Mackenzie Harrington Capstone

Posted by Mackenzie Harrington in Capstone · Pahomov · Wed on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at 1:54 pm
For the 80 hours of Castone I worked on this year, I created a group called “WOO for Women” which is an organization I created to present women's history and created women empowerment. My presentations consisted of the different waves of feminism, and how they have changed throughout the years. This project was first thought of while I was taking a gender studies class my junior year. I realized not many people knew about women's history until they were in high school, so I decided to present to middle and elementary school student in order to further their education in women's history. I thought it was important to for younger children to know more about this type of history, in order to make the future better for women. I wanted these children to realize how hard you have to work to make the world a better place, especially for girls. So I researched hard for this project, and tried to find primary and secondary sources to back up the history of certain events during the waves of feminism, such as the women's right to vote in 1920. I presented to SLA kids, Girl scout troops, and continuing to present to a school. During my different presentations, the children were engaged. I made them listen to my presentation and they we would have discussions about women stereotypes and possible jobs women had in the past, and in the current time. Another activity I made them do was to set future goals, and I was shocked by some of their answers. Many of them had goals to be the first woman to do something. For example one girl wanted to be the first woman on the moon. It shows that children are learning from the role models of women that changed the future for girls. Now with my program, I strongly believe it will encourage young women to become an activist for women's rights in their own ways, and make the world grow into a better place for women in the future. Down Below are pictures from one of my presentations.

Annotated Bibliography:

Beauvoir, Simone De. The second sex. London: Vintage Classic, 2015.

This source is important for me to use because it is a book that talks about the second wave of feminism between the 1960’s-1980’s. In the second wave of feminism happened. This author was an influential writer of the time for women. In her book she talks about how women have gender roles pushed onto them like household responsibilities and how many wives were unhappy with their lives at home because of the life they were living as a woman. “One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman.” I am using because it means a woman is not born into these gender roles and deserve to be free to do as they wish. This will be helpful to show the sexism during this time period for my presentation

Brunell, Laura, and Elinor Burkett. "Feminism." Encyclopædia Britannica. December 28, 2017. Accessed January 25, 2018. https://www.britannica.com/topic/feminism/The-third-wave-of-feminism.

This source talks about the third wave of feminism. Which takes place in the 1980’s-some of the early years of the 2000’s. The third wave of feminism is the children of the groups of ladies from the second wave of feminism, that are passing down the feminist beliefs to their children. Such as gender roles, women empowerment, women's rights, labour in households, and high achieving women ideals. The fight was made, now the message is being spread throughout the generations. It also includes more women of color than any other wave of feminism. It is important to put this in my presentation because it is a time period I need to explain in my presentation.

Cochrane, Kira. "The fourth wave of feminism: meet the rebel women." The Guardian. December 10, 2013. Accessed January 25, 2018. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/dec/10/fourth-wave-feminism-rebel-women.

This source is important to use because I also want my presentation to talk about the struggles women still have today. The fourth wave of feminism started around 2013 when more women were noticing problems on social media and still in social norms. So, more protest were conducted and more issues on social media were be protested against. The voice is now online than it is in person. Media is the way the word is being spread. More women of color were accepted and more countries got involved with raising a voice for women at this current moment in time.

Mendoza, Jessica. "Alice Paul: How Her Quaker Roots Shaped Her Gender Activism." The Christian Science Monitor, January 11, 2016.

The magazine article gives a glimpse into the history of alice paul, one of the biggest women activist in the 1800s to the 1900s. She helped created the organization named NAWSA, and they protested at the white house to get a law passed for women to have the right to vote. Her and a few of her followers were thrown in jail for seven months and she went on a hunger strike in 1917. They force fed her to keep her alive. Because of this incident, it gave women the right to vote in 1920. This source is a critical piece to my capstone because it gives me good information for alice paul, an important activist I want in my women's history presentation.

Milligan, Susan. "Stepping Through History." U.S. News & World Report. January 20, 2017. Accessed January 23, 2018. https://www.usnews.com/news/the-report/articles/2017-01-20/timeline-the-womens-rights-movement-in-the-us.

This source is a useful timeline of women's history with suffrage, laws, and protest. The seneca falls event is an important event I need. That is listed on this sources timeline in 1848. Some other things on this timeline are laws like in 1839 mississippi was the first state to let women own property without their husbands. In 1920 women gained the right to vote. This source is a critical piece I will use for my project because I would like to use it for a printout for the children to read with me, and I will use the information on the slides I need to make to present to them.

Women's Rights Convention . July 14, 1848. Library of congress, Seneca County, New York. In Library of Congress. Accessed January 24, 2018. https://www.loc.gov/item/today-in-history/july-19/.

The picture is a credible source because it shows the advertising of the seneca falls meeting. The meeting was to discuss what rights women should have. First only women were invited, but then the general public was welcomed too. There was a proposal for the rights written, with a bunch of signatures at the bottom. This was the spark that created women activist to stand up against society and protest, in order to create equality for women.

"Women's Suffrage Movement." HistoryNet. Accessed January 24, 2018. http://www.historynet.com/womens-suffrage-movement.

This source is important to use because it gives a background of what happened after the seneca falls convention. In 1913 may 3, before president wilson's inauguration there was a women's march with 8000 women walking down pennsylvania avenue. The women's march is what sparked the public to recognize the issue whether they violently disagreed, or concernedly agreed that women needed rights.

YouTube. July 25, 2016. Accessed January 26, 2018. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpU2s966WYE.

This source is a good piece to use for my presentation because I can pull clips of it, or use the video to show the three waves of feminism. A video will keep the children interested in my presentation. All of my presentation can’t be slides. The video relates to my other research and points about the three waves of feminism. Women's figures throughout the generations are also mentioned in the video. Race was also brought up in this video. It was explained because all women were accepted by the third wave of feminism. More colored women started fighting for women's rights because they were being accepted into society.

Zinn, Howard. " A PEOPLE'S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES." The Intimately Oppressed. Accessed January 23, 2018. http://www.historyisaweapon.com/defcon1/zinnint6.html.

-In women's history, women were always overlooked, but it was worse for black women. From the source in chapter six, there are stories from black slaves telling stories about their male masters suppressing them. There is more on the source about marriage laws. During the, English law, summarized in a document of 1632 entitled "The Lawes Resolutions of Women's Rights", it dates back to a time when women were married and had their husbands control their lives, but they could not kill or harm the wives. The men also could collect any income the wife makes, or property the she has. Also, if a woman had a child without being married was a crime, and they were shamed. This was around the time of 1740’s. Going more into chapter six in this article, there are stories from women that had a so called “Bastard child” ( a child without being married). This source will help me with my project because its the history I need for my presentation about women's suffrage.

21Convention. YouTube. March 13, 2013. Accessed January 26, 2018. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDe5fkRWKr4.

This source is good to use because its a video I want to play about the waves of feminism. It sums up the time periods in each wave of feminism. Like how the the third wave started fighting for equal job opportunities and equal pay. The clip is short enough to play in my presentation. The guys information in this video backs up the other info I received above with the magazines, books,  and website information. Not only is the the waves spoken about but he talks about figures in history as well, that have impacted the waves of feminism.

Artist Blog Third Quarter post

Posted by Mackenzie Harrington in Senior Art · Hull · A Band on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at 9:15 pm
For quarter three I feel my art has improved than any other quarter. I enjoyed doing more than drawing. I did water color, and I tried a new art craft for my choice piece. I really enjoyed having the space to think outside the box. My creativity for all my art pieces showed. Im happy about my improvements. For quarter four I hope to continue doing more than drawings for art work.

This quarter my art mostly focused on painting. I am more of a sketch artist than painting. I really wanted to improve my painting so this quarter I used water colors and paint for the ceiling tiles. My art work was more colorful than even before. The shapes and ideas I used were different to me because they looked more realistic than my usual art. I tried a new type of art which gave me room to grow. I definitely think with more practice I will get better at realistic art. I was not so proud of my self portrait. Using the white on black paper was challenging. The shading was harder to use and it just made the face look less realistic. I think next time I will stick to black on white paper. I really enjoyed the ceiling tile because it came out nice and you can see the effort I put into it.

During this quarter I grew as a better artist. Given the experience with line and shape drawing, my art work became better and better. I also liked the experience of coloring on the computer. It is a really hard skill to retain but I like doing it. I also enjoyed the texture of art, because I am usually not good at texture. I believe that I did really well in this quarter. Each quarter showed my progression. I believe my artwork turns out really nice now.

This I believe

Posted by Mackenzie Harrington in Creative Writing · Giknis · x2 Band on Friday, May 12, 2017 at 12:13 pm

This, I believe

It’s better to be ugly on the outside then it is on the inside.

You can fix looks, not who you are.

I believe, a person can change

But once a nasty person, always an evil one.

Once the darkness wrapps its hands around the heart

It stains.

I’ve  felt the nasty radiate from fallen purest

So I stepped back to keep my purness.

I was screamed at

Bruised

Loney

Laughed at

Picked at

Nicked at

Sick to where my bones sored and the dark people that surrounded me quivered my blood, and made my muscles into stones.

I was left in a pretty mess.

Survival was needed.

Remember, I am the white pure angel that needs no fixing.

I look upon the darkest hearts and pity them.

For they will never be free.

They will never know the feeling of being lifted in the arms of a loved one

Or notice how beautiful the sun shines down on the world

All over grassy hills and pink sunsets.

How bright your hand becomes as you lift it from the ground into the sky

Knowing that someone else's lonely hand was holding up to the sky too.

To know what it's like to have the corners of your mouth perk up, and let a heavy sound of laughter budge from your belly.

They don’t know the feeling of warmth filling you up all the way in.

They let darkness and hatred consume them.

The ugliness on the inside, they can never fix

Their hearts are stained like gravy on a white t-shirt.

They are broken like the glass scattered from an abandoned home at the end of the block.

They should learn from me.

To feel forgiveness and spread kindness like bees spread pollen.

I pollinate kindness through softly speaking to.

This quarter I feel that my art has improved so much from the beginning of the year. I feel that this quarter had more set assignments then free ones. Like the shading we had directions. That was a first but it was easy. The bike drawing was more free, up to my imagination. I had difficulty with that. But I really enjoyed the eye and mandala assignment. I love my Mandala! My goal for next quarter is to get better using color pencils.

Advanced Essay #4 Stereotypes Create Violence

Posted by Mackenzie Harrington in English 3 · Block/Franz/Taylor-Baranik · C Band on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at 8:55 am
For this essay my goals were to stick to my thesis throughout my essay, and make my points clear. My per reviewer thought my essay flowed. So I think  I did a good job. I also hoped my grammar and tenses were fine. I had a few mistakes but not too many; which means my writing has improved. I wrote about street harassment and how it can effect women, and the things guys struggle through with gender stereotypes.

Factors that influence women's reactions to sexual violence includes making a choice between two different violences. Whether they will get themselves in more trouble for speaking out against their assaulters, or have it impact their life somehow. They are afraid to have consequences for speaking up. I believe that women are afraid to speak against sexual violence, because they are afraid of what the outcome will be. Women have to choose whether to harm themselves or letting violence against them go because they think they will be safer that way.  Gender stereotypes lead to violence.

Women tend to not confront sexual harassment with people they don’t know, but people they already know. Which is why most of the time, assaulters are not confronted because they are someone the victim does not know.  “Some other are afraid they will not be taken seriously or are too ashamed to complain.” Victims are also afraid to stand up to assault at work because they are afraid that they could lose their jobs if this is happening at work. The assaulter might be their boss or a colleague. They can’t be protected if the boss sexually harasses them, and they get fired for standing up against them. Maybe its a colleague, but their boss does not believe the women. Then they get in trouble for speaking against sexual violence.

According to the article “Hollaback! You have the power to end harassment”, some men use the excuse that they are complimenting the women when they verbally harass them. A women from the website, tells her story of her being a victim of sexual violence, and how hard it is to deal with it. But she was lucky, because someone else helped stand up for her. “I was on the metro on my way home this evening and a man sat next to me and began to loudly talk about how nice my legs looked. I told him to stop and he wouldn’t and I couldn’t get out of the seat. He continued to encroach on my space so I turned my head, and could feel everyone looking at me but not doing anything. Luckily a guy sitting in front of me engaged the man sitting next to me, asking him to stop and explaining that I may not like that type of the attention. The man sitting next to me claimed he was just giving me a compliment.” When the assaulter by someone, it took him by surprise so he quickly made the excuse of complementing the women. But the man that helped the victim, and tried to helping by confronting the assaulter. As the story continues, the man that stood up against the assault,  was trying to explain that it is wrong to treat women that way.  This story struck a chord in me because instead of the assaulter being shut down, he was getting help to learn not to treat women badly. That's not something you see often. I think I helped because the assaulter was convinced that he was wrong. The man learned something instead of being angered more, which would make him want to continue sexually assaulting women. I believe that men need to be taught how to treat women because they don’t see it as a wrong. The woman in this story at first didn’t want to speak up for herself because she felt afraid of what would happen to her. But now, being encouraged by her savior, she will speak out if it happens again.

Not only is street harassment in America, but it happens to women all over the world. Here a study was done to show that women in Australia and paris are sexually harassed. Women are victimized when they are alone, in broad daylight, and at night. They can get harassed openly in public. Men, on public transportation, take advantage of the crowds and touch themselves, or rub against other women. The sad thing is that most women do not know they can report it, therefore they are afraid to speak out against it. “Street harassment can also take place in public transportation.in the suburbs of Paris, 100% of women have been harassed on public transportation. Some men, called “frotteurs” (to rub), take advantage of the crowded subway cars or buses to touch themselves or rub themselves against women. But a lot of their victims don’t even realize they could press charges over that type of harassment.” Women all around are being affected. Its common too, so its not like every country has sexual violence differently. Next, you will see that type of harassment women in japan experience. “The most common types of harassment are inappropriate touching in trains, taking pictures up a woman's skirt, flashing on the streets, stalking and "chikan crimes" [chikan means "stupid man" in Japanese and is used to describe men who grope women in public places] To battle street harassment, Japanese women travel in groups, carry buzzers to deter harassers or take self-defense classes. Or they may stay home after dark.”  Women in japan are being harassed so much, Japanese women have to travel in groups to protect themselves. They travel in groups, use buzzers, attend defense classes to protect themselves. But some women are afraid and just don’t travel at night; they stay home.

My opinion is, that men have it rough too with violence. In a documentary called “The Mask You Live In” they explain that from a young age men are stereotyped. It teaches them to be violent. Such as being told not to cry because you are a man. Or saying the expression “that’s gay” with a negative intention. Advertisement shows that men have to be violent in order to be valued. Like in most  movies, the movie is centered around a man. If a movie does not involve a man prove it to me. The female character has to have a purpose for what she is doing that does not involve the man. Not for her love for him, or she is doing what she is doing because of the male character. The movie should also not have a man committing an act of violence, it’s really hard. These movies with men being violent teaches boys that to be manly they need to be violent and masculine or you are weak.

The reaction I’ve noticed from women on sexual assault was fear except in one culture. The Japanese created ways to protect themselves, to defend themselves against men.   Awareness is being created, and I believe it will spread throughout the world. Sexual assault is a form of violence. If it happens to you or someone you see it affect, stand up against it.  I think men have it hard to. It’s hard to stand up against stereotypes.

Italian traditions

Posted by Mackenzie Harrington in English 3 · Block/Franz/Taylor-Baranik · C Band on Thursday, February 16, 2017 at 9:18 pm
I looked forward to hearing what my mom had to say about her childhood and our older generation family. I learned new things felt a closer connection with my heritage and feel closer with my mom. It was also nice to see my mom excited to talk about her childhood and go back to the good things she misses when she was a kid. I was sad to hear that a lot of traditions died down because the people died off and the people that lived didn't care enough to carry tradition over. But the struggle for me with this project was trying to edit my audio. Soundtrap lost my work half way through and I finally found Wevideo to edit.It took me two days to get my editing done which was stressful but I completed it. I am grateful to learn about family I didn't met, and learn more about my mother and my grandparents.

Artist statement Quarter 2

Posted by Mackenzie Harrington in Advanced Art · Hull · x1 Band on Thursday, February 2, 2017 at 11:10 am
This quarter i experienced new types of art. Like the first assignment we did was a blind contour drawing. That was a good warm up. I feel like my pictures improved each time I drew one. Then we moved onto paintings, which I like doing. My last water color painting with the girls hair blowing was beautiful and one of my best pieces ever. I am very proud of it. I can see the improvement in my art every week. I really enjoyed taking my time to draw and paint my pieces. Some of the art work I made are some of my best. I hope to see my art work grow in the third quarter. Based off the first and second quarter my art work is improving.

Advanced Essay #3 "Identity & Belonging

Posted by Mackenzie Harrington in English 3 · Block/Franz/Taylor-Baranik · C Band on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at 2:29 pm
Goals for my paper is for it to be understood when read. I want the read to know my theme and see both arguments of my paper. I also want them to agree with me by convincing them with my piece. My process was to start typing and whatever idea I liked I kept. When I or a peer edit saw a grammar mistake I fixed it.

Identity is who you are. Belonging is wanting to be associated with a certain group. I believe a feeling of belonging is being with society as a whole, and someone belonging is them wanting to be with the rest of society. But can we fully belong to something? And if we do, is it to ourselves or society?

Society can and cannot co-exist with identity because that's what you are, rather than belonging to society. It can when you fit a standard in a certain belonging. For example, if you belong to a church. and the church is against homosexuality.  There was a boy named danny that belonged to a church in his neighborhood. He was cast aside by the church when he come out as gay, and didn't want to get “treated” for a mental disorder like the church suggested. “Danny’s church would either recommend celibacy or reparative therapy—a widely discredited form of treatment that identifies homosexuality as a mental disorder with the goal of converting people to heterosexuality—to congregants who identified themselves as gay or lesbian.” Because Danny couldn’t fit into this type of society, he was shunned and cast aside because he classified as something different than the church's beliefs. Looking closely, it looks like if someone doesn’t agree with the rest of society, they will throw anyone who disagrees away. Danny fully belongs to himself, accepting his identity. Even though he does not belong to the church anymore.

A a referee that was openly gay faced a lot of criticism from people in society. He was harassed by a player from a team. The player was suspended but that did not erase the thought that there is still hate from others. “I’ve seen myself and not because of anything you did.” This ref believed in himself instead of what society thinks. He continued his job. He chose himself over society. Here, the worth of society is not valued. The Ref stuck with his identity and didn’t change himself from the criticism and harassment he received.

Anyone that is poor is unfortunate. Of course they don’t want to identify as being in the low class. But that’s where they belong. This world consists of people who want money, such as taxes for the government. When you are expected to pay money for something, but don’t have it, you are looked down upon. “ It’s the same type of problem poor people encounter every day, multiple times: The demands of the moment override the demands of the future, making that future harder to reach.” A poor person’s goal is to be able to have money like the middle class can, or even be rich. But people in society put pressure on these people to do better to achieve that goal. This is because they are already struggling with not having money, but now they are expected to pay things like everyone else even though they can’t. Belonging and identity co-exist here because this person identifies as poor (unfortunately), and they belong in the low class since they don’t have money.

American is one of the most proud countries in the world. We, unlike many, have patriotism. In which we are very serious and interested in our country's politics. But because of that, we look down on people who live in America and identify as something other than American. Olympic athletes were criticized for playing for other countries when they are American.“For an event that represents so much national pride, where victories or defeats live in lore for decades, many athletes will represent another country, either because of heritage or because it may be the only way they could compete in the games.” These competitors tried out for countries their heritage is from because they wanted to compete for their ancestors, or it was their only chance to compete in the Olympic. To make the American team is really hard, even if you are a powerful athlete. These athletes choose to identify as another country, since they have it in their blood. They belong to play for American some would think. But they identify for another country. For this, many Americans criticize them. “In the eyes of the athletes competing under the flag of a country that’s not home, they’re competing in the Olympic spirit as much as anyone else.” It is an honor to be in the Olympics. Athletes will take any chance they get to make it their. Therefore, Identity and belonging do not co-exist here.

Identity and belonging can co-exist but be very different. How you perceive it is your opinion. But we have to realize that we should not shut others out from society because they are different.

Tangled, Non Gender-Bias

Posted by Mackenzie Harrington in Gender Studies on Thursday, January 5, 2017 at 1:36 pm
Mako Mori- a female that has her own narrative and story isn't based around a man.
Bechdel - women that talk to each other not about a man
These two types of test exist to show that females are valued and can defeat gender bias. That women do not have to have a purpose in life because of a man. That these female characters do something because they themselves are passionate.

Tangled is a story about a girl named rapunzel. She is kept away in a tower by a lady who kidnaped her to use her hair to keep her young. She is a princess. She has never left the tower. Rapunzel, every night on her birthday sees glowing lanterns and is fascinated by them. She wants to leave the tower on her 18 birthday so she can go see them in person. She travels along with a criminal named flynn rider, acting as her guide to see the floating lights.
Tangled could be compared to frozen. Both movies each, have a strong character that wants to escape their life and have freedom. Rapunzel from tangled, and Elsa from Frozen. Both characters also have men that come later in the story but are not the reason they live their lives they way they do.
These movies relate to both lenses because; in a mako mori lens, rapunzel has her own passion about leaving the tower to go see the floating lights she is fascinated by.
She also passes the Bechdel test since has a conversation with her "mother,"about leaving the tower for her 18th birthday.

A gender-bias lens I have is if a man doesn't kill people with a weapon. This teaches that men are suppose to be violent and associates men with violence, which is a stereotype standard society has. There are movies that have men without weapons included, but it is uncommon. I like movies where I can see a man that isn't trying to kill someone to the death with weapons. I would also like to see that a movie doesn't make a women strong by making her a badass killing machine. Violence does not make you strong.
Rapunzel doesn't use a weapon to be a strong women. He personality and brains is what makes her strong.
Rapunzel is a strong and independent woman, and tangled passed all my my test.

Advanced Essay #2: But I Was Paying Attention To You

Posted by Mackenzie Harrington in English 3 · Block/Franz/Taylor-Baranik · C Band on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at 9:06 am

Intro:

This essay helped me develop as a writer because I challenged myself to writing in third person about my struggle with understanding math. The point of my essay was to prove that literature isn't just a bunch of words in english class. It is a group of individuals that strive to communicate and learn. I did that with math. Math was a language, a group that did not want me because I did not correspond with it. I am proud of the descriptive language I used. At first I needed help with my use of quotes and context, but thanks to my peer reviews I grew as a better writer.

But I was paying attention to you

Mackenzie stares deeply at the walls of bright fluorescent yellow room, as she questions her purpose of presence and wonders why she can't seem to work like anyone else in her classroom. The question, “Why am I struggling with math?” bobbles around her her 4th grade mind everyday. She watches the teacher scribbles on the board,  what appears to Mackenzie as Latin, as she listens the sound of pencils scratching notebooks. She questions why her hand isn’t moving as swiftly as the other students as her eyes linger across her paper. She questions herself again wondering why her brain is not processing the board almost like a machine no longer functioning. She thinks to herself how it feels as  the gears of the  machine that is her brain suddenly stop and and grows into darkness, gets colder, and fills with cobwebs. There is nothing now, she cannot see absolutely nothing.

The proud teacher, ready to cause trouble strolls over to her. “Mackenzie, why aren't you solving the problem?” She stares at her teacher blankly, collecting herself before she then asked for help.  “I don't know how to start. Can you help me?” She explains as her teacher gives her a freezing look as all the other children in the classroom turn around and stares at her. All eyes are on her as the teacher complains about Mackenzie’s “ignorance”. “I just explained how do to do it a minute ago, weren't you paying attention?” As , Mackenzie sinks in her chair, the teacher put his hands on his hips with disgust  She sits in silence as she listens to the beating in her heart, deeper and deeper. Not knowing that she not one but two learning disabilities, one including Autism. Language should be about embracing individuality. If not culture and personal connections between people wouldn't exist.

People commonly think math consist of only equations and numbers on a piece of paper. However for Mackenzie, it is a whole other universe in her mind. Math is a language in itself that can be used to create a clique for people to isolate themselves from those who aren't fluent. Math is a form of literacy; it is a form of communication that does not include words it. Literacy does not need to consist of words, it is a umbrella of many languages. Literacy is a community that educates people and allows them to speak to each other them.  Mackenzie did not speak the tongue of Math, but she scrapped and dragged herself to the death to understand it. In a short story titled, “How to Tame a Wild Tongue”, the text states, “And I think, how could you tame a wild tongue, train it to be quiet, how do you bridle and saddle it? How do you make it lie down?” Mackenzie was forced into silence when she completed her work incorrectly. How to tame a wild tongue gives an argument and proves a point that people will try to silence you based on “incorrect” language. Everyone is different in many ways, including how we speak. We need to come to an understanding as to why it should not be seen as a problem.

Feeling out of place Mackenzie became distant from other students, she was tired of being made fun of. They would treat Mackenzie as an idiot for not understanding the things they did. They rejected her and she didn't know how to deal with it, rejection for a 10 year old was hard for her to overcome. She was singled out from groups that she was forced to sit in front of everyday in class. Mackenzie was being neglected and she began to believe that she will never be good enough. With no friends, Mackenzie felt herself slipping, in the form of grades and happiness. While thinking that she had no future in mind, everything turned into a great emptiness of dark depression. Her family tried to help with doctor visits only leading to prescriptions of  antidepressants  which didn't give any effect to the hatred for herself that continuously swirled her mind.  She began to felt alone after she felt as though she was thrown under the bus by the only person she looked up to.  Everyone around Mackenzie spoke the language of math, except for her. It bobbled in her mind “why would no one help me.” She is reaching for a lifeline that slips right through her fingers, acting like a ghost. But wait, she is a ghost. An invisible existence that is fighting for life again but there's nothing to grab onto. She holds on but her will is slipping. It isn't broken but will break. She needs help quick, before she gives up on understand math, before she realizes that she will learn the language of math!

How to Tame a Wild Tongue claims that language is not understood if you weren't fitting in with the environment.“Chicanas who grew up speaking chicano spanish have internalized the belief that we speak poor spanish.” If your childhood was not spent at Chicano, then you speak poor spanish.” Since Mackenzie spent some of her life not retaining math, she continued to struggle time and time again.

Before the last string in Mackenzie's will to learn wilters, a 5th grade teacher, pulls her arm out of a black dimension and rushes her through a colorful world of understanding. Mackenzie is learning math, later she is capable of speaking that language. And guess what, it's her language now too. She learns math in her own way, and sometimes, that's how life works. You do you boo. She made personal connections with others by solving math equations together. That created friendships, then later she was in a whole culture of students that used to be like her as well.

If you achieve the right answers and people understand how you communicate then you are alright! Language “Words are emptied of their concreteness and become a hollow, alienated, and alienating verbosity.” says author Paolo Freire. You can speak the language any way you choose. Some people speak slang, it is understood. Mackenzie math is like a slang that even some people are inspired by;they use slang too. She went from a flightless bird to a flying bird with the rest of the flock.

Society is not accepting of those who struggle. If you are weak you stand out, and get tossed aside. Mackenzie went through a lot of struggle in order to become the women she is today speaking in the tongue of math.Literacy should be embraced, and yourself. Our society should help the weak instead of pushing them away. You never know how amazing a person can be until they learn. Embrace your individuality.

My ceiling tile has a lot of meaning for me. It is an anime character named Natsu, from one of my favorite animes called "Fairy Tail." Behind him is the fairy tail symbol. Natsu has fire magic so that's why the fire in in the picture. Whenever I see this symbol or Natsu, it reminds me to be strong and work hard towards the goals I want to achieve in life. I am very proud with how it turned out, and I like my art style. I drew everything by hand and eye, no tracing. Next in my self portrait I challenged myself to again not tracing and using hand and eye skills. I started out with shapes and made my way into detail. It was difficult at first. In fact I have another picture of the same thing that I drew of myself, on a smaller paper. They look different. This portrait looks just like me, but the other had better details in the shading. I absolutely am prod of my work.

1. That you readers for viewing my horror story. I'm really excited about it, and hope you enjoy it!
2. What inspired me is wanting to go outside my comfort zone and expand on my imagery in my writing. Stephen king helped me along the way because I learned a few things from his books. Such as how to have a plot twist unexpectedly in a story.
3. I hope that readers learn my style of writing and continue to follow my work.

The Women's Rights Convention Reflection

The Women’s Rights Convention Reflection

The Seneca Falls woman’s rights convention was an important start to giving women rights. Even though it didn’t seem big in the moment, it helped the movement of mistreatment of women. Women were seen as unless frail humans. They weren’t given the right to even sign documents, that means they can even sign for a divorce. That wasn’t fair. And then the man would get the children, why? The women were the ones who took care of the children but yet the law gives them to man. This convention was to raise awareness of these things. I find it ridiculous. I believe that the convention raised awareness, which brought more women to stand up as decades went by. It came to the point where women wanted the right to vote. Now today women have the right to vote. Many know that it was a big movement. But it’s interesting because this convention was the start of it and not many know about it. Women were mistreated and it was overlooked. A women could even have the right to wear her own cloths, it was the men’s decision. Still today, we comment on slut shaming all based on a stereotype that all women need to cover up. Or they need to please their man. I feel that the convention, if they had the freedom they did now, would stand against this to protect women. That they would think it’s wrong that you don’t have control over your own body. It was especially hard if you were an immigrant because most of the cases the husband would speak english. Giving more of a reason that he would own everything his women can’t, because he is most powerful. I believe this should be in history classes because it’s important to know how society changed over time, including social issues. If women want more social justice, I believe they could get it. If this convention did not happen, awareness on mistreatment of women would not have been as recognized.

Happiness comes with Pain

Posted by Mackenzie Harrington in English 3 · Block/Franz/Taylor-Baranik · C Band on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at 3:05 pm

Intro:

My essay is about life lessons that I learned. In which that happiness comes with pain. You can’t have one without the other. And that you need bad experiences to change who you are and give you a good outlook on life;aka to be wiser. I am proud of being able to express myself in this paper because I have a hard time opening up. Also, my poetic descriptions are fantastic! I am very proud of this piece and I hope others enjoy it too.

Essay:

Happiness comes with Pain

“Left, right, up, down. No matter what direction you are looking, you are stuck Mackenzie.” These thoughts that haunt me from mind began at five years old, and I only started talking at age 3. “Little kids don’t understand or interpret much,” adults throughout my life would say, but I disagree on a deeper level.
Everybody liked to treat me as child that is incapable of hurt and feelings. Put me in a room full of children, they would walk by making me unnoticed. The adults would just sit there not knowing the inside screaming in my head. My head taunts me every time: “why won’t they talk to you; I see people sitting next to each other laughing and talking. Mackenzie you can’t do that, you are all alone.” Play with me, sit next to me, show me your smile! Black starts to cloud my vision, and my heart sinks like it is going to my feet. I have to hold it in, I have to hold it in, that’s what is expected of me, and I don’t want to cause others worry. So I am the child that is incapable of being hurt. Elementary school arrives, and I took a turn for the worse that I was not expecting for. I woke up every morning, brushed my teeth, threw my clothes on, got in my car with my mom and on we went. Every morning when my mom dropped me off I was embarrassed with soft kisses on my chipmunk cheeks, and received squeezes from her large, warming body. I’d walk into school, expecting to start the day off good. “Hey fatty, did you take a bit out of the door thinking it was a chocolate bar, a part’s missing.” Their it comes again. The Darkness, The pain, The regret. With teary eyes and a held tongue, I pick myself up with my head tilted down and bangs falling on my eyelids, I walk out of the classroom into the bathroom. “You have to hold it in, you can’t show them.” it whispers into my anxiety ridden soul. Looking steadily in the mirror, I examined my eyes, watching the salty pain running down my face onto my lip. The taste reminds me that I can feel, and why i am in hell. That continued like a tribal ritual for the sun coming up. Except there was no sun in my life, just whispers in the dark hardening my strength to speak. My lips were sown with the invisible threats of hurt and insult I was reminded with. I was not seen, therefore I would just be the air that you breathed;Unnoticed.Watching every move they made, listening to every sound they made. They do not see me, but I see them. I am the child that is still not capable of being hurt. Middle school I ignored all their comments, but I still thought I was worthless. I then met the best friend love of my life. Everytime she hugged me with warm moist hands around my back, and her big solid chest for me to find comfort in, it did. I imagine her like this blissful heaven like glow in my mind. She grabs my hand and pulled me out of the abyss of my screaming darkness, and in a loving embrace I cry like a cat who was picked up from the box of abandonment. She was my nice new home, where I could stretch out my legs and take a nap on a comfy couch. The voices in my head that wished for me to let go, and lose my mind with loneliness, have stopped. Sarah helped me, but my mind could not erase the saddest that was engraved in my memory and current vision. When I hug my mother, I cling onto her like a child, because I missed my childhood, it was taken away from me. She could not understand the struggle with my classmates. I want to show the situation right in front of her, but I cant burden the broken. They’ll listen through one ear and out the other. I am the broken child who is hurt, someone please notice me. Later as the year went on, I looked more closely at time with myself. I realized that only I can make peace with myself. I spent my time staring into the wide gaping sky, and gasping over the beauty I see in the flowers that cry droplets. The the bright yellow sun flowers that a husband gives his wife to tell her that she is the shine to his life. A baby’s laughs from a mother spending precious moments with her baby at the park. Or even the the burning sensation that I feel on my back and face from the sun shining on my Vitamin D deprived skin. Proving that I belong in this place called life, and I am alive. Even if a person hasn’t noticed me, life has accepted my existence. The sun will continue to beat down on my snow like skin, and tears stream down my thankful face, representing that happiness comes with pain. As long as I have these memories , I keep a lesson within me, that the darkness cannot escape inside of me, but my empty box will be refilled with the life that shines through the breaking walls around my heart. I am a girl who can feel hurt.

Cruel Leaders, Ruin Peoples Lives

Posted by Mackenzie Harrington in English 2 - Pahomov - A on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at 10:42 am

“Why do people vote for certain leaders?”. People agree to follow cruel leaders because they will manipulate people into thinking that they will fix their fears. History seems to repeat itself with dangerous people in charge. Its is noticed that this is an ongoing pattern through both fictional and historical examples, whether it’s in novels or textbooks.

If this argument is looked at  from a universal point of view, it reveals that we had god awful leaders. There is a website of the 25 most awful dictators and rulers of all time. This website is important because it has historical stories on these dangerous people from the past. It was cool yet shocking. All of the people on that list, are horrible people that are murders. For example, a man named Hitler is on that list. He singled out an entire religion, and blamed society's problems on them. He murdered and tortured many Jewish men, women and children. He was so terrible that it is impossible to not know who he is. School emphasizes who he is. How did he get elected? That man tricked people into thinking that it was one religion's fault, and that he would get rid of them to make germany better. People wanted their fear of the war and being poor to be fixed, so this was the other “solution” they could think of. Now that people look back on this history, they can realize how many stupid mistakes they make when people walk all over us. And that's what Hitler did, that manipulating son of a whale tricked others, and when he was in control he made people fear him so much, they dare not stop him. Yes, eventually Hitler was stopped, but he ruined people's lives in Germany for many years. Cruel leaders, ruin peoples lives.

A great world example of why certain leaders are chosen, is Donald trump. He promises society that he will fix american by doing what the people want and make their fears “disappear”. He promises not to let certain races in this country because of ongoing terrorism.  The people in America are afraid of the terrorist threats being made by a group called isis. Trump made a proposition to get rid of immigrants, build a wall, and put labels on muslims because they are apparently the problem to terrorism. Some disagree with those who vote for him, because he is another person we should fear. He will be the next hitler. As anyone can see, we never learn. We are voting for a man who will also try and destroy a religion. Now, this quote from a trump supporter, proving that people only vote for him because he will deal with fear in harsh ways. “Men and women….fearful that they are being displaced by minorities and immigrants, and nostalgic for the way America used to be.” This states that donald trump is voted for, because he is the “solution” to fix people's fears on america. I'm sorry, but facts cannot be hidden Trump is proposing to single out people in order to benefit him, but it's actually manipulation on the people. Why? Well, how will this help the people, it just gives him full power and control over society in America. Yet again, we could have someone who has the power to harm others, is this what we really want?

Speaking of finding bad leaders, Jack is a wonderful example in the book Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding. Jack had a little group of younger boys,  following his every order and believed in him. Jack used fear and manipulation to get the boys to listen to him. He put into their minds that he could save them on this island. To hunt and have food, to provide shelter, their little brains thought Jack could provide them with these skills. He proved himself when they went hunting, so they assumed he would keep them alive. But, Jack was cruel. If you weren't on his side, you'd be dead or almost dead. Even if Jack was doing something wrong or hurting someone, they still followed him. They feared Jack, so they dare not go against him. Which is what normal people do, you die or stick with the crowd and live. The only reason jack was voted to be in charge, was because everyone thought that he would get them off the island, even if he was harsh. “I'm scared of him”-Piggy (93). A person on the island with Jack was a boy named Piggy. He outright said that he was afraid of Jack. This just shows how Jack sticks fear in others hearts. Piggy said this when something was suggested to go against Jack. Piggy was too afraid to do it, so he backed down. “Jack had Robert by the hair and was brandishing his knife.”(114) Okay, don't tell me this isn't scary. Jack grabbed someone's hair forcefully and put a knife to their neck. How is he not crazy. “What's going on in this scene.”is what one could be thinking. In the book, they are only suppose to be playing a PRETEND game of catch the pig. Robert played the pig, but Jack got too into it. Personally, I think Jack was just trying to prove how strong he was. He was showing that he is strong enough to protect the others, and that he has complete control. Here again, Jack tries to prove himself strong. “Jack was standing before a group of boys……”we hunt…..i'm going to be chief.” (133)Hunting is a good survival skill and small boys like to do wild things. This is why they follow him, because they will feel some of their problems will be relieved if they follow Jack. He is seen as a great person to follow because he is strong, knowledgeable, and will riden his followers fears, thus, he is voted for.

How can we stop it, well I have no idea, that is for yourself to decide. I'm just here to prove an argument, so go ahead….can this statement be argued with? Will humans continue to choose leaders who create destruction, or will we one day learn from our past mistakes.

The Pleasure and Pain In My Neck

Posted by Mackenzie Harrington in English 2 - Pahomov - A on Monday, November 23, 2015 at 7:17 am

(Kneels on floor) What's this I feel? A sharp pain in my neck, flashbacks of mine (foosh). My mind sounds something like that. My friend that I hold dear, clinging onto my body, holding me like prey on his bed. His name is Nick. I'm trying to move back, but I can't. I am stopped by his forceful arms and thirst for my blood. The fangs in my neck are so pleasurable and painful at the same time. But it all hurts. Not just my neck, but the pain in my brain is arising. I see a light, that keeps flashing, as my memories are flowing by. My memory is coming back, people who I cannot recall until now; my parents.

I'm Mei, and no, I am not a vampire, simply human, but I am very difficult to understand. I remember nothing from my past. The only person in my life was Nick, the vampire, and that's all I can recall. I sought him for answers, and for years he refused. I want answers, now that I am 18 years old, I think I can handle it.  Except I wanted to talk about it, not become someone's meal. Why now, in our home, did he give into the temptation, to bite me. I wish he told me instead, but I don't want him to let go, because, this is the only way I can look into my past, without lies. (sighs)

I see my parent standing, at the edge of a cliff. Answers answers, I need the answers! “Mommy, Daddy, where are you going.” I hear groans and moans, from the people who I seem to reach my hand out to. Long fangs comes down from their face and.. “ow OW!” the friend that I love, is clenching my neck even harder. Knowing that I am about to witness something painful (grabs neck)

The past begins to lead me to, wearing something sticky red. Blood, its blood. My white nightgown is stained in dread of red. The taste and texture do not tempt me, it's gross. (closes eyes and shakes head) I want it to go away. But my parents seem to enjoy it. As I reach out my hand, I notice the long teeth, and the major blood stains on their clothing. “WATCH OUT” says Nick in my memory. But why is Nick here. I hear the sound of gunfire, and I drop to the floor. I sat up, but my parents never did. (puts hands on face)

(sits down in chair) He took my parents away, without giving them a chance to redeem themselves. Lights, I am seeing more lights! MY head, oh my head...it spinning and it wont stop. Nick's fangs hurt, but these memories are killing me more. (stands up quickly and clenches hair)

My brain is playing like a record player. The Nick in my memories raises and protects me. I feel hurt, because, how can the person who killed my parents, raise me without showing any shame. He lied for so long. Experiencing both good and bad memories at the same time is difficult. I don't want to see them, good nor bad, they still traumatize me. I am afraid to lose the people I love again. Nick, my parents, the fear , the pain, the love and the blood. They all won't stop spinning around me.

His teeth are so painful and pleasurable I am losing consciousness. My mind is nonstop. Now that the bad things are over, I see him, only him. Caring and loving me. Before my mind stops playing like a cassette tape, I feel the tears that I have kept in for so long, run down my face. And I hug ?”
7ike a want something to come back.)

This feels like a dream. It's harder and harder to register all of this. Even though I know Nick is still at my neck, he will eventually let go. He will leave me, just like the rest everybody else in my life. Lights lights, flashing bright lights! I'm falling….Somebody please catch me! (pauses, and puts hood over head) Nick catching me, is the last thing I remember. He erased...my memories. (sits down from 3 seconds with eyes closed, then opens eyes)

(Jumps up) I'm awake and unafraid . I have everything I need. Now a new life begins, with a sweet and bitter kiss, from the 18 year old man whom I love.

Why is liking the Japanese culture such a problem?

Posted by Mackenzie Harrington in English 2 - Pahomov - A on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at 9:50 pm

Everyone gets made fun of for something, even if that something is precious. You can't please everyone because someone will always have a problem with what you do. The Japanese culture interests me. I don't understand why people have a problem with my taste, it has nothing to do with them.I don’t owe anyone an explanation as to why I love the Japanese culture. Anyone can make fun of me as much as they wish, but my love for the culture will never change.

Ever since people in middle school found out I had a thing for the Japanese culture, I've been teased for it. Non-anime lovers somehow found out about the word weeaboo, and started labeling me as such. That...is not a good thing.  A weeaboo is a person who has a serious mental condition. They think they are characters in an anime living in japan, etc. This term was coined  in Japan to make fun of manga and anime lovers. It is considered to be an insult. Weeaboos in Japan are highly frowned upon. In the past, if you were considered a weeaboo, you were even disowned!

All that being said, I think it’s safe to say that I am NOT a weeaboo. I am simply a big fan of the japanese culture, and strive to immerse myself in the language. One day I hope to become fluent in Japanese. One day, I hope to learn the language, and become fluent in it. I also want my house to be rich in cultural artifacts and encourage  my children to  explore cultures other than their own.

They say high school can be a pain.  This past summer, a girl who goes to school with me went to the same girl scout camp. We are in her tent reading a letter that her boyfriend sent her.  At some point during our letter reading, she read out loud, “Oh yeah, tell your weeb friend I said hi.”

I look at her puzzled. “What? Who's he talking about?”

She smiled at me and said, “Yeah he knows that you like anime, but he couldn't remember your name.”

I folded my arms with a curious expression and said “Well, does he even know what a weeb is? Do you? That's totally not what it means.”

She made a defensive and worried face. “Well yeah I know a weeb is suppose to be a bad thing, but you do love anime a lot, not that there's anything wrong with that,” she said.

“According to the Japanese it's an insult!” My face become flushed from anger.“It’s a big deal to people like me. It’s an insult in Japan. It means I’m mental and think that I live in an anime world. I’m not that crazy, or am I?” I smirk to try and play off my anger and she playfully smacks me.

I’ve had many experiences with this, and it’s the same thing over and over again. People really don’t know the meaning of the word, and how hurtful it can be. It’s very hard sometimes telling people I am in to the Japanese culture. If someone brings it up I will admit to liking it, but I will never bring it up on my own. Being weighed down by the insult, I am too shy to admit my love for the culture. My friends in middle school didn't know I liked anime and manga until years after I met them . I've known my best friend for 5 years, and she didn't find out till last year. It’s a shame that insults hide people. I feel like I need to lock my thoughts up in a cage and throw them in a dark room so nobody can find them.

The thing you love to do is personal to you and no one can come between that. I love anime and manga because it makes me happy. It saved me from being alone when I had nobody to stand by me. It will always be my savior, and I will never stop loving it. The Japanese culture will always stay in my heart. Don’t let anyone make you feel small because of your interests. At the end of the day it’s your happiness that matters, not what other people think.

Q3 Art Reflection

Posted by Mackenzie Harrington in Art - Freshman - Hull - y1 on Thursday, April 9, 2015 at 12:31 pm
1. I have accomplished drawing the walls, ceiling, windows, and floor. I understood those, but I had a very hard time with the door on the right wall, the table & stool. The ceiling was a little tricky but that was because my box was a little bit off, when I fixed that then my wall came out better. The table was the biggest problem, I should have drawn it closer to the back wall.

2. If I could do this project differently then I would draw the door on the right wall better. The 3D was off. Also, I would fix my perspective of the table. It should be more looked at from the top.

3. Luis was successful because his table is closer to the back wall, his ceiling has a good allusion, and his door is correctly drawn. He did a better job than me, and I can learn from him and fix my mistakes.

4. In a one point perspective drawing you have to always have all your lines going to the vanishing point. If not then, the allusion would be ruined and your drawing will look funny. Your drawing would be incorrect. The vanishing point makes things look 3D, like the room. Your vanishing point is what helped make everything in your drawing look slanted, but it made the drawing look like you were actually looking in the room, at the back wall.

Hola!

Net Neutrality

Posted by Mackenzie Harrington in Technology- Freshmen - Hull - y2 on Friday, December 19, 2014 at 10:32 am

Some teens don't know what Net Neutrality is. An exact definition would be, ¨Not discriminating or charging deferentially by user, content, site, platform, application, type of attached equipment, or mode of communication¨. This means that we can use a certain bit of the internet and the rest is held in the safety of some people. But now the problem is that people want to decide what we should use for the internet, and control our freedom on the computer. Also people are trying to get faster internet but are being tricked into getting ¨faster internet¨.

-Columbia University media law professor Tim Wu

Critics of net neutrality say high-speed Internet providers need flexibility to innovate and that new revenues from premium pricing could help broadband providers upgrade their services.High-speed Internet service providers say not to worry, they don’t want to play favorites. We get to use what we want on the net, especially hard information we cannot find here. So its important for teens to know about this so they don't get tricked into buying something for faster internet. They can get tricked into buying ¨faster internet¨ but it will actually turn out to be worse than they had before.

Its important for teens to know if Net Neutrality can hurt you.The people that get ¨hurt¨ from ¨Data Equality¨ are the service providers, because they lose money mostly from having data equality. In the video it said they usually also provide phones and cable but the internet can do that too so to cover the money that they lose by charging for ¨faster¨ internet services. One of the problems you can run into is getting ¨faster internet¨ but having to watch a lot of ad's. That sucks, no one likes that. Sometimes you should stick with what you have instead of getting this ¨better deal¨.

Revised Slide (what I learned)

Posted by Mackenzie Harrington in Technology- Freshmen - Hull - y2 on Friday, December 19, 2014 at 9:56 am
I changed the fonts and colors to all the same so it didn't look like a rainbow hot mess. I also scaled my pictures to make it look neater. Then I made my description shorter and blended my pictures into the background. My classmates insired me to change my slide to what it is now. Now it looks a lot better and more interesting to look at.

What I learned on Google Presentation.

My presentation is a great way to show how I learned to use good presentation, or as I like to call Prezi. The video influenced me to make a slideshow and follow exactly what she did for her prezi, since it looked cool. In my slide show i learned how to change my background for my slides without using a theme. First you save a photo as a pdf file. Then you go to the top of prezi where it says background, and you hit upload photo. You then you pick the photo you want, and hit apply all, then done. I have also learned to make animations for the photos or word boxes i put on my slides. First you click on the photo or word box and go to the top of the page and click view, the scroll down to animations. It will pop up on the side and you hit add animation. There are a variety of choices to pick from. You can pick more than one. To do that under your first animation it still says add animation. You click on that again and pick once more. For example, the first thing you made your photo do was fly in, now you can make it spin after it flys in. Also if you don't like the font or color of your text you can click on the text box and at the top Arial with and arrow will be there. Click on that and pick the font of your text. To change the color just highlight the words and go to the thing at the top that has the letter A with a line under it, and choose your color. If you dont like your slide you can just click on it and hit the backspace button on your computer. To add a slide go to insert and hit new slide. To duplicate go to edit and hit duplicate, your slide theme will be repeated. To play your slide show go to the top right corner of the page where it says presentation with the play button, and click on it. The screen will be full screen and just hit the enter button to continue watching the slide.

The devices connected to my L.A.N is 4 Laptops, 3 phones, an Xbox, a printer, and an iPod. While i was learning about Wireless internet i need no idea there was such a thing as a fire wall. I learned that a fire wall is something in your computer system that protects you from unauthorized websites. I would tell people that they really should know about what kind of modem or router they have in case there internet gets hacked into or it gets lost, then they need to know how to restart their WiFi.
