Being a Bee

Kilah Kemp

Being a bee is not always as easy as it may seem, you probably thinnk being a bee is just loads of friends, you get to meet the queen and all the honey you can eat, but there are bad parts one you are very, very tiny you got people always trying get you watch out because the right SWAT from a human can kill you instantly.  I am Important, and I am smart and I am the kindest person you will ever meet. But don’t bee fooled by my small size my heart is as big as the world. I am a little bee but my stinger pacts a punch. I have always been the smallest bee in the hive but I am the biggest when it comes to IMAGINATION. I always dreamed of a world outside of this hive all the people I can meet I the flowers I can pollinate all the honey I can help make. I want to be the first bee to go to the moon. I want to see the stars; I want to go wherever whenever. It’s just little ole me the smallest honeybee. I haven’t even gone through beeberty yet. I can’t BUZZ correctly my stinger isn’t even fully developed yet. But one day I will get there I will be a big bee in the small little hive. I believe in myself and I am not going to let any one stop me, I am imaginative I am the best darn bee you ever saw and I am going to continue to be that bee forever. I’m not going to even let the queen stop me. I want to be on TV. I want to be the first bee actor ever to be on broad way or the Hollywood walk of fame. I want to be important and I am important. I am imaginative something most people know nothing of. Until I get bigger I will imagine and I will be little ole me the smallest honeybee.

All about ME slide

In this Slide I choose these images because I feel they represent me. Such as the Atom image in far right corner. I choose this because i enjoy science. I also choose the Playstation icon because i enjoy video games. In the Middle I wrote "live life to the fullest" that is just one of the mottos i live by. The second one says "Be yourself no matter what". I wrote these mottos because they help get through my daily life. On the right and left corners at the top are my favorite music groups. Also the image on the far right top corner has money and hearts, something I also base my daily life on. The other images are just my favorite stores to shop at when I am at the mall. To top it all off I wrote Science leadership academy in fancy to show how much I love this school.

Lobbying Post #3

For my lobbying topic, this is not a good year. I feel like youths are still bending the curfew rules and parents do not care much because if they did, they would be sure their children are in by 9pm. I am not disappointed by the face that it isn't a good year for this law because the law is too strict. For most teens, at 9pm is when they get that time to themselves to finally get out of the house and what this law is saying is that they will not be able to hang out. YES, I think there should be curfew laws but a 9pm curfew is outrageous. I do not feel in anyway bad about how this law is being ignored. I do not really see any officials who are so much for my lobbying idea which means I may  possibly have to talk to an official and get my idea out there and find others who agree. As listed in my last blog, there are a few officials who are on this curfew committee who may possibly be able to help me but Mayor Nutter is probably the one I would really need to talk to and get this idea into his head since he is the biggest enforcer of this law. A couple people are working on the curfew lobbying topic but I'm not too sure if their ideas are like mines. One of them says there should not be a curfew law which I am in the middle about but maybe we could work together and share ideas. I feel like I can influence the youth and parents to uphold their responsibilities which is to make sure children are in the house by 12:30pm every day.  The next meeting for city rules is November 30th 2011 at 10am which I'm sure the curfew laws will be a big topic of discussion.

M.B.Z. vs. Clinton

Whether courts can enforce a federal statute governing how the Secretary of State is to record the birthplace of American citizens on passports and related documents; and whether a federal law instructing the Secretary of State, if requested to do so, to record the birthplace of U.S. citizens born in Jerusalem as Israel interferes with the President's authority under the Constitution to recognize foreign nations. Some facts about this is even though Israel was declared a state in 1948, the U.S. government has declined to recognize Jerusalem as the capital, deeming this a question to be resolved through diplomacy. In 2002, Congress passed a law that provided that "for purposes of the registration of birth … or issuance of a passport of a United States citizen born in the city of Jerusalem, the Secretary (of State) shall, upon request … record the place of birth as Israel." A passport is not today considered a diplomatic statement; it's an identification of a person in order to enable him to travel abroad. The petitioner in the case, M.B.Z., was born in Jerusalem to U.S.-citizen parents in 2002.  Although his parents asked the State Department to designate Israel as their son’s place of birth on his passport, it declined to do so despite Congress’s command to the contrary. When the parents took the issue to the courts, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit dismissed their claim on the ground that it raised a nonjusticiable political question:  the court of appeals explained that the “judiciary has no authority to order the Executive Branch to change the nation’s foreign policy” with respect to whether Jerusalem is part of Israel.

Police are not enforcing laws and parents are still not taking responsibility for their children’s actions. This isn’t a good year in areas of Philadelphia because of this problem. As of now many elected officials have indicated that they are trying to figure out a solution for this problem without stepping their boundaries. Many people protest that parents are the only ones who can be accountable for this and the government is starting to become too personal when it comes to their lives. This law was signed by Mayor Nutter on November 14, 2011 and many people are not pleased with this. Many believe that we should be more focused on our economy and money for these children to help keep them out of trouble, not curfew.

The problem here is, how can you stop poverty? Where to start? Many people believe that in order to stop poverty, and violence is to educate and inspire many children, young adults and even adults. About a year ago, I emailed people who worked for ANNA C. VERNA about finding solutions to this problem. The ONLY answer I was given was, “we cannot force parents to do their job, we cannot force our morals onto someone else’s household. But we can give these children a better education.” After, I decided to go to South Philadelphia high school and talk to the special education teacher, Mrs. DeAngelo-Leary. There she interviewed many students and asked them about their views on life. Many replied that there isn’t anything beyond the world they live in (living in poverty, getting pregnant etc.) Many of them attended South Philadelphia High because no one really cared about their children whereabouts or education.

According to philly.com Many educators received constant pressure and were urged by administrators to not report any incidents that occur in schools. This is part of the problem. Many people aren't willing to take responsibility. Some people decide to handle situations differently in different schools, therefore it makes it difficult to tackle the situation and fix it.

There is nothing we can do about this situation beside promote education, and try to point in the correct direction. We can only be a positive influence and try to inspire these children and young adults to be something or someone better.

Lobbying Post #3

My lobbying topic, The Patriot Act, has had a pretty interesting year. Earlier this year The New York Times wrote about how Congress voted to have extensions made to three provisions of the law. And what was passed within them.
Which you can see more of here:
http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/subjects/u/usa_patriot_act/index.html

But just recently though The Patriot Act was talked about during the Republican Presidential Debate. Mostly by Newt Gungrich and Ron Paul. Newt Gungrich saying ""If you're trying to find somebody who may have a nuclear weapon they are trying to bring into an American city, you need every tool available. The dangers are literally that great." to Ron Paul stating "I have a personal belief that you never have to give up liberty for security. You can still provide security without sacrificing our Bill of Rights,".

Which you can see more of here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeS1bGw0RdM

It was interesting watching the Presidential Debate and listening to them talk about their views on The Patriot Act. I saw how different most of their views were significantly different from each other and got me thinking that, depending on who gets elected president, the election itself is going to have a huge effect on The Patriot Act and what will happen to it. So lately The Patriot Act has been getting a lot of attention and I do not expect it to fade anytime soon.

Lobbying BlogPost #3

After school programs are being shut down and closed because of budget cuts to schools and school districts around the country forcing children to seclude themselves from active play and stay inside. There have been many movements around the country to reverse this trend of physical play being boring and something of the past with help from programs like play60 which is involved with the NFL and has been directly been given help by Michele Obama and Jill Biden who have made progress in getting more and more school districts across the country involved in getting these programs back up and running so that more and more children can have access to outdoor spaces and places to play rather than being inside; this also correlates to mrs. Obamas idea of having a healthier America and a America without obesity

My issue still stays at the idea of sports and after school programs in general being cut to save money for the school and how these programs are crucial in getting and keeping kids active but also keeping children from getting in trouble outside of school. At this point I would have to directly speak with people involved in programs like play60 and other organizations that are around and trying to get these programs back but also trying to address the issue of children being active and staying active. I wanted to directly focus on schools in communities where there isn't much happening outside or around the school because in more developed neighborhoods you don't see these programs being cut because the community and the area is doing fine itself particularly the school system but by looking at school systems in lets say small communities or Philadelphia for example because of all the budget cuts we can see and address the problem directly.

Lobbying Pro Patient Protection and Affordable Care Law #3

hcan_480

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Law is coming into play more
and more as pieces of the law continue to pass. As of Oct. 1st, The
Independent Payment Advisory Board, a group dedicated to finding ways to
rid the medicare system of waste and making it more efficient, began to
receive funding. While in the coming year, many new affects of the law
will begin to come in to play, such as promoting health providers to
group for more efficient care and requiring  government health
organizations to record statistic on racial and economic groups
receiving health care in order to better organize their efforts. A
timeline of the implementation of the act can be found in the link here.

Having been dubbed "Obamacare" the law has been receiving relatively
positive feedbacks amongst the public. In response, cnn polls have resin
in support towards the law although 52% still want to repeal. This is a
6% drop from the last poll and from a high of 59% last march. As more
affect of the law are being felt are beginning to judge it fairly. Most
people still don't know what's in the bill as most are blinded by the
heavy allegations of it might not being constitutional.

"Personhood" BLOG POST #3

Personhood_Begins_at_Concep
Personhood_Begins_at_Concep
On Tuesday November 08, 2011 Mississippi voters defeated a ballot initiative that would've declared life begins at conception. The so-called "personhood" initiative was rejected by more than 55 percent of voters. they felt as tho you would have to have any of these to make an acception to kill what has been created. you would have had to gained an Disease, or  rape, incest not counting as exceptions. now if killing took place and none of these were present then there would have been a  Felonies for everyone no exceptions. but because the law was not passed you can still get abortions and there is no harm being done. now i do believe that they "personhood" is not going to stop there and will keep going till they get what they want and its band because they are going to do what they feel is rite.

Lobbying Lopic #3-Fracking!

So far this is an okay year for the people who are saying Frack NO! In Philadelphia we have had a rally, passing out buttons and bumper stickers, gettin the word out with information flyers and pamphlets, etc. but we have not yet reached out goal. Fracking has not come to a complete hault yet, be we are working toward it every step of the way. Working harder and harder so that our water can stay as clean as possible. We are trying to stay as far away from the results the people in the movie-documentary "Gasland

Below is a shocking video of the effects of fracking on local drinking waters.
In order to have a great compacting outcome We need to contact all the oil companies who participate in Fracking. We could also have Senator Vincent Hughes who could guide us in contacting the right people and be by our side with every step of the way with making change.
Hughes
Hughes
We can influence citizens of the community to join us in the movement against fracking in general and show them graphics and videos about what it can do to their drinking water.

Shopping slide

The way I made my slide was to make people look. The pictures represent stores I like to shop it and they way I arranged them was in a collage form, I chose this because I liked they way it looked, and it’s very creative. I let some of the pictures over flow off the page, I got the inspiration from seeing the IKEA bill bored. I did not really have a color seam because I just did not think it would look right the background ties it all together.

Fracking: Lobbying Blog Post #3

r-EPA-FRACKING-FLUIDS-large570
r-EPA-FRACKING-FLUIDS-large570
This is actually a very good year for lobbying against tracking. It is actually surprising how well it is going. Awareness of the issue is rising at a very fast rate. More and more people are being affected by fracking and the hardships that it is putting down on them. More people are complaining about water contamination, sickness, and unemployment (as I mentioned n the first blog post) and people are taking action. Fracking is being debated in many places. Recently, in Burmingham fracking was debated in a three hour hearing in which more than 1000 people attended, and only 63 people got to contribute to the decision against fracking. This hearing was one of eight that have happened so far. On top of that, hours before the actual hearing, the crowd rallied against fracking. Some opponents are certain companies and coalitions that are trying to say that all the claims about fracking having negative impacts are all overblown and over-exaggerated. Companies also try to say that fracking has been used safely for years and their is a small chance it has negative affects. Nevertheless, many citizens are fighting against fracking and trying to get their points across.

Something that is huge in the lobbying against franking topic is just a day ago the Environmental Protection Agency started talking about plans to start developing rules and regulations that require all makers/processors of chemicals used in the oil/gas industry to submit all records on those chemicals. On top of that, they also have to submit health/safety studies on those specific chemicals. The whole thing started with concern on fracking fluid and the chemicals that it is made up of. The EPA also wants specifications on fracking fluid especially to help come to certain conclusions. This is great because it not only will give us more information on the chemicals used in certain fluids, but their will be much more oversight on things such as fracking fluid and may conclude fracking in many areas. Another thing is other areas and states are starting to take action and finally make actual decisions on fracking. There is a decision soon to come from a debate in which fracking would be stopped in the Delaware River Basin. This is good because once one place stops fracking, others may follow.

There is definitely some key players that would be essential to the outcome. One of those people would be Mayor Nutter because it would definitely increase support. His support is very powerful. Also having my Pennsylvania Senate Christine Tartaglione and my House of Representative John Sabatina would increase support especially since they already have had some impact on this subject. Many people are working on this especially some government officials and groups/citizens in support for lobbying against fracking. There are many hearings coming up in the next month or so so that will help clear things up and also the EPA rule that I mentioned a bit earlier will definitely have a good impact in which it would clear up more on the true affect of fracking and whether it should be stopped. Specific dates are yet to be announced, but lobbying against fracking is really heading in the right direction.

Betty Louis: Q2 Media Fluency

Of course just by looking at my slide you obviously can guess that I LOOOOVVEEEE Christmas! I choose to put on my slide the subject of Christmas because it my favorite holiday of the year and one of my upcoming events that I am really excited about. The big words that I put in my slide represent that first few words that come to mind when I think of Christmas. The main word I put in the biggest size is family because for me it is the whole point of Christmas. I used the colors red and green because well as you all know they are the main colors of Christmas. I also put pictures of me with family/friends from past Christmas to show you what I look like and to also have a connection to the words family and love in my slide. In doing this project I have learned many things such as how to make the slide eye-catching to a point where you just go “that is just more than great!” You have to make it simple but not to simple that it seems baby-ish. Just simple enough for each and everyone of the audience to understand what you are trying to present to them. You must also make it seem fun and colorful with NOO paragraphs or long bullet points. With stuff like that people are just going to walk away from your slide or turn the other way. So if you want your slide or poster to be heard don’t do that. Put lots of pictures of just one picture that you think and edit it to make it look visual. Meaning it has be noticed that your eyes can’t stop looking or trailing around it. Like making the text of your words really big.  Use up practically all the space and balance out the use of objects in that slide. Also “don’t be afraid to bleed” meaning don’t be scared to allow some of the picture(s) in the slide to appear like it come off the edge to make it seem like it can’t fit. That’s actually good because with it looking like it can’t fit makes it seems like its really big and with things really big allows the slide to be more interesting. All of these things I did.

¡Hola Carlos!

Querido Carlos,
¡Hola! ¿Qué tal? Soy Melanie y tengo catorce años. Vivo en Filadelfia con mi familia. Es una ciudad bastante grande entre la ciudad de Nueva York y la capital. Es famoso por sus "cheesesteaks". It's diverso. La gente es muy culta. Se conoce como "La Ciudad de Amor Fraternal". Sebastian y Sean es mi hermanos y Mackenzie es mi hermana. Mackenzie es muy bonita. Soy la mayor. Mi cumpleaños es el ocho de Julio. Estoy muy cansado. ¿Y tu? Hace mucho mucho frio. ¿Qué tiempo hace en Maracaibo?
Me encanta escuchar en musica y leer. Me encanta la banda Mayday Parade. Uf, no me gusta nada mainstream musica. Me gusta estar de vago con mi amigos y sufear la red.  ¿Y a ti?
¡Adios!

Con cariño,
Melanie
