Abstract

For my capstone I decided to create a bakery in order to see what steps people take in order to create their own business in the restaurant industry. I decided to create a vegan and gluten free bakery in order to reach a wider market of people. I made gluten free peanut butter cookies, vegan and gluten free lemon bars, vegan brownies, snickerdoodles, cheddar chive biscuits, and cupcakes. I asked the owner of Will BYOB, Chris Kearse, to show me how he prices out his dishes and how he organizes his list of ingredients. I then took what I learned from him to help me create spreadsheets that organized my costs and pricing for the different baked goods I was making. I then created a website for my bakery and actually played out the bakery in order to see if my bakery was functional. I learned a lot about the difficulties of creating a business and also dealing with the public. I showed me that having a business takes a lot of work and a lot of dedication.

This is the non-profit organization that I am going to be donating most of my profits to. They are a low cost animal clinic. They do mainly spay and neuters daily and give opportunities for vet-students to learn from the vets at PAWS.

“Flour Mixes & Substitutions.” Gluten Free & More, www.glutenfreeandmore.com/substitutions/.

This blog informs people of the different substitutes that can be used in order to make baked goods gluten free such as using xanthan gum or agar as a thickener or other kinds of flour such as oat or rice flour. It also gives you different ratios when using these substitutes compared to using normal ingredients, along with recipes for basic breads and doughs. With knowing this kind of information it makes me more informed about the recipes I am using and why the substitutes work, along with the fact I can take a recipe that is regular and make it gluten free using these substitutes.

Kearse , Chris, and Shilo Kendall. “Business at WILL.” 21 Nov. 2018.

In this interview Chris discussed with me how he prices his food and how he organizes his inventory. He creates spreadsheet with all the ingredients he uses for each recipe. He prices them out by oz. With this information he can figure out how much the dish would be by the amount of ounces per ingredient per dish. He then takes the cost and multiplies it by 5 since it is fine dining but he explained to me it is usually by 3. This is information I created my own spreadsheets for my recipes and was able to price out each individual item.

Kelly, Taylor. “Veganism Is at an All-Time High: Is It A Fleeting Fad or The New Norm?” SinglePlatform, SinglePlatform, 28 June 2018, www.singleplatform.com/blog/the-rise-of-veganism-a-fleeting-fad-or-the-new-norm.

Kelly explains in her article that from 2014 to 2017 people identifying as vegan has risen from 1% to 6%. With this increase Kelly talks about the reasons why people have become vegan, health, animal welfare, etc, along with the affects this rise in veganism has had on the restaurant industry. Since veganism has increased more restaurants have been popping up that are either entirely vegan or have many vegan options. Restaurants rely on public demand so if more people are becoming vegan they have to make an effort to comaidate for these dietary changes. With now knowing this kind of information I decided to make my bakery have vegan options due to the rise in veganism, along with having regular items in order to reach a wider range of people.

M.S., Marissa Donovan, and R.d. “Vegan Substitutes for Baking.” EatingWell, EatingWell, 6 Nov. 2017, www.eatingwell.com/article/289703/vegan-substitutes-for-baking/.

Marissa Donovan goes into the different kinds of vegan substitutes you can use and the ratios required depending on what you are trying to substitute within a recipe such as dairy and eggs. For example she explains how to make dairy-free buttermilk by using any non-dairy milk such as almond milk and adding one tablespoon of lemon juice in order to curdle the milk. With this kind of information I can then understand my vegan recipes better and understand the choices the person made, along with being able to change regular recipes into vegan recipes by using these substitutes.

Nordqvist, Christian. “Celiac Disease: Symptoms, Diagnosis, Diet, and Treatment.” Medical News Today, MediLexicon International, 15 Dec. 2017, www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/38085.php.

Nordqvist writes about what celiac is, symptoms, diagnosis, diet, and kinds of treatments. Celiac is a disorder where a person is allergic to gluten, this can lead to inflammation, malnutrition, and destruction of the lining of organs when gluten is consumed. Around 1 in every 141 Americans have celiac making it a more common disorder than many believe. It affects mainly caucasian females and can be treated with a gluten free diet. Nordqvist mentions what foods people with celiac should avoid, bread, some processed soups, granola, etc. With now knowing this kind of information I decided to make my bakery have gluten free options due to the fact that I want to make my bakery excel to people with celiac and people who are gluten free. I want to make sure that people who have dietary restrictions or allergies can find at least one this on my menu to have.

Page, Karen, et al. The Flavor Bible: the Essential Guide to Culinary Creativity, Based on the Wisdom of Americas Most Imaginative Chefs. Little, Brown and Company, 2011.

The Flavor Bible by Karen Page is a book consisting of different flavor combinations. It lists commonly used ingredients such as honey, chocolate, etc and gives a list of items underneath that pair well with the given ingredient. I use this book a lot when trying to come up with desserts in order to make sure my flavor combinations make sense and with actually work together.

SANDYWIFEY31S, et al. “Vegan Brownies Recipe.” Allrecipes, 18 Dec. 2008, www.allrecipes.com/recipe/68436/vegan-brownies/.

This is one of the recipes I will be using for my bake sale. With the brownies being vegan the making of the brownies is different from how you would make normal brownies. In this recipe you mix all of the ingredients together in one bowl. While in a normal brownie recipe you have a lot of steps such as mixing the butter and sugar in a saucepan and mixing the eggs with the cocoa powder which is more complex than the vegan brownie recipe.

Scheuer, Chris. “Ridiculously Easy Cheddar Chive Biscuits.” The Café Sucre Farine, 11 Dec. 2017, thecafesucrefarine.com/easy-cheddar-chive-biscuits/.

Scheuer’s recipe is extremely easy to follow and is the best recipe for cheddar chive biscuits I have found so far. I have tried it many times in the past and it has worked anytime. It gives you the recipe for a basic biscuit dough which I can then manipulate in order to create many different kinds of biscuits which is helpful when making a bakery since you need to change up your items to keep people interested in my products.

snap_admin. “How To Market Your Bakery (14 Crucial Tips & Resources).” Deneen Pottery, Deneen Pottery, 10 Jan. 2019, deneenpottery.com/marketing-bakery-2/.

Deneen Pottery created a section within their website showing people how to market their bakeries. They give tips on how to keep people coming in the door and to keep people interested in your product. They mention how you need to tempt your customers by playing into trends such as using charcoal within products to make them black or making gluten free and vegan options. Use social media or create a website in order to show people your product and explain the purpose behind your bakery in order to draw people in. This will help me when I am trying to market my bakery to SLA students and how to draw them in so that I can make a profit.

The Women in Dracula

In this episode we focused on the role women play within the novel. We compared the men’s actions to that of the women’s actions within the book. We spoke a lot about Mina’s influences on the books plot and other characters and compared her personality to that of other women’s throughout the book, such as, Lucy. We also speak on the seductive, sexy, and erotic actions of the vampire women and why they are portrayed the way they are.

Horror in a Nutshell

Blood. Screaming. Gore. What comes to mind? Horror, specifically horror movies. Horror is a very disturbing and strange genre of movies. Movies such as Silence of the Lambs and American Psycho are all based on serial killers, and others such as The Exorcist and  The Omen are all based on Satan. These topics are taboo and make it uncomfortable to watch with the amount of detail some movies go into, such as in Henry. The genre focuses on the fears of people and puts them into the movie in order to get a reaction. Horror movies reflect the major fears of the parents living during the times the movies were produced.

In the early 80s, a popular book that came to light during that time was Michelle Remembers. It was a book written by Michelle’s psychiatrist about Michelle’s experience being a child in a satanic cult. She talks about how she felt and what they did to her. She didn’t just start to remember, but expressed it in  movements as if she was possessed. Through this, people started to become terrified of satanism. It produced the idea “about Satanic cults abducting, sexually abusing, and murdering American children.”(PEOPLE) People then started to fear satanism and become extremely cautious around other people who weren’t the same as them. It made people paranoid and worried that something would happen to them or their children. It also created a front for what satanism actually was. With this common idea, the movie, Children of the Corn, which was produced in 1984 at the beginning of the “Satanic Panic”. It is about a small town surrounded by a corn field. The town is controlled by a cult of children who sacrifice adults to an evil spirit that lives in the corn. Children of the Corn earned $14,568,989 in America at the time it was out (IMdb). This movie brought in the fears of Satan and its involvement with children to the front, which was a terrifying thing for many adults and was a common paranoia about their children getting involved with the devil. This movie hit the terrors of every American during the time period.

Starting in the 60s into the 70s, a group of people started to form. They fought for social change, peace, and protested war. This movement was the hippie movement. Due to their laid-back lifestyle and difference in political beliefs to most of the people at the time, they were feared by parents. They didn’t want their children to become involved with the movement. Hippies did a lot of drugs, along with living in communes and not having a normal job or no job at all. Parents didn’t want this for their children. A popular movie towards the middle of the hippie movement was Texas Chainsaw Massacre. This movie earned $30,568,000 in the USA when it was out. Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a movie about a group of hippies that are traveling across Texas in order to see one of their friend’s childhood homes. They then run into a hitchhiker that marks their car, which then leads to their deaths from that man’s psychotic family. This movie took every fear that parents had about hippies an put it into a movie. Having the people who are hippies in their mid 20s pick of a hitchhiker, along with be extremely laid back the whole movie shows parents how their children could end up as the people in the movie, possibly ending with their children dying, further evoking fear into the people of America.

In the early 2000s, the topic of teaching abstinence started to come up more frequently as a bad way of teaching sex education to teenagers across the country. Abstinence teaching is when the teacher does teach the facts about sex and how to be safe, but also to avoid sex in general till you are married. Most parents prefer this method since to them it helps them believe that their children will not have sex till they are older due to the fear of pregnancy and adultery. It Follows was a movie that came out somewhat recently in 2014. It earned $14,367,301 in the US by 2015 (IMdb). It is a based around the idea of having premarital sex. The movie starts with a couple who have sex in a car. The woman then wakes up, the man apologizes for what he has done to her, and then he leaves. A spirit then follows her around till it is close enough to kill her. The only way to pass it on is through having sex with someone else. This movie focuses on the fear of sex and how once a person has it, there is no way of stopping them from doing it again, which is contributes to the fears of parents. The idea of sex has always terrified parents when it comes to their children. This movie makes sex the forefront and can instill more fear into the parents.

If parents would stop to think about it they would realize that the movements in the societies they are living in are not a threat to their children. When making horror movies, filmmakers should pick the themes that scare parents because it makes the movie richer and more suspenseful. With this, if horror movies did not focus on the fears of parents they would not make an impact.

The Costs in Modern Day Relationships

Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew, is a book about a family at odds due to marriage. The play involves many characters and subplots with specific characters, but there is one subplot that is the forefront of the play. This is Bianca's suitors, Hortensio and Lucentio, as they fight over who will marry Bianca. In comparison, Wes Anderson's Rushmore has a similar plot to Taming of the Shrew. In Rushmore, the main character, Max Fisher, is in love with a teacher, Mrs.Cross. Max does everything possible to be with her but he does not know of his recent close friend, Mr.Blume, also taking a romantic interest in Mrs.Cross.

In both of these pieces there is a fight for the love of another. Max and Hortensio both desire to be with the girl of their dreams but there is another person in the way. Even though Max is more extreme with his wooing than Hortensio, they still both end up getting out-staged by the other man, or in this case Mr. Blume and Lucentio. Max tries to change himself in order to woo Mrs.Cross through extreme ways. Both Lucentio and Hortensio do the same by disguising themselves as teachers to get closer to Bianca, in order to woo the one they love. Audiences expect that the characters have to work hard to win the affection of someone they love. But, in modern day media, people expect to see the costs that go along with fight for the other person's love.

"Bianca: Call you this "gamut"? Tut, I like it not. Old fashions please me best. I am not so nice To [change] true rules for [odd] inventions. "

(Act 3, Scene 2, 82-84)

In the Taming of the Shrew, Bianca is getting taught a musical scale from Hortensio, who adds a secret message into it to woo Bianca into marrying him. Her response was that she was strongly not interested in him. She then left. Hortensio tried to woo Bianca but she denied his attempt. Hortensio was doing something extremely similar to Lucentio to describe his situation, but it did not work out in his favor as it did for Lucentio. Hortensio did not work very hard for Bianca's love, yet he demanded throughout the musical scale that she will be his.

A similar situation happened in Rushmore between Max Fisher and Mrs.Cross.

Image result for rushmore gif

In Rushmore, Max walked up to Mrs.Cross while she was grading papers in the library. He poured her a glass of lemonade and sat down across from her with some random school books. She then looked at him and said, “has it even crossed your mind that you are far too young for me. We don’t have a relationship Max.” Before this, Max restored the Latin language program at Rushmore due to Mrs.Cross’ love for it and then proceeded to try and build an aquarium for the many fish in her class room. Even though Max went through with all of these things for Mrs.Cross, he was still denied her love.

This was similar to how Hortensio tried to woo Bianca with his gamuet, but within the movie, Max wanted to be with Mrs. Cross, no matter what the cost. Max did not give up after this interaction with Mrs.Cross, nor did he when he found out Mr.Blume was romantically involved with her. This shows how now audiences want to see risks being taken in order to be with the person the character is pursuing. While in Taming of the Shrew Hortensio attepted once to be with Bianca and never tried again, in modern day pieces, giving up is not an option.

"Bianca: Now let me see if I can conster (interpret) it. Hic ibat Simois, I know you not; hic est [Sigeia] tellus, I trust you not; Hic [seterat] Priami, take heed he hear us not; regia, presume not; celsa senis, despair not. "

(Act 3, Scene 1, 44-47)

In the Taming of the Shrew, Lucentio preceeded to teach Bianca Latin while Hortensio tried to tune his instrument. As Lucentio talked, he snuck in a secret message stating who he really was and how he felt about her. She understood his message and created one of her own. She did not completely reject him, but she wanted to get to know him. After Lucentio’s one attempt of trying to be with Bianca, he was accepted by her even though he disguised himself as someone else in order to be near her. It shows how Bianca doesn’t care who he is but only cares that he is willing to be with her.

A similar romantic interaction happens in Rushmore between Mrs.Cross and Mr.Blume.

Image result for rushmore gif

In Rushmore, Mr.Blume takes an interest in Mrs.Cross. Over time, he stalks her and stops by her house in order to see her. He went to her house, knocked on the door, and waited for her to come out. He asked her if she wanted to go for a walk and she didn’t reject. This moment then sparked their romantic relationship. Through this moment they talked about their lives which connected them even further. They then kissed.

This was similar to the way Lucentio and Bianca’s first romantic encounter went. Lucentio wasn’t denied and they ended up getting married. After Mrs.Cross and Mr.Blume’s first romantic interaction went, they eventually kissed. But unlike Taming of the Shrew, Mr.Blume does not end up marrying or being with Mrs.Cross at all. She finds out Mr.Blume is married and dumps him, but he still tries to win her over. This shows how audiences like it when there is a loving relationship, but like to see the risks people are taking, such as Mr.Blume cheating on his wife in order to make himself happy, unlike Taming of the Shrew where a young man wanted to be with a pretty girl and it happened.

"Hortensio: But I have cause to pry into this pendant. Methinks he looks as though he were in love. Yet if thy thoughts, Bianca, be so humble To cast thy wand’ring eyes on every stale, Seize thee that list! If once I find thee ranging, Hortensio will be quit with thee by changing."

(Act 3, Scene 2, 90-95)

In the Taming of the Shrew, Hortensio was rejected and stated his last argument on why Bianca should pick him or even think about marrying him instead of Lucentio. This is the last we hear of Hortensio till it comes to Lucentio and Bianca’s wedding, which he is involved in. Lucentio and Hortensio never actually fight or try to hurt the other through this process of trying to be with Bianca. This shows how there was work to get to this position, but that Hortensio easily gave up since he knew he would never have the chance of being with her.

In Rushmore, Max is the king of revenge.

Image result for payback scene rushmore gif

In Rushmore, Max finds out about Mrs,Cross and Mr.Blume’s relationship. Max then feels the need to destroy Mr.Blume’s life in order for him to have a chance again. Max ruins Mr.Blume’s marriage and his relationship with Mrs.Cross by talking to Mr.Blume's wife about her husbands cheating. Mr.Blume then spirals out of control and runs over Max’s bike. This feud goes on for awhile till Max moves on and Mr.Blume becomes depressed.

Max and Blume’s interaction after Max finding out about Mrs.Cross is very different from Lucentio and Hortensio’s interaction. Hortensio lets Lucentio be, as a sort of silent surrender and praise of Lucentio winning. In Rushmore, Max and Blume have a full raged war over who can destroy the other, leading to both of them losing the girl.

Max moved on in the end of the movie and was happy with Margaret Yang, his new girlfriend, which further shows how people only want to see the costs and a happy end result, no matter who won. In the Taming of the Shrew, Hortensio did move on but was unsatisfied by his choice in who he married. He was upset and hated his wife. Through this it shows how in modern day pieces, the costs are the climax to keep the audience interested, while the end leaves them satisfied with a happy relationship as the outcome. This shows how audiences like to see the risks taken by the characters for someone they love.

Best Personal Essay - The Tales of Hair

Posted by Shilo Kendall in English 3 · Pahomov · A Band on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at 6:56 pm

Hair has always been a hard subject for me. How do you want it cut? How short? How long? Why do you have so much hair on your arms? You missed a spot. Growing up I always thought about hair as something that defines you, that hair gives you character, that hair gives you your identity. My mother always had crazy hair; blue bob, blue and bleached mohawk, and other combinations. Everyone always loved her hair so I thought my hair might mean something to me. You can style it, dye it, cut it, crimp it, you can do anything to your hair. That's what I love the most about it, but of course I was cursed, with dark, thick, hair. This left me with the hairiest arms and legs known to mankind. I was never praised for any of the hair on my body, it was more a disadvantage than anything else.

As I walked up to the lunch line, my young 3rd grade self never saw her coming. I felt a presence near me. My long thick dark brown hair that was to my lower back was lifted. I felt the wind rush to my neck. I turned around wiping the person behind me with my lushes locks. A 5ft tall girl was standing behind me. Maxine. I saw one of my hairs fall from her fingers to the ground. I looked her in the eyes as I said, “Don’t touch my hair.”

The girl stared at me with her short bob of blonde hair and her glazed blue eyes. She replied,“It is just so pretty. I like to touch it.”

“ Well I don’t want you to so don’t.” I was two people away from the front.

I grabbed the boats of crackers and cheese sticks and walked off to sit on the yellow bench of the cafeteria table. That wasn’t the last time she struck. Everyday I would get in the lunch line and like a car trying to start I heard her engine roar then choke out as she stopped right behind me. One touch and I would turn around and smack her hand. Sometimes I was too late.

One day I was standing in line waiting for everyone to get back from the bathroom. As we were waiting, Ms.Johnson would scan over the line of children but she stayed a little too long on three people, Maxine, Joyce, and I. I scratched my head, why are staring at me? Am I doing something wrong? Maybe I should step a little more into line. As I side stepped into line everyone was back from the bathrooms. We climbed up the stairs. I stopped on the platform to turn to go up the other flight. My arm was grabbed tugging me back.

“Shilo, go to the nurse please.”

“Okay Ms.Johnson.” I went through the second floor doors. The nurse looked at me. I looked to my right and what do you know Maxine is here. I sat in the small chair closest to the door. My eyes were glaring in the direction of Maxine as she went up to the nurse. Maxine’s hair was checked for lice. Lice? What is that? Well I found out as the nurse pulled a tiny little 6 legged insect from the top of Maxine’s head. My eyes widened. It was then my turn. I walked up to the dreaded chair. The nurse checked all over my thick head of hair. It was 2:30 pm when she started but as the time passed nothing was found. 3:01pm an egg was found in my hair. I was devastated. After that moment a rumor went around saying I gave Maxine lice. I hated my hair. I hated how thick it was. I hated Maxine for making me hate myself. I missed the last day of school because of my lice infestation. No one talked to me.

As I grew older I realized that the lice infestation that wreaked what seemed like my entire life from then on, didn’t affect my life at all. No one knew or cared about anyone else's past because we were in 7th grade getting lockers and finally being able to switch classes. We were working on a memoir project in english towards the beginning of the year. Mrs.Greenberg, the english teacher from hell, wanted us to all come up with ideas for our memoirs. I have a go to memoir idea, my dog Buster. She let us think for 15 minutes. After those 15 minutes were up she put us into pairs. As she assigned them I knew as per usual that I was going to get the worst partner. “William, Guang, and..” Please not me, “Shilo.” My whole face slouched, gravity took over every feature. Of course I was in the only group of three due to our odd numbered class size. Everyone moved to their partners or in my case, group. We formed our t shaped formation right next to the window and a little away from Mrs.Greenberg’s desk. I started first, Guang went next. He started off with pointing at my arm. I looked all over my arm to see what he was pointing at, I set it back down. “What.” Guang said, “You have very hairy arms.”

I looked at my arms. I never realized how hairy they were, he repeated it, “You have very hairy arms,” I felt like Murph from the Yellow Birds when the chapel collapsed. I just wanted to curl up into a ball.

That evening I went home and shaved off all of my arm hair. I was so ashamed to have it. As I was shaving my arms I realized my legs were hairy too. I shaved them. I just went on a shaving frenzy shaving every visible hair possible. I hid my arms the rest of the week because I didn’t want Guang or anyone else to know I felt defeated. I hated everyone from McCall after that point. My hair had helped cause my downfall. At the end of 8th grade I shaved half my head and was made fun of the whole rest of my time there. I was pointed at and talked about, sometimes in another language. I couldn’t wait to go to high school.

My freshman year, I thought everything was going well, I had friends, a boyfriend,  I felt proud of myself. I shaved my head so that bleach blonde mess of a side was gone leaving my dark brown buzzed hair in its place. I was at 30th street station, where I would normally go after school. I was sitting at a table near the entrance off of Market and 30th. I got up and walked over to the subway. I was looking at all of the drinks they had. I grabbed the Coca Cola. I heard a man's voice as I turned around to walk to the counter, “Is that all you want mister.” MISTER. He just called me mister. My body was paralyzed that I forgot to answer the question. There was a lump in my throat as the answer rolled out of my mouth, “yup.” I paid and left. Not just left the subway but left 30th street station. I just walked home. Mister. Do I look like a man? I could feel the tears building up behind my eyes. Throughout my life, I had been mistaken for a boy a couple of times, due to my tomboyish charm that I embraced when I was younger. I looked like a boy. Do I have manish features? The longer I thought about it the more it came true. I looked like a man. I couldn’t even look in the mirror without thinking of punching the reflection of myself. He could have just made a mistake? But he looked me in the eyes.

Throughout my life I have changed my hair so many times that the rest of myself changed as well. Everyone would always tell me how amazing it was. How cool I was for dying it or cutting it in a “unique” style. I would always thank them and say I love it but, how did it look good. That is all I could think about, are they looking at me or they looking past me, but I’m the idiot that answered. People either hate it or love it and I never understood how I couldn’t have a straight opinion of my hair. It seems like I just hate it but sometimes I wake up and love it then when I see myself again I hate it. It’s mine, I should have a clear opinion but I don’t think I ever will. I have grown to love it the older I have gotten. All I know is after high school there will be nothing holding me back.

Trends of Modern Day America

Posted by Shilo Kendall in English 3 · Pahomov · A Band on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 10:51 am

Trends of Modern Day America

In modern America, every decade has had its own fashion trend that sparked the nation, such as leather pants in the 80’s and flannels in the 90’s. Nowadays, however, it seems that America is no longer coming up with a new trend for this decade specifically. This is because the fashion industry can’t create any new trends. Fashion designers have taken a nostalgic approach for the fashion of today and make these trends popular by celebrity involvement.

Nostalgia is a wistful desire to return in thought or fact to a former time in one's life (Dictionary.com). This emotion can be triggered by objects, settings, people, or events. Other emotions can trigger it as well such as loneliness. Despite these negative connotations, humans like the feeling of nostalgia. In reference to a study done by Batcho, a psychologist who is referred to in Self Continuity, compared to younger adults, older adults have higher self-concept clarity and engage more often in remembrance. Older adults reminisce in the past more often than younger adults. Since most of the people in the fashion industry in charge of designing outfits for popular celebrities are older -- such as Marni Senofonte, designer for Kendall Jenner and Beyonce--they are specifically picking the styles that they grew up wearing in order to feel a “sentimental longing” for the past. For example, Kendall Jenner who has been seen wearing high waisted jeans, oversized coats, and crop tops. All of those styles were popular in the 1980s. This then causes present-day fashion trends to be from past decades and to be popular due to famous celebrities.

Due to the influence of nostalgia in the fashion industry, styles have moved more towards an 80’s look, which includes mixing and matching fabrics and patterns. Leather and leggings have become a staple. There was also the punk scene which brought the idea of DIY clothes such as patching and ripped jeans. Examples of what is sold in stores today are pre-patched jackets, leather jackets and skirts, leggings, and chokers (Forever 21), similar to  popular items in the 80’s. Fashion designers are feeling nostalgic to the eras they grew up in. This then causes them to focus on past decades and take those styles as inspiration or direct reference to create the fashion of the today. Fashion designers want to see the world of fashion fall into the past to make themselves feel nostalgic. They do this by having popular celebrities such as Cara Delevingne, who has worn leather jackets and t-shirts similar to Winona Ryder, a celebrity who started her career in the late 80s. Winona Ryder was and still is a heartthrob for most people who grew up in the 80’s. Everyone wanted to be like her, similar to how people see Cara Delevingne. According to Vogue Cara Delevingne is bringing back the tracksuit, an 80’s trend, as an airport style. These celebrity outfits were put together by designers who think about the past and incorporate it into celebrity outfits.

On the other hand, the 90’s brought denim into extreme popularity, along with music influencing what people wore, similar to punk in the 80’s. Grunge introduced flannels and brought back ripped jeans, creating “the rocker” style (Kass). Today those styles have been brought back and made popular. Trends that are coming back are oversized blazers, flannels, high waisted jeans, acid washed jeans, ripped jeans, and band shirts. Fashion designers such as Senofonte are dressing their clients, Kendall Jenner and Hailey Baldwin for example, in a “90’s vibe’ because they are reminiscing in the past. Fashion designers are even bringing out their own clothes such as Senofonte, Kendall Jenner’s designer, who states, “Kendall’s been wearing some of my old clothes I had in storage.” This then brings 90’s clothes into popularity. The fashion of today has brought people to a nostalgic place. The “90’s style” is now sold in popular stores like Urban Outfitters to make these styles more accessible to the younger generation, making these nostalgic items popular.

When asked, people might say that there is no way there couldn't be something new that has been created in fashion, but on closer inspection, everything that is popular today was once popular in past decades, showing that we can't create new fashion. It’s not that the fashion industry just doesn’t want to create something new; it is that they can’t. They feel the need to dress celebrities in old fashion in order to bring it back. Fashion designers want to remain in the past in order to create a nostalgic feeling for the past in the present.

E2U4 Murals: Shilo Kendall

Posted by Shilo Kendall in Spanish 2 · Hernandez · B Band on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at 8:10 am

Vivo en  la frontera del sur y centro de la ciudad. Mi barrio es normal y  molestoso. He vivido allí por 15 años.

Me gusta mi diseño.

Historical Murals

Posted by Shilo Kendall in Spanish 2 · Hernandez · B Band on Monday, March 6, 2017 at 2:44 pm

Tribute to Edward “Chick” Davis is a mural created by John Lewis on 15th and South. This mural is to pay tribute to Edward Davis who was a local pool player. Edward Davis was a well known pool player in Philadelphia. When he started playing pool it was during a time of discrimination. A lot of the time he was not allowed to play or contribute to the game of pool. Instead of playing at this discriminatory places he opened up 3 pool places. This mural is near one of the sites of his pool places. It is painted in muted browns and blues and has him playing pool which is what e=he was known for.

The Triangle

Posted by Shilo Kendall in Spanish 2 · Hernandez · B Band on Sunday, March 5, 2017 at 12:15 pm

I would put my mural on the wall near the triangle between South and Bainbridge on 23rd. The triangle was turned into a place that people could gather for entertainment such as music, movies, and for the most part food. This Triangle was redone by the SOSNA community. They are currently trying to raise money for The Triangles On Grays Ferry Avenue Gateway Project. SOSNA wants to make the triangular intersections down Grays Ferry less confusing and safer for drivers and pedestrians by adding places for people to socialize and to have an attractive space in the community. Ever since the reconstruction they have put on a festival during the summer called Plazapalooza in that area where people in the neighborhood come together. There is live music and food. My mural would add to what the triangle is trying to do by presenting a song name introducing new music to the community and bringing art where there is hardly any.

Mi Vida

Soy Yo

Los recuerdos desde mi infancia

Los llevo siempre conmigo

La hija de mis padres

Mi mascota de mi hermana mayor

Veo los colores de las pinturas

Saboreo dulces y pasteles

Oigo los sonidos de música y risotada

Huelo las velas y comidas

Toco el pelo de mi mascota

Viajar, nunca voy a olvidarlo

Nado en los lagos de Wisconsin

Corro con los venados

Balio con los árboles de Ohio

Somos productos de Filadelfia

Vivo en Filadelfia

Hablamos inglés

La lengua de música y cultura

No somos Centro Americanos

No somos Costarricenses

Somos Americanos

Y somos orgullosos

Rationale, William Huang and Shilo Kendall

Posted by Shilo Kendall in English 1 - Giknis - X on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at 6:50 am

The purpose of this project was to show our knowledge of Macbeth in a creative outlet. My partner was William. We decided that we would start with the idea for the cover first. We had a debate between a sea turning red, a hand reaching for a dagger, or a combination of both. We then finally decided to do Macbeth’s hand reaching for the dagger because it was our favorite scene. We did not  incorporate the sea because there would be too much going on at once. With the cover, we decided to have it hand-drawn because we thought it would be the easiest to do it in that manner. We then moved on to the characters. We decided to completely make up the characters so that we could be super creative with their bios. We also decided to have Macbeth performed at the Arden Theatre because it’s a local theater we would like to support. After that, we decided who would do what and when they should do it with a calendar that we made.

Shilo William

  • character descriptions and drawings - description and drawings of stages

  • design layout - summary

  • characters bio - design layout

  • rationale   - rationale

  • advertisements - some of the character description

We chose Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, The Witches, and Macduff to create descriptions and drawings for because they are all very important aspects of the play. They cause conflict, insanity, etc. The settings we chose are as follows: outside Macbeth’s castle before and after Duncan’s death, Macbeth’s castle, Macduff’s castle, cave where the witches were hiding, murder scene of Duncan, and forest where Banquo and Fleance were pursued (war ground is the same forest). We choose these because these were the main settings throughout the play. Typically speaking, people only watch a play when they already know the story behind it. There is a summary found on the back of the playbill, but it is only a general overview.

With the advertisements, we wanted to showcase the local bars, pubs, restaurants, and stores in the Arden Theatre area because it made the most sense. We wouldn’t want to advertise something in Columbus, Ohio when we are in Philadelphia. Also I have been to the Arden Theatre before and I have seen some the advertisements they have, which were all local shops and such in the area.

The stage is designed for everyone in the room to be able to see the action. It consists of course of the main stage, curtains in the front for scene changes, a screen as the backdrop for easy background changes, and four columns of seats with exits in between each.

The audience is welcomed into the production by the Rota Fortunae, or wheel of fortune. As the opening set, it is meant to reappear whenever Macbeth does something to change his fate. The wheel is shown each time with a rotating animation created with the screen backdrop. The shield with the "M" represents Macbeth. Whenever something good happens to him, his shield slowly moves toward the top of the wheel. Whenever something bad happens, his shield starts to rotate to the bottom. When his life comes to an end, the shield falls off of the wheel.

We looked at several examples of different playbills to base the design and layout of the components. After trying google presentations, we changed to using lucidpress. We found easier to set up the playbill and it looks nicer. This was pretty much our decision-making process.

Growing Up Online Reflection, Kendall

Posted by Shilo Kendall in Technology - Freshman - Hull - b1 on Monday, January 11, 2016 at 4:54 pm
We watched Growing Up Online and Digital Nation. These shows were about the people who grow up with the internet always around. It shows how people used it. The most memorable thing about this show was Ryan and his tragic story. It is important to watch shows like this because you can learn from the people in the movie and how to utilize technology. To keep my future family safe online I will give a limit to how long they can be online. It is important to talk to your family about internet safety because they are a lot things on the internet that we should all be aware of. A piece of advice to give parents that don’t know how to keep their children safe online is to monitor them.

New Slide, Kendall

Reflection

I learned from my peers that the font was hard to read, the picture was blurry, had to fix the heart, and add more things to the slide. With this information I changed the font from corsiva to abel to make it easier to read. Then I centered the words a little more in the heart but still had it bleed off the slide. Also I found a way to not have the image blurry and added the thought bubble for the cat to add more things to the slide to make it feel less empty. To finish it off I angled the heart towards the cat to direct your eye to the cat.

My Slide, Kendall

Posted by Shilo Kendall in Technology - Freshman - Hull - b1 on Monday, November 23, 2015 at 8:29 am
Tech Sign

This slide is used to represent what I cherish in life, music and animals. I choose to make the words the my main focus, so they could start from the left and look to the right sort of allow their eyes to go in that direction. I made the heart a dull red so that so that it would blend well with the rest of the sign and the letter a light green to allow the letter to contrast well with the bright red heart. The picture was to show how music and animals can relate to each other. I also choose this one to choose a life situation instead of an animated version to allow a connection with the person seeing it.

Who Am I Online? Shilo Kendall

Posted by Shilo Kendall in Technology - Freshman - Hull - b1 on Monday, October 26, 2015 at 10:26 am
  1. Today we watched a video called I am a witness. It was about bullying and how we should stand up for someone who is getting bullied. The activity we did in class was seeing what our impression is on the internet and whether  it is a good or bad impression. This video makes me think of if you don't speak up about someone being bullied then you are as bad as the bully. I appear as myself sort of there are of course other people who come up but the things there are about me are mostly true. By the way I am not 40. The perceive as safe on the internet because there is hardly any info on me when you look me up, except for false information about me.The goal of the internet troll is to cause conflict and feed off your reactions. The positive results of anonymity is that you can say what you want without being known, but the negative result is that you may be found out and criticized.

  1.  My service provider is Comcast. The internet is connected to my modem/router combo by a coax cable. Everything is wireless in my house so I have 3 phones, Wii, IPad, 2 laptops, PS 3, TV, and Apple TV.
  2.  I learned that most of the things we have are wireless.
  3. They need to know how much their network is.
