Meet India’s Feminist “Queen”

Behind all of the beautiful colors, saris and dialogues lies a patriarchy, where men are given the meaty roles and the women are left with the bones. Kangana Ranaut is determined to change that. A girl from a middle class family, often looked down upon simply for biology she can’t change. From a young age, she noticed the difference between the girls and boys in her family. Her brother was supposed to be the breadwinner, savior and everything else. She and her sister were an accident, in attempt of a son. She knew that her parents didn’t have many hopes for their daughters, except to one day get married and have children. She envied that her parents wished only success for her brother and didn’t turn around to encourage her and her sister to do the same. In this anger and frustration, she left her home and went out to follow her dreams.
It took her some time to breakthrough and figure out who she really was. She started from scratch and had a lot to learn. Putting her broken English into pieces and discovering acting changed her life. At only 17, she landed the leading role in a crime drama. The movie (Gangster)]was a box office success and Kangana made her mark as a raw and honest performer in the industry. Throughout her career, her most notable performances include a schizophrenic actress, drug addicted model and villainous shapeshifting mutant. She has time and time again proved her versatility, standing as a strong symbol of a hard working woman in the Bollywood industry. However, her film “Queen” had the biggest impact on audiences. In this film, she essayed the role of a young woman who gets dumped the day before her marriage and decides to go on her honeymoon by herself. It showcases the growth of Kangana’s character Rani and how she discovers who she is. The movie put spotlight on independent women and the importance of being yourself. Through her roles, Kangana has sent her fans and critics alike strong messages of feminism.
Kangana has always been known to speak her mind, without the fear of being politically correct. She has repeatedly talked about the disparity between her paycheck versus her contemporary male actors. She says, “[Men get paid] triple [the amount actresses do]. No one can guarantee the success of a film. So why such discrimination?” This is completely true. After the success of Queen, Kangana’s film Tanu Weds Manu Returns earned over $36 million at the box office which made it the most financially successful Bollywood film with a female protagonist. With each film and interview, Kangana is breaking all boundaries that are set for women and is actively helping to change things in the Indian film industry for women.

Reflection
Ever since I can remember, South Asian cinema has surrounded me. As a Bengali American, I have been heavily influenced by this media. So much so that you can call me a bollywood (our version of Hollywood) junkie. The color, costume, music and dramatic nature of the films have always captivated me. However, as I grew up I realized the power that the men in the industry have over mainstream bollywood content. Usually the actors play the main role, with the juicy storyline and amazing characterization. They’re the ones creating, evolving and simply living. On the other hand, the actresses are left to play the flowerpot or “love interest” roles. Enter Kangana, a breath of fresh air.
What inspired me the most about Kangana that from her very first film, she has been changing what it means to be a woman in a place like bollywood. She has almost always chosen roles a conventional actress would typically shy away from because they’re not a ticket to box office success. But she never feared the consequences that her brave decisions may bring. Sure, a few of her films did not work financially, but she has always been praised for her command over her role and strong presence. Her body of work proves her versatility and her eye for strong female oriented films and characters have helped bollywood open their eyes to a rather untapped pool of talent.
Kangana’s strong sense of feminism and want for gender equality is also very inspiring. While women all over the world struggle with the term feminist, she proudly wears it on her sleeve and loves sharing her views with the media and audience. This kind of exposure is extremely important. Bollywood is a billion dollar industry, with many eyes watching their favorite stars. By speaking out publicly about issues of gender equality, her voice reaches so many people. All of this about Kangana and more have inspired me to base my project on her. I hope that Kangana continues this amazing work throughout her career and the rest of her life!

5 Minutes of Science : Dangers of Alcohol in College
This semester in Science and Society a major part of our class was dedicated to a "5 minutes of science" presentation, usually followed by a class discussion. The goal was for each student to work on this short project alone and present at the beginning of class, one per day. Each student was given a presentation day at the beginning of the semester and then we were on our own from there. The project was entirely open ended. All we had to do is pick any topic in science that interest us and describe the science behind the topic, how it relates to society, and why we chose the topic to begin with. Considering we are all young adults about to go off to college, I decided to do my topic on the dangers of drinking in college. The idea sparked when I heard about a group of young student scientists who were experimenting to prevent some of the dangers that happen to young women when socially drinking. The slideshow I presented ti the class is included below.

Courtney Smashes 3-Run Triple; Rocket Holds Bodine to 2 Hits, Win 15-1 in Rain

For the 3rd consecutive game, Rocket pitchers were downright stingy allowing opponents no more than 2 hits in a game. Lukas Supovitz- Aznar started it off by striking out the side on 10 pitches. He'd eventually strike out 7 in 3 innings of work and only allowed 1 run on 2 singles. Ben Simon, who gets his first start of the year on Wed vs Bracetti, came in for an inning to get loose and struck out the side. Tony Brown made his relief debut in the 5th and literally blew past Bodine hitters with 9 straight strikes, recording two strike outs and forcing a weak tapper back to the mound to end a very soggy afternoon.

Kevin Courtney led the team with 5RBIs, going 3-4 for the 3rd straight game, upping his league-leading total to 13RBIs on the young season with a bases-loaded triple in the 4th to knock Bodine's starter from the game. Lukas Supovitz-Aznar had 3RBIs and Tony Brown, Leon Finney and Aaron Watson-Sharer all had 2RBIs each. Avi Cantor and Alex Torres both laid down perfect bunts for singles and both came around to score in an 8-run third inning. Cleanup hitter- Ijustice Avery- drew three walks, as did Jason Greene and Kristian Ramos in their lone at bats, plus Freshman Kenny Carroll hit a run-scoring pinch hit double to ice the game.

Braille Literacy
Braille is a system of writing, reading, and overall communication for blind or visually impaired people. While I knew that I was wondering what else there was to know about Braille. There are currently three styles of Braille, although the basic structure of Braille is made in cells of six, whichever dots are raised corresponds to a letter, and in a single cell there are 36 unique combinations that can be made. Now Braille because it can't actually be physically spoken is technically not a language, and the overall availability of Braille 'speakers' and teachers is scarce. Most blind or visually inhibited people (up to 75% of them) can actually read print, so Braille is almost unnecessary. To write Braille you need a slate and a stylus, a machine that resembles a typewriter, and is really slow to use and produces a lot of noise. Because you need this special tool to create readable Braille text it is more difficult to make universally available for those in need.

Rockets Softball Takes Home First Win
After a heartbreaking, one-run loss in their debut, the Rockets mounted a late-game surge to solidly defeat Bodine in their second game of the season. SLA knocked in four runs in the first inning and launched to a 5-2 lead going into the third inning. Unfortunately, Bodine tied the game 7-7 heading into the fourth. Jumpstarted by SLA@B junior, Gianna Flego's triple in the 4th, SLA once again pulled ahead before a rough defensive stance in the 5th. The Rockets pulled together as a team and held Bodine to no runs in the last two innings and scored 10 to finish with a comfortable 22-14 win. Sophomore pitcher, Tia Roberts, pitched a full game, with 5 strikeouts. Five Rockets, including freshman, Ashley Delacruz, hit for extra bases. The Rockets take on Central on Tuesday.
Autism
The Autism Spectrum is a description for a wide variety of brain disorders that impair fine motor skills, socialization, and communication skills. As someone with Autism my life has been quite difficult and still continues to be difficult, however, for many people on the spectrum we are able to hyper focus on our interests and excel at them. There is no cure, but speech, occupational, and physical therapy are all things that can be used to help someone on the spectrum. We often live fixed schedules and follow a routine and change can be intrusive to us. In society we do not have heavy support or groups to back us. In recent years however, more and more programs have opened up but with limited support and or reach. However, here at SLA I have received a lot of support and this is something great for myself and fellow people on the spectrum. In reference to society, all that needs to be done is raise more awareness and support for my people and while accepting of us, do not treat us wholly different from our peers. We need to be involved in order to grow as people and this can only happen through the means of support of the common people.

My experience with my ILP is great. My goal is to visit more places around Philadelphia and my host is doing a great job helping me find these places. I also love the kids that also go to Mighty Writers and they are really helpful and friendly. And even though im only there once a week, every time i go back to the site, they are doing a new activity that i can join in on or if they are doing a workshop, i can help people with essays. Its only been amazing since i started and i cant wait to go back.

I enjoy my ILP as much as ever! I really like teaching the children and watching them grow. This semester I didn't do as much actual teaching, because they're much more experienced than they were at the beginning of the year.
Even with that though, I think I have a deeper knowledge of scratch because of how I explore the stuff they are learning at a more advanced level.

ILP
The ILP that I currently attend is called the ACE program, otherwise known as Architecture, Construction, and Engineering program. This program has widened my eyes into the world of construction, architecture and engineering, allowing me to learn about things I never thought possible. This ILP has also allowed me to meet people who work in these respected fields, therefore, helping me to further understand them. Overall, I enjoy taking part in this ILP and I look forward to broadening my view towards engineering, construction, and architecture in the upcoming future.
My ILP Experience: WPEB
I found out about my ILP the summer before 10th grade. My mom and I were looking for ways to make it about my interest in media. Our family listens to a lot of this american life, serial, radio journalism basically. That kind of reporting has always been interesting to me. So with the contacts my mother has in our west philly community, she introduced me to Renee McBride. Renee is the owner of WPEB 88.1, a mostly jazz radio station that wanted to expand out in youth radio. Now, through this, Radio Journalism was what I was able to do through this program. Now, I am able to say that I have definitely learned a lot from my time with WPEB. Through that time, I have learned the various laws that are important to consider and take into account when reporting and collecting interviews. For me, I feel like the progress I have made can be seen in the way I talk to others and in turn listen. In radio and in journalism in general, you are listening and n some ways telling, the stories of others. It's important not to overshadow others and their narratives, even when just listening. My process with Renee has taught me to appreciate that and take that into consideration, even with just my daily life.
ILP Semester 2
My ILP has taught me a lot about the adult world, and also the early education field. The teachers are kind and the students are also very pleasant. My internship has also given me an opportunity to be hands on in classrooms and to be able to see the kind of education the young children are receiving. I also learned the components that are required in the growth, development, and care of a child.

For my ILP I'm in a law class that is taught by Drexel students. It's going very well, I'm learning a lot of new things that are very helpful in my everyday life. I've been learning about the different laws and debating skills. I may do it again next year as well because it's interesting. There is a debating competition but I did not do it this year but if I take the class again next year I will be participating in it.
ILP Blog Post
During my time volunteering as a junior Counselor at Bridesburg Boys and Girls Club I found that getting to know the kids and Counselors and being able to fit in smoothly with everybody went very well. There was no period of awkwardness or negative attitudes from the kids. I'm looking forward to getting closer to the people there. I only volunteer on Wednesdays for a couple hours, every time I go back the next week it seems like starting over each time. I think making sure the children/campers learn from the camp and making sure they enjoy their time is important. If they have to stay in a place for a couple hours to wait for their parents I imagine that the time they spend should be joyous. I cannot wait to keep volunteering there, I not only get credits for it, but I enjoy working there.
Finney Dazzles in Debut; Strikes out 12 in another 1-Hitter for The Rocket as they knock off King 12-2
In his debut as a Rocket, Leon Finney was in total command striking out 12 and only surrendering one earned run to an overmatched squad from King. For the 2nd game in a row a Rocket Ace held the opponent to just 1 hit over five innings and let the offense beat up their counterpart.
Tony Brown got it started off by smashing a double down the right field line and he would score off a classic Kevin Courtney rip single. It was 6-0 when Courtney came up for a 2nd time in the 1st with the bases loaded, but another hot shot was barely snagged by King's SS to temporarily stop the bleeding.

Leon got in on the action too with 4RBis of his own to add to Courtney's 3 and Brown's 2. Freshman Catcher Avi Cantor, who fearlessly caught Finney's heat and dealt with his last second movement, also had a great day at the plate going 3 for 3 and reaching base in all his plate appearances. Yet for all that offense, Finney was simply dealing, making their better hitters look silly swatting at balls ducking out of the zone or scaring them back by 80+mph laser beams in on the hands. Couldn't ask for a better debut in Rocket blue.
SLA (2-0) faces Bodine on Mon, 4/4 in Mt. Airy. Come out and support a Rocket run at a City Title.
