Alexis McCormick's Capstone

Posted by Alexis Mc Cormick in Capstone - Echols - Wed on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 10:23 am

My name is Alexis McCormick, I am currently a senior at Science Leadership Academy. I'm part of Rosalind Echols’ wonderful advisory. When it’s time to be a senior at SLA, everyone is required to do a year-long project that will be presented to other classes and teachers from around the school. This project isn’t easy at all! A capstone is supposed to be meaningful, showcase what was learned over the past four years at a project-based school, give back to the community, and something that is interesting. For my own contribution, I created a piece called “Rockets Wise Words” that has work that is established with both the senior class of 2015 as well as myself. My original plan for my SLA senior time capsule fell through, but with a little twist, I was still able to incorporate the senior class. For my capstone, a physical piece that is displayed near the office at SLA will hold positive, encouraging messages from the class of 2015 to the younger classmen of our school. The bigger picture of my project is not to have people to walk by and just observe my piece but to actually read what was written and hopefully use in later years of being a student at SLA as well as later in life. Many students wrote tips, tricks, and messages that helped them advance to senior year and hope to help others. “Rockets Wise Words” will be a piece that can show other classes that they can move forward and get their goals accomplished.

  1. Steve Hoefer, dir. "Zoey 101: Season 2, Episode 2." Time Capsule. Nickelodeon. Http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0754877/, 18 Sept. 2005. Television.

This preteen based show is located on nickelodeon taken place in an on campus high school that tells the lives of a group of friends. On season, two episode two the story line was taken place in a class room with a different kind of assignment. The assignment that was given was to create a inclass time capsule. Freshmen year I watched this episode and thought about my senior capstone. Creating a time capsule for the class of 2015 which would hopefully be continued as a tradition for each senior class at Science Leadership Academy. The main character Zoey created a documentary of her life so for my part in the time capsule I will be creating a video that tells my four years at SLA.

  1. "How to Create a Time Capsule." WikiHow. N.p., 02 Jan. 2007. Web. <http://www.wikihow.com/Create-a-Time-Capsule>.

This website is very informative and shows different ideas of how to create time capsules. The website lays out step by step on how to create a successful time capsule and ways to make sure people are actually excited for the time capsule altogether. Something else that was also very helpful that was shown in the website is the fact that there are sample letters that are done to help lay out different ideas that you may want to include in a write up. This is good because for the capstone that is being created for each contributor there is a short write up to explain why which ever item was put into the 2015 time capsule and what does it represent the year at SLA for that person.

  1. Seibert, Patricia. We Were Here: A Short History of Time Capsules. Brookfield, CT: Millbrook, 2002. Print.

This is a book that is very helpful in many different ways. It tells about different time periods and holding different types of time capsules. This book is basically the backstory of a time capsule. If you want to know anything about a time capsule, what was the first time capsule ever made, of just different ways to make a time capsule this book is recommended. This book was both interesting and informations also useful to get great understand on what a time capsule really is and the exact meaning for one. To see change, advantagement, disadvantagement, and what just remained the same.

  1. Matt Novak. "First Video of the Steve Jobs Time Capsule Being Unearthed."Paleofuture. N.p., 12 Feb. 2014. Web. <http://paleofuture.gizmodo.com/first-video-of-the-steve-jobs-time-capsule-being-uneart-1521353151>

Steve Jobs was someone who created a very big change in a lot of people’s lives today. The creator of apple made a time capsule that was recently dug up with very unique items inside. Being placed in the groups for years this time capsule made many people gather because of the significant meaning. The reaction of people who witnessed what was uncovered and that is what makes this article interesting. How surprised people were with the positive revealing moment. Something else that was also interesting about this article is that it holds different information that is laid out with great detail. Something along the lines of how much time is took to move the dirt away from the actual time capsule itself which lead to believe that it would be more successful to store the trunk for this capstone instead of actually bury it like a normal time capsule would be stored.

  1. JAMIE FRATER. "Top 10 Incredible Time Capsules - Listverse." Listverse. N.p., 27 Apr. 2009. Web. <http://listverse.com/2009/04/27/top-10-incredible-time-capsules/>.

This article was very useful on how to create an eye catching, creative time capsule. This website links a handful of other time capsule projects that were recognized for its uniqueness and the backstory that follows it. The article links to one of the biggest time capsules that was ever created. This time capsule was an actual older model car with different things inside. From the passage it tells the backstory of wanting to see how different the world changes in the sense of cars, gasoline, and other things along that line. This article is very useful in the sense of helping thinking about different ideas that will make the capstone time capsule different, unique, and memorable so it will be continued with the future SLA senior classes.

  1. Jefferson Graham. "Redirecting." Redirecting. N.p., 20 Aug. 2012. Web. <http://www.google.com/url?q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.usatoday.com%2Fstory%2Ftech%2Fcolumnist%2Ftalkingtech%2F2014%2F08%2F20%2Fhow-to-make-a-smartphone-time-capsule-video%2F14262385%2F&sa=D&sntz=1&usg=AFQjCNEyJBvWvRd02Xh0JtzESQGdRuoM5w>.

This was a documentary that was built about a digital time capsule. The reason why this source would be useful for this capstone is because the plan is to create a documentary of the past years at SLA. Recommendations were made, thoughts pointed out, and different ideas that would be helpful when creating the actual documentary was a large part of this source. Something that is relatable was that the digital time capsule was made for a woman who is about to start her journey in college. It was made to be looked back on a few years in the future to see what was accomplished and to be recognized.

  1. Jill Neimark. "How Faith – and Fear – Created the World's First Time Capsule - The Crux." The Crux. N.p., 08 Aug. 2014. Web. <http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/crux/2014/08/08/worlds-first-time-capsule/#.VMqUdV7F8Yc>.

This article holds facts about the first ever time capsule. This is relevant because it is important to understand where things originated from and how much they advanced throughout the years went by. The article explain in great detail what was in the time capsule itself and what each item importance to the word today. The article was extremely helpful information that concludes on how things can change so much and the thought that should be put behind each and every item that is being place in the time capsule to be looked on in a few years in the future.

  1. "Budget Cooking: Feed 4 for $10." Cooking Light. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://www.cookinglight.com/food/everyday-menus/healthy-budget-recipes/chicken-rice-mushrooms-budget-cooking-recipe>.

Marshal Brian created a time capsule of his life. Each an every day was documented because each day was another chance to experience and look back on. The purpose for his time capsule was for his children to look back on and see how beautiful life was when they were too young to remember and notice it. This website holds different meaningful clips of his life that helps generate thoughts that could be including in the documentary of my life at SLA. There is no limit to what has to be placed in the time capsule. This video helps gather ideas to propose to the students that are going to contribute to the capstone time capsule of 2015.

  1. "WELCOME ABOARD." TimeCapsuleToMars. (TC2M), n.d. Web. <http://www.timecapsuletomars.com/>.

An extremely interesting project that was came acrossed dealt with sending a time capsule to the planet mars. The creators of this project was student based and meant to be an exploring project. When you think of sending a time capsule to mars you think about that being an adventure itself but there is more meaning to this project. The creators wanted to show the people in the future who travel to mar see how much the earth changes in the future and what different things that could be looked back on. The mission is to raise money and make this happen. Though this project doesn't really contribute that much to my project it does show a good message. It shows there the sky's the limit to anything, literally.

  1. Zurowski. "My Time Capsule Project." N.p., n.d. Web. <http%3A%2F%2Fczurowski.weebly.com%2Fproject-1--time-capsule.html%5C>.

This was a website that was created for a project done for an assignment for school. This source was a different way of creating a fully digital way of view the capstone time capsule for the 2015 class. This website was very useful in the way of how to lay things out for a final product and what I should and should not include to make the project to make it as successful as it could be. The project had a high tech way of turning something that you bury for memory to the changing way of technology. Throughout the website there were different tips that were suggested that turned the creators time capsule as successful as it was.

Abstract
For my senior capstone project I analyzed the different grade theme questions and did my best to answer them along with the core values. Along with that I also chose projects that I thought represented some of the things that I learned while doing this project and showed some of the work that we did in the past couple of years and why based on these different themes. When I first began this process of researching and trying to figure out what I wanted to say and what I wanted my project to say about me I learned a lot about why we did some of the things we did in the past couple of years that at the time felt frustrating. By interviewing people and learning about their projects I got to see how they interpreted certain things from their perspective and that helped me better understand why I was doing this project as a whole. In some areas I would say that this could be used as a teaching tool for example projects but I go into briefly about the the dangers the school's within the school district faced and how we've grown from that as a whole. I also go into explain how institutions differ in the city because I've been to three extremely different ones. Most of my process included researching and writing. My final product is a website with the projects on them that outlines everything that I learned through finishing this project.

Annotated Bibliography
  • Jack Mackie Pictures. Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide. Prod. Scott Fellows and Apollo ProScreen GmbH & Co. Filmproduktion KG. TEENick. Santa Clarita, California, 07 Sept. 2003. Television. This source provides me information about how a directional piece is written and how it might actually benefit people. It provided people with a service from their peers; someone that they were comfortable confiding in which is very important at this age. I selected this source because for people coming of age they're at that time when they "hate their parents" or they feel no one understands them and there's a lot of stress because you constantly hear how you have to be molding your future at this point and time. I found this source useful because it's essentially what I was trying to do with my capstone. One limitation of this source was for one it's fictional but again that doesn't mean the situations always were.

  • Barber, Bruce. Web log post. Bruce Barber's Real Life Survival Guide. Cindy Papish Gerber, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. < http://reallifesurvivalguide.com/ >. This source is a great example of how I might want my blog to look. Not only does it have different recorded observations from all aspects of life but provides great advice in reference to other people's. It's a blog with a question component so it can always be adjusted to fit people's needs if some may arise. I selected this source because it provides a good reference point for how I want to create my website. It's extremely useful because it'll give me a range of ideas of topics I might want to cover. Although this is geared towards an older audience it's still very relevant information that comes in handy which is what I want to provide people.

  • City of Philadelphia. "Phila.Gov | Office of the District Attorney : R. Seth Williams." Phila.Gov | Office of the District Attorney : R. Seth Williams. City of Philadelphia, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://www.phila.gov/districtattorney/crimeprevention_youthaidpanel.html >. This source is the program that I represented while on the Youth Safety Task Force. The Philadelphia Youth Aid Panel's purpose is to help juvenile offenders avoid trial by providing them services and directing them to a more productive lifestyle. This is a very important program especially in Philadelphia because of all the budget cuts kids turning to negative lifestyle choices is a serious concern. This source provides me with more information on what the panel does and what my participation looked like. I selected this source because it's a huge issue when it comes to young kids in schools that aren't funded as well as they should be. Kids who make a mistake shouldn't immediately be thrown into the system, no one benefits from that. Everyone deserves a second chance, but my blog or whatever could help deter them from that in the first place.

  • "Rookie." Rookie. Say Media, n.d. Web. 28 Jan. 2015. < http://www.rookiemag.com/ >. Rookie Magazine is an online magazine with dozens of young women writing about the everyday quandaries that girls face. It isn't all bad they cover so many topics that it's hard to define Rookie in one word. They empower young women by honestly discussing different aspects of life from love to school to friends and everything in between. This source provides me with a way to construct my blog and things that I may want to write about that are more relevant to people my age. I selected this source because I found it really interesting and raw. This source was extremely useful because it gives great advice on certain situations that isn't always easy to discuss with your parents. Rookie Mag is a great source that really embodies everything self help and lifestyle.

  • Lattanzio, Vince. "Thousands of Students Walkout, Protest Budget Cuts."NBC 10 Philadelphia. NBC 10 Philadelphia, 18 May 2013. Web. 21 May 2015. <http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/Philly-Teachers-Protest-Budget-Cuts-Student-Walkouts-207850051.html>.

NBC 10 Philadelphia is an extremely trustworthy news source. It specializes in current events that are directly correlated to Philadelphia. This source provided me with a more in depth idea of what we were fighting for during the time budget cuts in the Philadelphia School District were creating a very strong public response. This source helped me become more aware of how drastic the situation actually was and what that meant for students around the city. This source allowed me to appreciate the education I have received in the past four years.

  • J.R. Masterman. "Our Mission." Masterman School. J.R. Masterman, n.d. Web. 20 May 2015. <http%253A%252F%252Fwww.mastermanschool.org%252Fpages%252FMasterman_Julia%252FGeneral_Information%252F9164831668580819890%252FOur_Mission%2B>.

This source is the mission of Masterman High school and outlines what they look for in students in one simple sentence. This source helped me see the similarities and differences in the students taken there compared to SLA and how the learning styles differ as well. Because school has obviously been a huge part of my life seeing the differences in how I’ve been taught over the years helps me learn more about myself. I chose this source because it was important for me to analyze how education differs even around the city.

  • Lehman, Chris. Family Night. 2006. Guide to SLA. Science Leadership Academy, Philadelphia. <https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/388597/Classof2016FamilyNightGuide.pdf>

I chose this source because it clearly outlines how things operate at Science Leadership Academy. This source helped me analyze what really makes SLA unique which was pretty much what my whole project entailed because of the things we do here. The Family Night Guide talks about what to expect when you start school here and explains the different themes for each grade and core values. This helped me extremely while doing my capstone project because I wanted to go into depth about why we do these things and how I’ve learned by answering the theme questions.

  • Lehman, Chris. "Science Leadership Academy Learn · Create · Lead."Mission and Vision — Science Leadership Academy. Science Leadership Academy, 2006. Web. 20 May 2015. <http://scienceleadership.org/pages/Mission_and_Vision>.

The mission and vision is a critical part of SLA because it differs greatly from a regular institution within the district. This source helped me because at times it was difficult for me to put into words in what ways we were different from others by the way we did things and this helped explain why we do things the way we do at SLA. This source provided me information on the technicalities of how we are taught here including the rubric and what is expected of us and how we reach those goals every quarter.

  • Nichols, Shawn. "Theorizing on the Role of the Individual within an Organization." Saybrook University Posts. Saybrook University, n.d. Web. 20 May 2015. <https://www.saybrook.edu/rethinkingcomplexity/posts/03-01-12/theorizing-role-individual-within-organization>.

This source was about how individuals operate within an organization properly when integrating different beliefs, cultures and people. It went on to talk about how people are motivated, their attitudes and behavior and how that affects their day to day. This source provided me information about collaboration in the workplace and how group work and organizations have evolved over the years. This source helped me with my capstone project because it gave me a better idea of how I’m going to continue to collaborate with people well into my college years and so on. This is one of our five core values so learning about this was vital to completing my project

  • Thwink. "Systems Thinking." Thwink. Thwink.org, n.d. Web. 20 May 2015. <http://www.thwink.org/sustain/glossary/SystemsThinking.htm>.

This article or whatever you would like to call it, journal article, talked about the study of systems thinking and everything that goes into it and what aspects you have to look out for to be a critical systems thinker. This source gave me information about systems and what it means to think about systems. This was important information to have because one of the key themes is systems, how you interact with them, how they change and how you maintain their change. This source helped me a lot because I was able to answer a lot of the questions listed under grade 10 very effectively and efficiently. Without this source I probably wouldn’t have been able to answer the questions as meaningful as I had.

Matthew Schreiber Capstone

Posted by Matthew Schreiber in Capstone - Echols - Wed on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 7:31 am

Throughout the year I attempted to build a Stirling Engine. My goal was to make one the most cost effective materials possible. i spend hours designing my engine and figuring out all the materials I would need. However this project allowed me to see the issue of time management when it comes to designing a large process as well as how hard it may be to find materials for designs. In the end I couldn’t get all of the materials needed to finish the engine in time. This lead me to eventually design an engine based lesson plan for the new engineering teacher and my capstone mentor, Mr. Kamal, as he is trying to reinvent our engineering classroom. i looked at the SLA sample lesson plan which revolves around the same core values our capstones go by. Looking at this allowed me to design the set up for my engine lesson plan. This included how the schedule should be for the unit, what the teacher should be looking for, and the major essential questions. This lesson plan taught me the importance of trying to make a lesson that engages students and makes every single person involved with the project. Below is the lesson plan I created as well as a drawing of my engine and a photo of all the material I collected.
StirlingEngineLessonPlan (1)
StirlingEnginePhotos

American Stirling Company. "American Stirling Company." American Stirling Company. N.p., n.d. Web. 28 Jan. 2015. http://www.stirlingengine.com/

This was both a look at other designs and a look at some of the Science Behind Stirling Engines. The main thing I got from this website is that Stirling Engines can be made by a lot of Cheap materials. One of the designs I looked at was a Stirling Engine made from something as simple as a coffee cup which allows me to be very broad with the materials used in my design. The website also has a very in Depth FAQ’s section that allowed me to see answers to most of the questions I have.

Braun, Jim. "Stiling Engine Email." E-mail interview. 10 Oct. 2014.

These were conversations that I had with Mr. Kamal before I decided to make him my mentor. Afterwards he sent an email to his friend Jim Braun who worked on Stirling Engines. What he taught me was that Stirling Engines are typically Kinematic types. Meaning that they transfer energy through kinematic energy. This greatly helped me with my design because I thought Stirling Engines had to transfer energy through thermal energy. One drawback is that the email he sent back didn’t go into much detail on Stirling Engines, but the information about them being Kinematic types really helped me out with the Design.

Gras, Pierre. "Stirling Engine." Advantages and Disadvantages of. N.p., n.d. Web. 28 Jan. 2015. http://www.robertstirlingengine.com/advandisadvan.php

This link helped me when it came to describing my Stirling Engine. It gave me the advantages of a Stirling engine such as how adaptable it is and how efficient it is compared to most combustion engines. There are a few disadvantages of Stirling Engines that this website points out. Such as how the Engine is not that well unknown and is therefore deemed not popular. Another issue is that switching everyone to Stirling Engines is not yet as cost effective as it should be. One big thing it pointed out was the issue with keeping the Engine sealed, which helped with my design.

Hirata, Koichi. "Let's Build A Can Engine Step 1." Let's Build A Can Engine Step 1. N.p., n.d. Web.  30.Oct.2014 http://www.bekkoame.ne.jp/~khirata/english/aki_1.htm

This was one of the first websites I came across when finding a way to Build a Stirling Engine. I needed to see what a smaller design looked like so I could make one myself. This source gave me a lot of info and an in depth instructions on how to build the Stirling Engine that is shown. One thing that the website didn’t give me was all of the science behind each part. It only gave me the materials needed to build it and the measurements for it. I could see that each part worked, but the website wouldn’t explain why.

Infospace LLC. "How Stirling Engines Work - HowStuffWorks."HowStuffWorks. N.p., n.d. Web. 15 Nov. 2015. http://auto.howstuffworks.com/stirling-engine.htm

This was the first source that gave me a scientific explanation of how Stirling Engines work. It went as far as to explain the History behind Stirling Engines and showed me how the first Engines were built. It taught me a concept that I did not know about called the Stirling Cycle where the engine uses an “external Heat source” and that the gasses inside the Stirling Engine never leave it. This information help me get the idea that if the engine is not insulated, then the gases leak out and it’s not an actual Stirling Engine. I also learned that Stirling Engines are used in Submarines and Yachtz.

Kuprenas, John, and Matthew Frederick. 101 Things I Learned in Engineering School. Boston: Grand Central, n.d. Print.

This book wasn’t exactly for my engine itself. I am using this book as a source because it was a large influence on my engineering process. It gave 101 different tibets about Engineering in general and gave me a lot of tips, when it came to work speed and process. One tip that has already began to help is the fact that working fast does not save money. Meaning that I should take a little more time than what may be needed so that I can save money by not making mistakes. Other tips was the fact that solar energy is super useful in projects and that environmental positive impact projects (like mine) are really good.

Multiple Authors. "StirlingBuilder.com." StirlingBuilder.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Oct. 2014.http://www.stirlingbuilder.com/

This was another source that I used when trying to work on my design that was shown to me by Mr. Kamal. This one gave way more in depth designs on different Stirling Engine. This website was special because instead of giving designs made by professionals who work on these daily, it gave designs made by people who just have a similar interest in Stirling Engines. A similar drawback with this website is that it does not give me the science that I am looking for. The website is also a little harder to navigate to the different designs.

Stirling Engine." Real World Physics Problems. Real-World-Physics-Problems, n.d. Web. 28 Jan. 2015. <http://www.real-world-physics-problems.com/stirling-engine.html>.

This is one of the most useful sources that I have. It gave me the Physics behind Stirling Engines and Guidelines behind an idea of their own for Stirling Engines. I prefer this source over most because it gives diagrams to explain how the major parts of the design work. The one thing I would of like this website to do was give information about the Physics around Stirling engines in General and not just about their design. This way I could have a easier grasp about all of the information they were given men so I could apply it to my own design.

University of Caterbury. "Stirling Engine Info." - Electrical and Computer Engineering. N.p., n.d. Web. 28 Jan. 2015. http://www.elec.canterbury.ac.nz/documents/gaynor/stirling.shtml

I got another look into the Science and History behind Stirling Engines. However one unique thing that this source gave me was the idea of a Low Temperature Differential Powered Stirling Engine. This is a form of a Stirling Engine that still gets an efficient amount of Energy from the Engine, but without it needing to get to the high temperatures that Stirling Engines normally need to get too. This would be a version that would be a lot more cost efficient because you wouldn’t need to focus so much on increasing and store heat into the Engine. This source gave me a good idea on another kind of engine that I can build.

VanKouwenberg, Matthew. "Stirling Engine Conversation." Personal interview. 22 Dec. 2014.

I have been working on this project for over three years. I tried multiple times to build it, but couldn’t finish because I ran out of time. Over the last three years Mr. Vk has given me a lot of information about Stirling Engines. So I just decided to combine all of the conversations into one source. Some information includes how they work with heating and cooling as well as the environmental Benefit of the Engine. He taught me about how most of the engines needs to have an insulated Piston in order for the Engine to work. It because of my many trial and error attempts in VK’s class that made me decide on this Capstone.

Pierce Luck Capstone

This year, my capstone project was to have a frisbee clinic for the Youth. My partner Marcus Burrell and I, took new players and Junior Varsity players from the SLA school and team to teach everything we know from our experience of playing the game. The clinic was sort of like a mini camp. For 3 days, we gathered together at 31st and Chestnut to play Ultimate. Myself being an instructor, had pre-set lesson plans that I focused on during the process of the clinics. I researched drills, techniques and asked questions from a pro-Ultimate frisbee player so that I may be very precise in my teachings. Each day of the clinic was recorded and documented for myself to look back on to see what I could do better the next time. What I learned from this process, was that it's hard to be an actual teacher. It's a difference from being on one side of the prospective of playing to now having to teach. I know I am proud of what I've accomplished while teaching these kids a fun new sport that they will continue to play and enjoy while at SLA.

1. Zaslow, Eric. "About Spirit of the Game." Spirit of the Game. N.p., 29 Mar. 2005. Web. 28 Jan. 2015. <http://www.usaultimate.org/about/ultimate/spirit_of_the_game.aspx>

This source provides information about the spirit of the game which is a major concept in the sport of Ultimate Frisbee. It’s all about character of people and the true sportsmanship of the game. I selected this source because it has the 10 main points you need to know about the spirit of the game. It also tells about the spirit guidelines and rankings to gage a teams spirit (1 poor spirit, 5 high spirit). This website is really resourceful because I can use these guidelines when I teach the students about the game. This source is reliable from being on the official USA ultimate frisbee page.

2. "Why Ultimate Frisbee for Your Class?" GymClassUltimateFrisbee,. Web. 28 Jan. 2015. <http://www.gymclassultimatefrisbee.com>.

At first when I found this source it didn’t seem to be too reliable but it had good information about the game and useful techniques I could use when teaching it to the youth. It gives background information about the sport and tells all the benefits of playing. The website is broken down into the main concepts of the game, of scoring, defending, about the disc, officiating, and teaching new players, which directly corresponds with my goal. The website didn’t seem reliable because it wasn’t an official USA ultimate page but it had a lot of information which can be used. This website will help me cover all the key points of teaching this sport and it also gave me references of videos.

3. Smith, Brodie. "How To Throw A Backhand | Brodie Smith." YouTube. YouTube, 28 Mar. 2011. Web. 28 Jan. 2015. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mlf7nfKYK40>.

This is a resourceful youtube video of a very popular Frisbee player and youtube sensation Brodie Smith. He’s well known in the frisbee community with more 900,000 subscribers on YouTube. This is a teaching video showing one of the most basic throws you can perform in Frisbee. It shows technique and form. This video is a little dated but these techniques are timeless. He teaches grips and arm motions in performing the backhand throw. I can model my teachings and alterations off of his expertise of the game.

4. Statue of Liberty Flick | Brodie Smith. Dir. Brodie Smith. Perf. Brodie Smith. YouTube. YouTube, 25 Sept. 2012. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0ar7cWB2- M>.

This source didn’t seem to reliable at first because it showed techniques that weren’t popular in the Ultimate World. It is a reliable source because known player Brodie Smith invented a throw that would help in advancing the game. It was a tutorial video on how to do a new throw, called “The Statue of Liberty”. It’s a growing technique in Ultimate World that is becoming more popular. This is resourceful for my capstone because after I teach the basics, I could throw in this extra technique that could be useful in their learning. The video focused a lot on technique that I could really specify i my teachings.

5. How to Throw a Flatter, More Consistent Flick | Ultimate Rob. Dir. Rob McCleod. Perf. Rob McCleod. Ultimate Rob. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://www.ultimaterob.com/2012/10/23/ how-to-throw-a-flatter-more-consistent-flick/>. w

This is a reliable source because it is an informative video on how to do one of the most basic and well known throws in frisbee. The forehand, “flick” throw. The video is done by Rob Mcleod who is a well known frisbee player, who has a numerous amount of awards to verify that he is reliable in a frisbee background. He has an universal quote said by Michael Jordan in the article, “You can practice throwing (shooting) eight hours a day, but if your technique is wrong, then all you become is very good at throwing (shooting) the wrong way. Get the fundamentals down and the level of everything you do will rise.” This is something I could preach to my students, of working hard and performing perfect practice.

6. McGroarty, Kent P. "Benefits of Teamwork in Sports." Healthy Living. Demand Media, n.d. Web. 28 Jan. 2015. <http://healthyliving.azcentral.com/benefits-teamwork- sports-1119.html>.

This is a source that relates to my topic in broad terms of relating to all sports. It’s a webpage about the benefits of teamwork and how it relates to everyday things. This relates to my teachings because teamwork is a major point in my teaching. In the website it teaches the main points of Corporation, Socialization, Teamwork, and Accountability. This could be a major point in my teachings. It’s kind of reliable because it’s kind of what the Author thinks about these concepts rather than what they mean to sports. I selected this source because I have to teach a team sport, I would want to know the best values to teach my students.

7. How To Layout in Ultimate Frisbee | Brodie Smith. Dir. Brodie Smith. Perf. Brodie Smith. YouTube. YouTube, 9 May 2011. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=DSbU38d6wnE>.

When reviewing this source I noticed that the video was made in 2011, which would be a little dated in 2015 but the source was made by Brodie Smith a world renown Frisbee player. This source would is reliable in teaching the art of laying out in the game. Laying out is thrusting your body horizontally, on offensive ( for catches) and defensive (for blocks). Brodie Smith teaches the fundamentals and techniques of this art, so that a player may make amazing plays and be safe. This will help me in my teaching to my players as I will teach them this high risk technique in a safe way. This video source is highly useful, I can use the Brodie Smith tutorial into a lesson.

8. Tsui, Bonnie. "Ultimate Frisbee Takes Off." The New York Times. N.p., 29 Apr. 2009. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com %2F2009%2F04%2F30%2Ffashion%2F30fitness.html>.

This article by Bonnie Tsui, is about the rise of the sport of Ultimate Frisbee. Although it doesn’t protein exactly to my topic of teaching the sport it tells about the constant rise of it’s popularity over the years. How it started as a game only played by white men to now a world renown, professional sport. The article has bio’s of people’s history of the game and how it could be more than a college activity. These stories can be useful in the promotion of the sport. Even though it has grown, the goal isn’t set yet to inform everybody about this great sport. This source is reliable and will help teach my kids about the history

9. Chansky, Tamar. "Kids and Sports: Eight Strategies to Teach Kids How to Handle Disappointment and Lose like a Winner" Parenting at More4kids. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://www.more4kids.info/734/kids-and-sports-handling-disappointment/>.

This webpage was about teaching Kids about playing sport in general. It focused on teaching kids how to lose, and how to face disappointment which can be really challenging in a kids life. This website is useful because it gives specific techniques I can use in teaching my sport. These techniques aren’t directly forin 1 sport in particular, there for the love of sport and the love of the game which makes this a very useful resource to use in my teachings. I can combine these techniques with the core aspects of Ultimate Frisbee. I selected this source

page3image21320 page3image21480 page3image21640 page3image21800 page3image21960

because I want to make sure that when teaching the kids they gain more than skills for a new game but to gain character while doing so as they become good sportsman.

10 .How to Throw A Frisbee Far (Huk). Dir. Brodie Smith. Perf. Brodie Smith. Youtube. N.p., 20 June 2011. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=Trm_XZR3dA0>.

This video is a tutorial of how to throw a very long pass (huk) in the Ultimate Frisbee play. It is introduced by professional player Brodie Smith. He teached the mechanics and techniques of performing this throw. This source is useful because it will help me translate the tutorial into teaching of my own, when teaching the young players how to huk. I selected this source because I needed to know all the guidelines and techniques, so I may correctly transfer the tutorial information into a lesson plan. One limitation of the tutorial videos is that i’m not actually there to perfect the craft but the video is very specific in the techniques.

Posted by Stephen Eager-White in Capstone - Echols - Wed on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 8:26 pm

For my Senior Capstone project, I chose to tutor Algebra 1. I chose this for a couple of reasons. Math is my favorite subject and it’s the easiest subject to improve in my opinion. But, my main reason was to help others enjoy math as much as I do. A lot of students don’t particularly care for math and a common reason is because they don’t feel confident in the subject. Being a student assistant teacher for Mrs. Giorgio, I saw firsthand which students were confident in their skills and which students were more quiet and just copied down what was on the board without asking clarifying questions. With access to their grades, I could also determine which students could do better.I then chose two students who I saw had a lot of potential, but needed some extra help outside of the classroom to tutor. Together, the students and I chose about 8 standards that we would focus on to help them refine their abilities. Student teaching their class during school, and tutoring the students after school, definitely helped me become more personable and a better teacher. Without any teaching background and just Mrs. Garvey as a reference, I chose to tutor the students the best way I knew how, with visual representations and practice problems. In the beginning of the year, I noticed that not a lot of the students in Mrs. Giorgio’s classroom approached me for help, but now, no one is afraid to ask for my help anymore.

Annotated Bibliography

Senior Capstone

  1. Garvey, Erin. Personal interview. 31 Jan. 2015.

Ms. Garvey is my main source because she’s my capstone mentor. Ms. Garvey is the Algebra 1 teacher for all of my students and knows their grades, work ethic, strengths and weaknesses which is helpful for me. As a math teacher, she knows what works and what doesn’t work for students. Ms. Garvey can also give me advice on how to tutor and teach the kids algebra 1 effectively. One limitation of this source is that Ms. Garvey won’t help me create any of the quizzes or notes sheets. She’s more of a consultant. But, as my mentor, I believe that Ms. Garvey will help lead me in the right direction of success with my senior project.

  1. Khan, Salman. "Khan Academy." Khan Academy. N.p., 9 Sept. 2006. Web. 27 Jan. 2015.

I selected this source because it’s one of the main math resources that I will use during my capstone. This source provides me with everything I need when it comes to math. From pre-algebra to algebra 2, Khan Academy teaches a number of lessons that I could show the students or base my lessons off of. Another thing about Khan Academy’s website that makes it useful is that it’s easily accessible online so when they’re at home, the kids will be able to study and get instructional video help while they’re at home. It will help make my job easier.

  1. Stapel, Elizabeth. "Purplemath." Purplemath. N.p., 1998. Web. 29 Jan. 2015.

I selected this source because it’s another one of the main math resources that I will use during my capstone. This source provides me with everything I need when it comes to math. From pre-algebra to algebra 2, Purple Math teaches a number of lessons that I could show the students or base my lessons off of. Another thing about Purple Math’s website that makes it useful is that it’s easily accessible online so when they’re at home, the kids will be able to study and get instructional video help while they’re at home. It will help make my job easier.

  1. Latimer, Brad. "Personal Interview." Personal interview. 31 Jan. 2015.

Mr. Latimer is another source because she’s my capstone mentor. Mr. Latimer is a math teacher for a lot of my students, including me. As a math teacher, he knows what works and what doesn’t work for students. Mr. Latimer can also give me advice on how to tutor and teach the kids algebra 1 effectively. One limitation of this source is that Mr. Latimer won’t help me create any of the quizzes or notes sheets. She’s more of a consultant. But, as my mentor, I believe that Mr. Latimer will help lead me in the right direction of success with my senior project.

  1. "Solving Systems of Equations by Substitution." Solving Systems of Equations. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015.

I selected this source because it gives detailed notes on solving systems of equations using substitution, a lesson that the students are currently learning and struggling with. This source provides important notes, practice problems, and examples of systems of equations that can help the kids before they take their standards or their retakes. This helps push the kids to achieve their goal. Unlike other students, my students will have a note sheet that they will study from for their standards.

  1. "Solving Systems of Equations in Two Variables." Math Planet -. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015.

I selected this source because it also gives detailed notes on solving systems of equations with variables, a lesson that the students are currently learning and struggling with. I know that this will probably be one of the worst standards. So when they need to take standard retakes, this source provides important notes, practice problems, and examples of systems of equations that can help the kids before they take their standards or their retakes. This helps push the kids to achieve their goal. Unlike other students, my students will have a note sheet that they will study from for their standards.

  1. Martin, Donald. "How to Study Effectively." How to Study Effectively. How to Study Effectively, 1988. Web. 29 Jan. 2015.

This source provides information studying effectively. I chose this source because it’s important that the students learn how to study if they want to improve in math. Studying and repetition is the key to perfection. If the students study effectively, they’ll pass their quizzes easily. The source gives tips on building good study habits, taking control, making it enjoyable, and generating a positive attitude. These are all important factors in creating a helpful study session. I plan to print the key points out and present it to the students the first day of tutoring. This way they get an idea on how to make the tutoring sessions successful.

  1. Xiao, Emily. "Math Test Generator - How to Make Math Test." Wondershare. N.p., 10 May 2015. Web. 29 Jan. 2015.

I selected this source for information on how to build a quiz. This is important for my capstone because I need to create quizzes to teach my students. This source is also helpful because it provides templates that I can use for my math tests. Another feature of this source is that I can even input some of my equations and put them directly on the quizzes. The quizzes will be utilized for each topic and/or lesson that we go over during the study sessions. This essential for the students to complete so they will be able to get practice outside of school. It’s also necessary to gauge how the students are learning and how much or how little they are improving since the lesson that I gave them after school.

  1. "Finding Equations of Parallel and Perpendicular Lines." Mathshell. UC Berkley & University of Nottingham, 2012. Web. 29 Jan. 2015.

In Ms. Garvey’s Algebra 1 class the students are learning about the properties/similarities/differences between the two. Their standards are approaching and it’s time for the students to start studying. Even if I can’t present the information on parallel and perpendicular lines in times for their standard quizzes, in a poll taking in class today, the majority of the students are going to sign up for retakes after the quiz. UC Berkley’s lessons on finding the equations of Parallel and Perpendicular lines are helpful for new students who aren’t proficient in finding the equations of the lines and need video/text help when I’m not there.

  1. "Reteach: Slopes of Parallel and Perpendicular Lines." Holt Algebra 1, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015.

My final course is the Holt Algebra 1 book. This book is full of lessons of algebra 1. This book covers all of algebra 1 from beginning to end. It’ll be helpful because I can use this book for the rest of the year unlike my other sources. This educational book provides, pictures, notes, and text examples that I can print out and hand out. I plan on getting examples periodically from the book to use to help teach the kids whatever algebra 1 topic I’m teaching. One limitation of this source is that I’m going to have to make a lot of photocopies since the whole book isn’t digital. If the teachers allow me to make copies everything should be fine.

Alex Held Capstone

Posted by Alexander Held in Capstone - Echols - Wed on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 10:54 am

When deciding upon an Capstone, my fellow group mates and myself knew we wanted to create something both interactive and interesting, not only for us, but for others. Having been involved in The Franklin Institute’s Project SPACE program as volunteers for a few years, we thought it’d be a great idea to showcase what we’ve learned as a part of the program and at the same time extend that knowledge to others. Our capstone was to teach an astronomy-based mini-course to SLA freshman at The Franklin Institute. All having a different area of expertise, we decided that we each have our own week to teach what we wanted in the course. The process of becoming more familiarized with the content than we’d already been was fascinating. We were given tremendous opportunities to work with great minds in the fields of science, astronomy, and astrophysics. Although we all put in many hours doing research and organizing our course content, the most challenging part was creating a lesson plan that students would enjoy. We each taught two classes, the first four weeks would be one group of freshman, and the next four a different bunch. The point of this was to show growth, comparing the first time to the second to see what we had changed. The main goals we set out to achieve were to educate students about astronomy and all its wonders, but at the same time inspire them to actively pursue additional knowledge of it.

Darvill, Andy. "The Electromagnetic Spectrum: Home Page." The Electromagnetic Spectrum:

Home Page. N.p., n.d. Web. 28 Jan. 2015. <http://www.darvill.clara.net/emag/>.

This website suits beginners who have little to no knowledge of the electromagnetic spectrum. This is valuable to me and what I want to teach in my course because the electromagnetic spectrum is such an integral part of telescopic observation of the universe. This site gives me great analogies for how to electromagnetic spectrum works and even what uses each wavelength has in everyday life. An activity can be centered around what each wavelength can and cannot do for us. Additionally, posing a question to student that asks them why certain wavelengths are dangerous will allow them to think decide amongst themselves what the right answer is.

Fuchs, Miriam. "Teaching Astronomy." Personal interview. 23 Jan. 2014.

Miriam “Mimi” Fuchs is an employee at the Franklin Institute, who specializes in the study in red dwarf stars and most umbrella terms in astronomy. She and my group have collaborated over the past few months, along with Dr. Pitts and Dr. Stovall, on how the course would be run with what would be taught. She has given my group and I many idea for content and some suggestions for activities that will engage the audience. In our most recent meeting on Friday 1/23, she gave me and idea for an activity that would explain the way a reflecting telescope works and on a more basic level, the images that bent light creates. The idea of the activity is centered around the simplicity of the directions and the basic premise of bending light so that anyone can understand how a reflecting telescope functions without any confusing terminology or past experience necessary.

Learner, Richard. Astronomy through the Telescope. The 500-year story of the Instruments, the

Inventors, and their Discoveries. Van Nostrand Reinhold, New York 1981

This book covers the 500 year development of the telescope in astronomy. It touches on important figures and crucial points in history that were essential to the progression of telescopes and astronomy overall. The book begins with the 14th century and ends in the 18th. The 17th century was the most important time for telescopic advancement, as many of the greatest minds in astronomy and physics like Galileo, Newton, and later Kepler, developed designs that inspired some of the most famous creations in astrophotography like the Hubble Space Telescope.

Lowe, Stewart, Chris North, and Robert Simpson. "What Am I Looking At?"What Am I Looking

At? Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition 09, n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015. <http://www.chromoscope.net/1.4.1/what.html>.

This website offers its viewers a look at the universe through different wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum. Spectroscopy is the study of how matter interacts with radiated energy. Typically, through this process, astronomers via telescopes are able to classify different types of stars through the elements they have inside of them, which are seen through different colors of light and wavelengths. This website is a fascinating and educational tool for showing students how the electromagnetic spectrum works and what spectroscopy is. Many activities could be centered around this website, specifically asking students what changing the wavelengths setting allows the viewer to do. The answer would be allowing the viewer to see celestial objects emitting different types of electromagnetic radiation and that we can only see certain thing under specific wavelengths, (i.e. x-ray stars’ light can obviously only be seen in the x-ray wavelength).

Pitts, Derrick, Sc.D. "Teaching Astronomy." Personal interview. 23 Jan. 2015.

Dr. Derrick Pitts is the Chief Astronomer and Planetary Director for the Franklin Institute. He graduated from Germantown Academy in Pennsylvania, then pursued his Master’s degree from St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, and then finally received his honorary Doctorate in science from the LaSalle University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Derrick Pitts is also my mentor for my capstone, as well as serving as mentor for the other members of my capstone group. He has been and continues to be a great resource for me. In a debrief meeting that he and I had last Friday, 1/23, we spoke of the ways I could improve my understanding of how the content that i am teaching and developing different ways to convey that content. He gave me an idea for an activity involving the way light is shifted and even bent as it travels through different mediums. In the example, it asked students to describe the similarities between three mediums that appear in everyday life: water, air, and glass, which the answer was transparency. The activity is an analogy for how reflecting telescopes work and how they see light from space.

Stovall, Idris, Ph.D. "Course Reflection & Performance Evaluation." Personal interview. 23 Jan.

2015.

Dr. Idris Stovall is the Mathematician and Director of STEM Youth and School Programs at The Franklin Institute. He received his Ph.D in Mathematics from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Over the past few months, I have worked Dr. Derrick Pitts and Dr. Idris Stovall, both great minds in sciences. Idris has collaborated with my group members and I about how to course should be facilitated, specifically the meat and bones of courses, like the dates that the classes will be held, and what each of should be focusing on with our individual teaching plans. Dr. Stovall met with my group and I on Friday along with Dr. Pitts. Dr. Stovall gave me a brief rundown of my performance on Wednesday, 1/21, letting me know how I did, giving me positive and constructive critiques. He recommended different forms of reflection that could be implemented into the course. For example, one possible form of reflection he mentioned, which we both spoke about, was giving the students a pre-quiz at the beginning of every class, and finishing the course with a post quiz containing important elements from each individual class at the end of the final class.

"Hubble Essentials." HubbleSite. Astronomy Inc., n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015.

This website gives the viewer a fascinating and enriching experience as they are able to discover the journey of the Hubble Space Telescope from its launch to present day, mentioning key points of discovery and astrophotography along the way, as well as few mishaps through through the years. The Hubble website has some incredible resources and even better that can be used to easily turn heads. The website overall provides great insight on how the telescope functions and what it has done for modern astronomy. The content on the site can aid anyone who desires to learn about or convey information to others about the Hubble and its missions.

"Hydrogen Alpha Explained." Hydrogen Alpha Explained. Astronomy Know How, 2006. Web. 30

Jan. 2015. <http://www.astronomyknowhow.com/hydrogen-alpha.htm>.

This website is a great resource that teaches the importance and benefits of proper filtration of telescopes when viewing the sun. Since the sun can obviously cause far more damage to a viewer looking through a telescope without the right filter or one at all due to the intense magnification, it is important that beginners learn the reason for filters and gain the knowledge of which filters they should use for which job. The hydrogen alpha filter allows the viewer to see, yep, hydrogen on the sun. Since hydrogen in its atomic form can only exist on the parts of the sun where the temperature is cool enough, the filter will only show it on the photosphere and chromosphere. Using a H-alpha filter, viewers are able to see things like solar prominences, solar flares, and coronal mass ejections. This is vital for the course because there are two main filters used that telescopes use to observe the sun: hydrogen alpha and mylar, each showing different parts of the sun and different solar phenomena.

"Reflecting Telescopes." Reflecting Telescopes. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

This website offers a full astronomy course, covering many topics regarding space and important figures in its history. The specific page I selected covered reflecting telescopes and their development from refractors, as well as a diagram showing how most models work. This is useful for me because refractors and reflectors and the the two most important types of telescopes, even though refractors and antiquated compared to reflectors. Reflectors create an image by bending light with sets of curved mirrors that direct the light towards the eye piece. This diagram is a great segway into an activity that involves comparing the two types of telescopes, refractors and reflectors.

"Refracting Telescopes." Refracting Telescopes. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.

This website, the same as the one above, covers the mother of reflecting telescopes, refracting telescopes. Although refractors have been replaced by reflectors on a grander scale of astrophotography, refractors are not totally obsolete, and are much more affordable than refractors. The first telescopes used with lenses did not appear until roughly 400 years ago. The information on this website provides a diagram of how a refracting telescope works and also what flaws ultimately caused it to be replaced by reflecting telescopes. The people involved in the creation and widespread use of refracting telescopes are equally important as the machines they used. These figures include, Galileo, Hans Lippershey, and later Isaac Newton. All of these men are vital to the understanding of how telescopes came about.

Alexis Dean Capstone

Posted by Alexis Dean in Capstone - Echols - Wed on Friday, May 15, 2015 at 10:12 am

The purpose of a capstone is to demonstrate the learning and experiences we have had during the duration of our high school careers as well as being a student at SLA.  In my capstone I wanted to incorporate everything that I learned to form something that I could be proud to leave behind as my legacy. I wanted it to demonstate who I was and what I have learned. Which has lead me to the idea of something that has been a huge part of my life, fundraising for a cause very near to my heart. I have been walking in honor of my grandmother and the Alzheimer's Association for nine years. This was the perfect topic for my capstone. This was my chance to teach many about something that is so swept under the rug. Not many people know what Alzheimer's is or how many people it really effects. The school setting allowed for me to share my knowledge and use it as the foreground for my fundraising. I went on to create my team and raise a grand total of $1,000.00 for future research. This project has allowed me to learn more than I already knew and taught me to be a better person. It taught me how to become an advocate, how to be a team leader, how to keep people motivated, raise awareness, keep a clear plan and how to be financially responsible. I have also taken photos and created a website to showcase all the work I have done this year.

                                             Annotated Bibliography

7 Stages of Alzheimer's & Symptoms | Alzheimer's Association. (n.d.). Retrieved January 29, 2015, from http://www.alz.org/alzheimers_disease_stages_of_alzheimers.asp

This source provides a background to the seven stages of Alzheimer’s disease. I selected this source because it allows people to be able to notice and diagnose onset symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease so that they can get help if any of these symptoms are present in them or their family members. I found this source useful because when creating my pamphlet about Alzheimer’s I used these stages to make people aware of what the major stages and symptoms are and when to be able to seek help.

Alzheimer's Disease Fact Sheet. (n.d.). Retrieved January 29, 2015, from http://www.nia.nih.gov/ alzheimers/publication/alzheimers-disease-fact-sheet

This source provides basic information about Alzheimer’s disease. I selected this source because in the early stages of research you need a basic background to be able to better explain what you are working towards and why and be prepared to answer as many questions as possible. I found this source useful because it gave me answers to the general questions that people ask everyday with quick and short answers for them. One limitation was that it was only facts, no deeper research. Due to that limitation I had to further my research into the disease itself so that I am more aware of just exactly what happens and what causes it.

Frequently Asked Questions. (n.d.). Retrieved January 26, 2015, from http:// www.brightfocus.org/alzheimers/questions/frequentlyasked.html

This source provides answers to frequently asked questions about Alzheimer’s Disease. I selected this source because it went along with the previous fact sheet source listed above, I selected it because it crosschecked information and allowed me to become more of an expert in the topic of Alzheimer’s disease and be able to teach other about it during my capstone. I found this source useful because it contained more information that went along with the other information listed above and allowed me to become more of an expert. One limitation I found was the source wasn’t that detailed and I found it to be extremely short.

Latest Medication for Memory Loss | Alzheimer's Association. (n.d.). Retrieved January 29, 2015, from http://www.alz.org/alzheimers_disease_standard_prescriptions.asp

This source provides an insight into the latest medications to treat memory loss caused by Alzheimer’s Disease. I selected this source because I wanted to know what was being done currently to treat the one main symptom of Alzheimer’s Disease which was memory loss. I wanted to be able to know a little bit more about what the money being raised goes towards and

what walking for the cure actually does. I found this source useful because it allowed me to really see what I am walking for each year and what all current donations go to and how people with Alzheimer’s are being treated to fight this nasty disease.

(n.d.). Retrieved January 03, 2015, from http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/159442.php

This source provides the medical details behind just exactly what Alzheimer’s Disease is and what it causes later on in life and what it causes. I selected this source mainly for background research purposes. I needed to be able to have options and I felt the only way that that would happen would be to find as many options and sources as possible. I found this source useful because this allowed me to be an expert and I like that. One limitation that I found was that I have multiple background information sources and they can be a bit drawn out.

Mace, N., & Rabins, P. (1999). The 36-hour day: A family guide to caring for persons with Alzheimer disease, related dementing illnesses, and memory loss in later life (3rd ed.). Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press.

This source is the perfect guide for families caring for someone with Alzheimer’s Disease. It is a how to book that gives you detail by detail about what is going to happen to your loved one during their time with Alzheimer’s, memory loss, illnesses that come dementia and ways to cope and help your loved ones through this tough time and help give you tips as the caretaker in how to help them and how to remain sane throughout it all.

Shua-Haim, J., & Ross, J. (n.d.). Alzheimer's Syndrome and not Alzheimer's disease: The historical struggle to define the disease. American Journal of Alzheimer's Disease and Other Dementias, 92-95.

This source is a journal debate that begins to talk about why Alzheimer’s Disease should be labeled a Syndrome and not a Disease and the great struggle in trying to name and define the disease. I have found this source incredibly resourceful because this has become an eye opener for me because I feel as though it should be a syndrome because I feel like disease generally turns people in a negative connotation towards it and I feel like that always isn't a good thing. One limitation of this source that I found was that I think a lot of these arguments are invalid.

Take Action | Alzheimer's Association. (n.d.). Retrieved January 13, 2015, from http://alz.org/ advocacy/take-action.asp

This source is how to take action against Alzheimer’s Disease and how to become an advocate. I selected this source because I have recently become an advocate for the Alzheimer’s Association. It is a very simple process and therefore many people should just fill out the simple form and become an advocate. I found this source useful because I feel like it was simple and that this is a good thing to place in my capstone presentation for those who may not have known about it already.

Wandering and Dementia | Caregiver Center | Alzheimer's Association. (n.d.). Retrieved January 29, 2015, from http://www.alz.org/care/alzheimers-dementia-wandering.asp

This source is about one of the main things that comes along with Alzheimer’s Disease, which is wandering. I selected this source because I wanted to show the negative things that happen due to Alzheimer’s. I wanted other people to know what happens when there are not a great deal of care available and when medicines aren't readily available either. Wandering leads to many disappearances and many loved ones are put at risk. With the lack of memory and wandering. It is not a good combination and therefore that is why I chose this link because this needs to be prevented.

What Is Dementia? (n.d.). Retrieved January 23, 2015, from http://www.alz.org/what-is- dementia.asp

This source is teaching about what dementia is and the ability to be able to identify what dementia is and how to cope with it. Many people are unaware of the causes and treatments of dementia and they need to be able to understand it to the fullest. The reason I selected this source is for the ability to raise awareness during my project than any other reasoning. It is hard for me to do a project like this, considering my loss however I need this to become an issue that is readily available for p-people to understand. The only limitation I have with this source is the fact that there isn't any thing that would lead to the possible prevention, however I feel like this could lead to many things.

Williams, J. (n.d.). Role of The Immune System and Inflammatory Response In The Aetiology of Alzheimer's Disease. Alzheimer's & Dementia, S285-S285.

This source is about the way that your immune system reacts when Alzheimer’s Disease is present. I selected this source again for the ability to be more aware about what goes on inside your body during the time when Alzheimer’s Disease is present and I feel like that is incredibly important and is something that everyone should be aware of because I feel like this is an incredible change in your body whether it is for the good or for the bad and I selected this source because it talks about the role of Alzheimer’s in your body and is just another piece of the puzzle to be completed with further research.

Jules James Capstone

Posted by Jules James in Capstone - Echols - Wed on Thursday, May 14, 2015 at 8:44 am

My name is Jules James and my project will be teaching women some of the ways they could take care of their hair, to know what care of hair to buy and to receive a maximum hair growth. A basic overview of my project is I’m creating a YouTube channel based on hair. This channel will include weave reviews, how I take care of my hair with different techniques, and all the products I use. The way my hair channel is different from the others is the age difference. Mostly everyone else who have a hair channel is in their adult life working or in college. But not me. I’m a high school senior trying to get into college and work every weekend. By having all of this in my life, I will show that girls my age are capable of doing their hair with a professional look just as well as women with time on their hand.

And now that I'm at the end of my project, I learned so much. For instance. I inspire girls like me who are always so busy to take the time to care for their hair more. I got to build these girls’ confidence up so they know that they are capable of taking care of themselves without having to dish out thousands of dollars to someone to do something that they can do for free. Also, I learned that get people interested you have to be very enthusiastic and not dull at all. You have to promote yourself to get people to watch. And some of the comments I received on my videos gave me some good ideas and more of them were confident boosters. When you watch my channel I hope you see all the hard work and fun put into my project. And note that even though this project is due and done I'll be continuing it during the rest of the school year and after high school.

Click here to view my channel and the rest of my videos.

Bibliography:

Wedmore, James. "6 Ways to Grow YouTube Subscribers and Your Exposure." Social Media Examiner RSS. N.p., 15 May 2012. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. .

This source provides information about how to increase my YouTube subscribers for beginners.

I selected this source because on this site it shows the amount of subscribers the person who created this article have that’s an amount of subscribers I could use. I found this source useful because my subscriber count is low and I need to find a way to increase it even though I only have one video uploaded. One limitation of this source was the information on how long did it take him to get the amount of followers he has. But other than that I feel like this site is very reliable and informative.

"How to Grow Long Hair If You Are a Black Female." WikiHow. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. .

This source provides information about how to grow healthy long hair for an African-American female. I selected this source because it give a lot of information about the correct way to take care of your hair that specifically benefits black women. I found this source useful because I actually do some of these things and I’ve seen progress in my hair I could be living proof that some of these things work. One limitation of this source was someone to actually say this actually work. People like me like to have someone comment or say that doing these things got my hair to waist length in 4 years.

Liong, Mireille. "Natural Hairstyles, Hair Care, Events, Stories, News and Black Hair Products." Natural Hairstyles, Hair Care, Events, Stories, News and Black Hair Products. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. .

This source provides information about all the African-American women that made the decision to go all natural when it comes to hair. This source also provides the background on celebrities that also decided to go natural, which inspired some of these women to g natural too. I selected this source because it provides stories from real women about how and why they decided to go natural and it’s also been around for a while so that help shows it been very useful to the public, which is the reason new events still occur on this site. I found this source useful because it shows natural hairstyles that I could use it and it also have a section on the site where you could find hair salons for natural women. This source also gets how to’s for a natural healthy head of hair. One limitation of this source was everything seemed to be cluttered together so it was hard to try to find all the information I need from this site.

"How to Take Care of Black Girls' Hair." WikiHow. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. .

This source provides information about how to take care of your hair but more in a product sense. I selected this source because it helps me out with talking about why the products I use helps my hair to grow other than just using protective hairstyles. I found this source useful because this explained the products more in a scientific sense other than just saying that use this and use that. There was no limitation to this site. It provided all the facts that I still was looking for about the science behind hair growth and it helped me look at how to grow hair in a different sense.

"4th Month Update on Hair Growth. Castor Oil, Coconut Oil, & Biotin."YouTube. YouTube, 4 Aug. 2013. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jb4Y5VFYsi0>.

This source provides information about how biotin, Pure castor oil, and coconut oil helps your hair to grow. And this is not a scripted video. You can tell that in this video the woman is in her bed doing a casual video about how tells products helped her and she showed her results from using them. I selected this source because in this video you can tell that she wasn’t faking her results and she also talked about her mistakes and what she could do differently next time. I found this source useful because you can tell that she wasn’t an actress trying to tell you the things you want to hear and this is an inspiration for one of my videos. One limitation of this source was she didn’t show a before and after pictures to show progress throughout the months.

"Relaxed Hair Care Regimen To Healthy Long Hair (Very Long & Detailed)."YouTube. YouTube, 4 Sept. 2012. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ku_3mx-kMHs&index=27&list=PL9orcA_5WrpC1I3IaiGwlSNCBrLfXBFKY>.

This source provides information about her journey on how she grew out her relaxed hair and received long and healthy new hair. I selected this source because one of my videos will be similar to hers, but the difference is I’m not relaxing my hair anymore. I’m trying to grow my hair without a perm or a relaxer. I found this source useful because other than the how to’s she gives more specific information about the products she uses and how it benefits her. Also in her description box she listed all the products that could help with hair growth. To me, this was a good example of an informative and interesting hair journey video.

"9 Everyday Protective Hairstyles(Relaxed/Texlaxed&Natural Hair)."YouTube. YouTube, 18 Jan. 2014. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sx6Hhdz6Izo&list=PL9orcA_5WrpC1I3IaiGwlSNCBrLfXBFKY&index=5>.

This source provides information about how to do 9 different protective hairstyles. I selected this source because just like me this is a girl in her teens showing the viewers how she do her protective hairstyles and how easy and fast it is to do these hairstyles. I found this source useful because with these hairstyles you do need weave so I can show my viewers how I can naturally rock my hair and still keep it protected. One limitation of this source was some of the hairstyles had too much of her hair out which took out the meaning of “protective”. For the hairstyles to be considered a protective hairstyle it must protect your ends from breaking off.

"How to Make a 3/4/u-part Wig(tutorial+ Tips)." YouTube. YouTube, 4 June 2011. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GH8MkBLoWao&index=24&list=PL9orcA_5WrpC1I3IaiGwlSNCBrLfXBFKY>.

This source provides information about how she created her U-part wig and the different techniques she used to make it. I selected this source because the visual was every clear to see everything she did and she showed that making a U-part wig could be easy if you take your time and have the right items. I found this source useful because she made some mistakes while making her wig and it helps me out to make sure I don’t make the same mistakes she did. One limitation of this source was she didn’t show how she installed it to her hair and how what as her results at the end.

"Natural Black Hair Care." Natural Black Hair Care. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://naturalblackhaircare.com/waystogrowhair.php>.

This source provides information about the factors of how to grow your hair longer and healthier. This site also provided information how to care for children’s hair and natural hair care. I selected this source because this site is more fact based other than things people hear. They focus on things like genetics, nutrition, age, and other things. I found this source useful because it teaches me things about my hair that I never knew. For example, I didn’t know that age could affect the way the hair grow. There was no limitation because very part of this site was informative.

Oliver, Dana. "Want To Maintain Natural Hair? Read These 8 Tips--Now." The Huffington Post. TheHuffingtonPost.com, 11 Oct. 2012. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/09/natural-hair-care_n_1499453.html>.

This source provides information about a real African-American woman who has gone natural. I selected this source because in this article she answers questions about her being natural and basically informing women on what to look forward to if they decide to become natural. I found this source useful because these questions are questions that were not answered from my other sources so this show that getting the information from someone who’s experienced in being natural is better than getting information from people who're just talking about it. There were no limitations because her article was straight forward and it didn’t leave me thinking about whether what she’s saying is a fact or not.

Melanie Harrington Capstone

Posted by Melanie Harrington in Capstone - Echols - Wed on Monday, May 11, 2015 at 12:36 pm

For my capstone I decided to make a fitness patch program that girl scouts of all ages could earn. There aren’t many patches dedicated to fitness and health that girls could explore.Fitness is something that I find very important and I wanted to give others the opportunity to learn about it. I created two sets of requirements for girls to follow depending on their ranking (Brownie, Junior, Cadette, etc.). I then put these requirements into action by conducting an event with the girls at one of our weekly meetings. Everyone who participated will be given a patch for their hard work. I learned a lot through this project, like how to plan events and how to work with children of all ages. I think the girls that I worked with really enjoyed themselves and learned valuable things about exercise and taking care of their body.

Below are the requirements for the Cadette, Senior, and Ambassador Girl Scouts that I created.

Fitness Is Fun Patch Program

Cadette, Senior and Ambassador Patch Requirements: Must complete at least 8 requirements (3 skill builders, 3 technology, 1 career exploration, 1 service project)

Skill Builders

  1. Learn how to do two new exercises for each of the following body parts: calves, thighs, abs, and arms. Incorporate these into a fitness routine of your choosing and add some cardio work as well. Cardio exercises may include jumping jacks, high knees, and zumba.

  2. What is self-esteem? Research the way exercise and fitness has an effect on a person’s self-esteem. Do people typically feel better after they exercise? Why or why not? Share your findings with a group.

  3. Being fit is more than physical. There are a lot of mental aspects that tie into fitness. Research 3 different mental disorders that benefit from eating healthy and exercising. How does this help?

  4. Using the right equipment is essential for any activity. They help prevent injury and provide different uses that vary from activity to activity. Choose and research three different sports (these may include running, dancing, gymnastics, etc.) and what equipment they require and why. What injuries do these pieces of equipment prevent?

  5. Yoga is another great way to exercise and stay fit. It promotes both mental and physical health and emotional balance. It can be used as a strengthening exercise and as a way to stretch and elongate your body. Research different kinds of yoga and incorporate them into your fitness routine.

  6. Being fit is more than simply exercising. In order to be truly fit you must find a balance between staying active and eating healthy. Differentiating between what is healthy or not can be really hard. This is what nutrition labels on food packages are for! If you are doing it right, you should be able to eat whatever you want, but in moderation. Find a new healthy snack that you think you will like and try it!

Technology

  1. Research different ways that technology is used in sports. Some things to consider are how sports channels broadcast and comment on live sports events, how scoreboards in basketball games are used, and how people use technology to stay up to date with sports.

  2. Research different ways in which technology is used in the running world. How do runners track their progress? How do races time thousands of people all at once? What are some tools that people use to track their diet and exercise?

  3. A person’s heart is one of the most important organs in their body. It is imperative that their heart stays strong and healthy especially when they are engaged in physical activity. What are some different heart conditions and how has technology changed the way we are able to detect them and monitor them?

  4. What are some different types of equipment that a person might see in a gym? What parts of the body do they work?

Service Project

  1. Run a workout clothes drive in your school or girl scout troop and donate them to your local thrift store.

  2. Research the way performance enhancing drugs affect the body. Make posters to hang in your school protesting their use.

  3. Reuse an old running shoe or sneaker as a flower pot to plant something of your choosing. Take care of your plant until it has grown significantly and then plant it in a local garden or park.

  1. Volunteer at a local race for runners/walkers. Pay attention to the type of planning and organization that goes into running an event that large.

Career Exploration

  1. Learn about and research 5 different careers involving fitness. How long do you have to go to school? What are some responsibilities that come with the job? Are these things that seem interesting to you? Share your new information with a group.

  2. Interview a personal trainer at a gym. Ask them how they keep their clients motivated, what techniques and tips they have for working out and staying fit, and how they got to become a personal trainer. Feel free to ask any questions you are interested or curious about.

  3. Read two stories about women who have impacted the world of fitness. What did they do? Why was it significant?

  4. Watch a documentary on a famous Olympian or sports player. What are some obstacles that they faced? How did their dedication affect their current position? What other things factored into being successful?

Below are pictures from my event on May 5, 2015.

One of the requirements for my patch program is to learn different yoga stretches and to incorporate them into a workout routine of your choosing. I chose this requirement as one of the activities I will be completing with the girls during my event. I’m not very familiar with yoga and this site was one of the first helpful ones I came across. I must admit however that I was skeptical about this sources reliability. Upon doing some research on the American Council on Exercise I found that they were a nonprofit organization that offers fitness certification, education, and training. This source provides different cool down yoga poses that would be great to stretch different parts of the body at the end of a workout.

WebMD is one of the few medical sites that I can truly rely on. I’ve used this site before in the past to conduct research for multiple classes. It is a very well known site that diligently provides sources for the information published by them. This article gave me great insight on the pros and cons of stretching before and after a workout. They has been a strong controversy recently regarding whether doing  static stretches before a workout is the best thing for you. This article has taught me something new about stretching that I can and will share with/teach the girls during my event.

Whenever I conduct research I am always wary about different websites that may come up in my google search. This blog was one of them. I don’t normally put a lot of trust into homemade blogs and websites because they’re just not very reliable sources. They’re often filled with more opinion than fact, never cite their sources, and it’s hard to connect the site back to a publisher/author. However, this source has proved to be useful by providing me with detailed descriptions and pictures of yoga poses that would be perfect to include in my event. The poses on here are unique from any other source I have used and all of the information on this blog was corroborated with other sources of information.

Over the years girl scouting has changed a lot of things. For example, their badge books. It’s hard to keep up with all of the new changes, especially if you are accustomed to the old ways. One of these revolutionary ideas that the Girl Scouts have come up with is to promote more empowerment to women as opposed to their physical and mental wellbeing. This patch is one of the very few new fitness patches I could find in any of the badge books, including the ones or the younger girls. This patch was created by the Girl Scouts of the USA and I completed this badge as a senior myself. I found some of the activities in here helpful for finding things to add to my event while still planning. This source challenges girls to get moving and create their own workout routines and sports events.

This was another badge in the newer badge books that proved to be helpful. Because I am

creating and running my own patch program, I needed to think about how I was going to design the event/requirements and how I was going to get badges. This section in the Ambassador badge book is walks you through step by step the process it takes to complete and earn a badge. This gave me an idea of how to set up my patch requirements for each age level and I was able to find a website that enabled me to order or design my own patches.

I have been a girl scout for 12 years. During this time I have made a lot of friends, all of whom have supported me in any endeavors that I have had prior to this capstone idea. We’ve planned to teach at patch programs before for younger girls but we have never been left in charge to plan the actual program itself. From my experience teaching at these patch programs, I know that I’m going to need to enlist the help of my fellow girl scouts to set up, clean up, gather the girls, run different activities, etc. I can’t handle 44 first graders on my own for two hours straight. These three girls have agreed to help me when the time comes to carry out my event.

One of the skill builders in my patch requirements is to learn about a healthy snack and

then try it. This is one of the experiences that I will be giving these girls during the event. Some of the girls in each troop are allergic to peanut butter so in order to ensure that everyone can get a healthy snack that provides protein, salt, and carbs, I researched different healthy snacks that don’t catin any peanut butter. This PDF is from a school district in Ohio and it lists the nut-free snacks that the school provides its children. This gave me the idea of giving the girls cheese sticks and pretzels.

I have used the Huffington Post when conducting research for english papers and other various assignments. I find that popular news papers like this one tend to be filled with reliable information. In this article, I learned about different full body stretches to do before a workout. This source not only provided me with ideas on how to stretch at the beginning of a workout, but it told me that dynamic stretching is a lot better for your body before a workout as opposed to static stretching. It also explains that dynamic stretching moves full groups of muscles at a time to get the moving.

She really knows her stuff when it comes to girl scout protocol and has a lot of experience with dealing with girls of all ages and planning events for them. I sat down with her in a meeting this past week and we discussed the next steps of my project. She provided me with useful tips and information on where to take my project from here.

Joycrest is the website I will be using to order my patches once my patch program is over. Every girl who participates will receive one patch that I have specially chose for my event. I know a lot of people who have used this website before and when I began asking where I can find a place to get patches, Joycrest kept popping up. This source gives me a wide array of categories to choose from when picking a patch. I can order in bulk and the price changes for each patch depending on how many I order at a time. This is a great resource to get the rewards that my hardworking girls will deserve. This website also allows me to personally customize any patch of my choosing.
