Jevon and Siani Reel Reading Conversation

Posted by Siani Wilson in Reel Reading · Giknis · C Band on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at 7:31 pm

For the film conversion benchmark, we were tasked with remodeling a scene of a movie into a different genre or through the style of a different auteur. The purpose of this being to test our knowledge of cinematic and theatrical elements, and how they play a crucial role in deciding the kind of film that is created. My partner Siani and I focused on the 2012 blockbuster Hunger Games. The film centers on a young woman, Katniss, in postmodern North America, as she participates in an annual event entitled “The Hunger Games” which calls for teenagers to fight to the death until only one survives.

Written as a dystopian novel, and produced as a science fiction and fantasy film, we aimed to take the core aspects of danger and the will to survive and adjusted them into a new setting. With the usage of cinematic and theatrical elements, we adapted the film into a western. The scene we focused on, common titled, “Career Pack chase Katniss” shows the main character Katniss being hunted down by a group of fellow participants in the games. In order to make transform this scene into that of a western, we needed to employ and highlight the various techniques that are commonly found in westerns, techniques that would give the scene the smooth yet intense style of westerns.

Beginning with the cinematic elements, framing is one that played a critical role in capturing feeling. Often in western films, employs close ups to capture the emotion and facial expression of the character as well as to highlight important aspects. Similarly we used many close up shots on our characters faces along with their weapons to show the importance of feeling in the person and of their object, in this case their guns which were very much so apart of them. Long shots, which are used to show the character entire body, usually from a distance, were employed in instances where multiple characters were in the scene so that the audience could see everything that was happening in the scene. Medium shots, which shot from the waist up, were used in many of the scenes to show the characters while also keeping some of the background in view of the reader. Two angles were used in our storyboard. High angles, which are when a character is filmed from above, was implemented during scenes where the Career Pack chased Katniss, to emphasize the danger that she was in. The second being eye level, so that the audience could look at Katniss directly and see the emotion that she is trying to relay. In most western movements, dolly/tracking is used. This is to show the movement in the scene. We used this form of camera movement and included a few slow shots to build up tension as the scene goes along.

In the form of editing, we used two types, eyeline match and cut. A cut edit is when two shots are pieced together to make the illusion of an instantaneous shot. This was evident in scenes of action/confrontation where dialogue, bullets, and the overall action was taken place from different areas of the set. Eyeline match is a technique used to allow the audience to see what the characters are seeing. We used this, during dialogue between the characters to make them reader feel they are in the scene.

When it comes to sound, many westerns are absent of outside music, instead opting for diegetic sound which is sound that originates in the scenes of the movie. In westerns these are often things like the wind, footsteps, bullet sounds, cactus rolling etc. We used diegetic sound to emphasize the sound of the weapons and to catch things that would match the environment. Lastly, rounding out the cinematic features is lighting. In terms of lighting, we aimed to remain true to the time that a western would have taken place. This means natural light in the outside scenes, and dimmer in the indoors.

While cinematic elements are important to a movie’s conception, theatrical elements are just as necessary. First off, one of the most important aspects of a film is the set. This is where the movie takes place and ultimately provides a backing to the film. The particular scene in was taken from the arena, which showed a forest of sorts. Western’s usually take place on the American Frontier, so we made that the new set for our scene.

Like set, costumes also play an important role in distinguishing a film as a western. You will often find things such as cowboy hats, boots, vest, loosely based clothing in warm or earth tones. Instead of the modern clothes as seen in the movie, our characters wore cowboy hats and boots to make it clear they are in a western. In the Hunger Games, weapons such as arrows and knives were the main props utilized throughout the movie. To make it fit the time period, we traded in the arrows for guns, as big portion of westerns are the epic shootout scenes. Acting choices can set the tone of a movie, as it is the characters that the audience is following. We wanted to keep the same tone for the modified clip from the original as it the choices made emphasize the desire of fighting to stay alive. Overall, a lot of things go into creating any specific type of movie. These are the ways in which we were able to transform the Hunger Games into a traditional western movie.

MS Awareness

Posted by Siani Wilson in Capstone · Pahomov · Wed on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at 10:29 am

Capstone 2018

Science Leadership Academy // 4.14.2018

For my Capstone for the year of 2018 has been one that I known about since my freshman year. I have had many idea changes but in the end I finally settled with my original plan to just expand my idea and turn it into a project that I'm really proud of. I made a website for people to visit and learn about MS awareness through the mind of a high school senior, letting people into my personal life. As most of you know my mom has MS and it's something that can't be cured. This topic is important to my entire family. I spent time reaching out to different organizations that help out the MS community. I've taken part in the MS walk to raise money and I raised money on my own at school. I want to thank everyone who supported my bake sales at SLA. Together we raised over $250 dollars for the National MS Society. Along the way, I’ve also been at Morris elementary school telling people about my capstone and what has led me to this stage of my high school career. The road blocks that I've had during the process was trying to get my own booth at the MS walk, that didn't work out but it didn't stop me from helping out the local people in my area and my mom as well. This project has been pretty interesting an I believe that the four years at SLA have been just a preparation for something to be bigger and better than all of us.

Taming of the Basketball

Posted by Siani Wilson in English 3 · Pahomov · B Band on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at 10:02 am

In The taming of the Shrew,  The characters Bianca and Lucentio are the ones who I will mostly be focusing on for my movie Love and Basketball. Lucentio is trying to pursue his love interest who is Bianca, the daughter of Baptista, who is also the father to her older sister Kate who is known to be the “Shrew” in the story. Petruchio is the one who wants to marry Kate, If they marry Bianca is able to marry who ever she wants because she has a lot of suitors. Kate becomes violent with Bianca mainly because she thinks Bianca is stealing away all her potential spouses.

The movie Love and Basketball  stars two people who are in love with each other since they were 11 years old. The movie follows them all through high school, college and the years after that. The two characters Monica and Quincy met each other when Monica moved next door to Quincy and his family. They quickly become friends when Monica joins him and friend for a game of Basketball. They are quick to judge her because she’s a girl who know how to play basketball. Even through high school they both still are very passionate about the sport and they attend each other games. Quincy is well liked ,  but girls see him as a target because he is one of the best players on the team and his father has had successful career with the NBA. If Taming of the Shrew was a movie then there’s a strong possibility that Quincy would be considered Bianca because he is wanted by so many girls including Monica even if she doesn’t want to admit it.

"Quote from Play"

“Good sister, wrong me not, nor wrong yourself, To make a bondmaid and a slave of me. That I disdain. But for these other goods-- Unbind my hands”

Act 2/ Sc. 1/1-3, Bianca to Kate.

In this part of the Shrew, Kate has tied up her sister's hands and goes on go tell her that she is basically to blame, Kate thinks that Bianca has stolen all of the suitors and is almost saying that she is the reason that nobody want’s her. Bianca then replies to Kate saying that she shouldn’t blame her and tie her up just because of how she feels. Really it isn’t Bianca's fault that the men in the play thinks that Kate isn’t the wife material. It’s not because she isn’t attractive, it’s mainly because she isn’t kind to anyone around her. But there is one guy that is willing to marry Kate and is trying to change her into the women she can be.

Screenshot 2017-04-21 at 8.12.56 AM.png

In this scene Monica is at Quincy’s game and one of girls or suitors hands her a note to give to Quincy. Now, the reason why she didn’t want to give it to him herself is because she didn’t want him to think that she’s “fast”.  The note reads something like her thinking that he’s cute and she wanted him to take her to the dance and she was going to leave him “satisfied” after the dance. In the play, Lucentio is with Bianca, not knowing that Lucentio is dressed up as a schoolmaster trying to woo her. Lucentio would be the girl who is trying to make the advances on quincy through Monica.

"Quote from Play"

”That being a stranger in this city here Do make myself a suitor to your daughter, unto Bianca, fair and virtuous. Nor is your firm resolve unknown to me, In preferment of the eldest sister.”

Act 2. Sc. 1 Line 95. This is coming from Tranio as Lucentio

In this scene, as Tranio pretending to be Lucentio has made himself a suitor for Bianca. Although Tranio is the one who is trying to make the advance on Bianca and he is telling her father Baptista that he wants Bianca for his wife. He also mentions that he knows that he is new and Baptista begins to ask him questions about himself.

Screenshot 2017-05-02 at 6.41.52 PM.png

In this part of the movie, Monica has just gotten back from the dance and she and Quincy are sitting outside where their house connect. This is the part where she has made a move on Quincy and he now know that she is definitely into him because when he goes in for a hug, she bends over and kisses him. Then they continue to kiss and then a little after they go into Monica room and have sex. This scene is related to the book because she has now made herself available to him, and now he knows that she is one of the suitors and that’s what Lucentio has been doing with Bianca. In the movie Monica is the one that has the greater chance of being with Quincy because they grew up with each other and it seems as through in the book that Lucentio is the one with the greater chance because he is making more moves than the others to win her.

Society views on relationships and things leading up to them is complicated because we tend to make them complicated and in the play and in the movie this is a more simpler case because in both of them made it seem like this was all about which suitor or girl was the right one for each other. I don’t think that either of these stories show how society’s attitude is towards relationships but they do show that there is so many possible ways for some to try to make themselves “available” to each other. It may also show how much a person is willing to work to get to one another.

What’s up?

If someone was to ask a teenager if they believe that teens spend too much time on the internet

or just phones in general, they would say no but other like parents of these teens would have to disagree. There has been a lot of research done around this topic because it actually has become an issue that parents and other legal guardians face everyday with kids. Most of these studies shows the percentage of teens that use their phone nearly everyday single day. Many might say that phones poison the minds of children, and there is proof that it is true in a way.

The site ‘PewResearchCenter’ literally starts off by saying “24% of teens go online almost

constantly facilitated by a widespread availability of smartphones.” This is a extremely true statement because teens are and will forever be on their cells phones, consumed by the screen and social media. Cells phones and tablets have been around for a very long time and so have social media, things like Instagram, SnapChat and Facebook would be the main factors as to what would be why a lot of parents and researches might think that the minds of teenagers are “poisoned”. Teens that are between the ages of 13-17, which is more than half (56%) go online several times a day. About 12% only use the internet to go on social media once a day. 85% of teens that are African American have access to a smartphone. While others don’t have a phone at all.

Other sites like ‘ The Washington Post’ say that they have actually had teens admit that they are addicted to technology. The word addicted is sometimes taken lightly but it is very possible to be addicted to technology. On TV, they may make shows about how teens, adults even become addicted to things like drugs or sex, they also surprisingly show how they can also be hooked on things like video games and all types of things that might influence someone’s action in any type of way. “Digital devices have transformed people’s lives. They are changing everything from parent-child relationships, to human interaction, to our ability to focus on the task at hand.” This is a quote from James Steyer who is the CEO and founder of Common Sense, which is an organization that studies and rate social media intake and technology for children and adults.

People may take this lightly but many will assure teens and adults that this is a serious problem now days because of the dangers that it can cause and it’s possible for this effect your health. When someone visits the doctors, they may say something like you only need 1 screen hour per day. This is actually advice that could help someone who may be too attached to the phone. Staying on you social media sites and things like that can lead to loneliness and weight gain because all of the interaction that people are having is through a screen and that's not good for anyone. The one thing that parents would mostly be concerned about is the grades, too much screen time can also affected that as well.

The moral of the story is teens no matter what they say spend too much time on their phones, and it can lead of serious health problems. So can technology poison the minds of teens? Maybe. But it has been proven and shown that teens aren’t the only ones that can be affected by this adults can be as well. It goes both ways with this one.

The work that I did was based off many others. I thought that maybe I could reflect like a mirror image of what people do daily. What it means to be an artist to me is showing how you feel on a simple piece of paper. I used many different tecniques to make my work the way it is. All of my work was inspiration, I felt like I had to make the things I did, take a picture. I drew what I saw and I thought was worthy and was very different something no one would have though of doing. I was inspired by many but only I knew what I wanted to do.

Tv probably does influence Teenagers

Posted by Siani Wilson in English 3 · Pahomov · B Band on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at 10:19 pm

When talking about sex with teens can be tricky and also a bonus if they want to know what influences them. Teens like to watch TV, and if parents try to take it away from them, they can now watch it on their laptops or phones when nobody’s looking . All of this exposure can cause some concerns when it comes to their health. The term “Monkey see monkey do” can be used to describe what teens do when they come across something that seems fun or interesting to do, like sex. Teen sex is something that’s shown a lot in social media, people learn about it in school, but it’s mainly seen on TV. But why ? Why does TV influence or encourage teens to pursue sexual activity?

The short and simple answer to this question is yes, but the explain is more complex than a simple yes or no. Most Americans spend about a third of their free time watching television. But not all media influences depict teens having sex. According to researchers from the Rand Corporation,  3 kinds of sexual content involving was shown in the media,. The kinds of sexual contents are teens kissing and other kinds of sexual behavior, the second kind of content is the “talk” about having sex or sex in general, and lastly the third kind is the risk of having sex with someone. They surveyed around 2,000 teens, from ages 12-17 and the results found  that heavy exposure to sexual content led teens to sexual activity.

Many teenagers think that having sex is cool, and will make the other person want them even more, or at least that’s how it is being shown in tv shows and movies. That is not true in most cases involving a teen. 43% of High school students have said they already had intercourse with someone and 53% of them said they haven’t, which could be a good thing if they are looking at it statistically. Teens that do have sex experience lower grades and the one who do have sex most likely have older friends that do it and pressure them. Because of this they now know that there is no connection between delays of intercourse and TV,  meaning that most of the teens they surveyed did or didn’t have sex because of TV, there was only a connection with that and African American Teenagers. This group is the one who lets media influence them the most. Many are told that the parents of African American children watch TV more than any other race.  Other than African Americans, overall, most teens think about it but intend not to engage in sexual activity.

Tv doesn’t always have to show teens having sex or talking about it in a bad way. There are shows out there that can influence them to focus more on school work than worrying about bring pleasure to someone else. TV can also be a source for encouraging them to continue with their abstinence. Studies does shows that Teenagers engaging in sexual activity use condoms, 65% of children can recall them using a condom, according to the researchers from Rand Corp. They have done a lot of research for figure whether or not Television influence them but now that they know TV is mostly likely not the reason that teenagers have sex then what influences them not to?

So, does TV influence teens to have sex? the short answer is no. Although There is proof that the media can play a part in making them want to have sex earlier in life, there is no way that the media is the one to blame for children having sex. Researchers  found out that there isn’t even a connection except among a specific group. Most teens intend to wait because they know that they can do it anytime they want, it’s just not their time.

Harrison Reading Life-Style

Harrison seems to be a great reader. When I asked him what his favorite book was from his childhood, he told me that it was Green Eggs and Ham! Can you believe it I guess Dr.Seuss leaves his mark on children and on teens. The book he would like to toss out the window and hit someone with would be the book he read in english last year would be The Book Thief. Sounds boring huh? Lucky for the people in Pahomovs class that book wasn’t even mentioned to us, not once.

Harrison wants to become a better reader than he is now. Which I think is very possible for him to do if he puts his mind to it. He wants to read much more than he does now, what’s holding him back is that he can get really distracted, but if he likes a book he will read it and finish the book. He doesn’t really have a favorite genre of reading, he says if the book is interesting then that’s the book that’s he’s going to read.

Don’t text Harrison at night, he’s busy reading and nodding off. Having a dream about something nice. :)

Laws vs. The People

Posted by Siani Wilson in English 2 - Pahomov - E on Thursday, April 7, 2016 at 3:33 pm

During periods of danger, people tend to base their decisions on what will be the quickest way to relieve themselves from the situation.  This is result of humans not being able to efficiently deal with things that cause them discomfort. They will go to great measures to decline back into a space of comfort and familiarness. In modern society, people make rash decisions with the sole purpose of protecting themselves from anything they’re not used to or do not want to deal with. A mindset that can drive people into survival mode in an attempt to deter the panic, this sudden uncomfortable fear or anxiety that can cause people to act in an unnatural behavior. This often times cause for our actions to be uncivilized;  affecting the environments around us, thus causing us to to do things that we don’t want to do sometimes breaking a law or two maybe the effect of panic. Actions are determined by the complexity of a situation and the way we choose to handle it.

In  “Lord of the flies” by William Golding, this happened to a group of small boys, who were stranded on an island due to a plane crash. Not understanding what is going on around them ,they began to cause chaos because of their panic. This was because, they were stuck on an island with no adults to guide them and tell them what they should be doing. They were scared and that was the bottom line. When someone is scared they begin to panic and most of the time they want to get their mind off whatever is traumatizing them. These boys wanted to get off of that island but they couldn’t. It was physically, mentally and emotionally impossible for them.  When first reading the chapter when the boys calmed down and were able to do something that might help them get their mind off the fact that they were stuck on the island, they decided to elect Ralph, a boy who was just about the oldest of all of them,  as the leader that’s when they put all of their faith in him to help guide them off that island and back into the arms of their parents.

Once they have chosen a leader they needed rules to keep everyone on the same page because they all had the same goal. They wanted to stay safe and alive. Generally, in the real world today, when rules are created it's to keep people safe and make sure everyone has something to do. Which brings us to the question of why, Why do humans create rules and law? When do they help and when do they hurt? In the novel, it's pretty clear that having rules and laws kept everyone in place. Rules are created all the time to make sure that people know that can not do anything that they want to do.

When the boys decided that it was time for them to come up with some rules for everyone, the one rule that was most important out of all of them was the one relating to the conch shell. It was used to signal the other boys on the island, and Ralph had full control over the conch and was going to use it to his full advantage. Shortly after sounding the conch, he continued to say, “And another thing. We can’t have everybody talking at once. We’ll have to have ‘Hands up’ like at school.” (33). The conch was key to all of the boys on the island, the one who was holding the conch could have a chance to let their voice be heard just as much as the person who was next to them.

The best thing about the conch was that it was something that someone could hold and maybe have the same feeling Ralph did when he got elected to be the leader. Sadly that’s not the case, today in the real world. Humans could only hope for something as simple yet very powerful. There are 43 case like this one, but not the same exact one. When the people of the United States of America elect someone into office want someone who knows the best thing for us and can get our message across the world.

In the real world, Laws and rules keep people safe and things organized. Without them the world would be at war right now. Wherever you go there are rules that you have to follow and/or obey and if you choose not to then you have chosen to accept the consequence that come with it. This is a quote from the novel, "We've got to have rules and obey them. After all, we're not savages. We're English, and the English are best at everything." Keeping in mind that these are children, the fact that they said that they have to obey the rules really is shocking the reason behind this is because they have more common sense than most people do. The author of the book seems to believe that rules are necessary but on the other had someone might stop back at the quote and look at that word “savages.”

There are many “savages” in America, now the word savage could mean many things to many different people. The way that it’s used in the book makes the reader think of people who don’t obey and follow the rules. Today those people might be labeled as criminals, rebels or maybe they are just savage. The answer to the question of why do humans create laws and rules is simply, to keep people safe. When do they hurt? They can hurts whenever you chose to accept them as rules.

Why do humans create rules and law? When do they help and when do they hurt? - This may seem like the most easiest question to answer but once you really break the question down and begin to answer it you will understand how intricate the question really is. Humans create rules and laws to ensure that everything is going smoothly and everyone is safe. Everyone wants the same thing to keep each other safe but sometimes things don’t work out like they should. We can’t just write our own life and avoid everything that is planned for us. We don’t know what are future will consist of.

lp is going great. My Ilp is at my old school, Alliance for progress charter school and what I do there is just help the teachers with the kindergarten class during their gym class and I help the teacher grade papers and when its time to go home. Im looking forward to working in that field someday and just for now seeing how things go. Nothing major has happened so far.

Him: Well, I mean I can’t help it, girls just like me like that.

Him: whatchu mean what about kayla?

Him: I don’t talk to that girl anymore, she’s to attached.

Him; Nawl, I don’t care if you talk to her. (giggles)

Him: Wait, hold on she callin now.

(Pause…)

(On the phone with Mariah)

Him: Wassup Mariah?

Him: Yeah you can still come over.

Him: Nawl my parents aren’t home.

Him: Whatchu mean, what are we going to do?

Him: What yo, we are not going to “Netflix and Chill.”

Him: Because that boring, I’m tryna do something that fun.

Him: Wait hold on, Chris is on the other line.

(switches the line back over to Chris)

Him: Yo

Him: Now why would you call me by my first name, you know I don’t like being called Trey.

Him: You know why I don’t like being called that, and she was talking about some “Netflix and chill”.

Him: I know she thought that I wanted to watch Netflix with her, that’s only me and my lil sis.

Him: Wait hold on bro, I think she hung up.

Him: Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, just hurry up and get over here.

(Phone calls ends with Mariah, switches back over to Chris.)

Him; Yo Chris I gotta go.

Him: Because she on her way over and I gotta make my room look presentable. ( Starting fixing his bed)

Him: Because I don’t want her coming over to a dirty room, and she start thinking that I have bed bugs or something.

Him: A lot of girls do think that, member what happened to Keem?

Him: I know but he was always a dirty Young bull, so… But Yo ima call you later so I can get ready and make sure nobody is coming in the house until later on.

Him: I’m hanging up you. Your talking a little too much right now.

Him: Ima call you when she leaves OK, just stay up and close to the phone.

( The phone hangs up and then it rings again.)

Conclusions : Ugh, why is he calling back? I’m not answering I have important things to do before Mariah comes over.

I have an ILP #2

Posted by Siani Wilson in Ilp - 10Th Grade - Miles - Wed on Thursday, November 12, 2015 at 2:28 pm
Ilp is going great. My Ilp is at my old school, Alliance for progress charter school and what I do there is just help the teachers with the kindergarten class during their gym class and when its time to go home. Im looking forward to working in that field someday and just for now seeing how things go. Nothing major has happened so far. I enjoy not listening to the teachers I can do what I want... kinda.

So what's the Difference?

Posted by Siani Wilson in English 2 - Pahomov - E on Monday, November 9, 2015 at 10:06 pm

How can you tell the difference?

“ Are you from Philadelphia?”

“Ugh.. Yeah.”

“Wow you sound so different than most people in the city,”

“ Its cool”

It’s pretty funny that I remember the first time someone actually asked me was I from Philly and that I had an accent . I was shocked at first but, then I was pleased to hear that I didn’t sound like everyone else in this city. I thought about it on the bus and from the bus stop to my house. When I got home, went upstairs to a mirror and over and over again, I said different words to myself and kinda comparing how I sound. I change the way I speak on purpose, like when I’m talking to a boy that I think likes me. I’ll change the tone of my voice and I’ll speak more proper. Some boys like it and some don’t.

My first day at SLA was totally different than what I was used to in my middle school. I had been at that same school for nine years , and I been with the same people since I first started going there. I was used to how they spoke , Puberty played a part in this, and had hit most of the people at Alliance For Progress Charter School. I couldn’t really tell the difference in the way they spoke from when we was in Kindergarten till 8th grade, and since Alliance was mostly full of black students, everyone there, I thought spoke the same.

When I came to SLA, I met many new people.  I noticed that everyone came from different backgrounds and spoke differently than what I was used to hearing. One person that I met, that spoke differently than most black boys that I know, is Kaamil Jones. The way he speaks is really astonishing. The sound of his voice is also leveled. When the halfway mark of freshman year started to come around, I used to think to myself that I was speaking wrong. To me everyone was speaking so nice and elegant and I was just another black girl that was from North Philadelphia where everyone was ghetto and wrong.

“Siani,? Are you sick or something?”

“No, Grandma, why would you say that?”

“You sound different, you sound so much more…proper.”

Wow, I could hear the excitement in her voice, and it made me think how do I sound when I am on the phone, and was this because of the connection or was my voice and the way I organized my words different than any other day? I was on the phone with my grandma coming home from school, and when she said that I sound different I was shocked to hear this from her, only because I never expected to hear that from someone that has known me since I was a baby. I said “Do I?”.  I don’t think that I sound any different on the phone than I do in person. It’s been said to me many times but I had a different feeling when my grandma said it, but like I said I change the tone and sometimes the mood of my voice and rearrange my words so that they make more sense. I think that I do this without even trying.

I’m not afraid to say where I’m from but I do like to cover up the way speak. Whenever I’m not at home or in my neighborhood, I pretend to be someone I’m not. I try harder and harder everyday to blend in with the students  at SLA but it’s a little out of my character. This is because, I am trying to be someone I’m not. Sometimes I feel really out of place here but I have to remember that the reason why I applied. I wanted to be different than everyone else.

I think there is much more to somebody than the way that they talk, because judging someone by the way they sound or the way they use English words is foolish. One of the biggest things that I learned here at SLA is that everyone isn’t going to be like you or the person that you are best friends with. SLA is the perfect school to go to and learn about how diverse the world is. Even the smallest things like having an accent or even using words that don’t even exist but are in your own personal dictionary are judged quicker than you know it.

Coming to SLA is a true blessing itself. It's projects like this that drive you to want to change society itself. Many people are made fun of because they don't sound like everyone else. Here at SLA its normal to be different, no one here is the same. Everyone here has different views. Different influences. Different understanding of everything that is presented to them, such as language and the effects that it has on the world.

“It goes without saying, then, that language is also a political instrument, means, and proof of power. It is the most vivid and crucial key to identify,” James Baldwin.

It's not over until MS is cured...

Posted by Siani Wilson in English 1 - Giknis - X on Saturday, June 6, 2015 at 9:04 am

This project was the most interesting of them all, You and the World project actually changed my views on a lot of different things and it was because of the different project that everyone did. Some glows that I had were the presentation that I did in class, I thought that doing this project was the biggest glow because this project was so personal I feel like I'm helping my Mom in so many ways possible that I didn't think I could do. Some Grows that I have would be to continue this project outside of class because it become something that I enjoy doing. I enjoyed doing the Original Research, but lets start at the beginning of the project, I’m not talking about the Research part of the project I’m talking about the proposal. Coming up with a topic to actually research was a little difficult but the way I actually got my topic was from my Mom, she thought that doing this would raise awareness to the topic and get people thinking about it and though the entire project that was what I went by. Now the Research part of the project I was easy but I wish I could find more infomation on my Mom Ms so that I could share with all of you. It’s a lot still to be discovered and I will continue you update you guys if anything changes.

My Original Research was interviewing a doctor, which was scary. I thought that I wasn’t asking the right questions and getting enough information, but then I thought well it's good enough to actually write about. Things that I would do differently is maybe not have a bunch of kids there in the background making a lot of noise. I enjoyed doing the Original Research I thought that part of the project was most interesting part.

For my Agent of change, Me and My Family took part in the MS walk in late April to Early May. The walk raises money for research and new medicine, things like that maybe even finding a cure. I also did a presentation to the class, I was going to do it for advisory but plans got changed. I thought that it went well I just wish the entire class was there to see it. I hope to have a bigger impact and I’m thinking about doing something similar for capstones my senior year at SLA.

Changing The World...

Posted by Siani Wilson in English 1 - Giknis - X on Friday, May 29, 2015 at 11:27 pm

In the last 2 blog post I talked about my Moms condition and I shared a link to my interview that I did with the Doctor, if you didn't get a chance to see the video Here it is. In my first blog I introduced all of you to MS and what it is and how it affects the people around me This my first blog post and My second blog post talks about the Original Research that I did, you can view my 2nd Blog Post here. Things that are being done to help raise awareness for MS, like I mentioned before millions of people have MS and they do know about fundraisers such as Walks throughout Philly starting from the Art Museum. They have a bunch of things that they do throughout the entire year Visit this Website  for more info. Doing these fundraisers they raise thousand and the money goes toward research and maybe one day finding a cure for MS, all hopes are high that one day they will.

For my Agent of Change my Mom and I and a couple of other family members did the MS walk about 3-4 weeks ago here are some photos that I took from the top of the Art Museum Steps.Screenshot 2015-05-29 at 9.08.59 PM.png

Before the walks start they have little booths set up for your convenience and they give you water bottles. Once you return to the Museum they give you food to take on the way back home. Also for my Agent of change I gave a presentation to my class about MS, basically an overview of what's going on, give some examples of the symptoms that my Mom has and things such as that. I have the video Right here click on the hyperlink to see the video that I did in English and the slides that come with it. I felt like doing this project was very interesting in a way, but what really interested me about this project was that it just wasn't some essay or presentation. Going out into the world and actually making a change really changed my view about Project Learning. This project was like a stepping stone into someday changing the world. The idea and things that other people did like coming up with hashtags and making accounts on Twitter was really creative and I'm actually happy that we did this project because I wouldn't have learned so much about my Mom and the disease that she's fighting. I was also really thrilled about doing the original research part of the project I thought that was really fun and cool to do an interview because I have never did one before.

Things that I could have done better with was giving the presentation. I was a little scared the first time just presenting to the class. I still have a lot to cdo and much more to learn about MS and myself.

The Interview:

Posted by Siani Wilson in English 1 - Giknis - X on Monday, May 11, 2015 at 10:59 pm

The Interview:

Previously in Blog Post #1 I've told you guys about what MS is and how it affects my life personally and the people around me.I never told you guys how I feel about it, I was too young to understand what was happening to me  I also told you that my Mom, Nikki has MS and some of the things that she goes through daily, the medicines and some of the symptoms that she has. Some new information that I've found was that MS is actually more common in women, I gotten this information from a Doctor that I interviewed for the original research part of the Project. I choose to interview a neurologist at the Thomas Jefferson Hospital Department of Neurology. You guys can check out the Link here My Interview. Be aware this video isn't the best you may hear baby noises in the background( My godsister).

I find the experience of talking to a real doctor was actually pretty awesome I didn't ask the doctor about my Mom's condition I didn't want to really get too deep into that. Now that I have somebody else's perspective on the topic not just what the internet has to tell me about MS I think that I have a better understanding about it. I think that going out and actually interviewing a real Doctor, someone who has studied and is passionate about helping those who are really ill such as my Mom. Somethings that I was still thinking about is what the brain looks like or the spinal cord looks like after MS takes its toll on those parts of the body.

I've found many ways to get my class and community to get involved Take Action if you guys are interested you can help, I took part in the MS walk this is my 2nd year doing the walk and I have to say it was worth it they give you a ribbon to put on and a cup it's a really good experience and I don't regret any of it. For my agent of change I was thinking about either doing a fundraiser or giving a presentation to my advisory and just to get people thinking and maybe talking about it and raise some awareness. I have a presentation slide that I made before and I hope you guys check it out. I like doing this part of the project I think that the Agent of change is going to be really interesting and not just my project the entire 9th grade class as well.

Many things still have to be done for the Agent of change, but things are working out well.

Passion, Information, and Change: Me and MS

Posted by Siani Wilson in English 1 - Giknis - X on Thursday, April 23, 2015 at 8:22 pm

How has MS affected the people around you

For my Passion, Information, and Change: You and the World project I wanted you introduce my class to the MS society. This is an important topic to me because my Mom has MS and its not just affecting her and her health its affecting my entire family I feel like out of everyone in my family it has its biggest toll on me. I couldn't imagine life without my mom, she has always been there and some advanced stages of MS can lead to the person losing their ability to control their movement. Some of the issues is that many Doctors and Scientist don’t have a cure for this disease and in advance stages people are at risk of losing their lives.

My Mom, Nikki has MS as well as my 5th grade teacher, her MS is affecting her spinal cord and I’m very nervous as to what can happen. I’ve seen my mom in pain many times and it upsetting to see the one you love the most in pain. My fear is that her condition might get worse and that she’ll end up losing the ability to move. I don’t want to see my mom like that, seeing what she goes though now is already unbearable. MS is a disease where the immune system eats away the protective cover for the nerves which can cause damage to the nerves obviously. MS affects more than 2.3 million people worldwide. MS can affect the Brain, the Spinal Cord and the Optic Nerves, In my mom case MS is affecting her Brain.

When Doctors did an MRI in 2008 they found out that she has white spots on her Brain and she has really bad Migraines, she sometimes feels very weak and has tingling in her foot things like that. They diagnosed her with MS. I was only 7 at the time and didn't really understand what the problem was with my mom, I just knew that she was very sick. Me, My Mom, and my little brother been taking part in fundraisers that they organize during the summer and if you take part in the action they will usually give you an orange cross with is the symbol of MS. I believe that this is Important for people to know because I think that learning about this information and sharing it to others can maybe have an effect on them and maybe one day they can find a cure for MS to help the millions of people who have it, such as my mom. They have many Medication to help treat MS but all of them are though IV and my mom actually goes to the doctor once a month and gets her Medicine. She has to take a lot of pills to help her with the symptoms.

I have many questions that I would hopefully get an answer to one day. I just wonder why and how people get MS and where does it comes from. I know that its not transferable so thats a good thing. Like my mom I sometimes get bad migraines and I went to doctors don't be worried they just said I need to wear my glasses because I'm straining my eyes to see. Im wondering what I could do to help my mom and help her though this. I left some Links at the bottom, hope you guys check them out.

Net Neutrality

what-is-net-neutrality-video-blocked

Net neutrality is the process in which internet companies have a direct connection to the use of internet that goes to customers of major companies who need access to internet. The people in control of this are the FCC. They work to try to promote fairness and equality for the internet companies and distributors. They are working on regulating the rules so that everyone agrees and benefits from them.If net Neutrality continues teens won’t be able to get onyo social media websites which is their life.

At the moment there are significant discrepancies between the ways things should be run and the way they are happening. One being the people in control of the internet flow, and the others being those trying to sell or give internet to their customers. The problem is that one side feels that they are being unfairly forced to pay for a service that should be given. Companies like Comcast and Verizon can if they want, slow down their internet services to companies like Netflix.

The unfair way of the system has caused each side to fight with the other. Because there is conflict, everyone is looking forward to the new rules to be announced soon. Tom Wheeler, chairman of the fcc, is going to make things even between the companies. This is known supposed to fix the issues that are currently taking place, so they both sides can be treated fairly. The FCC is going to make

Why did you make the slide look the way it does? What infulenced your decision making?

I made it look the way it does because I really like this quote and I think that it says alot about myself because I try and be somebody I'm not and its ok to be different. Nobody is perfect everyone has their flaws and difference and thats what I think makes us who we are. What influence my decision for this blog is that I can relate to it so that why I choose to write about something that relates to me and my problems.

Slide - Media Fluency

Posted by Siani Wilson in Technology- Freshmen - Hull - b1 on Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at 11:32 am
Why did you make the slide look the way it does?

I made the slide the way I did because I wear Hollister and I love their clothes. So put a whole bunch of the logo sign on my slide and some pictures of people wearing their clothes. I put I love Hollister because I do , I love their style , its like what I wear their clothes but I add my own style with their clothes.

What influenced your decision making?

What influenced my decision was that since I wear their clothes and I couldn't come up with anything else to do. I was going to do any kinds of clothes so I thought how about I do a name brand clothing line and I choose Hollister and choose pictures with people / models wearing their clothes.
