Kuzonza Barnes: Wisdom and Work

My goal for this podcast was to get an idea and view on my mother's opinion of work and what it means to have had work or to work in general. Although she does not work a paid job, I was interested in her definition and how it shaped her and what it meant not only as someone who worked in the past but even as a mother. I also wanted to get her opinions about work, wisdom, and satisfaction and how you need both to balance out each other out. During this project, there were a lot of things that went wrong and a lot of things that went well. The things that went well, was getting my mom to not only cooperate  but also her engaging answers, that allowed me to learn even more than I thought I knew about her. It was a really enjoyable thing to interview her and I enjoyed it. However, some things that went wrong was editing and that entire process. I stressed a lot but in the end I am proud with my finished product.

Sandra Watson Podcast

My goals for this project was to create a meaningful podcast about the misconception of house work and people who work in the home. I deleted those misconceptions by talking to mom who has been a house wife or her words a domestic engineer all her life. The thing I stuggled with in making this podcast was trimming and uploading. i learned that making a podcast isn't easy and getting your person to warm up and make it sound like a regular conversation is quite hard but in this process I learned  how to make compelling questions and how to  take major ideas and themes from simple conversations that  could lead to much bigger things

Fatoumata Camara Interview

My central idea was death and how it impacts people in different ways. Death can either change a person about how they live life and make them love it more or put people in dark places. In my interview I interviewed 2 of my cousins who talked about death and how it can impact a person really quickly. I had a lot of of struggles because I couldnt find a central idea and soundtrap wasnt working. After getting help it all worked out in the end !

Imani Williams podcast

Introduction- My goal for this interview was to communicate the importance of education. I interviewed my mom and she has a great story with telling others how she overcame certain complications that she had to achieve her goals and how she became the women that she is now. I feel as if I learned a lot about her experiences and important events that happened in her school life and knowing how she discovered what she wanted to be.

Self development

My goal for this podcast was to go in depth with my interviewee and showcase something he was passionate about. He felt strongly about making himself a better individual. A lot of factors play into becoming a better person, growing, and changing for the better. I wanted to express how he felt about this and that's what I made the main focus about. https://drive.google.com/a/scienceleadership.org/file/d/0Bz0yEhPob3xpTHZudGwxR3F0Q00/view?usp=sharing

Lydia Anderson Podcast

My goals for this project were to interview my mother and talk about how her relationship with her mother and my relationship with my mother. I think that what I ended up with was different from my original goal. There were some things that I wanted to talk about in the interview that my Mom didn't and that was initially frustrating but in the end I made something that I'm still very proud of.

Ethan Halprin Podcast

My goal for this assignment was to create an interview that was interesting and expressed my interviewees ideas clearly, as well as making them feel comfortable and sound good.  The theme of my interview is tied around morals and how to treat people.  I recorded an interview with my dad originally where we talked a lot of politics and religion, however that became one of my struggles for the project when it got deleted.  The interview I am turning in is an interview with my mom.  I learned from the first interview how to ask guiding questions and questions based on the previous response, and I think that went well in my mom’s interview.  I also learned a little editing, and an understanding of how difficult conducting a quality interview is (seriously, I think it is hard).  I wish I could have sounded more upbeat at times, but my voice was feeling weird (also why you hear some sniffles throughout).  Still, I am glad I had the opportunity to do this project because I actually learned about both my parents and earned some new skills moving forward.

Arielle's Podcast

My goal for this podcast was to show that all forms of work are important, but a job title shouldn't be what defines you. A lot of times, a paycheck or economic status is what determines a person's 'worth' or identity within society. I had a conversation with my mom about her ideas, thoughts, and experiences regarding the topic. I think the final result is great, and the process ultimately went well.

Podcast

My goals for this podcast was to just explore new ideas and to get a different concept on people’s lives and why they did the things that they did. The actual interview process went well, I got a lot of insight about his life and he opened up to me about things he hadn’t before. I struggled with putting the actual podcast together and I felt like the way I structured it was wrong but I suppose it’s not that bad. Overall I learned that there’s so much to take from each and every experience and that life is what you make it.

Untitled Interview Podcast

My goals for this assignment were to get it done. That was it. I just wanted to finish this. No more, no less. My experience with this project was pretty bad. For starters, finding a person to interview for anything at all is hard enough, but being able to record the conversation and it being a whole 45 minutes was nearly impossible for me. And then trying to find anything meaningful or valuable in the interview, enough so that I could create a decent radio piece? Well, that wasn't nearly impossible, it was impossible. I think I learned most from those Ira Glass videos. You know, the ones where he talks about how difficult it is to get a good interview, how much crap you produce before something good, and how you have to have taste in your work? Yeah. Those. Overall, I am not pleased with my product but at least it's done.

Value of Work

This project wasn't very hard to follow but, brainstorming ideas for the interview was one of the challenging parts of this project. I started off well with a good amount of questions and thought of the people I'm interviewing quickly. I interviewed my first person who was one of my mentors but unfortunately, I realized that I lost the 45 minute recording after. So, I figured that I would interview my stepdad which I did. That interview went pretty smoothly and I edited it quickly too. Overall,  this project helped me practice my interviewing skills and taught me how to add narrations smoothly in every parts of the interview.

Experiences and Biases Podcast

Introduction:

My goals for this assignment was to convey a story through a different format I have not used before. The format I am talking about is a podcast and audio story. I have never done this before and as any new thing, there were a lot of ups and downs. What went well is that my interview went smoothly and that overall, my interviews and recordings went well. Things that didn't go smoothly was working with soundtrap (things randomly deleted sometimes?) and trying to upload my audio onto a video format (WeVideo is actually the worst and I hope it burns). Overall, I learned how to tell a story in a different way I never thought if doing before.

Podcast: How the Times Change Us

https://www.wevideo.com/view/857617533

Originally, I had wanted to interview my grandfather about his life and experiences. I recorded the entire interview and it was unfortunately deleted. We had discussed his work ethic and the businesses he ran and how he was fully consumed by work in some periods of his life. He didn't expand too much on this area, even though I was intrigued what the impact of being a workaholic had on the rest of his life and family, including my mother. I was able to get this information and meat of his story by interviewing my mom. We talked about how traits in our family were passed down and the dynamic of her childhood, but then it lead to another topic of conversation. We started to talk about her experience with horses and independence as a child and the contrast with my generation. I want the audience to come to new realizations in the comparisons of past generations to how we are growing up in modern day. I learned a new way of seeing things when speaking to my mom, and she really opened my eyes to why we react in the ways we do and the large role social media places in numerous aspects of our lives, more than I had initially grasped. It was overall a great experience for me to hear about how my mom grew up and hear advice and her stories to help guide me as I grow up.

Painful Songwriting With Gabe Leeds

Intro:
Gabe Leeds is one of the best songwriters I know, and I wanted to sit down with him and get his perspective on the process of writing and playing music. I didn't necessarily have a specific goal in mind going into the interview, but I found that he really didn't enjoy the process, and I thought that was really interesting. I wanted to illustrate the disconnect between the writer and the listener when it comes to music, and Gabe's perspective on the idea was very interesting.

My Radio Piece

I think this project was one of the most stressful so far. Not because of the content but just soundtrap not cooperating like it should have been. Although on the bright side I definitely learned a lot about interviewing and picked up on a lot of good interview skills. I also learned to take everything slow and to be careful with the working process. My goal for this project was to make sure the interview came out nice and has a nice flow.

How We Get By: Life Lessons From a Grief Counselor

Introduction:
I interviewed my neighbor, Heath Williams, a grief counselor to learn more about her workplace and her world. Through the interview, I learned about her childhood and how she came into the job. I learned about how she connects with her clients and the amazing times she's had. However, she also disclosed the difficulties of counseling and toll it can take on her physically and mentally. Through her experiences, Heath has learned a lot about death and life, through her, we can do the same.

Reflection:
Throughout the process, It was hard to narrow my focus. I wasn't sure who I wanted ot interview or what about. Even after I chose Heath, I wasn't sure what I wanted to learn or what my larger idea was. It turned out, that was the best thing. It allowed me to learn from what I had and build on that instead of trying to force preconceived notions onto the interview. After listening through and spending a long time editing and refining I feel like I learned about podcasts, myself, and life.

Italian traditions

I looked forward to hearing what my mom had to say about her childhood and our older generation family. I learned new things felt a closer connection with my heritage and feel closer with my mom. It was also nice to see my mom excited to talk about her childhood and go back to the good things she misses when she was a kid. I was sad to hear that a lot of traditions died down because the people died off and the people that lived didn't care enough to carry tradition over. But the struggle for me with this project was trying to edit my audio. Soundtrap lost my work half way through and I finally found Wevideo to edit.It took me two days to get my editing done which was stressful but I completed it. I am grateful to learn about family I didn't met, and learn more about my mother and my grandparents.

Interview: William Figueiredo

Intro:

When I first began doing this I was a little confused on what the bigger idea was. However, after interviewing my grandmother I was able to come up with a bigger Idea. Throughout this project, I have learned many things about my grandmother and myself. In a way, I was enlightened about many things as this interview went along. This was a great experience for me and my grandmother, and something that I wish to do again in the future.
