Stephen White Capstone

Posted by Stephen Eager-White in Capstone - Echols - Wed on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 8:26 pm
For my Senior Capstone project, I chose to tutor Algebra 1. I chose this for a couple of reasons. Math is my favorite subject and it’s the easiest subject to improve in my opinion. But, my main reason was to help others enjoy math as much as I do. A lot of students don’t particularly care for math and a common reason is because they don’t feel confident in the subject. Being a student assistant teacher for Mrs. Giorgio, I saw firsthand which students were confident in their skills and which students were more quiet and just copied down what was on the board without asking clarifying questions. With access to their grades, I could also determine which students could do better.I then chose two students who I saw had a lot of potential, but needed some extra help outside of the classroom to tutor. Together, the students and I chose about 8 standards that we would focus on to help them refine their abilities. Student teaching their class during school, and tutoring the students after school, definitely helped me become more personable and a better teacher. Without any teaching background and just Mrs. Garvey as a reference, I chose to tutor the students the best way I knew how, with visual representations and practice problems. In the beginning of the year, I noticed that not a lot of the students in Mrs. Giorgio’s classroom approached me for help, but now, no one is afraid to ask for my help anymore.

Annotated Bibliography

Senior Capstone

  1. Garvey, Erin. Personal interview. 31 Jan. 2015.

Ms. Garvey is my main source because she’s my capstone mentor. Ms. Garvey is the Algebra 1 teacher for all of my students and knows their grades, work ethic, strengths and weaknesses which is helpful for me. As a math teacher, she knows what works and what doesn’t work for students. Ms. Garvey can also give me advice on how to tutor and teach the kids algebra 1 effectively. One limitation of this source is that Ms. Garvey won’t help me create any of the quizzes or notes sheets. She’s more of a consultant. But, as my mentor, I believe that Ms. Garvey will help lead me in the right direction of success with my senior project.

  1. Khan, Salman. "Khan Academy." Khan Academy. N.p., 9 Sept. 2006. Web. 27 Jan. 2015.

I selected this source because it’s one of the main math resources that I will use during my capstone. This source provides me with everything I need when it comes to math. From pre-algebra to algebra 2, Khan Academy teaches a number of lessons that I could show the students or base my lessons off of. Another thing about Khan Academy’s website that makes it useful is that it’s easily accessible online so when they’re at home, the kids will be able to study and get instructional video help while they’re at home. It will help make my job easier.

  1. Stapel, Elizabeth. "Purplemath." Purplemath. N.p., 1998. Web. 29 Jan. 2015.

I selected this source because it’s another one of the main math resources that I will use during my capstone. This source provides me with everything I need when it comes to math. From pre-algebra to algebra 2, Purple Math teaches a number of lessons that I could show the students or base my lessons off of. Another thing about Purple Math’s website that makes it useful is that it’s easily accessible online so when they’re at home, the kids will be able to study and get instructional video help while they’re at home. It will help make my job easier.

  1. Latimer, Brad. "Personal Interview." Personal interview. 31 Jan. 2015.

Mr. Latimer is another source because she’s my capstone mentor. Mr. Latimer is a math teacher for a lot of my students, including me. As a math teacher, he knows what works and what doesn’t work for students. Mr. Latimer can also give me advice on how to tutor and teach the kids algebra 1 effectively. One limitation of this source is that Mr. Latimer won’t help me create any of the quizzes or notes sheets. She’s more of a consultant. But, as my mentor, I believe that Mr. Latimer will help lead me in the right direction of success with my senior project.

  1. "Solving Systems of Equations by Substitution." Solving Systems of Equations. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015.

I selected this source because it gives detailed notes on solving systems of equations using substitution, a lesson that the students are currently learning and struggling with. This source provides important notes, practice problems, and examples of systems of equations that can help the kids before they take their standards or their retakes. This helps push the kids to achieve their goal. Unlike other students, my students will have a note sheet that they will study from for their standards.

  1. "Solving Systems of Equations in Two Variables." Math Planet -. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015.

I selected this source because it also gives detailed notes on solving systems of equations with variables, a lesson that the students are currently learning and struggling with. I know that this will probably be one of the worst standards. So when they need to take standard retakes, this source provides important notes, practice problems, and examples of systems of equations that can help the kids before they take their standards or their retakes. This helps push the kids to achieve their goal. Unlike other students, my students will have a note sheet that they will study from for their standards.

  1. Martin, Donald. "How to Study Effectively." How to Study Effectively. How to Study Effectively, 1988. Web. 29 Jan. 2015.

This source provides information studying effectively. I chose this source because it’s important that the students learn how to study if they want to improve in math. Studying and repetition is the key to perfection. If the students study effectively, they’ll pass their quizzes easily. The source gives tips on building good study habits, taking control, making it enjoyable, and generating a positive attitude. These are all important factors in creating a helpful study session. I plan to print the key points out and present it to the students the first day of tutoring. This way they get an idea on how to make the tutoring sessions successful.

  1. Xiao, Emily. "Math Test Generator - How to Make Math Test." Wondershare. N.p., 10 May 2015. Web. 29 Jan. 2015.

I selected this source for information on how to build a quiz. This is important for my capstone because I need to create quizzes to teach my students. This source is also helpful because it provides templates that I can use for my math tests. Another feature of this source is that I can even input some of my equations and put them directly on the quizzes. The quizzes will be utilized for each topic and/or lesson that we go over during the study sessions. This essential for the students to complete so they will be able to get practice outside of school. It’s also necessary to gauge how the students are learning and how much or how little they are improving since the lesson that I gave them after school.

  1. "Finding Equations of Parallel and Perpendicular Lines." Mathshell. UC Berkley & University of Nottingham, 2012. Web. 29 Jan. 2015.

In Ms. Garvey’s Algebra 1 class the students are learning about the properties/similarities/differences between the two. Their standards are approaching and it’s time for the students to start studying. Even if I can’t present the information on parallel and perpendicular lines in times for their standard quizzes, in a poll taking in class today, the majority of the students are going to sign up for retakes after the quiz. UC Berkley’s lessons on finding the equations of Parallel and Perpendicular lines are helpful for new students who aren’t proficient in finding the equations of the lines and need video/text help when I’m not there.

  1. "Reteach: Slopes of Parallel and Perpendicular Lines." Holt Algebra 1, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015.

My final course is the Holt Algebra 1 book. This book is full of lessons of algebra 1. This book covers all of algebra 1 from beginning to end. It’ll be helpful because I can use this book for the rest of the year unlike my other sources. This educational book provides, pictures, notes, and text examples that I can print out and hand out. I plan on getting examples periodically from the book to use to help teach the kids whatever algebra 1 topic I’m teaching. One limitation of this source is that I’m going to have to make a lot of photocopies since the whole book isn’t digital. If the teachers allow me to make copies everything should be fine.

Final Food Project

Posted by Stephen Eager-White in Science and Society - Best - E on Friday, January 23, 2015 at 1:57 pm
Ingredients:
2 cups of flour
1 teaspoon of baking soda
1/4 teaspoon of salt
1/2 cup of butter
3/4 brown sugar
2 eggs
2 and 1/3 cups of banana

Directions:
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, baking soda and salt. In a separate bowl, cream together butter and brown sugar. Stir in eggs and mashed bananas until well blended. Stir banana mixture into flour mixture; stir just to moisten. Pour batter into prepared loaf pan.
  3. Bake in preheated oven for 60 to 65 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into center of the loaf comes out clean. Let bread cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack.
Analysis:
Banana bread is a healthy treat. It's simple to make and a healthier alternative to banana pudding. It can be eaten for breakfast or dessert.

There wasn't a lot of sugar involved and the banana is what gave it a better taste. The only part of the food that was processed was the butter and the salt. The rest was natural. The banana bread had around 186 calories per serving, 6 g of fat, 25mg of cholesterol, 172mg of sodium, and 2g of protein. The carbs and fat will cause weight gain but also a lot lipids to fight of viruses. Carbs provide our bodies with energy for the day.

The process of starch digestion starts in our mouths, where amylase in your saliva snips the large starch molecules into sugars called glucose. As the bread moves from your mouth to your stomach and finally to your small intestine, additional amylase secreted by your pancreas digests any remaining starch molecules until only glucose remains. The protein in bread undergoes digestion in your stomach and small intestine, where stomach acid and protein-digesting enzymes cleave the protein molecules into single amino acids. The small amount of fat in bread gets digested in your small intestine, where lipase splits each fat molecule into three fatty acids and a glycerol.

The food that traveled the farthest was probably the bananas. A lot of bananas come from Latin America and it's possible that they traveled the farthest. I'm sure there were preservatives on the bananas to keep them from getting mushy. The preservatives help the banana stay ripe longer. This meal probably costs around $10. The most expensive ingredient was the bananas. Everything else was relatively cheap. I don't think there would be any negative ramifications. All of the ingredients can be purchased at any local convenience store. A lot of the products involved dairy products. Unless I had a farm with a cow or a goat. I wouldn't be able to come across these dairy products on my own.

Personal Reflection:

This unit has been focused on diet and health. With a larger focus on the Western diet, most of this unit’s purpose was to inform us about how unhealthy America’s diet is, what would make it better, the complications of an unhealthy diet, and how to prevent future health problems. Most Americans, myself included, eat an excessive amount of fatty foods. This leads to such a high level of obesity in the United States. I’m not obese but I could be healthier. When my mom used to make all of my meals I definitely ate healthier and now that I’m becoming more independent, I’ve been making bad decisions. This unit helped me realize how unhealthy my food choices are, it also increased my knowledge on what a healthy diet consists of.

One of the most helpful warmups were the ones that informed us on the definition of organic. I think that when people heard “organic” they just thought of healthy food but didn’t really know what it meant. What we learned that there are different definitions of organic. Relating to food, organic means produced or involving production without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or other artificial agents. We also learned that organic foods aren’t always healthy.

Some food changes that I could make to my diet are eating more fruit, drinking more water, adding vegetables, cutting down on sugar and unhealthy fats. This would help my heart and the rest of my body function better. I don’t think I would be able to go “cold turkey” on my old diet. I will have to ween myself off of the unhealthy meals. I’m willing to try to change to a healthy diet but if I’m constantly surrounded by bad foods and it’s all that’s given to me for school lunch, it will be hard to resist. But, it’s a change that I have to make since Spring and baseball are right around the corner.

Gladiator Wars

Posted by Stephen Eager-White in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Friday, June 6, 2014 at 12:00 pm

“Crixus! Crixus! Crixus! Crixus!” the crowd cheers.

I close my eyes as I hear the gates open, and walk towards the sunlight as the announcer says my name over the speakers.

“Get ready everyone as he approaches...the fresh, the young, the quick, the cunning...Atticus!!!!”

The fans are fired up. Yelling their tonsils out as I breathe it all in. They love me now but I know they’d love to see me in pieces by the time the match is over. I turn and look at my opponent. Crixus the Creator. He was given this name due to the way he demolishes his foes with flawless victories. His matches never last more than 5 minutes, he’s surely one of the Gladiator Gods. Standing at an opposing 6’3” with a built wrestler body that appears to have no weaknesses. I need a plan if I’m going to make it out of here alive. I circle the ring as I stare him down scrambling to find an achilles heel. I determine I can’t find one as the bell rings.

“Do not fear death,” was all I’ve been told through training. Right now, I’m pretty frightened.

“Fuck, I’m done for!” I think to myself as I make a break back to the gates.

They shut right in my face. There’s no way out. I clench the metal and press my face on the gate with my eyes closed as I pray to god and start my repentance.

Maybe he couldn’t understand me though, since I was bawling my eyes out so hard I stopped breathing for a couple of seconds.

I muttered “p-p-pl-please god forg-forgive me for all my sins,” as I broke down.

I’m cut short by the sound of moving chains and Crixus’s battle cry “Ahh!!!”.

I turn around to see Crixus swing his smart disc at my face, I immediately fell to the ground, dodging the frisbee of spikes. I scramble to my feet, gripping my flaming sword so hard my fingers began to lose their color.

“Ha, ha, ha, ha. You look scared boy! Why don’t you make this easier on both of us and just give it up. I’ll make it nice and quick.” I lift my fiery sword in it’s fighting position. “Have it your way!” Crixus charges at me at full speed. I swing my flaming sword back and forth, up and down but surely miss all of him. He laughs again as he swings his smart disc to attack.

“Get down! Dip! To the Left!” my brain tells my body as I dodge the spikes. After playing defense the whole fight I close my eyes and swing my pyro sword towards Crixus’s face as I feel myself connect. I open my eyes to see him standing there shocked. I cut his cheek and drew blood; something that’s never been done before; something that made him angry. As the crowd got louder, Crixus got angrier and charged again, this time with harder, faster, and sharper blows. Knocking me to the ground with a punch to the gut, the wind was knocked out of me. After a few seconds of laying in the dirt, I flip over onto my back and only see the outline of his body as the sun behind him blacks him out.

“Fin-ish him! Fin-ish him! Fin-ish him!” the crowd chants.

On my last plea I reach for my pyro sword and he steps on my wrist, reassuring me that this fight is over. Crixus then grabs my sword and cocks it into the air above his head, ready to strike for the kill. I stare into the sky and await for the world around me to go black. In the last couple of seconds my life flashes before me. The training sessions with my dad where he used to pull me close and apologize profusely on how this was his fault that I was in this situation, my mother’s smile, and most importantly the times I shared with Augusta. Damn, I know she misses me as much as I miss her. At that instant, I look to my soon killer and a tear rolls down my eye. It’s really over.

In the crowd I hear “Atticus! Atticus!” just as the blade is coming down.

“Atticus get up!!’ I lift my body up, look around and see my room, feel my arms and chest to make sure this is real.

“It was just a dream?...” I say to myself confused as I wipe the night sweat off my forehead.

Right then my mother barges in the room

“Atticus! Wake up! Now!”

“I’m up! I’m up mom. Chill out, no one wants to hear you yelling this early in the morning,” I mutter to myself.

“What was that?” my mom replies. I don’t respond.

As annoying as my mom is, I respect her enough to never disrespect her to her face. When I’m alone though, that’s another story.

“Good. Now go to the store and pick me up some milk, we’re going to need it for our Cream of Wheat.” she orders.

I look out my window into the city and daydream what it’s like to live down there. No one I’ve ever known has ever been downtown. Our kind isn’t allowed there. I roll off my mattress and pick up my old flip flops, throw on my dirty tank top, and slide into my dusty shorts while leaving my room. I hate it here. Calling my room modest is a stretch. I have an old hand-me-down mattress that is on the floor, a bookshelf that’s just collecting dust (what does someone like me need to read books for?) and I only have enough clothes to fill one drawer. 5 pairs of underwear, 8 pairs of socks (half of which are ripped), 3 pants, 4 shirts, and about 10 cockroaches running around my house floors. I run down the steps and kiss my mom on the cheek goodbye as she hands me $1 and I head out the door.

“Augusta! Augusta!” I scream out at the top of my lungs to her 1st floor bedroom window.

She then replies “Atticus! Shut up! I’m trying to sleep!”.

“Aw c’mon! I’ll be out here screaming all day if you don’t come out!” “Ughh fine! I’ll be down in a sec,”. There she is my best friend Augusta.  She lives across the street and we’ve been best friends our whole lives. Her dad died in a gladiator fight just like mine, which only made us grow closer. Her luck is better than mine though, since she’s a girl she doesn’t have to fight, she just cooks and cleans. Unlike me, on my 16th birthday I have to register to be a gladiator to bring money home for my mom. After technology took over the world, the U.S. decided to invest most of it’s money into the “new age”. One day the cloud that controlled all forms of technology became overloaded and broke down. Leaving not just the U.S. but the majority of the world broke. Most large countries decided to re-introduce gladiators to cut down some of the population and to bring in some revenue. The problem is, that every 16 year old boy living in poverty must register. I’m not too threatening, 5’8, 130 lbs. Athletic build. I’m more on the small side. So I’ve been training vigorously on the tree in my backyard so when my time comes I’m remotely ready.

When she finally made it out the house she went on a rant “You’re crazy. You can’t just yell at the top of your lungs in the middle of the street like some crackhead.”. .

“Well good morning to you too!” I replied.

She rolled her eyes and said “What’s the rush anyway?”.

“Oh nothing I just needed some company to the store,” I said.

“You got me out of bed for this? You know I’m not your bodyguard right Atticus? You’re a big boy now. You can walk yourself to the store.”

“Ouch. That cut deep,” I chuckled as I picked up the milk.

As we made our way home it hit me that I am turning 16 in a couple of months. I wasn’t ready. I wish there was somewhere for me to run away from all of this.

When Augusta saw my face she nudged me and asked “What’s wrong?” Since Augusta was always a tomboy, I always saw her as a brother and nothing more. She’s tougher than most guys I know. She’s not afraid to fight and not afraid to get dirty, two traits that I wished would rub off on me.

I walked her to the door and said “Nothing. It’s just the big day is coming up and I’m just nervous as all.”

“Oh yeah...I’m sure you’ll do fine. You’re still practicing right?”

“Training Augusta! It’s training! But yeah, speaking of that, I gotta go train right now. See you tomorrow!”

“Bye!” she replied.

On my way back across the street my mind was swirling: “How do I get better?; I’m so small they’ll beat me to a pulp; Stop Atticus. You’re great you can do this!” I negotiated with myself. So I dropped the milk off and went outback to train. “Let’s start with some cardio” I said to myself. 100 jumping jacks and 100 jump ropes. Next up was lower body “50 squats, 50 lunges” then I finished with 100 push ups and 100 crunches. After my gruesome workout, I was beat, so I fell asleep on the grass.

I awoke to the screaming of my mom “Atticus! Time to eat!” said my mom. “You shouldn’t be working out so hard in this heat, you’ll drop dead!”

“I have to, I have to be ready for the registration on my birthday,” I replied.

Then she said “I know, I just hate to see you end up like your father. I can’t lose you too.”

She began to cry and I didn’t know what to do so I assured her that everything would be alright, even though I didn’t have the slightest amount of hope in myself. After Dinner, I made my way back outside and practiced my poison dart accuracy. The darts consists of Komodo Dragon saliva extract and enhanced to kill it’s victim within minutes. At that time, I was new to this, so I practiced throwing darts at a target over and over. I never hit the bullseye. Most times I missed but sometimes if I was lucky, I hit the outer ring. I gave up and decided to just call it a night and head to bed. I had to get up early tomorrow for school. I attended Spartacus Secondary School. It’s a pretty big school even though it’s only from 8th to 10th grade and only boys are allowed to attend. Boys from around the city come here before they’re sent off to the camps for their fights. I have less than a year. Less than a year to live my life before I become someone else’s property. In less than a year I’ll be transforming from a good kid who wishes there was a way out of the system, to a cold-blooded killer, a warrior, a gladiator.

I woke up the next morning and was so late that I almost missed the school hovercraft. I chased it for blocks when it finally stopped and let me on. As I walked down the aisle, everyone was laughing at me and throwing paper balls at my head. If you can’t tell, I’m a wimp here. I get no respect and I’m constantly pushed around by my enemy, Leonidas. When he catches me in the hallway he calls me names or he knocks all of my stuff on the ground. But today he took it too far.

“Augusta! Augusta!” he mocks as he laughs at me with his friends. “How’s your little girlfriend short stuff?”

“That’s not my girlfriend Leo, what do you want?”

He became serious, “I want your money. Give me everything in your pockets,”

“C’mon Leo stop playing, I have a class to go to.” I said while trying to walk away.

“No you don’t,” He said as he moved closer menacingly. Then him and his friends suddenly  pushed me to the wall and started jumping me. Bang, bang, boom, the sounds my body was making while they punched me in the face, eyes, stomach and ribs. Even though my body was killing me, I attempted to raise my hands and fight back but my body wouldn’t let me. I was weak and fell to the ground and curled up like an armadillo. During this time, all I could think about was how much I hated being smaller than everyone else, how much I hated being bullied, and how much I hated Leonidas.

Before I blacked out, I heard my savior. “Stop! Stop! Get off of him!” as the bullies scrambled away.

It was Mr. Petrus. He ran over and helped me stumble to my feet.

“You got quite the beat down there kid. Good thing I came over when I did, I don’t know how much longer you would’ve lasted!”

“Thanks for your help Mr. Petrus. Beat downs like that are starting to become routine.” I said as I spit out blood from my mouth.

“I used to be like you, so I want to help you.” he said in a friendly voice. “Something like a mentor,” he added.

“Like a trainer?” I questioned.

“Exactly. I’ll just have to talk your mom and run it by her. Also, I have to be sure you’re dedicated to this. I can’t waste my time on a pupil who doesn’t want to learn.”

“I promise I’ll be dedicated I promise!!! Just teach me how to fight so I can stand a chance.” “Alright, just let me take you home and we’ll work it out with your mom.” he said assuringly.

“What happened to your eye!?!?” my mother said.

“Nothing mom. But Mr. Petrus is here to talk to you about training me for the registration.”

“Training? What kind of training?” she asked.

“Well Alexandra, as you can see your son Atticus gets bullied quite frequently. I would just like to help him get better, faster, and stronger; since you know his big day is coming up.” said Mr. Petrus.

“Why does he need your help?” she retorted.

“Well ma’am Atticus’s registration date is soon approaching and he needs a lot of work. I was once in training for Gladiator fighting and could be of great help in the survival of your son. I see my younger self in young Atticus and would only like to push him towards reaching his maximum potential.” he said heartwarmingly.

As I looked at Mr. Petrus I could see the vague description of a former Gladiator. Wide Shoulders, big arms, muscular frame. He was probably one of the best; I thought to myself.

“The training would be every day directly after school, and I promise, if Atticus gives me his maximum effort you’ll see a change in him. Physically and Mentally.” he reassured.

“Please mom please? I need help! I’m always getting pushed around and the registration is only a couple of months away!” I pleaded.

“I don’t know Atticus…” she argued.

“Mom! Please!” I groveled once more.

“Ok! Ok! Fine! Just keep my son safe Mr. Petrus. He’s the only thing I have left.” My mom said as she started to tear up.

“He’s in good hands Alexandra. We start tomorrow bring your A-game kid. I don’t need my time wasted.” Mr. Petrus said seriously.

“I will!” I replied.

Then he looked at me with a smirk and said “Good, that’s what I want to hear. I’ll be over here around 4 tomorrow so we can start.”

then he walked away. I couldn’t wait I was so excited. I called Augusta outside.

“You’re looking at a soon to be gladiator,” I said cockily.

“What are you talking about?” she asked.

“Well I’m gonna start my training for the registration starting tomorrow with one of my teachers.” “Well it doesn’t matter what training you do. I could still kick your ass.” she retorted.

“Ha. Ha. Ha. I could whoop you with my right hand tied behind my back.” I said.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah. I can’t wait to see it with my own eyes.”

After school the next day I rushed home and got ready for training. Mr. Petrus was already there waiting. “You’re late Atticus.” he said seriously.

“I’m sorry, I got home as quick as I could.” I responded.

“Well let’s start with an overview of your weaponry.”

“Okay, I have my poison darts, flaming sword, and my ray gun. I need some help in learning how to use them. I’m not confident in them.”

He looked me in my eyes and said “First lesson. You should always believe in yourself and if you do, a sling shot can become a deadly weapon. What’s a gun without a confident shooter behind the trigger?” We started with the poison darts. He got behind me and fixed my form and showed me other ways to improve my accuracy. Next we practiced my sword fighting. Mr. Petrus brought his sword from his gladiator days to help me. Finally, I had target practice for my ray gun, hitting bottles of a gate 10 yards away and gradually getting larger. After months of training I could see a change in myself. I became confident, faster, stronger, a better fighter, and an actual contender.

The day before my birthday, he told me it was my last day of training and that today was the final test. I had to fight him. “Are you sure Mr. Petrus?” I asked. “I don’t want to hurt you,” I continued.

“I’m your enemy now, he’s not worried about your wellbeing so why are you worried about his? I’m trying to hurt you. Hands up.” he said calmly.

“But Mr. Petrus I d-” he punch me in the nose. I fell to the ground, surprised, and confused. “Get. Up.” he said angrily. “You better fight back or I’m just going to beat you down,” he swung again. I dipped to the left then dipped backwards to avoid the combination of punches. Then I swung and hit him in the mouth. His emotion didn’t change, he just pulled out a sword and charged towards me. I pulled out my flaming sword as I got in my defensive stance. “Mr. Petrus, I don’t want to fight you!” I replied.

He replied calmly “You have no choice.” he struck his sword towards my legs as I parried his attack numerous times. “Click, Clank, Clank” the sounds of the swords clashing together under the sunset orange sky. Until an elbow to the chin disarmed Mr. Petrus and knocked him to the ground. I stepped on his chest and put my sword to his neck.

“Stop. It’s over.” He gripped a handful of soil from my mother’s garden and threw it in my face. I rubbed my eyes and before I knew it he had my ray gun to my face.

“No. Now it’s over. Bang. You’re dead. You lost.” He put the gun down. “You never show mercy to your opponent,” The most important lesson he told me was to “kill the opposition before they killed me.” “Atticus. Everyone has a reason and a drive to keep them in the Gladiator Battle. Yours is your mother. Without you, she’s done for. She needs you to bring money home to live. Now these other guys on the other hand, will either be slaves fighting for their freedom or poor, desperate boys like you who are in the battles to bring home money for their family. There’s no room for nice guys here Atticus. Remember that.” He helped me up. “You’ve grown so much in these last couple of months, physically, as a fighter, and as a man. I can almost look at you as a son. It’s been a pleasure to train a wonderful young student like yourself. I only wish for the best of you on your registration day.”

“Thank you Mr. Petrus, thank you for believing in me and saving my life. I don’t know how long I would’ve lasted without you.” We started to pack everything up.

“Night kid, I’ll see you at the registration,” He waved and walked off into the sunset.

The next morning I went to the bathroom and looked in the mirror, I didn’t see my former self. The small, fearful, young kid was now gone. He’s been replaced with a confident, walking tall, lion hearted man. Before I left for the registration, I had to talk to Augusta. “Augusta! Augusta!” I called out like I used to.

“Hey Atticus, long time no see.”

“I gotta talk to you,” I called out.

“Alright, I’m on my way down.” she responded. “Wassup?” She said.

“No Happy Birthday? You’re the worst.”

“I was getting around to it!” she laughed. “Besides, it’s not much of a happy day. But, I got something for you.” From behind her back she pulled out a dog tag that said “A.A. the dynamic duo. Together forever.” I stared shocked.

“How could you afford this?...” I said, with my eyes still wide open.

“Don’t worry about it! Just a little saving,” she smiled and laughed.

“You like it? I bought it so you’d know, during the registration and during your fights I’ll be there fighting with you.”

Still in disbelief I said. “I love it. I’ll never take it off. Shit. I’m almost late!” I gave her a long, tight, 5 20 second hug before I ran off. When I got to the registration there were hundreds of boys already there. Most looked ready but some of them looked frightened like me before training with Mr. Petrus. I felt bad for them, I knew how they felt. When it was finally my turn to register, they asked me my name, my weight, where I was from and my weapon preference. I told them what they wanted and received a number and waited for my number to be called.

After waiting for some hours I heard “#773 and #821 report to your respected locker rooms.” When I got there a man was waiting for me.

“Today you will be put up against another contestant in a fight to the death. The winner moves to the next round and will travel to Camp Sparta for further training and battles. I’d advise you to make yourself appealing to the fans to get your name out there. Okay? You have 10 minutes to prep.” and he left, just like that. I sat in the locker room and thought about my mother’s smile and cry when I left, and most importantly the times I shared with Augusta and our last moments together. Finally, I tried to remember everything Petrus taught me before I put my gear on.

“5 more minutes until showtime Augusta.” the man said. I took a deep breathe as I walked to the arena tunnel. I could hear the crowd get pepped up as I moved closer to the end of the tunnel. I closed my eyes and kissed my necklace from Augusta and then traced a cross on my chest before my name was called. “Hereeeeee comesssss Atticus!!!!!” The crowd roars as I grip my weapons and walk towards the light at the end of the tunnel.

The Things We Do For Love

Posted by Stephen Eager-White in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Monday, December 9, 2013 at 2:17 pm

Books and movies are known to portray false love in today’s modern day society. Ever since childhood, children watch movies and T.V. shows that focus on fantasies of true love. Princesses, castles, princes, and other fantasies brainwash kids at a young age into thinking that this is how life should go and this is how relationships work. In the book “Taming of the Shrew”, Bianca and Lucentio are looked at as the dream couple with no issues or problems and live the fantasy marriage. In 50 first dates Drew Barrymore was in a car accident and now has no short term memory. Everytime she goes to sleep she forgets everything from the day before. After falling in love at first sight, Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore hit it off immediately only for her take wake up tomorrow morning forgetting that she ever met him. Each day Adam Sandler goes out of his way and uses chivalry to win Drew Barrymore’s love every day. Love at first sight can happen with the same person at any time, any day.

“O yes, I saw sweet beauty in her face, Such as the daughter of Agenor had,” Act 1, sc. 1, Ln. 169

In ‘shrew’ Lucentio originally comes to Padua to attend the university but then lays eyes on Bianca. When he saw her he compared her Europa. In greek mythology it was said that Zeus saw her and fell in love immediately. Once he sets eyes on her, his goals and priorities change. He no longer attends school and spends his time in Padua trying to convince Bianca and Baptista that Bianca should marry him and not the other two suitors. The love at first sight hit him like a brick wall and changed everything.

The suitors in ‘Shrew’ and ‘50 first dates’ both have one goal in mind once they set their eyes on their girl. To marry their girls. In ‘50 first dates’ Adam Sandler first sets his eyes on Drew Barrymore in a café and immediately knows that he wants to be with her forever.

In the movie ‘50 first dates’ Adam sandler was a ‘fast’ man. He had sex with tourists who came to the island of Hawaii and sent them on their way. He was just spending time here before he took his research of seals to Alaska. Then, one day he walked into a café and set eyes on Drew Barrymore and changed his whole life. Love at first sight. For the first time, he was nervous and didn’t know how to approach her. When he finally spoke to her the next day they hit it off. This relates to ‘shrew’ because both couples fell in love with each other within the same day. But a big problem arose in ‘50 First Dates’ when they met up at the café again the next day.

Also, another comparison of these two couples are the hoops the men jump through to be together. In ‘50 first dates’ Adam Sandler goes through “50” different ways to get Drew Barrymore to fall in love with him. In ‘Shrew’ Lucentio must pose as Cambio, a school teacher, in order to get close to Bianca. Both men go through more problems in order to get the girl than an average man in real life.

“Basta; content thee, for I have it full.

We have not yet been seen in any house,

Nor can we lie distinguish’d by our faces

For man or master; then it follows thus;

Thou shalt be master, Tranio, in my stead,

Keep house and port and servants as I should

” Act 1, sc1 Ln. 204

In this section of the play, Lucentio has to dress up as Cambio, a school teacher, in order to get close to Bianca. Another problem Lucentio is faced with is the fact that Bianca’s father, Baptista, won’t let her marry before Katherine. It is difficult because Katherine isn’t a desired wife by most men. She is strong willed and has an adamant attitude. So Lucentio had to wait for Petruchio to take care of Katherine before he could come into the picture. Lucentio goes through all of this for one girl. He had a plan before he fell deeply in love with Bianca at first sight.

Lucentio and Adam Sandler are similar in the fact that each were willing to go extremely out of their way for one girl. Lucentio left school and Adam Sandler put his walrus research trip to Alaska on hold for Drew Barrymore. Even though both men put in great efforts to win their significant other’s love, the couple of problems that ‘Lucentio’ faced don’t compare to the hoops that Adam Sandler had to jump through from day one to have a future with Drew Barrymore.

In this section of ‘50 first dates’ Adam Sandler came to the café the next day expecting to have another beautiful day with Drew Barrymore. But then was surprised to find out that she had no recollection of ever speaking to him before. Once an employee of the café explained to Adam Sandler Drew Barrymore’s mental disability it became his priority to get her to love him forever. He thought maybe if he proved that he loved her and tried something new and ridiculous everyday, she would remember him and fall for him the way he fell for her the first time they met. Adam Sandler didn’t succeed in winning Drew Barrymore’s love the way he did times before the first couple of days trying to win her love again. In fact, more times than not he failed and she became angry with him. After what seemed like 50 attempts of trying to have a regular conversation to tricking her into talking to him. He figured out that she will never remember him the next morning. Making a very chivalrous decision he decided to stay with her and wake up next to her everyday and refresh her memory everyday of who he is and the relationship the two share.

‘50 First Dates’ and ‘Shrew’ have many similarities. But the most important similarity lies in what this book and this movie portray about society’s view on dating. In these two examples the men go after the girl giving all they have. Both men make their women their first priority at this stage in life, dropping all other things that seemed important before being in love became more important to them. ‘50 First Dates’ and ‘Shrew’ both support that you can fall deeply in love with the same person at any time, any day.

Humanities Final Portfolio 2013

“Let’s come together” “everyone come into the circle”. It’s something that Mr. Block has been telling us all year. He must have a thing for circles. But really in the class you can see that we all became closer with each other since the beginning of the year. I think the general understanding of this year is that coming together as a community can help/make a change over time. In a number of assignments from both courses the theme of coming together to make a change has come up. In the very beginning one of the early english journals (journal 6 to be exact) Mr. Block asked us why do we think humans treat other humans so badly? That journal intrigued me because I’ve wondered the same thing. I said that “I think humans treat each other so badly because of opinions. Some people tend to treat others badly when they don’t agree with their opinion.” I also wanted to hear what everyone else thought. Even the people who treat other people badly I wanted to know what they thought. In class Mr. Block usually tells us to read our journals aloud and we discuss the topic for a little bit. Next was history journal #7 “Reel bad Arabs”. In that journal we talked about the different stereotypes of Arabian people that were portrayed in movies. I wish we could rid the world of stereotypes. They don’t do any good for anyone and only hurt people who are affected by racial stereotypes. Every race is affected and each race has a negative stereotype. The last journal I’ll talk about is history journal #20. In journal 20 we talked about segregation and oppression, what causes change and ways to make change successful. Uniting together was one of the options. Afterwards we talked roles, rules, and responsibilities. I have chores and other responsibilities to do. They’re important because if my mom and I don’t work together then the house will be completely out of order. Next in the middle of the year we read Lord of The Flies. In my LOTF doc I said that “In my opinion Jack is a sociopath and becomes jealous of the power that Ralph possesses. It shows that he is so desperate for power that he starts his own tribe in order to become leader of the boys and turn the boys against Ralph.” Jack starting his own tribe was a bad idea. if they would’ve just gotten over their differences then they could’ve have made a little society and been alright between the kids. Coming together would’ve been a good change. Also in the beginning of the year we talked about the Keystone Pipeline being built. A big part of the story was the people coming together and protesting against the pipeline being built. I think the people protesting against the pipeline are going to influence the result. In my work I quoted some articles that explained who and how the people against the pipeline were protesting.  “In September thousands of people converged on the White House in the largest act of civil disobedience in the history of the U.S. climate movement. The protesters sat-in peacefully and over 1,200 were arrested in protest of the Keystone XL project.” and “More than 2,000 people showed up at the Nebraska State Department hearing to say they don't want crude oil running through the delicate Sandhills or the Ogallala aquifer—which supplies water to most of the Midwest.” Then in history we talked about modern day sweatshops. In my response to modern day sweatshops I said that “The most effective way to change what’s going on in the sweatshops is to revolt and protest against the Poor country elites and the Multinational Corporations.” and “With the protests maybe the world could get involved and once everyone becomes aware of sweatshops the Elites and Corporations will be forced to change their horrible ways.” All we have to do is come together and boycott the multinational corporations. Finally one of the longest projects of the year we created a play. My play was about the life of a chinese factory worker and the struggles they face everyday. The only way the made their factory better to work in is by sneaking a letter into one of the products explaining how badly they were treated everyday with poor working conditions. The woman who found the letter brought it to officials This year has taught me a lot. But the most important thing that I will take away from this year is coming together as a community can help/make a change over time.

I wish...

I wish I could have better handwriting...
I wish I could be taller
I wish I had more money to spend
I wish I had more clothes, like enough that I didn't have to wear the same thing twice
I wish I could do whatever I want, and not live by any rules
I wish I had a car
I wish I could play basketball as good as my friends without the practice
I wish I lived in a mansion
I wish I didn't have to go to school to make good money
I wish everyone listened to me
I also wish I had superpowers...like flying, superspeed, and invisibility.
That would be cool

Progress Note

Stephen, You have greatly improved since the beginning of the year in your efforts in this class. You've completed your classwork on time and turned more quality work. In the very beginning of the year we used to butt heads because you always had your headphones in but now you've payed more attention in class and I've noticed. There are some areas of improvement though. You need to keep strong in your efforts heading into next quarter and to cut the chatter down. You're very sociable and it becomes a distraction to other students. But overall, a very good quarter

Language Autobiography 2013: The Standard English vs. Slang Dilemma

Iron Stream

Introduction: In this unit my stream learned about language and how it affects people's lives. We were assigned a project that was called our Language Autobiography. In this assignment we were supposed to connect a story from another author and a story coming from our own life about language and how it affects our lives. This assignment was challenging for me but after a couple of drafts and outlines I think it's way better than what it was before, I'm proud of my language autobiography.

It was winter break and I was on the phone with my friend Jaaz. We were talking about the sixers and how they were folding in the fourth quarter. When my Grandmother overheard the conversation she told me to “speak like I have an education.”  She judged my language as a language of ignorance and unintelligence. I felt insulted. She made an assumption that has no connection to my intelligence.

Adolescents are regularly forced to speak a certain way. Just this Saturday I had a couple of friends over my house to play some video games and hang out. We were sitting in my living room playing NBA 2k13. The TV was blasting and the room had the aroma of pizza. Each of us were so glued to the T.V. that our seats were only a few feet away from the screen. While playing we got animated. Jumping up and down laughing, screaming, pointing, and arguing over a game. The game was so close and the pressure was on. My mom heard us speaking vernacular english and using slang terms that me and a couple of friends say often. Such as “that’s dead”, “drawlin’”, and “frying”. While we were talking about Jerry Stackhouse a basketball player who is no longer in his zenith. I said “Jerry Stackhouse? That’s dead.” My mom who also is a sports fanatic responded with “What? Speak regular.” We had to ease up on our vernacular english since my mom joined the conversation. I stated that “Jerry Stackhouse is buns, he’s like 70 still playing in the league. That’s dead.” We all started cracking up almost laughing out of our chairs. My mom seemed troubled. It was because in her mind I was speaking “ghetto” or “speaking without an education.” She made me speak the way she wanted me to speak.

Gloria Anzaldua was regularly forced to speak a certain way as an adolescent also. When she was younger she was caught speaking Spanish at recess when she wasn’t supposed to. Anzaldua was punished with three licks from a sharp ruler onto her knuckles. Her teachers didn’t like that she spoke Spanish when she was supposed to speak English she still had a Mexican accent. When she was older she was required to take two speech classes at Pan-American University to get rid of her accent. Anzaldua and I were both forced to speak a certain way because the people in power above us didn’t like it.

People’s intelligence shouldn’t be judged based on the way they speak. I believe this because the way I speak is a choice. When my Grandmother told me this winter break “speak like I have an education” I was judged that I am not intelligent but I choose to speak that way when I’m with my friends. We all speak a form of Jargon that wouldn’t be understood to the untrained ear of an adult. I believe that I’m intelligent and didn’t deserve to be judged because she didn’t understand what we’re speaking.

Gloria Anzaldua’s intelligence was also judged when she was younger. When she spoke Spanish in front of  her teachers when she was supposed to speak English they thought she wasn’t capable of speaking English and that she should “go back to Mexico where she belonged.” Both of us also speak a form of Jargon when we’re with our friends. The form of Jargon she speaks is called “Pachuco”. Pachuco is a language of rebellion and a secret language for adolescents to speak only. Some words from the secret language that my friends and I use are “that’s dead” which means that’s boring and “Frying” which mean I’m doing good in that area. Some words from Pachuco that she uses is “Ruca” which means girl or woman and “Vato” which means guy or dude. We both speak secret languages between us and our fellow adolescents.

Even though we speak different we are still communicating the same ideas. Even though I speak in a way that my Mom or any other adult doesn’t understand my friends still understand every word I say. My friends and I are fully capable of speaking Standard English but we speak our way because it’s a preference for when we’re comfortable. Anzaldua’s parents or teachers never would catch on to language of Pachuco because it wasn’t made for them. It’s both of our preferences and we or anyone else shouldn’t be identified as stupid or lacking of education because we have the ability to speak proper but just choose not to.

I see adolescents everyday being told to “speak this way” or “speak that way”. All that matters is that you know how to speak Standard English when it counts. The forms of English are infinite and you can’t force someone to change the way they speak and change their identity because you don’t like it. I believe we all should come to the agreement that we shouldn’t stereotype Standard English is for the educated, and Jargon is for the uneducated.

Keystone Pipeline Monologue project (Stephen)

Posted by Stephen Eager-White in World History - Block on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at 9:03 pm
In my project I wrote my 5 monologues in the perspective of 5 different people and how building the Keystone Pipeline would affect them. The Keystone Pipeline is going to be used to carry oil from Canada to Texas. It's causing much controversy between because some people want the pipeline to be built because it could help the economy, but others don't want that pipeline to be built because it could damage the environment. I learned how much building the pipeline would affect people’s lives for the good and the bad. The 5 monologues were in the perspective of a Polar Bear, a construction worker, Texas resident, the president, and the Earth. The most affected out of my monologues is probably the Polar Bears. The keystone pipeline could potentially kill a lot of polar bears and I feel like it was my best one. I hope you enjoy all of my pieces.

Monologue #1

Am I making the right decision?

Waking up on this bitter morning, only thing on my mind is guilt. I feel guilty because I have to support my family but by doing so I am also messing up the environment. As a walk into the kitchen, (walks in the kitchen) I see my daughters bright smiling face. I think about her future and what she will grow to be. Am I making the right choice for their future? Or am I slowly destroying it. The choices I make now, depends on her future.
As I’m leaving out the door (heads towards the door) for work, my daughter says “I love you daddy.” Hearing those words are the best feeling in the world.
As I arrive at the construction sight, (walking to my station) I see the exhausted faces of the other men and women here to work on the pipeline. The same thing is running through out my mind that I woke up thinking about. I try not to think about it, but it keeps crossing my mind.
I ask myself, Is this what I should be doing? Is there another way I could support my family? These questions disrupt me every time I come to work. And they always will, I guess until I confront them. But until then, I have to get back to supporting my family.

Monologue #2
Does my future depend on the humans?

(Angry, grouchy) They can’t approve this. They can’t. Global warming is already affecting my family and I. My ignorant wife wants this pipeline plan to go through “it’s good for the economy it will help everyone!” “Not for us dumbass! You think they’re going to send any of that money down here to the ice caps?”. Then she gets an attitude for the rest of the night. (calming down) I shrug it off she’ll get over it by the morning. I wish she would sit down with me and absorb the information that the world news is giving to us. I don’t want to the bad guy but look at the news for god’s sake! We’re not a priority to them anymore. Ever since this global warming issue started to rise the whole neighborhood has been affected. I lost my brother Albert to global warming last year. He tragically drowned. We’re all suffering help us Lord! Food is scarce nowadays, we need some food on the shelf. I swam for an hour looking for food for my family. Some homes are falling off. Literally. (hopelessly speaking ) I go outside and look at the northern lights to look for an answer from god to my prayers to no prevail. I’m outraged, scared, and depressed, (Anxiously) I feel like I’m having a panic attack. What do I do? What can I do? Where do I turn? I’m trying to save my family. I go back inside and then a possible solution hit me! I suggest to my wife maybe we can get taken to the zoo and be saved! I heard in the Philadelphia Zoo they take great care of our kind. I heard they give all inhabitants a stable environment with your own living space and with a pool. “Sounds good right?... What do you mean that’s stupid?... At least I’m throwing out ideas, what are you doing to help?... Yeah that’s what I thought just walk away from your problems forever right?”. “She infuriates me!”... Aww what am I saying?... Everyone in the North Pole is trying to make it to the zoo to save their skins and the odds are horribly against me. I go the living room and sit in my favorite chair to keep myself updated on the pipeline. The Americans have already done their part in contributing to global warming which releases deadly greenhouse gases, melt the polar ice caps and raise sea levels, and these are just some of the effects that global warming has on the world. What am I supposed tell my son and daughter when they ask “what’s happening to our everyone’s homes Daddy?” I must lie through my teeth to protect their innocent hearts and tell them “everything’s alright” knowing that it’s only a matter of time before it’s all over. I pray everyday that they don’t approve this pipeline my home is already in danger and this pipeline will only speed up the process. They’re building it to save a couple jobs. How about you save a thousand lives! If they decide to do the right thing and say no to the pipeline we all could be saved. These days I pray, stay humble and live life day by day and spend time with my family because I know that our days together are numbered if they approve the pipeline. If I’m going to die let me die with my loved ones facing death on.

Monologue #3
                                    Making a change

As I stand upon this stage this morning, (holding microphone)  speaking to you all, one thing is running through my mind. Did they ever think how it could affect me? My neighbors? My family? All the people that call this place their home. My home, Texas. The people at TransCanada really don’t care about the well being of us citizens. They only care about the money. Their greed disgusts me. They think of us like were not humans too. We all share this earth we live on
I’d never thought in a million years that the government would allow something like this to even happen. It’s destroying not only the land but the lives of thousands of people. Their homes, their families, everything. Living around the fumes that are coming from the construction are deadly. The fumes and gases could make someone extremely sick or even kill somebody that inhales the gases and fumes everyday.
Where do they expect us to go? What do they expect we the people of America to do? Just back down from it all? We have to fight for what we believe in. Hopefully the president will see our cries for help and not approve this pipeline to be built.
(Raises fist) It’s up to us to make a change in this world. To stand up and never give up no matter how hard times get. It’s on us to make this change.

Monologue # 4

                                  Living on this earth

I can’t believe this are they serious? I’m the only thing these filthy humans have for a home. (starts to grow angry) I’m irreplaceable! What other planet can take you in and take care of you like I can? Yeah I thought so none of them. I’m being taken advantage of every second of the day. These filthy heathens are either littering their cans, paper bags, or they’re releasing CO2 driving their cars and their buses. I mean c’mon show some respect! 4.6 billion years. 4.6 billion years I’ve supported every species that ever existed on this planet and I’ve always been happy to help. Giving them the gift of life, the ability to grow and prosper and this is how you repay me!? I’ve watched the human’s grow and evolve from apes to the prime human race. I’ve let you all live here on me for free and have never asked for anything in return. (in a heartbroken voice) Until now. I’ve been slowly killed off for years now and now the only thing I ask is that you repay me by not building this keystone pipeline. Do you not appreciate me? By building this pipeline the leaks will damage my clean waters, and infect my airs with dirty tar sand oils. I pray the humans learn the mistakes of their ways and start to appreciate what they have before it’s gone. Before we’re all gone. We only have but so much longer to live. All of you already leaked in my fresh waters before. Here’s some numbers for you BP leaked 3,850 square miles worth of oil and 4,768 animals were also killed in the spill. If we continue on the same path that we are headed down, no one will be able to survive and breathe this air we have been polluting for so long. I sometimes ask myself, how are these humans still living on earth? I’ve been trying to keep things on earth better for humans well being for 4,600,000,000 years. And I feel like by polluting the air and building this new pipeline that runs from Canada through Texas will only make things worse for everyone. It won’t be easy for me or them to stay healthy.(Deep breath)  But what can I do? I’ve tried everything possible. You know the difference between right and wrong but when it’s comes down to it, it’s on you humans to step up and change the outcome this world will have.

#5
Am I the right president for america?

As I sit at my desk I think to myself, am I really the right president for this term? Am I prepared to lead this country another four years? There’s so much pressure on me. I have to appeal to the american citizens and show them that I’m the man with the plan. Time for change. It’s time for change. I’ve been extreme progress for four years now, and the republicans still don’t give me the credit I deserve on helping the economy and health care. Can I make a difference for four more years as president?
(takes deep breath) There’s a controversy going around the world about this keystone pipeline plan that wants to be built for oil to travel faster throughout the United States. The pipeline is 1700 miles from Canada to Texas. It has some great positives and some devastating cons. This pipeline will create 20,00 jobs for the unemployed, but it was also destroy the environment. The pipeline will create more ghastly greenhouse gases but safer and more efficient way to transport oil throughout out the United States. But also the economy is already in debt and this pipeline will cost 7 billion dollars to build. But then again it provides a lot of cheap abundant energy for Americans. As the president, I have to make a very tough decision on whether or not to approve this pipeline from being built. Will this be the right choice for families all around america? They depend on me. It will help the economy everywhere but what about those people whose homes run near the pipeline. It’s almost guaranteed to have a leak and ruin the soil. When the soil is ruined there will be no way for those inhabitants to grow their crops. It’s up to me to make the right choice, but what if I end up making the wrong one? (takes another deep breath) I guess only time can tell.

Appendix: The pipeline would carry oil throughout the U.S from Canada to Texas (1700 miles). Also the pipeline would cost 7 billion dollars, but it would carry 800,000 barrels of oil a day and it would create thousands of jobs. It’s way cheaper than getting oil from foreign countries when we can get it from an ally. The oil that’s being transported is extremely dirty, it called tar sands oil. The pipeline has a good chance of leaking and having an oil spill. If that happens it will damage the environment.

Descriptive Essay

Posted by Stephen Eager-White in English 2 - Block on Friday, September 28, 2012 at 4:51 pm

Stephen White
Iron Stream,

I’m so excited. Today’s the big day. I’m at my grandmother’s house in the pool when my Aunt greets me with a surprise. ‘Are you ready?” she asks as she sips her daily cup of black tea. “Ready for what?” I ask in surprise. “For your first driving lesson.” “Of course” I reply confidently. I scarf down my lunch like I haven’t eaten in days then I dash to my room to slip on my nikes and throw on a plain old button up shirt. I slipped my nikes on so hastily that  I didn’t even bother to tie them and then I dashed down the steps and we head out the door.

I’ve been waiting years for this day to come. So we get into the car and she goes over the basics. “Make sure your mirrors are good,  put on your seat belt, and turn the car on.”  I turn on the car and put the car in reverse. I’m not even at the end of the block when she starts screaming at the top of her lungs “TURN! TURN!”  I slammed on the brakes as we were inches away from the curb. I had to catch my breath as I put the car in reverse to try the turn again. “I’ve been driving since I was 10 it’s not that hard” she says. I mumble under my breath as I grip the wheel and grit my teeth to make the turn.

I’m in an empty school parking lot learning how to drive near my Grandma's house. My interest in driving started when I was 12 and we went to the car show at the convention center and saw all the new cars. Seeing the car’s doors shine off the lights, breathing in that new car smell, and being able to sit in the drivers seat I could envision myself on the road. It was then that my interest in driving grew. As I complete the turning section of my Aunt’s homemade driving test we take it to the streets as I drive back to my grandma’s house. I was doing well as I turned back into my grandma’s driveway.

I get out of the car and immediately start receiving criticism. “You have to slow down” “you're not a pro” “both hands on the wheel” she said. “Alright, alright” I say annoyed. I just drove a car for the first time I still had the jitters and her telling me what I was doing wrong wasn’t what I wanted to hear right now. At this point, I wasn’t listening to anything she was saying. All I was thinking about was getting back in the car and back on the road. It was exhilarating driving on the roads I finally was old enough to drive I’ As I made my way in the driveway of course everyone asks hysterically “are you ok?” “how’d you do?” “Yeah I saw you swerving down the street a little bit.” I know they mean well, but give me a break it’s my first time. “Yes I’m ok” “I think I did pretty well” I reply aggravated. A little practice and I’ll get my permit and then my license, I think to myself. When I’m allowed to start driving I doubt I’ll be in the house at all unless it’s necessary. I’ve been looking forward to driving since I was a toddler playing with my toy cars.

Now I’m studying for my driving test that I will take in about 9 months. I took a practice  driving test thinking that I wouldn’t need help on it. When I saw the horrible results of the test I then decided to finally ask for help on driving. I knew I couldn’t do it on my own. When I got some help on the test I got a higher score the second time. It turns out that I didn’t know everything I thought I did about driving.

I also learned that asking for help and accepting criticism isn’t a bad thing. Even some people of higher power can accept some help and criticism in running their government. Even the mighty United States need some help. Even though our problems aren’t as big as third world countries we’re so in debt that we’re borrowing money from other countries and getting deeper into debt. Another domestic crisis is our ability to keep jobs in the country. And finally probably the healthcare crisis that affects a great amount of Americans.

Me and some dictators have some things in common. Neither of us take criticism well. Countries ran by dictatorship are usually ran by leaders who are in charge of everything and won’t accept help from any citizens. The citizens have no voice and maybe if the citizens were able to speak their mind and vote the country could rise. Most countries ran by dictators are not doing well at all and thats a fact and just need to accept help thats given to them sometimes like me. I think that all countries should be ran by a republic or a democracy. The United States is ran by a republic and the citizens get a say in who comes to power.

Blog 3 Post for change

Posted by Stephen Eager-White in English 1 - Dunn on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at 10:49 pm

Blog 3:

In my first blog I introduced you to the topic of child trafficking and told you why I was interested. In my second blog I showed you some new info I found based off of my new research and I also voiced my opinion on the subject. Now this is my 3rd blog post and it’s my post for change.

In my research I’ve found that things that have been done to raise awareness were written letters to the government so they could step up and try and save these innocent children, donations, some send gifts, clothes, and on the 21st of every month you can join others in fasting for child trafficking. I think these are great ways to raise awareness for child sex trafficking. donating clothes and money could help save a child’s life.

To raise awareness I’ve made a public service announcement. In my P.S.A. I showed where the trafficking is happening, what age group it’s affecting, and how you can help. The most effective way to help children in the trafficking is to donate to UNICEF. My opinion on the subject is for it to stop completely. Trafficking is the second most popular organized crime in the world. and billions of women and children get trafficked each year.

I propose that there should be police stationed in places with high reports of trafficking. Like Thailand and all of Asia. Child trafficking is so popular that I can almost guarantee that you’ll find at least one brothel. And finding one brothel could save up 30 children’s lives. It hasn’t happened yet but I hope that it will happen one day it could be a very effective way to help end this industry.

Blog 2 Child Sex trafficking

Posted by Stephen Eager-White in English 1 - Dunn on Friday, May 18, 2012 at 2:57 pm

Stephen White Blog 2:

My opinion on child sex trafficking is that it’s unacceptable. Honestly trafficking anyone is wrong. What joy do you get from taking advantage of a child? As they’re raping a child do they think that someone could be doing the same to theirs? Taking a child or an adult and using them for your own benefit is unjust. I learned that the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) is a federal law that criminalizes the act of human trafficking and was first signed into action in early 2000. In the U.S. the top 10 states that have the most children taken into the industry are: California, Texas, Florida, Illinois, New York, District of Columbia, Ohio, New Jersey, Washington, and Virginia.

Some new information I found was that an estimated $9.5 billion is generated in annual revenue from trafficking activities. Between 50 and 60 percent of children who are trafficked are under the age of 16. In Thailand it was found that 60 to 70% of child prostitutes are found to be HIV positive. The child sex trade is happening all around the world. The child sex trafficking is mostly in Cambodia, Moldova, Asia, Russia, Middle East, and rural parts of Brazil.

To add to my research I researched child sex trafficking more abroad. In my first blog I mainly focused on the child sex trade in America but in this blog I talked about where it’s mostly happening and my opinion on the subject. I’ve also found more charities that are here to help end the child sex trade that can be found here. Some things I’m still left wondering about is how the government plans on protecting children and adolescents from being traded internationally. I haven’t found the answer yet but I’ve been looking around.

My research has added to the understanding of my issue in many ways. I’ve noticed that people really are trying to stop this growing industry. It caught the attention of the White House and the world. MSNBC Dateline took a trip to Cambodia to find out more about the child sex trade. They found out that some children are born into poverty and their parents sold them into the child sex trade in exchange for money. Children as young as 5 years old are being traded. In Cambodia children as young as 12 years old are considered old in this industry. In Cambodia children are sold because of family struggles. Some are lured and kidnapped.
If a child’s a virgin they can be worth as much as $600 because they’re pure. You’re allowed to keep the child for up to 3 days.

Here is the video of MSNBC Dateline’s trip to Cambodia to uncover the child sex industry.

You and the world

Stephen Eager-White

Orange Stream

The me and the world project that I’m doing is focused on child sex trafficking.  Child sex trafficking is a worldwide issue. Child sex trafficking is the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring, or receipt of persons for the purposes of commercial sexual exploitation. It’s estimated that somewhere between 700,000 and 4,000,000 women and children are trafficked each year. UNICEF reports that across the world, there are over one million children entering the sex trade every year.

I’m interested in stopping child sex trafficking because no family should have to see their child become a sex slave. At the rate of how many women and children are being sold into human trafficking a year to how many days in the year there are approximately 111,111 women and children being sold each day. Adults and children are killed and abused in this industry. Even if they do make it out the industry they’re scarred for life. Ways to protect your child from being kidnapped and being sold into sex slavery are: don’t leave you child in an isolated area, don’t leave your child unsupervised, make sure your child knows not to talk to strangers, and to scream and call for an adult if they are being taken.

What I’m wondering is what do some women and children do that makes them a target for kidnappers? Do they have a look? Do they act a certain way or is it that the victims were just at the wrong place at the wrong time? I hope to learn how UNICEF plans on strengthening the laws to protect children. Also how do they plan on raising security to prevent kidnappers from exploiting children? If you want to help end human trafficking you can help here

Negative Space

Posted by Stephen Eager-White in Art - 9 - Hull on Friday, April 27, 2012 at 9:22 am
What is negative space?

Negative space is the space around and in between the object of an image. With two different colors

Explain how you find the negative space in your cut out and your stool drawing.

I found the negative space in my cut out and in my stool drawing by seeing the empty space in between the shapes.

Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

It helps an artist to see in negative space because it gives them a chance to be more accurate with their drawing and the spaces in between.

Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings?

Seeing negative space can enhance drawings because you can see the shapes and colors easier.

Stephen's Better slide

Posted by Stephen Eager-White in Technology - Hull on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 11:52 am
On my presentation I made sure I didn't clash the COLORS so I just used the Black and White affect. I made sure the SIZE of my picture was huge by making it my background. I made sure the SIZE of my letters where huge I have a font SIZE of 144. For the SHAPE of my picture I tilted it a little bit to the right. Also I made my picture look like I was looking at the slide. For the PATTERN of my slide I made the text color the same as the color of the wall in the background, also I made the text the same color as my shirt. For the TEXTURE I softened the edges of my picture so in comparison the part of the picture I want you to look at looks more sharp. For the EMPTINESS in my slide I just had my picture and the text and left everything else blank. For the ALIGNMENT I made my text go straight while the picture is tilted slightly so you should see the text first. Watching everyone else's slides getting criticized helped me with my slide. I made my picture and text even bigger. And made my picture black and white and face the middle of the slide.
