Starks Incorporated - Senior Capstone - Chelsea Starks

Posted by Chelsea Starks in Capstone - VanKouwenberg on Friday, May 25, 2012 at 10:00 am

The topic that I did for my capstone is Web Development. This project will enabled me to not only prepare a digital portfolio for my intended major in college but also give me work experience by designing multiple websites for several organizations and I produced a career related project in order to achieve my goal.

This process has been a long journey that started well before this year but I’m very proud I was able to create such a masterpiece and share it with everyone. The name of my company is called Starks Incorporated; it is a web design company specializing in WordPress, Flash, and multimedia as well as social networking. Over the past year I have been able to build a small list of clientele, which include different non-profit organizations as well as privately owned businesses as well.

Early in 2011, I was informed about a non-profit in need of a digital makeover and I was chosen to redesign the site. The end result was great and I enjoyed making it. Other non-profits include SLA’s very own RoughCut Productions, Global Youth United, MpazaK, and Secret.org. I learned a lot more about web design in terms of different languages, improved my knowledge of different applications such as Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator, and read really interesting reference books for my work.

Overall I had a great time designing and creating this project and if I could do it all over again I would get the word out maybe a little more about my company but for the most part I’d keep things the same.

Posted by Chelsea Starks in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 9:08 pm

Me llamo Pedro Machuca.

Q2 Benchmark - Freedom of Religion

Posted by Chelsea Starks in American Government - Laufenberg on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 5:02 pm
This was LaMaya's, Tyler's, & my project for our Q2 Benchmark. The provision we decided to focus on was the freedom of religion in the First Amendment of the Constitution. Click to watch the video below.
TLC - Freedom of Religion
Benchmark Reflection:

  • Why did you choose this topic?
My group members and I wanted to choose a topic that was personal to us, original in such a way that it was not cliché and share our opinions and ideas openly on.
  • What did you like about this project? What was most challenging?
I liked that we didn't necessarily have to stay in one section of the Constitution, we were able to choose what part in the Constitution we wanted to. I found myself most successful being able to speak freely on my ideas and opinions on this topic as did my teammates. The most challenging thing though, in this project was figuring out how to fit the C-SPAN footage in, in such a way that everything transitioned smoothly.

  • Describe the most interesting fact or event that you investigated.
The most interesting fact that I have investigated was how before the Constitution there was quite a bit of persecution for people's beliefs but the same people who came to this country because they were being persecuted in Europe for their religion, did the same thing once they got here. It seems to me that history repeats itself if we let it without a doubt.

  • How could this project be improved?
I think we could have have switched the camera maybe more than what we did. I also think this could have been improved by ways of having clearer C-SPAN footage, but that was just poor video quality on their part.
  • Where did you run into trouble with the project?
We ran into trouble when trying to convert the video into an FLV file but finally my computer cooperated with me and I was able to upload the video.

  • What went well with this project?
My group members and I worked really well with this project everyone was able to agree on one thing and really got what we needed to do done. The music, the transitions and the overall look of this project was great and I am proud of the finished product.

  • If you had it to do over, what would you change about your decisions or your process?
If I had to do this process over again, I would try to record everyone's parts in the same place to keep some type of constant there or at least the background is close to what the other person has. Also I would have added in a skit or something showing what it would be like without that provision in the Constitution.

  • What did you learn?
I learned just how necessary it is to have the freedom of religion and how strongly some feel about it in terms of them having an opposition to people believing differently than they do. I also learned more about my team members and how they feel about religion, I actually did not know that they sort of felt the same as I do about having the freedom of religion.

Above the Influence by Chelsea Starks

Posted by Chelsea Starks in Reading, Writing, and Rising Up - Rami on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 8:21 am
What is your product? What is your message?

My product is an Above the Influence commercial. The message I am conveying to my audience is don't drink and drive.

Who is your intended audience?

My intended audience are young adults between the ages of 21 and 30

Why do you think this is an effective way to reach your audience?

I think this is an efective way to reach my audience because in that age group most listen to the radio and don't really change the station when a commercial comes on. It's easier to reach this target audience that way.

If you were to to do this again, what would you change about your BM?

I think I would make the arguments stronger in such a way it stays realistic but there's more emphasis on the point I'm trying to get across. Overall though I'm proud of my finished product. :)

Amor, Paz, Y Felicidad; La 62nd Y La Calle de Market

Posted by Chelsea Starks in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Friday, January 13, 2012 at 6:09 am

Hola, me llamo Chelsea Starks y mi mural llamado “Amor, Paz,Y Felicidad”.

Lobbying Issue: Funding for Philly Youth Poetry Movement (Phase Four)

Posted by Chelsea Starks in American Government - Laufenberg on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at 9:52 am
For my lobbying project, I made a petition that I’ve been circulating on Tumblr as well as sending an email to the mayor’s office to request he and city council allot more funding to PYPM because it is a very influential, innovative program that allows young people to express themselves in such a constructive and creative way that it also helps promote literacy improvement as well as building better social skills. My primary plan is the email I plan to send shown below,  which basically explains why this is something that should be acted upon as well as getting people from Philadelphia to sign this e-petition.

To Whom This May Concern,
Hello, my name is Chelsea Starks and I am a senior at Science Leadership Academy. I have been working on a lobbying project in my American Government class to help me learn more about how the legislative system works. For my lobbying project I chose to lobby aiding the non-profit organization Philly Youth Poetry Movement (P.Y.P.M) which promotes youth to use power of their voice through spoken word and literary expression. PYPM is more than just a group of poets rhyming together, it’s like a family. No mater how long you’ve been there 6 months or 6 minutes, they will show you love regardless and will make you feel welcome. This organization was originally founded in 2006 by Greg Corbin, and really gives at-risk youths aged 13-19 a safe environment to express themselves, explore and find their identity as well as advocating for themselves in such a way that is creative but building better social skills at the same token. A program like this has been an inspiration to many including myself. My first time being at a workshop was very intriguing and I was interested to come back again and get to know everyone. The environment overall had so much love there even though they didn’t know me and I felt accepted by these people whom I didn’t even know. Programs like these need to exist around the city, but until the city can fund all of those projects, starting off with PYPM will help start it. This organization has been doing very well and has gained support of many politicians holding office in the city but now it’s calling on it’s community, i.e the city to help them continue to grow and flourish. With this funding this organization could be so much more, we could finally get a main building and hold workshops there, have youth night as well as open mic there as well. But that also cuts down on the unintentional  segregation that sometimes happens when young people can’t go as far as others in terms of traveling outside the city. By having one building it will actually put some parents at ease because that allows them to know this limits how far some kids are traveling and are in one specific place. PYPM is an inspirational, innovative, uplifting organization committed to helping the city’s youth. So in closing, I hope that you will take this into consideration and help this organization prosper. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Chelsea Starks

cstarks@scienceleadership.org

Basically what I’ve done so far I can’t even begin to believe I’ve done honestly. I didn’t think I could get this far on my own nor did I really think I could make a true difference in the system of politics. I always thought most of them really didn’t care about what the young people had to say as a lot of politicians don’t but those whom I am working with to get PYPM more funding are definitely in favor of the young people in the city and really want us to be all we can be. I think that once the issue of money is settled for Philly, this will be a great investment because we are investing in our future via the young people that participate in these programs. This only the beginning of something that could change this city for the better. We already have the “Unlitter Us” campaign to help keep the city clean and it seems to have something of an impact. With proper funding I believe this could really help put the city’s youth into a better place as well as the city itself.

Right now I could use help with the letter before I send it off because I want to make sure this makes sense and is professional enough. Please feel free to leave constructive criticism below.

Posted by Chelsea Starks in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Monday, December 19, 2011 at 9:56 am

FAFSA

FAFSA
FAFSA
FAFSA (1)
FAFSA (1)
  • Here is the link to our flowchart: Click here

The bureaucratic task that my group and I selected was filling out FAFSA forms for college. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is basically an essential part of the college process because it allows colleges to see whether or not you are eligible for financial aid, grants, and/or work study programs to help pay for college.

Essentially the overall process for this bureaucratic task is self explanatory and it really involves a lot of paperwork that you should already have before you start the process such as your driver's license, your social security number, and tax records from the previous year. You basically answer all questions that apply to you and once you finish, if you are older than indicated on the form, you have to sign your name and agree that what you put on that form is completely accurate. If you are under the age depicted on the form, then you have to have your parents fill out their information and both of you sign together indicating everything on the form is completely accurate.

The paperwork was really easy, it was pretty self explanatory and straightforward as I stated earlier and all you needed to do was have your information ready, read the directions, and answer the questions as follows.

I don't think I would change anything about this process because overall it's very easy to do, nothing really complicated, nothing overwhelming, all you need is your paperwork and you're good to go.

I think that some of the other systems have become so complicated because it sort of requires it because people try to get over on the system all the time and the harder you make that system, the harder it is to try to play the system. This in particular is set at the level it is to make this part of college process as painless as possible given there are other things people have going on, especially seniors in high school.

Overall this was a particularly great project to have participated in and I really learned a lot from this experience. I know now how to fill these types of forms out with no problem and feel really accomplished now that I have been able to get practice.

The status of my legislature seems to be in a "good" year because majority of my representatives (local) support PYPM so as a whole my lobbying issue seems to be in good standing. A policy has not yet been written for this issue because of other pressing issues such as the Occupy Philly Movement. Because in recent weeks, this movement has kind of taken over on the list of priorities and the city is trying to deal with it as best as they can non-violently and legally. As you can see in the photos below, the city has it's hands tied with this here Occupy Philadelphia.

The stakeholders in this issue right now  are Mayor Nutter and the city council members. The allies I have on board are Mayor Nutter and the city council members. Basically right now everything is kind of a waiting game because of all of the unrest so once that subsides and they handle the problem or come to a compromise with the protesters I can move forward.

The founder of PYPM, Greg Corbin, is helping me with this issue because he really wants PYPM to be more of a national maybe one day even global change but before thinking big we have to think small. We want to take more misguided youths off the street and allow them to express themselves in a more creative and productive manner rather than terrorizing random people just for the fun of it. The dates we have to look out for are the next city council meetings pretty much and see when the next session is.

SCOTUS Case: Gonzales v. Thaler

Posted by Chelsea Starks in American Government - Laufenberg on Monday, November 14, 2011 at 5:08 am
    1. Constitutional Question
      -  Was there jurisdiction to issue a certificate of appealability under 28 U.S.C. § 2253(c) and to adjudicate Gonzalez's appeal?

      - Did the application for a writ of habeas corpus run out of time under 28 U.S.C. § 2244(d)(1) due to the date on which the judgment became final by the conclusion of direct review?

    2. Facts of the Case
      - Gonzalez was convicted of murder in Texas, June 14, 2005 in a 1995 shooting and was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
      - It actually took them six years to indict him on that murder rap.
      - He filed for an appeal in the Texas intermediate court of appeals which was the same court that confirmed his conviction July 12, 2006.
      - Only problem with that was that his lawyer did not file a petition for another review of his case with the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals within the 30-day time limit given by state law.
      - Because that got messed up, on July 19th, 2007 Gonzalez filed in a Texas state court for the right to appeal. The courts denied his appeal on November 21, 2007.
      - So because of that, on January 24th, 2008, he filed another petition to appeal in the U.S District Court for the Northern DIstrict of Texas and now here he is trying to get his case heard for his right to appeal.

    3. Summary of the Arguments before the SCOTUS

      - Basically Gonzalez argues that if the Supreme Courts sides with the state courts, the time for petitioners will be running out before they legally get the right to actually appeal which is unacceptable and unjust. Also he argued that the courts denied his petition for appeal but  it took them a year to actually finalized his conviction.  With being said there is no way he could have filed for an appeal if they hadn't even finalized his sentence.

    4. Predictions on the outcome
      - I think that because they denied his claim based on a stupid technicality that he just might be granted the appeal on top of which the timing issue makes no sense the way it was handled so he's bound to get the appeal granted.

El Muchos Lados de Mi por Chelsea Starks

Posted by Chelsea Starks in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Friday, November 4, 2011 at 10:55 pm
The purpose of this project for Spanish 4 Quarter 1 was to help enhance as well as learn new ways of expressing yourself. For our Quarter one benchmark we wrote a 2 part essay explaining things that were on the surface of us and went more in depth with the second part talking about the things people don't see. The significance of masks for me is that it allows me to protect my identity as well as from other people. For other cultures masks could be a way of escape and a creative way to share oneself with the world that maybe they would not normally.

No sé totalmente quien yo soy. No Child Left Behind Act

This is the No Child Left behind Act

Reflection:
I chose this bill because I felt like it was really relevant to our every day life and has been for a while. I know that because of this bill our school exists to prove it wrong. To prove that we don't need these test to improve academic achievement among students. I chose this particular presentation format because I wanted to do something engaging, thought provoking, as well as intriguing visually. The challenges I overcame in this project was figuring out how exactly I could get my point across about the bill without seeming boring or over the top. Another challenge I had was getting the footage that I needed and getting the timing for each clip. If I had to do this project all over again I'd very well try to add more to it but I would have also made two or three videos showing information on the bill, how one side feels about it, and how the opposing side feels about the bill instead of kind of lumping everything together. It was a very quick video that was straight and to the point but I think it could have been better. The research and investigation told me that if you an idea and you feel strongly about it, especially something that can impact people's every day life, all it needs is support and possibly money as well so that it can move forward. Teachers don't agree with standardized testing and though to their protests and because of bureaucrats with money and politicians taking bribes, the Senate voted to pass this bill anyway. My process was pretty easy because you could find information almost anywhere on it. I could find both perspectives from their standpoints and I could easily understand it. Overall this bill was really cool to learn about and I had fun making this media and I hope to continue making projects like these.

Lobbying Issue: Funding for Philly Youth Poetry Movement (Phase Two)

Posted by Chelsea Starks in American Government - Laufenberg on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 8:15 pm
For Phase Two of my Lobbying Project, I found that since I live in district 3 of the city, Jannie L. Blackwell is my city council representative. I found that she has been an advocate the youth and underprivileged kids since she has been appointed. She has tons of experience in politics and has helped build relationships between communities. Her own interests and focus lies within the community. Her ultimate goal is to help make Philadelphia better as a whole. Since she suceded Lucien Blackwell in 1992, she has been the voice of the youth that cannot speak up for themselves and tries to support them in anyway. Just yesterday, a city wide curfew had been passed into law for minors that are out past certain times. She was the only one who voted against it along with many people in the city.
Another one of the people in legislation that I can talk to is Mayor Nutter. He is a prominent supporter of PYPM and sees just ow influencial PYPM really is. He has high hopes for this non-profit and for our success in our lives. He felt truly touched by how this group of young people can come together and be creative, feel safe, feel comfortable, and share their ideas, thoughts, and etc.

Lobbying Issue: Funding for Philly Youth Poetry Movement

Posted by Chelsea Starks in American Government - Laufenberg on Monday, October 10, 2011 at 9:14 pm
In Philadelphia there has been increase in shortage of funding for the city's recreational programs in the last few years and many argue that it's because of the growing problem of the young people in Philadelphia. Though there it isn't all youth, a bad handful seems to spoil the bunch. Many argue that if these young people had something constructive to do and people to take the time and help these misguided teens along, they could bring the generation that some call "the worse yet" into the best minds and voices yet to be heard. Founder, Greg Corbin believes that everyone has a story and that eveyr young person is capable of telling his or her story through art or some other expression. Philly Youth Poetry Movement is more than just poetry, more than just poets, and more than just talented young people. We are creators, we are innovators,  we are the future's leaders. That is why I want to make it my lobbying project to help PYPM gain more funding. PYPM was founded in 2006 and what Greg envisioned was exactly his dream come true. At-risk youth ages 13-19 using poetry as a catalyst to express and advocate for themselves, explore their identities, enhancing their literacy and critical thinking skills, and become agents of social change. The main supporters we have are Mayor Michael Nutter, teachers in not only the SLA community, but teachers all across Philadelphia. Unfortunately the main opponents of this are republicans and the Governor Tom Corbet. What I would like to see proposed is that the funding they are trying to use to keep these rec centers open, some should go to help PYPM get a building and help this non-profit grow into something bigger that helps the youth become the confident, model citizens, that will one day change the world.

Musical Instrument Blog #2

Sound is produced by the flute by the air molecules vibrating against the metal and going through certain holes to make specific notes. The energy that is transferred from the initial blow across the hole, is transferred when the air molecules are disturbed and they start to dissapate the further you go from them. Based on my understanding, I'm changing the pitch by blocking some holes and not allowing air through. The holes are just about the most important physical characteristic in this instrument because they alter the sound, pitch, and notes that come through the flute. I will probably have to use some pipe to make the body and possibly drill holes though them so that the sound will sound just right. I will play it just like I'd be playing a real flute. It's like riding a bike, you never forget. Once I get the materials to make my instrument, I will measure out a few things and make it easier on myself by only drilling holes that I will need to keep uncovered.

Musical Instrument Blog #1 - The Flute

Posted by Chelsea Starks in Physics - Echols on Sunday, May 22, 2011 at 6:29 pm

The flute has been a very intriguing instrument to me from the way it is held, to the way it is played. I have had the great opportunity of playing one and it's fairly easy once you get the hang of it. The flute is played by holding the flute to your right. Then by placing the lip plate just at the bottom of your lower lip, purse your lips together and blow as if you were saying the word "too." It takes a little while to get it but once you get the hang of it you're good. Changing notes is easy once you know how to produce sound. You have to hold down certain keys on the flute to make different notes and switch your fingers up and down and sometimes, right to left. The flute is shaped like a long rod with silver keys and is sectioned off by three pieces when disassembled. This makes me think about how easy it can be to change sound kind of like by allowing air to pass through certain holes in an instrument can effect the type of notes it plays. The connection I can make between what I am observing and what I already know about sound waves is that certain notes are louder and have a higher frequency reach people's ears faster than lower notes.

Here's a video of how to play the flute =)

Here's a video of some one playing the flute =)

Not sure if these can be viewed in school but give it a try!
