Semaj Smith Photo Essay Benchmark.

Posted by Semaj Smith in Globalization - Laufenberg on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at 5:55 pm
I think the most challenging portion of this project was actually taking the pictures because I couldn't just take any picture. I needed to take a picture with explanations in mind, knowing why I thought they related to my topic. I really just let the images come to me, there wasn't any specific time when I just went out looking for pictures, I went through my day as usual and then when I felt it most important or calling, I took my camera out and took pictures of whatever moved me.

I think my favorite picture is the picture of the subway doors. I say that because I honestly feel like that picture says more than 1000 words. I think that anyone who steps behind those doors everyday has a lot going for them, it's very hard to put into words but so much goes on behind those doors and they travel all over the place, picking up many different people that its hard to draw one main point from those doors. That picture makes you think and reflect.

I think the evidence of globalization is very prevalent in Philadelphia, I sort of feel like Philadelphia is and has been on a downward spiral that is just towering to the ground. I do think that there are larger cities that you can see the evidence in because I think that the larger the city is the easier it is for it to fall apart. So I do believe that there are other cities that are just as large if not larger than Philadelphia that show just as much if not more evidence of globalization.

Semaj Smith Five Point Framework Benchmark

Posted by Semaj Smith in Globalization - Laufenberg on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at 9:41 pm
The countries that I selected for this project were Kazakhstan and Algeria because those are the two countries that I have been working closely with all semester. My process for this benchmark was a little all over the place. I took a little bit of design from every example given to us and from those examples I made my own presentation. I used links and photos to try to relay my points and messages in the best way and I just pieced together information as I found it.

I think that the five point framework was very easy and straight forward for the most part. The only perplexing point that I came across was "Society's response to it's environment" because there aren't many people in these countries that get the opportunity to speak up so finding their actual opinions and reactions is very difficult. I felt like I needed to research the environment and the people and piece together the reactions of the people.

If I were to change something about my project it would be the design and some of the depth in my points. Some of my points I think could have been a little stronger and I feel like my design aspect of this benchmark didn't meet my usual designs. I think that had I thought harder and tried to be more creative my design would have been way better. Although this benchmark was tedious I enjoyed putting it all together.

Screen Shot 2012-02-20 at 6.29.45 PMIn this exercise I think I was the most accurate when it came to females that were able and unable to read and write. I'm not too sure why this was the case because as I was doing this category I really just wanted to give women an advantage that I feel like they don't really have in the real world and when I put all the information together I realized that I was dead on in what I thought and predicted for the women of this world.

Screen Shot 2012-02-20 at 6.29.59 PM
I was the most inaccurate when it came to females with and without a secondary education. Again I tried to give women the benefit of the doubt because i feel like often times women are looked down on and their education isn't valued as much as males so I tried to have a higher portion of women have a secondary education and I ended up being wrong.

I was really shocked to see that not a lot of women had a secondary level of education. I always thought that women were the ones that usually continued their education and men didn't so when I saw that it wasn't really true I was a little taken back. I was also shocked to see how close I was to the males that had and didnt have a secondary education. Although apart of me knew that the numbers weren't as high women I was still expecting higher numbers than what I saw.  Screen Shot 2012-02-20 at 6.30.39 PM

Receiving A License To Carry A Concealed Weapon In Philadelphia.

Samantha Boyd and I chose to partner up to apply for a license to carry a concealed firearm in Philadelphia. I thought this process would be an excessive amount of work so when Ms.Laufenberg gave us this bureaucratic “task” to do I was a little uneasy about the whole thing.

My partner and I googled the process it took in order to apply for a license to carry a firearm in Philadelphia. We found out that all you really needed to do was fill out papers and supply a few documents. We printed out our papers and filled them out the way we would if we were to actually apply for the license.

The paper work was extremely easy to fill out, it wasn’t too long and over the top or worded in a way that left any type of confusion. Everything the papers asked was straight forward and was completed in a day.

If I could change one thing about the bureaucratic process that I flow charted about it would be the questions that are asked. I say this because a lot of the questions were extremely repetitive . Also I would add a little more information about how someone could go about completing this process if they didn’t have the necessary items. For example, if a person was convicted of a crime and they wanted to get a gun license I would go into detail about what they can do to receive their license even with these convictions.

I think the systems have become so complicated because there are a lot more issues and details that need to be addressed within our society so to try to ensure the safety and simplicity of our society certain precautions need to be made to make the jobs of people in the system easier.

I found this project to be extremely fun and interesting. I liked feeling like I was actually going through the movements knowing that these were the actual steps to receiving a firearm license. I liked feeling like I was apart of our larger working system as a people.

Here's the link to our actual FlowChart.

I think this is a good year for my issue, so far there are 29 elected officials that cosponsor the bill on the electoral college.  I would say that there is a good amount of media behind my issue, there are many articles such as this one that say the Electoral College is past its prime.                                         question-2123489
My opponents on this issue would be any representative that has benefited from the electoral college. There are some people that are in favor of the electoral college and have many arguments as to why the electoral college should stay in place.   There has been a joint resolution written up that states that the President and Vice President will be elected jointly but they have to have the most votes in favor of their team to be officially elected.
I think the public is extremely essential to this outcome because if they all take the time to raise their voices we could get a faster and more effective response on what we want and need as a people.   I think if I can get some city officials on my side or at east get them to listen to me then I can make more of a difference because I will have an adult support system to back me up on what I’m saying.
45164654_electoral_college_s1 ( Electoral Votes in 2009)

There are many officials working on this event especially all 29 of the cosponsors that are trying to pass this bill before the next election.  I don’t think there is too much for me to coordinate but if I could get in contact with Councilman Chaka Fattah I could just let him know that I a interested in what he stood for and I would like to be apart of abolishing the electoral college then that would be a perfect start to making moves.

I think I can influence people my age because I know how to relate to them to make them care about issues. There is no specific timeframe for my issue but it would be amazing if this bill could be passed before the next election so that all votes are held and accounted for the way they are cast.

ELECTORA  So far no dates have been set to move forward with this bill but there has been some progress and actions made which is progression already.

Lobbying Post: #2 {Chaka Fattah}

I am a member of the 8th district in Philadelphia and I am represented by Congressman Chaka Fattah. Congressman Chaka Fattah attended Overbrook High School where he graduated from and then went on to the Community College of Philadelphia and then the University of Pennsylvania’s Fels Institute of Government where he later received his MGA in the year 1986. Fattah has been a member of the Pennsylvania HOR for 5 years and he has served as the State Senator for 6.

Congressman Chaka Fattah supports many things and has sponsored 6 Bills that all support a different thing but when looking through all of the things Chaka Fattah has supported I see that he is all about children and equality

When it comes to the topic of the electoral college Congressman Chaka Fattah was one of the co-supporters in the Bill H.J.RES.36: “Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to abolish the Electoral College and provide for the direct election of the President and Vice President by the popular vote of all citizens of the United States regardless of place of reside”

When it comes to things we have in common there isn’t much between Chaka Fattah and myself. We both went to schools in the Philadelphia School District, we share the same religion which is a Baptist Christian and we are both democrats that reside in the city of Philadelphia.

Perry V. New Hampshire

Posted by Semaj Smith in American Government - Laufenberg on Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at 7:04 pm
handcuffs

The Supreme Case I was assigned was Perry V. New Hampshire

The situation behind this case is that in an apartment building there was a hijacker that had been robbing cars for a while and one night an elderly woman looked outside of her window and saw a black man standing between cars talking to a police officer in the parking lot. The elderly woman, when questioned told police that he had been the man breaking into cars at night, when the elderly woman was asked to identify the man from an array of photos she could not do so and the only problem the Court agreed to look over was whether or not the absence of any police manipulation of that witness was reliable enough to bring before the jury to be used against the conviction of Barion Perry.

The constitutional question in plain English  is “In a case should a court be required to exclude eyewitness identification evidence whenever the identification was made under circumstances that make the identification unreliable?”

The Constitutional Provision involved in my case is The Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. Which states that “No State shall ... deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.” U.S. CONST. amend. XIV, § 1.

The Fourteenth Amendment is applicable to unreliable eyewitness identifications regardless of whether the identification was orchestrated by the police.

After the case was argued The Supreme Court decided that it wasn’t their job or place to decide whether or not the evidence in the case should be used and that the decision of permissible evidence would be left up to the jury. The conviction of Barion Perry still hasn’t been decided mainly because of the evidence debate.

I’m not to sure how to predict the outcome of this case because it could go in either direction. I personally don’t believe this evidence should

Be used against Perry because I feel like the evidence is unreliable. The witness didn’t see Perry take anything and she was not able to identify him when she was asked. The conclusion of this case is strictly dependant upon the jury so at this point and time this could end either way.

My Food Slide

A Play On Saladworks Sophie’s Salad.

Makes: 4 Servings

Time: About 20 Minutes

Ingredients

-       1 bag or head of Organic lettuce (Any brand)

-       ½ Apple

-       2 handfuls of lo Mein noodles

-       2 handfuls of croutons (If preferred)

-       1 chicken

-       ½ Cup of shredded cheddar cheese

-       ½ cup of walnuts (Or any nut you’d like)

-        Raspberry Vinaigrette  Salad Dressing or Oriental Sesame Salad Dressing (Desired Amount)

Directions

- Grill Chicken Breast and cut into long stripes and then dice chicken up

-  Cut up head of organic lettuce and put into a large serving bowl or pour bag of lettuce into serving bowl

- Cut apple half into bite size cubes and put into a separate bowl with your ½ cup of walnuts and shredded cheese (All of these ingredients will be kept together to prevent wilting and sogginess of other ingredients)

-  Hand mix apples, cheese and walnuts together to even out the portions

- Pour apple, walnut, and cheese mix into the serving bowl with lettuce

- Lastly, Sprinkle Lo Mein noodles and croutons onto the salad mix and pour on desired amount of salad dressing

-- Grab a bowl and Enjoy!

I believe that depending on the type of each ingredient you purchase that determines how much of this meal is processed and how much is whole food. For example, if you were to purchase organic chicken breast as oppose to the processed chicken breast that would drastically change the percentage of processed food in the meal.

Since I usually change the original recipe to my liking and what I’m in the mood for the calories are very different each time I make this dish so below is the nutritional information for the original Sophie’s Salad.

I’m positive that each ingredient in my salad came from the U.S.  I don’t believe any of these ingredients would have to travel any extreme distance. Again, I would say that depending on the type of ingredient you were to purchase that would determine how organic the meal was

I believe that all together this meal cost around $25.00 and serves 4 people and sometimes more if you were to use bigger portions of the ingredients. I believe that a huge corporation would be Perdue  because they are well known chicken producers and the chances of people paying the extra amount of money to get organic chicken breast and this salad can’t be made without chicken so usually people settle for companies such as Perdue.

My Self Reflection

I really enjoyed this unit because I learned a lot about some things I had never even heard of especially while watching the Food, Inc. Movie. There were some things in this unit I already knew and my knowledge was just increased and then there were things such as the “Pig Scolder” that I knew nothing about.

My role in the larger food system would definitely be a consumer because most if not all of my money is spent on fast food.  I can honestly say I order or pick up an order of French fries once a week.

The biggest problem with our food system is that nothing is real anymore. Everything that we are served as a society is processed or shot up with hormones in some sort of way and the foods that are real and organic are way out the average price range of families so they can never afford to eat the way they should.

Some changes that I could make to my food choices are that I could spend less money on take out and fast foods by making more meals at home that are more healthy for me such as organic. Instead of trying to order out everyday I could make my lunch at home which would be healthier and cheaper.

Once I made these changes not only would I actually have money during the week but I’d be way healthier and it would probably help me do things with less of struggles such as walking to the 5th floor of the building everyday.

Honestly, I’m not willing to give up fast food because I enjoy eating French fries too much. If there was a way to get healthier fries for the same price as fast food and they tasted just as good as the unhealthy fries I would be more incline to stop eating fast food.

Born-Alive Infants Protection Act of 2002. on Prezi

I wanted to chose a bill that I could really get into and that would hold my attention for more than 5 minutes and the only thing that I could think of was children. So I researched bills that dealt with children and the bill that stood out the most was the "Born- Alive Infants Protection Act of 2002" Once I started reading into what the bill was and what it stood for I was hooked.
I chose to do a Prezi because I personally think everyone chooses to a Keynote or an iMovie which eventually gets boring once a teacher has seen 32 of those types of presentations. A prezi to me is more fun because you can literally chose any path and format that you want and it looks creative. Although Prezi is very hard to figure out once the product is finished it looks really amazing.
While completing this project some of my challenges were trying to find the actual timeline for my bill. I found many important dates but I couldn't find an actual list of all of the events that took place to make this bill a law.
I think if I were to do this project over I would chose a different form of presentation just because I found out there were so many other ways I could have presented this that would have been more unique than a Prezi. Also, I would try to find some video on my bill so that my presentation was a little more interactive.
From all of my research I understand and realize that there was no time wasted when it came to this bill, the bill was passed within a day with no changes or arguments about it so I know that it was taken very serious.
The process was easier than I though it would be because I though I woud need to dig deep into history to find out simple things on my bil but every time I researched my topic there were new things I learned about that I was able to incorporate into my timelines.

Electoral College Reform.

Posted by Semaj Smith in American Government - Laufenberg on Friday, October 14, 2011 at 2:41 pm
For my lobbying project I will be lobbying against the electoral college. The electoral college is a compromise between election of the president by Congress and election by popular vote. The people of the United States vote for the electors who then vote for the President. I feel like we the people should be able to vote on who we want to represent us and our votes should be the actual reasons the candidate is put into The White House. If there are any opponents of allowing our votes to be the actual deciding votes of our president and representatives would be candidates who usually win or get higher votes from the electoral college. I think the people who vote would be the main supporters of my topic because they can feel like their votes are being counted and their voice is being heard for what they actually have to say.

The pending legislation dealing with The Electoral College is the:

H.J.Res.36 - Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to abolish the Electoral College and provide for the direct election of the President and Vice President by the popular vote of all citizens of the United States regardless of place of residence.

I believe this can really help my lobbying topic because with this and the graphs and explanations that let people know exactly how their votes are being used and counted if counted at all will really make people stop and think twice about whether or not they agree with the electoral college.

4th Quarter Benchmark

Posted by Semaj Smith in American History - Laufenberg on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at 12:40 am
What I liked the most about this project was that I completely got to change history and make my own timeline and events the most challenging thing for me was creating my own primary source documents.  I think the most interesting event I investigated was the the death of Lincoln because I learned and recreated some really interesting things. The individual actions of people impact history in very serious ways because the actions of one person makes other people think and try new things so without the initial action everything else has to be recreated.

One decision can be extremely influential because every idea has snowballed off of someone else's idea or action so when one person makes a decision it's the starting point for many other ideas. Systemic changes impact the historical record because a system is a body of one, it's a bunch of ideas and decisions so when the system changes something or makes a decision everyone tends to follow which shapes the outcome and future of history.
I think my project could be improved by going into a little more detail during different portions of my video, If I had to redo this project I would map out my video so that it was easier for me to piece the information together.

Semaj's Instrumental Blog Post #2

Posted by Semaj Smith in Physics - Echols on Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 10:17 am
To remind you of what we talked about in my last blog, I chose to build a guitar of my own for my physics project. In this blog post I will talk to you about the sound vibrations, pitch and the materials I will need to use to build my instrument.

Sound from a guitar is produced by plucking or strumming the strings which are all different sizes to my understanding there are six strings on guitar and each strong makes a different sound while holding your finger down on different sections of the neck. When you pluck or strum the strings the strings vibrate from where your finger is on the neck down to the end of the body of the guitar.

To change the pitch of my instrument I will have to adjust the machine heads also known as the tuners, I would have to turn these tuners to the left or the right in order to get a high or low pitch. There are many parts to a guitar but I think the important physical characteristics would have to be 16 out of the 20 parts of the guitar.

  1. Headstock
  2. Nut
  3. Machine heads (or pegheads, tuning keys, tuning machines, tuners)
  4. Frets
  5. Truss rod
  6. Inlays
  7. Neck
  8. 8.     Body
  9. 9.     Pickups
  10. 10.   Electronics
  11. 11.   Bridge
  12. 12.   Pickguard
  13. 13.   Soundboard
  14. 14.   Sound hole
  15. 15.   Strings
  16. 16.   Fretboard (or Fingerboard)

To build this guitar I will need wood to build the body, some plastic pieces for different parts of the guitar, some twisted screws for the machine heads, wire and thin metal piping for the fret board and I will need different sized plastic string for the actual strings of the guitar. All of these materials should be able to cover the necessary components of the guitar.

I will construct this instrument in my Advanced Engineering class that way I have all the materials I need at my fingertips, If that time id not enough I will also take extra time out of my day to stay after school to try to complete the guitar.

Semaj's Instrumental Blog Post #1

For my Physics Benchmark my group will have to form a band with our own homemade instruments. The instrument I would like to focus on is the guitar, I would like to build this instrument because growing up I always wanted to play the guitar but I was never able to take lessons so this would give me a perfect opportunity to play this instrument.

The guitar is played by plucking a set of strings and sliding your fingers down the long fretted neck of the guitar that makes different sounds when touched in different places which would be the way you changed a note by moving your finger to different places on the neck of the guitar.

There are two types of guitars, there is the acoustic and the electric. The basic shape of a guitar I would describe as the figure eight with a hole directly in the center of the body on an acoustic guitar. However, an electric guitar doesn’t have a hole in the center of the body. They both have different but very similar shapes, both types of guitars have 12 components minimum but an acoustic guitar has 20 total.  Below is a picture of both types of guitars with their matching and different parts labeled.

Screen shot 2011-05-20 at 7.53.57 AM

I believe that the hole in the body of the guitar combined with the way you move your fingers on the fret board have something to do with the way you create and change the sounds that come out of the guitar. I believe that when the stings on a guitar are plucked they send some type of vibration or wave through the fret board and that causes the strings to make the different sounds that they make causing them to turn into different sound waves.

Semaj Smith Second Quarter Artwork

Posted by Semaj Smith in Advanced Art - Hull on Friday, January 14, 2011 at 8:19 am
For our second quarter project we were given the opportunity to create whatever type of artwork we wanted to. I personally loved the idea of this because it gave me freedom to express my feelings in many different ways and show the many different sides of who I am. I decided to go with a more poetic project this quarter and express my everyday feelings in a poetry portfolio with images of myself that shows who I really am on an everyday basis. I chose to do this type of project because I know there is a secret side to me that nobody ever gets to see and I thought it would be good for everyone to take a look into my mind and see the way I really feel about the things I go through in life. This project is not fully completed yet because I have to take my time and go with my emotions when I write and I know I have more to let out so when I feel like I have shown all the sides of me that I want to show I will print all of my poetry and photos and put them in a portfolio book so that the work can be seen up close.

If I were to do this project differently I think I would try to dig deeper into who I am and try to really get raw with my emotions. I think I was a little scared to let people into my heart and soul with my work this time so next time I would get more real with myself and come to terms with who I am before I tried to let other people know who I am.

In the photos below there are just a few samples of some of the poetry I have already completed and some of the photos of myself that I edited and created to show the sides of who I am. Because my writing is so personal and close to me and how I'm feeling not all work could be uploaded but here's some of who I am I hope you enjoy what you see.

  1. Q.  What Motivated you to come out and vote?

A.  My motivation to come vote was the fact that I know if I don't vote, nothing will change. Also, I can't complain that things aren't right if if I don't do my part and participate.

  1. Q. What would you like to see changed in our political system?

    A. I would like for there to be more equality for everyone.

  2. Q.Do you vote in every election? (How regularly do you vote?)

    A. I vote in every election for the most part.

  3. Q. Do you know why we vote on Tuesday?

    A. Years ago, Tuesday was the least busy day for farmers to leave their farms so it was easier to come out and vote.

  4. Q.Where have you encountered the highest amount of ad campaigning?

    A. The Television.

  5. Q. What was the most memorable campaign ad that you have encountered?

    A. It was a rap done my Mayoral candidate Chaka Fattah.

  6. Q. Are you always sure of who you are going to vote for when you walk into the booth or are you still deliberating?

    A. I usually know who I'm voting for, but there are times when I need to think about it a little bit longer.

  7. Q.What changes do you hope to see in Philadelphia as a result of this election?

    A. I would like to see more money go to education and for there to be more city programs for the youth.

  8. Q. What impact do you feel your vote will have on the election?

    A. I feel like I had a part in who will win. If my candidate wins I'll be able to say "I helped do that"

  9. Q. Did you learn about voting in school? If yes, did that impact your willingness to vote today?

    A. I learned about voting from a few places, School, media and my mother and they all had an impact on my willingness to vote today.

My Extra-Credit Reflection: On November 2, 2010. I stood on the corner of my street and passed out informational cards about the rights of voting. Although not an abnormal abundance of people come through my neighborhood enough come through to get the word out about voting. As I stood on the corner passing out flyers I noticed the expressions of peoples faces as they read the information showed me that they didn't know all of the information on the card. A few people that took cards told me that they had already voted earlier that morning and that I should vote as soon as I get the opportunity. People were shocked to find out I was 16 and I was spending my time off of school to get out the word on voting. I feel like by me handing out information on voting I helped spread the word to a larger community.. There wasn't one person that turned me away. After today I feel like when people are more informed they definitely care more. I liked this extra credit assignment I really feel like I helped make a potential difference.
