The Neuroscience of Psychopaths

Posted by Jade Schweitzer in Science And Society - Best - Y on Sunday, June 5, 2016 at 5:12 pm

Throughout the past few years the scientific study of criminology has been combining their studies with neuroscience. These two scientific communities have come together to study the correlation of biology in the brain and criminal activity. In several studies there have been major differences between the brains of violent psychopaths and healthy ‘normal’ brains.

The definition of a psychopath is, a person who engages repeatedly in criminal and antisocial behavior without remorse or empathy for those victimized. In recent studies of the human brain, scientists would take CT (Computerized tomography) scans, these scans are a type of x-ray that show different 3D cross sectional views of the brain and it’s functionality.

It was found that in comparing CT scans of psychopaths as compared to healthy brains there were obvious differences between the two.

brain scans
brain scans

As shown in the image above, the ‘normal’ brain is eliciting an emotional response, while the scan of the psychopath’s brain is completely inactive in the frontal lobe. Within the frontal lobe is the amygdala, which control emotional responses, and the hippocampus which is responsible for memories and emotional ties. These portions being dark, shows that in the brain of a psychopath, they not only don’t feel emotions, but they don’t have any emotional ties, memories, or responses at all.

These findings put into perspective just how blatant the difference can be between criminals and the victimized. The biggest issues in trying to prosecute these individuals however, is that they can be born without this feeling of empathy, or through their childhood and environmental exposure can be turned into criminals. Without knowing directly what causes this neurological response, treating it is extremely difficult, and the prosecution of these criminal individuals is difficult as well. Because yes, these people can be kidnappers, rapists, and murderers, all cut and dry violent crimes, but the severity and time span of their punishment by law comes into question when the point is broached, whether or not they were able to control themselves.

To put it further into perspective let me ask you this, if you were unable to feel compassion, empathy, passion, or remorse for your actions, would you think it fair for you to be sent to prison for your criminal actions? Would you argue that without understanding emotions you couldn’t fully understand your actions? These are the questions scientists have been researching through clinical trials and brain scanning of convicted criminals, jury members, criminals themselves, and the families of those individuals as well as those who’ve been victimized.

Jade Schweitzer: Capstone

Posted by Jade Schweitzer in Capstone - Manuel - Wed on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at 2:26 pm
In my Capstone I focused on the body modification community. I decided to take photos and interviews showcasing different people’s body art as well as the stories that accompany them. Throughout this project I had many hiccups and the project constantly changed and evolved based off multiple difficulties I had gathering information and media. In the end I compiled all the photos I got and all my interview pieces into a website as my final product that could be public to the world, and that I could continue to add to and even expand after the final deadline, or even further on down the line in my life. This topic is so special to me because my father is covered in tattoos and I’ve been in love with body modification since I was a little girl, and I was hoping to spread the word about how beautiful and interesting the art and people who wear it are.

"Ava Olsen, Piercing Interview." Jade Schweitzer. Personal interview. 8 Jan. 2016.

Although she has no tattoos Ava has a multitude of ear piercings, multiple per lobe and different cartilage piercings. Now she has no desire to get any tattoos at this moment in time, however she is highly appreciative of them, and in the futures plans to get even more piercings. Starting out with commonplace single lobe piercings, ever since getting her second lobe piercing has been hooked and in the market for more. Her right ear has a few more piercings than her left, and hopefully she will be filling that gap and then continuing to get even more after.

Zaria Linton’s boyfriend of almost four years, covered in tattoos, barely pierced, and actually a tattoo artist and model himself brings an interesting perspective to the table with his interview.

Coming from a conservative and religious family his parents were completely against tattooing and body modification which obviously caused and causes hiccups with his family life.

For his upcoming 18th birthday Joseff plans on getting a micro tattoo, themed around his life’s passion, skateboarding. So that no matter where he goes or what he is doing, whether his board is on him or not he always has a piece of what he has devoted his life to since he was twelve years old.

"Kristina Scalia-Jackson, Tattoo/Piercing Interview." Jade Schweitzer. Personal interview. 8 Jan. 2016.

Kristina’s interview revealed a lot about her tattooed and pierced history. All of her tattooes have seriously personal ties into her life and family, and being discriminated against, not because of her permanent tattoo choices, but her piercing decisions. Originally have multiple cartilage, lobe, and industrial piercings in each ear she was told to take them out during a summer employment, which actually resulted in a number of her piercings closing, she intends on getting them reopened, although has yet to have that done. Her tattooes are respectful, classic, catholic rooted tributes to her grandparents, meant to serve as a reminder of their memory and her love for them.

This information is helpful to this project by opening up the cultural history this company along with its founder has in the tattooing world, how society has grown from thinking that only veterans and alcoholics could have tattoos, and also giving a decent, yet brief history of some tattooing styles, like American Traditional.

The subjects grew to forget they had tattoos, or realize the incredible sense of community, respect, belonging, and self expression that comes with body modification, and even that their art spoke for them while they didn’t have to say anything. Watching how quickly their opinions changed, over just a week with temporary tattooes shows a full spectrum of ideas, thoughts, and even general misunderstandings of not only the mod. community, but also of the art itself.

"Zaria Linton, Tattoo/Piercing Interview." Jade Schweitzer. Personal interview. 7 Jan. 2016.

This interview with Science Leadership Academy Alumni Zaria Linton was very enriching and in depth. She is not only covered in over twelve tattoos, some of which tattooed by her own boyfriend, Frankie Lopez (also interviewed), but also thoroughly pierced. Stemming from her initial body modifications starting in High school Zaria has been able to attain and keep steady well paying jobs, is in school, and is currently a model for an independent agency. She spoke in depth about the hangups she is having in her budding modeling career, as she is not fully complete in her tattooing yet, she would like to have a few of her tattoos touched up/fixed, and fill the gaps she has on her arms etc, while her manager is telling her to only get her corrections done and stop adding to her modifications, as the more she has the rougher a time she will have getting modeling offers as anything other than a tattoo model. Although Zaria aims to one day be a successful female tattoo model of color.

David Bowie for Gender Expression

Posted by Jade Schweitzer in Gender Studies - Menasion - d1 on Monday, April 11, 2016 at 2:34 pm

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 at the age of 49, Bowie was most widely known for his strange yet talented performances and highly grossing career as a singer, songwriter, and overall famous musician, that being said he was so much more than that. Throughout the earliest years of his musical career he was seen in outrageous and complex costumes both in photoshoots, album covers, and live shows. Given as this was in 1969 when “American morals and values” were the most important facet of day to day life there was a huge culture shock surrounding the man in tights and a full face of makeup.

David Bowie was definitely the pioneer for outwardly queer men and the concept of androgyny in American culture. Given as he would go out into the world appearing to be stereotypically feminine or just not masculine donning his alien alter ego and stage persona Ziggy Stardust, during a time when gender roles and stereotypes were a huge deal. Now thankfully for timing women were at this time around the early 70’s starting to fight for equality and the concept of not being straight and not fitting into the heteronormative boxes laid out at birth based off sex was easy to run with.

“Bowie meant so much to so many, but for a number of people who have fought to subvert gender binaries and resist labels in a world that demands them, he made self-acceptance fashionable.” After the original culture shock of his appearance and persona Bowie’s very presence influenced many people to be comfortable in their skin, regardless of how you express yourself and whatever you decided to wear. Arguably paving the way for modern style icons like Jeffree Star, a makeup and style icon who gained popularity on the internet, openly gay and proud of his androgyny, openly praised Bowie in a tribute, for allowing people to be fearless and be themselves, “...thinking of how many doors this one man had opened for people like me. THANK YOU David Bowie for being the definition of "fearless" and making it OK for people like me to express themselves, and be happy”.

Braille Literacy

Posted by Jade Schweitzer in Science And Society - Best - Y on Monday, April 4, 2016 at 2:55 pm
Braille is a system of writing, reading, and overall communication for blind or visually impaired people. While I knew that I was wondering what else there was to know about Braille. There are currently three styles of Braille, although the basic structure of Braille is made in cells of six, whichever dots are raised corresponds to a letter, and in a single cell there are 36 unique combinations that can be made. Now Braille because it can't actually be physically spoken is technically not a language, and the overall availability of Braille 'speakers' and teachers is scarce. Most blind or visually inhibited people (up to 75% of them) can actually read print, so Braille is almost unnecessary. To write Braille you need a slate and a stylus, a machine that resembles a typewriter, and is really slow to use and produces a lot of noise. Because you need this special tool to create readable Braille text it is more difficult to make universally available for those in need.

The Namesake vs. Media

Posted by Jade Schweitzer in Reading, Writing And Rising Up - Block - B on Friday, January 29, 2016 at 12:56 pm

Throughout current culture in America, and arguably all over the world, communication is constantly evolving, and so are the mediums we all choose to express ourselves. Instead of walking up to each other and establishing a connection, or explaining to each other why we like the things we do, we just read it, maybe in the 140 characters of a tweet, or the 150 characters of an Instagram bio. The information we choose to post or the media we share with our followers is our definition of ourselves, ‘This is what you see, and that is how I want you to see me.’ In other cultures names or titles define who people are, what relationships they will have, and can convey storybooks worth of information, with just a few syllables. For the purposes of this paper the culture that will be examined is that of Bengali individuals and their lives portrayed when immigrating to America in the book, The Namesake written by Jhumpa Lahiri.

The main character, Nikhil Gangoli spends the entire book agonizing over his name, torn between his inherited Bengali culture, and his born to America lifestyle he spends all his time letting his name define him. He thinks people don’t take him seriously because of his name, originally Gogol, when he finds out, or rather as the reader you find out the only person not taking him seriously, or constantly doubting every move he makes, is himself.

“He is afraid to be Nikhil, someone he doesn't know. Who doesn't know him...It's a part of growing up, they tell him, of being a Bengali.” (Chapter 3 Paragraph 13) This quote taken from The Namesake is from Gogol’s early youth, when he gets renamed from his pet name, Gogol. Originally he is not fond of this name, because it is unfamiliar and uncomfortable for him to change what everyone calls him, his life title. So as a young boy, he chooses to stay Gogol, which later on he regrets, thinking his pet name is stupid, and changes it back to Nikhil. This back and forth struggle over, what people will call him, how people will view him, and the struggle of defining himself through a title that, at the end of the day doesn’t matter is the biggest theme of the book, and for many throughout their entire lives.

Through the way media has evolved, to include every part of our lives, people no longer know what it is to define one’s self, everyone simplifies and belittles what and who they are, to be interesting at a glance. This makes everything less meaningful, when people throughout the world should be able to just embrace their complexities. In a recent podcast titled, Finding the Self in Selfie (This American Life, 2015) a few teenage girls were talking about their experiences and familiarity with the rules of interacting on Instagram, and what it means to comment or double tap.

“Especially because we, like just started High school, so we’re meeting a lot of new people, so you would comment on someone’s photo who you’re not really super close with or that you don’t know really well, and it's sort of a statement, like, ‘I wanna be friends with you’ or ‘I wanna get to know you’ or like, ‘I think you’re cool’. If someone that you don’t know very well commented on your photo, it's sort of like an unspoken agreement that you have to comment back on their photo. Like when you’re making new friends, if they comment on your photo, you comment on their photo.”

Almost to say that the way to meet new people and force friendships is through your online persona, how you present, or even more to the point, sell yourself. Later in the interview the incoming freshman girls admit, that the way you present yourself online, is almost like you’re marketing yourself, like you are the product, manager, and the marketing team, trying to keep people interested and concerned with knowing about you and your life. Squeezing anything cool or notable about yourself into an Instagram bio, or caption, and sticking a filter on a group picture of your friends having “Tons of fun!” being the only thing keeping us, in this generation current. And beyond that, people making friends and even romantic partners or hookups in the private message sections, or DMs of Instagram.

“...I tell her, don't you hate when you get screenshot, Bitch that DM wasn't for everybody, I love tha gram I love tha gram, I'm addicted to it I know I am...” A piece of a very popular rap right now, brought to us by Yo Gotti, who may not be a credible source at first glance, but as a voice for the young of this generation, and the behavior now known as normal, very trustworthy. People being debased to a steady photostream on their phones. This is being highly studied all over the world, and the impact of the internet in general on the mass public has been scrutinized by many since the mid 90’s, but the most powerful words, come from an actress, a media personality, and someone you think would be completely uninvolved in public speaking, Thandie Newton, who in her thirteen minute TED Talk addressed embracing self, and otherness.

“We each have a self, but I don’t think that we’re born with one...The fundamental state of ‘oneness’ is lost on us very quickly...it’s no longer valid, or real...” This transition from having a fundamental sense of ‘oneness’ to being completely withdrawn from everything comes quickly, almost without warning. Unfortunately though, most young adults choose to isolate themselves into different internet profiles in an attempt to recreate that oneness through a self-constructed image that in truth can never fully capture their entire presence. That being said, this trend will likely never end, but the self imposed need to sell ourselves on our media will hopefully be less impending through the different voices pointing out this almost self destructive behavior.

Heathers, Put to the Test

Posted by Jade Schweitzer in Gender Studies - Menasion - d1 on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at 11:00 pm

The film I’m choosing to review for this assignment, is Daniel Water’s 1988 movie, Heathers.

This movie actually, throughout different scenes in the movie passes both tests, the different Heathers talk to each other about many things, most of which are admittedly vapid, but are not about boys. In the movie there are three girls named Heather, who are secondary characters, and the fourth member of their high school clique is the main character, Veronica. Who as the main focus of the movie passed the Mako Mori test. She has her own narrative, backstory, and complete perspective throughout the movie, that at points involves a man, but does not revolve around him, and in the end she leads to his demise.

Thinking on the parameters of these different tests to asses how biased/gender based movies are, I noticed that a lot of these tests have rules that revolve around the female members of the cast, or lack there of. And if I were to make my own test I would do so a little differently.

1: Is there an equal presence of male/female characters?

2: Do the character’s relationships hinge on romance/sex between the sexes?

3: Are there characters throughout the movie that are purely to further the theme of sexualization and not relevant in any other capacity?

ie-Don Jon, the numerous woman in the start of the film, that you see have sex with the male character, then have nothing else to do with the movie, having no actual weight to the story.

Looking at the test I’ve come up with, I could probably add more if I thought about it long enough, and in all honesty, I’ll probably never be happy with it, and I’m not sure if all movies will eventually pass any test like this, but it is interesting to see the portrayal of different people based off of such trivial details, like gender in the media.

She is from an Irish Catholic family. Torn between church and science.

She is from Philly and Ireland

She is working, a young mother, uninhibited by the gender boundaries other provide.

She is unbothered, unfazed, and uninterested.

She isn't held back.

She is my mother.

A CASE OF CONFUSION

He had been casing the house for almost two weeks, checking to see when they were home and if they had any security. From all he could gather, they didn’t, so he saved the date for all his plans. Self gratification and law breaking, something could look forward to.

Thursday definitely. They both work late until at least 10pm and they’ve got no reason to come home early. With them both gone by 7:30am I’ll definitely have enough time to do whatever I want. Get in, take all their shit, and get out, no muss no fuss. No kids, no dogs, no hangup. Absolute perfection.

He really put honest hard work and time into this, which considering the context spoke volumes to his character, or so you’d think. You’d think he was malicious, that he had a grudge for those with more than him, or that he had something against this particular upper middle class couple. But if that's a bet you’d make, you’d loose. Jax had no real motive, aside from boredom. He had gone to high school, graduated, and went to community college, had a place of his own and a job. But, all that aside his life was terribly mundane and not exactly what you’d call exciting. So he got a little inventive and decided killing time, and getting rich would be more fun.

Find a prospect, pop a squat and watch. Boom, two to four weeks killed depending on the difficulty of the environment. Break in, lift, sell. Another night, another score; simple as tying your shoes. I don’t have what I need for this yet though, and that could prove problematic.

Jax took out his phone and dialed for Leo.

“Hey man, you home? I’m gonna be stopping by real soon today.” He could hear Leo rustling around at his place.

“Yea, I’m home. When you coming through? Cause honestly right now I’m not really good for company.”

Was he lying? Why would he feel the need to do that, I know everything he does, he’s a goddamn crank dealer, pimp, with a pawn shop that doubles as a home. That's all common knowledge, so why the fuck is he jerking me around?

“I was planning to stop by soon. I’m maybe five blocks away, so about a half. I’m walking.” He could hear Leo on the other end exhale then suck his teeth.

“Yea I guess that’s all good.” With that he hung up.

Putting his phone back in his pocket Jax stood from his seat on the stoop that in the past few days had become his home, lit a cigarette and started walking. After strolling about five blocks he dipped into the first alley on his left, and started banging on the green caged door blocking his entry into Leo’s. After about 15 minutes a blonde girl wearing a grateful dead t shirt and heels opened the gate in front of the door. Jax followed her back up the stairs into Leo’s.

“Hey man, I guess you can see that I was a little busy before you called.” He was sitting on the couch in the back room the stairwell lead to, his feet up on a milk crate with nothing else but an ashtray sitting on top.

“Yea well, whatever. I just need my usual, I have a job coming up and I need to be prepared.”

Leo looked up at him, his mouth contorting into a smirk.

“Your stuff is all behind the counter upstairs on the shelves. Get your shit then you can pay me after the job, I know you’ll have the money then.”

“I’ve got the cash now, that’s not an issue.”

He was too busy with his blonde, resuming what was most likely keeping them busy for fifteen minutes while he waited outside. Leo gestured for Jax to leave, so he made his way upstairs.

He’s so damn rude, you’d think having a job that left him talking and dealing with people all day he’d be nicer, or at least more polite. There was a black duffle on the floor next to the shelves Leo told him about. His supplies were inside, drill, screwdriver, duct tape, and obviously the most important, the bag itself.

The days leading up to his plan were just as mundane as the rest of his life usually was. Squeezing himself into lecture halls, cramming for finals, and trying not to run himself into a wall, but when Thursday finally rolled around Leo’s whole life felt different. His sight was clearer, and he was unusually calm. With a clear schedule and all his tools in toe he stopped just long enough to buy a coffee and a new pack of cigarettes at the gas station a few blocks away.

It’s only 6:30am, so I have an hour to survey what’s going on in there before I run in there blind.

After sitting on a neighbor's stoop obscured by bushes for almost an hour, the perfect time had arrived.

The car rolled out the driveway on and down the street, leaving a pristine and empty house open for Jax to raid as he pleased. After waiting almost a half hour he made his move. Crossing the street and walking up to the back door, being careful to look like he knew what he was doing and as if he belonged there.

Aright, let's get this door off its hinges, get in, pocket whatever, and get out. Start with the kitchen and dining room, then up the stairs, down the hall, and follow suit all the way up, then a final sweep down and out the door.

Following the plan Jax moved through the kitchen and dining room, gathering up all the silver, then moving stealthily up the stairs, to the master bedroom, taking jewelry and anything else of value he could find. After looking through the rest of the house he got to the third floor, and noticed a difference of the carpet in the hall and under the final unopened door in the house.

The entire house is carpeted the same, accept this room. They probably got the best stuff in the house in this room here.

With that thought he slammed open the door to a pink wonderland. A little brunette girl sitting in the middle of a bed with butterfly comforters surrounding her, she just sat there and stared straight into Jax’s eyes. He stood there dumbfounded for a couple seconds, then whirled around again and pulled the door closed again.

What the hell, I didn’t know there were any children in this house at all. She looks at least six, she should be in school or something right? How well did she see me? Why is she in bed in a house alone at 7:00am?

He had been standing there in a whirlwind of thought and concern when he heard a tiny shuffling behind the door, then felt little fingers poking his ankle from under the door. He turned around, lowering himself to the floor and laying down so he could see under the crack of the door. There he found a pair of chestnut brown eyes staring back at him.

“What’re you doing in this house all alone little one?” Jax asked out of a genuine place of concern from the bottom of his heart. The little eyes just kept looking at him, unblinking, and focused.

“They always leave me home, I just stay in bed. I’m quite, so its okay, right?”

“No baby girl, it’s not okay. If you want to, you can come with me, I’ll open the door and we can go to my house, and you can play games and run around.” He just laid there, on the floor, waiting for her to respond, or to try and poke him from under the door again. She just laid there and looked back at him, and for the first time Jax truly hoped that someone would see the good in him and trust him, she needed someone to take care of her, and maybe, just maybe he thought he would be the one to do that for her.

Shrews all stuck in a Daydream

Posted by Jade Schweitzer in English 3 - Pahomov - C on Monday, April 20, 2015 at 8:39 pm
The movie Daydream Nation and the Shakespearean play The Taming Of The Shrew are comparable in many ways. Ranging from the deception throughout different relationships, the casual narcissism, and pretending to be people your not. Although this play is over a hundred years old and the movie came out in 2007 there are many parallels. Caroline Wexler, the main character in Daydream Nation is a girl that has been uprooted from her life in the city and placed into a school where the students are higher than the grades, while attending this school and getting used to daily life in this new town she decides to pretend to be someone else, and this event is brought on by her idea to have an affair with her English teacher, but also to sleep with one of the many stoners in her classes.

Petruchio, from The Taming of The Shrew is the suitor that decides to marry Baptista’s oldest daughter, Katherine. He does this not out of love but for her inheritance, and in order to make his marriage to her smooth and as painless as possible he must as the title suggests, tame her into a quiet and obedient wife that will do as he says without question. Although the motives for the romances are different these two sources of media show relationships started out of one specific goal are generally more trouble than they are worth.

Signior Hortensio, 'twixt such friends as we

Few words suffice; and therefore, if thou know

One rich enough to be Petruchio's wife,

As wealth is burden of my wooing dance,

Be she as foul as was Florentius' love,

As old as Sibyl and as curst and shrewd

As Socrates' Xanthippe, or a worse,

She moves me not, or not removes, at least,

Affection's edge in me, were she as rough

As are the swelling Adriatic seas:

I come to wive it wealthily in Padua;

If wealthily, then happily in Padua.

(Scene1.Act2.10)

This quote from The Taming of The Shrew is Petruchio’s monologue explaining his plan and reasoning behind his impending marriage to Katherine. That he plans on marrying her for her father’s money that she will inherit after he passes, and that her shrewdness is a non-issue for him, because no woman can make him as happy as the money he seeks. So, through this greed and narcissism he also states he will break Katherine of her rude and boisterous ways to make her quiet and obedient. This as is seen previously throughout the play, will be no easy task as many men have tried and failed to woo her, and she is a handful of trouble, although he states that the relationship (to him) will be worth it for the money. And that is his only motivation for calming the tempest that is Katherine. This is comparable to Daydream Nation because when Caroline decides to have an affair with Barry, her English teacher her main motivation is to kill the ever encroaching boredom of her new school and town. That going through with this taboo would make life more exciting and interesting, and that as a whole is her only real interest in being with him. Both characters starting out with their own motives for pursuing their relationships.

" I don't know why the idea came to me when it did, but I knew it would instantly make life more interesting. Don't we all wanna be somebody different sometimes? Someone smarter and sexier and bolder than we really are. Or maybe I just looked, and saw someone that was as lonely as me."

This is what Caroline is thinking to herself when making the decision to seduce Mr.A (Barry, her English teacher). She states that yes, there may be some underlying reason based off feelings of attraction, but her main motivation here is to occupy herself, to distract herself from her obviously dull life in this new place.

Thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper,

Thy head, thy sovereign; one that cares for thee

And for thy maintenance; commits his body

To painful labor both by sea and land,

To watch the night in storms, the day in cold,

Whilst thou li'st warm at home, secure and safe;

And craves no other tribute at thy hands

But love, fair looks, and true obedience--

Too little payment for so great a debt.

This quote is taken from the very end of the play, when Patricio tells Katherine to tell the other wives how to serve their husbands, this speech actually showing that she has been tamed, or at least pushed into acting like she is. She is going through the motions of saying exactly what her husband wants to hear and she is doing it publicly to effectively tame the other woman too, bleeding Patricio’s overzealous and greedy methods into the other couple’s relationships. Much like what happened in Daydream Nation.

“My mom once told me that if you ever want to make a man happy... flatter his vanity. Tell him he's handsome. She said not to bother calling him interesting or clever, because that's what their bosses and colleagues are for. But every man carries a secret dream of being handsome, and desperately yearns to be recognized as such.”

In the end the paths of the two stories deviate. The Taming of The Shrew ends in Katherine bowing to Patricio’s will and being tamed, while Daydream Nation ends with Caroline leaving Barry and falling for a guy that was in love with her from the moment he saw her. Katherine seems unhappy and more like a slave then a wife when Shrew ends, and during the affair Barry and Caroline seem to be on edge and uncomfortable with each other, showing the more single minded a relationship the more problems arise, and the less it seems worth it. Thankfully though, as is seen in the differences in the ending of Daydream Nation society has changed so there are more options for both men and woman in day to day life as well as relationships, so going into relationships with something to accomplish is less and less common, and people are generally happier.

Jade Schweitzer Q3

Posted by Jade Schweitzer in Art Advanced - Hull - a2 on Friday, April 17, 2015 at 8:39 pm
This quarter, art class aside was very difficult for me for many different personal reasons, and that defiantly had an effect on my productivity in art. I completed my assignments, although my work seemed to come out differently. More smooth, utilizing more curved lines, and softening my usually harsh lines. Most of my inspiration and my idea this quarter came from things I am used to seeing everyday, like ashtrays, snails, and snakes. Using these memories helped to calm me down, and made concentrating on making them look as realistic as I could in the moment much easier. I took steps this quarter to try and improve on areas I had little to no comfort in, such as drawing people in general, let alone creating a self portrait, as well as working on physical textures, like the scales on my snake.
Overall this quarter I expanded my comfort zone, learned new techniques for creating my art, and became more willing to share and get my art critiqued by peers.

Jade Schweitzer Q2 Art

Posted by Jade Schweitzer in Art Advanced - Hull - a2 on Friday, January 30, 2015 at 9:45 am
I created all these different pieces of art for Quarter 2 at very different times in my life. I've had a hard time personally, with three deaths in my family, one family member in the hospital and the pressure of having to set up the building blocks for the rest of my life. I create the art I do, to get people's attention, to show them what I can do, and that I matter.
To show my creative spirit, and that even though I might not understand Algebra, or Physics, or World History that I understand other things. Like how people can change over time, and what people think when everything falls apart around them.
My art is my venting time and my emotions.

The Changing World vs. The Self

Posted by Jade Schweitzer in English 3 - Pahomov - C on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at 9:21 am

Analytical:

Many things can change within a given amount of time, throughout life there are many situations where you have to adapt to get through to the next task, to the next day. The individual has to change themselves in a positive or negative way to be able to get through the pressing situation in their lives, and the changing world evolves based on past mistakes. The changing world and “the self” are related through a mutual bond of pain and adaptation.  Generally the bond of pain has to do with loss or negative issues within the world, and the adaptation is how the world and individual change within themselves.

Throughout the book, “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien, the characters change based on the unfortunate things that happen to them. One of the best examples of this is at the beginning of the book, while O’Brien is still introducing the characters, saying their names and what they carry. In this moment the author is talking about a soldier named Jimmy Cross and how he deals with having to be in the war while the love of his life is elsewhere. “They were called legs or grunts. To carry something was to hump it, as when Lieutenant Jimmy Cross humped his love for Martha up the hills and through the swamps.” (Pg 3)

The soldiers have to learn to adapt to the new weight of their equipment, which obviously puts new weight on their backs plus the strain of being in a new place. This causes them physical pain (at least a little). And they have to learn to deal with the pain/strain and move on. They must trudge on through the new environment they are in and adapt to everything they go through to stay alive so they can get home. The changing world is were they actually are (in the field aka Vietnam), and the self is exactly that (inside all their heads/how they feel). This is really personified throughout this quote, even though it is pretty short, just by Jimmy deciding to focus more on ‘humping’ his weight and the job he has to do rather than Matha at home. He’s adapting to his situation by blocking out the part of his life that is causing the biggest problem; Martha is making his service difficult, so he decided to block her out and think more about what he has to do, rather than what he misses. And the over all changing world just goes on through the war it is already in, which is the personification of pain for the world. The fact that its getting destroyed over territory and politics etc.

Tim's explanations of what the men have to deal with show more examples of how the men adapt He makes their characters seem more human so can connect with them and sort of feel their pain.(Pg 21) “They were tough. They carried all the emotional baggage of men who might die. Grief, terror, love, longing- these were intangibles, but the intangibles had their own mass and specific gravity, they had terrible weight.”Again the soldiers have to deal with all the different issues/situations they go through in the war, and everything that also doesn’t happen. Like all the men that don’t survive, all the people they can’t see everyday, all the battles they don’t win etc. They also have to deal with everything bad that may or may not have happened to them before they even went into the service. The changing world in this situation is again where they are, but more specifically being in the military (U.S Army). The self is also within the subject, more exactly, were the individual is in their mind. Mostly involving their acceptance of past events (Emotional stability). Just generally meaning that the world changes its scenery and location, while the individual changes as a person to adapt to changes around them.

While in the war a soldier named Rat Kiley writes a letter to the sister of his best friend, who was just killed in battle. He does this because they were so close during their service and he thought it would be better than her just getting the Killed In Action notice. After he sends the letter out she never writes back, and this is Rat’s reaction to her lack of a response, “Listen to Rat Kiley. Cooze, he says. He does not say bitch. He certainly does not say woman, or girl. He says cooze. Then he spits and stares. He’s nineteen years old- it’s too much for him- so he looks at you with those big sad gentle killer eyes and says cooze, because his friend is dead, and because it’s incredibly sad and true: she never wrote back.”(Pg 69)

This proves the point that the changing world and “the self” are related through a mutual bond of pain and adaptation. It illustrates that the ‘characters’ or soldiers in the real world will adapt each other’s stories for one another and tell them as their own. Effectively this makes their coping go over easier. Although they still feel the need to tell the stories, which is a way of expressing the emotions they felt in order to adapt. In most situations the emotions they’re expressing, his pain from past war experiences.

Even throughout different interviews with the author of “The Things They Carried” Tim O’Brien alludes to the issues he and his fellow soldiers had during the war that he touches on in the books, even though most of the characters in the book are fictional they are based off real people he met.

''We all wondered why the place was so hostile. We did not know there had been a massacre there a year earlier. The news about that only came out later, while we were there, and then we knew. There is a monument in My Lai now and I want to see it.''

This is probably the most obvious and literal quote that could be found. The changing world having to go through a massacre, a large loss of life in a certain area, then having that area be physically changed into a memorial for those who lost their lives during that tragedy. The individual being the people that were affected, the killed, their families, the community members. Then those individuals somehow having to adapt in order to cope with all the changes caused by the massacre itself.

During this same interview with New York Times, O’Brien was speaking to the interviewer about how he felt getting drafted, the shock he felt and what he did after receiving the notice himself.

“His reaction to the draft notice still surprises him. ''I went to my room in the basement and started pounding the typewriter,'' he recalled. ''I did it all summer. It was the most terrible summer of my life, worse than being in the war. My conscience kept telling me not to go, but my whole upbringing told me I had to. That horrible summer made me a writer. I don't know what I wrote. I've still got it, reams of it, but I'm not willing to look at it. It was just stuff - bitter, bitter stuff, and it's probably full of self-pity. But that was the beginning.''”

Tim openly admits to how he felt as his life changed around him. The war becoming worse to the point where the military needed more bodies to the point where more men were drafted into service. He changed in himself, based on the fear and shock he felt at having to go into a situation that could possibly lead to his death.

Narrative:

Most of my family is involved with the Military, and even those who aren’t work for the government. My father was in the Army, My uncle was in the Marine Core, My aunt in the Navy, and my mother, grandmother, great-aunt, and uncle, all work for the IRS. Reading Tim O’Brien’s “The Things They Carried” was very helpful in putting everything they had to go through into perspective.

More so my uncle Ray honestly. He came home about four years ago, but he was flown overseas and served in Iraq. Dropped into an unfamiliar place, fresh outta high school and dead set on bringing the family honor. Although thats not really what happened. He doesn’t suffer from PTSD or any other of the myriad of psychological issues he very well could from being in the war.

Although if you go through his phone you’ll see pictures of what its like, and he has buried many friends while he was in the war. Which is touched on very often throughout the book and also in interviews with the author himself. “The Things They Carried”, shows how the soldiers felt doing what they were ordered, and how they reacted to all the death and destruction around them.

That was always something I wanted to better understand, because I knew that my uncle had seen dead bodies, and buildings crumble. Seeing those things can completely change a person and their point of view on life, so I wondered how that affected Ray. I could never actually ask him though, because even if it tore him apart inside he would put on a brave face and act like it didn't phase him in the slightest.

Tim opened my eyes to the fact, that sometimes people in the service just can’t talk about those things, that I can’t just expect anyone to pour out everything they ever saw in the field to me. That sometimes its better not to ask, and just let your imagination assume the worst, and try to be as kind as you can. Just show them all the love you have, so they don’t forget its there when they need it. Just always be happy when they make it home, and try to be the best family you can when they do. Give them support. Everything you can, but not too much so you don’t overwhelm them into thinking there is something wrong with them. Just in general, take everything in stride and don’t think about it too hard, just love the person that comes back as much as you loved them before they were deployed.

Jade's Quarter 1 Art Gallery

Posted by Jade Schweitzer in Art - Senior Art - Hull - E on Friday, November 14, 2014 at 5:37 pm
This quarter I completed four art projects. First I paired up with my friend Rosalie Swana and started sketching out a sample for the ceiling tile we created. She wrote out the Arabic word for peace (the word/phrase also means other things thats just paraphrasing). After we stetted it on the paper and had it approved by our art teacher we transferred it onto the tile and started painting. Truth be told I didn’t do much other then painting, and touch up colors.

After that was finished I free-hand painted a sunset over water. Without and real purpose other then to paint a killer sky. After about forty minuets I somehow painted the sky to appear like it was bleeding. At the time it really spoke to me and came off as beautiful, although the longer I look at it the less beautiful and more garish it comes off.  Another thing I created was, one sharpie sketch of Jack Skellington’s face. The original idea was to use that completed sketch as a stencil to carve my jack-o-lantern. Later on in the process of putting the stencil on my squash I realized that it was way too small, and the stencil walked all the way up the sides. That combined with having to cut the top off made it seem completely unrealistic to carve that on the squash. Instead I just carved a star on it free-hand. I thought that it would look nice, and would be fairly easy to fix if I carved it too small.

After that I was supposed to sketch a self portrait. Although I didn’t do that I did take a self portrait. The picture is grainy and its obviously not drawn, but it is black and white and I figured that was better then nothing. The real reason I didn’t sketch the portrait is because I can’t draw faces, or even humans really. So I just gave up before I started.

Really the only thing that inspires me for my visual art is what I see and feel in the world around me. I guess the reason I can’t draw people or their faces is because I try not to look at them while I’m out in the real world or on the streets. Not because I dislike people or have an issue with noticing them, but really because so many people in the world can only see themselves and the people around them, so I try to look beyond that and see the things around everyone. Seeing the background makes everything seem less chaotic, and more simplistic, so I try to zoom in on that and use interesting colors to make them stand out as much to everyone else as much as they do to me.

Filesharing and Torrenting Music

Posted by Jade Schweitzer in English 3 - Pahomov - C on Monday, November 10, 2014 at 6:44 pm

With the current day and age technology is continuously evolving, making everything easier to come by and find. Going on google can lead to information, apps, games, and programs that help with over efficiency and productivity. These search engines can also be very helpful for finding Bit Torrents and bittorrent compatible files. These Torrents are most commonly used for illegally downloading music files like albums and songs from different bands/composers, getting all the tunage with minimal work and no pocket money. File sharing and illegal downloads are not killing the music industry, because what keeps music alive is the mutual love for it fans share.

It is becoming a common trend to illegally download things like music, books, games and apps Focusing on music, many people (mostly with jobs in the music industry/community) have been continuously saying that torrenting music is killing the industry. That supporting the band(s) or artist(s) would be putting money towards the music to allow more to be made. Although other people have been countering with the argument that the love of music kept it alive this long and will continue to do so with or without the music being top purchased on iTunes.

Dee Snider, a rock and roll legend and member of the band Twisted Sister was interviewed by LoudWire.com on the death of rock and roll. His opinion was,

“Rock ‘n’ roll is alive and well and thriving on social media, in the streets, and in clubs and concert halls all over the world. And the bands playing it are more genuine and heartfelt than ever because they are in it for one reason: the love of rock ‘n’ roll.”

This comment can be transferred to any genre of music. Most bands and artists have Facebook pages, Twitter accounts, and Instagram profiles, they leak previews of their new albums and give out free merchandise bundles. Which is according to the logic that ‘torrenting music is stealing from bands’

Recently there was a case study done by Time Magazine titled, “Illegal Music Downloads Not Hurting Industry.” This study concluded a lot of interesting data. Including:

  • Men are more likely to download music.

  • People with higher education stream more music.

  • Average income doesn’t affect the amount of music streaming.

  • Based on cultural differences/economic structure in different countries downloads vary across the globe.

The study proved that, “Specifically, the study found that legal purchases would be about 2 percent lower without illegal downloading available—meaning, yes, illegal downloads boost legal downloads. Their conclusion: people who download pirated music mostly do so for tunes they wouldn’t have ever spent money on. The positive effect of streaming was even larger.”

The article also made the point, “Clicking on a legal download website does not equal buying music, past studies have found that “some people buy and steal a lot of music because they love music”.”

The final outcome/result of the study is that the people that illegally download their music wouldn’t buy it if they didn’t torrent it. Meaning that there was no initial ravine for the music industry to be making for them to really lose any money.

A Difference Of Interests

Posted by Jade Schweitzer in English 2 - Pahomov - E on Friday, January 24, 2014 at 12:23 pm

According to the hype in the trending topics, if you are into a non-trending topic you are less than those who are trendy; including music taste, makeup, and clothing. 1There are over 7 billion different people on this Earth. Each one unique, just like the DNA and fingerprints they are born with. Now, some of these people have certain things in common- such as favorite colors, bands, and interests.

Such stigmatism's can be made specifically about certain people that are fans of heavy music. This includes the genres of metal, heavy metal, and thrash metal. Which have always been underlying genres in music- definitely not trending. People think those who listen to this music are more violent, angry, and overall on the brink of killing people. Which is definitely not true for all the fans of this form of music. This bias continues to persist to this day.

One amazing example of this is the West Memphis Three. This is a murder case were the justice system was swayed by such said biases against people who are nothing more the a little different. On May 5th 1993 there was a murder case opened. Three second grade boys were beaten, mutilated, bound, and killed. These boys were the namesake for the West Memphis Three. The police had no leads but were drawn to some teenage boys that wore all black, kept to themselves, and listened to very heavy metal, and rock and roll. The real rebels of ‘93. All joking aside these boys were convicted and sent to prison for crimes they did not commit all based on bias created by trends and marketing tactics.  In all marketing campaigns when you see pop artists their pictures and videos are usually very bright and colorful. While in heavy metal, rock, punk, and thrash music most pictures and videos are darker, and have a more serious motif. Usually the lyrics are about real life issues and feelings, while pop music is more about having fun and being cool. I am not saying that pop music is better or worse than other types of music, but I am definitely saying there is a huge bias against kids that listen to these ‘other’ kinds of music.

I can definitely relate to this. Some of my favorite bands are Of Mice & Men, Bring Me The Horizon, Megadeth, and Nirvana. These bands are all classified as Heavy Metal or Rock & Roll. And because I listen to these bands and genuinely enjoy them people form opinions and biases against me. Like, “You’re probably going to grow up to be a serial killer”, “Are you a satanist?”,"You're on drugs aren't you?" and the most popular, “Are you a lesbian?”

Somehow listening to someone expressing their feelings in a more raw fashion means I have to be societies definition of undesirable. Just as the West Memphis Three were pegged. In metal music the singers and band pour their feelings into their songs and scream it out at the top of their lungs, they don’t pretend to be calm or collected. They make their thoughts sound how they feel. But if you openly admit that you have the same feelings and refuse to water them down you are dangerous. Being that you don’t feed into the same mass delusions of complete sanity that most people in today’s world do.

In the end the West Memphis Three were released and the true culprit- a church going, faithful, and reliable stepfather of one of the boys- was placed behind bars. And thank God the police aren't shared on any of my playlists- or I just might be in prison too.

A City Speaks.

Posted by Jade Schweitzer in English 2 - Pahomov - E on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at 5:56 pm

City- synonym for cesspool.

These are my people and their stories,

Stories I helped them write.

A Truth.

They own nothing.

They want everything.

No one knows who we really are.

They don’t have pretty plastic dreams manufactured by their parents.

Searching for love, but then turning to drugs.

A Romance.

Empty Lots full of booze cans and empty prescription bottles.

No pretty green fields filled with roses and marigolds.

Makeout sessions that come in the flavors of Cigarettes and Jack Daniels

Going further than that one sweet suburbanite kiss on the Gymnasium dance floor.

Prowling the malls for free chinese food samples.

No home cooked family meals with Mom and Dad meeting the boyfriend.

A Prince.

Drive thru drug deals at Johnny Rockets.

Buying diapers with coke money.

Coping jars of baby food from K-Mart after school.

All for the baby, the mistake.

The one she helped him make.

Because city thugs dont use condoms- 13 or otherwise.

A Princess.

Three story house instead of a castle.

Two angry cats instead of friendly birds and deer.

No evil stepmother, No dead father, No siblings.

Instead of sudsy water filled pails, There is a red Pep-Boys bucket full of empty Pall Mall packs.

A Break Up.

Broken pieces of glass showering across the asphalt.

Like pretty pink cherry blossom petals.

But RED.

He cheated, so she swung,

no death...just 17 stitches and a nasty scar.

Let us be true here my friends, I do not turn out all evil.

I was built- and named after mind you- Brotherly Love.

I am not as bad as congress and politics would like you to believe.

A City Couple.

Walking in love park

A white sun dress for her and a black polo for him

strolling along.

The sit at the fountain, and he pulls out the ring.

Two hours later they are standing in line at city hall.

Four other couples as their witnesses.

No family for miles.

City Newlyweds.

No money for a honeymoon,

but enough time off at work for a five day weekend,

cooking and cleaning together.

Sitting and watching American Horror Story.

Living the life.

A City Mother.

She worries, the stress of work weighing down on her.

Can’t lose the baby.

After he is born she knows-

she will love and protect him.

A City Father.

He worries about her, and the little one.

While she was in labor he almost passed out.

It was so unsanitary.

But know he knows...

He will love and protect them.

The Babies,

One Tiny and clean and full of potential.

One born of lies and infidelity, still full of potential

Then I have to decide, I have a choice to make.

Will I ruin them, or will I build him up to all they can be?

In a way I am the most human city there is, with my possessiveness,

and indecisiveness. With my whimsical ways and last minute decisions.

This my fellow nations, cities, and towns is what I ask you.

What will we decide with our citizens?

Will we be saviuors, or the shepherds of the Damned?

Talk Hard.

Posted by Jade Schweitzer in English 2 - Pahomov - E on Monday, November 4, 2013 at 5:06 pm

You wouldn’t think that moving from Chicago to Philadelphia is a big move. But it really is. Especially if you lived there your whole life before you moved to Philly, so you have that Chicago accent. My first day at my new high school all the other juniors thought I got kicked out of my last school all the kids did all day was talk about me...and they were NOT quite about it.

‘Cause like- have you heard Damien talk? He sounds like a drug dealer or something. He probably got expelled and he always slurs his words together. He might even come to school high. Do you think he would get expelled for that?’

When in reality I’ve never been suspended. Another great thing about my school? Their speech department. Or at least thats what the vice principal was telling me in her office. She thought that because I was the talk (no pun intended) of the school that it might be in ‘my best interest’ to take two speech classes. One to assess if I had any other ‘setbacks’ and the other is specifically for kids with accents and slurs. So of course I agreed so that she would dismiss me. Biggest mistake of my Junior year. No my high school career.

So all my speech classes started the second week of school. My first two classes of the day on Monday and Friday. Let me just tell you- when I walked into that class I felt like an asshole. There were kids in wheelchairs and girls without hair and here I am just standing in the doorway. The least impaired looking one in the whole room. I mean, I don’t think you need to be impaired to need or be sent to speech therapy, but it was really obvious that I didn’t really belong in the room.

“So...Damien, what brings you here?”

“I was referred here by the vice principal. She said my accent was a ‘setback’ so here I am. “

“Well, I noticed you’re from Chicago. But you don't have any issues with your sentence or word structure. I’m going to send you down the hall to your next class, this one isn’t really for you, this class is for the mentally and physically disabled.  So I am not really sure why you were sent here.”

I didn’t even bother going to my next ‘therapy’ class. I left and went straight to the office. I walked past the nurses station and past the waiting chairs, then walked straight up to the secretary's desk.

“I would like to talk to vice principal Rasheed. I can wait.”

Twenty minutes later I’m admitted to her office. I just walk right around her and sit in the most comfortable chair I can find, I’m going to be here awhile. She takes note of my obviously pissy disposition and just gives me a snarky once over.

“I hope you know I am counting this as you skipping your speech classes- if you need to talk to me, I want you to do it on your lunch or between classes, plus you are just counteracting what is in your-”

“Don’t you dare say ‘my best interest’.  There is nothing wrong with the way I talk, I am not from the same city as you, therefore I have a different way of talking to people. Its how I grew up. That does not make me anymore or less than you, and I would love to know why one of the classes you sent me to was for the mentally and physically disabled.”

I didn't even have to wait for her to answer me. The head of the school walked in and escorted me out onto the school’s lawn. He told me to go home, that my parents had been called and that I was going to get into serious trouble the next time I skipped classes- for a ‘good reason’ or otherwise. So I walked my angry ass home, a thirteen mile walk. Took me two hours, but I was pretty mellow once I got home...my mother on the other hand was completely livid. They told her that I was cutting and causing a scene in the office.

“Those self righteous bastards.” That was all she could manage after hearing what actually happened to me. So then she went into full out terminator mode. She wanted the school to be publically humiliated. So she pulled me out of that school and she started researching everything she could think of to make what they did seem as incriminating as possible.

It took about two weeks for the whole state to find out about the issue I was having. Apparently there is a small recording device in the V.P’s office, that had caught the whole thing on tape. One of the secretary's had found it very sad...so of course what did she do? Upload the video to YouTube spilling all my information in the info bar. After that people started paticians, walk outs and strikes, all under my name. So naturally I have been getting all the heat and love for this movement. Thats were I am going now, Im in a cab in New York on my way to central park to give a speech about the issues people go through, because of course a hormonal seventeen year old would know best.

So here I go, walking up the steps to the podium, about to spill my guts on the altar of sacrifice. Just because I lived in Chicago until I was sixteen.

“Hay there. This is a huge crowd...wow, well Im flattered. I just wanted to say- That no matter the language, accent, or even dialect- we are all entitled to our voices. They are a part of what makes us special and should never be ridiculed; or under appreciated. To quote my favorite movie “Pump Up The Volume”, ‘TALK HARD. THE TRUTH IS A VIRUS.’ Goodnight”

Element Project

Posted by Jade Schweitzer in Art - Freshman - Hull on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 10:08 pm
In creating this project all five of SLA's core values.
The most important of these five is Inquiry, which was defiantly needed with this project. Since we where assigned the elements we did out projects on most of the students involved had no idea what their elements where, so we had to do extensive research on our elements in order to pick what image would be used in our print. This research consisted of, all the scientific facts associated with our elements, the people that discovered them, and interesting facts about them.
Collaboration was used throughout the process of making the printing plates themselves. Each student had to etch their symbol/image into the linoleum provided to them, and this was an exceedingly difficult task and all the students in class helped each other in getting the hang of the cutting tools and the most effective methods of maneuvering the linoleum.
When it comes to presentation every child in art class presented their best prints to the entire world. We did this by combing our technological knowledge with out art knowledge to post a blog post on the internet sharing our knowledge everywhere.
The fifth and final core value, Reflection. This value was also reflected in the blog post you are reading now. Each one showing how each publisher feels about their project and what they learned through the project process.

Negative Space Reflection/Blog:

Posted by Jade Schweitzer in Art - Freshman - Hull on Thursday, May 2, 2013 at 4:46 pm
Negative space drawings are darings where one specific object in the drawing is shaded black while the rest is left white. I could figure out which object should be shaded in my cut out (the tree, in this piece the shaded or 'black' part would be the orange background) because when we started our projects we had a reference sheet with the picture we where creating. So I traced the borders of my tree and cut out the inside of the shaded lines. Creating a stencil, so then I took my green paper and put it under my self made stencil, tracing the lines. Turning my green paper into a sketched picture of a tree. Then all I did was cut out the tree accordingly. Once all that was done I pasted my pieces on according to the opposite side of the paper which you can see in the picture below. For my sketches in my book (the pencil sketches) I drew my chair and my cup then I just shaded my background to define the negative spaces. Negative space helps the artist's eye see all aspects of the sketch they are working with. A classic example of this is Rubin's Vase. This is just a picture of a yellow vase with a white background. Although- if you make it a negative picture by coloring the vase white and the background black you see that it is really an optical illusion, with two faces looking at each other. In short it gives you a full unadulterated view of what your working with. Seeing in negative space in fact enhances the artist's and viewer's comprehension of the art. I say this because you can look at something in color and you see whats there, but if you take the color away...you see each little pen stroke, detail, and quirk giving the work more personality and originality.

Black Market Silicone Injects

Posted by Jade Schweitzer in English 1 - Kay on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at 8:59 am
This video is all about the risks of Black Market (illegal) Silicone Injections. I find this topic to be highly important because as a female know that we are all mildly insecure about our bodys. I don't want these woman's insecurity to be the case of their downfall, or even their death.

Final Perspective Drawing

Posted by Jade Schweitzer in Art - Freshman - Hull on Friday, April 19, 2013 at 8:09 pm
One thing I learned in the process of drawing this I have learned was how to draw orthogonal lines that are straight and go all the way back to your vanishing point, making things look genuinely 3D.An orthogonal line is a line that connects to another line creating a right angle. An orthogonal line alone would just look normal and flat but when you combine it with our vanishing point technique then you get to see a whole new picture that has become 3D and seems to be real. This made my drawing better by giving my sketches mew depth. Before I learned about orthogonal lines all my work looked flat and dull but after learning and understanding how to use orthogonal lines it brought a whole new type of life into my works. If I where to re-draw this I would hang the way I colored the picture. I used crayon, which I thought would give the finished product a more soft look to it giving it a sort of flow making it easy to look at. Although I realized after I finished coloring that it took away from the meaning in my pencil lines, making the picture look childish overall. Tracing the lines with crayon was also very difficult, my lines came out different widths and lengths making quite a few of my lines appear to be tilted when they where not, taking away from the finished look. Some advice I have for someone who has never drawn in one point perspective would be, to sit down with your drawing and take your time, rushing will just make you frustrated, and that will make your lines crooked. Also don't be afraid to erase, you are going to make mistakes and your going to have to make lines in places that will get covered with other shapes. If you need to erase do so.The most helpful resource at my disposal I would say, would have to be my peers. I was unsure about what to do when I started drawing and I almost gave up, but before I had a chance a few of my classmates came up to me and got me drawing. When I would get frustrated and thrown my ruler and swear I was quitting my peers would calm me down and explain what I was doing wrong to help me finish. All in all without them I wouldn't have had the patience to finish my perspective.

My NEW slide!!

Posted by Jade Schweitzer in Technology- Freshmen - Hull on Thursday, January 24, 2013 at 10:59 am
My last slide was really random, and I didn't read up on what would make the eye follow the path I set out for it. Since my first slide was judged and graded, I completely changed its look, only transferring a few basic ideas. I didn't write so much on this one, I spaced the typing well, I made sure everything was lined up, and I added a colour scheme. Making the slide altogether easier and more pleasant to look at.

For ANYONE that plans to make a slide for anything in the future, I suggest check out presentationzen.com that will really lay out what you want to do. Also- don't crowed your slides.
bad ideas.

My Slide- And all.

Posted by Jade Schweitzer in Technology- Freshmen - Hull on Monday, December 10, 2012 at 10:56 am

My slide is a little crammed, and this is because I have a lot to say. About me, and about my person. My slide reflects who I am and what I like. I love art, music [all except country] bad ideas, and all colours EXCEPT yellow.Lima beans are gross, and poka-dots bug me; they are isometrical, I am much more of a stripes person.

My slide seems childish- but then again so am I.

Acceptable use policy:

Posted by Jade Schweitzer in Technology- Freshmen - Hull on Monday, December 3, 2012 at 2:45 pm
created by: Jade, Alex, Shaion, and Kevin

Technology class :Terms of acceptable usage

1. The three major differences of SLA, SDP, TFI are.....

SLA: The only real restrictions are for social media, media sharing, and pornography.

SDP: Everything that has media sharing, social networking, pornography, file sharing, bit torrenting, spam/hacking sites, and entertainment.

TFI: You cannot go onto shopping site, pornography sites, social networking, file/media sharing, spam/hacking, entertainment, and job searching sites.

2. The most unfair rule out of all of them (applying to SDP and TFI) are the rules against using a bittorrent, because you can use that type of torrent, to download important information, and programs.

3. A change that could be made to the AUP are as follows:

 - Making is so that certain types of file sharing is enabled so that files, and media are transferable from student to student.

- Another thing that could be changed is the uses of social media. Not all social media but stuff like instagram and tumblr that could help with publishing peoples artwork.

- Also with games that need to be installed via internet, because they can cause viruses that can damage your computer and the software.

4.  Now imagine you have children write an AUP for you homework with your group. Our AUP would block simple things that children should not be on like pornography and illegal downloading  sites that could result in trouble with the government.

Children’s AUP:

No downloading ANYTHING without the password to the computer (which only le parents have)
No a Watching anything pornographic, or sexually inapropriate.
Check with le parents BEFORE making accounts on social media websites.
No bit-torrentin

Schweitzer, Jade, lucid chart, home network

Posted by Jade Schweitzer in Technology- Freshmen - Hull on Thursday, October 25, 2012 at 12:51 pm

My land area network is connected to everyone within a two block raduis from my house, which is really inconvient, and the reason why my internet is so slow. for some reason, I also don't have wifi at all, so I need to use my neighbors. Cavalier is probably not my favorite internet providers; so I would have to say that if I had my choice I would switch to Verizon. It is really fast, reliable, and it is private- you do not have to share your connection, as apposed to Cavalier.

On my land line I have both my phone and internet. So whenever you use the house phone the internet stops working, and for some reason java never works on my computer; even though it has been installed three times;so that is a problem.

All in all my internet/phone sevrvice is alright, it could be better; but it could be worse.

An OMG moment was when I figured out that Reseting the modem isn't going to fix everything. An LOL moment was when I noticed how simply complicated the process of getting the internet was.

Some advice to people who know nothing about the internet I would say; if nothing is loading don't keep clicking it over and over- That makes it load SLOWER!!
