Jiwon Choi Capstone

Posted by Jiwon Choi in Capstone - Kamal - Wed on Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at 10:30 am
“What do you want to become later on in life?” At the age of 18, students have to figure out what they want to major in college and even potentially know what career they want to have in the future. However, many high school students do not necessarily know what type of field they want to go in. Even if they do know, they might believe that their dream career is too unsustainable in financial terms to actually have the confidence of continuing on that route. With all the pressure, many individuals can feel very anxious and afraid about not knowing or being clueless about the future.
Therefore, Brandon and I did a capstone on “Job Exploration”. The purpose of this capstone is to inform students what certain jobs are truly like. We wanted to be able to give a clearer view of what a particular job entails. In order to accomplish this goal, we interviewed people with different professions and heard their life stories involving the work they do and how they got there in the first place. Throughout the course of senior year, Brandon and I were able to interview psychology professor, musician, artist, and a lab technician together. I was also able to interview a small business owner and nail technician, and a seamstress by myself. As a final product showcasing what we have done, I made interview videos. For individuals that I could not film, I made a transcript of the interviews.
Here are the links to the people interviewed:

McCarthy Unabridged: The Road, Page 27

Posted by Jiwon Choi in Being Human - Giknis - B on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at 7:12 pm

The passage I wrote below is what I imagined was cut from Cormac McCarthy's The Road while he was writing the book.

He knew he shouldnt have come. Entering the house meant all the memories rushingback to him, but he couldnt help it. Seeing something that once represented his haven in a cold, godless world led to feelings he was not able to describe. He thought that visiting his house would not have a big impact on him. He just wanted to be able to revisit his childhood, his past. The mistake he made was not realizing how dangerous memories can be and how change can affect someone. He didnt know until he was able to see that it was just not the same anymore. Dreams in the world did not represent a child’s imaginings or nightmares. Dreams now meant one or the other: the present or the future. Bad dreams made him fear the world he lives in, but it still reassured him that he was alive. Good dreams let him knew he was giving up. That the end was coming for him.

When it was too late, he noticed that only the house that stood was the present. All of the memories, the events, the happiness were left in the past. His whole life was gone before his eyes. Nothing left. What is there to live for he thought. What is left in this world. Is there hope?  He wondered if this is how weak he has already gotten to think about death so easily. Everything so gray. The world so empty.

Here is my rationale to explain the decisions I made for my project.

For my section, I placed it on page 27, after the first paragraph. I wanted to be able to touch more upon the idea of good and bad dreams and giving up, so I thought it would be most beneficial to place it where I did because the paragraph focused on his memories and dreams. My scene adds more to the man’s character development because the readers are able to see how dangerous memories can be. Just by the man remembering his childhood and recalling his joyful moments, it makes it harder for him to move on and shatters his firm belief of trying to survive in a world where everything is gone. In order to foreshadow how sever his illness is, I made him think about giving up and death since that shows the readers that he is having a hard time trying to keep moving on. Foreshadowing this in his house seemed like an interesting choice since his house only represented what is now “dead”. While the house itself was still present, all of the memories and moments shared in his home were dead along with everyone else he cared about.

The theme I chose is dangers of memory. Good memories from the past seem to be one of the biggest obstacles because they remind the man of what he used to have and what he doesn’t have anymore. This theme is significant in my scene because everything is revolved around the idea of how memories can interfere with trying to keep going. My motif is dreams because I think dreams and memories have a very close relationship with each other. Both have always been a recurring theme since memories hinder the man’s motivation to keep going and dreams only made him fear the outcomes: being alive in a dead world or the end coming for him. The essential question I asked was: What is there to live for? What is the point of continuing to survive? Because there is nothing left, both characters have thought about this question at least once in the novel. Even the readers cannot help but ask this question since there seems to be no hope of living in a better environment in the near future. Even in the novel, there are numerous obstacles that tell them dying is easier than surviving. As for a McCarthy-esque vocabulary, I used “rushingback”. I put these two words together because I wanted to create the illusion of all the memories literally coming back to the man at once.

Emily Martinez's Feud with Morton Salt

Posted by Jiwon Choi in Being Human - Giknis - B on Sunday, October 25, 2015 at 8:39 pm
When the Morton Salt Company finds out that a woman named Emily Martinez is having some success in her newly opened salt mining company in Grand Saline, TX, the company writes hundreds of bad reviews on her yelp page and even makes a fake Facebook profile in order to defame her. Since Grand Saline is a small town, rumors about Emily Martinez not selling good quality salt and having poor customer service spread, and her reputation becomes ruined. This project shows how powerful the internet can be when it comes to spreading rumors. It also deals with cyberbullying since the Morton Salt Company harasses her online just to lessen the competition in the salt mining business.

U.S. Involvement in the Korean War

Posted by Jiwon Choi in American History - Jonas - X on Thursday, March 26, 2015 at 10:47 am
During the years of 1950 through 1953, North and South Korea struggled to agree to a government that can unite the two Koreas together. However, North Korea already joined the Soviet Union and agreed to become a communist nation. Therefore, when North Korea invaded South Korea to take South Korea under control, the U.S. got involved. The U.S. wanted to contain communism.

I choose this topic to study because I wanted to learn more about what exactly happened during the war. I already knew the general gist of the war, but I wanted to learn more in-depth what U.S. South Korea gained or lost in result of the Korean War.

The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

Posted by Jiwon Choi in English 3 - Rami - E on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at 12:32 pm

The Time Traveler’s Wife

The book The Time Traveler’s Wife is a young adult fiction novel by Audrey Niffenegger. This was the debut book by Niffenegger and was first published on January 1, 2003, but was also made into a movie in 2009. The movie received several awards, and the book received the Exclusive Books Boeke Prize. The author, Audrey Niffenegger, is currently writing a sequel to the Time Traveler’s Wife, and it will be published soon. Niffenegger was born on June 13, 1963 in South Haven, Michigan. She is a writer, artist, and academic.

The Time Traveler’s Wife is a romance and science fiction book for young adults. The two main characters, Henry and Clare, share an extraordinary love story that seem to be quite impossible. The story of these characters start when Henry, the mysterious librarian meets a smart, beautiful, and creative art student, Clare. The love story between these two seems impossible with many hardships and challenges that come along their way because Henry is a time traveler, but the bond of love keeps them strong. Henry’s disappearances are spontaneous and unpredictable, while Clare is patient and understanding. As they try to live a normal life like other couples, they are always threatened by a force that can not be controlled or stopped by human force or will.

The book takes on a different perspective than other books do in romance and science fiction. Yes, there are books that are science fiction and romance, but this book was written in the perspective of two people, Clare and Henry. Because of this structure, the readers are able to see the personalities and thoughts of the two main characters very easily. Additionally, each chapter is split by mostly a linear time period. Throughout a chapter, there would be different times to signal how much time has passed after the preceding event; this makes it easy to see the time that have passed and the important events that have passed before the next significant event.

Another observation to note is that sometimes, the characters would speak in French. This makes the book seem more realistic because it shows the characters’ interaction in a different language.

Lastly, there is a lot of foreshadowing in the book. This makes it more intense and engaging because it makes the reader want to read more and find out what happens later on. Honestly, the most beneficial approach to take while reading is keeping track of the foreshadows because these can be useful towards the end of the story.

Although The Time Traveler’s Wife is a very engaging, there were some times when the author could have done better. For example, sometimes there was not enough details about what was happening. The book was confusing at times as to why something was happening and why it was important because there wasn’t enough explanation for a course of action or an event. Another being the author sometimes including events that were not really necessary for the book’s plot itself. On the other hand, there were many elements of the book that absolutely exceeded expectations. The book had many foreshadowings, but not all of them were obvious, so she was able to surprise the readers towards the end of the story with something her audience did not expect. However, with the obvious foreshadowings, the author was able to keep the readers in engaged by making them want to know what happens later on in the plot. Finally, the mysteriousness of the book made everything very skittish. In a sense, this idea links to the foreshadowing - it makes the book more mysterious. Not only was the book mysterious, the main character was also very mystifying. Henry was very unpredictable. He is spontaneous and unpredictable, and his personality and his time traveling are what made the book very compelling. The book makes the readers constantly want to read more and know more about what happens in the end. This book did a very good job at keeping the reader’s attention the whole time.

This book is very outstanding because it had a combination of romance, science fiction, and a little bit of mystery. A amalgamation of these genres make The Time Traveler’s Wife the most extraordinary book. The book was engaging the whole time, so the reader would not have to worry about reading a boring book when he or she starts the story. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading romance or science-fiction books. However, I would not recommend it to anyone who doesn’t feel comfortable reading explicit books that have a lot of uncensored sex scenes. Since the book values the theme love, there are many sex scenes.

Title: The Time Traveler's Wife

Author: Audrey Niffenegger

Publisher: Zola Books

Date of Publication: January 1, 2003

Number of Pages: (Ebook, special edition) 518

Genre: Science Fiction, Young Adult, Romance, Fiction, Contemporary

For my creative piece, I made wings because I think it symbolized the book. After Henry's feet amputations, Clare made him wings. She didn't want him to be trapped again; she wanted Henry to be able to fly away and feel freedom.

Abortion: Anti or Pro?

Posted by Jiwon Choi in English 2 - Pahomov - A on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 9:25 pm

Jiwon Choi

Abortion: Anti or Pro?

Abortion is one of the most debatable topics in the United States. When the topic is discussed, people tend to take one of the two standpoints: pro or against abortion. The controversy of moral and legal status continues to rage on between the two standpoints. People that identify themselves as Pro-Life is against abortion and people that refers themselves as Pro-Choice are pro abortion. However, you will always have an invisible scale that will even fail the best logic persuasion because there are a lot of factors when it comes to abortion. That is the pain that the mother went through while deciding to abort the baby or after aborting the child. Millions of women who have aborted their child go through the pain, loss, and emotional need to justify what was done. When you scale the issue down to this, it doesn’t become so debatable because no logic that is best will work. Therefore, considering the invisible scale of this issue, there is no “right or wrong” answer to the question of abortion’s legality because they believe their opinions on this topic are correct.

In Palestine, there were a hundred participants in an abortion rally. They held signs, cheered on speakers, prayed, and sang. This event was the 2nd annual Northwest Families March for Life held for people who believe that abortion should be illegal. Each had a different reason for why they are against abortion, but the group had one main objective for this rally. They were seeking for a peaceful vigil to end abortion. In another article, Pope Francis denounced abortion as “horrific”. He believes that this “throwaway culture” has grown to encompass beings themselves. At his annual “State of the World” address, he has finally decided to speak up about how “evil” abortion is. When you compare the two articles, they have very similar reasons as to why abortion should be illegal, why they are against abortion, and what is so bad about abortion. A participant at Palestine, Cindy Guerrero stated, “Every pregnant woman feels her own way and has her own fears. I know it's a challenge to get her to see why abortion is not the answer." Also, Scott Kirkpatrick had a sign reading “remember the unborn”. On the other hand, Pope Francis has said, “Unfortunately, what is thrown away is not only food and dispensable objects, but often human beings themselves, who are discarded as unnecessary.” When comparing the reasons for being against abortion, both articles state that people are killing the unborn as a reason. They consider this as a crime and human trafficking because they consider the unborn fetuses as alive. They also talked about how people are murdering these unborn babies that might help the world become a better place later on.

Meanwhile, there is also another stance in abortion: pro-choice. In the Huffington Post, a woman writes about how women who choose to abort a child is not an oxymoron. In the article, she stated that she became more pro-choice as she became pregnant. In The Guardian, actor Mark Ruffalo talked about why he supports abortion. The article also talks about the number of clinics left in some of the states. Lastly, it showed respect towards the well-known figures that stand up for abortion. When you compare the two articles, they both talk about unwanted pregnancy. They want women to be able to receive help easily from pregnancy they weren’t ready for. In the Huffington Post she said, “If a woman feels that it's the right time for her to become a parent, she should. If she feels that it's not, then she should have other options available: contraception, adoption, and, yes, abortion.” Meanwhile, Mark Ruffalo stated, “I don't want to turn back the hands of time to when women shuttled across state lines in the thick of night to resolve an unwanted pregnancy, in a cheap hotel room.” Both of them seem to have talked to or known people that suffered with unwanted pregnancy and didn’t know how to get help easily. The woman in the article from The Huffington Post said that she talked to numerous of people about how they waited until they were ready and how they felt when they had a child. Mark Ruffalo talked about how his mother had to suffer to get an abortion for a child she really didn’t want or wasn’t ready for. These two articles believe that if the mother has no intention of having the baby, the society should respect their decisions and offer help to them is what they are trying to tell everyone.

Now, when you compare the two stances, you can see the prejudiced points of view that the two opposing sides have. The anti-abortionists believe that everyone deserves to have a chance to live. They consider women who decide to abort their child as “murderers”. They don’t consider what kind of situation that the mother is going through when they are deciding this matter. There are some that are against it because of religion reasons; the bible tells us that abortion is wrong. Life is something needs to be protected under all circumstances is their argument. Other reasons include: the mother should deal with the consequences if the pregnancy was a mistake and if abortions are easy to obtain, it will be a method of birth control. (SexInfo Online) On the other hand, the pro-abortionists believe that the mothers should have a choice to keep the baby or not. They believe that women should receive help easily because if they cannot access to help, they would need to get abortion illegally. Other reasons include: in cases of rape or incest, the fetus could remind the mother of the horrible experiences, all women should be prepared for their pregnancy, and the fetus is not a human being yet. (SexInfo Online)

In conclusion, abortion is a topic that cannot have clear direct stances because there are so many reasons as to why it might be right to have an abortion in one situation, but shouldn’t be allowed in another. The prejudiced points that the Pro-Life side have are: they don’t consider the situation that the mother is in. If it really was a case of rape or incest, it would not be right for the having to have the baby, which may have her be reminded by the terrible experiences, and that giving up a child for adoption can be emotionally damaging to the child as having the abortion. There are many children who are emotionally damaged because the fact that their parents abandoned them. In these cases, it is right to have help accessed easily. This is not just a matter of protecting a precious life, it is the matter of the mother’s pain also. Pro-Choice doesn’t consider that not all situations should be allowed for the mother to abort the baby. When a woman aborts a child in a situation that isn’t right to have the child aborted, then that would essentially be a form of murder. Abortion can also lead to expose women with various of health risks.

The only reason for this topic to be controversial is because of the prejudiced views. If everyone were to notice that this topic is more complicated than it is known already, this would not have been a big issue today. The end result is that there is no “right” answer because there are so many factors that we have look upon when deciding to have an abortion. The circumstances are what matters the most. You wouldn’t want to murder a fetus, but you wouldn’t want to emotionally and physically damage the mother, and perhaps the child’s feelings later on.

Elina's Misery

Posted by Jiwon Choi in English 2 - Pahomov - A on Monday, November 18, 2013 at 8:12 pm

(Facing the back of the camera)

Why dad? Why can’t you just do what I tell you to do for one day? For only today?

Fine. Whatever, I don’t care about you anymore either!

Well, look! I am a bad girl now. You didn’t even care about me anyway, ever. I don’t need you!

(She slams the door and plumps down on her couch. Facing the camera)

Today is a very special day for me… (sighs)

But I think I should celebrate it alone again as usual…

(Gets a piece of candy from her backpack)

Celebrating Elina Walker’s 7th birthday. Happy Birthday to me… (claps)

(Rips open the wrapper and eats the piece of candy)

At school, nobody likes me. Today, I tried to talk to the kids because I wanted to give them some candy. But they kept walking away from me when I tried to talk to them. I think I’m too weird for them maybe. Maybe because I listen to songs that other kids don’t even listen to, do weird stuff, and just other things. Maybe because I can only get good grades and can’t do anything else well. I really want to make friends and have some fun. Like we can go to the playground together and play or we can have a tea party with our stuffed animals. But… That won’t happen because I don’t have any friends. I am alone… No, not necessarily alone because I still have my bestest friend in the world sitting next to me right now. My teddy bear. I am able to go through this because I have my teddy bear.

(Holds up her teddy bear)

But one thing that does make me sad is my daddy. My daddy doesn’t love me. He doesn’t care about me at all because he doesn’t keep any of the promises he makes with me. He makes me really, really sad. I wish he loved and cared for me today because it’s my birthday, but he doesn’t… I asked him to eat cake since it’s my birthday today, but he said that it only makes them waste money. All I wanted was cake… All I ever wanted was for him to celebrate my birthday today and give me kiss on the cheek or just a hug or just even saying happy birthday to me. But he doesn’t want to give me any of it. Maybe I’m just being greedy and annoying for him. But don’t misunderstand me! I tried everything so that I can be a daughter he can be proud of. I am a good girl in school. I don’t talk loudly to my classmates when my teacher is teaching, I pay A LOT of attention during class, and I do my best in everything I do. Like I don’t even ask my daddy for help on homework that I don’t know. Most of the time, I sit alone in my room and try to figure it out. But when I can’t figure it out, I go to my mommy and ask. But I don’t ask my mommy for help a lot either because my daddy says that my mommy has other things to do, so I shouldn’t bother her. But my mommy is nice. She loves and cares for me. I’m not really sure how being loved feels like, but my mommy says she loves me, so I love her too. I love my daddy too but all he does is yell at me for doing something wrong. Like touching his stuff or putting his stuff somewhere else from where it was so he gets really scary sometimes. I wish he knows how much I love him. I wish he knows how much I am trying so that I can be his good little baby girl. Then, maybe he will start to love and care for me. Maybe… I should start today.  Since it’s my birthday, my wishes will come true right? Don’t worry,I’m just going to use a little teeny bit of magic power. Okay, then I wish for daddy to love and care for me a lot! No no no… That’s too big…. I wish for my daddy to love and care for me just a little bit. That’s good enough. I hope my dream comes true...

(Smiles)

Life Of a Bilinguist

Posted by Jiwon Choi in English 2 - Pahomov - A on Friday, November 1, 2013 at 12:47 pm

                                                                                           Jiwon Choi

Life of a Bilinguist

“Oh my goodness, how have you been?” said my grandmother’s friend.

“Oh good,” she says to her, “say hello, she is my friend,” she said to me.

“Hello, I’m Jiwon Choi,” I said to her in Korean.

“Oh my, you are so pretty!” she said to me.

“Thank you,” I said to her.

“What grade are you in?”

“I’m in 8th grade.”

“Did you just come from Korea?”

“No, she was born here,” said my grandmother.

“Wow, she is really fluent! I thought she just came here!” she said to my grandmother.

“Thank you,” I said to her.

Whenever I talk with my parents’ friends or my grandmother’s friends, I get praised on my Korean. They always think I was born in Korea or I just moved to America. Korean was my first language because my family is from Korea and never spoke English too well. My experience is similar to what Richard Rodriguez said in his autobiography. In Hunger of Memory Richard Rodriguez said, “During those years when I was first conscious of hearing, my mother and father addressed me only in Spanish… I knew just enough English for my mother to trust me on errands to stores one block away.” (pg. 13) I grew up with my grandparents because my mother was busy working all the time. My grandparents insisted me speaking Korean at home because they wanted me to know my native language. As a result, I grew up watching the Korean shows that my grandparents would watch, eating the Korean food that I was given, and speaking in Korean at home to communicate with my family. Therefore, I feel more comfortable speaking Korean than speaking English. Rodriguez also wrote, “... Spanish seemed to me the language of home… It became the language of joyful return.” (pg. 16) Korean speech rolls out of my mouth without me even realizing. Sometimes, I would stutter my words or have an “American” accent to it because I don’t practice Korean a lot in the house like I used to before. However, when I speak Korean, I feel like I have power; I feel very confident and satisfied because people are always praising me; I feel as if I could earn all the respect from Korean people. In the other hand, English is still a “fuzzy” language to me.

The first time I started to learn English was when I was four. In preschool, everyone would speak in a language that I didn’t understand. I wasn’t happy in preschool because I had no one to communicate with. I would stand and look out the window waiting for someone to pick me up. At home, I was the happiest girl you would ever meet. I think that I’m an outgoing person at home, but a timid person in public because English isn’t a language I’m totally comfortable with. Currently, I hear a lot of people tell me that I have an “Asian” accent, or that I don’t pronounce the word correctly. Over all, grammatical errors are a natural when I speak. Every time people tell me these, I would get self-conscious. Being careful when I speak English is a natural.

“Guys, why does Jiwon talk like that?” said my friend.

“What do you mean?” I ask.

“Every one talks so clearly, but you have this weird accent and… I don’t know what you are saying sometimes. It sounds like you are saying something in Korean.”

“Oh…”

That was the first time I’ve ever been judged about how I speak. Last year, my friends and I were gathered in the hallway just talking. I made a comment, and my friend wondered why I talk like how I do. It really angered and annoyed me because in my mind, he had no right to say something that mean about the way I speak right in front of me. He had embarrassed me right in front of my friends; I wanted to argue that I can speak English well, that I am like everyone else. However, I know that that’s not true now. I know that I make grammatical errors, pronounce words wrong, and have a weird accent when I speak. I acknowledge all of these because I know that these characteristics exist in me. I also acknowledge this now because I always feel like I’m being ignored by people around me.

Sometimes, when I speak, I feel like people are slowly drifting away from me. Sometimes, it seems like they don’t care what I’m talking about or how I’m saying it. As a result, I lose power and self-esteem whenever I speak. After I am done talking, many people tend to say that they didn’t understand what I just said, or they just don’t react to what I said at all. That’s why I think power and language are related to each other strongly. For example, someone who is better at articulating is going to sound much smarter than someone does a bad job at it because you are likely to listen to one who can speak well than one who struggles to. People who can speak well are respected because one will sound like one knows a lot when one can articulate well. The people that can articulate well enough will earn all the power and the audience because everyone is likely respect and agree to people who can actually make sense of what they are talking about - an effect of sounding much more scholarly like. Therefore, people who cannot articulate tend to lose power and respect from the audience because they’re not eloquent, like me.

My language, accent, and pronunciation is my identity. The fact that I am bilingual makes me different from everyone else - having accents for both languages may be more acceptable because I don’t speak only one language. I know that I am not perfect in Korean because I stutter a lot when I do. I also know that I’m not perfect in English either. I will continually feel offended when people judge me by how I speak, but I know where I need to improve on and why I can’t be angry for people judging me on how I speak. However, I now know that how I speak makes me who I am. Also, I know that I cannot just speak Korean just because I am more comfortable with Korean. It is my role to learn to become more confident when I’m speaking in school or anywhere public because I will have to speak English as long as I am in America. People might think of me in a negative way from how I speak, but I cannot be discouraged by that because avoiding people won’t solve any problems. In order to communicate, we need to use our given language. Therefore, I will not back-up now. Another role that I have is to have a unique quality that lets me be different from everyone else; something that only my family and I know about. Rodriguez stated, “I shared with my family a language that was startlingly different from that used in the great city around us.” (pg. 16) My language tells everyone about my family history and my experiences in life; that is what makes me different. I am proud to be a bilinguist.

Jiwon Choi: Element Print

Posted by Jiwon Choi in Art - Freshman - Hull on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 1:48 pm
Inquiry:

For inquiry, I wondered about what kind of object I should print out for my element. After I chose my object, I had to think of how big I want my object to be.

Research:

I researched the objects that my elements make and I searched up the images to draw it.

Collaboration:

For collaboration, I asked my classmates which three are the best out of the five that I printed out. Also, I helped out my classmates by answering questions and helping them out in general.

Presentation:

I am presenting my printed objects by posting them on the slate blog of SLA. Also, I will be showing my art teacher, Mrs. Hull, my paintings.

Reflection:

I reflect on my process by writing out what I did. By using the five core values of SLA, I can write a reflection on my project.

Jiwon Choi: The Sky is Everywhere

Jiwon Choi (Red)

The Sky Is Everywhere By: Jandy Nelson

The book The Sky is Everywhere is a young adult fiction book written by Jandy Nelson. It was first published on March 9, 2010.  The Sky is Everywhere was a popular book from 2010-2011. This book has a lot of interesting facts including that this book was the author’s first novel that was published. This book was noted as one of YALSA’s 2011 Best Fiction for Young Adults and earned starred reviews from the Publishers Weekly and Voices of Youth Advocates. It was one of NPR’s top five teen reads of the year, ABC 2010 New Voice Pick, one of Chicago Public Library Best of the Best Books for 2010. This book was also nominated for the Best young Adult Fiction category on Goodreads. The Sky is Everywhere is about Lennie Walker’s conflicts and struggles in her life after her sister suddenly dies.

Lennie Walker always spent time with her older sister named Bailey. She was always tucked safely in Bailey’s shadow until Bailey suddenly dies. After Bailey dies, she finds herself struggling to let go of her sister. Lennie also finds herself struggling to balance the two boys that were nonexistent in her life before. Toby, Bailey’s boyfriend and Joe, the new boy in town. Toby is the boy that comforts her, the boy that helps her remember Bailey. On the other hand, Joe is the musical genius that every girl loves. He takes Lennie’s sorrow away, letting her to let go of her sister when she is with him. Now, her life becomes dangerous. It is like a timer to when the bomb is going to explode. Toby and Lennie does things that make her regret, make her think that she betrayed her sister. In the other hand, she finds out that Joe likes her and she is the happiest girl in the world. One day, when Joe sees Toby and Lennie kissing, she almost ruins her relationship.  Later, Lennie goes through many painful discoveries. She finds out that her mother’s loss is tied in with Bailey’s death. She also discovers her sister’s secrets, the reason why their mother left, and her grandmother's pain. In the end, she tries to understand everything, and she lets go of Bailey.

My favorite character in the story is Joe because of his personalities. Also, I like him because I think that I want to be a person like Joe; he is a guy that is perfect. He is a musical genius; he can play any instrument well and can compose songs. Moreover, he is handsome, kind, and calm. He is a character that has almost no flaws at all to me. I want to be a person like him, and that is probably why he is my favorite character in the book.

Death was the most important theme of the book. The book mostly revolved about Bailey’s death and how Lennie is dealing with this. However, I believe there were other important themes like love and life. Lennie’s grandmother’s love, Joe’s love, Lennie’s love, and Toby’s love. Each character makes mistakes in the story that they regret, and thats how they start to live life. They make mistakes, and learn. This book is really sad, and I had a lot of heartbreaks while reading the story, but the funny and cute moments automatically put a smile on my face.

The character that I relate to the most is probably Lennie Walker. I can relate to her because I have felt the way she felt, and I have made mistakes that I regretted like she made mistakes and regretted. When my grandfather died, I couldn’t get over the grief for days and weeks. I always felt sorry because I have never done anything to please him. I wanted a second chance to see him again, to say that I love him, that he doesn’t need to feel lonely. I couldn’t let go of him easily just like Lennie couldn’t let go of her sister easily. Furthermore, I make a ton of mistakes that I wish I can take back after the mistake is done. They aren’t like the mistakes that Lennie made but I know how she felt when she made the mistakes and regretted them. That is probably why I was very fond of Lennie.

I really liked the book. It was very sad at times but it was a really cute book. I never read a book like this type before, therefore, it was really new to me. I liked this book because I was able understand Lennie after a while. She went through a lot over the short period of time and I was really drawn to her and of course Joe.

Some strengths of this book are the characters in the story and the storyline. I like the fact that the characters in the story make mistakes just like people in reality. Also, the storyline was a topic that I was able to follow easily because I know that many people know the feeling of someone precious to them gone. I was able to feel really emotional during the book, which I think is the biggest strength. However, I didn’t like the ending of the book. I wanted to learn more about the other characters, but the story ended in a disappointing way. I was really mad when I found out when I found out that it was the end of the story because it didn’t really seem like an end of a book.

I would definitely recommend this book to others. It is a beautiful book to read. Once you start reading the book, you can’t let go of it. It also makes you want to know what is going to happen next.... Even after the last page of the book. However, if you don’t like romance, you wouldn’t want to read this book because there is a lot of romance and romance stories in the book.

Finally, I want to share a few quotes from the story that I thought were touching to me. A few of them were:

  • “The sky is everywhere, it begins at your feet.”
  • “My sister will die over and over again for the rest of my life. Grief is forever. It doesn't go away; it becomes a part of you, step for step, breath for breath. I will never stop grieving Bailey because I will never stop loving her. That's just how it is. Grief and love are conjoined, you don't get one without the other. All I can do is love her, and love the world, emulate her by living with daring and spirit and joy.”
  • “I wish my shadow would get up and walk beside me.”

I really love the second quote because I know that every time I lose someone who is really meaningful to me, I will always feel that way. It happens to everyone in this world, losing someone that they really love. Along with, having to get over it. The first quote is what really encompasses the book in my opinion. It even says part of it on the book cover, and I agree. We haven’t thought that the sky is everywhere except the earth, and this quote let me think about this for a moment. Lastly, the third quote is just what I always thought about. Sometimes, I would look down to my shadow on a sunny day, and I would ask myself the same thing as the quote says.

My Creative Piece

Chapter 38: The Alternate Ending

After Gram and I are done getting ready for Uncle Big’s wedding, I go outside to my front porch. I see Joe walking to my direction, but not alone. He’s coming with Toby. I walk up to them, fraught with confusion.

“Hey,” says Joe.

“Hi, Joe... What’s going on?” I ask him.

The two boys looks at each other and smiles.

“We decided to become friends. I’ll teach him how to skateboard, and he’ll teach me music,” says Toby with a smile on his face.

“What?” I ask, still confused.

Joe comes up to me, directly looking at me in my eyes. “I don’t want to just forgive you and love you without being comfortable around Toby. I understood you, so... I decided that I Toby should be understood also,” says Joe, “your sister isn’t going to approve me and you if I hate her fiancé.”

I hug him tight, so tight that I feel like my body is bursting into pieces. I hug him tight because I’m thankful that someone like him is in my life. I know that he’s way too good for me, but I know how my life feels without him.

I smile at them. “Gram is preparing dinner, lets go in you two.”

After Joe and Toby leaves, I go into the woods heading towards the cemetery. The hot afternoon sun is blazing upon everything; the trees, the grass, the flowers, and over the graves. I walk over to Bailey’s grave and sit down beside the gravestone. I reach for my bag and take out the letters that Gram wrote for mom over the last sixteen years. I don’t want Bailey to be the only person not knowing anything about our mother. After all, she was one of the people desperate to find mom. Unlike me. I open her little cabinet door and I see something lustrous. I reach in and pull out a ring. Then, I feel the pain that I felt all over again. I imagine Bailey having her baby, married to Toby. I imagine her wearing the ring that Toby got for her. I imagine her smiling to the sky, happily. I imagine her reading the notes that Gram wrote for mom. Then, I imagine her, Toby, and her baby as one family. Without anyone being hurt, or sick.

I miss you, I tell her, You’re going to miss out on so many things. I look at the ring for the last time and I put it back in. I pack my bag and get up. I put one hand on her gravestone, starting to tear up. I start to walk back to my house when I see Bailey with a beautiful smile on her face. I see her ring on her finger, and her stomach that is sticking out a bit. I run up to her and hug her.

“What took you so long?” I asked Bailey.

“Lennie, I’m not missing out on anything. I actually like where I am; the peaceful, painless sky. Even if I’m in a different place from where you are, I’ll always be right next to you. Now, don’t worry about me and go to where you belong,” says Bailey.

I realize that I’m crying now, I know that it has to happen. So, I wipe my tears and let go because I know that I didn’t lose anyone. My sister, Gram, Big, my new brother, Toby, and my boyfriend, Joe. They are all right here, next to me.

Domestic Animal Cruelty #3

Posted by Jiwon Choi in English 1 - Dunn on Monday, May 13, 2013 at 7:55 am

Hello everyone, I’m Jiwon Choi and for my You and the World Project, I chose domestic animal abuse. If you do not know what the You and the World Project is about, click here to get a basic information about what this project is about and for. After I wrote my second blog post of why animal cruelty should be put an action to, I started my agent of change part of the project. The agent of change is when individual go out into the world and make a change for their issue. For example, they can present to others about their issues or volunteer somewhere to help make a difference for their issue. For my agent of change, I volunteered at Operation Ava. Operation Ava is a no-kill animal shelter located at 3rd and Poplar in Philadelphia. At the animal shelter, I volunteered for about 45 hours from March 25th to April 30th.

The first time I researched what animal shelter I was going to volunteer at, I had some difficulties because had to be at least 16-18 years old. Then, I came across the Pennsylvania SPCA and I received an email telling me to attend the orientation. I started to take classes on the basics I had to learn, but they told me that it was a mistake that they made for sending me the email. I had to find a different place to volunteer, and I came across Operation Ava. When I first went to Operation Ava to volunteer, I had some problems with taking the dogs out from the kettle because some were very nervous and shy, while others were very hyper. The staff and the experienced volunteers there were very kind and helped me whenever I needed any help. As I learned how to handle the dogs as time went on, I didn’t have any problems dealing with them. At Operation Ava, I walked dogs and played with them in the backyard.

This project has impacted me in so many ways. I realized that there are a lot of domestic animals that were neglected a lot more than I imagined; I was sort of shocked when I saw all the dogs in SPCA and Operation Ava had. Also, I was sad when I saw some of the dogs shivering whenever I walked by their kettle. I knew that they were afraid of me, of what I will do to them, of how I will treat them. In the other hand, I noticed that most of the dogs were very energetic. It made me believe that if you give them love, if you show them love, they will actually trust you and like you, even if they were hurt by someone in the past. By noticing this and by knowing that this is why I am volunteering, I felt accomplished because this was a way that I was helping the animals. Even though this project impacted me a lot, I believe that this also impacted the community because I think that if more and more people are aware of how many animals are neglected and abused, they would help adopt animals and give the animals love. I believe that more people would donate to animal shelters and volunteer to help these animals. I think that I need to learn more like the people who don’t as much about neglect and abuse because I know that there is more to this problem. I know that the more I study this issue, the more I will learn from it, but I also think that I can lead. I think I have the ability to make this issue more known by giving people presentations about it.

I am definitely not done with this issue yet. I am still planning to go to Operation Ava and walk the dogs, and I am still planning to help this issue become more known to the world. Also, I thank my 9th grade English teacher, Mrs. Dunn for letting me have this opportunity. Thank you.

Lastly, I made a scrapbook for my memories at Operation Ava. I made the scrapbook so that it seems like I am actually talking to the dogs. At first, I made it so that I am describing every dog to the people who are reading the text but it seemed to get boring because I was using the same words over and over. Therefore, I made it so that I am talking to the dogs, and I made the font like an actual handwriting font to make the scrapbook more realistic. I’m glad that my scrapbook came out very unique.

Jiwon Choi: Negative Space Art

Posted by Jiwon Choi in Art - Freshman - Hull on Friday, May 3, 2013 at 8:03 am
  1. Negative space is the space around and between an object. The negative space is the background image. When you draw negative space art, you would shade in the space around the image and leave the object white.
  2. I found my negative space when I was cutting out the image by knowing the basic image. I knew that the outline of image would be the positive space and the rest of the image is the negative space. In my still life drawing, I found my negative space because I know that the negative space is the background. Therefore, the actual object is the positive space. I knew that that means the spaded space had to be the background.
  3. It helps an artist to see the negative space because this gives them a better view of the object. This is a basic technique in art, and artists need to know the basic technique in art to portray art more realistically.
  4. Seeing a negative space enhances drawings because it shows us something that we never focused on; the balance of black and white.

Jiwon Choi- Final Perspective Drawing

Posted by Jiwon Choi in Art - Freshman - Hull on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at 10:47 pm

Something I learned while doing this drawing was how to draw objects without any guide from someone. I learned how to draw something just by looking at the original picture and making an exact replica of it. By learning how to draw objects without a guide but with just a picture of it, I know that I can draw real objects in life without having problem with it. In fact, my skill of drawing a real object will increase now. The resource that helped me the most to draw this was the website’s steps on how to start it and our art teacher’s (Mrs.Hull) advices. She told

Even though I believe that my skills increased in drawing, my drawing of this room was not perfect. If I had a chance to do this assignment again, I would make the center square with the vanishing point a little bit larger, and put the light that is on the ceiling in the center. My advice to someone who has never drawn a one point drawing is telling them to imagine how that object might look like if you were above, side, or below it and make the drawing. If one imagines it in this type of way, one can know how to make the drawing a little bit more realistic.

Jiwon Choi: Macbeth- Creative Piece

Posted by Jiwon Choi in English 1 - Dunn on Monday, April 8, 2013 at 8:09 am

I made a piano collection of various piano pieces for the creative extension of the Macbeth quote analysis. I used little parts of the five pieces that I thought best describes Macbeth in each act. I mostly used minor songs to describe Macbeth because I wanted people to pity him and remember why he became hungry for power and became a killing machine. Therefore, I used more sad songs than loud, dark songs. This video below shows the change in Macbeth's character journey and the downfall of his life. To begin with, Macbeth was a decent man, but his hunger for power and dominance led him to become a killing machine.

My process of crafting the creative portion of this project was fun but somewhat difficult. First, I had to choose five piano pieces that I wanted to play to describe Macbeth. When I chose five of them, I had to choose the parts I think would connect naturally to the next piece I was going to play. Then, I had to learn the parts and film the whole thing. It took me hours to do this process.

Difficulties that I encountered while doing this project was there were visitors in the house when I was filming the video. My solution was just to wait until it was somewhat quiet and start playing again. I had to cut out a lot of scenes in the film because of all the talking. It took me about 20 minutes just to this filmed. Another problem that i encountered was that my iMovie kept closing. That resulted in me filming over and over until one film was saved.

I am proud about how I overcame the difficulties and got to film the video. I am also proud that I learned the pieces well in a short amount of time.

If I had a chance to change my creative portion, I would try harder to compose a piano piece on my own rather than using piano pieces that has been composed by other pianists.

From doing this project, I learned a lot from my colleagues and myself. From my colleagues, I learned what talents and skills they have. I also learned other creative ideas that I could’ve done. From myself, I learned that I don’t approve myself if something is not how I want it to be. I also learned that I like my final products to be something I will be proud of.

Q3 Geometry BM

Posted by Jiwon Choi in Geometry - Thompson on Monday, March 18, 2013 at 2:56 pm

-    How does this project relate to the real world?

-       What was the most exciting portion of this project and why? What was the least exciting portion to this project and why?

-       What did you learn from completing this project?

This project relates to the real world by us taking measurements with mathematical methods on taking height measurements. It tells us how to take measurements of buildings by using the shadow, stick, and mirror methods.

The most exciting part of this project was when I drew the entire block because I love drawing. In the other hand, the least exciting part was when I had to take the height measurements because it was stressful. I had to redo it several times because the height measurements were not similar to each other at times.

I learned how the methods work and I have a better understanding of why actually learn about what we learn about.

Domestic Animal Cruelty #2

Posted by Jiwon Choi in English 1 - Dunn on Friday, January 18, 2013 at 9:19 am
Hello everyone, this is Jiwon Choi writing another blog post about domestic animal cruelty. In blog #1, I talked about why abusing animals should have a stop to it and different types of facts about animal cruelty. For example, about the You and the World Project, the percentage of domestic animals getting abused, and some reasons why animals might be getting abused. From my previous blog post, I have found that another problem to domestic animal cruelty is that animals that were neglected and were abused end either being homeless or killed by their own owners. For this blog post, I researched more information about animal abuse which includes articles and my self-created research which was an interview. The articles that I mention in this blog post tells us why animal abuse needs to stop.

According to New York Times Article, Bronx and Queens in New York do not have animal shelters since 1985 because they thought it was unnecessary to pay the amount of money they need to just for animal shelters. This resulted animals that are neglected by their owners or have been abused to be in the streets homeless. In Bronx and Queens, without anyone rescuing these homeless animals, they have to find their own food and own shelter. If animals were not abused or neglected by their owners, they wouldn’t have been on the streets in the first place. (unless of course some pets ran away from home) I know that some pets might have ran away from home and end up homeless, but not many pets run away from home that makes about 300,000 stray animals on the streets.

Bernadette Ferrara decided to bait the kitten because she was worried about it roaming around. The kitten was eventually rescued and is now safe.

Another example of why animal abuse needs to stop is in the ABC news article. In ABC News Article, Mieczyslaw Zwolinski stomped on a cat when he saw it in his yard. The consequence of this man stomping on this cat at least six times, the cat’s owner took the cat to the veterinarian to get treated for the pain in the ribs and the bleeding cut in the cat’s mouth. According to the police, this man is going to the court for the charges he will be held to. Even today, people continue to abuse animals that did no harm to anyone. This article explains a lot about our current situation about domestic animal cruelty. A lot of people like this man that abuse animals because they know that they are stronger than animals are all over the world. Every year, there are about 1,880 animal cruelty cases reported.

For more information about animals that are neglected and or abused, I went to the Morris Refuge for my self-created research and interviewed a woman named Kerri that works there. In an year, there are about 3 to 4,000 animals that come to the Morris Refuge every year and about 200,000 cats in the streets currently. She says the world needs to be more educated about animal cruelty and the consequences of abusing these animals. Kerri says, “... Because I think that a lot of people don’t understand that animals are living organism not non-living objects like shirts or pants...” During the interview, I was also able to find out that animals that usually come to the animal shelter are skinny, might have scars, or injured, or they might even be frightened to see human beings so they move away. Domestic animals are tamed to fit with human beings and the fact that they shy away from people is not usually a normal sight.

In my opinion, I think that more people needs to be aware about animal abuse and neglect. After that step, people should follow the rules and stop hurting animals because animals have feelings also. I understand a lot more about animal cruelty and more reasons why people are abusing animals. As Kerri stated, if people understand that animals are also living organisms like human beings, I think domestic animal cruelty can lessen a bit. If everyone puts effort and care into this issue, I know that there will be less domestic animal cruelty in the future. For my next blog post, I will make announcements in my school (Science Leadership Academy), go to other high schools to announce this issue if I am allowed to, and make posters to let people aware about the laws about what is illegal about domestic animal cruelty. I wish that people put more care into this issue.
This dog was abused, and you can see that this dog has scares, and is injured. This dog is very skinny and the fur cannot really be seen in some parts of his bodies either.

Jiwon Choi's Review on Crewel

Posted by Jiwon Choi on Monday, January 7, 2013 at 7:09 pm
Jiwon Choi (Red)

The book Crewel is a young adult fantasy book that was written by author Gennifer Albin. It was first published in October 16, 2012 and it is the first book in the series of Crewel World. It is about the world being controlled, being watched, and the segregation between men and women. In this world, Spinsters can decide everyone else’s destiny except theirs. Spinsters are women who control people in the world. They control how many kids one has, what people eat, where they live, and even when they die. They can also control how the world works. For example, they can weave what kind of weather the people on Earth are going to get. When one becomes a spinster, they go into a Coventry where they will control the world and will never be let out from the Coventry. Even though Spinsters are controlled and watched by the Guild ambassador named Cormac, the most powerful spot is being a Creweler. A Creweler is not controlled by anyone and is the only person who can actually make Arras (the outside world of the Coventry) a better world. Crewel is a book that is amazingly unique and is a world that is filled with magic and secrets....

Adelice Lewys is 16 years old and has a special ability in weaving. When her parents find out about her special ability, they try to hide it because they don’t want her to become a Spinster. As soon as one is eligible to become a spinster there is no going back. Every year girls train to become spinsters and they test to see if they are eligible to become one. On the day of her testing, she accidentally shows her special ability of weaving which is being able to weave without a loop and gets elected to become a Spinster. When her parents find out that she became chosen to become a spinster, they try to run away but eventually becomes caught by the group from the guild that came to escort her into the Coventry. Her father is killed, her mother and her sister named Amie are nowhere to be found. Now, she will have try to stay alive in the Coventry, where she will be spied on, and may be forced to be remapped (turn into a different person and do what the Guild ambassador wants her to). It’s her time to decide what world she would choose. The way into becoming a Creweler or go to Earth and save her sister and Jost’s daughter.

The main characters in Crewel are Adelice, Jost, and Erik. Erik and Jost both falls in love with Adelice and Adelice is not a sweet girl who does everything they want her to do. Adelice is a girl with special abilities in weaving. She is a very brave girl who does not even try to act sweet towards people she doesn’t like. She says everything she wants to and has to say. She comes into the Coventry and tries to save her sister Amie when she finds out that Amie is still alive and determines to untangle all the truth about the Conventry and what happened to her family. She also falls in love with Jost the valet even though she knows that will put both of them in trouble. Jost is the valet in the Coventry. He comes into the Conventry to avenge for his wife and his child’s death. He is a very sweet guy with some deep dark secrets, and eventually becomes close with Adelice. Soon, he falls in love with her and soon he finds out that his daughter is still alive. Then he decides to help Adelice try to find his daughter and her sister Amie even though this means that he has to risk his life. Erik is a guy that was a nobody in Coventry who soon becomes adopted by Maela and becomes a somebody in the Conventry. He is the assistant of Maela, and he does work that Cormac and Maela gives him to do. He is also the guy that is allowed to be near Spinsters because he was well trained of what he is to do and not to do when he is near girls. He tells new spinsters where to go and where they will stay. He is like the tour guide for new spinsters. After Adelice comes into the Conventry, for first time of his life, he falls in love and betrays Maela. In the end, he has to choose who to be with, Maela or Adelice...

There are two types of conflicts in this book. The conflicts of the story are person versus person and person versus self. I know that the conflict in the story is person versus person because in the Coventry, there are a lot of people who have conflicts within each other. For example, Maela is always trying to pull down Adelice and make her suffer because she doesn’t like Adelice. Adelice “stole” Erik away from her and she is loved by Cormac so she is jealous of Adelice. Another example is that when new Spinsters come into the Coventry, they have to go against each other and try to be better than everyone else to be in the top position as a spinster. For person versus self, Adelice has to fight herself in the book. For example, she has to try hard not to show off her skills of weaving and has to act dumb in order to not get into any trouble. Also, she has to pretend like she doesn’t care if someone talks about Amie and try to fight the urge of the tears coming out whenever she hears about her family.

My favorite character is Adelice because I like how she has courage and is never afraid to say what she wants to say. I like the fact that she can express her feelings and opinions without being scared of what the other person will think of her. This character trait is something I don’t have but would like it if I have this character trait. She doesn’t care about what others think about her also. I think she is a very strong character and has a lot of talents. I cannot relate to any of the characters in the story because since this book’s genre is fantasy, the conflicts the characters have are not really anything that I came across in my life. The characters have some kind of problems that are realistic or non-realistic that the characters are experiencing or struggling with. For example, Adelice’s and Jost’s family members being killed by spinsters or having to live while being monitored 24 hours. Even though I cannot relate to any of the characters in the story I like the book Crewel because I become drawn to it. The book makes me want to keep reading it because I am also curious of what will happen next. Even though I really like this book because there is clear character traits in the characters I think that it was unnecessary when Maela was being very rude to Adelice and the “evil” events in the story.  In my opinion, there is suspense in the story. Also the fantasy of the story, what the story is about, and the images it creates in my head is just wonderful. Some strengths are that it makes the readers want to keep reading and find out what will happen next. In each page, something new is revealed. Also, it has a mixture of realistic and non-realistic of the world traits. There are politics, romance, segregation, being monitored and controlled. Some weaknesses are that the story is kind of hard to follow if someone is summarizing it to you because you have to read the book to understand what it’s about. Also, that even though Adelice is a very strong character in the story, there are sometimes when she could have done something better in that situation.

Important ideas that the reader should consider while reading the book is of how the women has limited options, men are in control, and there are constant observations.                    The readers should also note that this world is very segregated. The neighborhood is divided with men on one side and women on the other so that they do not meet with each other. They get married with the parent that their parents choose and is then controlled with how many kids they have and how much food they eat from the Coventry. The theme of the story is that you have to overcome your hardships and you have to have the ability stay strong and have determination in whatever you are trying to achieve. Also, a theme can be that the segregated world does not make our life better because the people do not really have any freedom from the segregation and how their lives are controlled.

I would strongly recommend this book to people that are into fantasy and romance. If you want to enter another and whole different world from what we are living in today, I recommend that you read this book. Also, whoever liked reading The Hunger Games and Twilight should take a look at the book.

Script:

About Me: Hello my name is Jiwon Choi. Some of my hobbies are playing on my piano and oboe, reading books, listening to music, and going on my laptop. I made this slide look the way it does because it stated that there should not be a lot of words on the slide and the words should be in big letters. Therefore, I made the words big and put little words as possible. I made the music notes on the staff bleed on the slide because I didn’t really want it to look like it’s fitting on the slide. I thought if I made it bleed, it would capture people’s attention more. Why did I put the music staff on my slide? I put the music staff because most of my hobbies are about music. For example, like playing my piano, oboe, and listening to music. Also, my hobbies are in different shades of blue because I wanted it to contrast with the background color. My name and the word “hobbies” are in green because I wanted to contrast it with the green patch on the top.

About Me
About Me

I made some changes to my slide because my older slide has too much words on it. I changed it into a black background because it looked more simple. I still have the music  staff in there because my main theme for my slide is music. The music staff also bleeds because I didn’t want it to fit onto the page. I made my name stand out more because I wanted my name to stand out more. The font of my name is not playful anymore because I wanted to make it look more formal.

Domestic Animal Abuse

My name is Jiwon Choi and I will introduce you to The You and the World Project and to my issue. The You and the World Project is a project that lets individuals focus on real world projects that they are interested in. The individuals research information about their subject to learn more about it and they would tell the information to other people. It is a project that lets researchers express their feelings and talk about their issue on blogs and help make a change for this issue by joining services, giving speeches about it, or interviewing people about the problem. It lets people to learn more about these problems/ issues and it gives a chance for individuals to give more information about it.

My issue is international domestic animal abuse. I am focusing on international instead of national domestic animal abuse because there are animals all over the world that are being abused by their owners. Focusing on international domestic animal abuse can allow me to help put a stop to animal cruelty more than just nationally. I am interested in this issue because I love animals and I believe that no animals should be rejected and abused. By 2022, 22% of all species might become extinct if no action is taken to help solve this issue. In America, about 62 percent of all households own a pet but most of the animals become homeless and may end up in a shelter waiting to be adopted again.

Domestic animals are various animals that have been tamed and fit for the human environment. The rate of domestic animal abuse involves 64.5% of dogs, 18% cats, and 25% of other animals. This is only the rate nationally, imagine what the rate is internationally.13% of intentional animal abuse cases involve domestic violence. Most battered women have abused animals because animal abuse is a way to revenge, torture, and control the victims. Pets may suffer unexplained injuries, health problems, and permanent disabilities because of animal abuse and most of the time, their owner do not take their pets to the veterinarian. So, why should we take action? We should take action because we get basic human rights so therefore we have no rights to torture weaker creatures. If someone rejects you and hits you, you would get depressed and be in pain. It is the same with animals, they have feelings and feel pain.

At this point of my process I really believe that people should help out to prevent animal cruelty. They have feelings like we do and can feel pain. I believe that if an owner gets a pet, the owner should treat one’s pet with love and kindness. I hope to learn more about how I can help end domestic animal cruelty and reasons more in depth of why people abuse their pets. As I am working on the You and the World Project, I hope to make a difference about animal cruelty and I hope to let people know about why this is bad and should be stopped. Please help put a stop to domestic animal cruelty.

Choi, Jiwon, Lucid Chart, Home Network

My Internet service provider is comcast. My modem is connected to comcast and then my router. There are many electronic devices connected to my router. I have laptops, phones, and television connected to it. I also have a airport express connected from the router and that connects my printer.

Something that I learned was if a document, picture, video, etc. leaves your hard drive, it is no longer yours. Also, I found out that something that you post on a website or somewhere on the internet can be taken offensively. That happens at times because you can't see that they're joking around or one could just interpret it in a different way than you meant to say.

I would tell other people that they should know more about how the internet works and as well as information about the ISP. Also, it is quite expensive so I would warn them to choose the right price amount to not to be so worried about the price.
