Individual Learning Plans (ILP) are unique opportunities for students at Science Leadership Academy (SLA). It allows students to gain valuable experiences from the real world through different programs and internships. However, there is no central place for students to search for ILP opportunities which can make many students feel overwhelmed. My capstone is a web application that allows students to query the feedback provided by existing and current ILP students. It consists of three parts, a google form that allows existing and current ILP students to provide feedback, a google form for storing the feedback submitted by students, and finally, a local web application for students to search for feedback. The programming tools used for the web application are Notepad++ v7.5.1 and Chrome 96.0.4664.110. The programming languages used includes HTML, JavaScript, JavaScript libraries and code snippets (refer to annotated bibliography for a list of references). The setbacks for the web application are that it is not directly to a URL because it cannot use Google Sheet API that directly connects and query the data and that is not hosted on a server. It runs locally and has to be downloaded in order to be used. If possible, my future thoughts are to work to solve these problems so the web application can be published.

The final product of my capstone is a Ramadan guide I made into a website. My website includes essential questions, resources, and Quran and hadith proof to back up all of my statements.I was inspired to make this based on the fact that I felt only a few had really known what Ramadan was about. I would answer people’s questions , but I still felt that they were deprived of the answer they were looking for. Even among muslims, some are unaware of how to correctly participate in Ramadan. My initial goal was to finish this website earlier so it could be used during this Ramadan . However, I can still promote this website through school and it can always be used in the future.

Before I drew the design for the school co-mascot, I had no idea of what the mascot could look like. I did research on many different spacesuits that I could use for my mascot. After my research was done, I created a Google Survey where students could select what color the mascot should be and select a particular spacesuit that they like. 4 days later, I got what everybody voted for. I didn’t know what drawing style I wanted to go for, so I tried making an accurate drawing that resembled the image, but I ended up not liking it. The more I drew, the more conceptual drawings I came up with.

This isn’t just another mascot, I want every SLA student to look up to a mascot that they can see themselves in. If we have a Rocket mascot, why not have an Astronaut mascot as well? This mascot represents self-discovery. If astronauts are able to explore space, why can’t students explore and make their own personal space?

For my capstone project, I created a few art pieces that are a result of my time spent learning the ins and outs of Python and Python Turtle. I used coding to make art because I wanted to show others one of the many ways to use coding.

Since I was completely new to this and self-taught, I started with learning the building blocks of any code, the syntax. Then I learned simple shapes like circles, squares, and triangles. After a while, I was ready for my first project, Generative Art. It is a form of digital art that generates randomly and goes on forever if you don’t tell the code to end. The random things I developed were random triangles, squares, and circles of random colors. They would be in different places every time I would run the code. Finally, I was ready to make a project to display to others. This project would be much more complex than my previous project because I would have to code each shape individually and match the colors as well. My final project is Low Poly Art of pictures I have taken on my high school journey so far. Low Poly Art is made up of small simple shapes that make an image. I was inspired by mosaic art. I enjoyed the thought of many little different shapes coming together to build a piece of art.

My Capstone project was designed to consist of three parts. Two designed costumes, two completed costumes, and a screenplay in which the costumes would be worn by characters within. Through all of these things I wanted to explore the way that art methods as well as style fade in and out, and how older mediums are recycled over time. My costumes in particular are inspired by the elaborate details of Victorian era costumes. Though back then the costumes would have been used in party settings or possibly on stage, my CTE program requires my project to relate to film specifically hence the my aspired screenplay utilizing my costumes in picture.

Due to overestimation of my ability to use time wisely, I was only able to complete about half of what I set out to do. I will be presenting two designs for a costumes as well as one fully completed costume. Through these designs you can see how they were made for their greatest advantage to be on screen.

For my capstone project, I designed the costumes for the play “You, the jury”. This play is about a college student named Bill who is accused of theft by one of his employers, the audience members are the jurors and they get to decide whether he’s guilty or innocent.

I decided to do this for my capstone project because I love fashion and in the future, I would like to be part of the fashion industry. The fast fashion industry is responsible for 10% of global co2 emissions, in the future I would like to have my own sustainable clothing brand, ideally it will be affordable and all the clothes will be made with scrap fabric/clothes people don’t want anymore.

Most of the pieces used in the play were thrifted or borrowed from close friends/family members. My partner (Lily Weston) and I decided to thrift most of the pieces we used because we didn’t want to contribute to fast fashion since it negatively impacts the environment. We purchased most of the pieces from Philly AIDS Thrift, a store where people can donate clothes and other items to help organizations involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

For my capstone, I created a magazine that features local artists to promote their work and stories through photography and writing. My magazine Artfully Aware aims to challenge readers’ definitions of art and perceptions of the artist community. Its purpose is to inform readers about changes occurring in the art world through the individual experiences of small local artists who are witnessing their community shift and expand.

The process of constructing my magazine involved interviewing local artists at SLA, gathering work to share from them, and creating my own content as a photographer and writer to tell their stories. A large portion of my capstone’s process was shooting and editing an editorial style photoshoot with the artist whose capstone project is featured in the magazine. The interviews that I had with the artists influenced the articles I wrote, the first about a senior’s capstone on costume design and another about Covid’s impact on the future of art. Those interviews guided me in the direction I wanted my writing to take, but they also gave me a chance to have conversations with smaller artists who have big things to say.

The form of my capstone has significantly varied, but all versions have been centralized around combining music and engineering. I love making any form. Synthesizing an idea into a tangible product is one of the most joyful interactions imaginable, and music is where I most often find this joy. Because of that, the fundamental goal of my capstone is to “spread music.” At first, I believed the best way to accomplish that was through a digital program that would allow anyone to start writing original music quickly. However, when I tried to put this idea into practice, I swiftly realized its infeasibility as it would take no less than 10,000 lines of code to begin to make a semi-final product, and I could barely write 10. After seeing the impossibility of completing my audio program, I switched my capstone to something I have more experience with and is more intuitive to me, building a bass guitar. Making a bass was attractive to me not just because I would get a new bass out of it but also because it allowed me to understand an aspect of music that I previously had no insight into. My first step in this process was designing the bass using fusion 360 to create a profile. Once the design was finalized, I cut the wood, glued it together, messed it up, and had to cut it back apart, then glued it once more. I am continuing to make my bass and should be done soon.

How can I make a difference in the world? That’s the question that drove me during my capstone and I always wanted to do more with each interpretation of my capstone. For my Capstone, I created a video and website based on the homeless crisis currently taking place in America. I chose this topic because I wanted to make a difference with my capstone. I wanted to impact other people’s lives in some capacity. The journey to do this was long and hard but thinking realistically was the key to accomplishing this capstone. The first thing I had in mind was a bench of some kind for homeless people who are not in any shelter and are roaming in the city. But given the anti-homelessness and political discourse in the current political spectrum, I deemed that too hard to accomplish. So I looked elsewhere here you can see me emailing the participant at Project Home which introduces the core aspect of my project collaboration.

Collaboration with an organization elevated this Capstone into a more interactive project and allowed me more ways to be active in the real world. I continue to contact Project Home over a series of months until eventually, I settled with John Owen In-kind - Gift coordinator the overseer of volunteering. From there we schedule a meeting over zoom for talks for me to interview John Owens for my Video Capstone.

After the successful zoom meeting, I was granted permission to interview John Owens at Project Home. This really shows my ability to lead and have the initiative to direct my capstone in the direction I wanted it to go. From there I went to Project Home and interviewed John Owens where I asked him a series of questions that were tailored to the students of Science Leadership Academy. I wanted the future Students at Science Leadership Academy to be given the video for decades to come so they always know what they can do to help the world. And to benefit themselves specifically the Juniors and Sophomores who will need a LIP so that they can choose Project Home for that. To go above and Beyond the collaboration of my capstone project, I also made a website. This website is my own personal creation to raise awareness of the homeless crisis happening right now in Philadelphia. As well as a tutorial on how to directly volunteer at Project Home to make an immediate impact.

For my capstone, I wanted to find out how I improve the experience of volunteers at non profits using 3D printed using computer aided design that I learned in CTE Engineering, specifically a cloud-based 3D modeling software platform by the name of Fusion 360.

The goal was to create a design for a produce cutting tool for uses in a non-profit food distributor to the local homeless population for volunteers to use, named Manna on Main Street, located at 420 N 20th St, Philadelphia, PA 19130.

I had decided to bring other seniors to volunteer at Manna with me, however I encountered obstacles of the product I made being too small to function, and for the size to be able to properly be used as intended, the 3D printer would not allow for such size. When speaking to people at Manna, they informed me that foreign objects were not allowed in the kitchen, so that hindered the completion of my capstone in that regard.

I built 2 picnic tables one regular size and one for pre-schoolers and 2 benches a few months back for SLA. I have now furthered this idea by making another picnic table for the preschoolers I work for. it’s roughly the same design as the last table but smaller and better for the environment of the school. One thing I improved on in the second table was making sure to sand the boards prior to putting them together making the table safer for younger children. I also made sure all of the corners were dull so as no not to poke someone’s eye out if they fall. The main idea behind the benches was to be able I left something behind once I move on into college and the next part of my life. I found that in doing so I have given the communities something to enjoy. Even the steps that didn’t involve the tables, like the carwash, gave something to the community which I am proud of.

Inquiry- I first started this project on the basis that I love making things with my hands. I found it to be fun and relaxing and wanted to find ways to challenge what I have already made. So I asked myself how I could make this Picnic table better than it already is.
Research- To make the best picnic table possible I would have to research. I began researching the best materials and strategies for making them. I then realized this wasn’t enough, I would also have to find out what uses the table could be used for such as storage and comfort.

Collaboration- I have had many family members and friends help so far and are excited to have many more people help in the future.

Reflection- While in the moment and really up until writing this I thought of this as just some project to get me through high school, I now see it as my opportunity to give back to the people who have given so much to me.

Presentation- The final presentation of this project will be the picnic table I am creating, along with my outline of what I have done to pursue this goal of finishing. I would like to show SLA what I am capable of.

As a method of air-breathing propulsion, turbojet engines have the advantage of being highly efficient, but this comes at the cost of mechanical complexity and consequently high manufacturing price. With this in mind, the primary goal of this project was to explore the ways in which turbojet complexity could be reduced while still maintaining high levels of efficiency. This was done by researching the principles on which turbojets operated, identifying the causes of fuel efficiency as well as the conditions necessary for combustion. A design was hypothesized that utilized solid fuel with a weak chemical oxidizer, in theory allowing for compressor efficiency to be low while still achieving combustion. Because it was unknown whether a partial chemically-oxidized fuel could still be further oxidized by compressed air, several preliminary tests were conducted. The results showed that this was possible, supporting the feasibility of this engine and allowing the experiment to continue. The next step was to test whether a partially-oxidized fuel could solely sustain compressor start-up, as this would precede atmospheric oxidation and the combustion would be inherently weak. A solid-fuel turbine was designed and built, being designated as Prototype 1. In addition to testing deoxygenated compressor startup, Prototype 1 demonstrated whether the simple materials used in construction could withstand the extreme conditions of a turbojet engine. The results of the test revealed that the turbine accelerated to 6,300 RPM in 2.33 seconds, proving the feasibility of deoxygenated startup.

For my capstone project, I created resources to help new engineers in SLA get their footing. I started by labeling each machine with easy to read, laminated cards. Then, I focused on the laser cutter, which was about to endure the Rube Goldberg project, which uses it heavily. The guide that already existed was bare-bones, so I added a lot more detail. After the laser cutter guide was finished, I was unsure of what to do next. That’s when mr. Kamal introduced me to the wonderful world of 3D printing. Over a few months, I wrote tutorials for all four printer models in the shop. Each tutorial is connected to a 3D printing master document. It has a set of stats comparing each printer alongside recommended uses. For example, the Form 2 is arduous to use and clean, but the result is beautifully smooth. Alongside the master document, I printed the same model on each printer. I chose 3DBenchy as the example model, which is a small cartoon boat commonly used to calibrate printers. I then mounted them side by side. Using the mount, a beginner can scan the QR code and reference the example prints to decide which printer to use. Overall, this project was engaging the whole way through. I never thought I’d be interested in 3D printing; it always seemed too limited to be useful. I’m more excited than ever to learn more, and maybe even get a printer of my own in the future.

After creating Into The Basement, a short documentary about the Philly underground music scene in digital video class (with Leo Cohen, Nick Werner, Ellis Measley, and El Newburger), Nick and I were inspired to continue the project. The original plan was to basically make a longer documentary, interview more artists, and go more in depth about the scene and everything surrounding it; the good, the bad, and the ugly. That plan did not work out. So, now working alone, I resolved to take the documentary idea, and instead turn it into a magazine. With the help of a lot of people, including Nick, I was able to interview many more individuals involved in the underground music scene, not limited to artists/musicians, archivists, and sound engineers. After the hair-pulling process of fundraising, transcribing interview after interview, coming up with article topics, writing the articles, pulling quotes, doing more research, gathering photos, designing a layout, and making graphics, the magazine was finally here. Covering what the underground and the concept of ‘DIY’ actually means, the analysis of punk rock as a genre, the differences between the past and the current state of the scene, and more, as well as full interviews with artists who are able to give two different perspectives, I sincerely hope I’ve represented everything accurately and fairly(and also remained just the right amount of self-insertive). This is the digital version, and I’m in the process of getting the final product printed professionally. If you are curious, and would like to know more, I invite you all into the basement.

For my capstone project I chose to do a donation drive around my neighborhood and then use those donations that I collected to donate them to different organizations around the Philadelphia area. The reason why chose to do this as my capstone project is because around my house there’s an old man who often comes by our house because he has no place to live so our family normally gives him some clothes and food so I wanted to give back to the less fortunate by donating the clothes that I cannot wear or don’t like. In order to get a perspective on if people would donate or not I made a survey asking them if they donate and they don’t donate then why so. From that survey the results I got were that while people want to donate they can’t because either their schedule is too crowded or they don’t know where to donate. I then went around my neighborhood to collect donations from my neighbors. I did this every weekend for a month. I then went to different donation centers and donated the clothes that I got to those places.

Karston Singleton Capstone- OEC The Musical: Karston's Reflection

As a kid, I was fortunate enough to grow up with theatre. Because of this, I wanted to do a project that could help spread a former passion of mine. I decided to make a documentary on the theatre program at Overbrook Educational Center (OEC). OEC is an elementary/ middle school located in West Philadelphia. With their recently developed theatre program, I wanted to explore its effects on the youth that participated. Since March, I’ve been going to their rehearsals 2-3 times a week, documenting their production of High School Musical. The more I attended rehearsals, the more I fell in love with the stories I could tell about their experiences. I learned very quickly how theatre improved the characteristics of many of the participants. Some people grew more confident and others found a voice they didn’t know they had. With all of that in mind, I realized that making a documentary solely for this senior project wasn’t enough. Even after I am finished with my senior year, I will continue to produce the project as a full-length documentary. Every member of the cast deserves to have their voices heard about something they care about.

The video I prepared as my capstone is a reflection of my time thus far with them. It recaps what I learned and what I’m excited about in the future. It features interviews with a few of the cast members and ample observational footage. I hope you enjoy!

Clothing is a necessity, people don’t realize that when they purchase clothing it mostly uses non-renewable resources in the material and production. A large portion of clothing ends up in landfills and waste. For my capstone, I wanted to inform people about an environmental problem known as Fast Fashion Waste. I not only wanted to provide valuable information but also inspire people to be creative and learn new ways to help prevent global waste. I learned about waste creation and the multiple effects fast fashion has on our world. Fast fashion is economically, socially, and environmentally very harmful. I created an informative magazine filled with articles and fashionable outfits that are fully recycled. The articles include research I have done on fast fashion and how to prevent it. These articles are connected to photographs I took of friends in fully recycled outfits. There are multiple different sections of the magazine that demonstrate different ways to recycle clothing. The reader will learn about creative recycling methods as well as the overall effect fast fashion has on our environment

For my capstone, I wanted to study the relationship between film and music. Music and film are two things I enjoy and I have always been interested in the relationship between the two. I wanted to explore what techniques composers use to draw on specific emotions and connect their music to what is happening onscreen. My main goal was to get information about the way that people react to music, especially in the context of film. To accomplish this, I split my project into three different parts. First, I filmed a short video, with a couple of friends as actors. I intentionally shot this video in a way that was very ambiguous, without a clear story. The reason for this is the second part of my project: the music. I composed three different pieces of music with the goal of having each evoke a different mood or emotion. For the last part of my project, I sent three groups of people a version of my film, each with a different score. The video is exactly the same in all three versions, only the music changes. I then had each person fill out a form asking them what they thought about the tone and plot of my film. This allowed me to analyze the influence each particular piece of music had on my film.

For my capstone, my goal for my final product was to create a 3D printed model of one of my characters. I briefly worked with people to create a character. I did this by interviewing and collecting data about characters people want to see. I learned styles of art to draw this character. I learned manga style art because that’s where my style developed from and was my inspiration for this capstone. I communicated with people in order to create some backstory for the character. Over the course of a year, I spent time learning tools and techniques used for fusion360( a 3D modeling platform I created my 3D model on) and modeled my character using the techniques I’d learned. I also learned how to use two types of 3D printers in order to make my final product.

When we moved to the new building I couldn’t help but notice the bare walls. At the old building on 22nd and Arch, the walls were covered in paintings and student expression. 2 years after the move, after asbestos and after a pandemic the new school building still didn’t feel like SLA. In March I interviewed students, 100% of students interviewed said that a mural would make the new SLA building feel more like home. After that survey, I was sure that a mural had to be painted. The mural was painted by mostly seniors and freshmen. I designed it based on parts of the SLA experiences. The whales in the mural are based on my favorite mural in Philadelphia which was the whale mural near the Schuylkill River Trail. The mural ended up being 8ft by 10ft and was painted using acrylics on masonite panels. After lots of hard work by not only me but the SLA community, the mural was finished. I hope that this mural inspires other artists at SLA and helps make the new building truly feel like SLA. I also hope it shows what happens when people come together as a community to create something that will leave a legacy. Thank you to Braskem who helped fund this project.
