Switzerland: Trevor Hinton and Jasmine Gladden

Posted by Trevor Hinton in Globalization - Laufenberg on Sunday, June 3, 2012 at 6:56 pm
For this project we were assigned a country to follow and keep tabs on as they went about the months leading up to their elections as well as when their elections were going on. The country me and my partner were assigned was Switzerland and their elections weren't going to be held until early March so me and my partner had plenty time to gather information. I first reached out to a man named Frank Jordans who I had come in contact with after sending him a message on twitter that asked if he would be willing to help me a project I was doing about the Switzerland election system in which he agreed to do and messaged me his email address; although many times time differences effected when I actually read the emails that we were exchanging and when he got the emails he finally responded to one I had sent him regarding how the Swiss election process had changed over time and what he had noticed since he started voting in Switzerland; unfortunately I found out that he wasn't Swiss nor did he vote there but rather a correspondent for the U.N and wasn't really able to help with my questions because he hadn't been over there long enough. I then was given the contact information of a friend of Natasha's (who also attends SLA), she informed me that her friend lives over in Switzerland and she would give me her contact info so that I could directly talk to her; unfortunately with her she was 16 and had no Switzerland nationality so she could vote over there but had been living there for 7 years and told me that she noticed since coming here that they vote constantly and by constantly she means every month and different from other countries when voting they are asked yes or no questions by the government almost like a census or poll so that government can get a clearer understanding of certain things; she also mentioned that different from other countries is you see certain parties lobbying for a certain side sometimes showing advertisements that in other countries might be considered wrong or racist because of the content. Marie which was her name was really helpful in giving me a better understanding of how Switzerland elections were so different from the U.S. and did it in such descriptive and detailed emails. Below are pictures of the different conversations as well as two ad's that Marie sent me that floated around during the year prior's election showing how they could be considered racist in other countries just by the images.

special thanks to Marie Burelli and Frank Jordans who helped with my research and knowledge of the Switzerland election system.

Option 1- Trevor Hinton

Posted by Trevor Hinton in Globalization - Laufenberg on Monday, May 28, 2012 at 11:01 am
What I found most difficult about this was trying to find a topic that would resonate with people and actually be something they wanted to read and not just another story, I tried to pick a topic that held some merit and weight so that it would be easy for me to talk about it but I also wanted to pick a topic that hit close to home for myself.

I went about finding my story by actually first thinking of things that get me thinking if I'm in the car riding past something or just hearing about something on the news, and with this I actually first got the idea when my two younger brothers approached my mom about needing money to go on a trip with their afterschool program.

I don't think this story receives much attention because most people take these programs for granted and don't really think about the intricacy that goes in to actually running these programs and maintaining them as well as the fact that a lot of these programs aren't big name or commercially known and so because of that not a lot of help can be given.

I learned that without inside help and inside knowledge to push the case and need for more things this will remain silent and unheard of to a lot of people.

Globalization

4th quarter benchmark

In and around Philadelphia it isn’t hard to spot a Boys and Girls club or sports group that consist of children from and around the neighborhood enjoying various activities and spending time with mentors and friends. You’ve seen the ads and commercials boasting of the success many famous celebrities actors and actresses have had after being in a Boys and Girls club and the urge they put on children from communities to join and be embraced by the good mentoring programs that they can give to a young person; while many good things and young people come from these programs there is a small group of afterschool programs that don’t get the necessary funding and support that programs like the Boys and Girls club which is a much larger organization receives and the problem arises when you are no longer able to accept children into these programs and their parents still wish to have them doing something proactive after school has been dismissed. A lot of these programs are run out of a child’s school as a way to keep them off the streets but when funding is an issue and program directors can’t get enough of something to keep the program going it can cause the children to lose interest or worse for the whole program to be suspended. There are a lot of things that go into running a afterschool program such as planning of any trips, snacks for the children, planning of activities and any supplies that, something as simple as an afterschool program that allows children to just play sports and hangout with friends for as long as they can so that they are occupied isn’t as hard to manage however when trying to coordinate and plan things outside of sports or arts and crafts it becomes a bigger issue of how to gather everything that is needed in a timely matter so that things can be done properly. My two brothers were in a afterschool program that was run out of there school that taught inner city kids going to public schools how to wrestle and stay off the streets and while the program was a great success and drew many kids in when it came for them to go to different competitions to compete and go to places like the University of Penn to practice because of the lack of funding that was able to be provided from the school a lot of things had to come from willing parents i.e. rides to competitions (sometimes as far as Lehigh), snacks, and in some instances putting down a certain monetary amount so they would be able to rent a bus or van for the day. The bigger question that arises from this is what can be done to keep programs like these running and up if they don’t have the support of a school district or other community programs; if the idea is to keep kids safe and off of the streets getting into things that could harm them shouldn’t more be put on any and everyone involved to have a bigger plan in place to keep things like this open and running as long as possible, what grants can be given what donations can be made to these smaller programs, these are questions that have yet to be given a concrete answer to aid this cause.

5-Point Framework: Switzerland vs. Portugal

Posted by Trevor Hinton in Globalization - Laufenberg on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at 10:24 pm
For my 5-point framework I decided to look at both Switzerland and Portugal and what I found was very interesting to me. I looked at the overall sustainability of each country as well as things like environmental damage, climate changes, international relations and hostile neighbors; when looking at each I noticed that Portugal had a better track record and overall points system then Switzerland particularly in the field of how they dealt with environmental damage because of how they handled things like soil erosions, acid rain and increases in gas emissions and I thought overall the country showed a better grasp and handle on each issue that they came in contact with. When looking at Switzerland I thought it was interesting how even with the problems that they had they really didn't show much improvement in how they fixed each or went about fixing the problem but rather just seemed to brush over the things. I found this project to be very interesting and full of different things that I took away about how to look at countries differently in terms of sustainability and I also found this project interesting when it actually came time to dig deeper and look at how long a country could in fact survive on the system that they already have in place. If I were to do this project again I would probably change the amount of time that we had and maybe change the way I presented it.

World Of 100

Posted by Trevor Hinton in Globalization - Laufenberg on Friday, February 10, 2012 at 8:08 am
The Graphs:
World Language- If you look at this graph you can see that not a lot of languages went over the 20 mark other than the other category which I think is interesting because some of these languages are common and to think that the "other" category was higher brings forth the question what in fact are those languages?; I thought it was also interesting that the majority of my classmates had the same idea when it came to looking at the world and what languages they thought would be most frequent.

World Geography- With this graph I noticed that the numbers for myself, the class and the correct answers seemed to favor North America which to me made sense because a lot of other nationalities come over from time to time to America to start over and so the fact that these numbers are higher than other places around the world doesn't really surprise me as much.

World Age- This graph shocked me just a bit because I would assume that because babies are always being born that there would be more infants in the world but then I looked at different variables that could make it so that teens to 64 year olds were a lot higher in numbers.

Which categories were you most accurate? inaccurate? Explain why you think that was the case.

I really wasn't that accurate in much of anything with the categories because I really didn't put much thought into the idea of it being the "world" and just put thought into ideas about the world that I knew without deeper knowledge.

Which of the real/correct answers shocked you the most? Explain.

The answer that shocked me the most was the one found in language and where it said other languages would be used more than other common languages like Chinese and English or even French, I thought that was interesting because that to me showed the diversity of language throughout.

If you were way off course in your predictions, explain why it is that you feel that happened. If you were spot on, explain why you think that happened.

I believe that I was off course in my predictions because I assumed that what I looked at the world as and how I related with the world by which what I've been told would always be correct and not wrong as well as what I had read to be correct. Even when I made a slight change I saw that I was still off because it still followed the ideas and assumption of things that I was told.

Illegal Domestic Spying: Zillah and Trevor

Posted by Trevor Hinton in American Government - Laufenberg on Sunday, January 22, 2012 at 12:26 pm

This is a small project that was done surrounding the issue of illegal domestic spying and what exactly caused the NSA (National Security Agency) to go from looking and tapping into calls coming from foreign countries to being able and going around tapping into any cellular device even emails on occasion looking for a "domestic threat". This is meant to give a brief inside into a specific piece of a bigger idea surrounding the privacy of the American People; this also goes against the 4th amendment which states that without a warrant appointed by a three-judge court a search a seizure can't be performed.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0v1OuQirMQ&context=C3e65be8ADOEgsToPDskLn2XijvV__y1uKIO46rzHx

Why did you choose this topic?:

Me and my partner chose this project because not only did it seem interesting but it was something that we as young adults could relate to because of our involvement in the electronic community and how we used phones on the daily basis and didn't think something like this could happen.

What did you like about this project? What was most challenging?

I liked how as we went through everything we learned and gathered more information regarding what exactly this was dealing with and that it was a much bigger issue than just the idea that we were looking at, however at the same time it was very challenging when looking for the exact points and information we could use so that it would be relevant to what we were trying to convey in our video.

Describe the most interesting fact or event that you investigated.

The most interesting fact that we found was during one of the court cases the judge in the case went back to square one with one of the heads of the NSA asking him to briefly talk about what it was this was intended to do and in doing so never really denied the fact that they never asked for a warrant to be issued to tap into phones that weren't foreign

How could this project be improved?

I think that this project could be improved by maybe making the video a little longer as well as making it so that there was more detail in the video for the audience to get more out of it as a whole.

Where did you run into trouble with the project?

We ran into trouble when looking at where exactly different points and clips should be placed because we had so many to use and so many that went with each other that it was hard at times to actually pick out which clip would actually convey a message.

What went well with this project?

I think the projects main goal and the ideas found in the video were some things that went well for this project as well as the concepts for the video

If you had it to do over, what would you change about your decisions or your process?

I would probably change just the process by which we went about looking for things as well as what exactly we were going to use to make the project an overall success.

What did you learn?

I learned about how certain amendments can be skewed and changed around to fit something in particular but I also learned about how the government has complete power to do whatever it is they see fit to do.

The way that I thought about communicating with my organization and legislation members is to first contact them by phone and explain what it is i'm trying to do and then from there contact the organization directly and ask them what different things they are doing not just overall but in the city of Philadelphia. I have also decided a good way to get my point across is to post things on social media sites that have connections with the organization like Twitter and Facebook and use these mediums to allow people a chance to hear my message and what it is I would like to see changed through my work, an example of a post would look something like this

"Childhood obesity can lead to many lifelong illnesses like diabetes and heart disease but when so many schools are taking after school sports programs out of schools because of funding it only leaves kids with inadequate freedom to enjoy themselves and have fun. Through the play60 movement and the initiative to get children to play at least 60 minutes a day we can have this changed and reversed for the better"

This is a example of what one social media site post might look like, keeping in mind that I want to have the organization play60 named so that people can reference and see exactly what it is that they are doing.

Caraco vs. Novo Nordisk

Posted by Trevor Hinton in American Government - Laufenberg on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at 11:18 am
Issue: Whether a generic drug manufacturer may sue the company that produces the brand-name version of the drug to require it to correct information filed with the Food and Drug Administration, information that is relevant to the agency's decision whether to approve the generic version of the drug.

Caraco is a pharmaceutical laboratory who's main job is to create affordable medication for patients

Novo Nordisk is a healthcare company and worldwide leader in diabetes care and medication

The case which revolves around Caraco  diabetes drug repaglinide, Caraco certified that its' drug label wouldn't conflict with respondent novo nordisk repaglinide-metformin use combination

The case is whether a patented drug that is filed by the FDA can be sued by the generic maker of that similar drug for not given correct information regarding the exact drug and everything included in it. (chemical mixtures etc.)

After school programs are being shut down and closed because of budget cuts to schools and school districts around the country forcing children to seclude themselves from active play and stay inside. There have been many movements around the country to reverse this trend of physical play being boring and something of the past with help from programs like play60 which is involved with the NFL and has been directly been given help by Michele Obama and Jill Biden who have made progress in getting more and more school districts across the country involved in getting these programs back up and running so that more and more children can have access to outdoor spaces and places to play rather than being inside; this also correlates to mrs. Obamas idea of having a healthier America and a America without obesity

My issue still stays at the idea of sports and after school programs in general being cut to save money for the school and how these programs are crucial in getting and keeping kids active but also keeping children from getting in trouble outside of school. At this point I would have to directly speak with people involved in programs like play60 and other organizations that are around and trying to get these programs back but also trying to address the issue of children being active and staying active. I wanted to directly focus on schools in communities where there isn't much happening outside or around the school because in more developed neighborhoods you don't see these programs being cut because the community and the area is doing fine itself particularly the school system but by looking at school systems in lets say small communities or Philadelphia for example because of all the budget cuts we can see and address the problem directly.

My Cooked Meal: Cinnamon Strousel

Posted by Trevor Hinton in Science and Society - Best on Monday, November 14, 2011 at 5:46 pm
My famous Cinnamon Strousel

1- 8x4 pan (greased)

2- eggs

1- cup of water

1/3 cup vegetable oil

1/2 cup of flour and milk

1 box of regular/plain muffin mix

grease bottom and sides of pan evenly and set aside, mix together ingredients with box of muffin mix until all ingredients and products are combined. Add cinnamon into the mixer as it is still blending together; heat oven to 350 degrees and place pan into the oven leave it in the oven for 25-40 minutes take out and let cool

Analysis:

This meal was fairly easy to make because all that was really needed to make this was muffin mix but you could even use a cake batter to make the mix a lot thicker. I decided to make this meal or desert because I thought of something being able to coincide with the rest of the dishes being created as well as the overall idea of the dish being something that people would enjoy to eat. I believe that this dish is split down the middle in terms of ingredients being both whole and processed because some things like the muffin mix is a processed food ingredient because you don't find anything other than wheat in nature and so with that you have something being processed but as far as the cinnamon, the flour, the wheat all of those things are whole and unfiltered or not touched or messed with chemically. I feel as though overall this dish came out rather well and I did a good job in creating the dish and noticed that a lot of people enjoyed eating it as well as returning to get seconds, and so with that being said I believe this was a successful benchmark for me.

Reflection:
In this unit I learned about different origins of food and why food is looked at as both helpful for the world population but also very harmful and what exact ways it's been harmful to the world, I also learned about about different organizations and what exactly they are doing when it comes to looking at how food is made and what we're doing as humans when it comes to food consumption. When I look at what my role is in the larger food system I look at how I have an impact on not just what I eat but also what I do when it comes to purchasing food and how I can change that and look to purchase foods that might be organic or even all vegan foods but I also look at how I help move along the progression of food production and food sales by how many times I might purchase a certain product or by how many times I go to a fast food restaurant instead of staying in and eating. I feel as though the biggest problems with our food system is that we try to hard to speed up the process of certain things so that we can get more profit out of it but in fact we're doing the opposite and not only hurting the animals in the process by feeding them food that they aren't used to eating and in some instances not even supposed to be eating but we're also hurting humans by what then happens from animals and food being treated the wrong way ie. salmonila outbreaks and deaths etc, I also believe that big name companies are looking at the consumption of food as just something to get them money without really looking at the consequences of it all and what it can lead to. Some changes I could make to my food choices would probably be not to eat so much food that's heavy in fat or sodium and try to find alternatives and to also look and understand what it is I might be eating better so that I can control how much of it I eat or even decide whether thats a good choice to eat from the start, and then by me doing this and changing my eating habits people around me might start to do the same.

Food Rules Slide Picture:

The idea of the food rule slide came from looking at different weird but also unique foods and the thought that "would you eat something that you didn't really know what it was supposed to be"

No Child Left Behind

Posted by Trevor Hinton in American Government - Laufenberg on Friday, November 4, 2011 at 9:26 pm
This is my History Benchmark that I did about the bill "No Child Left Behind"

Click image to begin PDF styled keynote presentation

Reflection:

Explain your decision making for choosing the bill:
I decided to do this bill because I knew of the initial reasons as to why it passed through congress and why it became a bill however I never really understood the background information of it all and who was exactly involved in the overall steps and process of making it a bill.

Why did you choose the particular presentation format?
I chose to do this format because it made since when looking at ways to present it but it also made sense when trying to convey a small story to present. I decided to go keynote because I knew I could get the most out of presenting and making my points known

What challenges did you overcome in completing the project?
Some challenges that I had to overcome when completing this was finding ways to actually incorporate all the information that I had actually gathered as well as piecing everything together in something that wouldn't bore people or lose their interest in the project.

How would you do the project differently if you had to do it over again?
If I were to do this project over again I would probably create either a imovie or prezi although I'm not really familiar with how to make a prezi but I feel as though with using those I'd be able to create something in which people could become more engaged with and actually receive a clearer message overall.

What did the research and investigation tell you about the creation process... from idea to bill to law?
What the research actually told me was that it was actually a clear cut idea to begin with however when it came to actually figuring out how to make this work together and make everything flow so that in the longrun it wouldn't confuse not only teachers but school officials wouldn't be confused it showed that this idea that was going to become a bill was a little harder than first thought of. I found it interesting that I didn't read of things being taken back or parts of this idea in it's early stages being rescinded.

Was the process easier or harder than you imagined based on your particular bill/law research?
The process was actually harder than first imagined because it took time for me to actually decide on which bill I wanted to do and then from there the steps to find credible information and what made sense to portray the information.

People Who would represent me:

City Council

Mayor Nutter

Play60

Councilmen Curtis Jones

Michael Decker

I would need to get in contact with each individual person or program to find out more information specifically with why after school sport programs are failing and why Philadelphia after school sport programs are failing and what needs to be done to get more of these programs and what these officials are doing to get bills passed and other things passed to bring these necessary programs back. I will also try to go to different sites that have been shutdown and talk to those people about what can be done; I will also talk with students and kids that have lost these sports programs and how they feel about losing them as well.

Lobbying Idea

Posted by Trevor Hinton in American Government - Laufenberg on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at 1:39 pm
In America today you hardly see any after school sports programs for kids to be involved in and you see more and more children getting into bad acts because of the lack of these programs, you also see more and more children becoming obese because of these programs being taken out of schools. For my lobbying project I will explore ways to get these programs back into schools and how to lower the oncoming epidemic of childhood obesity in america; I will look closely at programs like play60 which encourages kids to get out and play for an hour a day by incorporating the idea with professional athletes, I will also look at what city officials in Philadelphia are doing to change this problem. In Philadelphia because of budget cuts a lot of these programs were cut back and some being taken away permanently because expenses were just to great to try and uphold over the course of a few years, I believe that if we also tackle the issue with how much money schools are actually given but how much schools can actually take out to use on sports year round and by combining these things and fixing them we can fix the problems of budget issues surrounding after school sport programs as well as sports programs being cut all together.

I believe that by bringing these things back into schools across America we will not only see a great drop in childhood obesity but we will see a greater drop in illegal activities as well as an increase in students in school as well as students.

Caraco v. Novo Nordisk

Posted by Trevor Hinton in American Government - Laufenberg on Friday, October 14, 2011 at 9:02 am
The Case I was giving was Caraco vs. Novo Nordisk
which will be argued December 5, 20ll
Dockett Number: 10-844

Caraco v. Novo Nordisk:

Summarization- basically the argument stems from whether or not a generic drug making company can sue for having another company for making the name brand version of that exact drug without the prior knowledge of the FDA.

Constitutional issue: Commerce clause; which says that "no person shall introduce or deliver for introduction into interstate commerce any new drug unless with an approval.

From the Scotus Blog:

Whether a generic drug manufacturer may sue the company that produces the brand-name version of the drug to require it to correct information filed with the Food and Drug Administration, information that is relevant to the agency's decision whether to approve the generic version of the drug.

With this case it looks at whether states can legally sell drugs under a different name in a different state without The Food and Drug Administration knowing anything about the effects of granting the state the right to sell the product in pharmacy stores or over the counter.

Kennedy Family Succession P.O.D.

Posted by Trevor Hinton in American History - Laufenberg on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at 9:37 pm

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVk6c6PBhTw

I really liked doing research on the kennedy family and although we couldn't rewrite the deaths of both John and Robert I really liked taking the time to find out more about the family and looking at what made them so powerful. What made this project rather challenging for me was looking up and finding sources that would actually make since but also taking each and every individual date and rewriting them to fit the change of history I was working with; I noticed that when I changed the date of when one person went home it then had to effect the rest in somewhat of a dominio effect throughout the process. The most interesting fact that I found out was about Robert Kennedy and how he actually pressured John Kennedy after the "Bay Of Pigs" to send a some group of people again to kill Fidel Castro however the plan failed when the C.I.A picked up on the plans which to me were rather interesting because Robert Kennedy didn't come off as direct or someone to want they death of people.

The impact of individuals change history records by flipping and changing dramatically what we view as something one man is capable of doing in the sense that if someone were to single-handedly stop a powerful dictatorship in another country they would be looked at as a hero and someone who needs to be coveted with awards and from there history records talk and praise this one person for what they have done. However systemic changes effect history records because they are looked at as something that took time and a group and so they change the way we look at the group aspect of things and how we go about doing things in the future with peers and groups. One decision I think can be very influential because if you look at the issue with the U.S. and the Cuba issue I think the decision to go in and try to stop Fidel Castro changed quickly how we did things and what information we used because we learned from that that everything we thought we knew we didn't . I feel like this project could be improved by giving more time because I feel that because of other projects and things that we needed to turn in and do not only effected how much overall effort was put into the project but rushed it overall, I also feel that this project could be improved by allowing every point from history to be explored ie. the kennedy assassinations of the assassination of Martin Luther King because I think not allowing those to be done limited us to something that although is a piece from history a piece that would have been interesting to see how someone took that point of "if kennedy survived the gunshot" and what would have been different. If we could do this project over I would definitely change the P.O.D. that I chose just because although it is very interesting I feel that it took a lot of time to get exact dates to match.

Musical Instrument: Trevor Hinton

Posted by Trevor Hinton in Physics - Echols on Friday, May 20, 2011 at 8:54 am
I am really interested in making a guitar for this musical project because I feel I'd be able to put something good together. A guitar is played by strumming strings that are attached to tuners at the top of the guitar or neck as it is called; the player strums the strings in different variations and cords to create a tune and the shape of the guitar is oblong and fat at the base or hollowed piece and very narrow and skinny as it reaches the top with this being said this makes me think that when creating my guitar that I can create and change sound by changing the length of the tuning as well as changing the shape at the base. Some connections that can be made about waves and what I know about guitars is that the waves bounce out as it hits and meets the hollow center of the guitar where sound seems to stay and reverberate. The waves that are made from strumming on the strings on a guitar can be related to when you shake a slinky back and forth and it takes a while to slow down in the sense that when you strum the string it continues to carry out the sound for awhile.

3rd Quarter Art

Posted by Trevor Hinton in Advanced Art - Hull on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at 9:08 am
For our 3rd quarter art class we were given a different art project each week, consisting of projects surrounding our hands, still life,self-portraits, and an individual art piece that we chose ourselves. I feel as thought I did exceptionally well with this and was able to complete the projects in a timely manner that allowed me time to edit them and add things to them where needed, but I also feel as though I could have done better when it came to getting the pieces and parts ie. structuring and timing of the overall piece better because at times I was lazy in finishing a piece because of being tired or just getting frustrated with my picture at the time. I really like the pictures that I completed because I feel as though overall they show how I grew as a artist over the course of 3 quarters so far and from that my 4th quarter will reflect an even better artist. The different things that I completed

17-22 8x11” pencil drawing - your hand

24-28 8x11” pencil drawing - self portrait
31-4 24x36” charcoal drawing - self portrait
 drawing - clear bottle

Censorship In Music

Posted by Trevor Hinton in American History - Laufenberg on Monday, March 7, 2011 at 5:08 pm

For our National History Day Project we had to choose a topic of interest and write a paper about it. For mine I chose to do the censoring of words in music and from where it began until now how it has changed. The link listed above is for my website that I created to explain the history of Censorship and why it's important but also looked at with different opinions by many people

Different

Posted by Trevor Hinton in Advanced Art - Hull on Friday, January 14, 2011 at 11:53 am
For this quarter benchmark I decided to do something different based off of different patterns and designs I found around art. I call my art different because I look at it as a symbol for things people don't usually think about and what I think about when I'm bored, I see my art as almost a journey through someones mind and most of the inspiration for this came from me being interested in patterns found in mazes and different pieces or art like graffiti. It took over 5 hours for me to complete the final piece because of things like different elements and characters that I thought would be nice to add into the piece but didn't fit into the piece of art paper that I had; each and every part of my art has some sort of story starting with the tree at the very bottom. The tree represents life and higher learning from which the branches are moving out to share and spread what has been given, I thought about how people in families receive so many things from family members that those things are used to better ourselves. From there I drew flames colored and outlined in blue instead of the regular red to show a calming feel over the distribution of feelings we feel as human beings it's interesting because at the very corner of the flames that I didn't notice before is that there is what appears to be an eye which is very cool to me because as you move up the piece it appears that the eye is disappearing from the face and becoming engulfed in more mazes and puzzles almost saying that no one person can be defined as just a look in the eye. On the right side one thing that I am proud of is the angel wing because although I decided to do just one it shows a sense of freedom through the whole piece because of the clutter and confusion of the mazes of the patterns you still feel a sense of freedom and movement this is a piece of my art that made me feel as though this piece was very special to me because it flowed well with the "inner distraction" and made the piece overall interesting to look at. I really feel that my second quarter artwork was very well put together and would love to continue something like this through the third quarter.

Trevor Hinton: Memorial Hall History

Posted by Trevor Hinton in American History - Laufenberg on Monday, November 15, 2010 at 8:53 pm

This is a project that we had to complete for our United States history class as well as our English class. My project was about Memorial hall in fairmount park and how it came to be known as Memorial hall and exactly the impact it had on the community.

This is the link for all of my bibliographies

Lightbulb to Candle: Trevor Hinton's recycled art project

Posted by Trevor Hinton in Advanced Art - Hull on Sunday, November 7, 2010 at 1:30 pm
Hello my name is Trevor Hinton and I am a junior at Science Leadership Academy, our quarter one art benchmark was to take something we find and use everyday and transform it into recycled art.

For my recycled art project I decided to take a old lightbulb and transform it into a usable candle. The inspiration for this came about when I was searching the internet for ideas and came across an interesting picture of a glossed out lightbulb with a candle light coming out of the bottom in which I then began to search around to find instructions as to how I could complete this myself. The materials that were needed were old lightbulbs, a screw driver, needle nose pliers, gloves for safety and a knife. I wanted to make my lightbulb candle look a lot different from the one that was displayed on the website so I tried looking for different color candle waxes and illuminates  so that when the candle was ignited it gave off a different color other than the standard orange flame. When I began this project what seemed like a fairly easy task of pulling apart the bottom of a lightbulb soon turned into a big mess because of broken glass, filaments going missing, wax being poured into wrong ends etc. etc. However I did learn from this a better understanding of not only how candles work on the inside but also how artist carefully need to plan out each step when creating a work of art from something else, I found myself many nights wondering if this project would actually even come out like a lightbulb and if in fact it would even work.

Although I was unable to fully finish the project and light my candle, I was able to gain valuable experience from this and that when working with recycled items it brings about a certain joy knowing that what your goals are for the piece and what you are aiming to complete may be able to be used on a daily basis and that what you are working with didn't end up in a landfill or someones trashcan. I really like that this project was giving to us and hope that we can continue to complete projects like this in the future.

Vote 2010

Posted by Trevor Hinton in American History - Laufenberg on Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at 11:07 pm
On Tuesday November 2nd me and my fellow classmate Tyrone Kidd headed down to Rittenhouse Square, Suburban Station and Greenfield School where we handed out flyers encouraging people to vote and also conducted an interview. When we first got down to Rittenhouse we found that not a lot of people traveled through the park and the very few people that did come through there had either already come from voting or just didn't want to bothered at the time. When we decided to then walk down to Suburban Station the number of people that we encountered was great, but even here we found that some people were either rushing to work after voting or didn't want to be bothered. What I found interesting was that some people that we handed flyers to stopped to look at it before going about their day and also were interested to see to students just as compelled to get people to vote as they may have been to get them to vote. When we came from passing out all the flyers we headed to the Greenfield School on 22nd and Chestnut where we interviewed a woman who had worked at the polls right after voting herself. The questions we asked were 1) What motivated you to come out and vote? 2)Where have you encountered the highest amount of ad campaigning? 3) What changes do you hope to see in Philadelphia as a result in this election? 4) Do you vote in every election? 5)Do you know why we vote on Tuesdays?. Both the audio from the interview and video from our expedition today can be found on the links below.
