Keith Hodge Capstone

Posted by Keith Hodge in Capstone · Menasion · Wed on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at 10:27 am
My Capstone if you don't know already was a SLA Philadelphia Pro sports update website that I made using Google slides and Google sites and I updated this site every time a Philadelphia sports team played. As you can imagine this was a little difficult to complete sometimes because 2 or 3 teams played each night but as the year progressed it got easier and I was able to do updates in a matter of seconds. The website had multiple pages including one for the Sixers, Eagles, Phillies, Flyers and even a "This day in Philadelphia sports" page. I also did a Kahoot and went around school asking people different trivia questions based on the Philadelphia sports teams, Overall the Capstone process for me was very enjoyable but it also had its moments.

My goal for the Capstone was doing something enjoyable because I was not going to do something boring or non engaging for 90 hours. I also think in the start of my process I said I want the community to come together with sports and I believe I did that. Because sports always bring people together I mean just look at the Eagles this year the whole team bonded when something went wrong and when they won the superbowl all the fans bonded as well. One last thing I think I picked the most perfect capstone because I chose a sports capstone the year the Eagles won the superbowl, the year the Sixers and Flyers made it to the playoffs and the year the Phillies are hot yet again.

Keith Hodge Senior Art Q3 Assignment's

Posted by Keith Hodge on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at 10:14 am

Well for week 1 through 2 I completed the water color assignment and this one was pretty cool because I learned some new methods for art and I used Sgraffito, Lifting off, Splatter, Flat wash, Straw blowing and Rubber cement and those were very interesting combining all those 6 together for a winter theme watercolor painting. Week 3 was the Metamorphosis Drawing when I drew a chicken turning into a bucket of fried chicken and I’m not really sure how I thought of this but I’m glad I did this picture and it turned out well. The week 4 and 5 collage was probably the most complex thing I drew all year because it took a ton of colored pencils but the finished product looked great. For week 6 and 7 for the mosaic it took some effort to do as well because I just finished it in time on the very last day, The week 8 coat of arms assignment was really cool because it took about a day to complete and I used flyers colors for it, The last assignment was the create your own piece of art for week 9 and I did a image of homer simpson choking bart but homer is in a flyer’s jersey and bart is in a penguins jersey so this piece I would say I am very proud of.

Keith Hodge Senior Art Q2 assignments

Posted by Keith Hodge in Senior Art · Hull · A Band on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at 8:26 am

Well the first thing I created was the blind contour and that was very interesting to do because I watched the video and did it with my not so good eye so they would out of whack and shape. The 2nd thing we did was the color pencil technique and I really liked this one because I really followed step by step and mixed and matched with the colors which turned out really well. I really liked the color because it showed me that I can tone two color pencils and make two colors as well as one color has a light side as well as a dark side. With the self portrait in week 5 and 6 I almost have my head shape down but not quite maybe one more crack at it and I can get the shape of my head correct. The fruit color pencil drawing looked really good and I think I got better the more I did it. Lastly for week 9 and the blind drawings that got my imagination going because I made a hand playing a trumpet,Hungry man, bumper cars,a fish eating a fish eating bait and lastly squidward as Captain magma.

I felt very proud of myself with every piece of art I did. The first piece of art I did was the fall wall hanging and that was pretty cool looking because it featured the flyers logo,Philly skyline, retired numbers and Ed Snider looking down at the sky line also it the best part was that I was able to hang it up and the whole class and SLA community can see it for years to come. The second piece of art I did was the fall wall hanging, This one looked awesome too because the fall time reminds me of the simpsons treehouse of horrors special, so I have them on their couch and they are surrounded by the characters in the past treehouse episodes. The 3rd piece of art was the self portrait of me I think I did pretty good for my first drawing of myself. The last piece of art is the water color art and I think it was good as well because it featured a lot of cool fruits. So overall I felt very proud of every piece I completed.

This I Believe

Posted by Keith Hodge in Creative Writing · Giknis · x2 Band on Friday, May 12, 2017 at 12:13 pm

There is one quote I like from one of my favorite actors Jim Carrey. He once said ¨ Forget the pain, Mock the pain, Reduce it. And laugh.¨. I had chronic migraines from March of 2016 to April 6th,2017 the day of my septoplasty but we will see in mid June what my neurosurgeon says if I still have them. I probably had them longer but there is no way to tell.

The 3 days I sat there trying to avoid the discomfort of the stents, stitches, blood covered gauze pad,and trying to avoid sneezing and all without blowing my nose. Yes,that all sucked but in the end I have no headaches and a facelift with a nose job as well. Not only did I get a teenage girl's dream but for 3 days I got to watch my favorite comedians to relieve my pain even though I was not supposed to laugh. So it must true that laughing is the best medicine.

I believe that causing someone it or receiving it from someone laughter is the best medicine to feel better or just at random you don't even have to be sick. For this treatment I could either 1st go and and see the doctor at his office (buying a ticket right to show or movie),or 2nd I could call him and ask him to come to my house (Searching comedian on internet or watching movie on TV or On Demand). Well personally,I have multiple doctors (Comedians) I like to watch every time they are on. Here is the list Gabriel Iglesias,Jeff Dunham,Carlos Mencia,Adam Sandler,Kevin James,David Spade,Chris Farley,Jim Carrey,Joe Gatto,James Murray,Sal Vulcano,Brian Quinn and possibly a few other just to name a few.

I think that for those who have diseases or sickness or even recovering this really helps out. But the best one of all would possibly half to be doing your own comedy for those people. So for example let's say my mom is sick from the flu and she is bored but she does not want to watch TV so I crack some jokes or just at random say funny things and she laughs. I also crack jokes even when someone has surgery so my grandpop had surgery last week so I called him and told him jokes as well.

But if my jokes do not work their is always old plain 1 and 2. Which are going to see a comedian or just my favorite comedians and watching them. But there is one more option and this is probably the best one as well which is go and crack jokes with your friends. So here is an example you are sitting and then something funny happens boom everyone laughs and then we crack jokes laughs some more and then stop and repeat.

So if you want be happy after being sick, surgery or even if not sad at all just go ahead like I do and watch, see,do it yourself or do it with friends laugh and comedy.

Advanced Essay #4 (Keith Hodge)

Posted by Keith Hodge in English 3 · Block/Franz/Taylor-Baranik · E Band on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at 2:09 pm

Introduction: The goal for my paper I would say is to get some info out about PTSD and I believe I have. My reflection I think I did very good on the paper as well to I think it was one of my best advanced essays this year. I also started the paper soon as I got it even though finding sources was hard I did. So like I said I think this was a very good paper and hopefully you enjoy it.

PTSD is a disorder that is brought upon people but not just any type of people these people have been in war or just plain battle. But they have not just seen a couple bullets come right past them They have seen people shooting the enemy and their own men - things blown up, and even worse - people dying right in front of them. This disorder, or whatever you would like to call it is called PTSD, which stands for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Hopefully this essay will enlighten you on this disorder.

Well one of my first examples is from five poems about Vietnam where the actual guy that wrote them went and served in Vietnam as a long range reconnaissance patrol unit. The first quote is from the poem Armed forces recruitment day ¨Rules and regs. You are probably surrounded. There are five others beside you. You are twenty-three. You look look quickly around you: The sky, the trees. You're far from home. You know now that your life is no longer yours.¨. This next quote is from the poem Natural history ¨One night, shivering uncontrollably with fear, knowing I would have to kill whatever was out there, walking slowly, scratching.¨. Those two poems are almost like feeling PTSD because the first one gives us what you feel during war because we can imagine it would feel very surrounded by the enemy, the trees, you are so far from home and then you realize you're life is gone, or no longer yours. Also, the 2nd one it gives you a feel of a bad dream or a nightmare, one of the symptoms of PTSD as well.

The next source I used is called ¨Moral Wounds of War¨ which is basically a interview about a rifleman in Afghanistan, and also tells the story of some doctors and some other veterans that have PTSD or are specialist in PTSD. The first quote from this source is this one here ¨LT. COL. ERIC OLSEN: It’s a hard place where you are asked to do some very difficult things, and once you’ve crossed those lines it’s hard to navigate back. It is a soul wound. It’s definitely a soul wound.¨. The 2nd quote is ¨DR. JONATHAN SHAY: Well, that idea has a great pedigree, and I’m afraid it’s complete crap. It is simply wrong. Moral injury causes good character to become deformed.¨. The 3rd quote is ¨SEVERSON: For too many veterans, coming home doesn’t end with kisses and hugs. Now there is an increasing awareness and some say an urgent need for America and Americans to step up and share the pain of our returning veterans and help them reclaim their lives.¨. I liked this interview because it is this guy that has PTSD and he is talking to doctors and another guy that has it.

The 3rd source is just a couple of examples from storycorps which are videos about war veterans from Afghanistan to Vietnam. Quote #1 is ¨Before he came home we used to hold hands but now I can't and I had to remind myself not to rub his back or sneak up on him.” Quote #2 is ¨I can close my eyes and see that guy collapsing with his hands up, and I think about that kid often.¨. Quote #3 is ¨I had white gloves on and a uniform with my medals but I felt dirty, you know I thought I was gonna die in vietnam but I didn't half to go back there I had my ticket punched by my nephews blood and I felt that I failed him and I failed my family and uh I still feel guilty to this day.¨. These videos were my favorite source because there were so powerful some were with their families and others were describing family members.

PTSD is once again a disorder brought upon people that were in war and battle. My first source were poems that I thought gave you visions or images on PTSD. The 2nd source was a interview with a veteran that had PTSD and he talked with doctors. The 3rd source is about vets with PTSD that discuss their stories. So hopefully this essay gives you some more info on PTSD.

Advanced essay #3 - Keith Hodge (How social media thinks of the olympics)

Posted by Keith Hodge in English 3 · Block/Franz/Taylor-Baranik · E Band on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at 11:40 am

Introduction:

My paper was about how social media thinks about the olympics and finding sources for this was not that hard. The two sources on social media were my starting points and I thought I can do it on social media itself but that topic is to broad. The one source I had on social media was about what is the american identity according to social media still a little to broad. Then I came across an article on how some olympic athletes compete with other countries even though they are a citizen in another so that made me think how would social media think of that and then I thought of my topic how does social media think of the olympics.

Essay:

The olympics are always a must watched event for the world whether it would be summer or winter and people love it. The olympics have been around for almost 120 years which is very impressive. While facebook and twitter have been around for about 12 years. Facebook came around during the 2004 summer games while twitter came around during 2006 winter games so facebook has seen 4 summer and 3 winter games while twitter has seen 3 summer and 3 winter games.

So if you have not figured it out by now my topic is how social media thinks about the olympics. Those two kind of make sense in a way because the olympics are a big event that happens and also social media is so huge now and if something happens in the olympics then social media talks about it and it will trend and go world wide. For example someone wins a couple gold medals or they become the best olympian ever such as michael phelps winning his record 28th olympic medal and 23rd olympic gold medal. Or even the two diving pools turning green went viral on social media even though it got annoying people loved it and kept sharing it.

The first source that I read was Ghosts in the machine it is a article about social media and how we mourn the dead. In ghosts in the machine, Jenna Wortham points out how social media is the quickest but worst way to announce a death. ¨ Social media seemed to be the quickest way to let people know why I had disappeared and why I would continue to be a ghost in my own way. But it felt wrong, even ghoulish, to announce the death of a parent in the same venue I might a new job. ¨. When I picked this quote it stood out because even though it is the quickest way it is the strangest way to share a death and social media is one of the quickest things that is why I chose this source and the quotes from this source.

In ghosts in the machine, Jenna wortham argues how the mourning process is longer on social media. ¨ When funneled through social media, death lingers longer than a traditional mourning period might call for. ¨. This quote was also very interesting to use because on social media the mourning period is much longer than the normal one. The next source is from Why some olympians compete against their home country.

In WSOCATHC, Matt Vasilogambros claims that switching nationalities is spirit. ¨ But is switching nationalities just to compete in the games in the Olympic spirit? ¨. This quote stood out because this is someone saying is this spirit or not. In WSOCATHC, Anne Donovan writes about how if you’re born here you play here.

¨ If you play in this country, live in this country, and you grow up in the heartland and you put on a Russian uniform, you are not a patriotic person in my mind. ¨.This quote stood out and also I kind of agree and disagree at the same because if you are born here play here but if that is the only way to compete in the olympics then go right ahead. The last source is The american identity according to social media. In The american identity according to social media, Nickolas Jackson illustrates that infographics are describe as a hodgepodge.

¨ Infographics are always a bit of a hodgepodge of statistics culled from a variety of sources. ¨. This quote stood out to me because a hodgepodge is basically a confused mixture of stuff so food or other items but this is a hodgepodge of statistics from a few sources. In The american identity according to social media, Nickolas jackson believes that social media has learned a lot about us. ¨ Over time, those networks have learned a lot about you, about us. What do they know? ¨.

This quote stood out to me because of the way it is worded and I don’t know but the author may be trying to tell us that social media has really developed into something big and that was my whole point. Now the conclusion like I said before my thesis is how social media thinks about the olympics. Obviously the olympics are one of the biggest events in the world and when things in the olympics happen they will go on social media which can cause negative and positive effects such as an error or blooper can go viral on social media which can cause cause negative and then a career accomplishment or world record can also go viral on social that same day and cause the opposite effect which is positive. So really what I am saying is social media influences life because what you do infuses your life and what these athletes do influences their career and lives as well.

Wortham,Jenna.Ghosts in the Machine: The New York Times Magazine,2015 Vasilogambros,Matt. Why some olympians compete against their home country: The Atlantic,2016 Jackson,Nicholas. Infographic: The American Identity According to Social Media: The Atlantic, 2011

Advanced Essay #2: Keith Hodge

Posted by Keith Hodge in English 3 · Block/Franz/Taylor-Baranik · E Band on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at 2:24 pm

Introduction: My literacy experience was something very different from everyone else I wanted to do something with confidence and something I liked as well which is hockey and I did a hockey science fair experiment in 8th grade and it boosted my confidence and that same year that very next month I got into SLA as well and I also won a poem competition in may and then graduated in june all of these boosted my confidence.

Essay: This my literacy experiences I notice that some people who are not that confident such as me and need a extra boost such as completing awesome project you become more confident and this experience I was pleased and confident by the ending result and also the process of it when I had to a science fair in middle school but I also did 2 other science fairs in 6th and 7th grade and also 9th and 10th but then in 8th grade I had the perfect idea. I shoot 2 different pucks ice and roller hockey puck then also I used 2 different sticks both ice hockey. I shot them from the same place and saw how far it went down the rink which was a roller rink. I forgot which one went the farthest but I think it was the roller because it was on a roller rink with a roller puck.

I then went to school to present for my science class I was anxious but I enjoyed explaining my topic because I know this type of stuff. The next part which was kind of cool for me was I believe a few days later my science teacher announced to us that the person that will be representing gold group at the carver science fair which was me I was very happy it felt I just won the stanley cup.

We then went to school the day of I was very nervous the night before the office called my writing class and told her for me to come down for science fair. My mom was down in the office and told me we are going to take the bus to the subway and then wait for your science teacher and the other kids in science fair. I buzzed with joy as they came we then went down the steps in to the subway then on the Broad street line and then off the Broad street line and then on another subway then we were at temple it was like ¨ The wilderness dried out our tongues¨ the subway was so fast the wind hit our tongues and face. As soon as we got up we met up with my dad who was also coming to see me as well then we walked around a little more around campus.

We also ate to we went to a little pizza place near the fair but I did not get pizza I got a cheesesteak wrap which was like a thousand men dancing on my taste buds. While everyone else ate pizza My parents and I were eating other things. After that we sat there for a while before we went to the science fair. Then we were on the way and for this year the science fair was not at the basketball practice facility but the football team practice facility I walked in and I was amazed to see it.

I said goodbye to my mom and dad and they said good luck my science teacher then told us where to go he said it was organized by the type of project you did so I did a physics type and it was all the way in the back of the facility in the 3 last row. I went around and talked to my friends from school and they said dont worry you will be fine. Then after that I just kept looking at my board and other boards that kids brought trying to see who has the best board in the whole science fair. The most terrifying part was talking to the judges they were coming closer and closer to me it was like being in a scary house just scare me already instead of taunting me.

Then finally it was my turn asked so many questions like I was suspect for the biggest crime ever committed. They asked about the sticks and also some smart and common sense questions to which were the worst for me some other ones were about the pucks and sticks themselves to. Then the questions were over and I just sat there for 4 hours and played on my phone. Then it was over and the loud speaker said thanks for coming you will get your participation awards soon which made me happy and then my parents drove me home while my classmates had to take the subway back.

When I got home my parents were still very proud of me for this science fair. Then the year went on as usually 6 months down and 4 to go. Then on my last day ever at Sharswood elementary I received my participation award along with my other graduation awards and my teacher said congrats to me and gave me the award and I felt like ¨superman breaking through a door¨. In conclusion I believe that I became confident by the end of this project because I did good in the end and because my family and friends helped me as well.

English 3 Essay

Posted by Keith Hodge in English 3 · Block/Franz/Taylor-Baranik · E Band on Sunday, September 25, 2016 at 12:50 pm

At my house I opened up the draw and got the jersey whether it is old or new I always get excited when I put it on. Then I get the extra stuff such as a hat, wig, beads, and rally towel which makes me extra pumped. Then the next thing is me calling my dad to tell him I am ready to go. We begin to talk about Stats on the game and how they are going to win which always helps us stay positive.

Then that moment when I enter the subway and see the logo is very cool everyone is talking about the game and your pulse begins to rise up. Then the train speaker says Next stop AT&T Station and sports complex then they announce the stadium names. Everyone begins to stand up then the station comes into sight and then when the doors open it is like sharks smell blood they come out. You go up the escalator and then walk out the door and bam the stadium is right there you begin to walk up and you see more and more orange.

Then you walk in the doors go through the metal detectors then you give your ticket to the usher he scans it then you are in you hear that beep of the scanner then you’re in and it is the best feeling ever. When you go up the escalators it is cool you see all the players names and numbers then you start to feel excited. So as you get through that entryway and you feel that blast of cold air it is like the best AC ever and you’re not hot anymore. Then you see that beautiful rink and wherever you sit you can see it which is cool as well. Then the game starts to begin and those red seats start to turn to orange and more orange which is awesome.

Then the players start to come out and the crowd is getting into it and my pulse begins to rise. Then the players are introduced by the Lou Nolan and then the national anthem by Lauren Hart Which during the season is The star spangled banner and during the playoffs god bless america with a split screen of Kate Smith which is great. Then everyone is is so happy and cheering. Then the mohawk puck comes and says flyers then the road team and then now so an example of this would be flyers rangers now.

Then Lou Nolan says let’s get ready for some hockey than puck drop starts. Then it is officially game time and then I am excited. You hear all of those great sounds the hits on the boards, the players stopping on the ice and then the ice shaving going everywhere then the tape to tape passes and then the players shooting the puck to the goalie the 2nd best sound ever but the best sound ever is when the puck hits the crossbar. The fans start to cheer which also makes me excited during the game.

The worst part and most exciting part of the game is when the players shoot and shoot and shoot on the goalie and the fans keep saying ooh and aah like a thousand fireworks are going off below their feet. Then when the period comes to an end my heart can now rest for about 20 minutes we walk around and get some drinks such as the best ice tea ever that always rest on my taste buds because it is so good. The next thing is the crab fries which do have a kick to them that is why there is a cheese sauce with them. Then the game starts back up.

Then After the game finally starts back up and my heart is kind of back to normal now the other team scores which is a sword through the heart. Then as Lou Nolan announces the name of the goal scorer and then the fans start booing and booing. After that the players are getting scruffy and mean so of course we get excited and we wait for a fight so then as you can guess it comes the fight. It is over and then the crowd is energized and pumped up as well then Lou as you know announces the penalties then the game continues Then the end of the period.

As we wait 20 minutes my breath smells like crabs, cheese and of course ice tea the 3rd starts. The fans are rowdy and excited then finally after about 20 hits that looked very painful there was the tying goal. The game went to OT which means overtime the most scary experience ever it is 3 on 3 sudden death hockey for 5 minutes but it is the worst 5 minutes of your life. After that if no one scores the 2nd most scary experience ever is the penalty shot shootout a 1 on 1 shooter vs goalie. 1st round no 2nd round no 3rd no and then 4th the flyers score and they win 2 to 1 I am so happy and so excited. Then the sad part I half to put my jersey away for next game.

ILP blog post Keith Hodge

Posted by Keith Hodge in Advisory Sophomore - Menasion - adv on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at 11:33 am

Hello everyone well my ILP is the same as the last time The Franklin Institute. First of all it is working out well everyone is so nice to me and they really have brought me in as a member of their TFI family. I have also received my TFI ID which I can use to go anywhere and just to name a few the basement (volunteer area) 5th,3rd floor and I can get into any traveling exhibit. Another cool thing I was able to do was create a scavenger hunt for the freshman which is in the comments if you would like to complete it for yourself. And lastly another thing I was able to do this year was go to the annual TFI Christmas party which was cool and also able to see my favorite scientist ever Bill Nye the science guy.

So overall I have a really cool ILP

P.s: Please feel free to ask any questions or comments about the scavenger hunt below.

Lincoln's death affected the reconstruction era

Posted by Keith Hodge in African American History - Jonas - A on Thursday, April 30, 2015 at 12:03 pm

      Lincoln's Assassination

            ---------------------------------------

            Affected the African Americans

              and the reconstruction era

              ------------------------------------------------------

Millions of U.S citizens in grief as they start to pay their respects and say their goodbyes to the 16th  president of the united states, Abraham Lincoln. People from across the United States will go to Washington Dc, Baltimore Md, Philadelphia Pa, New York City, Albany, Buffalo Ny, Cleveland, Columbus Oh, Indianapolis, Michigan City Ind and Chicago, Springfield Ill for public viewings. in other news the new duties of President Johnson he has taken away forty acres and a mule away from the African Americans which is like taking their freedom away just like when a baby chugs down there bottle and gets it taken away just when moments after receiving it.

Artist statement

My topic was about did Lincoln’s death affect the Reconstruction Era and I chose to do a broadside flyer. I chose this topic because no one talked about this particular topic.  The topics that were mostly about were how Lincoln freed  the slaves. Also, how did the Emancipation Proclamation affect the outcome of the war and my topic was interesting.  The reason I put a picture of Lincoln in his casket is because this flyer is about the places his funeral procession would be at for his final viewing.  This was important to the american people since Lincoln was the first american president to not only die but be murdered during his presidential term.  It was also a great show of respect for a man who was not only a great leader but to help bring about an end to slavery.  Lincoln was a humble man who was able to maintain that in spite of and during his years of presidency.  I feel that our world as we know it today is heavily impacted  because of all that President Lincoln did to help free the slaves.  It made it so that all people no matter what race can be free to live wherever and however they want in todays day and age.  The funeral procession that was given to this president was one of great love for a man who truly did help to change the world not only then but in present day as well.  I would certainly not like to even try to imagine what our world would be like today if not for President Lincoln.
