Nadir Meeks Capstone

Posted by Nadir Meeks in Capstone - Block - Wed on Saturday, May 23, 2015 at 2:52 am
For my capstone i decided to originally host a talent show. In the beginning I had to round up talented individuals to serve as the talent for my show. I gathered singers, dancers and a little bit of everything else in between. This process showed two of SLA’s core values, research and collaboration. After I had everything in place so that the show wouldn’t suck, I needed actual permission to hold the show. I struggled with part, wanting to do everything myself I waited until the very last minute to ask teachers and Lehmann if it was ok to have the show. Sadly due to the short notice my wonderful idea of a talent show shattered once reality hit it. I had waited too long to ask for permission to host the show which made the show a liability to the school. This meant my beautiful show went bust, leaving me to do a 10 page research paper on the different way people learn to make up for it. While the talent show didn’t go a float I did learn a lot about planning and actually setting one up so that in the future I won’t make the same mistake twice.

Here's a small excerpt from my 10 page paper:

Almost always first on the three different types learners list, and who this research paper is going to be most effective for, visual learners are first on deck to talk about. Before we delve into the deep dark secrets of how a visual learner retains information best, we must know what exactly a visual learner is. A visual learner is someone who learns best by using visual stimuli, ence the name visual learner. Visual stimuli consist of books, pictures, flashcards, colors, etc. Any type of information that can be given solely through vision would considered visual stimuli. The thing that makes these learners special is, they can visualize anything and they’re pretty good at it. Visual learners learn effectively when they draw what they hear, go over flashcards, color code information, and write down and read over information and keywords over and over again. These are the type of people who you’ll usually find doodles invading the sides of their notebook. Surprisingly, according to the Social Science Research Network about 65% of the general population are considered visual learners. Which explains why over the course of our existence we’ve used pictures, drawings, symbols and any form of written literature to give information to one another. This is also something to be expected of today due to our technological advancements. Since we live in fast paced screen filled world where we are fed our favorite shows, news and advertisements through our phones, televisions and computers, there will be more visual learners in the upcoming younger generation. Thanks to this overload of information at the tips of our fingers attention spans of children have gotten shorter by at least. At a glance this might seem like a bad thing, but this tweaks the wiring in their brain so that the younger generation can pick up information faster through visual stimuli. With more and more children becoming fast paced visual learners eventually we will move away from reading long texts to a much more quicker, efficient way to teach.

Chicken Quesadillas

Posted by Nadir Meeks in Science and Society - Best - E on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at 4:46 pm

Recipe

Ingredients:

  • Whole grain all flour tortilla wraps

  • skinless chicken breast

  • whole onion

  • whole green pepper

  • mushrooms

  • 3 blend mexican cheese

  • olive oil

  • salt

  • pepper

Process

  1. Take your onion, green peppers and mushrooms and dice them up into tiny pieces

  2. In George Foreman Grill or in pan cook chicken breast until it’s safe to eat.

  3. Once cooked cut up chicken breast into small pieces.

  4. Grab a pan and cover pan with a light blanket of olive oil.

  5. Turn pan on to medium low heat and throw the tortilla wrap into pan.

  6. Take your 3 blend mexican cheese and sprinkle it until tortilla is completely covered.

  7. Take your diced cooked chicken breast pieces and put them on the layer of cheese spreading them out evenly.

  8. Take your diced vegetables and repeat step 7.

  9. Put another layer of cheese on the chicken and vegetables.

  10. Take another tortilla and put it on top.

  11. Once first layer of cheese has melted carefully flip the quesadilla so that the other side can do the same.

  12. Once both sides of cheese has melted turn off stove cut up into favored amount of slices and enjoy.

Analysis

Not only is this meal extremely tasty it is also very healthy. With the only ingredient that I think is processed is the 3 blend cheese, every other ingredient on here is completely natural. This is an easy to make meal with all natural ingredients and while none of these ingredients are organic they are still better than eating processed foods.

Now while meat is somewhat of a no-no from what I learned was poultry is the healthiest choice of meat to choose from. Chicken is an excellent source of protein and isn’t a red meat so the risk of cancer and obesity goes down my a significant margin. And since it’s not processed that adds more points to the healthy factor. Let’s look at the tortilla bread next. The tortilla bread I am using is all flour and whole wheat making it completely natural. Also thanks to it being whole wheat it’s way healthier than buying white tortilla bread which is sometimes processed to make it look white. To add a bit more health benefits to the dish I decided to add all natural vegetables . Green bell peppers are a great source of vitamin C, onions help regulate blood sugar to a safe level and mushrooms help combat chronic diseases. The 3 blend Mexican cheese is with pasteurized milk which makes it the only thing on this list thats processed. The only health benefit the cheese has is being low in cholesterol and sugars.

Reflection

I’ve learned a lot about food this unit, especially about the western diet and how it affects humans. I always knew the western diet was little worse than everyone else’s diet, but didn’t know it was worse than what I thought it to be. I had no idea some of the top leading deaths in America were diet related and it shows how bad the American diet really is. Another thing I noticed was that there are more obese people in the south than any other part of the country. This is due to the amount of meat they eat which I learned is in correlation with cancer.

Some food changes I could make would be not eating as much processed foods. Eating foods that take forever to decay can’t be good if its sitting in your stomach. Cutting back on the processed foods would probably make me healthier overall; however, I think it would be insanely hard to do this since most of the foods we eat are processed. Also whole foods tend to be much more expensive than processed foods since processed foods can be made in a factory. Once I start living on my own and buy my own food I would consider not buying as much processed foods.

Space Cowboy

Posted by Nadir Meeks in English 3 - Pahomov - C on Sunday, June 8, 2014 at 3:18 pm

“Are we there yet, we’ve been flying for hours?” said Lando.

“Relax we’re almost there. We would’ve been there already, but someone blew out one of the engines making a trip to the other side of the solar system.” grumbled Jack.

Jumping of the couch Lando said, “You’re still holding that against me? I told you I thought the bounty was 100,000 woolongs not 1000. That decimal could’ve fooled anyone. “

Pinching his eyebrows Jack says, “A grown man can’t tell the difference between a comma and decimal,” Jack throws Lando his jacket, “come on we’re about to jump out of warp space.”

Jack and Lando jump out of warp space near the now inhabited Venus, they dock their ship, the Jukebox, in at Venus’ spaceship garage and take a shuttle down to one of Venus’ most popular casino, Heavy Hitters.

“Our target is here?” asked Lando.

Jack looks around surveying all the people and says, “Yea he should be, but this place is packed more than usual so we can’t just walk in guns blazing.”

Lando smirking says, “You know that’s not my style anyway let me see his picture again,". Jack pulls out his phone and shows Lando the hologram of their target. “What’s his bio?”

Jack says, “The guy were looking for is Micky Robinson, an ex-criminal who used to work for a small organized crime group known as Neptunes. Micky got caught selling one of the galaxy’s most dangerous  drug known as blue tomale. Once he got caught he spilled the beans about his organization to save his own skin. He alone was the cause for more than 15 members arrest. You could say that the Neptunes weren't too happy about that, hence that’s why we’re here.”

“I hate dealing with rats.”

“They really want this guy he's got 15 million woolong bounty on his head.  He's probably under witness protection so don’t do anything stupid when you see him. And make sure he's alive this time please.”

Lando nods and the two of them split up and begin their search. It took them no longer than 20 minutes to find their man. He finds Paul at a poker table drunk and boasting about his winnings.

Lando calls Jack and says, “I found our boy. I could see why they put a hit on his head.”

Jack says, “ Alright stay there I’ll be there in a sec.” Lando hangs up and walks over to the table and sits next to Paul.

Paul yells, “ We got new blood over here now things are getting interesting!”

Lando smiles and says, “ Things about to get a whole lot more interesting in just a minute. So Micky Robinson you come here often? Wouldn't mind spending the rest of my days hiding here.”

“H- how did you know my name?”

“Oh I wouldn't worry about that. Right now the only thing you need to worry about is coming with me, I have a few friends who would like to have a word with you.” Lando then taps his pistol against his groin. “ And don’t get any bright ideas either wouldn't want things to get messy.”

“Who was it, was it the Neptunes? If it was just kill me now I knew I couldn't run forever. At least I spent my last few days having fun. ”

“Oh well that’s the things I blow the bounty if I blow you away.”

Paul stares at Lando. Paul then flips the table on him and starts running. Lando gets the table off of him and starts chasing Paul.

Lando calls Jack and says, “He’s on the move you see him?”

Jack sees Paul running with Lando chasing him and says, “Yeah, gonna try and cut him off, don’t lose him” Jack tries to run ahead, but is slowed down by a crowd of gamblers.

“Where the hell are you I’m losing him?”

“He didn’t pick the most spacious area to get caught.”

“Hold on I got an idea.” Lando pulls out his gun and shoots it at the ceiling. Everyone in the casino starts running for the exit.

“What was tha… you know what I don’t even want to know I’m going out the back,” said Jack.

Paul is pushed and shoved by numerous people as he tries to make his way outside. Paul makes it outside and grabs a random woman running out the casino and pulls out a gun and puts it to her head.

Paul sees Lando and yells, “Leave me alone, let me walk away and she won’t get hurt!”

Lando stops and points his gun at Paul.

“Didn't you hear me leave me alone or else I’m gonna shoot this lady!”

“That would be a real shame, but I’m not part of a charity organization sorry lady today just isn't your lucky day.”

Woman flails and screams. “You son of a bitch! I hope you go to hell! Get this man off of me!”

Paul points the gun at Lando and yells, “You cowboy scu…”

Lando shoots Paul’s gun out of his hand and shoots Paul in the shoulder. Paul lets go of the woman to tend to his wound. Jack shows up mere seconds after the confrontation and handcuffs Paul. The woman asks, “What did he mean when he called you cowboy, who are you?”

Lando says, “Just a humble bounty hunter ma’am.”

Jack and Lando walk Paul to their ship. Once inside they tie Paul to a chair and tape his mouth and put him in the storage room. They power up their ship and type in the coordinates to Triton, one of Neptune’s moons, and take the warp gate.

Jack begins to cook food while Lando takes a shower. After thirty minutes they both sit down on the couch and eat.

“What you make this time big guy,” asks Lando

Jack says “Chicken stew, we’re kinda low on chicken so there isn’t as much in it as usual.”

“Uhh Jack, there is no chicken”

“Relax it still tastes the same.”

“I don’t think that a stew without chicken would qualify as chicken stew.”

“And why doesn't it.”

“Because there is no chicken!”

"Well we start to miss out on things when you're broke."

"What happened to the 1000 woolong reward we got for that last guy?"

"That's repair money for the warp drive you broke. Just relax, once we turn this guy in we'll have enough money for all the chicken you want."

“We better I’m tired of sitting around with nothing to eat.”

“One more thing I heard what you said back there about the lady did you really mean it, did you?”

Lando scratching his head replies, “Well to tell you the truth I really don’t know. You know we can’t waste our time with every single person that gets in the way. But then again I don’t like being the cause of an innocent person’s death. I usually don’t think about it.”

“I guess I can’t blame you. Next just don’t be so convincing you had me scared for a minute there.”

Lando laughs, “You think too much about the world. You gotta learn to just go with the flow with things. It’ll solve most of your problems,” he gets up pats Jack on the shoulder and asks, “How’s our plant doing?”

Jack says, “He’s in the storage room, he might need to use the bathroom. You think you can handle that?”

Lando walks towards the storage room says, “I was never good at changing diapers so don’t be upset if he’s messy.”

Lando walks in the storage room and finds Paul asleep. He taps Paul’s cheek and says, “Hey buddy time to wake up.”

Paul wakes up and tries to talk, “Mmmmm Mmmmm.”

“Hold on someone put tape on your mouth,” says Lando as he begins to rip the tape of Paul’s mouth.

Paul screams, “You better let me you bastard! I know people, people like you’ve never seen! These guys will flip your sh…”

Lando kicks Paul in the face and makes him fall on his side. “You know you talk too much Paul,” said Lando.

Paul spits out blood laughs, “You still don’t get it, you think a guy who snuffed out most of the Neptunes would go without protection. I got the galaxies finest witness protection program coming for you. You see it’s a policy that those under the program are required to have tracking devices put under their skin. Sure I lose some privacy, but it pays off when hot shots like you try to mess with a guy like me.”

“Like I said you talk too much,” said Lando as he kicks Paul in the face again.

Lando walks out the storage room and tells Jack the news, “We might have a small problem on our hands. Turns out our guy was really under witness protection and has been giving our position to these guys once he got on the ship.”

Jack sighs and says, "Damnit why can't we just get one easy job?"

"How long do you think we have before they get here."

"If they've been tracking him since we left then not that long. Go power up the Little Lady. We’re gonna wait for them at Jupiter.”

Lando nods his head runs towards his hangar gets in his ship and powers up the Little Lady.

Lando radios Jack and says, “I’m in, open the hangar doors.”

Jack replies, “I just picked up 3 ships on the scanner they’re coming out of warp.”

Three small fighter ships appear out of thin space and barrage the Jukebox with lasers. Jack trying to maneuver the Jukebox yells, “The Jukebox is taking hits you gotta get them off of me.”

“I’m on it,” says Lando as he positions the Little Lady behind one of the attackers and fires on the it. The pilot tries to maneuver his ship to dodge Lando’s attack, but is too late. He hits his fuel tank and the ship explodes. “I think that got their attention,” says Lando.

“Don’t get too excited, you got two on your tail,” says Jack.

“I’m going to have to get a little fancy with these guys. I’m gonna try and lure them to Ganymede you to the warp gate and get out of here and I’ll catch up.”

“That’s way too dangerous Ganymede is way too populated for you to have a dogfight on. Go to one of Jupiter’s uninhabited moons.”

“Too late already I’m too close to change moons now. Worry about our bounty and get to the warp gate now!”

“I’ll wait at Triton’s space station you better make it back.”

Lando laughs, “If I didn't know any better sounds like you’re gonna miss me.”

“Don’t get ahead of yourself I just need you alive so you can pay me back the damage you did to my ship. So try not to get shot down.”

Jack takes the warp gate and starts his trip to triton. Lando and his 2 pursuers begin to enter Ganymede's atmosphere. One of his pursuers lines him up and makes an attempt to lock a missile on him. He maneuvers by turning off his engine and pulls up. He slows down dramatically causing both his pursuers to fly past him. He then flips the engine back on and lines up one of his pursuers and fires at his wing causing his plane to flip over and plummet to the moon’s surface. Lando attempts to do the same to the last pursuer, but he maneuvers just in time to dodge a fatal hit. Lando then dives down causing his last pursuer to get on his tail. He flies through one  Ganymede's canyon and shoots a missile at the top of the canyon. He then turns on the afterburners to dodge the falling debris, but his pursuer isn't so lucky and is crushed by the debris. Lando flies out the canyon and back into space and makes his trip Triton.

Jack jumps out of warp space and docks in at Triton’s space station. Jack then goes to the storage room to check on Paul and finds him crying.

Paul asks, “Why do you people do this.”

Jack shocked to see him crying says, “It’s a way of life. Don’t know what else I would do without it to tell you the truth.”

“That’s what I thought when I was part of the Neptunes. I had it all fast cars, nice clothes, the big house. Life was good, but then I met this woman about 7 years ago. It didn't make since she was different, she was innocent. She knew I was part of the Neptunes, but she never liked it when worked with them. She always begged for us to run off to some distant planet and get married. I wanted to, but I told her I couldn't. I didn't want them to find her through me so I told her to runoff on by herself.”

“So how’d you end up on Venus?”

“I found out she had a girl and that they were both on Mars. So I went there to see them. They both looked beautiful, but they were having money issues. I started dealing more and gave them almost all of it. I finally got caught and decided it was time to leave the Neptunes. I knew they weren’t going to just let me leave so I made a deal that if they let me go I’ll tell them everything I know about the Neptunes. A few of my good friends got locked up, but it was worth it. I was free and I went back to mars to go live with them. Only thing was she found a new man.”

“Wow did all that work just for her to turn around and marry a new guy.”

“She claims that I wasn't giving her enough money and that she needed him to help put food on the table. She wouldn't even let me see my daughter. So I went to Venus got drunk and decided to live the rest of my days being drunk and having fun.”

“That’s some heavy shit.”

Lando comes out of warp drive and beeps in on the radio, “I made it back how’s our plant doing.”

Jack walks to the bridge of the ship and opens the hangar door for Lando. “He’s doing alright. He uuhh told me some things kinda making second guess our decision.”

“Awww fuck he told you a sob story didn't he come on big guy don’t get soft on me. We went through a lot of trouble for this guy.”

“Ehhh I guess you’re right.”

Lando walks in and asks, “You ready.”

Jack nods.

“Alright then lets get our boy in.”

`Jack unties Paul from the chair and puts him in cuffs. Jack and Lando walk Paul off the Jukebox and take a shuttle Triton. It’s not long before their shuttle touches down.

Paul asks, “Before I die can I ask one favor?”

Jack says, “Sure what is it.”

“Can I call my daughter to see how’s she’s doing?”

Jack looks at Lando. Lando rolls his eyes and says, “Sure why not.”

He hands Paul his phone and dials the number for him. Lando and Jack wait outside the shuttle until Paul comes out.

Pauls says, “Thank you.”

Lando replies, “Time to cash you in.”

They walk to the Neptunes headquarters. One of the guards recognizes Paul and leads them to the main room.

“Mr. Corello your guest have arrived,” said the guard

The guard leaves and closes the door behind him. Corello turns around in his chair and says, “Gentlemen come in. You can call me  I see you found my old friend.”

Lando says, “Yea and we went through a lot of trouble to get him too.”

“I bet you did, but I assure you it was all worth it. 15 million woolong it was right?”

“Yep”

Corello walks over to Paul, pats him on the face and says, “And he seems to be alive and healthy. Very good I’ll have the money in your account right away.”

“Thanks. Let’s go Jack.”

“Oh no you can’t leave yet, you’re gonna miss the show. You see Paul here has done a horrible thing my organization and now he owes me a long and painful death.”

“Ehh I think I’ll pass. Not a fan of watching someone get tortured”

“Don’t like the sight of blood huh? Very well you two enjoy your trip and don’t spend the money all at once.

Lando and Jack turn around and begin to leave the room. Just as they get too the door Jack’s phone beeps.

Lando asks, “What is it?”

Jacks replies, “Got another bounty.”

“On who and how much.”

“It says 50 million woolong for leader of the Neptunes Joseph Corello, wanted dead or alive.”

Lando and Jack both turn around, pull out their pistols and point them at Corello.

Corello asks, “What the hell are you guys doing.”

“Someone just put a hefty bounty on your head and we’re about to take it,” says Lando

“You think my men are going to let you just walk out of here with me?”

“Of course not, but you’re lucky enough be wanted dead or alive.”

Jack says, “If you don’t mind Mr. Corello we’ll be taking Paul too.”

“What kind of people are you,” asks Corello.

“Just a couple of humble bounty hunters is all,” says Lando.

Little Help

Posted by Nadir Meeks in English 3 - Pahomov - C on Friday, March 21, 2014 at 9:54 am
One problem that I've noticed and am bothered by today is the racial injustice towards African Americans seen on the streets and in courts today. This is a problem that has been around for far too long and while it is well known I feel not enough is being done about it. There were some instances where people marched because of an injustice ruling, such as the Treyvon Martin case. However, a few weeks after the ruling  the controversy died down, nothing changed and other injustices continue to happen. My project is about how messed these injustices are and telling people that they have more power than they think and to rise against the racial injustices so that no one has to suffer from them again. To do this I will tell people to realize what’s going on and that there are bigger problems than having the newest phone or sneakers. I wanted to deliver this message in the form of a song because to me music is one of the best forms of self empowerment and is something I wish to pursue in life. Many musicians and artists before me have empowered people with their music and I wish to follow in their footsteps and do the same. I was going to do a cover of an already written song and rewrite the words myself to deliver the message that I discussed above. I do not think I am a singer and this is my first time recording my voice so I bless your ears. However, I do play the bass and wanted to “show off” on this project so the bass line will be provided by me. I plan to make tweeks of my own to the bass line so that it won’t be an exact copy of the bass line in the original song. If I had more time I would try to include more instruments played by real people or make a completely new song.

Look at what's happening

Trying to understand how

the freedom we once fought for isn’t there

where did it all go wrong

Cause, its time to bring injustice to an end

It doesn’t have to be like this

We can make it well

we can make change for the better, baby

With a little help

Lets start by acting out

we need to start working together, no more fighting amongst each other now

is it so hard to ask

to focus on the fight that is at hand

we can stop this racial mess

it just takes some work and a whole lot of effort

It just can't be done alone

you have more say than you think

Don't you know that

You can make change for the better, baby

With a little help

It doesn't have to be like this

we can make it well

Its time to fight like we used to

there is nothing else

'Cause we can make change for the better

With a little  help, you know

That's how you make this wrong a right, yeah

It doesn’t have to be like this

We can make it well

we can make change for the better, baby

With a little help

(Just want to let yall know this not my real voice, but don't be surprised if I'm nominated for a Grammy.)

Humanities Final Portfolio 2013

Posted by Nadir Meeks in English 2 - Block on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 1:57 pm

Throughout the year I did many projects in both my history and English class that went over very diverse topics. From making plays history to making monologues in english, I can say that this experience was worth the work. It gave me many opportunities that most people in regular high schools might not get because they have a regular curriculum. I learned many interesting things that will most likely give me an upper edge in the future.

I was never really a fan of english nor history. I always thought they both were boring and still today I find myself losing interest from time to time. However there were a few things that caught my attention throughout the year. For example one of topics that we went over that helped me stay focused was language evolves in a person. To me this means that over time your writing develops into a style of your own.

One of the many lessons that I did that is a good example of this general understanding was when we had to make our own poems. The process helped us all develop our own type of poems with their own “flow” or style. My best poem I did during that lesson was a rift poem about music.

We've fallen into a place where there is only music

A place where music arouses all of the 5 senses

You see the rhythm flow in and out of each beat

The notes crawl on your skin for your body is the measure

Each lyric has its own scent that guides you through the song

Each genre has its own taste

The spicy sensation of salsa

or the beefy taste of a bass in funk

and what you hear is a mere product of all the senses combined

Here everyone's heart beats on its own time signature

Here no one is the same only a part of the same thing

its said god made us in his own image

but in this place music is the only image

After I wrote this poem we had to analyze a famous poets poems. My poet was Allen Ginsberg and one of the poems I went over was “An Asphodel”. While I didn’t understand all of the poem I understood the important parts and was able to tell what the poem was about. The poem is in the link here.

There are different ways that language evolves in a person, especially when that person has an accent. I was able to show this when I wrote a language autobiography about the differences between west coast and east coast accents. I could relate to this well because I lived on the west coast for 7 years and developed a slight accent myself. The essay was mostly about how different accents have very different first impressions.

“Even if I had an accent I wouldn’t know what it would be useful for. In the video we watched about American accents the woman had to change her southern accent because where she lived it made her seem uneducated in the business world. However, on the contrary there was a man with a heavy Boston accent that helped him woo the ladies and intimidate other people that seemed to be a threat. This shows that just by talking people have already judged what type of person you are, how smart you are and what your capabilities are.”

However, making your own style of writing isn’t the only way to show that you’re evolving. Another way you can do this is by making a style for another person or an inanimate object. We did this when we made monologues for the Keystone pipeline. The project required us to become a person or thing that was a part of the Keystone pipeline debate. I wrote from the perspective of the tar sands talking to a worker digging the sands.

“What do i give off? Are you seriously asking me that? I mean I knew you humans were dumb, but I didn’t know you were that dumb jeez. It’s like talking to a plank of wood. Why are you working here if you don’t know what I'm going to give off, but if you haven’t heard, I am dirtier than any oil you humans have dug up. I’m guessing tar didn’t stick out to you?”

Voces Inocentes

Posted by Nadir Meeks in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Sunday, June 9, 2013 at 9:51 am

Posted by Nadir Meeks in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at 10:40 pm

Benchmark Reflection

Posted by Nadir Meeks in Geometry - Thompson on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at 3:00 pm

This project relates to the real world because people need to make a blueprint before they make a building. To do this you need to have some background knowledge in proportions. Proportions allow you to make scale drawings of bigger things that can help in many ways. With a scale drawing you could make numerous edits to something without having to worry about messing up on the real thing. This could save time and money depending on what the project is. Also since scale drawings are smaller you can share it with other people without having to make people go to a set location.

The most exciting part about this project was going outside and measuring the buildings. This was the most exciting part because we got to go outside and actually try to measure a building using different methods, which I thought was kinda cool because most people don’t get to say I measured a building today. However, the I didn’t like doing the proportions to try and get the height of the building because there were were many issues that occurred that made us have to go out and do our measurements again, which was a pain.

I learned that there are a few different ways to measure a building and that you need proportions to do so. For example there are 3 methods you could use to help find the height of a building: the mirror method, shadow method and the stick method. They all have their ups and downs but can be very helpful for making scale drawings. I also learned that google earth has tools that allow you to measure a building’s width and height. Before I just thought it was an application that people used to look at cool places they wanted to visit if they ever got out of the country, but now I see that it’s not just for that.

Crossing Boundaries

Posted by Nadir Meeks in English 2 - Block on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at 1:48 pm
The purpose of this project was to see how some of my friends deal with some of their physical boundaries and sports. I wanted to know how these boundaries limited their sports carrer and what they do to make sure they don't go over and don't hurt themselves. I also wanted to know what they would tell their children if they had a physical boundary and they wanted to do sports.

Judging Accents

Posted by Nadir Meeks in English 2 - Block on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at 10:24 am
Introduction
Accents are everywhere and everyone has one whether they like it or not. If you hear an accent that sounds weird to you they probably think the same thing about your accent. People shouldn't be so quick to judge people and their capabilities by the way they talk. My essay talks about how people viewed the way I talked and how accents can be helpful in situations.

When I was young I didn’t realize that there was a difference between a west coast or east coast accent. I never even thought that I had an accent nor did I think that people on the east coast had an accent either. However, after watching a movie about accents I realized that everyone has an accent whether they want to or not. So I want to now why don’t have an accent and how certain accents can be used to gain both advantages and disadvantages in the business and “street” world.

I was born in San Diego, California and lived there until I was about 6. I had already watched enough movies and met enough people to know that there were other people in the world that talked differently than me. I remember trying to act them out wishing I had one of those accents. When I went to school when I lived out there, there weren’t any other children with accents from what I can remember. It was either that or we all had an accent and I just couldn’t tell. I thought the way we talked was normal and that the people who spoke differently were the funny ones. I remember that even though we were still young we didn’t have a lot of slang like most of the children in Philly had. I don’t know if it had something to do with all our parents or any other outside source, but from what I can remember that is how we talked.

Just a little after I turned 6 my sisters, my mom and I moved to philly. I didn’t start school as soon as I moved here yet so I was still untouched from the types of language and accents other children spoke. The strange thing now that I think about it was that there wasn’t a noticeable difference from the way we talked. There were some slang words that I had never heard of before and some of the kids would tease me by asking if I like this or that. Other than that I don’t remember anyone ever saying that I had an accent, you talk funny or anything like that.

Later in my life people told me that I cursed and said slang words properly. I didn’t know what they meant by that. Did they mean I pronounce every single syllable in the word because to me I thought I was saying the words like everyone else. Still to this day people are saying these things to them it makes seem like I don't have street smarts and that I spend most of my time in school. It doesn't bother me a lot it just differs me from the rest of the people I hang out with. However, still to this day I have yet to have someone tell me that I have an accent.

In the video we watched it said that accents are developed when children are young. I learned most of vocabulary and phonetics while I was in San Diego. Some of it was from my parents who come from different places. My dad being from Chicago and my mom being from Philly. However, after spending 3 years going to school and being with San Diego locals you would think I would have talked differently than my parents, or at least have a mixture of the three, if that is even possible.

Even if I had an accent I wouldn’t know what it would be useful for. In the video we watched about American accents the woman had to change her southern accent because where she lived it made her seem uneducated in the business world. However, on the contrary there was a man with a heavy Boston accent that helped him woo the ladies and intimidate other people that seemed to be a threat. This shows that just by talking people have already judged what type of person you are, how smart you are and what your capabilities are. When people hear and accent they are not used to hearing they immediately label it and the people who have it weird, stupid, tough, smart, etc. With this type of bias behavior we are making it hard or too easy for other people outside of our common accent circle to achieve their goals.

Accents are everywhere and we have them whether we like it or not. You don’t sound the same as someone who lives on the west coast or anywhere else unless you’re born and raised in that area. What you may view as a normal accent or not having an accent may be viewed as something completely different to someone else. We should stop judging people by the way they speak, and let them show who they really.

Mar Adentro

Posted by Nadir Meeks on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at 7:32 pm

Posted by Nadir Meeks in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Thursday, November 15, 2012 at 10:37 am

Soy African-American, tengo piel cafe y  pelo negro y bajo.

No pienso tengo cualquier artistica rasgo.

Keystone XL Monologues

Posted by Nadir Meeks in World History - Block on Thursday, November 8, 2012 at 9:59 pm
Intro

In history class we are learning about the Keystone XL pipeline. The pipeline will be from the tar sands in Canada to southern United States. For the project we had to make monologues from different point of views on the Keystone XL project that congress is debating on. My monologues are about the effects of the tar sands on the world, why people are trying to run through with Keystone XL and how stupid we are for even trying to do this.

Fighting the Good Fight

(Character has a hippie californian accent. Occasionally will smoke throughout the show and put intense feelings into certain points)

(sits in chair and puts on radio equipment.)

“Good Morning, all you tar sand blockers. This is John Gatti here on Climate Watch Radio Show giving you the latest news on the (raises fist) fight against Keystone XL! As most of you may know we are in a global crisis. Global warming is getting worse and is affecting our climate. I don’t know about you guys but I think winter decided to come early this year and not on its own account. Mother nature is trying to tell us that what we’re doing is wrong, but the government doesn’t want to listen because they’re corrupted. Corrupted by the green stuff. I’m not talking about the weed here people.”

(Deep breath in)

“That’s some good stuff, I’m talking about the money. 800,000 gallons of oil a day, at $4 a gallon for us, the oil company is making $32,000,000 a day (Slams fist on table) and their not one even on the fields working to get it themselves! Who needs that much money if all you’re going to do is spend it on yourself and ruin the climate for everyone else. These tar sands are dirtier than any other type of oil we’ve dug up and used. Those groovy scientist who study climate change say it will be game over if we go through with this.”

“It would raise the CO2 levels by .06% which is a big dent for one country. I’m talking to you government, I’m talking to you! (deep breath in) Well you groovy tar sands blockers ive run out of time. I hope you learned something new today and I’ll be back tomorrow to give you more news. Gatti Out People!”

Grumpy Tar Sands

(character is grumpy, rude and shows a strong dislike towards humans and their dumb ideas)

“Hey you, you dumb human”

“Yea I’m talking to you, you must think you’re doing something really good for your country huh? Digging up the rest of me and watching the rest of your friends turn me into oil. Either that or you just enjoy that paycheck you’re getting.”

“Hehehe I would too if i got paid to you know shovel humans and burn them for fuel. I wonder what they would give off? (laugh)

“What do i give off? Are you seriously asking me that? I mean I knew you humans were dumb, but I didn’t know you were that dumb jeez. It’s like talking to a plank of wood. Why are you working here if you don’t know what Im going to give off, but if you haven’t heard, I am dirtier than any oil you humans have dug up. I’m guessing tar didn’t stick out to you?”

(mumbles) “dumb ass”

“You got other more important things to worry about than what I said. Like what will happen to you and all your little human friends if this goes through.”

“Don’t ask me. What do I look like a freaking book? You got the internet go home and search it up yourself. Now get out of here I don’t want your scent getting on me.”

Descriptive Essay; To Be Great

Posted by Nadir Meeks in English 2 - Block on Friday, September 28, 2012 at 2:11 pm

There are people that in life that want us to do great things. Some people think that it might take years to be even good let alone great at anything. However, there are some things that just take a little thought to be good at. I can remember my dad telling me that I needed to do something with my life. He always said that I quit everything as soon as it got hard. I didn’t want to admit it, but I knew it was true. He even went as far as calling me a loser to make me do something with my life. So I decided I wanted to prove him wrong.

By the time I had gotten that conversation I had already been doing sports so I didn’t take it to heart, knowing that my dad can be harsh sometimes. I felt that doing sports was enough for, “doing something with my life.” I had already given the guitar a try, but had given up because, sure enough, it got too hard. I knew he was right it wouldn’t do me any good if I lied to myself. So a few months after track season was over I realized that just doing sports wasn’t enough because I had nothing to do after track except for just sit around and be told to do something. I decided to give guitar one more try, but the bass caught my eye for some reason. I was swaying back and forth trying to decide which one I wanted to stick with. For guitar I thought of  all the cool crazy solos that you hear in classic rock songs that people go crazy over, but with bass I thought of all the funky songs that have sick bass riffs that you can never forget. After a few months of going back and forth between the two, I finally made up my mind and stuck with the bass.

I decided I was going to learn the bass because I loved how sweet it sounded in songs. Luckily my dad had a spare bass lying around that he didn’t use so I had something to practice on. He gave me a book and a little advice and just told me to learn. At first I thought that I couldn’t possibly learn myself because I don’t have the self discipline to practice on my own everyday. I felt as though I needed a teacher so I could have a set time each day to practice. With that mindset it wasn’t long until when it started getting hard I quit once again on the bass. After a few months of being told I was a quitter and telling myself that I was a quitter I said I didn’t want to live life like this. So I picked up the bass again and toughed out through the hard points to prove my dad wrong and because I wanted to do something good for myself. It felt good knowing that my dad noticed my improvement from when I started to now. It actually got easier the more I learned about the instrument, so easy I even started over thinking it. For example, I thought learning the note of each fret was impossibly hard. With 4 strings that each have 24 frets, give or take a few, at first glance that seems impossible, but I found out that I didn’t need to learn each individual fret and that they all went in order which accelerated my learning massively. Some other key moments of when I over thought playing bass was when I learned how scales work and chord progressions. Those two things allowed me to understand how jazz works. People also noticed that I played bass and wanted me in their band. Even though I don’t really listen to the type of music they play I still feel good that I did something all the way through to get noticed by other people that I barely even know.

Overall it feels good to have done something all the way through. It pays out in the end. Although I’m still improving on my playing, but I can at least say I know how to play an instrument without having a single doubt in mind. Not only that, but my dad is proud that I finally did something with my life. I’m proud of myself too because not many people can learn from a book on their own. Even though I’m not great yet at I’ve at least made a good start being it.

I wanted to learn how to use irony in Spanish. I was hoping that I would get a legitimate answer that would better me. However, all I got was a lengthy paragraph on how I should not learn how to use irony and that it is too complex for someone learning spanish.

Tomato Pizcadores/ Tomato Pickers

The sun beats down on us like an overseer towards its slave.

Relentless and cruel we still work under its wrath,

Some days with little water or food,

Other days with nothing but the tomatoes, buckets, earth, sky, sun and us.

We work for little pay and long hours,

Only for them to charge people more than our labor.

We could quit,

But that would run the risk of our families

And that’s too great of a risk.

For some of us would rather die in the fields then let our families starve.

Only if the people knew about this,

It would still help.

I had to change the colors of the beginning letters to make them stand out more to show that they are the notes of the instrument. I also changed the smaller letters to a brighter color so they are easily visible from far away.

Script

Nadir Meeks

I used a zoomed picture of a bass so that it only shows the body and part of the neck. Then I put what each string is in music terms such as “E” or “G”. After I named each string I then I made it so that the string say something to represent that I prefer bass. Then I put “bass” in the corner of the slide so those who don’t know what the instrument is now know. I chose to use purple for the words so that they stand out and are easily legible.
