Goal #5: Fashion!

  • Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?
    -I spoke with a girl name Adriana. She was from Ecuador. I chose her because she was young like mean and she seemed interesting. 

  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?
    -I learned that she wore the same style of clothes like us. Which I thought it was interesting because she was from Ecuador so I expected her style to be different. I also learned that she doesn't have the same stores as us over here in the USA. 

  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?
    -Well, my goal was to talk about fashion. It kinda worked but at the same time, the conversation went to a whole different project. So I don't really know if this was considered helping me achieve my goals?

  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?
    -I think I did well on asking her questions about things that described her. I didn't want to talk about me during the whole conversation.

  • What specifically do you need to improve on? 
    -I think I'm doing great!

Conversation Question: What is the politics and government structure of Costa Rica like?


Pre-Conversation:

•  What will be your topic of conversation be?

I will investigate about the politics and government of and the role it plays in people's lives.


•  What are 5 questions related to your conversation goal that you can think of ahead of time to ask your partner?

1. How many states/provinces are in Costa Rica?

2. What are the different political parties in your country?

3. How are the people represented?

4. How often are elections held?

5. How does the government help improve the lives of people?


•  What are you looking forward to about this conversation?

I am looking forward to learning about the role that the government plays in the lives of the people. This include how the government helps the poor and even student who want to go to university.


•  What are you nervous about?

I am not nervous about anything since this is my fourth blog post and I have had a lot of time to practice and improve my skills. I am prepared with all of my questions, so there is nothing to be nervous about.

Reflection:

• Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?

I spoke with Carlos Huertas and I chose him because he lives in Costa Rica. I also choose him because of his age. Carlos is 38 years old and this means that he might know more about the government and its polices that a younger person.

• What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

I learned that there are 7 provinces in Costa Rica and Carlos lives in San José, which is the name of the province and the capital city. The name of the other provinces are Alajuela, Heredia, Cartago, Guanacaste, Puntarenass and Limon. San José is located in the center of the country. There are many different political parties in Costa Rica. The main ones are the Liberacion Nacional, Partido Accion Ciudadana, Movimimento Libertario, PUS and the PASE. The political system is largely bipartisan and Congress is made up of multiple parties. Carlos also told me that election are help every 4 years in Costa Rica. The government has many programs to help its citizens like such as student loans to student so they can go to university and housing programs. There are also food stamps and employment programs run by the government. 

• How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

I was able to learn about a topic hat I was interested in while at the same time sharing information about the government of the United States. Carlos was also very enthusiastic about the conversation and this helped to drive the conversation even more. I learned a lot of new vocabulary and I got to use vocabulary that I never even knew I had. I also had to substitute words that I wanted to say with words that I actually knew how to say in spanish.

• What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

I did not use a translator during the conversation. I used my 5 questions that I had prepared before hand and these questions helped to drive the conversation. I was also able to sustain the conversation for well over 5 minutes and ended up talking to Carlos for over 15 minutes. This was not something that I could have done before so I was very proud of this achievement. 

• What specifically do you need to improve on?

I think that I need to respond more quickly during the conversation. This conversation was hard because I had to think hard about what I wanted to say and the vocabulary that I had to use. I also had to think of words that I could use as a substitution for words that I did not know.

My partner's name was Kike Santiago from Mexico. We spoke in Spanish over video chat and he also spoke English very well, so if I had a question I would send it to him over a text chat. We did drills of conjugation because I was having problems with saying things in the future tense when I would mean the past tense. I was happy because Kike knew a lot of English and if he could see me struggling he would help but not give me the answer.

What did you learn about your partner? 

I learned that Kike lives in Mexico and completed his studies as a naval engineer. He lives with his mother and grandmother in a house and takes care of the both of them. He also works at a shipyard and because of his studies he has more flexibility with his job than everyone else.

What did you learn from them?

I learned that a lot of the music that I listen to in America they listen to as well. The thing is that I think the music takes a little while longer to get to them. I also learned how to conjugate irregular verbs in the future, present and past.

What did you learn about yourself?

I learned that when I begin to screw up a bit, I mess up things that I already know because I get nervous.

What were you surprised about?

I was surprised that we had such a long conversation but I was also glad that we got the opportunity to talk and that he agreed to help me out.

What are you proud of?

I'm proud that I was able to hold a conversation in Spanish for 30 minutes. I struggled a little bit I was surprised and happy with myself.

En El Tiempo de Las Mariposas- Gina y Estefan

Mi Reseña(Gina):

La película, ‘En el Tiempo de las Mariposas’ era un cuento sobre la vidas de tres hermanas con la coraje a estan en contra del dictador, Trujillo. En el tiempo de la película, La República Dominicana era controlado por el Presidente Trujillo por 31 años. Él mantiene su poder con fuerza, terror y tortura. Cuando una mujer, Minerva Mirabal y sus hermanas luchado en contra de el régimen de Trujillo, muchas personas en el país apoyaron las hermanas y comenzaron un revolución derrumbar Trujillo.

La película ha mostrada como las hermanas Mirabal se convirtió en las mariposas. Me gusta la película mucho porque  soy una feminista y el cuento era sobre fuertes mujeres trabajando por el movimiento en contra de Trujillo. El sinópsis de la película es que, una niña llamada Minerva y sus hermanas viven en una granja con sus padres. Uno diá, la niña dice que ella no quiere vivir en la granja por siempre, pero, ella quiere asistir escuela y usar sus habilidades en el mundo verdadero. Entonces, cuando ella asistía escuela, ella conoció una amiga que dice que el mundo es no justo y es porque Trujillo.

Despues ella completa escuela, ella fue a su casa y conoció un hombre, Lio, y ella enamoró. Lio mostrada Minerva el movimiento en contra de Trujillo y inspiró ella en activismo. Porque Lio era un activista en en contra de Trujillo, su nombre era en el periódico es una amenaza. Entonces, Lio salió Minerva, pero el escribió ella cartas. Mientras Lio era estaba lejos, Minerva fue invitada a una fiesta por Trujillo.

A las fiesta, Trujillo y Minerva bailaron y cuando Trujillo tocó el trasero de Minevra, ella golpeó él. Despues la fiesta, la policia de Trujillo tomaron el padre de Minerva y torturaron él hasta Minerva hizo un trato con Trujillo. Finalmente, el padre de Minerva murió. Luego, porque la muerte de su padre y su novio Lio, Minerva y sus hermanas se convirtieron activistas en contra de Trujillo y su régimen. Porque sus activismo, las hermanas tenían el nombre, ‘Las Mariposas’. Aunque la policia de Trujillo finalmente mataron las hermanas Mirabal, el cuento de ‘Las Mariposas’ todavía está vivo.  ¡Vivan las mariposas!

Desde mi punto vista, la actuación en la película era muy bueno. Especialmente me gusta la actuación de Salma Hayek porque ella era la estrella de la pelicula. Tambien, la guión de la película era fantastico porque yo era interesaba mucho. Yo aprendí mucho sobre la historia de La República Dominicana, el régimen de Trujillo y el cuento de las hermanas Mirabal, ‘Las Mariposas’. En total, me gusta la unidad mucha.


Resena de Estefan-

Para mi el actuado en la película fue un poco dramatico y no ensenaron lo que actualmente era el problema durante ese tiempo. Casi no encieron a hablaron sobre los haitianos y como Trujillo no los queria en la Repùblica Dominicana. yo creo que habia unas escenas donde los actores puederon actuar mejor, por ejemplo en al escena donde le pego el padre de minerva a minerva. la película seria mejor si tuviera mas información sobre las haitianos o mas sobre otra gente que ayuda en la revolución entonces eso haria la película mas interesante.

Desde mi punto de vista la película queria ser mas sobre el amor entre una mujer y un hombre, casi no habia information sobre lo que actualmente paso durante.

Trujillo era un hombre muy malo a el solo le importaba el mismo el metia mucha gente inocente en la carcel  o los mataba. en esta unidad yo aprendi sobre las hermanas Mirabal.

Casi hay películas donde las mujeres tienen poder o son valientes para imponerse a un hombre. Me gusta mucha que las hermanas pueden sacar a el general Trujillo de su presidencia apeser que las mato. Sin las hermanas Mirabal Trujillo alomejor nunca se qutaria hasta que se muriera.
La que tuvo la parte mas Grande en que trujillo se fue de el presidente fue minerva porque ella hico a trujillo dejar la ir a las escuela para ser abogada y lo hico que dejara su padre irce de la carcel. La película le falla de mucho, personalmente yo nunca la pagaria para verla en las películas. Pero si se le ensayo a mis amigos porque te dice la historia de las hermanas.

Parte:  Cuando Minerva dice que ella quiere asistir escuela.

Explicación : Nosotros elegimos la canción porque es muy inspiradora y tiene un niño cantando que él puede ser alguna cosa él quiere. En esta parte, Minerva quiere asistir escuela porque ella quiere ser un abogado. Aunque Minerva es muy inteligente,su padre no quiere ella asistir escuela porque él quiere sus hijas en la casa para de la granja. A pesar de que la padre no quiere Minerva asistir escuela, las hermanas de Minerva apoyaron mucho y era felíz para ella. La madre de Minerva quiere su hija estar felíz y intentó mostraba que escuela es buena para niñas y Minerva debería asistia. La canción es perfecta para esta parte porque el niño saben que él pueden ser alguna cosa él quiere y Minerva sabe tambien.

Canción: Para siempre- Little Dragon

Parte: Cuando ella conoció Lio y nadaba

Explicación : Elegimos la canción porque en esta parte, Minerva y Lio son hablando y ellos les gusta el uno del otro mucho. En esta parte, Lio y Minerva nadaron en un rio. Las hermanas de Minerva eran felíz para ella. Pero, la madre y la padre de Minerva eran no felíz sobre la relación de Minerva y Lio porque él era un activista. Porque el régimen de Trujillo era muy estricto, activismo era muy peligroso porque la policia de Trujillo a veces torturaron personas que son en contra de el régimen. Aunque las padres de Minerva no les gustan Lio, Minerva todavía habló con Lio y le gusta él. Minerva era interesaba en Lio y no cuida sobre el activismo, aunque es muy importante. La canción Para Siempre por Little Dragon es sobre un mujer enamorada y quiere el sentimiento a dura para siempre. Yo pienso en esta parte en la película, Minerva quiere su sentimientos para Lio a dura para siempre y entonces para mi la canción es perfecta.

Canción: Baila con el diablo- breaking Benjamin

Parte: Cuando ella bailando con Trujillo

Explicación:

La canción es para esta parte porque cuando Minerva es bailando con Trujillo, ella tenía muchos sentimientos diferentes pero es no feliz. Así lo veo, la canción tiene las emociones perfectamente. La canción es llamado bailar con el diablo, y es una metáfora para el baile entre de Minerva y Trujillo especialmente porque la otro nombre de Trujillo es el diablo.Cuando ella era bailando con Trujillo, él tocó el trasero de Minerva y era muy grosero a ella y luego, el tenía su policia torturar el padre de Minerva. Porque las acciones de Trujillo, él es igual a un diablo y la canción es bien para esta parte.

Parte: Cuando la papa de Minerva murió

Explicación:

Esta parte es muy triste porque Minerva tenía un tiempo difícil con la pasada de su padre. Minerva era muy deprimida y no quiere hacer nada. Ella era estaba en su cama mucho y no quiere hablar con alguna persona porque ella tenía mucho dolor y resentimiento. Elegimos la canción porque es muy triste y emocional. Nos gusta la canción para esta parte porque el piano es muy suave y las palabras son sobre una persona con dolor porque un querido y es igual a Minerva y su dolor.

Canción:Fuerza, coraje y sabuduría- India Aire

Parte: Cuando ella asistía a la universidad

Explicación: 

En esta parte, Minerva estaba a las la universidad de ley después el muerte de su padre.Porque ella tenía un acuerdo con Trujillo, ella asistió la universidad de ley. Ella era el primero mujer asistir la universidad de ley en la República Dominicana. Elegimos la canción porque es sobre una mujer continua su vida con la ayuda de fuerza, coraje y sabiduría. Así lo veo, la canción es buena por esta parte porque Minerva necesita la fuerza, coraje y sabiduría continuar despues el dolor en su vida.

Explicación:

Elegimos la canción porque es sobre una persona salió y la mensaje es igual a esta parte porque la hermana de minerva es salir su casa luchar para el revolución en contra de Trujillo.

Parte: Cuando murieron las hermanas Mirabales 

Explicación:

La canción es muy triste y a mi me hace pensar sobre cosas tristes, eso es porque yo lo elegí porque es perfecta por la parte.  Especialmente las mariposas no vivan ahora.
