SLA Mentor: Mr. Hernandez

Topic Summary:

Figuring out how to effectively create a club at SLA, with there being a focus on reducing students’ stress levels based on the activities.

Project Abstract:

I created a karaoke club that would consist of students being able to sing and dance along to their favorite songs in a judgment-free zone. I began with putting up posters around the school, asking a friend to design one for me that would catch the eye of those who were interested. As it was only possible for meetings to occur during one lunch band, it was difficult to reach a larger amount of students who were interested in attending. I held four meetings, with required surveys for students to complete before and after they experienced the club. In the surveys, there were questions regarding their level of stress, how they felt, what they do to help themselves, and what can be improved in the club for next time. Each meeting was different because the number of people who attended was not consistent and the energy was either very high or significantly low, all of which affected the way the group as a whole participated. It was difficult trying to contain everyone and the kinds of music and activities we ended up doing when it came to deciding on a song or video on Youtube, it spiraled a little out of my control. I attempted to make changes, which included a judging round but it didn’t work well since people didn’t enjoy it, or want to participate. Ultimately, I decided to keep the genre of music to pop for a more universal reach as a constant throughout each meeting.

For one of my club meetings, I want to include pop songs that are from the early 2000’s and 2010’s and this source goes into the evolution and how it has become different over the past century. It surprisingly goes into copyright issues, and the formation of laws in America to prevent copying, and to make more money and produce original songs. Genres like Jazz and the Blues were very popular in the 20s, and eventually the radio began to play different kinds of music once musicians started creating other sounds and lyrics. It went from saxophones and trumpets, to electric guitars and soundboard rhythms.

This source is crucial since it is going to be a main part of how I am introducing my club and sharing with others of how I love pop-punk. It explains in depth of the origins from the 70’s and 80’s, and the difference in how ‘hard’ it used to be with vocals and instruments. There was a line of what made a band either pop-punk or hardcore, with certain characteristics to categorize them. The main era of pop-punk from more recent years started in the 90’s, with huge success from bands like Green Day. It evolved more as the years went on, bands like Blink 182 and Simple Plan became more popular and it continued growing into lots of more exposure and growth in the genre.

  1. Hagan, Abigail. “The Power of Music Therapy .” Belmont University, Belmont University, www.belmont.edu/burs/pdf/Music - Hagan.pdf.

I found this research paper from a student at Belmont University, and she wrote about music therapy and how it actually works and is effective to those who are interested in using that process. It has become more established overtime in the world of healthcare, and targets specific situations such as relieving stress, pain, memory, and communication. It goes into multiple fields like psychology and physicians, so it is not limited to one career only. I thought it was so interesting that students are becoming more intrigued by researching the cause and effects of music, and how there is a lot of data to back up the way it helps a lot people out.

  1. Iyer, Pico. “Daisuke Inoue.” Time, Time Inc., 23 Aug. 1999, content.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,2054546,00.html.

This source was important for me to include because it gives a large overview and information about the man who created the very first karaoke machine. It was a bit difficult for me to find sources that explained his life, because he is still alive so there isn’t a lot of specific pieces that could be researched. Daisuke Inoue had friends who were in a band, and he was inspired of how they could read music and retain the melodies and lyrics all from memory. He then made it a mission to save up money to have his own version of karaoke, and sing along to different tapes.

  1. “Karaoke History - Do You Know How It Started?” DJ-BrianC - Music For All Occasions, www.djbrianc.us/dj-services/karaoke-dj/karaoke-history/.

My first step into doing research had to be about learning how karaoke came to be, and how it has evolved overtime. This source goes into different decades of how it began, and starts out in the 60s which was surprising to me. It has become a large phenomenon in America, but came from Japan and someone who is Filipino. This will help me understand how it spread quickly in a time when there was less technology to spread something like karaoke. I think that it’s very interesting of how there was a mention of stereos and equipment becoming more high end so that the karaoke experience is able to become increasingly better.

This source immediately jumps into how students gravitate towards doing work in study groups, and how figuring out that there is a pattern to go along with this. It makes me think of how SLA is surrounded by working in groups always, using our collaboration core value to efficiently get a lot more work done rather than have a bunch of independent assignments. The two patterns were ‘the gaze’, looking in a certain way only at your notebook, or always up to show confidence and preparation. The other pattern is ‘absorbing the materia;’, including in depth discussions and allowing more room to understand and actually grasp the material they are learning.

The biggest piece from this article that resonates with me and the planning of my club is how Social Cognition was one of the first pieces of vocabulary and information given. It’s when you try and understand or predict the behavior of others and yourself in social activities, and me planning out everything to happen for this club is me doing exactly that. It goes further into how people may interpret and understand that situation or event, and how every person has a different opinion and way of taking something. I find that super interesting because I intend on showing pop-punk as my first genre and although I may love it, others may not and find the music offensive in some cases.

  1. “Why Do People Go to Karaoke Alone in Japan? – Japan Info.” Japan Info, jpninfo.com/120494.

This source goes more into the karaoke city of origin, Japan. It’s incredible that it directly translates to ‘empty orchestra’, being very self-explanatory about what the actions are for those who participate in it. It lists multiple reasons of why one should go to a karaoke bar, or rent a room called a Karaoke Box, and experience a real part of the Japanese culture while travelling. There is a brief mention of how lots of people even attend karaoke alone, and how it’s more of a bigger impact if you do so. It helps with relieving stress, confidence, and practising singing.

I found this website, and I was interested to read it because it is from the US National Library of Medicine, and National Institutions of Health. It explains how music is one of the most relaxing and important aspects to someone’s daily life. This source goes further into some history of music, and how it has been around for a long time, and scholars for years have been researching the way that music is purposeful. Music has evolved and become so different over the centuries, but there has been significant research about music becoming a way to bring pleasure and relaxation, but there is a certain limit to how far that can reach someone.

  1. “Stress.” Mental Health Foundation, 7 Nov. 2018, www.mentalhealth.org.uk/a-to-z/s/stress.

This source is from an official mental health foundation, so I knew it was a solid source to include. I wanted to have the knowledge on stress, mainly because it is what I am trying to “measure”. Stress is when your body is responding to an event or situation that exudes a lot of pressure. Having this source go specifically into what triggers and changes occur helps me understand what not to do when I conduct my club meetings. The questions asked were very specific to different mental and physical effects, and there are many solutions and tips that can try to ease someone experiencing high levels of stress.

Podcast #1: Literal and Figurative

Group Members: Lauren, Dayanna, Taylor, Chloe & Jayla

We are doing a podcast on the Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin. Our first episode of our podcast goes into the basic plot of the Immortalists, while explaining some brief information about the author Chloe Benjamin. We go into depth about how the writing is able to convey very vivid images, and in each section we have read up to so far showcase the times in which they are set in. The four main characters are discussed more in depth, and we explore the way siblings Simon and Klara are perceived after their lives are explained in full. The two older siblings are mentioned along with some predictions, as that is what is apart of our next reading.

Compassion vs Cruelty

Lauren Nicolella, Aysha Siddiquee & Greg Tasik

This is a card game similar to the format of Cards Against Humanity, but with fewer cards and many different prompts and situations that pertain to The Road.

The rules:

Each of the 4 players starts off with 8 cards, 4 compassion and 4 cruelty. During each round, the person who’s turn it is reads a context card and gets to judge their favorite answer in response to the scenario. They have the power of which card makes most sense to them, that may make or break the situation you’re put in. The player with the most scenario cards at the end of the game wins.

Objective:

Obtain the most cards in the end, while managing to survive through the different scenarios of survival.

How it’s played:

  1. Shuffle two separate decks of 16 compassion cards and 16 cruelty cards.

  2. Each player gets 4 cruelty and 4 compassion cards.

  3. One player draws one scenario card out of the scenario card pile.

  4. The other 3 players choose one of the 8 cards to respond to the scenario.

  5. The player that draws the scenario card chooses which scenario they like best. (very subjective and random, such as how the characters in the story act)

  6. Repeat steps 3 through 5 till all scenario cards have been drawn.

  7. Player with the most scenario cards at the end of the game wins.

Categories of cards:

  • Compassion cards (morality)- 16 cards

  • Cruelty cards (immoral)- 16 cards

  • Context cards (scenarios)- 8 cards

Explanation & Connections:

The main concept of this game is to make the personal decision on whether something is moral or immoral based on the scenario and decisions the players are given to choose from. In The Road, the man and boy had very limited options of how they could survive and get through another day, which is why we are giving each player a random choice at being cruel or compassionate. The scenarios we chose the players to engage with are either ideas based on the novel, or were major scenes that had taken place and affected both the relationship and well-being of the man and boy. There are connections to cases of starvation, cannibalism, violence, and relationship-building that the man endure on their journey together and it is up to each player to decide which way they would want to live. If it gets picked is up to the judge that round, so keep in mind of who is in charge of that since everyone has different views on survival.

Value System:

The value system is based or morals, and it is up to the players of what is valuable to them in the situation they are given. We wanted this to be interpreted as they are given tiny yet significant details of compassion, and more harsh cruelty cards since it is more of a reality in a survival setting. In The Road, there were encounters with different kinds of people who reacted differently to both survival and with others, and it is their choice to be compassionate or cruel to who they come across. The most valuable part of this game is obtaining as many context cards as possible, so making sure that the people playing you are conscious of how to win you over.

Risks & Rewards:

The main risk is losing all of your cards (if the game ends up going to every round) since there won’t be anymore options for that player and will ultimately die. Whoever has the most cards secures a safe spot in being alive, and is the first to go in the next match.

Compassion Cards- These are the cards that correlate with the situations and actions that occur to the Man and the boy’s journey that revolve around kindness.

  13. Teach 1 person how to swim.

  14. Share your dream with 1 person.

  15. Make grape flavored-water.

  2. Take the items and clothes of 1 person.

  3. Get shot in the leg with an arrow.

  13. Face the harsh reality that your partner will die soon.

  14. Have false hope.

  15. Murder a man who innocently crossed paths with you.

  16. Get lost in the woods.

Conext Cards- These are scenarios that correlate to the situations that the man and boy find themselves in throughout their journey

Scenarios (Context)- 8

  1. You find multiple people scared and naked in a barn, what do you do?

  2. You are starving and are resorting to alternate methods. What will you do?

  3. You wake up in an abandoned house and hear someone walking into the room you’re in, what do you do?

Another Reason to Love Animals

Domesticated animals have always been a large interest of not only children, but adults as well. Whether it is a dog, cat hamster or even a ferret, they are another vital member of a family that is deserving of love and endless cuddles. The options are truly endless and all animals provide a very large mental and physical factor to families around the world. By having a pet in a household, it is benefitting one’s mental health by keeping them occupied and gives a sense of relief because of a distraction being placed on them.

Anxiety and depression are one of the largest mental health issues that many people have to face on the daily. Although these are not easy to overcome, there are ways to help an individual solely based on adopting a pet. According to the American Psychiatric Association, animals help a range of those who have mental illnesses. “These specially trained therapy dogs help people with a variety of mental health conditions, including, dementia and Alzheimer’s, depression, PTSD, and autism. Therapy sessions typically include a therapist and the dog and its handler and they often work together through a series of sessions.” By having a pet, it allows people to be active, therefore taking their mind off of what had been stressing them out. Dogs are being trained to become therapy and service dogs, giving access to be in a hospital, which is one of the main places they are being brought to in order to provide some source of help. By having these certified pets in places like hospitals and simply a home with a family, they are slowly contributing relief to those who face struggles every day.

Many scientific studies, research, and surveys have been conducted in order to test if the possibilities are true and actually effective to those who adopt a pet. Steve Feldman from the Anxiety and Depression Association of America has researched a concept he calls “the pet effect,” which is explained through some statistics taken from a survey. “Any pet owner will tell you that living with a pet comes with many benefits, including constant companionship, love and affection. Not only are people happier in the presence of animals, they’re also healthier. In a survey of pet owners, 74% of pet owners reported mental health improvements from pet ownership, and 75% of pet owners reported a friend’s or family member’s mental health has improved from pet ownership.” By owning an animal, responsibilities are given and expected among a family and individual as well. Creating a new routine and being a part of caring for a new furry member of a family can create a distraction from the previous amount of mental issues that were preventing daily actions to be able to happen. Even with smaller pets like hamsters or guinea pigs, they require more maintenance than a more domestic animal like a cat or a dog, and that close animal interaction helps with relieving fear and anxiety.

Although adopting a pet may not be a solution for everyone dealing with a mental health issue, it is a great alternative and worth a try if there is an available option to do so. By having a companion constantly around, it could make up for the absence of another human and discard many negative thoughts and overwhelming feelings someone may feel throughout the day. Animals are a source of therapy and relief, and are able to be accessed easily, as there are always many dogs, cats, hamsters, ferrets, and plenty of other pets that are available and are willing to look for a friend as well.

This was my best possible 2Fer because I feel that I did a lot more research that also had an impact on me and others. The topic I chose allowed me to be genuinely curious about what I was going to be writing about, since animals are a huge part of my life and I have noticed some changes of when they are around and how I have changed mentally throughout this school year. A main goal I tried to stick to was making sure that my points were not going too all over the place, since I have a tendency to skew away from what I originally presented in my thesis statement. Finally, I have been able to work on my analytical essay skills and I feel that this definitely involved the most percents and statistics to help back up my argument, as well as follow up points that lead into the topic.

A Not So Clueless Shrew

Posted by Lauren Nicolella in English 3 · Pahomov · B Band on Sunday, April 15, 2018 at 9:29 pm

A Not So Clueless Shrew

Comparing “The Taming of the Shrew” to “Clueless”

In William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” it proves that there is a high level of expectations that lies within a relationship, and it is seen through the characters getting married within the book. Between both couples Bianca and Lucentio and Katherine and Petruchio, the man was expecting some kind of money to be provided by the father of the wife. In “Clueless”, the audience is shown that your reputation and popularity relies on being in a relationship and how wealthy you are. While having a lens on Cher and Dionne during the film, there is difficulty for them to gain a proper amount of respect from the boys at their school. These texts reflect that there is a higher level of physical and reputation expectations rather than mental and emotional worth. This is due to the social belief that men are always looking for more or even the wrong thing from women when trying to get in a relationship.

"Petruchio: Come, come you wasp! I' faith, you are too angry. Katherine: If I be waspish, best beware my sting. Petruchio: My remedy is then to pluck it out."

(Act II, Scene i, 222-224)

In this scene from “Shrew,” it was a part of the conversation Petruchio and Katherine were having when they first met. Both characters are quick to respond with intense and meaningful banter in order to allow their relationship to be able to move forward in a way to get to know and understand each other. It allows room for there to be a line drawn of where their comedy lies without making the other offended.

Cher and Dionne are showing their new friend Tai around the school, and Dionne’s boyfriend Murray comes up to greet her in a way that is not what she wants.

In this scene from “Clueless,” Murray comes up behind Dionne saying “Woman, lend me five dollars,” and she instantly rolls her eyes and tells him that she repeatedly told him to not call her that since she wanted to be called by her name. Throughout the film, Murray then respects his girlfriend and is shown to be more caring than the audience may have thought due to what she expected out of him. Although this scene connects to Katherine’s ways in the beginning Act II of where she was introduced in “Shrew,” it contrasts towards the end of the book when she becomes submissive and obedient towards Petruchio.

“Katherine: Thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper, thy head, thy sovereign, one that cares for thee, and for maintenance commits his body to painful labor both by sea and land.”

(Act V, Scene ii, 162-165)

This scene is from the end of “Shrew,” Petruchio convinces Katherine to be completely devoted to him, and there is no longer a sense of self worth; Petruchio was able to succeed at “taming” his newly wedded wife.

Cher’s friend Elton insisted on giving her a ride home since he was into her, but the audience were the only ones who were aware of it. He admits her feelings and Cher responds back.

In this clip from “Clueless” Elton was clearly looking to get a lot more out of Cher sexually, and did not expect to be just friends since he was taking her acts of politeness out of context. Both women developed throughout the texts: Katherine realized she needed a man to keep her physically and mentally satisfied while Cher became not only self-dependant, but found a way to help her reputation without the need of a man to belong with her. It became the perfect combination to keep her from becoming completely dependant on what she thought mattered the most .

Expectations have become a way that relationships have been able to become functional or not, and with that it shows how society has different approaches towards dating depending on the time period. It reflects that Cher and Dionne are able to gain boyfriends while setting them straight in order to benefit themselves, and Katherine felt that she needed to change all of her ways in order to please her new husband. These texts show the audience of how there is a less traditional way of entering relationships concerning money and has evolved into caring more about mental and emotional worth and importance instead.

This is Dedicated to You - Lauren Nicolella

This is Dedicated to You

To be completely honest, 2017 was the most difficult year of my life. That’s really saying something because I genuinely thought that my days in middle school had taken that spot. Valentine’s Day is usually supposed to be a day filled with love and positivity, but all I got was bad news and unavailable heart-shaped donuts. I was prepared to hand my mom the roses I had received at school, but when I walked in my house, there was unexpected and terrible news.  To sum up the rest of that day, I now have a larger hatred towards cigarettes.

At that point I really had no idea what I was about to experience. I knew what was going to come, but the false hope along the way was incredibly unnecessary and cruel to my family. I constantly had the thought floating around in my mind, she survived breast cancer before, actually, twice, so she’ll be able to fight through this too. I always knew she was strong. I thought that she was going to be okay, so I believed that her strength would shine through once more. Unfortunately, I was wrong. I think that still continues to be the main reason of why I get upset when I think about the whole journey: she no longer had the fight in her. That’s what hurts the most.

My mom would always try to attend as many appointments with her as possible, so she could report back to my family about what had happened. At one point she was given a confident, “Just about 50% of the tumor is all gone!” from the doctor. I’m still angry about this. You’re a doctor, someone who is supposed to be specialized in helping people, but all you did was give us all wrong information and a wrong sense of hope in exchange for our money. I hope you felt guilty while telling her that when it absolutely was not true.

The sound that would come out of her mouth every other minute or so replicated every exaggerated smoker cough because the years of chain smoking cigarettes had finally caught up to her. Her eyes drooped, and perked up when something decided to forcefully exit her lungs. The arm that covered her mouth was wrapped with icy veins that showcased skin and bones that did not suit the sudden lack of fat. “I wanted to lose weight, but definitely not this way.” When her body became more frail and sickly due to the multiple chemotherapy sessions, all of her hair had been gone by then. She looked like an entirely different person. I guess I never really realized the huge difference until the middle of her journey. I can’t even imagine what it was like to wake up after having multiple chemo treatments. I’m sure it was absolutely horrible. I’m so sorry you had to go through that, and it didn’t even up paying off in the end.

“I read an article about a woman who was forced to take her garment off for her license photo. I can’t go like this. If I recover, there will be no way for people to recognize me.” My aunt explained to me how she was due for a new photo, and by that time she barely had any fuzz on top of her head. She bought head wraps in every color. She wanted to be able to match with her outfits and not feel too insecure about herself. Her frail hand reached along the table, grabbing her ID while her other hand clutched a tissue for whenever she coughed. My eyes shifted over to the pea green nightshirt hung low on her shoulder, revealing bones that had never been that visible before. I didn’t want to stare too long, so I shifted my attention back towards the flower place settings on her dining table.

“Here’s my old one.” I lifted my head back up, unexpected tears forming in my eyes after I stared at my aunt’s transformation. It truly was heartbreaking to see the shocking change. On the left was a slight smile with rounder cheeks, a signature grey short haircut, with dangling earrings to top it all off. The person on the right was entirely different, and she took a slow slip of her ginger-ale while setting it back down onto the table. She wore the same glasses for years, but they suddenly looked to be abnormally large for her face. I rapidly blinked my tears away, taking a deep breath in. That night I asked my mom if she noticed it too, and she did.

The amount of times I picked at the raw skin on my thumbs at her funeral was unable to be counted. It was awkward, and I was stressed. It was two days before my birthday and it was utterly depressing. I didn’t want to hear birthday wishes at my great aunt’s funeral, I wanted to hear her sing to me through the phone and be able to expect an early card in the mail. That was her thing: she always sent everyone cards for their birthdays and Christmas. When my mom had handed me a yellow envelope the night of my birthday, I crawled into my bed and bawled my eyes out. I kept it right next to my bed, tucked right under my CD player. It’s always the thought that counts. My aunt was sick and still kept my birthday in mind no matter how terrible she felt, and that absolutely ruins me. I can only hope that I will strive to be that kind and thoughtful. The next morning I could barely open my eyes. The top lids were so puffed out I could barely recognize myself when I looked in the mirror. My hands reached up to slightly pull at my undereyes while inching closer to the mirror, the purple veins being more present than ever before.

Speaking of being kind and thoughtful, that was the complete opposite case for my cousins, and even my uncle. “Oh, so I guess you’re the special one.” I stood in the middle of the church with folded arms, a slight scowl formed on my face. I decided to not respond, because of course they always have something to say. And so what if I am? I was there to visit and help her out, where were you? To this day, it still makes me irritated that they even had the nerve to act so insensitive towards me. She specifically asked me to go with her to work, and asked me to help with things around her house. I tried to block that out because it isn’t what matters at this point. I know I did something good, and I’m not going to let the words of others take that feeling away.

Attending school immediately became something that was a struggle for me. I didn’t want to talk to anyone, only those who I really trusted. Even then I felt like I was a bit of a bother, regardless of all the times my friends told me it was completely fine to release my emotions. It didn’t help that I have a really guilty conscience about everything. My mind constantly felt empty and soon there became a lack of motivation and a constant state of unhappiness. I grasped onto little things that would make me feel better, music being a huge outlet. Although it helped me temporarily, I still felt like I was dragging myself around with a rain cloud over my head. I never used to fall asleep around 8 o’clock, but there I was doing it multiple nights a week. I was tired of not only being in school, but being forced to socialize, of constantly being sad and emotionally exhausted. I kept being questioned by my mom, but I never really wanted to answer and say why I was upset. I always answered with a monotone, “I’m just tired.” That wasn’t exactly a lie, but I really didn’t feel like getting into a whole discussion with her about the situation.

To this day, I still feel the same way but not as extreme. I knew the consequences of being around to support my aunt, but it never fully occurred to me until the moment finally came. It was bittersweet; she no longer had to suffer, but it opened a new thought process I had never experienced before. This was the first time I’ve had a chance to fully process the whole journey of what has happened, and little pieces of her are everywhere I go. Jewelry, furniture, photographs, recordings. I face every single day with negative thoughts and constant stresses, but they’re slowly becoming less and less as I attempt to become more optimistic and positive about situations. Remembering the good times and having physical remembrances has reminded me to not only treat people with kindness, but to also not take what I have for granted. Everyday I am attempting to build up my strength towards the level she had. I hope she’s proud of me.

Eventos importantes son Columbus Day y Mummers Parade.

Y somos completos.

Veo el río,

Saboreo raviolis.

Oigo los animales,

Toco el arte.

Huelo el pan.

No soy nada... sin mi familia.

Alzo en alto mi vuelo.

No soy nada…Soy completa.

U2 - #8 Lauren Nicolella

We watched tv show Digitalnation, and it was about how multi-tasking is a myth and general information about the internet. The most memorable thing to me from this show was the multi-tasking, because I really realized how it doesn't work and I do work much faster if I don't attempt to do as, as it was said that it slows you down. It is important to watch shows like these because as the internet is becoming a normal thing occurring as we are growing up, it is really good to be informed about what you are getting yourself into. I will be able to keep my future family safe online by having my kids aware of how to act online if they were to be using programs that involve people from around the world, and low-key monitor what they are doing and make sure they are not be affected or affecting any one else. It is important to talk to my family about internet safety because my parents probably wouldn't know what some things means and to have them aware and safe. What I can tell parents that don't know how to keep their children safe online is monitor if anything major is happening between their kid and school, being connected to online activity.

Slide #2 - Nicolella

Posted by Lauren Nicolella in Technology - Freshman - Hull - y1 on Monday, December 14, 2015 at 11:04 am
Media Fluency
I received my criticism, and I made my changes I thought made most sense. I created the slide into more of a collage, as that was one of my main comments. I fixed my words and the colors, making them properly fit and stand out more. The pictures became bigger, to use more of the space up and fixed anything else I had to. I learned a lot from doing this activity, I learned how to properly use colors and the shapes of the photos. I also learned the different aspects of design, and how much it actually matters with presenting and business matters.

I used a pastel-based background, and a darker type of pastel colored-font to be in the letters. I used a darker blue to make my name pop, and stand out beyond the other colors and photos around it. Some of my photos bled through each other, the colors within the photos not clashing with each other to make it be too much going on at once, and they are things that describe me the most, as well as the words I used to describe me. I used a font that I thought looked nice, as it is easy to read and pleasing to look at. My influence and decisions to create this slide are my favorite things ever, so I made it look nice and the overall design make people get a gist of who I am.

Me gusta correr.
Soy seria sobre correr, perezosa a veces,
pero soy lo general trabajadora.
Soy fea después correr,
¡Qué terrible!
Correr me hace poderosa y fuerte.
¡Sí sí sí!
Me nombre es Lauren,
¡Me encanta correr!

1.

a. When I search my name I find Facebook profiles that show up and then images of my close friends and my aunt show up.

b. I found that my SLA email comes up, but my family also shows up.

c. This matters because it shows how the internet connects somehow to me in different ways

2. Jayla Wright (personally doesn't show up)

Successful, competitions, YouTube, makeup, actress.

a. The five words that I was told somewhat describe me, mostly the One Direction part because that's a big part of my life, also my friends because my super close friends show up.

b. One Direction, vintage, friends, SLA, Facebook.

Proyecto E1 U1: Lauren Nicolella, Afi Koffi, Olivia Musselman, Eli Zimmerman

Posted by Lauren Nicolella in Spanish 1 - Manuel - D on Wednesday, November 4, 2015 at 6:47 pm

In class we learned how to say the alphabet, this came in handy when Eli and Afi crossed paths with a troll that was not satisfied until one of them recited it back correctly, to then be able to successfully go over to the other side.

We were taught how to ask and describe multiple types of weather. This is necessary when Lauren desperately needs to know the state of weather for the day, or else she’ll melt by the extremes she will be exposed to.

We learned how to properly use tu and usted. This skill is utilized when Lauren and Olivia intend on discussing something with their teacher and Lauren uses the incorrect term while speaking to Afi but is then corrected.

Learning the days of the week proved to be an important skill when the date of a quiz is unknown. We demonstrated the concept of the days of the week in a classroom environment so the students were aware of the event coming up, and also being able to correctly state the day of the week.

Reflection - Lauren Nicolella

Posted by Lauren Nicolella in Technology - Freshman - Hull - y1 on Monday, October 26, 2015 at 12:45 pm
1. Today when we watched the video in the beginning of class, the activity we did was make Jack's day better when we pressed the eye emoji, since the focus was to stop the bullying that would happen to him.

2. This video brought to mind how bullying is a terrible thing to be involved in, and you need to speak up immediately if something were to happen to you or someone else.

3. Online, I am a fangirl who talks about One Direction and 5 Seconds of Summer. I appear to be a nice person who shares interests in the same bands with people so I am safely talking to people online.

4. I think that people perceive me as an enthusiastic person who deeply loves bands and loves to be with her friends because of the constant contact on social media.

5. The goal on internet trolls is to confuse, hurt, and damage people deeply. They don't care about peoples' feelings and are very disruptive and have no real reason to why they do it in the first place.

6. The positive and negative results of online anonymity is that people can talk to you if you're shy, but then could also talk to you to try and get info from you and be negative.

Internet Network, Nicolella

Posted by Lauren Nicolella in Technology - Freshman - Hull - y1 on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at 12:19 pm
1. My Local Area Network is Verizon. I have many devices on this network, and they are: iPhones, televisions, laptops, a tablet, wireless printer, and three game consoles.

2. While learning about networks, an OMG moment I had was that there were different cords for the different networks and there was a difference between Internet and Intranet.

3. I think that I would tell people about how your network has a different cord, and also how everything is connected someway together through either Ethernet or Fiber Optic etc.
