Abstract

I began by writing one story about Cherokee myths involving the sun and moon. My main character had to deal with living those myths and being affected by the moon. I began to write, but an obstacle I encountered was that I didn’t connect with my characters at all. I did too much research on the story and the plot, before getting to know the characters. The lack of passion I felt for the characters affected me severely. Eventually, I had to change the story to something else. It was changed to another idea that I was much more comfortable with. I learned how to make a story more independent. Because I had chosen a story that was originally a sequel, I feared that I’d have trouble writing it on its own. But I learned that just with a few minor tweaks, a story’s plot could be changed considerably. After deleting references from the past story that I loved, I realized that it helped build the story and give me more advantage in the plot. I also learned my strengths and weaknesses as a writer. I now know that I should not push my creativity too far within deadlines because it might kill the joy of writing. But I also can’t take two years to write something. So I need to find the middle line between giving myself deadlines, and writing freely.

Artifacts are soon coming.

Reflection

What I found most challenging in this project is surprisingly writing down the connections. I had a clear connection in my mind when I took the pictures, but it became very difficult to explain while I was actually typing it. I was actually expecting the finding pictures part more challenging, but I found myself quite easily finding connections through taking the pictures.
I took pictures by walking around my neighborhood and thinking about the main themes. If I made a connection between a theme and something I saw, I'd take a picture. I selected the images that I saw the connections more strongly in.
My favorite image is of the foreign Yu-Gi-Oh cards because I have recently become more open minded about a different card game. So when I learned a bit about these cards, it fascinated me how the exact same card in a different language could be worth more. In Germany, an english card is more valuable. That put something in perspective to me. How something not valuable at all to me, could be worth much more somewhere else.
I think globalization is pretty much the same everywhere. People just have to pause and actually look for it.
I learned how important it is to keep an eye out for things in my day to day life. Sometimes it all just becomes a blur, and it's difficult to distinguish small things. I also learned how globalization is everywhere, especially now in this age where communicating with someone across the world isn't as difficult.

Yadi Angeles - India vs. Mauritania

Posted by Yadierys Angeles in Globalization - Laufenberg on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at 12:10 pm
Reflection
My places were India and Mauritania. I basically just looked up all the information I could about India, the damage and climate change, hostile neighbors and friendly trade partners, and after having a good idea of what I thought about India, I looked up Mauritania and did the same thing.
The 5 point framework, was in one way simple. Because it was a direct way to be able to figure out a country in a "short" amount of time, but also made you look deeply into each category. Like looking into India. I found out India was not only hostile but also trade partners with China. That was really interesting. So the way it's broken into categories is really helpful because that way I can more easily compare India as a whole and through little groups.
If there was one thing I could change, I'd change the lack of information on Mauritania because I feel like I wasn't able to fully analyze and compare the two countries if I barely had any information on one.
I really didn't like that there was almost no information on Mauritania, but so much information on India. I wasn't sure whether to direct my anger towards being assigned this place, or towards the stereotypical ignorance that we have for Africa in general. Either way, I was quite angry and wasn't entirely sure what to do about it.

What If America Lost?

Posted by Yadierys Angeles in American History - Laufenberg on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at 4:38 pm
What I liked about this project was finding out more about my birthplace, Puerto Rico. I found some really interesting facts about it that I had never been told before. What was most challenging, though, was finding out how one thing might affect another. I spent hours just researching how America not having PR could affect the both of them. The most interesting fact I found was that the U.S tried to buy PR from Spain for 160 billion dollars. I was amazed at how a land, a culture, my own people could have a price tag. Everything is connected like a chain. One event happens, and it affects the entire thing. A person could decide to be at the wrong/right place at the wrong/right time and the entire world could change. One decision could create or make other lives including nature.

I'm not certain how this project could be improved. I didn't have any problems with the project itself. But if I had to do it over, I would probably focus a little more on America and how they're affected as opposed to only focusing on Puerto Rico.

This is the link to my website, I'm sorry it's a dropbox link.

Yadi Angeles Q4

Posted by Yadierys Angeles in Advanced Art - Hull on Monday, June 6, 2011 at 9:20 am

For this quarter, we took 200 pictures, made sculptures, copied a piece of art by a famous artist, drew a bike, and drew from observation. From all the work that I went through with the other classes, I couldn't quite focus on this one, so I didn't always put my all into every assignment. This was definitely my worse quarter, but I was able to get most of the assignments done.
In all the stress of my other classes, I was unable to do a picture from outside.

These are the unedited pictures from the 200 pictures I took:
Pre-edited flower gets thirsty

Pre-edited Gigi

And these are my final product:

I'd like to make a trumpet.

Before getting too much into it, here is a picture to help with the terms (if the image is too small, click on the link to see it bigger):

Trumpet-Anatomy1

A trumpet is horn-like, in which a person has to blow, but not air, into the mouthpiece. In the not air part, I mean that it's more a buzzing through lips than just blowing air. It is one big horn, with many different tubes connecting three valves and eventually the mouthpiece.

In changing a note, two things have to be done: the three valves on the trumpet can do many different combinations to form notes. In making a note higher or lower, a person must change the shape of their lips. A high note would be most easily produced with more closed lips and a little higher on the mouthpiece. A lower note would better be produced with more open lips on the middle of the mouthpiece.

I think maybe trumpets use hollowness to produce sounds. Maybe I could use this to my advantage in thinking of ways to make one.

All I can really say about waves is that they are formed from blowing into the trumpet. Maybe the way they change is by changing the loudness and the high/low notes.

Kingston, TN Coal Ash Spill

a. What went well?
The research and getting everything together.
b. What did not?
Talking about our research and deciding what to drop in terms of information.
c. What would you do differently next time?
I would speak up about the decisions for our infographic, because I feel that we could have done a better job in the visualness.
d. Specifically comment on the 10 tips for effective infographics -

Be Concise

Be Visual

Be Smarter

Be Transparent

Be Different

Be Accurate

Be Attractive

Be Varied

Be Gracious

Be Creative

Which of these areas did you excel in? Which were not so well represented? Why do you think some elements of design were easier or harder to include in the end product?

Some well represented were Transparent, Different, Accurate, and Varied. I feel like creatively we could have done much more and that we didn't add all the information that we could have so that things made more sense.

Q3 Artist's Statement-Yadi Angeles

Posted by Yadierys Angeles in Advanced Art - Hull on Monday, April 11, 2011 at 9:02 am

I love doing anything artsy because it helps me let out emotions through familiar hobbies. One of my favorite things to do is to look at all my older art pieces and see how I've improved.

I select themes through what interests me, and then what inspires me. I get more inspiration through my interests, and have a more enjoyable time overall. Although I don't always limit myself to things I like, I also keep an open mind to new things.

I'm now trying to challenge myself upon listening to "rules" for art. I usually go about the subject listening to myself only, and doing things to please me. So recently, I have allowed the "rules of real life" to try and enter my art pieces. It has been difficult, but I've become quite proud of about one or two pieces of the pictures shown below.

North and South - What if?

Posted by Yadierys Angeles in American History - Laufenberg on Monday, March 7, 2011 at 6:42 pm

http://www.schooltube.com/video/3bec9d4f89a96d7c9e35/North-and-South-Korea-NHD-Project?utm_source=site-email&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=site-notices

Why did you choose this topic?
I chose it because Newon gave me a good idea to go along with, and I was looking forward to making that idea.

Why did you choose this type of presentation format?
I felt that the best way to express our feelings of the government was by expressing it visually.

Where did you run into trouble with the project?
Editing and the bibliography. In editing, we had to work on it on my laptop and it was difficult when we split up the work because one person wouldn't always be with the other to do their part so some of the work had to be done at school for that person.

What went well with this project?
The recording went really well. We even got to do many things that weren't in the script and made it a lot better than if we just went along with the script.

If you had it to do over, what would you change about your decisions or your process?
I might have started the project a bit earlier, and I would have used less pictures. I might have found a way to balance out both images and videos.

What did you learn?
I learned about the North and South Korean government, and although we took a childlike view on their political views on each other, I will admit that maybe there are complicated things on this issue that I "can't understand."

Yadi Angeles Q2: Personalized December

Posted by Yadierys Angeles in Advanced Art - Hull on Monday, January 10, 2011 at 7:58 am

I've always loved art, and I spend a lot of my life working on drawings and paintings. But this quarter, a lot of holidays and special occasions for someone special to me were coming up. So I decided to make them a present instead of buying one, and to make something different from the field I'm most used to.     I usually pick themes of emotions that are most dominant in my life. I take my time when it comes to my work, partly because I want it to be done right, but mostly because my motivation is just the satisfaction of seeing my drawing skills become more refined as time passes. This quarter I have found that when I have a more common goal of someone else's happiness as opposed to just a "good" grade, I am better motivated to take on creative projects and to spend every free minute I have to work on it.     My first piece is a bracelet with a personalized charm. It is based on the person it was made for. He has a signature of himself as a little cartoon that he likes to sign his drawings with. So I took a copy of that signature and made it from metal from a can. I had decided on a can because I wanted it to be more permanent than paper or foam. When I first thought of a charm, my mind automatically went to metal, and the next thought was that my resources could easily get me a can and scissors that could cut through metal. I used a cloth to cover the back of it so that it won't cut through the skin, and that became a birthday present.

102_0118  1213101126-001215101106-00102_0119

My second piece was for the same person who happens to love video games and specifically Mario games.  So I made a personalized question block from cardboard paper using pictures from the internet and images from playing the game myself. I also cut out items that are usually found when a question block is hit: a star, a green/red mushroom, a feather, and a fire flower. After painting all of these items, I made it a little more personal inside the box, painting it my own way and making a story and picture. After glueing everything together, and putting all of the items inside the box, I added in chocolate coins. There were mess ups, and my biggest challenge was the time limit and the time the paint wanted to dry. But everything was finished the way my mind wanted it, and bringing joy to the person all of this was meant for brought a more accomplished and happy feeling inside me than any of my other work could have ever done.

MOVE: A Cult Unveiled

"MOVE: A Cult Unvelied" is a video focusing on the cult MOVE and the problems they had with the police. It tells two sides of a story with bad decisions and actions on both sides. It brings forth questions of trust for the government and a strange understanding for a cult the just had a strong way of expressing beliefs.

Tree of Life. Yadi Angeles

Posted by Yadierys Angeles in Advanced Art - Hull on Monday, November 8, 2010 at 7:28 am

In my Art class, I had a project that had to do with recycling. We had to use things that either were recyclables or weren't depending on what we wanted and make something out of them. I personally am a big fan of art, and I enjoy to do it because I feel it brings out my most creative side.

A lot of my themes are people. My best things to draw are girls. Since my theme is so common, I decided to try something new and make something more nature-like.

What I decided to do was a tree made out of tree materials. As I got into it, I started to realize all of the components that a tree goes through to become the piece of computer paper on my desk, or the cardboard box at my door. So I began to think that if I was going to make a tree, I might as well express what a lot of trees are going through when a human (i.e me) is involved. I made my lean, and made an axe to "cut" it down. So not only have I made a tree out of tree products, but I'm also trying to express the things that seem to be happening way too much to our nature.

My final product.

As our first project in art class, we had to make posters to put around the school. Our goal was to get other students to save bottle caps and give them to us so that we can use them in our art. However, I can't post a picture of my poster because I can't find it anywhere in the school.
