Lobbying Post 3
Chaka Fattah supports the Clean Energy Act which would say that he is supportive of the anti-fracking movement, however he is a governmental figure and fracking brings in money which is probably why he doesn't make a direct stand quite yet. However it isn't just him it’s many Philadelphia representatives are staying quiet on the issue because the people whom are sincerely benefiting from fracking are these big oil companies. To be honest these companies are actually the ones support and fund these campaigns of our officials. Not to mention that government has had a history to have been involved with these businesses which would explain the Dick Chaney loop hole that basically negates the Safe Water Drinking Act. However the EPA said they would “weigh rules” on chemicals in fracking.
The people would be the most essential to turning this thing over because the people are everything in America. If this truly is a government by the people for the people our officials should not allow this to happen to us. Even if the officials aren't for the people they are definitely for themselves and keeping their jobs. The people are the biggest power that I would need for this issue and that could sway any political democratic political leader. There is an anti-fracking movement, but the fact they aren't big in the media tells me they aren’t big at all. There was a event November 3rd called "No Fracking Way," which had a pretty good turnout which is great however I've heard very little since then and I don't know if they are in collaboration with anti-fracking movement.

- What it's like to work as a tomato picker in Florida
- I know that the workers have to be out in the farm in extreme heat. Not only that, when they're working, they have to be very efficient and fast so that they can earn more money. They get paid only 40-50 cents per bucket of tomatoes. In addition, one bucket is like 32 lbs. No Americans will work this hard to earn only 50 cents. - The problem with buying tomatoes from Trader Joe's
- The problem with buying tomatoes from Trader Joe's is that unlike other companies, trader joe's is not participating in a organization that provides fair amount of money for the workers. The worse part is that the workers are only asking for 1 more cent per bucket. It is really shameful because everyone goes to Trader Joe's to buy groceries and Trader Joe's ask for more money than any other grocery shop. They are being selfish. - What we can do about it
- We can make this unfairness publicized so that Trader Joe's CEO can feel a guilty and pay legitimate amount of money for the poor workers that suffer.
Lobbying Post 3: Curfew
For this new Philadelphia Law of the curfew a lot of people are going along with it. I feel as though this would be a good year because not only will it clear the streets at night but it will also decrease the vandalism in the city during Friday nights when kids don't have school the next day. All of the elected officels have induced their support for the issue except for one. There's a mixture of mixed emotions on this new law, for example the deputy Everett Gillison talks about how this would be good for the public he says "If there's a time that a kid is out at a certain time and a officer spots them they will be asked for identification and if there's a problem that the officers will be entitled to do what they have to." Then there are the people who don't believe this curfew should be past as a law. For example Jim Lynam the 76ers' coach says "I'm not a curfew guy and I never had curfews with my kids." Over all a high percentage of people are for the law and over power the people who don't want to turn this into a law, but the people who aren't for it still have a say in the law. The media has a big part to do with this, for example the more that people see these vicious teens the more they want the law to take place. The message that the people see is to try and keep kids off the streets and when this law starts off it will be a decrease in kids in Philadelphia who will be out late at night.

The stakeholder who's trying to fix this problem is Mayor Nutter. He can't do it alone he also need the help of the citizens. Addressing the parents to make sure where their child is and what their up to. Not only is the Mayor the only person trying to make this law work but also the citizens of Philadelphia as well. For example Tyrone Werts is a Philadelphia citizen and he stood a long side the police officers in center city trying to keeps kids off of the streets. He says "I wanted to get involved in the world and make a different to the youth." The Allies that need to be on board would have to be the different citizens in Philadelphia, with out their help, probably nothing will change. Then we have the protesters. In this video a group of people shout "We need schools, not the curfew!" Another stakeholder would be the National Youth Rights Association. This is an organization that support the no curfew for youth. The one council member that didn't agree to go along with the law would prob ably have something to do with being involved with this organization.

I decided that rather than using text, I would use pictures to show my name. I used layout and size to decide that the L in my name would be bigger so that it would catch people’s attention. I kept the E, A and H in my name all the same size, which was significantly smaller than my L and actually fit into it. Because of the layout of my pictures becoming letters, I have also demonstrated unity.

3rd Blog Post: Revolving Door
Roughly 43 states have some kind of policy against revolving
doors. Most of policies are saying an official cannot switch become a lobbyist
with at least a one year period. The Obama-Biden Administration is also working
against this in their administration saying the have a two-year waiting period. Laurence Lessig is also against this
after having a lobbyist lobby for a topic a week early. Which called people to
challenge the presidential candidates to promise that they will only appoint
FCC commissioners who promise not to work for those who have regulated for at
least 5 years after their term is over. He issued that call-to-action after the
GAO found that the FCC is providing information to lobbyist about upcoming
meeting agenda. Basically FCC members were lobbying information a week before
its public announcement.
The main fighters of this issue is the
Obama-Biden Administration, and
various facets of Federal Governments. The only way I could fight something like it is to take it to
federal court because it is against many our state policy.
Practically every industry and special interest area hires
lobbyists to represent and defend their interests in Washington. However, some
industries frequently employ a special breed of lobbyist: those who previously
worked for the federal government they are tasked with lobbying.
Some of these "revolving door"
lobbyists once toiled as low-level congressional staffers or entry-level
bureaucrats.

who lobby against revolving door users could be influenced.

This is certainly not a good year for advocates of healthier school lunches. Despite all the Obama administration's efforts to fight the growing child obesity epidemic in the US, namely Michelle Obama's Let's Move! campaign, we have yet to see the kind of reform of school lunches that would bring the US closer to combating child obesity. Though I couldn't find any mention of it on their official website, Congress recently blocked new rules proposed by the USDA to make school lunches healthier. The proposed $6.8 billion bill would have mandated more fruits, green vegetables, and whole grains. It would also have limited the amount of sodium and starchy vegetables, such as potatoes, that schools could serve kids.

The bill was lobbied against by companies like ConAgra, McCain Potatoes, and Del Monte Foods, which claimed that the proposal would make school lunches too expensive (the bill would have raised the cost of school lunches by about 14 cents each) and unappetizing. Though the Congressional ruling does not prevent Philadelphia from establishing its own rules for healthier school lunches, it is a worrisome example of how willing some politicians are to put the interests of industries before the interests of American children. To gain healthier school lunches for Philadelphia children requires not only the support of Mayor Michael Nutter, but also of Pennsylvania senators Robert P. Casey, Jr., and Pat Toomey. Unfortunately, with the economy in the poor state it's in, it may be difficult to get funding for a cause that has recently been addressed--and dismissed--on a national scale.
The bill was based on recommendations by the Institute of Medicine and praised by Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack as a necessary step towards fighting child obesity and the related healthcare costs. Margo Wootan of the Center for Science in the Public Interest argues that Congress's proposed changes will prevent schools from serving a wider array of vegetables, and that "[Congress's proposed rules] are making sure that two of the biggest problems in the school lunch program, pizza and french fries, are untouched."

Soy estudiante de segunda año al Academia de Ciencia Liderazgo en Filadelfia. Segunda año con escuela secundaria es muy dificil porque la clase de matematicas. Mi nombre es Daniel Varnis. Estoy estresado y cansado. Sin embargo es viernes, por eso soy emocionado para el fin de semana. Mi cumpleaños es el diez y ocho de septiembre. Vivo en Filadelfia. El tiempo en Filadelfia es muy frío en Noviembre también increiblemente frio durante el invierno. Me gusta dormir y pasar un rato con amigos los fines de semana y cuando tengo tiempo libre. Depende del día me gusta escribir. No me gusta nada ayudar en casa o cantar. No me gusta nada increíblemente de leer. Soy bobo y loco. Soy un hablador también. ¿Y a ti? ¿Qué te interesa? In the making of my slide I learned that it didn't have to be more than one slide, not only because we were only supposed to do one slide but also because slides are short, simple and to the point. Reading the tips from Presentation Zen helped me to make my slide into what it is now. I didn't get anything from the internet I just used pictures of me and other people from off my computer. I chose the saying in the middle because it expresses how I am, mistakes don't make me depressed they just help me learn that I need to do something better and I just continue to be happy and move on with my life.
3rd Blog Post
Currently, this has not been a good year for my legislature seeing, as though there have been thousands of budgets cuts all throughout the School District of Philadelphia. Numerous teachers have lost their jobs, several programs have been cut, and many quintessential pieces of education have been lost this year. Many of the elected leaders actually support what I am lobbying; the only issue is a lack of proper funding. In the past, elected officials haven’t been conscientious of their spending, which is why we are feeling the repercussions now. Mainly, my opponents are those who represent districts where funding is plentiful and can afford to spend money wherever they see fit. Currently, officials are getting rid of things that aren’t one hundred percent essential to the growth of the district.
In my opinion, I would need to gain the support of state representative Ronald Waters and the superintendent of the School District of Philadelphia. With these two individuals supporting me, they most likely will have a large enough say over how money is spent throughout the district that it will have a meaningful impact or even change how the legislature is viewed by those it affects.
I
don’t know anyone personally that is lobbying the same topic as I am, but my
plan is to travel down to the school district building and see who has the most
influence in lobbying the same thing as I am. In my opinion, seeing as though I
am only seventeen people may not take me seriously when I first bring my idea
to someone’s attention. But as I continue to explain and show my knowledge of
this topic, I think I can get the attention of those who attend meetings to
discuss what are the negative and positive things pertaining to the well being of
the district. I think I can have some meaningful progress towards my overall
goal by the beginning of the next fall term for students.

As of Monday, January 8th, 2007, the new Philadelphia Smoking Ban is in effect. City health inspectors will be imposing $300 fines on local eating and drinking establishments in violation of the new law. January 2007, the Clean Indoor Air Worker Protection Law went into effect, banning smoking in Philadelphia’s restaurants creating a healthy environment for workers and their customers. The law also bans smoking in outdoor seating areas and patios of restaurants and bar, A 2007 Gallup poll found that 54% of Americans favored a complete ban inside of restaurants, 34% favored a ban in all hotel rooms, and 29% favored a ban inside of bars.
The Foundation for a Smoke Free America provides school-based programs to educate children about the dangers of smoking. In 1986, Patrick Reynolds became the first tobacco industry figure to turn his back on the cigarette makers. He is the grandson of the tobacco company founder R.J. Reynolds. If people are ready to change America to a smoke free America, they need to start with the children. If we educate our children now they can be the reason that we save other lives.
The people are the stakeholders in the issue. People who are smoking are not only putting themselves at risk but they are putting others at risk. Many people smoke in public places therefore causing second hand smoke. Secondhand smoke is classified as a “known human carcinogen” (cancer-causing agent) by the US Environmental Protection Agency.( http://www.epa.gov/gateway/science/air.html)
