in without complication. I decided to go back and pretend as if nothing ever happened.

At my arrival my mom was surprised to find out that I went to Earth. However, she later understood when I explained everything. For most parts Earth was interesting but overall, I don’t think Earth is for me.

Wanting what's best for my mom

Posted by Monisha Das in English 3 - Pahomov - C on Friday, March 21, 2014 at 1:19 pm

There are many times in life when we want something to happen, however someone else might not feel the same way. It could be for a good change or a good reason but perhaps that someones does not want to be a part of it. This brings up the topic of my family and I wanting my mother to take better care of her health.

For the past three years my mother has been taking poor care of her health. She does not sleep or eat right, which are two important things human beings need in order to survive. In the past years, she has also gone through a lot, which could be some of the elements that were reflecting on to her health. My mother is a very hard working woman, my family and I really appreciate all that she has done but we just wished that she would take better care of her health. Knowing that she was not taking good care of herself had a huge impact on my family. We tried to help her to eat and get to sleep on time but she did not really take our help into consideration, which frustrated my family member because she was not willing to bring change into her health.

Everyday she has a very early start meaning that she should also be going to sleep early, in order to get the right amount of sleep, but she does not. She wakes up every morning, bright and early, before her sleeping childrens. Since I leave the house before everyone else, she comes and wakes me up first and then heads downstairs to prepare breakfast for everyone. After I eat breakfast, I head out to leave but I do not leave alone, my mother actually gets ready to drop me off to the trainstation. At that time I was younger but I was able to walk myself to the trainstation. I would tell her that “you don’t have to go,” but she would refuse to listen and would come along. I did not mind this because this was one of her ways to show that she cared about me. But I did not want her to come along because I wanted her to get some more sleep and eat since she had not eaten breakfast with me. Once I had told her “mom, I am old enough to walk myself to the trainstation, you do not have to come with.” My mother took that a bit too personally and got upset about it. The next day when she would want to come along again, I would say nothing. I tried this many time and I always got the same reaction. Then I realized that there was no point in saying or doing anything because she would just do things her way.

Everyone in my house has a different schedule, we all leave and arrive at different times, the only time we are all together is after 11pm. My mother refuses to go to sleep before her children. A lot of times I have to stay up really late to finish school work and she would decide to stay up with me until I finish. Once when she was staying up with me, I asked her to go to bed since she gets up before me but like before she would not listen. At home I alternate between two different languages, Bangla and English, I speak Bangla with my parents. One day my older siblings, Laxmi and Mithun, told me that I tend to have a harsh tone in that Bangla. I had no clue what they meant because when I speak, I can not tell the difference between my tone being harsh and not harsh. I also do not mean to do it, it just ends up happening and sometimes my mother takes that personally and ends up getting mad. At that point it is really difficult to make her understand my point of view.

My mother says that she does not have the time in her schedule to get enough sleep or eat well. This made me sad because it showed everything she does for us, does not give her time to do things for herself. One day when my siblings and I were in the kitchen my mother was repeatedly telling us to eat. My brother, Mithun, told her “mom, you constantly keep telling us to eat and take care of ourselves but why don’t you do the same.” My mother was busy cooking so she responded “then who is going to do all my work.” She does a lot for our family and she does not want to give my siblings and I responsibilities because she thinks that it would be pressuring us. When in reality we actually wanted to help out because her doing so much was affecting her not being able to take care of herself. If we had more to do then perhaps she would not have so much to do and would have more time to take better care of herself.

Everytime I or anyone in the family tried to make a change in her health, she would not pay it any mind and that would make us really mad. We showed her that we cared but she just stuck to doing things in her same way. Then I think what did I do wrong? Did she think that I did not care or is it that she did not want to me to care? Whatever the case it got me really angry. But I learned to control what I would say to her, because first it probably would not matter and second she would probably mind. There was obviously something wrong, but I just did not know what it was; that made it hard to help change her health. Maybe its the fact that human being do not have the ability to make other do what they want, even if it is for a good cause.

Overtime we all realized that this was, obviously, something we could not change overnight so why not take baby steps and see where they led us. To make things a bit easier for my mother, my siblings started do more around the house; my mother still did not allow me to get involved. Wanting to change my mother’s health is still possible, however the results would come in a slow pace. I have learned that when someone else is involved in the change I want to make, I can’t force it upon them that I have to wait and be patient.

Shrew's Playbook

Posted by Monisha Das in English 3 - Pahomov - C on Monday, December 9, 2013 at 2:43 pm

Shrew’s Playbook

Comparing “Taming of the Shrew” to “The Silver Linings Playbook”

William Shakespeare wrote many amazing plays, one of which is The Taming Of The Shrew. To of the many main characters are Katherine and Petruchio. Many, many years after the play a movie was made by David O. Russell called The Silver Linings Playbook. Main characters in the movie are Pat and Tiffany.

In Shrew, Katherine is Petruchio’s lover who goes out of his way to win her but Katherine acts as if she wants nothing to do with him. In Silver Linings Playbook, the Tiffany also sets out to win her love, however she is more open to Pat, who actually wants to get back with his ex-wife

Katherine and Tiffany have the same target in both stories but strategies used are quite different. Tiffany wants someone that actually wants someone else, this causes Tiffany to use different strategies to lure in her loved one. The two conditions show how the tactics used to lure someone have changed over the years. This reflects that the tactics used by women have gotten more efficient to the point where they are standing up for their love.

“Too light for such a swain as you to catch,”

“And yet as heavy as my weight should be.”

Act 2, Scene 1, Lines 215-216

Petruchio had desired to marry Katherine as soon he found out that she is the oldest daughter of the wealthiest men in Padua, Baptista. Petruchio goes to Baptista's to lay out his proposal, the father agrees, only if Petruchio can make Katherine to love him as well. Petruchio then goes to meet Katherine and the two seem to have a bad start.

Katherine speaks to Petruchio but her replies are very sharp. The quote above is from Katherine and Petruchio’s met. Katherine means that she is too quick for such an awkward person as Petruchio to catch her but that she is the right weight for someone else. Her comment was suppose to push Petruchio away but it made Petruchio come to her more. This seems to be Katherine’s way of getting Petruchio because the more she acts as to not wanting anything to do with Petruchio the more it lures him into wanting Katherine.

The act of pretending to not like the opposite sex doesn’t seem to work years later in The Silver Lining Playbook. The movie shows that the female is more eager to show their love to the person they love.

Screen Shot 2013-12-05 at 9.07.11 PM
Screen Shot 2013-12-05 at 9.07.11 PM

In The Silver Lining Playbook, Tiffany is a widow and a recovering drug addict. She falls in love with Ted, who was just released from a mental health facility back into his parents house. The two meet over dinner at Tiffany’s sisters house, where Pat gets to know more about Tiffany. She later feels tired and asks Pat to walk her home. When they arrive in front of her house Tiffany right away says that Pat can have sex with her. Pat is stunted by her reply because all he wants is to have a friendly relationship with his wife. This shows that female are now more willing and more open to the mind of men.

Would Katherine had never seen him, though!

Act 3, Scene 2, Line 26

After Petruchio’s efforts to get Katherine, he finally gets to marry her. On the wedding day Katherine says the quote above. This quote says Katherine wishes that she had never met Petruchio. This again shows that she doesn’t want anything to do with him.

In the movie Tiffany and Pat start to understand each other more and become more friendly. Pat decides to write a letter to his ex-wife explaining what is happening in his life. However, Pat can not give the letter to his wife because of his restraining order. Tiffany sees this as a change to see pat more and use it to her benefit.

Screen Shot 2013-12-05 at 11.07.54 PM
Screen Shot 2013-12-05 at 11.07.54 PM

Tiffany agrees to give the letter to his wife only if he enter a dance competition with her because her husband couldn’t. Pat aggres and this gives tiffany the opportunity to spend more time and be much closer to Pat. Tiffany uses the strategy of doing something and getting something in return to get Pat closer to her. This is similar and different to the way Katherine tries to win Petruchio. They both are trying to win someone just in opposite ways. Katherine’s strategy is to act as if she doesn’t want Petruchio and Tiffany’s strategy is to be more open and do things for Pat.

Over the years females behavior and tactics used to win their loved ones have changed. Before they were too shy and careful to say the way they truly felt about someone but now females stand up to the person they love and are less cautious.

Humanities Find Portfolio 2013

Posted by Monisha Das in English 2 - Block on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 1:59 pm

Do you remember that first time you did something outside of your comfort zone? That time when you probably thought, “What am I doing here”? Or that time when you thought, “Hey, that wasn’t that bad’? Ever had those feelings, well if you did than you and I already have something in common.

At first I never knew stepping out of my comfort zone would make me feel like  a new person. It allows me to have more exposure to the world around me and understand everything much better. It also made me feel really accomplished. This year in Mr. Blocks English and History class I have crossed many comfort zones. Those comfort zones have created originality, which has pushed me beyond my personal boundaries. Also by challenging myself, I am bettering myself.

I remember writing a description of an artwork. I was told to look at a piece of artwork and describe every detail of it. I picked a picture of Radha and Krishna; I had no idea where to start, but I had to start somewhere. Now that I look back at my work I realize that I could have given the artwork a totally different meaning and that I should have been more creative. But I didn’t do that I just described it the way I saw it. That was the first step to writing my descriptive essay, in the essay I described things much better. “I looked as the sweats from his hair slowly moved down his forehead, to his cheeks and then one by one dripped down to the carpet floor,” in this slowed down the action and used more detail.

A while after that we learned about how much language can really affect your everyday life. I wrote a language autobiography describing how different languages, I know, play a key role in who I am. Doing this allowed me to create something original with the way I speak. It allowed me to take three different languages I speak and turn them into one amazing piece of writing. “Language has such a big role in my life, how knowing three different languages has it advantages and disadvantages.” By writing about how language impacts my life it pushed my personal boundaries to make me more comfortable.

We read many books in both English and History from that I created a Prezi about how reading has changed my life. At first Prezi was very complicated for me, it was a new website that I was not familiar with. But I challenged myself to step out of my comfort zone and create something original. In the Prezi I wrote “Reading is an advantage for me. Reading takes me to places I have never been before.” By doing new things it made me realize that I am capable of doing more then things I‘m use to doing in my everyday life.

There are also other assignments that made me take the next step. Creating a museum exhibit gave me a huge change to be really creative. And doing everyday journal entries also helped me step out of my comfortable zone. Two majors one that really connect to me are English Journal 8 and History Journal 4. The last assignment that I believe has really given me the opportunity to push my limits is the the Hidden City assignment. I never thought I would be taking a normal alleyway and create it into an artwork.

Monisha's Q4 artwork

This quater I did artworks from Drawspace, again. This time it was focused more on details and dogs. With that I also did a outside art project, which is a collage about "Hero". I picked music as my hero and made a collage based on that.

History Journal 4:
Janitor:
Janitor sick of cleaning up!
It was a crazy Wednesday morning and it gets even more crazier. Mr.Block, history teacher at high school science Leadership Academy, was teaching his class. I was sitting at the lunch room as I suddenly hear my name being called by the loud speaker. I was told to go to the office, from their they send me to Mr.Block's History class. I rushed to see what happened, hoping to not clean up a mess. I had spoken to soon! I walked through the door and see this egg that lays their on the floor.

English Journal 8:
Write a made up story about fall.

We sat outside on the porch. Looked as the rain slowly fell from the sky. I got up walked to the store and I turned around and someone was following me, he walked with two black dogs. He was looking right at me with a creepy smile on his face. He wore all black the dogs growled. I started to run. I could feel him gaining on me and I looked back only to find that he was a few feet away from me. I tired to pick up speed, but I just couldn't. I eventually came to a halt and looked back again, almost positive that the man was there. Behind me was the man and his leaches. I looked down only to see that his two dogs weren't connected to the leashes I turned back around and was tacked to the ground by the dogs. They barked, growled, and bit at me and I lost all my hope. Just as I stopped resisting captain underpants saved me. *Fin*

Poems

Posted by Monisha Das on Thursday, February 21, 2013 at 7:34 pm

Unknown

Hand in hand.

Walking to a place unknown.

Complaining to not go.

But then.

Through the open door, lie

so many little faces unknown.

All sitting on a carpet, starring.

Starring as I stand besides mom.

I look up at her and into her eyes,

as my eyes start to water.

I begin to cry.

A unknown lady walked forward.

Speaks in a language so unknown.

They all speak in the language unknown.

But a language I must learn.

She looked at me, pulled me toward

the carpet but I didn't let go of mom.

She asked mom to sit on a chair

in the back of the room.

I didn't want mom to go and

leave me with these unknown people.

But mom letted go and made me understand.

The lady pulled me to sit on the carpet again.

I went and sat down next to my mom's, friend son.

The lady spoke and the children answered her questions,

as I sat there quietly being unknown.

I looked back at mom but she told me to focus.

So I did. Listened and tried to understand the lady.

She went on and on about something I didn't even know.

But then came the fun part. She gave us books with pictures

to color in and some colorful pencils. I got busy.

Then I looked back.

I didn't see my mom.

Didn't know where she was.

Then I ran to the window.

Pushed my face so close.

Looked through.

Tears rolled down my small cheeks.

And there she was, outside.

Walking away from here and

leaving me in a place unknown.

Do's and Don'ts of being me

Do go to school and get a really good education; so you can succeed in life.

Don't get below A's in report cards.

Do the right things.

Don't do the wrong things.

Do think before you say something.

Don't say and then think.

Do dress yourself in a nice way.

Don't dress this way.

Do make friends at school.

Don't talk to boys because we won't let you have him.

Do tell boys that you can't love them because your different.

Don't love someone out of your own race or religion.

Do listen to your family and have them first before falling for another.

Don't love any other men besides the one your family picks for you.

Do have a nice heart.

Don't build up a cruel heart.

Do smile everyday.

Don't make mistakes or break rules.

Do listen to your heart and have fun.

Don't forget to life

WITH ALL THESE DO'S AND DON'TS HOW DO YOU EXPECT ME TO FOLLOW THEM ALL AND NOT BREAK RULES!!

Part Of My Life
Writing assignment:

 The instructor said,

Go home and write

a page tonight.

And let that page come out of you ---

Then, it will be true.

I'm sit here thinking, wondering how to fill up this page.

I'm a girl who's fifteen, born in Bangladesh but now living in Philly.

My parents moved here so my older siblings and I

could get a better education and succeed in life.

I went to Charles R. Drew and now in SLA.

Along the way I've made so many friends that have

changed my life in so many ways. Out of all my

friends there is one that completes my life every

second that I'm alive and means the world to me.

I can never thank them enough.

But for now I'll sit here and write:

On this path of life I have always had

ups and down but it hasn't all been bad.

I've had those crazy mood swings. I'll be

happy one second then maybe mad,

and then at night I might end up crying.

Call me crazy but cryings maybe the only

way I get my crazy fillings out. People

barley know about this because I hold it in

and stay strong. Their is one person

in my life that knows all their is to know

about me and like I said I'll never be able

to thank them enough.

From the outside I'm the type of girl thats

so happy, always telling jokes, smiling, laughing

and having the time of my life. Most of the time

I am that girl in every way but sometimes

deep inside I'm dying, my heart's broken

but not bleeding. I'm tired of crazy drama

but never of life because I have so much

planned for it. I act like everything is perfect

so for most I am one of the happiest girl they know.

And Some think that I have no problem and that my

life is completely perfect. I don't mind that at all because

I know whatever has happened in my past has made

me the girl I am now.

Someone has to really get to know me well enough,

in order to know the truths, before they can

know me and all that is hidden about me from the world.

And this is my paper for English B.

My arts

Hi, my name is Monisha. I am a sophomore at Science Leadership Academy. I have taken art all throughout middle school. This is my second year of taking art at SLA.

This quarter in Art class we had a option to choice wether we wanted to pick something of our own to do or follow the curriculum that Ms. Hull has assigned for us from the website Drawspace. At first I wanted to do something on my own but then I did her curriculum because I knew that was going to be easier for me. I did a few of the art works in class but mostly all of them were done when I was home. This unit was about learning to see, drawing with lines, Squirkling, perspective and hatching. I didn't color my drawing, so they are simply just Black and white. Anyway, enjoy.

One Path, Two Roads

Posted by Monisha Das in English 2 - Block on Friday, January 25, 2013 at 4:00 am
For the second quarter, in Mr.Blocks class, we focused a lot on how we are connected to language and how language plays a role in our life. By doing this project I learned that languages has played a huge in my life since I moved to American. In the story below you will read the longer version of how language has such a big role in my life, how knowing three different languages has it advantages and disadvantages.
One Path, Two Roads

My family and I live in America. A place that is mixed with so much. We’ve been here in America for about 11 years now. I’m fifteen but until a few days ago the thought about language never overcame me.

Everyone in my family knows about 3 different languages although we all don’t know the equal amount of each language. I am fluent in three languages, English, Bangla, and Hindi. My family’s birth language is Bangla.

My siblings and I mostly speak English when we’re all together so it gets hard for our parents to understand us since they aren’t that good at it. My father is better at Hindi than he is in English. My mom on the other hand understands my siblings and me a little when we speak in English but not much. Her understanding of English has become much better now than before. My mom uses context clues to figure out other words she may know, which I really like about her.

At age 5 when we came to America I began to learn English and Hindi, which became my second and third language. My siblings also learned English, as well as Hindi, but since I learned English at a younger age I became more fluent at it.

Although speaking three different languages for me has it great advantages it also has its disadvantages. Sometimes that causes a communication barrier between my siblings and my parents because they don’t understand English that well.

I remember it was October 2010, and around 6:30. I was sitting in the squash classroom, which was in the basement of Drexel. There I was waiting for my mom to come so we could have a conference about me playing squash and about my report card from school. I waited in there for a while and then saw her. She came in through the open doors, looking around not knowing any of the students but a few of the staffs. Then I went to her and we both sat down.

Katie, the academic director, and Brett, the squash director of SquashSmarts, told us to wait until the students leave so we could have the conference. We waited and watched as the students left the room to go home. And then they both came over, sat down, and we started speaking.

Katie said, "Monisha has been doing great in both school and squash." I translate what Katie said to my mom because I was older, knew more English, so my siblings didn’t have to do it anymore.

"Ami onake valo korchi schoole ar squashe" I told my mom.

My mom said "O, valo tho" She was happy to hear that I was doing good in both squash and school.

I told them that my mom said “Oh, that’s good.” We were going back and forth like this for a while. And then I saw Brett looking at the way my mom and I were speaking.

Brett looked at me and said "It amazing how quickly you can transition from one language to another, with no problem. One second you're speaking English and then the other you're speaking Bangla. I’ve never seen this side of you." Brett and Katie both knew that I knew English and Bangla but they never heard me use the languages back to back. I smiled at him and then translated that to my mom who then also smiled. We continued with the conference on like that.

Since I know three languages sometimes I combine them together and then speak. I mostly do that when there are some Bengali or Indian food that I don’t know how to say in English because they are so different or me just randomly speaking in two languages.

Just the other day my best friend, Sabrina, came over to see me, it had been a year since we last saw each other even though we live right around the block. My sister, her and me sat on the carpet and played a board game called Ludo; its really fun if you play the Bengali way.

“No etha cheating, etha fair na. Choir.” I yelled at Sabrina.

“Na tuih dakohos nai” She yelled back to me.

“Okay, whatever. Game continue kor.” My sister said to the both of us.

We finished the game. Then when Sabrina was about to leave she just said a random sentence using English, Bangla, Hindi and Spanish, although we’re not that good at Spanish.

At those two times and many others, I didn’t realized how much language played a role in my life, making me who I am or even showing people how educated I am. The way I spoke gave people the first taste of who I am.

This is my sugar skull.
During Mexican holiday of the dead sugar skulls are used to decorate gravestones and altars. The skulls are actually made out of sugar but in art class we used plaster to make our sugar skulls.

I left my sugar skull with out a design. Theres no design on the skull because to me it symbolized something else by just being blank. I had my sister put on the mask.I thought that if there is suppose to be scary or around gravestones, then I should just keep it blank because it would look more scary.

The art teacher explained and then left a box of plaster out. Then I took a few home and asked my sister is i could make plaster her face, she said yes. So I first had her put a lot of vaseline on her face, so the plaster wouldn't stick to her face and would be easy to take off. Then I began to put the plaster pieces on her face and then rub them. I was almost done but then she didn't feel good so she told me to take it off. After I was done After I was done I looked at it and found the deeper meaning.

Keystone Pipeline Monologues

Posted by Monisha Das in World History - Block on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at 12:32 am
Introduction:

In the past few weeks, in my history class, I have been researching about the Keystone XL Pipeline. With our research we were told to create three monologues from different perspectives and make a video of one of the monologues. My first monologue was from the oils point of view. Its shows how the oil actually wants the pipeline production to happen and that the oli is really excited about it. My second monologue is from the point of view of mother earth. She shows how the Pipeline is hurting her badly. And lastly my third monologue is from the point of view of a farmer in Nebraska. It shows how the pipeline production will affect the Ogallala aquifer and that this should not happen in Nebraska. I did my video from the farmers point of view. Enjoy.

First Monologue: Life as oil.

(The actor is lying down, in a dark room, which will be the pipe. The actor should be wear all black, which will look like the color of oil.)
(Should be happy and smiley) This is such a great idea.
(Shout it out) I wish those moving things up there could hear me. Hey pipe, what do you think about this? Are you even listening to me?
(Happy and calm) Anyway, I’m just amazed by the transformation I went through. I was first under Canada’s Boreal forest as tar sand, now as oil and then will be formed to be transportation fuel. When I am brought it will be cheap and reliable energy. While they are building this, they get more jobs that help them earn money to buy me. They also need money to buy you pipe.
(Really, really happy) Just thinking about it makes me so happy. I get to help those that need me. I get used for so many things all the time.
(Has a straight face and feels a bit bad) I might have done some harm around here, such as the extraction and production of this causes three times more carbon dioxide than average oil consumptions in United States. But there is a good side to all this and I’m being used for so many good things. I get to make those things up there happy and help them. (Smiles and fades away)

Second Monologue: Stop killing me!!!!

(Sounds of machines and drillers) This whole Tar sand production is killing me! All the carbon dioxide is affecting the air in which the people breathe in. This high amount of carbon dioxide is making it harder to get the sunlight, from you sun. The project is also affecting the personal areas of the people’s homes.
(Calm) If this continues to happen it will affect even more things and put me in real danger. I might not be alive anymore for these people to live on me.
(It begins to rain) If only the creators of this project would understand that.
(Still raining) It might be helping in one-way such as transportation, food, running people’s homes and other stuff. But this is harming in many other ways such as global warming, polluting the air and leaking into the water. There are better ways in which they can get oil. I just think they should not continue on with this.
(Shouts out, which is sound of thunder) And sun, I think you should be on my side and give me some support.

Third Monologue: STOP THIS!!!

(The background should seem like a farm or could just be sitting in a room.)
(Seem sad) I am a farmer in Nebraska. Home to one of the largest aquifer in the world, the Ogallala aquifer which lies here provides so much water for crops in the United States. By building the pipeline here, I think that it will destroy the resource. The Ogallala aquifer is not that deep in the ground but very close to the surface, so by having the pipeline built 4 feet deep in the ground it might actually be in the aquifer and destroy the water resource.
(Straight face) TransCanada should get their oil from a better place because Tar Sands is 16 times much worse than actual oil; it creates 3 times more Carbon Dioxide and might also have many leaks. So Tar sand oil is just dirtier than actual oil. If TransCanada builds this pipeline in Nebraska without Nebraska's agreement then it would actually be a violation of states rights. This pipeline will destroy personal properties and disturb so many landowners. TransCanada could build this somewhere else but just not here.

Experience

Posted by Monisha Das in English 2 - Block on Friday, September 28, 2012 at 10:28 am

Oh come on this can't be happening, this is suppose to be my moment. I'm suppose to be winning. Am I dreaming or is this real? How in the world did I even end up here?

I got my racquet and hopped on to a Squash court. I started to hit the ball, with my racquet, straight down the right wall and got myself ready to play squash. The ball when across the court, as I went to get it I saw my best friend. He didn’t notice that I had smiled at him. I got the ball and began to practice again. I heard the door open, I looked to see who it was, and it was him. My heart started to beat fast as I started blushing, I wondered if he noticed. He asked if he could join me, I said "Yeah". So he stepped in and closed the door.

I gave him the ball and watched as he, with great power, began to hit the ball with his left hand. He hits the ball back to me. I asked if he wants to sever, he didn’t, so I served. He hits the ball back with a great volley and ends up getting the point. Just like always I was amazed but not ready to lose. I started getting more into the game, then him, and did a few hard shots and began to get his shots.

He opened his mouth and said the words “You got way better”.

While running to hit the squash ball, I said “I know I did but I could do better”

We kept score, he was way ahead but I began to catch up. Although it wasn’t an actual game I treated it like one, we kept playing. I mistakenly took my eyes off the ball and he made his comeback, for a second I thought I was dreaming. He did his amazing power serve and I just stood there thinking, why did I do that. The game was almost finished but he was still in the lead. The game ends with me losing, we leave the court and sat down on the bench.

I was out of breath and got some water. I looked as the sweats from his hair slowly moved down his forehead, to his cheeks and then one by one dripped down to the carpet floor. “I want a rematch”.

He took a deep breath and said “Fine let's go”. I thought about how much more experienced he was and that’s probably why he won. That moment reminded me of when I won against someone less experienced than me.

We arrive to the courts, rushed to get out and get our bags.

“You're squash game starts in just a few minutes hurry up and change” my coach told me.

“Are you serious?” I dashed past my friends and others to the bathroom and got changed right away. Then I rushed to the court and found out who my opponent was. I walked into the court, as I did I felt my heart beating so fast. I didn't know if the beating was from me running or me being nervous. I mostly got nervous during match’s because I’m mostly less experienced than other squash players. I started warming up to get set on what I want to do on the match. My heart started to slow down.

My opponent walked in and we both began to warm up. We spun the racquet to see who goes first; I get the serve. All eyes were on me as they waited for my first serve, I could the pressure building up again, I missed. NO! What did i do, how could I miss the first serve? The ball goes to her and then I get the point. Okay, now its all working out, I’m back in the game and we keep playing. As we played she won the first game, I made a comeback and win the second and third.

The fourth game kicked in and we both got more serious. I could feel my heart beating fast as I took a deep breath and made a great serve. Everything was going great but then out of nowhere she won the game. With her winning this causes us to go to the fifth game.

It was about 8:45 PM and I was up since 8 AM getting things together. I was so exhausted and could really use a nap. But I had to forget about that and focus on my game and win. The game starts, she does an amazing serve but I end up getting it and win the point. The game speeds up, ties up, and then I am at the lead with the score 10, 9.

Last point, this is when my every move and shot were at risk, if I made a mistake this whole match could be hers. I got the ball, taking a deep breath I looked at where I wanted the ball to hit then at my friend, letting me know that I can do this. I looked at the ball and it felt like I was speaking to it and saying how important this point was to me. I served, she hits and on the last shot I did a drop shot and she didn’t get it.

I got the point and won the whole match. My heart wanted to scream but I waited for the right moment. In the court I shook her hand.

"Great game," I told her.

Outside the court I was welcomed with a lot of hugs from friends and coaches.

My brother said “Good job but you could have done way better”. I sat down and thought about how I was more experienced than her, which kind of gave me an advantage. Working for what you really want is better than letting it get out of reach.

After a match I always look back at the court and thought of all that happened in there. I try not to let the thought of others being more experienced than me put me down. I believe the more experienced you are in something the much better you do in it. If you really want something put your mind and everything into it and it will be yours.

My art work

Negative space: The space around an object in an image. It is also the unoccupied by the shape formed by any object. The object is usually white and the negative space would be black. In my negative space drawing I found negative space by drawing all the shapes and erasing the lines in which the intersect, which didn't really turn out that well. In the cut out I found the different layers of the tree and cut of all the pieces of the tree and then glued them on opposite sides. Negative space helps an artist start of their drawing more easily and see things more clearly. Yes, because you are seeing one drawing from two different point of view.

Music & Culture

“Keep Holding On”

The singer of this song is Avril Lavgine. I have been listening to her songs for the past few years. I don’t know much about her but I do know that her songs are really encouraging n heart throbbing. She has been singing for many years but has done a few movies. I cannot really relate to many of her songs that well, but when I first heard this song it really touched my heart and I just kept listening to it.

When I listen to this song, I forget about all the bad things that has happen in life and replace them with positive thoughts. I noticed that Lavgine sings as though she has been though the thing that happened in the songs. I like when a singer can connect to a song, this lets me know that I can connect to the song too.

What moves me about this song is the way the song flows and how she talks about holding on and never giving up. In my culture SquashSmarts, everyone has worked together to help each other and tell them to never give up. It does not matter who wins or losses but it matters that you have a good time and that you have fun. We have a great family bond that, kind of, matches with the some of the lyrics in the songs. The lyrics also show sportsmanship that we always show in practice and when we have games.

No matter what happens in my culture, we will never give up on each other and we will always be a great huge loving family.

Monisha Das Q2 MEDIA FLUENCY

Posted by Monisha Das in Technology - Hull on Monday, November 21, 2011 at 7:09 pm
While I was doing this slide I thought about how I would put all the thing about me into one slide. I did alot of other slides before I choose this one. I basically made every thing combine, I used just a few colors, I used the circuler theme to have the reader focus on the topic and then focus on the other thing, and there is repetition with color.
Who is Monisha Das copy
I changed my slide to this, so there will just be one main topic, which is "Who is Monisha Das?". I used the color scheme combination of the colors black and white. I tried to stay simple and not have to much stuff on the slide, this way it will get the message through and not have a confusion. I made these changes because my other slide looked a bit messy and had to much things going on.

Números y Teléfono

Learning number in Spanish is the same as in English. In English when you want to know how to say 27, you would say twenty-seven and in Spanish you say veintisiete. Also it is good to know how to ask or say someone's phone number. Below there is a list of
how to say numbers in Spanish and how to ask for someone's phone number

What is your phone number?
¿Cuál es tu número de teléfono?         Informal
¿Cual es su número de teléfono?           formal

It is ........
Es el
