(It asks the question...)

Provoca pensamiento con much personas. Es muy bueno.

Mar Adentro: Resea

Researhcing the Issue

Last year in the summer of 2009 Mayor Micheal Nutter of Philadelphia held a news conference where he stated he would have to close the city library system, recreation centers and the entire park system. In the summer that just there was fear of a plan to close all public pools at recreation centers in Philadelphia. With help from outside donations the pools were able to stay open. Mayor Nutter is the main opponents of providing adequate amounts of money our recreation centers. Unfortunately Mayor Nutter has a large amount of power and influence on this issue, There was a bill in 2007 that tried to work towards the budget increase for parks and recreation centers but nothing recent.

In my search to find city officials to support my cause I found that I may have an ally in Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown. She devotes her work and legislative efforts toward improving the life of children in Philadelphia and the potential of girls in leadership roles.  In 2007 Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown created a resolution to create a task force for Parks and Recreation facilities.  Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown makes a point to try improve the lives of the youths of Philadelphia, and with out recreation centers for children to find a safe haven that can't happen. Three other allies would be Majority Whip Darrell Clarke, Michael  DiBerardinis, and Recreation Director Sue Slawson.

Philadelphia Parks Alliance could be an asset to me their work for the preservation of parks and recreation centers in Philadelphia. The groups main focus is parks but parks and recreation centers have to share funding so the higher the budget increase I fight for the recreation centers the more money parks get so, it is a win-win for both of us.

My best chance would be to get the people of the community on my side because it will be easy to convince them that it will be beneficial to have the budget increase.

I would take the next year to make a change in the budget for 2012. The budget for 2011 has already been made. In that year I will make connections with Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown, Majority Whip Darrell Clarke, Michael  DiBerardinis, and Recreation Director Sue Slawson to try to put an effective plan together.

Screen shot 2010-11-29 at 10.22.10 PM        I would say that this is a good year ad the city sweepers are coming along. They are not in all places  of the city, but I have seen them more around my house. Its not often that they come through back to back like they do in Center City, but there is a difference in my area that I live in.

Screen shot 2010-11-29 at 10.41.00 PM

The essential stakeholders in this outcome are the hundreds of kids that live in Philadelphia that have to constantly walk over trash in the streets. This is for the elders who look at young children just disrespect the area by throwing trash on the ground, littering and it staying there forever. This out come effects pets and and their owners, having the confidence of going on a walk around the neighborhood and not having to limit their dog because  they don't know if they will eat some trash that was thrown about.

Screen shot 2010-11-29 at 10.38.31 PM

This is not just a problem of street sweepers not being prominent in urban areas, it basically just the trash that litters the street. Every one can help. If a group of kids volunteer just an hour of their time to cleaning up a park near them, or a busy street, they can make a difference.

I can influence any one that is with ear shot.   It would be great to get a group of students to go out and clean, starting close like the school. People seem to get really motivated when things are visual. Even though this is a lobbying assignment for better city cleaning support in urban areas of Philadelphia, we can also help by at least making out school a cleaner place.

Reducing the Price of SEPTA - Blog #3

Joe Sestak:
“I believe that it is essential for public transportation to be reliable and affordable for all Americans.”
Raymond LaHood:
Secretary of Transportation for the United States
The only problems with this idea lie with why the strikes came about in the first place. There is a need for income in SEPTA workers and part of the cut for the budget could come from their salary. We are reaching a point in SEPTA’s history where they vehicles need servicing. SEPTA has just put into affect the use of some of the new cars that they’re ordered. “The three cars are the first of 120 ordered by SEPTA, at a cost of $274 million...” and are a reflection of the need for replacement for the “73 railcars built in the 1960s”. This necessary use of spending hurts the budget of not only the transportation of Philadelphia, but Philadelphia’s budget deficit in general. It is a ripple affect that will hurt how we travel along with how we function in other areas of our daily lives.
Along with the fact that workers would possibly receive budget cuts, it is almost impossible to even touch their income because of their contract.
In one blog, it is pointed out that SEPTA targets who they want to target. In 2007, it was debated apon for what price to raise. They decided on raising the transfer rate instead of the rate of tokens. This would target people who unfortunately have to travel quite far for what they need such as”...poor school kids and moms taking their kids across town to church!” Therefore, SEPTA could be a problem when it comes to talking about their reliability and rates. They wouldn’t want to incriminate themselves or make it harder on the people they want to protect.
Unfortunately, there aren’t many people doing anything about this problem, possibly because of the budget crisis in Philadelphia. However, this doesn’t mean that it isn’t still an important issue. This only means that someone needs to commence the idea of having a more reliable and affordable SEPTA.

Reducing the Price of SEPTA - Blog #1

By: Teila Allmond

As a teenager who is frequently using public transportation to complete her daily activities, I ride SEPTA quite often. Besides my everyday route to school, I also am always traveling to friend’s houses or sports games. Therefore, I have experienced almost every SEPTA route or kind since I was 14 years old. There are quite a few things that have changed about SEPTA including it’s unreliability and price. These two points of SEPTA are crucial to the success and endearment that the city of Philadelphia want to allot this transportation association. Back in November of 2009, Septa protested because of their disagreement with their current budget. Their contract was quite unfair and not until March of 2010 when they went on strike did they get a compromise for it.
Their compromise included:
  • $1,250 signing bonus with a five-year contract
  • 11.5 percent wage hike over five years
  • 2.5 percent raise in Year 2 and a 3 percent raise in each of the following three years; no increase in the first year
  • a gradual increase in employee contribution to their pension fund from 1.5 percent to 3 percent
  • no change in employee contributions to the medical plan
I’m definitely not the only one in Philadelphia experiencing some antipathy towards this association. In another blogNow with Septa’s spiking budget and Philadelphia’s debt along with it, SEPTA has sold the rights to the name of Pattison Station to AT&T for 5 million dollars. This is a definite reflection of the amount of debt that they are in because they are willing to sell and sacrifice the dignity of their station name to a company for a resolution of about 3% of their debt.

In a blog by a commuter of SEPTA, NYC and DC’s methods of refilling fares on a type of Metro Card was mentioned. I feel as though with ease and comfort, comes the trust that SEPTA needs so badly from its commuters.

             All About My Legislator

                          Anthony H. Williams

Screen shot 2010-11-29 at 10.06.48 PM

A little bit about my legislator :
  • Anthony Hardy Williams  joined the Pennsylvania Senate in 1998, his second stop in the state Legislature.
  • He first won office as a state representative for the 191st Legislative District.
  • The 8th Senatorial District represents the majority of the Commonwealth with its economic, ethnic, religious, and geographic diversity, stretching across Delaware and Philadelphia counties.
  • Williams parts are in small towns such as Ridley Park, suburban areas such as Yeadon, and urban communities in South, West, and Southwest Philadelphia.
  • As a legislator, Williams works to provide opportunities for residents of his district and beyond, with improving the protection of his people, educational access, and economic development underlying his initiatives.
For more information on him visit his website.

I have actually met the senator on multiple occasions because my grandmother works for him. I’m added to the staff for his neighborhood to neighborhood festival every year before school starts back up. It’s a really neat change to bond with the community and come out and see the great acts lined up.

Screen shot 2010-11-29 at 10.11.22 PMThis year’s headline artists’ were Macy Grey and Chrisette Michele, but there were open mic sessions where people from the community could get on stage and show their talent.  There were many performers, singers, rappers and dancers who entertained the crown all day.

Here are some more pictures from the festival:  Screen shot 2010-11-29 at 10.13.08 PMMany people came out supported the festival.

I plan to ask the senator about my topic and what are his views on the subject. I’m sure that he would agree with me and is probably working on a solution.

Ever look around your neighborhood and see trash scattered every where? Ever talk a stroll down you block and see dirty streets and sidewalks slewed with garbage?

Well in Center City, you walk around and see a trash can, or recycle bin at the beginning, end and middle of each block. Besides the abundance of trash receptacles, you also see street sweepers riding past cleaning the street.

52nd Market is a prime example, go to West Philly any day and you will see trash in the gutters and the whole situation is not visitor friendly. My question is. .  . . .If you have it it in Center City, where visitors come to view our history, why can’t we have it all over? Why is it that when I step a foot out off Downtown, the trash seems to increase?

I am lobbying for the trash clean up in Center City to be as rigorous in the more urban parts of Philadelphia.

My motivation to lobby this topic, is just what i see everyday, to and from school where ever I go.  There are places in Center City that are spic and span like South st. but many places in south Philly have  piles of litter just waiting to be picked up by sanitation. There is the City sponsored group called S.W.E.E.P that educates citizens about there responsibilities and duties that will help keep Philadelphia clean. I’m sure regular pedestrians would support my lobbying idea, for the simple fact that it’s there you too. There aren’t and laws for my lobbying subject, but I propose we do something about the trash, and make the clean up more rigorous.

Mar Adentro

What is the status of your issue at the legislature? Is this a "good" year?

This issue is not currently being pursued by any legislation

Who is essential to the outcome?

The most essential person to this case will be whomever replaces Robert C Donatucci and their views on this issue.

Who else is working on this? Can you coordinate?

There are over 100 college professors seeking to lower the drinking age. We will try to coordinate with some of the college professors. We will also try to get in touch with the National Youth Rights Association, because they are also trying to lobby for this.

Who can you influence?
The local population of teenagers.

What is the time frame?
Anytime between now and the next legislation meeting.

When are key dates - meetings, committee hearings, deadlines, etc.

The liquor control board has no current scheduled meetings because of the death of Robert seeing as he was the head chairmen. As soon as they find a replacement, meetings will continue. That will be the best time to try and bring up our own points.

Researching the Issue - Lobbying for Smaller Schools: Educating all of Philadelphia

Research the Issue

1. What is the status of your issue at the legislature? Is this a "good" year?*4 elected officials, and one committee have indicated support for our issue, that has a strong background with media attention. These officials have lots of power and can influence the decisions of many people and take this lobbying assignment to the furthest extent that it can go. Our opponents would be the larger schools who have a good reputation for being a larger school, without the separation of academies, or having pupils from alternative schools attending their successful institution. So far there have been no policies 2. Who is essential to the outcome?*These are the allies that we need on board in order to allow our points to reach a higher power in the world. These are the people who can make that happen:* Robert A. Brady* Michael Nutter* Johnny Irizarry* Denise McGregor Armbrister* The Lifeworks Alternative School. We also need the School Reform Commission’s meetings to allow the public to understand our views as we will attend these meetings and express this issue to all who attend. The officials who conduct these meetings can allow the issues to reach the higher powers above.3. Who else is working on this? Can you coordinate?*Amirah Burkett and Sinnea Douglas, other seniors at SLA are also lobbying on adequate education. We don’t all have the same exact focus areas but we can use each other’s findings to make a stronger debate, on why education has become such a prevalent issue in this futuristic society we live in today. We have already planned a meeting with the two of them to make an action plan.* Small academies and schools with a good basis or primary focus are ones who play a key role in helping us lobby for smaller schools. When the focus comes to these alternative schools, after we have influenced the public, we will use the influence these small schools/academies have on the public eye, and reach out to the alternative schools. This process will enable the students being taught there to branch out to receive a better education from a more focused curriculum. These students will be given a second chance to not only turn their lives around, but make a future for themselves in the process.4. Who can you influence?* With the help of some very influential figures in the realm of education, we will be able to convey our message across a broad range of schools. Varying from the alternative, public, private, catholic, and parochial, a good education needs to be provided to all students. No matter what the reason, all students need to have access to the same tools and resources to receive an equal education. *We also believe that there needs to be a higher authority addressing these concerns as well. If this concern reaches a level to which it receives national attention, we believe it should be worthy enough to be put in-front of the President Barack Obama, and The Department of Education Head Arne Duncan.5. What is the time frame?*Although our class, American Government, will only run until the end of our second quarter (Mid January) there isn’t really a time limit to this project.  Yes, we will not be required to lobby, research and influence, but lobbying isn’t really effective unless you have desire to do it. Hopefully we will have enough success so that we can continue to lobby for it in the future, on our own time.  If not, we could always pass it down for another group of seniors to tackle in the 2011-2012 school year.
