Topic Summary:
The goal of this project was to develop a deeper understanding of long-distance running plans and athlete development, blending these together to provide athletes training plans unique to their needs.
Project Abstract:
This project was inspired by my senior year cross country season, when I was responsible for creating training plans for myself and several other athletes. Although I have created training plans for myself in the past, this was the first time I was responsible for creating training plans for others. This not only required me to research the fundamentals of training, but also to learn each athlete’s unique strengths and weaknesses. I worked with Fred Brown, an assistant-coach at Germantown Friends School, whose program has been very successful (having one or more national qualifier every season). Working with Coach Brown I learned the importance of communication and inquiry in creating athlete specific training. As a result of this project, I was able to further my understanding of individualized coaching methods. I hope to continue this work both as an aspiring coach and by sharing my findings with the runners at SLA.

Story Through Sketches
Initially I wanted to create a film with minimal character dialogue – similar to Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Seeing as how my quarter three benchmark was an analytical essay focusing on Kubrick's works, I decided I wanted to do something different and step outside of my creative comfort zone. Recently I've developed an appreciation for George Condo's paintings (You can check out some of his work here, here, and here). Through his works I have come to appreciate paintings and illustrations as mediums to tell stories. What I wanted to with this project was tell a story simply through illustration.
I knew facades would be a focus of my story, but I was unsure of what story to tell. I decided that instead of creating a story to illustrate, I would create my story by illustrating.
I began my story by creating a few rough sketches. First I drew a man who had an eye encompassed in a rectangle. Then a blank bottle. Finally I drew a man of utter absurdity. In these sketches I saw three themes: facades, dependence, and psychopathy. I decided that these themes would be the timeline of my story – beginning with facades, and ending with psychopathy. From there I took my rough sketches and began to give them character.
The man with the eye encompassed in a rectangle became a man of two faces in a tuxedo; the blank bottle became a bottle of bourbon. I didn't realize it at first, but I was taking pieces from Stephen King's The Shining – a film Kubrick directed, and giving it my own twist.
I really enjoyed this project as it allowed me to push my creative comfort zones. If I were to do this project in the future, I would do a few things a bit differently. I would choose to tell a story through more sketches and color. I feel that I limited my story's potential by sticking to only three sketches – though I believe that if I had created more the quality may have suffered. In the future I would also chose to create my story before illustrating.
My sketches can be found here. My story sketches are Final_Image_1, Final_Image_2, and Final_Image_3, while my rough drafts are labeled "Rough_Draft_x" Enjoy!

Dear Kelly Drive,
It is difficult for me to display my admiration for you in words, because for so long I have done so through a different medium. Sitting here as I struggle to write this, I find my mind slowly drifting to when we were first introduced to one another. Treading your trails one cold winter day, I was not quite sure what I had gotten myself into. I was told to turn around once I saw the Three Angles. I was confused. Was that a Charlie's Angels reference? To the right of the Schuylkill River I found three pillars with one angel statue on top of each of them. That day I learned that Three Angels were the landmark adjacent to Fountain Green Drive.
Trekking your trails more often, I began to notice even more about you. I noticed the fish hidden in the trees, only observable from Boathouse Row. I saw the house on top of the hill next to the road, just a little after Columbus Bridge. I even noticed the discreetly hidden Strawberry Mansion Bridge stairs.
I do not remember when exactly, but a point came when I began to understand myself through your trails. I found peace in hearing the pitter-patter of my feet against your roads. I learned what my limits were, and how to overcome them. Through patients and perseverance, I learned that no matter how formidable an obstacle may seem that it is conquerable.
Thank you for exposing me to running.
Macaroni
Ingredients
-Three to four cups of elbow macaroni
-Sixteen ounces of sharp cheddar cheese
-A stick of butter
-Can of Evaporated Milk
-Tablespoon of salt
Materials
-One casserole dish
-A large pot
-An oven
Steps
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2. Boil a large pot of water and place a tablespoon of salt in the mix
3. When the water begins to boil, put three to four cups of elbow macaroni in the pot.
4. Boil the macaroni until it is tender (you need to taste-test the macaroni to make sure it's good-to-go)
5. Butter a casserole dish.
6. Put the macaroni in the buttered casserole dish, then dice a stick of unsalted butter over the macaroni.
7. Add a cain of evaporated milk to the dish.
8. Grate eight ounces of sharp cheddar cheese over the macaroni
9. Put the dish into the oven for five to ten minutes until the cheese melts.
10. Take the dish out of the oven and stir the melted cheese
11. Grate another eight ounces of sharp cheddar cheese over the dish.
12. Place back into the oven for five to ten minutes until the cheese is melted
13. Take out of the oven and stir the dish.
14. Place the dish back into the oven for fifteen to twenty minutes until the top becomes a crisp brown.
The brand of butter I made my macaroni with is Land O'Lakes unsalted butter, which contains only sweet cream, natural flavoring, and milk. The elbow macaroni is San Giorio and contains only pasta. The evaporated milk is Carnation brand, and is simply dehydrated milk. The sharp cheddar cheese is America's Choice, which is unspecified whether it is HMO free, so I can only assume it isn't. This means that half of the ingredients in my dish are whole foods, while the other half are artificially produced.
There's roughly 522.5 (see below for how I concluded this) calories per every two ounces, which means that it's a pretty hefty meal. Your body will react different to this meal depending on your activity level. I can eat a pound a day of this stuff and be totally fine, while someone else might feel super sick after eating only a few ounces. Because it's pretty hefty in both fat in carbohydrates, a lot of what you intake from this meal is going to be stored for later use as either glycogen (for the carbs) or as fat (for the bulk calories from the cheese.)
The cheese and the milk were both processed, which means they were commercially developed. Processed foods like these can possibly come from across the country, which means there was a lot of gas used and C02 emissions emitted from where it was produced to my fridge at home. The same could be said for the pasta and butter though, since they were not produced in a farm out in Lancaster.
Since half of the ingredients in this dish are non-whole foods, it costs just under ten dollars to produce 32 ounces of macaroni. Compared to Wendy's dollar menu though, you could get a lot more ounces of food with that ten dollars. For example, at Wendy's you could get a Double Stack burger for a dollar, which has 158 grams (roughly 5.58 ounces). If someone bought six of them, they would have 33.48 ounces of food, and would still have four dollars left over to buy four four small frostys (298g or 10.51 ounces per frostys.) There's a lot of quantity in buying that sort of meal, but not a lot of quality nutrition, like there is in my macaroni.
Land O'Lakes butter is from Arden Hills, Minnesota, which means it could have arrived to Philadelphia by one of two ways - Plane (probably not), or a truck (probably). This butter then traveled 1,166 miles to get to Philadelphia, which is pretty far for butter. Someone had to drive 1,166 miles to Philadelphia, then back to Arden Hills to do this delivery, which is a lot of mileage to do for a driver. In addition to encouraging poor treatment of truck drivers by supporting Land O'Lakes, I am not supporting local businesses by buying from Land O'Lakes. This is something for me to consider next time I am in the diary aisle buying ingredients to make macaroni.
I'm not a nutritionist, so I am not entirely sure of the accuracy of my conclusion:
Since I put three to four ounces of macaroni in the dish, we can assume there's anywhere between 24 to 32 ounces in the dish. For the sake of simplicity, we are going to say there is 32 ounces in the dish. Since there's 16 ounces of sharp cheddar in the dish, we could assume there's a ratio of 2:1 ounces of macaroni to shedder. We used a whole butter stick in our dish (on top and below the macaroni), which means there's assumedly 3200 calories of butter in the dish. There's two servings in a can of evaporated milk, which means there's 80 calories in total. For two ounces of my macaroni then, we could say there's 210 calories from the macaroni, 200 from the butter, 110 from the cheese, and 2.5 from the evaporated milk, which means there's 522.5 every two ounces. It's a pretty hefty meal then, which explains why I really like to eat it to carb up.
Reflection
I think there are a lot of problems with our country’s food system, such as the convenience of unhealthy food, and the affordability of healthy food. Though these are very serious issues against our country’s health, I believe the larger issue is our government’s involvement in the agricultural industry. As a nation we have always found pride in our freedom in business. As our nation’s population has increased though, companies have been pressed to feed more mouthes than ever before without increasing production costs. In order to do this, companies are putting cheap and filling GMOS on the market, which consumors by because it's cheaper than organic. I believe the government should put in place bills that force these companies to produce organic foods instead. I don’t believe the government would do that though, because the effects would be devastating to our economy.
I think my role in the food system is to support and advocate for organic foods. I would do so by purchasing only organically grown products, and encouraging others to be conscious about what they put into their bodies. In order to actively do that though, I would have to start eating organically. I really don’t like grocery shopping and I have a love-hate relationship with cooking (I like making the recipe, though I hate finding all of the ingredients), which makes it difficult for me to eat organic. A first-step for me could be to start eating salad, considering that is pretty easy to make. I think it is in my best interest to go organic, because a lot of the runners I know have done so and are running faster times than ever. With that as a motivator, I think I could go organic, starting with baby steps.

Matt Ferry - What if...
Point of divergence - What if the Wright Brothers were never inspired by Otto Lilienthal? I chose this as my point of divergence, as Lilienthal inspired the Wright Brothers to create their flyers with persistence, always building on what went wrong before.
The Wright Brothers not creating the airplane means that technology would not have advanced as it did, meaning planes that could carry heavy bombs would not have been created, meaning the Cold War would have never began from the dropping of the atomic bombs. This would have changed the flow of the United States political system, as Lee Harvey Oswald would have never have been a Marxist, meaning JFK would not have died for his opposing views. All of the Kennedys would have been elected till the 1988 election, when Bush Senior would win. The Gulf War would have still occurred, as would 9/11, as planes would have surely been developed by then. If the airplane were not to have been invented, there would have been politically peace during the era of the Cold War.
I enjoyed this project. Taking an event and manipulating it, altering history was awesome, and reminded me of the butterfly effect; showing that with one small change in history can completely rewrite the world. This was also the most challenging part for me, as it was difficult for me to find a specific event to focus on; I had a ton of ideas that I really wanted to work on, but I felt like this would have given a fairly interesting future. The Wright Brothers being so moved by Lilienthal's pioneering to create their own experiments I found was particularly interesting, as it shows just how much someone can inspire another.
This showed me that the actions of a single human being can directly curve history as we know it. By taking out something, you're taking out someone who could have contributed to something larger, inspired someone else, or helped others create a network that would later inspire. Individuals make changes and cause progression, as apparent by this project. These individuals can also cause systematic changes, causing new ideas to flourish that can lead a movement or a group. These systems influence individuals, such as Lee Harvey Oswald, who following the Marxist philosophy killed JFK, causing a changed caused by an individual, with change brought to that individual by a system.
Looking back on this project I really enjoyed it. Thought, if I were to have done it again, I would have chosen a different topic. I was particularly interested with two topics; How history would be different if the atomic bombs dropped on Japan failed. The other being what if the Cuban Missile Crisis was not stopped in time. I would certainly like to do one of these topics, and maybe even a way to combine both of them...
Fourth Quarter Blog post
I started this quarter off creating an abstract drawing. I was undecided of what to do, as it had to be more than just an abstract image, it had to convey motion within it. I had many different ideas that I thought of doing, but instead of spending a large amount of time brainstorming, I just let my hand and pencil do the work. I started to draw an outline of a large circle, then began to draw smaller ones within. The idea of creating something black and white popped into my head, but that would be too tuxedo like. I instead started drawing lines that extended outwards from the center of the circles, which started to look a bit like needs coming out. I still did not see any motion within this drawing, but saw abstract thoughts were forming. I topped off my sketch by drawing lightening around it. When the lightening touched the points coming out of the center of the circle, they would turn the same color as the lines. If they did not, they would remain blue. Next I took this to black paper and used a white pencil to re-illustrate it. This allowed me work out any faults before moving onto my third design, where I added color to it. In this one, I decided to use four colors; blue; green; red; and yellow. I made the different circles in the drawing a pattern of yellow and green, as I think that is an attractive color combination. Next, I made all of the swirls red, and the lightening that touched it. All of the ones that were not red were blue. I really enjoyed this piece, because it allowed me to learn to use phases to create something, instead of jumping right into it and being disappointed with the outcome.
The next thing I made was an observation drawing of an unclose object. For this, I chose a hole in the wall. I can not give any particular reason why I chose the hole in the wall, other than it was the first thing I saw when handed the assignment. I did this drawing for two hours; I'm not sure why I did it for so long, but I did. I'm happy with the results, but I could have only put an hour into it and have done another drawing. I learned from this drawing to better manage my time to do more within a limited amount.
After this, I did some make-up work that I did not get around to. I made my abstract emotion drawings. This concept was difficult for me. I associate abstract with something that is indescribable, and I associate emotions that are visually describable. Combining something indescribable and describable was a difficult concept for me to first approach, but after thinking about it, I was able to muster up two drawings. The one I did has an eye in the center with a tear, being watched by many different eyes. This single eye that has a tear running is what all of the other eyes have their attention affixed on. For what reasons? They are indescribable. The only emotion that is describable is the eye with the tear. My second drawing I split between the center. One side depicts more vibrant and lovely things, while the other has things that are mournful and saddening. The only way to understand emotion in the second drawing is by looking at the lips, but without seeing the rest of the face it is difficult to understand what emotion is trying to be expressed, making this indescribable.
My next two weeks I had to make some alterations. The weather was too poor during those two weeks to go outside, so my drawings were inside the room. I used this time to try and teach myself how to drawing ceilings and floors during this time; more specifically rows of both. I've always struggled with drawing things that are drawn in the drawing far, then come up close. I was able to get the walls in the drawings down well, but the ceilings posed as an issue during my drawings. I ultimately decided to accept it as how I draw ceilings. When I originally drew my ceilings and floors, I did not particularly like them, but I do now. They are me.
The final drawing I did this quarter was an abstract of a face and a mask. The one inspired the other. For this I wanted to do something that extremely quirky, but interesting. For the face, which was a rough draft to the mask, I designed it in a way where the mouth took up about a third of the face, and there were several rows of teeth. For the eyes, I designed to have one horizontal and the other vertical. I put two eye brows over the eyes and completed it. As I was looking at the drawing as it was finished, I felt more could be done and removed to it. In the rough draft of the second one, I made it so there were only two rows of teeth, as the multiples in the other one were a bit strange. Next. I turned the base into a mask by drawing the dark spots under the lips to the parallel side. I kept the one eye hole on the right hand sign, as I liked it like that, and kept the other one unsymmetrical, but changed the hole to a circle. Both of these ideas have some sort of design surrounding it. The circle has sharp twirls around it, while the sharp eye has a flower on the cheek and an eyebrow above. I'm particularly proud of this piece, as I really enjoyed making it, and I think it came out pretty well.
I'm glad this quarter I changed my game. I felt that I accomplished more and pushed myself better as an artist to work with things that I was uncomfortable doing. I learned to accepted faults in things that I create, and realize that imperfects are art; in-fact, if something's perfect, it would be a pretty boring piece of work. the imperfections making a piece compelling and unique. That's what I like to think of my work for this quarter; it was unique.
Education
Que es la sistema de académico evolución en tú país como? Son ahí grado?
Cómo es secundario educación estructura?
Son ahí mandato grado?
Que es la estructura de universidad?
Que es un popular campo de estudiar en universidad?
Similar to my last conversation I had, one of my questions was wrong, but quickly corrected by the person I was speaking to. The person I was talking to Alberto was from Guatemala, and explained to me how their education system worked. The question was at first misinterpreted and he told me about his own experience in education in Guatemala, which isn't what I asked, but glad he did say. I meant to originally include a more personal question for the person, as I have done in the past, but it slipped my mind with this one. I found out that the education system is Guatemala is similar to our one. Small children attend something similar to kindergarden and at five begin to enter the basic cycle of education, such as a graded system. Following that, the children's academic life becomes more diversified, as they have more options to expand their education. Children between the ages of 14-17 are trained for a more specific. 17 year olds often then go to college to further their education, graduating when they're 23 or 25, similar to in the States.
In college, the general structure is that there are 52 courses that are often taken within the five years that someone attends, till they obtain their degree. Much like the credit system that we have our here. I found this interesting, because it seems that there's a similar structure of education that doesn't just exist in the US. My last question for my partner was misunderstood, but I essentially wanted to know what were popular universities, as how in the states we have extremely prestigious ones. I wanted to know if there was anything similar to the Ivy Leagues that we have here, or the Big Ten. I asked my question again, but my partner still did not understand it. I took it upon myself to look up the best university in Guatemala, and found that it was the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala, which was a very small school, with only 421 students attending. I found that very interesting, as it's even smaller than some liberal art schools (and even SLA.) Overall, this person was especially helpful with conversation, and I learned a lot about their educational system in relation to our own.
Spanish Blog Post Five Ideas
For my fifth and final week I want to focus on the system of education. This time I will be using sharedtalk, as I found it more effective to use than live mocha or friends. My question for this week is "how is education structured?" I don't have anyone from a particular country or background that I want to talk to answer this question, as I'm open to any place to learn.
-What is the system of academic progression in your country like? E/i are there grades?
-How is secondary education structured?
-Are there mandated test?
-What is the structure of college?
-What's a popular field of study in college?
Que es la sistema de académico evolución en tú país como? Son ahí grado?
Cómo es secundario educación estructura?
Son ahí mandato grado?
Que es la estructura de universidad?
Que es un popular campo de estudiar en universidad?
Government
en tú país, político sistema como?
cuando ley ridículo?
intersección entre governo y religión?
Es ahí algo como US senate?
Defectos en tú politico sistema?
The person I met is from Colombia, and her name is Violeta. I met her through Sharedtalk, which I will be using for now on to answer my essential questions for this project. Talking to Violeta, there was a lot of miscommunications and understandings. Some of my questions she wasn't able to understand very, as I wasn't able to word them well enough. Some of the answers I received were a vague and without an actual answer, such as the fourth question that I asked. I didn't get very much of an answer with that, as I don't think my parker was very prepared to answer the questions that I asked. It was pretty difficult to talk to her, as she wouldn't talk back to me in spanish when I would ask a question in spanish. I was able to find out a few small things though, which allowed me to research them and find out more. I found out that Ley Lleras was a bill that would affect how content was shared and downloaded, similar to the recent bills which were trying to be passed here. I also found out that Colombia has similar to the United States in structure of government, as they both have presidents.
My final question was never answered, but I understand how Colombia's government functions from this. This was my first time using Sharedtalk for conversation, and I enjoyed it much more than I did live mocha, or using friends of mine. With Sharedtalk it was so much quicker to find people to talk to, as I had several conversation request (I know, I'm quite popular) while I was talking to Violeta. For my final entry, I'm certainly using shared talk, as it was less of a headache than the other outlets of communication I had.
Architecture
This week my primary focus was on architecture. My original question was on terminology used for architecture, but that had to be edited to better fit the requirements of the project. For this week, my focus is no one general things involving spanish architecture. By asking general questions about architecture, I felt that I would be able to earn more than I otherwise would have, if I chose to just learn about general architecture terms. For this week, I have prepared five questions that I'll use to answer my bigger question.
¿qué son la cuidad estructura en tú cuidad?
¿Cómo es la casas en tú cuidad como?
¿Veritana estructura?
¿Tradicional edificio estructura?
¿Interior de casa?
For this week my partner was Miguel, someone who I met through Livemocha. Me and my partner chose to do our communications via e-mail, as we saw it was the most convent way for both of us. My partner told me to censor out his e-mail when I told him I would be uploading the screenshots of our conversation. To respect him, and have him as someone for possible conversation with, I have upheld his request.
20 Years
Week 2 - Past and Future
Before I did the conversation, I answered the prep questions. -
Cuál es tu tema de conversación?
De tema de conversación es pasado y futuro tenso. Yo necesito un refrescar en tema.
How do you anticipate your partner will respond to these questions?
They may not be able to understand them too well, as writing the language is not something they're beyond proficient in.
What are you looking forward to about this conversation?
Being able to talk to a close friend of mine in Español. (Not something I do often.)
What are you nervous about?
I'm a bit concerned about my friend's written spanish, as he's much better at speaking it than writing. It shouldn't be much of an issue though, as I should be able to understand it.
Acentos
Me: The first question is just about when I should use accents when writing Spanish.
Yuna-Chan: could it be, for accents, you mean acentos?
Me: Sí, acentos. Mi Español es maso o menos, ahí es pieza para mejora.
Yuna-Chan: I get it now, I get it haha :D
I can explain that to you. ^^ But I'm more comfortable explaining it in Spanish, so if you don't mind.. sorry >_<
Hope this helped you!(:
Me: Ah, tan hacer acentos ayudar en creación el consejo más distinguido?
And that was the conversation. Though I did learn a lot from this girl, she unfortunately never replied back to my other message, and I'm suspecting I'm going to have to find another partner for this week's question.
PSSA Theory of Evolution
Español Tres- Proyecto de Conversación
For my fourth quarter, I have been given an assignment where I have to look use social media to communicate with a native Spanish speaker, in order to improve my own fluency in Spanish. For this, I will be using Livemocha, with the possibility of using Twitter as well to reach out to native speakers. Livemocha is quite an interesting outlet for learning Spanish. Using the website, I will be able to find a native Spanish speaker that wants to live English, making it a mutually beneficial relation. The three goals I have constructed for myself are below-
-How to know when to use accents when writing the language.
-Shortcuts to knowing how to use past and future tense and the differences between them.
-Terminology for architectural terms. Architectural ideas.
As well as having three goals from this project, I also have an essential question, which I am hopeful to find an answer to at the end of this project – By using social media, how can I, as a student benefit from using these social tools to communicate with native speakers understand the language?

Having enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania as a Young Scholar, I was given many things from the University; the right to visit the many prestigious libraries, facilities, and events on campus. More importantly, I had to obtain a student ID card to fully utilize these unique components of my experience at Penn. Having a Penn ID card allowed me to fully utilize all of the resources at my potential and.. obtaining spray paint. My ID card for Penn didn't include my birthdate, but just stated that I was an undergraduate at the University. Seeing this as an opportunity to utilize rights and activities that minors aren't legally able to take part in, I decided to buy some spray paint, as spray painting and graffiti have always been a form of art I have had an appreciation for, after seeing Keith Haring's mural in South Philly.
Though I have a great appreciation of the late Keith Haring and the icons that he created, I wanted to create something unique that would have an association with myself, while sustaining my own originality. I did not want to do a tag or something of that sort, as I have no appreciation for vandalizing property with a tag. I begun experimenting with different stencils that I would spray paint. To better understand how to properly cut and spray, I often did simple, symmetrical objects, such as circles and squares till I become more comfortable cutting more complex stencils, as I did with the sniper one and camera shutter.
This project was essentially an adaption of my final second quarter project, which involved spray painting. I learned from that project using cardboard cutouts were not ideal to use as stencils, as they were difficult to cut, and got wet and weathered with each use of paint. I instead used stenciling paper this time, as it would be easier to cut, and much more durable, capable of dealing with bending and liquid, where the cardboard was unable to. By modifying the material used as a stencil, I was able to create higher quality artwork than I was able to produce last quarter.
The first stencil I created was a circular, cartoonish bomb looking stencil, similar in appearance to 'The Hundreds' iconic bomb. My bomb lacked a face though, unlike 'The Hundreds' icon. After creating this stencil, I had a request to create a Fluer De Lis stencil for Whitney. For this I decided to play it safe and not free hand the icon, but instead printed out a copy, traced over it on my stenciling paper, then cut out the stencil. The second stencil set that I created was inspired by an image I saw on tumblr of a camera shutter. This stencil I did entirely free hand, creating several different parts of the shutter, which ended at the center, to form a circle. This was one of my favorite stencils that I made. After creating this stencil, I made a stencil that was inspired by reading The Nuer, by E. E. Evans-Pritchard. I created a stencil of that was inspired by The Nuer and by Keith Haring's stencils. The results from this were a stencil that was similar to Keith Haring's work, but very different at the same time.
My final stencil that I created this quarter were a variety of different sniper icon ones. My process for this was to find various different circular objects, and trace them on separate pieces of paper. After I had a collective amount of different sized circles, I began to trace them all onto one stencil. My original idea was to just have a ton of circles, some that were sprayed, getting smaller and smaller. Though the problem with this was that I would be unable to create this sort of stencil. I know realize that this would have been possible, if I simply cut out the original circular stencils that I collected, but no matter, I was still content with the final result. Realizing at the time there was no other option than to draw two lines between the stencils to add the support and connect the different circles, my stencil began to take the shape of a sniper icon. I was happy with this result.
Towards the end of this quarter, I began to develop a serious interest in clothing. I've always been told I have quite an eye for finding stylish and unique pieces of clothing, and I finally decided to utilize my ideas for taste to create something. I began to develop and design my own clothing line. Most of which are hats and variations of denim jackets. I chose hats due to my new found obsession with Supreme brand hats and their unique, 5-panel designs. Denim jackets I have always loved to wear, and see them as a very versatile piece of clothing. Though my ideas for these hats and jackets are still developing, I have created two hat designs, and one jacket design. The first hat design is a five panel hat with a more modern cameo design, that is on the brim of the hat. The primary color of the hat comes in three different colors, black, red or orange. The second hat design is different from the other one. The brim and sides of the hat are a navy blue, while the middle of the hat is a fluorescent red. I chose to do a dark-highlight color scheme for this hat, as I believe if the hat was just navy blue, it would just be boring, and if it were just fluorescent red, it would be too obnoxious to wear. the navy blue helps tone down the effects of the red.
Though I was never able to create my own iconic graffiti insignia, I was happy with where the project went. Graffiti was a temporary interest of mine, but I'm hoping that designing stays with me beyond the third and fourth quarter. For the fourth quarter I plan on expanding my design and items in the collection that I have created.
Mferry - Environmental Unit
-I enjoyed this project a lot. My group dynamics with Cheyenne worked very well, but with other members it could have gone smoother. The difficult part of this project was finding reliable resources that gave us different information on the different animals that the Garbage Patch kills. The only information that we found out about the size of different countries in comparison to the Patch was found and created on our own, but taking the Square KM of the Patch and comparing it to different countries.
There's many different things I would do, if I were given the time, resources and information. If I were to do this info graphic again on the same topic, I'd include different ways to show information. The way that I wanted to originally show the size comparison of the Garbage Patch to the other countries was by placing the countries inside of the garbage patch, visualizing just how large it is in comparison to countries around the world. I would also like to have more specific information on what exactly is thrown in the patch, and maybe including the different materials and brands. For instance, if this is the case, I could show that the largest concentration of soft drink bottles in Coke-a-Cola, rather than Sprite or another company. I could also then use this information to help petition or protest against these companies for them to create more biodegradable materials, or to have more effective recycling opportunities. There's many different things I would like to do, but for my first ever infographic, I'm content with it.

Quarter Review
For this quarter I did three assignments and started on a fourth My first one was creating large clear objects, which was challenging for me. Drawing well shaped geometric shapes has never been a specialty of mine; while it was very difficult, I enjoyed being able to find weak spots in my abilities in my artist. The other technique I saw a weakness in mine was shading on large objects. I'm able to do shading easily on smaller objects, because I'm working with less space than I was on this piece. Getting proportional shading was a difficult. I enjoyed this assignment a lot, because it showed where I can improve.
After doing this assignment, I decided I’d do another charcoal piece. For this one, I did an alligator eye. Alligators are one of my favorite animals, and their eyes are pretty incredible looking. The primary color of the eye is a picture of gold, black and brown, giving it a foggy look. I especially enjoyed this project, because I was working with something I'm comfortable with.
My third project for this quarter was creating a piece of art out of recyclable items. For this, I decided I'd create a lamp shade out of book pages. My original idea of what would happen was a light would turn on, then the shade would illuminate many different letters throughout the room. I couldn’t get mine to do this, because I had to use another piece of paper as a foundation to hold the pages together. I also couldn’t shape this well, because the paste caused the pages to develop creases. I enjoyed doing this because I was using resources I’d otherwise not use to create pieces.
My fourth project for this quarter was designing shirts with spray paint. I’ve always enjoyed spray paint art since I saw Keith Haring’s mural down South Philly street. I decided I’d create an Olympic ring template for the Olympics this upcoming year. I used cardboard for my cutouts, which was the most resourceful, but very unaidful towards making my prints. The shape that the rings came out in weren’t circles, but distorted circles with edges. After I finished spray painting that, I decided I’d do something that had sharp edges. I decided to go with a triangle for this. The triangle came out much better than the Olympic rings did, due to the sharpness of its shape. The cardboard wasn’t able to retain its shape well after undergoing the spray paint though. If I were to redo this, I would use stencil paper, which is being used for my next art project. For this stencil project I'll be creating cut outs, then spray painting them. I have several ideas, one of which is a stencil of New Gingrich with the words "VOTE STRUDEL" under it.

Welcome
The
war had ended over a year ago. Radio signals about a month ago. Minutes before
the first impending explosion, Robert Oppenheimer appeared on the television.
Standing at the podium in a suit with his porkpie hat, he cared a grim filled
look on his face. He looked at the camera before looking back at the top of the
podium, where his speech was. Taking of his hat, he began to read his speech.
"Hello,
America, Russia, and the rest of the World-"
He stopped himself, then began to speak again, with a penitence look on his face.
"When me and the team at Los Alamos
labs created the first atomic bomb, we created a peacemaker and the destroyer
of worlds. When we watched the test of the very atomic bomb, we knew that we
created a power that shouldn't be used in anyway, but we knew it would be used,
but we hoped not to a magnitude like this. To America, Russia, and the rest of
the World, I'm truly sorry for the creation of our demise."
All
radios and televisions went to static afterwards. Screaming, gun fire and utter
turmoil was all that could be heard through the thick, concealed ceiling of the
shelter. Sitting back in the seat at my single-seater dinner table, Leer looked
at the glass of water that was in front of him. Waiting for the slightest signs
of disturbance in the water's flow, signaling the beginning to the end.
The
glass fell over, with all of the water spilling out to the right side. The
books began to fall off of their shelves, covering the floor in an assortment
of titles and pages. The shelves began to rattle, shaking violently, with the
glassware in the shelves beginning to hit the ground below; The wire hung
lights shaking back and forth, to the breaking point. Leer sat there in
his seat, away from the razed environment that sat around him. The shaking, the
swinging, and the shattering began to cease. Everything layer motionless, with
not a sound being made or a movement. It was like time had stopped. Droplets of
water began to hit the table, which was the only standing object in the room,
next to the seated chair. The only sound was that of the chair running over the
floor, creating a hissing screech. The though that he could be the only living
creature for hundreds of miles, or possible the only one left in the world. His
mind was running into all sorts of places, and he knew allowing it to continue
would lead to regrettable results. He put his head down on the floor, looked at
his watch and closed his eyes.
That was over a
year ago. Leer has stayed in this unit since the bomb droppings, not
having set foot out since days before the occurrence. The thought of an
outside world without life was terrifying to Leer, what could be even worse,
there could be outside life, who reacted to him in a negative way. The food and
water levels in the shelter are imminent to run out soon, leaving Leer with two
options, dying of starvation in this shell, or exploring the outside world in
hopes of survival. While one option holds promised death, the other one lays
way for an unforeseeable future, where the unknown is. Sitting at his dinner table
with his hands to his head, Leer looks at his watch with, then back into the
distance, back at his watch, then back into the distance of his base, this
place that was his home for so long, but it wasn’t his home. His home, or
rather where his home once had sat, laid near the grounds of this base. What
lay left of it he asked himself? Did anything within his home survive the
explosion? He knew that none of these questions would be answered, unless he
got out of his seat and went above ground.
He removed his hands from his head, placing them on the table in front
of him. He began to lift himself up, rising from his chair. He walked over to
the kitchen cabinet that was filled with chipped and broken dishes. Feeling
around the back of the cabinet, he begins to pull out a rucksack that’s covered
in fragments of plate and dust. Leer puts the bag on the counter top underneath
the cabinet, going through the sack. Within, there’s a 32 oz bottle of water, a
first aid kit, a rain jacket, and a thin knife.
Closing the bag, Leer puts his shoulders through the shoulder straps and
begins walking towards the exit. Turning the vault like exit counter-clockwise
to open it, he stopped and dropped to the floor. What could happen if he
stepped outside? Would he die of radiation poisoning? Would it be a field of
raze? What if the bombs never went off, and the noises he heard a year ago were
from something else? He couldn’t concentrate, or bring himself to open the
door. The thought made him sick to the stomach, but he knew it had to be done. Without
opening the door, he would never know what awaited him on the other side. He
got on his feet, grabbed the vault knob with both hands, and tired as hard as
he could, while pushing forward. The door opened, and he fell through, landing
on something that has been unseen, but not forgotten - the outside world.
Putting his hands on the ground to get up, he felt a grainy material, like sand.
Leer got to his feet, taking in deep breaths, clenching his eyes closed. The
air was different than what that of the underground, it felt un-recycled, like
what was below.
No longer being able to take being without visions of what the new world
looks like, Leer opened his eyes wide. Before him was what was the neighborhood
he had once called his community. All that stood before were the remains of
buildings that had once stood. Once fully bloomed pine streets were blow into
charcoal sticks rising from the ground. The surface of it all was covered in
all sorts of debris, which would rise into the air when a wind came by and
picked it up.
Starring out into the distance of it all, Leer just stayed standing
there, motionless, barely breathing. The wind hitting his face, scattering the
remnants of what’s left of the place he once called. A feeling of abandonment
came over him, which was physically unseeable, but leaving him a mental
wreckage. He wanted to turn back around, to enter his shelter and die there,
but he was curious as to what this new world was like. Beginning to take a few
steps forward, he was about to find out exactly what this transformed land
held. The remnants of the buildings that once stood were charred pieces of
metal now. Pieces that once created the foundations for modern architecture
were now broken frames. Art and life was scorched to nothing. Stopping now, he
looked down at the ground, where outlines of a doormat were thinly visible. Looking
even closer, you could see the outlines of a few letters that had once been a
apart of the mat. Leer got down on his knees to examine the letters even
closer. He started to look at the letters closer and closer. He saw a “W”,
followed by an “E”.
“We?” Leer said to himself.
But there was more than that. He started
to see another letter, a “L”, then a “C”.
“Welc?”
More letters began to become visible,
with an “O” coming next, followed by a “m” and “e.”
“Welcome.”

As consumers, there's many things that we can do to show the company that we want their workers to have fairer wages. We can protest the store, holding informative signs, telling other customers about the tomatoes and to not buy them. Protesting is a good way to go about this, because it helps us get out message across in a passive way.
Citizenship Homework: Election Day
Quarter 1: Benchmark Reflection
https://sites.google.com/site/stampandsend/position-paper
The process for this project was timely. I wrote our position paper, and I had to find many sources for our project, arguing why mail-in ballots are better. I found sources that included statistic, charts and other information, all from reliable sources. After I got these sources, I wrote my paper.
I was Cheyenne's back-up for our video, which I was that star of. Cheyenne was the back-up for Alshya's portion of the project, which was our advertising, which Ronald was the back-up for. I was Ronald's back-up for his rebuttal paper.
I handled group dynamics well. I was helping my group stay atop of their individual parts, by checking in and making sure their work was completed.
Once my paper was done, I had all three member's of my group look over the paper, adding, removing or changing anything that they saw as needed. I went to them for feedback on my writing, asking what I could expand on when I couldn't think of more arguing points.
The best way to relay a message to a national audience is through media, whether it's on tv, the web or other, it's the best way to reach a mass of people, encouraging and promoting citizens to vote.
Our group decided on what to do our project on by arguing, and deciding that instead of doing a holiday for voting, we'll do mail-in voting.
In creating change, the individual is in charge of creating a new system, allowing for new ideas to be spread. In sustaining change, one needs to hold the same drive that they had when they first had the idea.
Before this project I only knew that we used electoral voting. I did not know why we voted on Tuesday, nor why we do the things we do. After doing this project, I now know why we do these things. It really showed to me that the United States has some trouble as a democratic society, and we could improve on our voting process, such as removing electoral voting and counting individual votes.

Matt Ferry - Immigration Visualization Project
- What surprised you most about this information? What seemed quite obvious about explaining this data set?
What surprised me most about the information was the laws created against Chinese immigrants and many other immigrants, locking down how many of them are allowed to come into our country. - Looking at the overall trend and incorporating what you know about the US presently, predict and defend the immigration trend for the next two decades.
I think immigration will go down, seeing the current situation our economy and government is in. It's very discouraging to come to a country where we're on the verge of an economic crisis, if we aren't already in one. My prediction is that we'll slowly begin to get less immigrants in the next two decades. - Describe how you made a decision on how to visually represent the information.
Originally, we were going to create ours in a Keynote, but that didn't work. Cheyenne suggested using smiley faces and frown faces, which me and Justin though were just silly, but then we gave it a shot and we're proud with our final results. It's a set of smiley and frowny faces, the smiley faces show a year where immigration increased, while the frowny faces show went it decreased. - What parts of group work were challenging?
Just helping Cheyenne out, because neither I nor Justin are at all experienced with using Photoshop. - What would you do differently if you had this project to do over?
I'd probably want to do something like a video. I think I'd have a lot of fun making a video.

- What is your refrán supposed to communicate?
My refrán is suppose to communicate very small/brief information about me. - What are you especially happy about with your first draft?
Not too much. I'm most likely going to edit, so instead of it being brief info, it has more meaning to it than that. - What would you like to improve about your refrán first draft?
Mostly everything. - What was difficult about writing your refrán?
Finding exactly what to put into it.
Where I'm From Matt Ferry
I’m from the place many of us come from,
and all of us live in.
I’m from Philadelphia.
I like to create things,
like art, ideas and inspiration.
I’m not artist or philosopher,
or someone that can come close to the words “amazing” or “perfect.”
I’m average at most things, it’s fair to say,
But I still like to do my best everyday.
I’ve put in blood, ideas, pain, and re-inviting
to get to where I am today
and I’ve still got quite a way to go
to where I finally want to be.
I enjoy the simple things,
that aren’t money or bickering.
I’d rather be outside,
than in a house,
an office,
a store.
I like to hike,
and bike
and run.
I’m competitive,
and I don’t know when to quit.
I like to say what I think,
without hesitation.
I’m a bit stupid,
and can sometimes be a bit of a dick.
They sometimes say the strongest of us are a sensitive,
which I am.
Sensitivity is a major part of me,
but isn’t one that I usually do express.
I’ve got a small group of friends,
who know this part of me.
They know everything there is to know,
from my flaws, to my strengths,
to even my greatest weaknesses and fears.
My friends are one of the most important things to me.
Humanities Portfolio 2011
When I read Lord of the Flies, I had to create a thesis paper surrounding an argument of my choice. The possibilities were endless for such a book, from barbarism to changing morals for survival, many issues arouse. What stroke me about this book was the different Political powers arising. From a Democratic party arising, to a "Let him have the conch! Let him have it!" -Piggy. (39) plead for a voice, I went over the transition in power, to a quote from Hitler relating to how Jack took on his enemy, Jack. “Demoralize the enemy from within by surprise, terror, sabotage, assassination. This is the war of the future.” -Hitler. When I evaluated the quote, I pointed out how Jack and Hitler had the same sort of tactics. Surprise and sabotage. Breaking the enemy down. "Jack uses many of the same tactics. His enemy inside would be Ralph. He became a part of Jack’s government, but then from within started to destroy, terrorize and create his own Government. He learned the weaknesses of others and their needs to create his own system of government that would be strong and deadly enough to take out Ralph’s. He started a war with Ralph from slowly starting it within and creating tactics against him." From writing this piece, I feel that my understanding of politics grew quite a bit. I was able to create juxtapose between a fictional story and real world politics, tying them both together, and pointing out their differences.
Earlier back in March, we were asked to write an Op-Ed on a subject of our choosing. Me, being interested at the time in the recent issue of nuclear energy in Japan, decided to do something around it. I started this assignment with nothing, but very little knowledge about energy. After researching various previous and ongoing issues with nuclear energy, I was felt confident enough to write my paper. I found not only new sources explaining to me the ongoing issues, but also Wikileaks articles stating that they were unable to- "Wikileaks, a website that's controversial for it's amount of leaked Govt. documents has information stating that these Nuclear power plants were incapable of taking hits from an Earthquake." After I talked about some pervious issues, I went into current issues such as France, "In France, they have fifty-eight operating nuclear power plants, and they get OVER SEVENTY FIVE PERCENT of their countries power from Nuclear power." After doing this paper, I then realized anyone can write a piece about an issue they feel strongly about.
Earlier in the year, I was asked to write a Monologue. I have never written a monologue before. The only thing I ever wrote even close to that was a play for Philadelphia Young Play Writes. I wrote my monologue partly based off of the idea of Danny Boyle's SlumDog Millionaire. My Monologue was on a poor boy in India living with Malaria, who lost his brother to the disease, due to corruption on a greedy Doctor's part. I decided I would keep my feedback at the bottom, just for you to see in different ways how my paper has changed, thanks to it. Towards the end of this project, it became a bit rushed, so I ended it on a happier note, "Maaran, I have good news! The Supervisor of the Hospital came by, and you’re going to get the treatment! you’ll be alright! The book? Yes, you can get it! Actually, I’ll have 500 rupees in a week, so you can get it! I have 100, see. [Waves money in the air.] Act Eight" than how the rest of the monologue was. If I were to redo this monologue, I'd change how I did the ending, and many smaller parts of the overall piece. From this, I learned anyone can be a play writer. All it takes is initiative, and in my case, some research.
In Mr. Block's class, we had many trials on a variety of issues. One issue that we did a trial on was Sweatshops. In this trial, our class was divided into five different groups, Multinationals, Poor Country Ruling Elite, U.S. Consumers, System of Profit, and Poor Country Workers. My group was the Multinationals, and we created questions for each other group, challenging their motives and asking why they would do certain things. In this, I was a Prosecutor, along with Catherine, and we asked the question this question to the US consumers, "Why do you still choose to buy from brands that use inhumane labor?" The group replied to us with these brands being their only affordable sources. From this, we learned the stories that each of these groups had to tell of why they were innocent. In the end, we had a distribution of 100 points per person to 5 separate groups to see who was the guiltiest. In the end, I believe the Consumers were the guiltiest. I learned from these trials, that we can bring real world issues into the classroom in a fun, but educational manner.
For my Quarter two English Benchmark, I had to create a piece of language. I had to create a piece showing different languages being used. My piece wasn't in the form of different languages as how we commonly expect it to be, such as how English and Spanish are different; My piece was on how sub-languages that come from Languages. Such as how some slang is deprived from English. I did this by talking about my advisory, and how "Conversation was still conducted on both sides of me by my peers. It wasn’t anything interesting, really. On one side of the room I heard more thought out
sentences like, “Haha, you’re absolutely right!” While on the other side I heard sentences like, “Haha, you so right!” This generally is how my advisory is, with some using formal English, and more broken down English. My main idea of this piece was that everyone says things differently, from sound, accent, and dialect, we all speak differently. From this I learned that I was capable of writing on language, which I was unsure of before I wrote this. I also learned that we all have different languages, and it goes well beyond English.
Over the course of this year, I learned a lot. I feel every assignment has shaped and molded by understanding to be more open, understanding, and stronger than it was before I entered the classroom in September. Many assignments made me understanding of things that I had once previously been intolerant of. I have this all to thank to Mr. Block for creating such wonderful assignments, and showing us how to apply ourselves in many ways.
Proyecto Q4BM
This project was by far more most favorite benchmark. It was all about myself. Hah. It involved me when I was a little one, me now, and me in the future. The best part to me was taking the photos from me when I was younger. Finding them, and scanning them was such a joy for me.
If I were to do this project again, i'd most likely make it into a physical book, and try to stay away from digital a bit.
Nuclear Energy?
The Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant is a prime example of the irresponsibility's of people when it comes to building the Plants. Wikileaks, a website that's controversial for it's amount of leaked Govt. documents has information stating that these Nuclear power plants were incapable of taking hits from an Earthquake. This was disregarded during the placement of the Nuclear plants. Because of this, Japan has been facing a server pandemic of Nuclear contamination from their drinking water to dairy products, the results of this disregarded concern are still growing in effect.
Belarus, a country that shares a border with Russia has recently invested their time into creating a Nuclear plant. Belarus is going to use Russian contractors for the creation of their Nuclear Plant. This plant is going to cost 9 billion dollars, which Belarus has gotten on loan from Russia. Belarus will most likely also have nuclear fuel supplied from Russia, and have their nuclear waste will have to be sent to Russia. This makes Belarus dependent on Russia for power, instead of becoming more independent. Their thrive to gain Nuclear Power has put them into a situtation where they’re relying on Russia for an essential, energy.
Nuclear Power Plants have the potential for causing massive amounts of destruction. The Chernobyl disaster was a Nuclear Power plant failure that happened in Russia back in the mid 80’s. At this plant, they were testing to see if the turbines in the plant were capable of producing energy. An unexpected incident happened where the plants power went down to less than 1% power. Afterwards, a surge of power came on, and the reactor’s emergency shutdown failed to work. The death tool from this incident is somewhere around 985,000, many suffering from cancer and various defects that were caused after the meltdown. Sudden changes like what happened with Chernobyl’s power, can drastically disrupt a Nuclear Power Plant. The city where Chernobyl Power Plant existed is abandoned now, with no one living there. Currently, it’s a tourist attraction to see the now abandoned city.
Even though Chernobyl happened over twenty years ago, anything is possible. In France, they have fifty-eight operating nuclear power plants, and they get OVER SEVENTY FIVE PERCENT of their countries power from Nuclear power. If a Nuclear Plant were to face operating issues, or even a meltdown, the results would be critical for the country. There are many health issues with contact to nuclear radiation, from cancer to birth defects, such as excessive bone growth, organ failure, and the growth of ligaments.
There are many other options for power, other than Nuclear. For instance, there’s Solar energy, which has become more affordable in recent years. Wind Power, which works incredibly well in windy areas. Hydrop-ower, which is powered by damns. Nuclear Power isn’t the only source of energy, and it surely isn’t the safest. We, as people need to use safe sources of energy to not only protect ourselves, but our environment.
Spanish 2 Project: Daily Routines
For the third quarter, I was assigned a project where I present to you a typical day in my life. This project was done over a three week period, where we created lines for us to act out, and edit with our peers. After our lines were edited, we were then able to record and create a video. In my video, I present to you my self preforming each part of my day, with a spanish voice over and subtitles.
I learned a lot from doing this project, both Spanish, and things that can be applied outside of class. One thing I learned was managing time once given an extension. Sure, the extension's great while it last, till very last minute you're panicking over the project. I learned a lot of Spanish from this. I can describe my day pretty well, and congregate these terms well after doing this.
Like most project I do, I like and dislike it. On one side I dislike it, because I feel as if I could have done so much more with it, like many other projects that I've done. On the other hand, I'm happy with the end result, which is a piece which presents my day with accurate Spanish and silly faces.
If I were given a second opportunity to do this project, I'd defiantly redo a lot of things. I'd add more parts of my day, better lighting, more creative elements…. I could make a list of things I'd like to do differently. Haha.
I enjoyed this project. It was fun. I got to go over my daily routine in Spanish, and create a video showing it! Sure, so parts of my final product were a bit sloppy, but it was pretty enjoyable doing. It had me actually think about why I do certain things each day.

Descriptive Essay
As we begun to get out of the car I looked at the surrounding area. It didn’t look like anything special. It just looked like another Hospital. Large windows, multiple floors and it’s name of the side. Nothing stood out, besides the name, “Nazareth Hospital.” My Dad cracked a joke.
“Tell them were looking for Jesus.”
I chuckled.
My Grandmother was in the hospital 3 months prior to now due to a urine block. This time she was in the hospital for a broken shoulder. As we walked into the building, I got a whiff of that hospital smell. That dank, old wood, and medicine smell. The interior of the hospital was a combination of Wood and Marble. The Marble was white with speckles of black and it covered the floor. The wood covered the walls and it had a 70s retro feel to it.
As we navigated our way to her room we found out she was sharing a room with someone else. The room was dark with just some sunlight coming it. Their family was in the room as well. We moved to the far right of the room where my grandmother was. She was happy to see us and had a plate of untouched food next to her that was from earlier this afternoon. She doesn’t eat often. The room was white with medical equipment surrounding the beds each patient was laying on and a curtain dividing the room into two parts. We talked about how we were and how she felt. Understanding her was hard. She suffered a stroke 9 years ago, which paralyzed the left side of her body. When she spoke it was a soft mumble and Apraxia of speech due to her stroke. I just sat and smiled and shook my head up and down as if I knew what she was saying and that I agreed.
My mom gave her a drink of water, several minutes later my grandmother got sick, which resulted in me almost getting sick. I felt noxious and wanted to get out of there as soon as possible. For the rest of our visit I spent most of my time waiting in the bathroom.
Time flew by and within 10 minutes we had to leave. The nurse came in to check her out and replace her uneaten lunch with fresh food. As we step outside of the room, my eyes had to readjust to the light from the hallways. I begun to hear, “beep, beep, beep” over and over again due to the various heart rate monitors dispersed throughout the floor we were on. We pressed the elevator button and waited for it to come to our floor. When it arrived and opened up, it had a metal interior and smelled like the hospital entrance.
When we finally arrived to our floor, I attempted to get out as quickly as I could. I don’t necessarily have a problem with hospitals, but I get sick around old people who are hospitalized. I navigated my way through the hospital as quickly as I could, till I was right outside of the hospital. I stood there breathing in and out air, till my parents came. We then walked over to the parking lot where the car was. The sickening feeling went away and I was ready to get out of there. We got into the car and begun to pull out of the parking lot. That was the last time I had to visit Nazareth.
She’s out of the hospital now and facing 2 options. Staying at home with her husband or going to a retirement home. She can’t make a decision, on one hand she could be in a safe environment, but she doesn’t want to live her life knowing that she is incapable of taking care of herself. Her husband has already been taking care of her for the past 10 years and so has my Aunt. Her only independence is being capable of living at home and not in a retirement home.
Her fear is being institutionalized and feeling that she can’t do anything for herself. She wants to feel independent and capable of making decisions for herself. The problem is, she hasn’t made decisions for herself in 10 years, since her stroke, it left her incapable of taking care of herself.
She made a decision. She decided she’ll live at a retirement home or how it was refereed as, “assisted living.” It’s a large step for someone of her age, her liberation of independence and her own private home, but from it comes good. My Aunt and her husband won’t have to sacrifice their lives to take care of her any longer. From this, they gained some independence that they didn’t have for years. It’s like America, actually. They liberated their independence from Britain and gained their own.
I think she should do it. After so many years of taking care of herself, then having family take care of her, it’s the best option for her. While, she may not like it at first, she’ll grow to like it. She’ll almost everything will be the same. She’ll have someone taking care of her and a relative visiting her. It won’t be different at all from what she’s been doing for the past 10 years, except she’ll live there. It’s a step in the right direction for everyone.
English Benchmark Two: Language
Language is how we communicate with one another. It’s how we show respect for those that we communicate with, and how we talk. Our language is made up of our dialect and accent. Our dialect and accents are influenced by our surrounding beings, by how people in the media speak. We all have accents, and talk in some sort of way influenced by our peers or role models.
It was the first day of school, and I wasn’t nervous or jittery with excitement – I was exhausted due to only getting a few ours of sleep the night before, but even though I only got a few hours of sleep, I was still out to enjoy my day, I wasn’t going to let tiredness be in the way of that.
I arrived to my Advisory for the first period of the day. The walls were completely stripped of all of the random assortments of math posters and various other posters. The walls were painted with a sky blue. The place would have looked so much better, if there were windows in the room. I sat with faces that I haven’t seen in a while. I sat with Tyler and Alex and the rest of our advisory slowly, yet surely came into the room. Shortly, a favorite of different dialects, word choice, and people were within the room. You could easily walk from one end of the room and here more sophisticated and quiet conversation, or go to the other side of the room and here a variety of shortened words and loudness. I chose to seclude myself between these two areas, where I could easily indulge in a conversation between either group of speakers. Tyreé came in the room and we greeted each other, “Yo man, I haven’t seen you in forever.” I said to him. We did the “Shake hand hug thing.” and sat down. Minutes passed, and Garvey and Sanchez walked in to the room. Immediately how I talked changed. My voice become more upbeat and much more louder and powerful. I walked up to Ms. Garvey and said, “Hey, Ms. Garvey! How was your summer?” She turned around to me to give me her undivided attention, “Hello, Mr. Ferry! My summer was great! I got a lot of training in and traveled. How about you?”
“My summer was pretty good. I got a lot of running in, volunteered, and got around the city abit. It was pretty sweet overall.“ I replied. “That’s good.” She said with a smile. “Now, go find a place to sit while me and Mr. Sanchez read the advisory memos.”
I took my seat away from the other students, because I enjoy being by myself in advisory, so I don’t get involved in a conversation. It’s not that I’m anti-social, but it’s because my advisory is very loud, and I’d prefer not to contribute to that noise. My advisory came a bit close, just leaving a few corner desk out of the way. I decided I’d sit at one of those corner desk. I sat there and faced where the Promethean board was, which was where Sanchez and Garvey were sitting in front of. I patiently awaited for them to speak, so I could find out my schedule and other information.
Conversation was still be conducted on both sides of me by my peers. It wasn’t anything interesting, really. On one side of the room I heard more thought out sentences like, “Haha, you’re absolutely right!” While on the other side I heard sentences like, “Haha, you so right!” Their were such various uses or words and dialects, it was quite pleasant to hear, well in some cases it was. I could have gone without the slang, or improper English, but hey, who am I to judge one’s language of choice?
We were just about to get rolling with the Advisory memo, when suddenly, Sanchez was interrupted by one of my peers. “Ahahaha, Sanchez you think you so funni!” It was in such a rude, and raised voice, which I found completely terrible. She used improper English when talking to a teacher, and showed no respect in her tone.
How one speaks to someone else is a form of respect. Language is a tool of communication, and an indicator of that person’s heritage, intelligences, and overall just how polite they are. The way the student spoke to Sanchez just displayed them as rude, uneducated, and simply disrespectful. When you speak to someone, you either create a world of possible respect and a good relationship, or you create disrespect and a horrid relationship. How you project your voice use your words, and your accent all play a role in how others see you. You could speak with a more Philadelphian accent, and get respect from certain groups of people, or speak more Black English, and get respect from people who use that language.
The language you use, is how one will be looked at, judged and will create a very large part of the first impression, or just reestablishing who you are with a group of people, like what happened here. She established that she was ignorant of the teacher with her word choice, and tone to the man. While I on the other hand established my respect for Ms. Garvey by my speaking toward her.
A voice is a very powerful thing. It speaks languages, whether old, ancient, new, or new-age, it help creates a powerful instrument, some are nicer to hear then others, and some prefer some over others, but think of them as instruments. Some prefer it well played and very long notes (words,) if you will, while others prefer much shorter notes (words.) Each voice has a different sound, accent, and dialect, which gives it’s own uniqueness.
