Hanna Dunakin Capstone

Posted by Hanna Dunakin in Capstone · Todd · Wed on Friday, May 19, 2017 at 8:21 am

As a CTE student my goal was to create a capstone that future CTE students could use, but also something that could involve the SLA community as a whole. Many students throughout the years I’ve been a CTE student have come up to me and asked if I could do a photoshoot for them, or a promo video, and sometimes I was just asked for guidance through Adobe Photoshop or Premiere. As much as I appreciated being asked and given so much trust for doing these things, I felt pressured because I was asked last minute, or just asked by so many people at a time. Not only that, but this was done on my free time, and never counted for my needed CTE hours. This capstone was created based on that struggle.

I created a website called CTE Next Door, which allows students to contact any CTE student for help concerning photography and/or video. A CTE student will not only help the other student, but the work that they do will count towards their hours, they’ll get extra practice, and not to mention, they’ll do it completely for free. For example, if you want pictures for a yearbook page, use CTE Next Door to contact a CTE student, they’ll reach out and see what you exactly want, and they’ll do it, just like that, at no charge. I’ve been working on this all year, fixing the glitches and mistakes, and I’ve finally created something that I’m very proud of and excited to share with the SLA community. Hopefully CTE Next Door will go beyond the SLA doors, but for now, it is strictly used for contact between SLA students and faculty.

I have always been interested in American Sign Language (ASL) for as long as I can remember. Many of my preschool teachers knew ASL and from time to time would teach us different signs. I also remember having books and and instructional video teaching ASL. For my capstone I wanted to learn a language. I was at first interested in relearning ASL, but found that it turned out quickly that I would much rather learn about the Deaf Community. In researching the about the Deaf Community, I learned about the two different sides of the Deaf Community, and how the invention of Cochlear Implants impacted the Deaf Community negatively. I continued learning more and more about Cochlear Implants and what they are and how they work. I listened to multiple podcasts in which reporters would interview people who had lost their hearing or were born deaf and who had Cochlear Implants about what their lives were like and how their lives changed due to getting Cochlear Implants. I also learned the other uses of cochlear implants or other technology instead of cochlear implants. I was able to interview three different people who either had Cochlear implants or were considered part of the deaf community themselves. Their opinions on the deaf community were very interesting and what they had to say about Cochlear Implants was very helpful. Overall I am very proud of the work I put into this capstone and am proud of the outcome.

Daouda Njie Capstone- Environmental Awareness

Posted by Daouda Njie in Capstone · Todd · Wed on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 10:39 pm

For the past 4 years that I have been at SLA and since its establishment not once have we ever considered recycling originally my capstone was to bring recycling to SLA but due to circumstances this goal of mine could not be accomplished. Reorienting myself towards a new goal I realized that the most important task is to inform others of their duty to recognize where they throw their trash, and to be mindful of their ecological footprint. I found this especially important during this time where our most important figures in government do not believe in climate change. With this in mind I set out to organize a three day event in which I would meet with the students of the environmental ourse and inform them different techniques to help conserve energy and ensure all trash they use can be reused further, and not tossed into a landfill. Furthermore during this time we constructed informational brochures which were to be passed out during the march for science on Earth Day, and collecting recycling on the campus of SLA. These activities were both designed to make people recognize see one just how one small school can greatly contribute to the tons of carbon emissions and other harmful chemicals given off during the bringing of trash. But also to again get them to change their lifestyles to please the Earth. During this entire process I greatly improved on organizing larger events. I also strengthened my ability to collaborate with classrooms to create pieces of valuable information available to the public, and present multiple presentations to others. With my project I also felt the most active I have ever been among the local community when taking part in the March for Science and talking to others about taking care of the Earth. Brandon Jones Capstone

For my Capstone, I was decided to apply my knowledge of our core values towards a topic that I've been interested in since childhood. I decided to conduct months of research so that I could learn the in's and out's of creating a Gameboy. However, I didn't want to just create any ordinary Gameboy, but instead one that didn't rely on cartridges to play games. Luckily I came across a Youtuber named Wermy and a website called Sudo Mod, who shared my interest. I watched and read tutorials and decided the best way for me to apply what I've learned was to create a manual that incorporates aspects of the videos I've watched and the tutorials I've read. I chose a manual because not only did it give me a sense of nostalgia, but it let me demonstrate the knowledge I gained. Prior to this project, I had very little experience with computers and programming. After completing this, I feel as though I can understand new and interesting concepts similar to the one that I worked with. Creating this manual has taught me the value of research and how it can be used to create great things. Chhievling Seng Capstone

I had done my capstone with TEVA Pharmaceuticals Internship. For my capstone, I had been giving out surveys to the current interns in order to assist my mentors on improving the program through positive and informative feedbacks. I had been giving out the surveys since the start of the school year and had been gathering them in order to evaluate what has been going well and what can be modified. The purpose of my capstone project is mainly to gather feedbacks and present them in a way that would allow my mentors to create new and more enriching activities for us current interns and new coming interns this summer. As a part of this project, I had created a website where I would use the survey responses to write about the overall experiences of the TEVA interns and my personal experience on collecting the surveys, analyzing the responses, and co-facilitating the Women in Stem Panel.

I always liked helping kids in need ever since I was a kid in need of help to guide me through the health problems I had as a kid growing up. My junior year I went up to Penn State for an event called Thon which is a 36 hour dance marathon that they host. I thought it was amazing what they were doing for these kids with childhood cancer and I wanted to help in anyway that I could. My sister that goes to Penn State, found out about a non-profit organization called Four diamonds which gives the opportunity for high school kids to host a mini-thon to raise money for childhood cancer.
For my capstone I chose to host a  mini-thon which is a small dance marathon that on last 4-6 hours since I know many kids with cancer and cancer runs in my family I  wanted to help as much as I can with helping these kids get the help they need. I raised awareness with my community by selling bracelets, necklaces, keychains, and lanyards. I also fundraised with Haish in which we got in contact with green field and had a dollar dress down to raise some money so that these children can get the help they need to make sure they will get the help they need that brings them a tomorrow.
I learned how to host an event and reach out to others when I needed. I learned how to have mentors who guided my through each process and made sure I was on the right track. I plan on taking this to college with me by continue raising money for them and hosting one at my college

Joel Johnson Capstone

My capstone involved homeless and donations. I joined a youth program at Project Home.  Project Home is an organization that helps tackle the challenges of homelessness in this city. I volunteered in their youth group in the summer of 2016. While at the program we accomplished a multitude of things. While I was there I learned about homelessness overall.  Each day we traveled Philadelphia volunteering at different places that sometimes had nothing to do with homelessness but was linked to helping prevent it. After the whole program, I decided that I wanted to do something similar for my capstone. Throughout the school year, I planned how I would execute that out. I decided that I would hold a one-week competition between advisories. Whoever donated the most amount of clothes would win a pizza party at the end. Throughout this process I learned time management, Outsourcing, working with others and public speaking.

Griffin Gallagher Capstone

For my capstone, I tasked myself with creating a self sustaining fish tank. I wanted to learn about aquatic ecosystems. For my final product, I created a website that explains how I made my tank, and the steps for you to make your very own “Forget Me Tank.” I decided to call my project the forget me tank because once you set it up, you can essentially “forget” about it. You do not need to clean it or add food to the tank, that all happens naturally through the organisms that live in it. In the beginning I got a little frustrated because I could not get my tank to survive. After a few more attempts I finally got my tank to last, and it's still surviving today. I have not had to do anything to the tank for over two months. If I were to redo this project, I would purchase a larger tank, so I could experiment with a more diverse ecosystem. My capstone taught me a lot about what goes on under water. It means a lot to me to learn about this because I would like to study marine biology in college. I believe that this project gave me an opportunity to further my love and knowledge for marine life and environments.

For my capstone project, I was able to travel to Cuba in the spring. During our trip, we were allowed to research a STEM related project of our choosing. For my topic, i decided to look at business and entrepreneurship in Cuba. My research questions were: How are entrepreneurs able to start-up in Cuba? What does entrepreneurship look like in Cuba? How are people able to brand their names in a socialist country? Because Cuba is a socialist country, many people believe that citizens aren't able to branch out to make money any other way. By going on this trip, I was able to destroy that myth, but I also learned of the many different opportunities for Cubans to make money. For my final project, I made a website detailing some of the most popular ways Cubans are able to make money. I was able to include pictures to show just how life changing this trip was.

DuBois Stewart Capstone

My capstone is on the Colored Girls Museum and my role in it. As a young black male in america, my mother thought it was pertinent that I consider my role as black male when coming up with my room. My job as a person i the colored girls museum was to curate a room in the museum. My room was called the colored boy’s room in the colored girls museum. In this installation I decided to do a project on the communication between colored girls and colored boys. After brainstorming with my mentor and curator of the colored girls museum, I came up with what I wanted to be in my room. I emailed all of the black seniors about the project and asked to each write an anonymous letter to the opposite sex about things they wouldn’t say in person. I then printed them out and posted them on the walls in my room. I also had a part where I partnered with someone from another school who had done a project the previous year that we displayed in my room. However, they weren’t able to finish in time and outside circumstances required me to shift my role in the museum to more of a tour guide and receptionist. Through the project i learned to collaborate with people in long distance relationships, research different methods to curating, inquire about the relationship between colored girls and colored boys, presented the museum to viewers, and reflected on the process after every week’s tour.
