Bahama's Election Country

Posted by Delesha Jackson in Globalization - Laufenberg on Friday, June 1, 2012 at 9:00 am
For this project our group, Tyrone, Qyidir, and De'Lesha, were told to look at a country and research how their election process went. This project was harder than expected because it was a challenge to get in contact with the people from the different countries. It may seem as though it might be easy because of the technology that we have but it wasn't for that.
After talking with our teacher we started to get moving along with the process because she gave us some ways to contact different people in the Bahamas. After sending out emails and days of waiting a response we finally got one from a teacher. She then forwarded this email to someone in the class who was willing to talk to us about the election process. We exchanged emails but we didn't really get information we were suppose to skype and interview him but things got hectic with other work. So this project wasn't really successful although we did get in contact with him we didn't really get the information.
This was a fun project but because it wasn't stressed as much as the others it wasn't really focused on. So if we could have redid this project we would've taken more time out to really get in contact with and get the information from him.

Globalization Quarter 4 BM

Posted by Delesha Jackson in Globalization - Laufenberg on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at 8:15 pm
For this quarters benchmark is was sort of tough to do because I didn't really know what to take pictures of as well as the topic I wanted to do. But then as I walked around the city I say a lot of governmental issues at hand so I thought I should talk about them. My favorite image is the construction image because that is something I think is so dumb that the government is doing right now. I feel like it could be avoided and changed in so many ways. I feel like the evidence is relavent Philadelphia because these things are happening here and right now a lot of people are looking at us because a lot s happening in our tri-state area.

DJackson Southern Europe v. Bahamas

Posted by Delesha Jackson in Globalization - Laufenberg on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at 11:20 pm
For this project I had to compare and contrast the Bahamas with Southern Europe. The Bahamas was the country I was assigned to look at the election system and Southern Europe was assigned to me for the project where we talked about the environment and economy. During the project I noticed that they had some of the same problems when it came to the environment and damages. My process for this project was just to go through all the different point systems and make sure I had enough information to summarize it, put it together and present it. I tried to present it in a way that it seemed like a comparison of each other.
The 5 point frame work was the bases for the project and it sort of helped me with putting this together. It gave me a background of what I needed to have and a check list. It was a little difficult finding all of the information for each one but once I had it everything came together. But if I could change it I think i would have a little more information and maybe a better ending to it. I tried to pull everything together at the end but I think it could have been better.

World of 100 Analysis

Posted by Delesha Jackson in Globalization - Laufenberg on Monday, February 13, 2012 at 9:10 am
Looking at these graphs its interesting what the demographics are and who "matters" in the world. If you compared my predictions with the real answers they weren't that far apart so I was pretty accurate. I was really surprised with the literacy graph because it the male statistics were better than I expected because I was always told that females did more than males so I figured they wouldn't want to learn or couldn't learn. I was sort of proud of myself because I wasn't really way off on any category.

Q2 Benchmark

Posted by Delesha Jackson in American Government - Laufenberg on Friday, January 20, 2012 at 5:45 am
De'Lesha Jackson and Jasmine Gladden "freedom of speech"

Personally I chose this topic because it was honestly the first thing that came to mind. Normally it would take me awhile to figure out what exactly I wanted to use as my topic but it was the first article of the constitution so it was sort of right there. The thing I enjoyed about this project was the fact that I didn't have to be in the video and it was fun to hear what people had to say about why freedom of speech was important to them. Although it was difficult incorporating the C-SPAN video because they didn't really connect with what we were saying but we made it work. The quotes that we used were really interesting to because not only were they true but they sort of gave me a different perspective to look at. I think if we had more views and interviewed more people the video would have been better because there would have been a better range.

Me and my partner didn't really run into problems once we got passed how to convert our video to post it and how to download the C-SPAN video it was smooth sailing. Overall, the project went pretty well I haven o complaints but like I said if I had to do it over I would have interviewed more people and maybe make the final more interesting to look at with music maybe. I learned that not everyone values their freedom of speech and not everyone knows why it's important to them it just kind of is.

Blog Post #4

Posted by Delesha Jackson in American Government - Laufenberg on Friday, December 23, 2011 at 1:00 pm
This part of our project is the communication part. Where we reach out to an official so we can get our ideas out there and try to change our topic or lobby our voice. For my communication part i chose to write a letter to an editor, my person isn't exactly an editor but I'm sure he can get the word out there and make sure what I have to say is taking into consideration. He is the City Hall bureau chief Mike Dunn of KYW radio.

       Dear Mike Dunn,
Hello, My name is De'Lesha Jackson and I am a senior at Science Leadership Academy. I am trying to represent the 50-60% of young people who are not involved in the flash mobbing groups of Philadelphia. We don't think it is fair that everyone groups us together and that we have to suffer the consequence of those who didn't know how to behave. Once Mayor Nutter realizes that not every group of young people are flash mobbing then he can show everyone else.
Mayor Nutter has made it so different age groups should have different curfew hours in certain parts of the city. But he hasn't gave any thought into the young people that just want to have fun and not hurt anyone. But he does agree that what they are doing is ridiculous. He wants equality and a safe environment for every one just like me but I feel as though his votes on this thing are not fair to every one. When reading this I hope you will have a realization of what I am saying and that you can help us to change this.
Thank you,

De'Lesha Jackson

I think this letter would be really effective, but more effective if I met him and took a group a young people who aren't involved in flash mobbing with me to help make my point known so that he can not only read but see the visual of what I am talking about. So I would try to get in contact with him to set up a meeting with him maybe even be on the radio so more people can witness this. It will be hard to get in touch with him but once I do I feel as though it would be easy after that I would just have to take the right people to help with the meeting and wonder what they will ask and be prepared to respond.

Business License Flow Chart

Posted by Delesha Jackson in American Government - Laufenberg on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 11:38 am
Link to project here.

BusinessLicense
Reflection

The task that me and my partner decided to do was obtaining a business license. Which is the paper you get that says it is legal to have a building that you run a business out of. If you do not have this license then it is impossible or illegal to make a profit out of a building. To get this license you need to file for a number of different things. But to be short and to the point you need to apply for all of the L & I approvals, these are the things you need in order to ensure that the building will be properly ran. Then you apply for a tax account number, pay the fee that you will need, and send everything in. Once you send it in you will have to wait and see if you get approved, if you don't you must start from the beginning but if you do then you can start filling out the business license form. Send that in when you are done and wait for that to get approved as well, and once it is you well get your license.

This project wasn't hard it was just very tedious and time consuming. The paperwork was hard to find but not hard to follow. The work was very straightforward but because we needed to make the information up it made it more difficult because we didn't know what everything was. But with everything no matter how difficult it was the process flowed together. I don't think I would change anything about the process on the flow chart because with out all of the steps on there you might get denied before they even look at your information. So it's better to have every little detail than to not have something it's wrong.

I think this process is so complicated because they don't want just anybody owning a business of any kind. You need to know exactly what and where everything will be, there is no time for mistakes or "going with the flow" after you get the business. It will be time for getting the money and being successful, which I agree with I just wish everything was easier to find. I think for this project there should be a hint to where the students could find the information.

Lobbying Blog Post #3

Posted by Delesha Jackson in American Government - Laufenberg on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at 6:24 pm
According to several different sources that I saw it looks as though many elected officials have agreed with it because I don't see many of them who tried to stop it. And as I look at some of the comments on the websites I see that some parents are furious and don't approve of the curfew. They should have a lot of power because from the looks of things there are many people, not just youth, who don't agree with the new curfew going on. They are saying that it is going to have more youth in jail with unnecessary things on their record then they need. People have written policies to try to stop it and yes they were about what I am addressing, and more.

I need to have some people in higher power because the mayor and the governor are all for the curfew. So either I get people who are higher then them or a lot of people who can try and persuade them. I think I have the support of parents. The mayor and governor have the most power in this situation and I'm not totally sure how to stop them, or make my point known for that matter. I think I need to move every decision maker because if I'm not mistaken the most of the voters that voted on this bill were pro instead of con.

I'm not sure who all is working on it but I do know that there are a lot of concerns. I know a couple of my classmates are doing the same topic but I'm not sure who they are. I don't see anymore dates for meetings about it or anything. From the looks of things it seems as though they don't want or care about the publics opinion anymore.

Martinez v. Ryan

Posted by Delesha Jackson on Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at 7:54 pm
My SCOTUSblog case was Martinez v. Ryan case. Some background information on this case is that Martinez is serving 2 consecutive sentences for having sex with a person under the age of 15. Martinez filed for a direct appeal with the help of a state appointed counsel. But the Arizona Supreme Court denied him.
The question is if the the prisoners have the right to argue that their lawyers were inadequate during post-conviction proceedings, does the the defendant have a right to appointed counsel during that proceeding? Or in other words he has a right to an effective assistance of post-conviction counsel in raising his ineffective-assistance-of-trial-counsel claim. Martinez knows he has this right so he is trying to get an appeal so that things may be reconsidered. Arizona is arguing the whole right to counsel or lack there of as an opinion and that recognition should have been made prior to of the fact that the counsel was ineffective. In my opinion I don't think they will rule in his favor because it seems as though their mind is already made up. But I think that they will at least consider the constitution but still decide against it and go with the state's rules. This case is still pending.

De'Lesha Jackson Food BM

Posted by Delesha Jackson in Science and Society - Best on Friday, November 11, 2011 at 9:34 pm
Ingrediants

2lbs Sweet Italian Sausage

2 cans of crushed Basil Tomato Sauce

3 Tomatos

Boxed Spaghetti

2 Onions

3 Slices of Bacon

3 Bay Leaves

1 cup of sugar

2 cups of ketchup

chili powder

dry oregeno

cumin

dry parsley

dry basil

roasted garlic

Seasoning salt

salt and pepper

olive oil

The first thing you do when cooking spaghetti is to create your sauce. Create this by pouring 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil and then slicing your 3 pieces of bacon and start to cook that. While that is cooking you cut the sausage into pieces the size that you want them to be. After the bacon is crispy but not burnt you take it out and put the sausages into the pot.  While the sausages are cooking you want to chop up the 2 onions into small pieces and cut the garlic so you can roast it. When the sausages are done take them out and put the garlic and onions into the pot and let them start to brown.

Open the cans of tomato sauce and pour them one by one into the pot. Cut the tomatoes into small pieces and then put them into the pot. Make sure the pot is on a low flame keep stirring everything so that it doesn't stick and you get the flavors in everything. Add the bay leaves, cup of sugar, 1 1/2 cup of ketchup, chili powder, cumin, dry oregano parsley and basil; add to your liking. Add the salt and pepper, bacon bits and sausages back into the sauce. Get another pot fill it with water and wait for it to boil. When it boils add enough salt to the water (the water should taste like ocean water) and then add the noodles. (the amount depends on how much sauce you are making but normally you use a half of box). When then noodles are soft enough drain them with a strainer and then add them into the sauce, make sure you stir and then eat.

Analysis

Spaghetti isn't a totally nutrition meal but it is a meal. But then again I think it's the way you make it, because of the way I make mine then might not be that nutritious. I would say that half of the ingredients are whole foods and the other half are processed. I don't really know how much my meal cost but I would say that it had to be no more than $50. I didn't have to travel far because I live near the grocery store it is about 5 block away from my house. Some of the spices were freshly grown (basil, bay leaves, etc.) I think there are some health issues that come along with eating this everyday, you could get fat because there is oil and other fatty substances in the ingredients. But I think over all it is a good meal for a family who doesn't have the highest income and for people who just want to feed many.

Self-Reflection

In this unit I have learned a lot about the food industry and how horrible it actually is. I have also learned of the importance of "fracking" and how it can help and/or harm our area.  I have looked at and examined the food industry as a whole. Taking apart the different groups and jobs, I have an idea of how the industries manage to conceal the truth; or tell the truth,  just not the whole truth. It was interesting to see everything unfold and it actually had an effect on my emotions. I was angry at the industries and they made me not want to eat their food. However, learning about all of this made me realize that I not only can't but don't want to stop buying the industries creations. My role as a consumer does not allow me to stop.  I think that is the biggest problem with our food system. They don't want us to stop so they create higher prices for the healthier food and continue to give us unhealthy food for what we can afford. I want to help change this but the thing is I can't exactly think of ideas to actually put in action.

Reflection
I chose this bill because it was said that we should do a more recent bill because it would be easier to research and it present. This bill was also one that I had followed when it was introduced so I was already familiar with it. When I was going through the proces of doing this benchmark I didn't know how to present it because the choses were so broad. I don't like broad assignments so I asked my teacher for a suggestion and she gave me one. But the suggestion she gave didn't allow me to use the videos I wanted so I had to settle for a prezi and that is how I chose my presentation style.
Some challenges I faced were that the videos I wanted couldn't go onto my laptop at one point and then they wouldn't go onto my vulvox presentation that I had planned on doing so I had to change to a prezi so that my videos could go on the presentation. If I could do this project over I would make sure my presentation and videos were working together before I actually started to assemble my final project. Also I would probably get more information, well use more words in the final so that I told that story more. The researched showed me basically what I already knew. I already knew that this bill was hard to pass because the Republicans and so many other people were against it. It just showed me exactly how many people and they much hate they had for Obama and the people for the bill and the actual bill, also it showed how much time was taken to evaluate if this bill should actually be passed. This project wasn't that hard but the presentation is always hard for me because I am not as creative as I want to be. I have ideas but when I try to put them down on paper or to use they aren't as creative as they are in my mind, or I can't get the hole idea out. So that was the hardest part. The researched went really well because their were many articles on this bill and also their were many videos and people talking about it.

Video
For my lobbying project I chose the curfew laws and since I want this to be an important thing and taking seriously I have decided to have my official be Mayor Nutter. He has enforced the laws and I figure if I can make him understand my points then he can help make everyone else understand them as well. Even though he doesn't totally directly represent me I feel as though he still can be an official of mine. Once he realizes that not every group of young adults are doing bad then he can show everyone else just like he did when he believed that something needed to be doen to stop them.
Mayor Nutter has voted that different age groups should have different curfew hours in certain parts of the city. But he hasn't gave any thought into the young adults that just want to have fun and not hurt anyone. But he does agree that what they are doing is ridiculous. He wants equality and a safe environment for every one just like me but I feel as though his votes on this thing are not fair to every one.

Lobbying Issue

Posted by Delesha Jackson in American Government - Laufenberg on Monday, October 17, 2011 at 8:20 am
My lobbying topic is sort of two things. I want to change the curfew/consequence and also I want to stop the profiling that many have on groups of young kids. I want to change the curfew because it is stopping those who are having a good time and not being a flash mob from having fun. Also it just seems unfair that there is a fee for the parents to pay if the child is caught for curfew. It isn't my mother's fault that the city is profiling me as a flash mobber just because I want to go out and have fun with my friends. And as for the profiling, not every group of kids or young adults are going to be a flash mob. Some are just out to have fun and that's simply it, but not every cop or adult wants to believe that. I chose this because when I plan events or outing with my friends I know for a fact we have to keep that in mind because we are all not over 18. My friends and I normally go out in groups and we like to have fun, although we are not a flash mob and will never be I know that because of the multitude that we come in many may think that and it is not okay.
The main supportes of my idea would be the young adults that feel the same way, and possibly the parents of the young people. But the opponents would be the police officers and others who believe that all young people are out waiting to be a flash mob. Also another opponent would be the students actually out there being a flash mob. I believe that Mayor Nutter has put certain restrictions on different age groups. As for the profiling part I am sure that there is nothing being passes to stop that. But I think something should be done because it is putting a bad name on the young people. Some of them may have brought it upon themselves but the majority doesn't have to suffer, I think somebody should make it where you just wait to see if something happens but you are still close by. Only because nothing may happen but just in case i does somebody should be there and don't always breathe down the young people's neck give them enough space so that they can have fun.

DJackson 4th Quarter

Posted by Delesha Jackson in Advanced Art - Hull on Friday, June 10, 2011 at 2:34 pm
For our last quarter we were suppose to create a piece of art work out of things you find and can use for different things. Things like duct tape, newspaper, etc. but I decided to use plastic bottles, bottle caps and cardboard. The thing that I created was a stool, because it was different. This stool isn't for sitting but just for show the  legs are made out of plastic bottles and the seat is made out of cardboard and bottle caps. I did this because in all honesty I didn't know what to do but then I was sitting on a stool and a friend suggested I make it so I became in agreement with her and did it. I came with the idea of bottles because I didn't think it was common for people to use them but common for people to use. And I didn't want to throw the caps away so I just decided to use them.
And then we were to draw a picture of a bike 3 different ways. A regular pencil drawing, a shadow drawing, and a no space drawing. This was a very difficult task because I don't think I am a good artist so I doubt my self a lot but I think my pictures came out better then expected. I drew the regular one first and then shaded the darker parts and the light dark parts. After that I drew all over it and made it seem as though the bike was the only thing showing.
I feel like this was one of my best quarters this year because I feel as though I really accomplished what I needed to and got that I shouldn't try and look for the perfection the flaws that I improved on over the year.

No repeal of the Prohibition

Posted by Delesha Jackson in American History - Laufenberg on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at 7:14 pm
To see my project click here. For this project I decided to see what the country would be like with out the repeal of the prohibition.

Reflection:

The part that I liked about this project was it's originality and how you could basically do anything you wanted. But at the same time that was what I didn't like about it. I wasn't sure how I was going to present the project and what I was going to do the project on, it was so broad. The thing I found most interesting was that my topic could have changed an election. FDR was liked for his ability to please the people and not repealing the prohibition would not have been good for him. Well depending on the person their actions impacts a lot on history. But then that does make sense because if the country gives you enough power to influence something then of course something will change history. Since people depend on the system it always will impact something historical. This project could be improved if you gave a list of things that people could do and try to have them not create so many sources. I would probably change my topic because even though it seemed a little fun and interestingly good it turned out not to be as interesting and not fun.

DJackson Musical Instrument Blog #2

Posted by Delesha Jackson in Physics - Echols on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 12:37 pm
My instruments produces sound by plucking the strings or running a bow over the different strings. The vibrations of the strings create waves and out of them sound comes out. The pitch is changing with the thickness of the string and the lengths of the strings. Also the pitch changes when you tighten the strings from the top.
I will use wood and have something to use to model the shape of my instrument. I will need wire for the strings and nails to help with the tuning of the strings. I will also need horse hair so I can use it for the bow.

For this project I have decided to make a violin. A violin is played by using your left hand to play on the strings and your right to move the bow to make the tune warmer. When you push down on a note with your left hand and move the bow with your right, you have to create an even tone and make it nice but take your time.
When playing the violin you change a note by putting you fingers on the string and moving the bow and the different strings you touch the different sounds come out.
The violin is shaped like a guitar it's just that the violin is smaller and doesn't have a hole in the middle instead it has a sort of lift in the middle where the hole would be.

a. We worked well together and everybody did their part. It was good that we did the work and got handed it in on time.
b. Even though we worked well the information we found was sort of the same so it wasn't that much information that was deep into it.
c. Try to use primary source documents to get the present point of view from that time.

De'Lesha's Art Work

Posted by Delesha Jackson in Advanced Art - Hull on Thursday, April 7, 2011 at 9:20 pm
This quarter in art class our teacher decided to have us create something new every week. It was very unusual because we never did things this way, so it was hard. We had to complete 7 drawings and an artist statement. Doing this assignment was one of the hardest in my opinion that we have ever had to do in this class, because we had a time limit for each drawing we had. There was dealing with the feeling of will i finish in time and also is my art presentable. I thought this was interesting and kind of a good thing. A good thing because it really brought out the art in the class and me and I didn't expect that at all, interesting because it showed how much faith our teacher had in us and our abilities. Some of the drawings I created I thought could've been better but that's the life of an artist.
At the very end, the last three photos are ones that to me represented spring. This was the one additional assignment that was created last minute. I decided to do this because it seemed as though it was more for me and more of my character.

For the quarter 2 project in my art class we were told to create somethings that meant something to us. I decided to draw a picture of the symbol of hope which is a dove. I wanted to draw something with hope because there are so many things and people out there that need it so bad. So while I was drawling the dove I started to doodle a little more and just decided to add more things. It was a picture that progressed from day to day.
I started with a dove and then drew a tree. A tree that represents life and bearing of things. I wanted the tree to symbolize the fact that the dove was bringing hope to the tree and the tree was going to distribute hope to different disasters or things that need it. It was a big enough tree that the dove was just going to sit in the tree and just give out hope to everyone.
Then as the picture progressed I began to draw different disasters or things that I felt need hope. I drew about 5 different things a broken heart, a hurricane, a fire, massive winds, and a crash. These things are most common in disasters and things people go through almost everyday in different environments and places. Also on the other side of the paper is a laugh now cry later mask that I chose to draw reverse. I chose to draw a cry now laugh later mask because during the bad things you cry but then when you receive hope you feel better about things and you can smile and laugh. It is going to drop behind that end of the dove and not be as bold as everything else but still seen. I chose this because I don't want it to be the main thing in the picture I just want it to be seen.
I really enjoyed drawing this because it was fun and it actually came out looking like something. I'm not the greatest artist I like to say that I can't draw but when I drew this picture it was really encouraging and it gave me hope that I might have a hidden talent.

(Benchmark) Prince Hall

For citations click here.

This project was to take a building named after someone and find the history behind the building and the person. We needed to find out why that building had the person'd name on it. It was also a project that helped our teachers get a sense of where we all were from because my school is so diverse.

For this I decided to do Prince Hall Elementary School located in the northwest region of Philadelphia. This video is a description of who Prince Hall the man was and what made people name a school after him.

Why don’t we recycle? There are many answers to this question but yet it is still a question we have. Recycling is something we should to make sure our environment is in good condition for everything that needs to be done. In art class we needed to create something that dealt with recycling for us and that meant something to us. Well for this project I decided to use shoeboxes and the tissue paper that comes in the boxes.  I made a question mark out of the tissue paper and put it on the box in a 3d view.

Not many people recycle these things. They want to but they keep their shoeboxes and then when they are tired of them they just throw them away. Sometimes intentional other times just wanting the space and not caring. So I wanted to do something that would mean something to me. I really like sneakers and I didn’t use to recycle them either. But when I realized what effect it was having on the environment I changed that.

The boxes are just something I needed so that it can hold the question mark. I made a question mark because it’s asking the question why. It’s making a silent but very loud statement trying to figure out why people don’t recycle these things. I made the question mark 3d because I wanted it to pop so that people will be able to see it. I wanted people to look at it and get that feeling of  “why?” If people do that then I will have accomplished my message.

De'Lesha Voter Blog

When I was passing out the flyers it was very interesting. Nobody really wanted to take them, I'd have them in my hand and then they would say no thank you. I feel like I kind I kind of pressured them into it because once I asked "what are you not voting?" did they take the flyer. It was just weird that it happened that way but I don't know it was still fun.
