Art 2 Q2 Artist Statement
This marking period in art, we worked on many different assignments. These included: Blind Contouring, Adding Color to Blind Contour, Make a Painting, Recreate a Piece of Art, Illustrate a Piece of Writing and Edit a Photo.
The first two assignments went hand in hand. We had to close our eyes and draw something without lifting the pencil from off of the table. We then ad to color those same drawings. This was my favorite piece from this quarter, it was fun and relaxing in a way. A few of the things I drew were a stuffed animal, a basketball player and a telescope.
The next assignment was Make a Painting. We had to create anything we wanted to, we just had to paint it. I decided to paint the Dominican Republic flag, since that is where I am from. I used the colors red white and blue because those are the colors of the flag, and also used green for the leaves on the flag. I painted the letters in gold.
Next, was Recreate a piece of Art. I recreated a painting based off of ¨El Dia De Los Muertos¨, ¨Day of the Dead¨. Painting the background of this piece was fun. I mixed colors like green, yellow and brown all together. The Painting was two skeletons(a couple) which goes with the entire theme of the day of the dead in Mexico.
After that assignment came the Illustrating a piece of writing. The piece of writing I chose was an album by my favorite spanish artist Ozuna, his album was named ¨Odisea¨. The The used paint to raw the album color which included a brown stuffed bear in a hoodie, with his name in the hoodie and his album logo in black on the top.
The last Assignment of the year was photo editing. I took two pictures and used an app to edit it. I added filters and played around with things such as enhancements.
Overall, this marking period in art I drew a lot of inspiration from my life and my identity. For instance, My flag represents where I am from and the illustrate a piece of writing represents my taste in music.
Ashton Reigner Q2 Art
I had a lot of inspiration for my art this quarter. Everything I created has an explanation. One thing I looked for is how I could make something that sampled things from other art. For this I looked to music and famous paintings that I felt had their own source of inspiration. While creating my drawings I used pastels and colored pencils mostly. I like to put as much contrasting color in my art as possible and these were two mediums that would allow me to do so. When I do my art though, I like to be in a certain state. When in the classroom, it’s hard for me to concentrate and open my mind up to create whatever it is I want to create. This is why I like to do all my art at home. When I’m at my house in my room, alone, I get fully concentrated and that is when I produce my best art.
Carolines Q2 - Art
This quarter, I created some abstract and creative art pieces for my assigned projects that go from drawings all the way to paintings and photo editing. I chose the abstract and creative route while doing these art assignments because I wanted to let loose on my art abilities and see what other kinds of drawings I could create. Some of my most important sources of art are old record covers. Record covers have very amazing art because they are always built around the music. Every record has a story which I adore, because it makes each one unique. It helps motivate me to not be scared about what I create. Which leads into my next source of idea, which is music. Artists and songs are really good for me to think about and listen to while drawing because it creates this whole new world of art for me that I didn't really know I had. For each of my drawings, I attempted to do more of a sketch approach while drawing, which is not like what I did for Quarter 1. For the outcome of my art, I wanted things to appear a tad messy in the end. I used to always want everything very perfect growing up, but now I love the look of trying to make something look flawed. It gives each piece a lot of character. For my materials, I prefer watercolors and colored pencils as materials. I don't like the look of markers in my drawings because I believe that once you use markers, there is no room to improve the work. Markers appear so permanent and intense. This is why I prefer lighter. During this quarter I learned about blind contour, which I have never really done before. I thought it was really interesting to see how creative my mind can be while not being able to see my paper. Some special materials that I used were acrylic paint. I am usually most comfortable with watercolor, so using some more intense paint was very cool. During my studio time, I planned out my next steps for my new art, as well as sketching. During this quarter, I was collaborating with my fellow peers who I never talked to before. It was really different to connect with people who have a similar interest as you. I would like people to know that I made an effort to different strategies compared to last quarter. I spent more time on my pieces and put some thought into them.

A lot of the art I created in this quarter were different versions of art from the same assignment. Namely, these were 10 blind contour drawings, 10 blind contour drawings with color, and 10 versions of a picture of a chicken I took on a road trip to Plymouth through different filters. Two more pieces of art I made were a recreation of The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh and an illustration of my interpretation of the Parting of the Red Sea. I also painted a picture of the sky, but I didn’t have enough blue, so I used purple, red, and a bit of green. This is why I named the painting “Improvised Sky.” I come up for inspiration for art the same way I come up with inspiration for stories: they can pop into my head at any time. I could just be minding my own business, when suddenly an idea hits me.
I used my same strategy of drawing a rough draft in my sketchbook, and then making the good copy on a separate piece of paper. I still prefer colored pencils, but using paint can also be fun. I learned that experimenting with different filters and frames on the same photo can make two completely different and really cool. An example of this is using the night vision filter and the film frame to make a scene of a chicken in a documentary filmed at night, and using the monochrome filter and the old photo frame to make an old and somewhat spooky black and white chicken picture. I still use a sketchbook to draw out rough drafts and ideas.
I spend my studio time working on my current art assignment, or on something else if I’m already done. I learned that you don’t have to draw something to make art, you can just have some fun with a few photo filters.
