Glory Tribute: Capstone By Soledad Alfaro-Allah

Posted by Soledad Alfaro-Allah in Capstone - Kamal - Wed on Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at 9:55 am

Abstract:

I created a tribute to black Philadelphia, by making a piece of short film using many different aspects of the city including its people as well as its youth, the short film is the preface to a larger project which will end up being a documentary on Philadelphia and the abandoned buildings here, and how that relates to gentrification. However this is an artistic play on that because it involves a poem that describes the black joy and what that looks like in America and, the story of black resilience.

I spent the school year, putting together the video and small tribute to the poem and to the people of the city, by using the time I was given in dig vid and continued to refine it over the course of the year, leaving us with the particular product. However this is not the finished product with anything in life and art it still could be further edited and refined in order to make it much more powerful.

The representation with everything (Colors, Hues of video, faces of youth) have to do with the contradictory ideals of what black joy looks like and what the situation for black lives actually is in relation to America. 2015-2016 and 2014 as well have all been years chalked full of social injustices, that are noticed more lively and loudly because of social media. The Black live matter movement has been one of the largest trending topics revolving around social media, and artistic contribution in my opinion has been one of the most essential points of the movement, in making people care about black lives.

William Derry Capstone

Posted by William Derry in Capstone - Kamal - Wed on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at 11:58 pm

Abstract:

I created The Empire: All Things College Basketball In Philadelphia last year with my good friend Benjamin Simon after attending a journalism conference at Germantown Friends School (GFS) and being inspired by National Baseball correspondent Tyler Kepner. Kepner shared a magazine of his own creation from when he was younger, which led to our sports website idea.

I prepared for the upcoming season by writing recruiting profiles for incoming freshman who were recruited by the six schools that we decided to cover (Temple, Saint Joseph's Penn, La Salle, Villanova and Drexel). The recruiting profiles helped us lay down a foundation for the site.

Once we were informed of the media polices related to covering a college basketball team by two collegiate media relations directors, we began to conduct our first interviews with players and coaches.

We added more writers to our staff by sending out a tweet from our @PhillyEmpire Twitter handle. Shortly after, two writers agreed to join us. We gained traction by posting articles to Twitter and Facebook, which led to a staff of nine writers and a photographer.

From having access to the media room at the Palestra and Hagan Arena, to sitting courtside next to professional journalists at games, to listening in on Phil Martelli and Steve Donahue’s post-game press conferences, this has really be an exhilarating experience and one that I could not have even dreamed of. My website has come a long way in the past year and I want to continue the success.

Annotated Bibliography

Delaney, Tim. "Tim Delaney Villanova." Telephone interview. 11 June 2015.

This is a telephone interview recording between myself and Tim Delaney. Delaney is college basketball player who currently attends Villanova University and is in his freshman year there. This interview was conducted before the season started but while he was on campus preparing for the season. Many questions were asked during this interview that had to do with his high school basketball career, his decision to attend Villanova University and what he like’s to do off of the court, among other things. The content of the interview was used for an article written about Delaney in June of 2015, that featured a Q&A section that contained some of his responses. This telephone interview recording was credible.

Donahue, Steve. "Steve Donahue." Personal interview. 2 Jan. 2016.

This is a press conference recording of Steve Donahue from after Penn’s game against Binghamton. Donahue is Penn’s head men’s basketball coach and is in his first year with the team. Since it is a press conference recording, the recording included questions from many reporters who attended the game and responses from Donahue and a current Penn men’s basketball player who also attended the press conference. The content of the press conference recording was used in an article about Penn’s freshman players playing big roles on the team this season, that included quotes from head coach Steve Donahue about the freshman. This press conference recording was credible.

Gianni, John. "Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Teleconference." Telephone interview. 18 Jan. 2016.

Since it is a teleconference recording, the recording includes questions from many reporters who called into the conference, as well as Gianni’s responses to those questions. The content of the teleconference recording was used as background information in an article that previewed La Salle’s matchup against Big 5 rival Temple, that included Gianni’s opinion about how the season has gone so far which led to me forming my own opinion on their season. This telephone interview recording was credible.

"Home." City of Basketball Love. N.p., n.d. Web. 05 Feb. 2016.

City of Basketball Love is a website that covers men’s basketball throughout the tri-state area, more specifically they write about high school and college basketball. The editor-in-chief of the site Josh Verlin, who graduated from Temple University with a degree in broadcast journalism, has served as a resource for the site and has aided us with his knowledge of  journalism and media. His blog has served as an example of high quality sports journalism, as well as high school and college men’s basketball media coverage, which in turn has given us guidance and led to our site being what it is today. This site is credible.

Interview by Daniel Jeremiah. Audio blog post. Move the Sticks with Daniel Jeremiah & Bucky Brooks. N.p., 17 Apr. 2015. Web. 20 Dec. 2015.

Move the Sticks with Daniel Jeremiah & Bucky Brooks is a podcast series where two former NFL Scouts talk about football, more specifically they discuss current NFL and College events. Jeremiah is currently an analyst on the NFL Network and writes for NFL.com, while Brooks is a former NFL player and writes about the NFL for Sports Illustrated. Since Ben and I conduct our own podcast, Move the Sticks with Daniel Jeremiah & Bucky Brooks has served as a quality example of a sports themed podcast. Ben and I have incorporated this source in our own podcast by following their lead by starting the podcast with music for an intro. This podcast is credible.

Kepner, Tyler. "Imported Stars Give Red Sox a Chance at a Worst-to-First Repeat." The New York Times. The New York Times, 09 Apr. 2015. Web. 05 Feb. 2016.

The New York Times article “Imported Stars Give Red Sox a Chance at a Worst-to-First Repeat” was written around the same time Ben and I attended a journalism conference at GFS (Germantown Friends School) by Tyler Kepner. Kepner, who is a GFS alum and national baseball correspondent for The New York Times, spoke at that conference and I was inspired by his experiences as a teenager when he created his own sports magazine. He also had the opportunity to interview Philadelphia Phillies baseball players at that youthful age. I have used this source by following in Kepner’s footsteps by creating by own media during my teenage years. This article was credible.

Kimble, Lamarr. "Lamarr Kimble Saint Joseph's." Telephone interview. 22 July 2015.

This is a telephone interview recording between myself and Lamarr Kimble. Kimble is a college basketball player who currently attends Saint Joseph’s University and is in his freshman year there. This interview was conducted before the season started but while he was on campus preparing for the season. This is a press conference recording of Phil Martelli from after Saint Joseph’s game against Maryland-Eastern Shore. Martelli is Saint Joseph’s head men’s basketball coach and is in his 21st year with the team. Since it is a press conference recording, the recording included questions from many reporters who attended the game, which the Hawks won and responses from Martelli. The content of the press conference recording was used as background information to better understand the team’s mindset at the time, which turned out to be the same as it was in the beginning of the season “Win the day”. This press conference recording was credible.

"WFUV Sports Halftime Show." WFUV Sports Halftime Show. WFUV Sports. Philadelphia, PA, 16 Jan. 2016. Radio.

This is a halftime radio broadcast recording from Saint Joseph’s game against Fordham University. The halftime radio show was conducted by Fordham University’s radio station WFUV Sports at Hagan Arena, which is Saint Joseph University’s basketball arena. WFUV has been in existence for more than 65 years and is based out of Bronx, NY, where Fordham University is located. Ben was featured on the broadcast as a member of PhillyEmpire, which served as a promotion opportunity for the site. I used this source as a way to promote the site to a different and larger audience through social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter. This halftime radio broadcast recording was credible.

Nashay Day's Capstone

Posted by Nashay Day in Capstone - Kamal - Wed on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at 11:57 pm

Abstract: For my capstone, I decided to do a clothes drive. I am a person who is incredibly passionate about fashion, however, at the same time I am someone who really enjoys assisting people and making sure that those around me have the necessities they need to survive. My capstone consisted of me requesting that my peers give me clothes that they did not desire. I then sorted through to make sure everything was acceptable and in good condition. I then gathered them to wash them. The last and final step is to drop them off at the Salvation Army and to sell the clothes in pristine condition, the proceeds will be going to the SLA Debate Team.

Annotated Bibliography:

Brock, Catherine "How To Clean Thrift Store Clothing"

Part of completing this process was how to thoroughly clean the clothing that I received. This article goes into detail on what to use in order to remove certain scents and tells us how to maintain the clothing's quality.

Hancher, Julie, "Where to Donate Used Clothes in Philly: WCI Wed" 12 Feb. 2014

This article was incredibly informative as it gave me an idea of where to donate clothes in the Philadelphia area. It lists a few sights from each area in the city which made it very easy for me to navigate people in to local stops.

Big Green Purse "How I Collected 30 Warm Coats at my Cookies for Clothing Drive"

This was a fascinating read! It was a unique take on collecting clothes for the greater good. It's amazing to see what people will give when there is a bit of an incentive to give. I really enjoy how she lists what to do step by step which was helpful when trying to figure out the timeline.

Used Clothing Drive "How Do I Start?" http://www.usedclothingdrive.com/start/
This article was an amazing resource. First because it was stellar in terms of preliminary research. While the clothes drive seemed to be easy there were still many things that I did not know how to do. For example, I had no idea on how to organizing and this source laid this out incredibly.

"How to Organize a Clothes Collection Drive - Volunteer Weekly." Volunteer Weekly. N.p., 11 Jan. 2013. Web. 20 May 2016.

This was also a vital resource. Again, this is a source that was apart of preliminary research for my timeline. This source again gives a list of how to organize what a clothes drive. The previous source had things that I could imagine but this source was the opposite. It talked about NGO's which I had no idea could play part.

Kadija Koita Capstone

Posted by Kadija Koita in Capstone - Kamal - Wed on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at 9:44 pm

Abstract:

I know first hand what it was like to be in crucial need for blood, because when I was thirteen, I got malaria and was in Children`s Hospital of Philadelphia`s intensive care unit for two weeks on dialysis. My blood was also O negative, which is the universal blood type, but unfortunately only makes up 7% of the world's population, which made the process even more extensive for me.

Every two seconds someone is in need of blood. The average blood donation is three pints, which takes about 15 minutes for a volunteer to donate. A single car accident victim could need up to 100 pints of blood. I know some people had no idea of these facts, which is partly why I chose my capstone. I wanted to not only educate those who were not aware of this blood crisis, but also help, even if it only made a small difference, to alleviate the problem.

I decided to partner with the American Red Cross to host a blood drive. Building up to the drive, I publicized the event by teaming with Timothy Morgan, an American Red Cross blood drive manager to help spread the word, not only in our school, but in our community.

Below is the link to some of the blood drive photos. As well as descriptions.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1oa8glhnXVagAB4lg31bF1-ZMjZwGqk2cX22g3DcynKQ/edit?usp=sharing

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY:

  1. "Hosting a Blood Drive." American Red Cross. Web. 02 Feb. 2016.

This is about how you can sign up to be host for a blood drive. I didn`t know if you were supposed to go to the American Red Cross or if they came to your school. I now know how you can host a blood drive and be in partnership with American Red Cross. Prior to starting this capstone, I didn't know what steps I should have taken to start actually being a host for the blood drive, now I can move forward knowing. Before starting my capstone, I need to know the fundamentals of actually what my job is, this is why I looked up how to navigate a blood drive.

2. "American Red Cross Founded." History.com. A&E Television Networks. Web. 02 Feb. 2016.

This website is basically about how the American Red Cross was founded. Before doing this project I didn't know when the American Red Cross came about, so that is why I looked it up. This will help me access how long ago it Red Cross went back. Also who were all the people that were involved from the beginning. This is intended to signify the importance of how the American red cross was made. I also think that intended audience is for mainly seniors or adult students. The website is clean and gives lots of information.

3. "Donate Blood." Donating Blood. 01 Jan. 1948. Web. 05 Feb. 2016.

This website gives insight on what actually the blood facts are. They give you an understanding on how many people are eligible to give blood and how many people actually give blood. Prior to doing this research, I did not know the statistics and quick facts of giving blood. Also this would help me because I need to know the estimate of how many people will be attending in contrast with the statistics on how many people actually give blood. There are not any found authors, which is not good, but the website looks legitimate and the facts look exact as well.

4. "Carter BloodCare." Carter BloodCare. Web. 05 Feb. 2016. <http://www.carterbloodcare.info/>. This website illustrates the importance of O negative blood. It helps people insure that people with this type of blood can know why they really should donate. There are no authors which I think can be detrimental to the authenticity of the website, but people should still be able to trust it. Moving along my capstone, I want to be able to have an understanding of what a “universal donor” is so it will make people be more aggressive to donate. I need to make sure that I know every type of blood type, so that I know the kinds of people are more common to have each type of blood.

5. "Donor Preparation - LifeSource." LifeSource. Web. 05 Feb. 2016.

This is an overview of what to drink and what to eat before donating blood. This site had lists about what you actually eat and what you shouldn`t. It had reasons on why it was important to not eat certain types of food. This website looks like it was made easier and simpler for people to follow and come up with. It also does not have a certain type of publisher, which is ok because they have explanations of why the put each thing in there. With other websites, they really don`t have explanations that go in depth like how this website deos.

6. "What Happens When You Give Blood." What Happens When You Give Blood. Web. 05 Feb. 2016.

This source includes every procedure of giving blood. It goes into depth about what the interviewer will ask you and what they do prior to taking blood. This website is mostly geared to people that are first time blood donors and want to take precaution as to what is actually going to happen. Other websites just glimpsed over it and made it sound like you actually knew most  of the information prior to getting on the website.

7. After your donation. (n.d.). Retrieved February 05, 2016,

This gives you steps that you do to make sure you don't die when you give blood. It gives you ideas and facts about what to do when you have given your portion of blood. Some of them change when you have O Negative, because then you are able to give a double platelet blood which means you will have certain type of blood cells taken out and then it gives taken out. This will help me inform people that don`t know what type of blood they have and what their blood type means. This website was really helpful in making sure I know appropriate protocols for donors.

8. How Often Can You Donate Blood? (n.d.). Retrieved February 08, 2016, from https://www.mskcc.org/about/get-involved/donating-blood/how-often-can-you-donate-blood

When many people try and donate blood, they often don`t know the number of times you can give blood in a specific time. Often many people think if they feel ok then they can just give blood. When looking at this site, the intended audience was for people that were older in age because it had more medical terms and words that were harder in reading level. This website looked very sleek and had a medical feel to it, like many college students go on this site. Many other sites dealt with other things and not really specifically what I had searched. So now I have knowledge on this and it will help me further my project progression.

9. Dowshen, S. (2015). What's Blood? Retrieved February 08, 2016, from http://kidshealth.org/kid/talk/qa/blood.html

This website grasped the attention of many people of a lower age. The website was very child-like and had a lot of pictures to illustrate what was being said. It also has a foundation as its contributors which I think will grasp the attention of many parents because it has a positive connotation. Also because the foundation may be a non-profit which means they are teaching this because of the goodness of their hearts. I did not find the people who produced or made this website which I could say is one of its flaws, but I think that this website was better than a lot of the websites that I looked up.

10. Frequently Asked Questions. (n.d.). Retrieved February 08, 2016, from http://www.donateblood.org/donate-blood/faq

This website is great! All the research that I had previously researched was all on this doc. It looked very good and sleek. It gave background on what is in your blood, how are you going to be treated if you feel sick after giving blood and things like that. This website was very helpful and made me have more knowledge about the things that I previously researched. Also the contributors were not applicable which can cause damage to the recognition, but not that much.

Ilker Erkut's Capstone

Posted by Ilker Erkut in Capstone - Kamal - Wed on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at 9:33 pm

Abstract -

When I was younger I played a lot of soccer.  It all started in fifth grade when I first started at Independence Charter School.  I played at recess everyday for four years.  I grew to have a passion for soccer.  The biggest thing I was missing while playing soccer was a personal coach.  When I went to team practices I never felt that I was learning enough to play in high school.  I honestly think that if I had a personal coach, I would have been a lot more ready for competitive varsity soccer.   I went back to Independence Charter School so that I could give kids the opportunity I wish I had.  I taught a small group of third graders very useful skills that they can continue to practice to become better than I was at their age.  I enjoyed giving back to the community/my old school.  My program got kids active and got kids enjoying soccer so much, they practice when they are at home.
Below, I have my annotated bibliography and below that I have a presentation of my experience teaching.  This presentation explains my process getting ready for the program, what I taught each week and how each individual kid improved over the course of six weeks.  I also touched upon the five core values, as required.  I ended it with a few of my favorite pictures, a video and some acknowledgements.  I enjoyed this project and hope that others do as well.

Annotated Bibliography -

"Independence Charter School." Independence Charter School. N.p., n.d. Web. 04 Feb. 2016. <http://www.independencecharter.org/>.

This is my old school’s link. I looked at this website to get a feel for their environment and the after school activities that they have.  I will be working there for 8 weeks and therefore I needed some background info.  I learned a lot from this site and I  liked all the things that have changed from my old school.  I cannot wait to work at my school Independence Charter School.

Brown, Chris. "Coaching Kids Soccer, How to Make Soccer Practice and Game Day Dynamic and Fun." Www.coaching-kids-soccer.com. Chris Brown, n.d. Web. 04 Feb. 2016.

This website is my first link to help me start my class.  I got a lot of info from this such as game plans and what I am going to teach.  I also needed a way to positively influence the children and help them enjoy the club.  This website is quite reliable and gave me more info than most. The website was created by a father who coaches his son's team.

This sight was for the specifics for my curriculum.  I need to have a lot of different drills for my students.  If I do not have a lot of drills to show the kids my after school activity will not work.  I plan to have a total of 10 to 20 drills that I rotate around so that they learn things and continue to learn things throughout the weeks.

Eaton, Bill. "Coaching Soccer 101 - Soccer Coaching and Youth Soccer Drills." Soccer Rules. Bill Eaton, n.d. Web. 04 Feb. 2016. <http://www.coachingsoccer101.com/rules.htm>.

I looked up the rules of soccer so that if the kids have questions I can give them specific rules and not mislead them in any way.  THis will also help them in the future against refs and coaches.  This was not as important but I also know that my knowledge on soccer is as far as I have experienced it in a game.  This is why I chose this link.

This was another soccer rules site so that I could have some more insight.

I have a lot more links on how to coach, ranging from fathers to youth team coaches and even some professional coaches.  THe point of this is to get a lot of opinions on coaching.  When I was young I wish I had someone who could teach me soccer the right way from the beginning so that I would not be behind when I played with others.  This is why I have this link.

"Seven Tips for Practicing Positive Discipline." PBS. PBS, n.d. Web. 04 Feb. 2016. <http://www.pbs.org/parents/talkingwithkids/positive_discipline_tips.html>.

This source is very reliable.  It is both PBS and a .org source.  THis source was for guidance in making kids feel good about what they are doing.  This is very important because if kids do not feel comfortable then they will grow up afraid to express themselves in soccer.  That is a very hard way to play soccer because there will always be times when it is necessary.

This source was more general.  I wanted to know how parents wanted their children to be taught.  Not specifically about anything.  I found that it is very similar to the source above in that they want there to be a lot of positive energy and that the kids should be able to express themselves.  This is why I chose this link.

THis link was to understand how parents want their children reprimanded or punished.  It was very interesting as I find that parents like the teachers to be very upfront with how they feel  No physical altercations should be necessary.  If it gets physical with 2 students then being physical is okay.  This is why I chose this link.

"Best Age to Start Playing Soccer." Youthletic. Youthletic Staff, n.d. Web. 04 Feb. 2016. <https://www.youthletic.com/cincinnati-oh/articles/best-age-to-start-playing-soccer/>.

THis was the most interesting link because it is said that kids should start learning soccer around the age of 4.  That is really young.  The kids will not really learn anything till they are at least 6.  My audience will be 3rd and 4th graders.  But I believe with good coaching I could get them to the place they should be if they started when they were 4.  I hope my idea works.  This is why I chose this website.

Felix d'Hermillon Capstone

My name is Felix d’Hermillon, and for the last eight months I have been working on a project to give back to the community somehow. For a while I wanted to record an album that I would be able to post on icloud but It didn’t really feel right. After watching Back to the Future, a specific scene from the movie caught my eye. The scene where Marty McFly plays the gig at prom, and I realized how relatable that scene was to the scenario that I am in, considering I would be having prom soon. My final project that I decided to go with was a musical performance at prom. The requirements of the capstone project were to give back to the community in some way, and I think that music is one of the best ways that you can relate with somebody and everybody enjoys some type of music especially if they’re at a prom! I managed to scrape a band together and here we are! I have learned what it’s like to get a show together.

Mia Weathers-Fowler Capstone

Posted by Mia Weathers-Fowler in Capstone - Kamal - Wed on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at 7:24 pm

Since the end of junior year I have been really intrigued by the way that high school and teenagers are portrayed in media, especially in movies with teens as the target audience. Last year when I saw DUFF, a teen movie about the Designated Ugly Fat Friend, I decided to make my capstone about the realities of high school, specifically for senior year. In the beginning I set out to make a documentary style film. That idea has since changed to a scripted short film, but the core ideas are still the same. I wanted to explore the key themes of senior year that never get talked about in the movies; stress, relationships, friendships, and saying goodbye. Senior year is hard. In real life friendships sometimes fall apart, relationships have to come to an end as we all part for college, and the immense stress to get into college and start living your own life is almost crippling. I have attached a collection of the videos and interviews I originally collected for the documentary as they will still appear in the final product. I also attached the screenplay of the short film (I'm still putting the final editing touches on it). This year I had the pleasure of working with Philly filmmakers and actors to try to make my vision come true. Hopefully my film can paint a brief picture of some of the real hurdles and joys students will face during senior year!

Virtual Reality is a idea that is currently being explored deeper to bring immersion to video games and simulations. However how can this be applied to a learning environment?  For my Capstone I worked on a virtual simulation of our solar system that can be viewed with the Oculus Rift. This is part of Project Stargazer, my ILP for the past two years where the group has worked with making an representation of the solar system with VR for The Franklin Institute.

I started out working on the design of the simulation in the Unreal Engine creating the cockpit and menu displays of the spaceship that would serve as our HUD. However as the only one in the group with knowledge of Unreal, I ended up also working on the code. During the year I finished the design of the spaceship, tried to get the ship to move, made a planet map for each in the solar system complete with HUD’s showing information on the planet and made starry background. However I was never able to finish the coding and could not get the ship to move even after a month of troubleshooting and consulting with Unreal coders. However I taught several of the sophomores in the project how to use Unreal and will continue to help out throughout the summer.

During this project I learned about the benefits of VR for education with it’s added immersion allowing for greater focus and more effective visuals.

An article looking at Stanford’s Virtual Reality lab and applications of the technology. The level of immersion that the lab provides is shown as an example of how to provide the students with realistic environments to better educate them about the subjects. However the biggest drawback is shown to be the development of such simulations which often take a year for each. The immersion of VR is being compared to watching a normal video of the same information to compare the difference and find just how effective it would be.

Jacklyn Middleswarth's Capstone

Posted by Jacklyn Middleswarth in Capstone - Kamal - Wed on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at 3:06 pm

Abstract: My final project is a mural at the end of the second floor hallway. I chose this wall because it was a big enough wall and had a lot of potential. A lot of labor went into making sure the wall was ready for paint. I cleaned the wall, used joint compound to fill up the holes in the wall, and then sanded to make sure the wall was even. I then proceeded to measure out the dimensions of the LOVE portion of the mural so I could tape where I was supposed to paint. I then used a projector to help me trace the outlines of the white silhouettes. I then went over everything in color to finalize the mural. The idea of the mural was to create a sports themed mural because over the past four years, sports at SLA have taken up the most amount of my time. And my original idea was to have the LOVE Philly sculpture in the center with SLA sports surrounding the sculpture. I was going to have a night sky as the background but due to time constraints, I didn't get to it.

Abazoski, Miranda. Personal Interview. 04 February 2016.

In the interview with Miranda, being apart of a sport, especially in a sport like ultimate frisbee, the connections she makes is one of the most important things to have. When there are no connections on or off the field, it may feel like there is no point in playing. One word that specifically comes to mind when she thinks about SLA sports is: States. I will use the State’s idea in particular to portray the frisbee aspect about SLA. Some people define SLA by ultimate frisbee, everybody in the school knows it is an important sport to Mr. Lehmann, and almost every watches the ultimate kids workout in the morning. So to envelop what SLA sports are about, to include drawings around ultimate, and states is important.

Bell, Tamira. Personal Interview. 04 February 2016.

In the personal interview with Tamira, she brought up a new idea which was working hard towards something that she loved. It was touched on earlier by other students, although for the sport that Tamira does, which is student’s run, she said it was all about endurance. This is endurance is difficult and challenging to build, but by doing this, the endurance allows her to have it in other parts in her life. I will include hard work and practice as inspiration in my sketches. This idea helps to conclude what the life of SLA is, and how SLA sports helps you prepare for multiple aspects in life.

Denny, Shaion. Personal Interview. 03 February 2016.

Shaion talked about connection, and with connection especially in high school there’s more opportunity to talk to those who aren’t in the same grade. Making friendships on the team is what makes [basketball] fun for him. Shaion also talked about success, and overcoming a hardship, like beating a higher ranked team is a satisfying feeling, and one of the best feelings in a sport. The part where Shaion talks about SLA sports are just about having fun will be incorporated into the mural. The mural is going to be filled with positivity, and having fun in a sport is definitely a key for the mural’s portrayal of SLA sports in general.

Dymek, Malwina. Personal Interview. 02 February 2016.

In the interview, Malwina Dymek talks about to importance of being a team, and everyone helping each other to improve their skills and reach their highest potential. She continues to connect SLA’s core value collaboration to school. On a team, teammates constantly work together to win, and that mentality helps achieve collaboration in school projects. Malwina also states that the best thing about a sport isn’t the physical activity of it, it’s the cheering that goes on. This interview will be used as inspiration for sketches that will go into making the mural. Especially the main concepts of this interview which is collaboration, and the words she chose of when she thinks of SLA sports: family, support, positivity.

Fecher-Davis, Naomi. Personal Interview. 04 February 2016.

In the interview with Naomi Fecher-Davis says the first word she thinks of when thinking about SLA sports is camaraderie. Just like many others, friendship and trust is important to her when she is on a team. Naomi touched on the fact that SLA doesn’t hype up competition like other high schools, what SLA really tries to focus on is the bonding that goes on during games, and even off the field. One note she said that will definitely be used is when she says these bonds can last forever. This particular idea will be used as a main idea for a sketch, because a common trend through these interviews is bonding, and making those connections, while all has to do with collaboration.

Gerveni, Jorin. Personal Interview. 04 February 2016.

In the interview with Jorin, he talked about brotherhood. This relates to family, and he mentioned a cheer: “1, 2, 3, rockets, 4, 5, 6, family,” which is a common cheer among a lot of sports, especially the 1, 2, 3, rockets. Jorin also mentioned that pushing himself to do harder, and when his teammates cheer him on and pick him back on when he’s down allows him to have confidence. My idea is to use words spewing out from the main painting that describes SLA sports. I will use the cheer as a part of those words spewing out. Cheering is definitely an important part of being the the SLA sports community.

Hares, Rafi. Personal Interview. 03 February 2016.

In the interview with Rafi Hares, he talked about his realization of the different aspects of what goes into a team. He stated that he liked being apart of something bigger where his actions affected the whole team. He also in a way idolized the fact that there was a physical and innate talent to play a sport, but also a certain type of intelligence. He continued to talk about how SLA sports helped him gain connections. The answers that Rafi provided will be used, especially his answer about being apart of something bigger. So far the idea is to use the word intelligence when he would describe SLA sports as a possible word coming out of the mural.

Hershey, Dillon. Personal Interview. 04 February 2016

In the interview with Dillon Hershey, she talked about the team a lot. How the importance of being on a team helps her focus in school. Her way of learning is through physical activity by using her hands and/or body. So when she gets to take part in a sport, this gets her energy out and she’s able to focus in school. Dillon said that when you’re apart of a team the best thing is the support system they provide. I will use Dillon’s words, especially the part about the support system as an idea for a sketch. This is particularly to include in the mural, because many people are talking about how sports provide friendships and support. When there’s a mistake, they are there to lift you back up, not drag you down.

McArdle, Thayeena. "Mural Techniques for Painting Wall Murals: Preparing, Painting and Sealing." Art Is Fun. N.p., n.d. Web. 03 Feb. 2016. <http://www.art-is-fun.com/mural-techniques/#prepare>

This site contains a lot of information about a lot of different types of art. With murals specifically it talks about techniques for painting including prep work, starting and finishing, and how to paint the wall. Some steps included cleaning the wall and then priming it, using an art projector or grid projector, and then different ideas on how to apply to paint. The information on this website are credible, but I do not know if all the information on the website(if I were to apply it) would provide accurate step by steps. Although I am going to use the information on this website to guide how I am going to paint the mural, as well as what specific materials I need to get.

Williams, Bernard. "Techniques of Community Murals." Community Public Art Guide. N.p., n.d. Web. 03 Feb. 2016. <http://www.cpag.net/guide/2/2_pages/2_1.htm>

This site contains a guide about how to prepare for a mural. It talks about the condition of the wall, and that it does not need to be a perfect wall but that some imperfections can be painted over with. Another topic the guide touched on indoor walls and how certain preparations can have certain advantages. It mentions asking for permission, and measuring the wall to scale a sketch. This information the site provides I will use because I have already asked permission, as well as having a plan to measure the wall. The site is pretty reliable, and is apart of the Chicago Public Art Group.

Leo Levy Capstone

Posted by Leo Levy in Capstone - Kamal - Wed on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at 1:57 pm

Abstract:
One of the most influential books I’ve encountered is Herman Hesse’s 1922 classic Siddhartha. Siddhartha was first published in the U.S. in the 1950s, and became one of the defining texts of the countercultural movements of the 1960s. I first read this transformative text in the fall of my Junior year. As I followed Siddhartha’s travels on his quest for understanding, a fire of curiosity in me was sparked. The book initiated a period of introspection and contemplation that has not sputtered out yet.

Siddhartha is full of messages that would resonate with my generation, if they would just pick up the book and read it. It has also never been illustrated. Illustrations can augment the content of texts, creating new depth through the dialogue between the visual and the literary. They also have the power to make otherwise obscure texts more accessible. I decided to create a set of illustrations that would bring Siddhartha into the cultural conversation of the 21st century.

I initially planned to create 12 panels in ink and watercolor. It became apparent that my lack of proficiency in watercolor would not suit this project’s level of complexity, and that creating 12 strong images would take much more time than I had. Instead, I created five panels drawn in ink, and colored digitally. I have also excerpted a series of salient quotes from the text to pair with my drawings. I plan to publish a pamphlet including this text and my illustrations before capstone presentations.
