My Process Paper

Posted by Ronald Jackson in Capstone - Herman on Friday, June 7, 2013 at 10:34 pm

I knew exactly what the topic of my capstone would be by the time that I entered high school. I have had an interest in animals ever since my first pet dog named Rex. However, it did not stop with him. I was fascinated in animals of all sorts. I remember that my family would buy my books about animals. In particular, I would enjoy reading about reptiles. My interest in reptiles came about when I went on a kindergarten class trip to the Philadelphia Zoo, a place that would eventually become the headquarters of my capstone project.

After entering the Reptile and Amphibian House that first time, I noticed that it contained a variety of animals that were like nothing that I had ever seen before. All of its inhabitants were scaly. Some were legless, and others had shells. I had always seen pictures of reptiles, but finally being able to see how unique that they were in person gave me a lifelong curiosity. After leaving the zoo that first time, I was eager to go back and observe things that I was not able to notice the first time, given my young age. As such, when high school gave me the chance to volunteer at the zoo, I eagerly accepted it. This happened when I chose the zoo for my tenth grade Individualized Learning Plan (ILP). Being able to finally wear the zoo uniform to the zoo took my already present excitement about my internship over the top, as the animals would now look to me not as a visitor, but as a keeper.

After I had finished my internship, I felt emptiness in my body. I knew that for my life to once again be complete, I had to find a way that I could incorporate the zoo into my life. I quickly realized that the perfect idea was to have my capstone project have something to do with the zoo. Although I wanted to use it to learn more about what the zoo does behind the scenes, I knew that I could make a more productive use of my time with the zoo. Instead of being selfish, I thought that it would be a good idea to work with the zoo to make the already amazing experience that each zoo visitor has even better. While I was thinking about how to achieve this, I remembered what I did when I volunteered at the zoo in the tenth grade. Then, the idea came to me to improve the zoo’s already valuable education program in any way that I could. This one thought helped to shape how I was going to do my project.

I knew that although the zoo did educate its zoo visitors about the animals in its care, it did not really get the chance to take notes about how each zoo visitor responded to the information that was being presented to them. I knew at that point that it was my obligation to take observations on the engagement level of each zoo visitor that I came into contact with in locations throughout the zoo. This led my project to a halt, as I had to decide what my definition of engaged should be. However, after collaborating with the zoo, we decided that the best way to accurately judge the engagement level of a zoo visitor was by counting the number of questions that they asked. If they asked more than two questions, I would assume that they were engaged. If not, then I would assume vice-versa. To go with this, I would also record the expression on zoo visitors’ faces, the amount of time that they spent with a zoo presenter, and some of the questions that they asked. Taking the data was the activity that took the most of my time to do, as the zoo required for me to volunteer for at least eighty hours.

After I had taken data for months, I compiled it all together to come to a conclusion. I had originally planned to educate zoo visitors myself, but I ran out of time. However, I was pleased with the findings that I was able to gain. I concluded that the best way to present information to zoo visitors was by way of a visual presentation, as more questions were being asked under these conditions. I shared this information with the zoo in hopes that it would help them in any way possible.

Looking back, I am happy to have had the chance to work with my favorite place twice in my life to do something that I enjoy doing. Although doing a capstone may have seemed like work to some of my peers, for me it brought sheer enjoyment. This experience is something that I will carry with me for the rest of my life, proudly bringing it up when I feel the need to do so. It is my hope that next year’s seniors will have an experience as wonderful as mine.

Capstone: Educating Zoo Guests

Abstract: I have loved animals ever since I received my first pet, a dog named Rex. After going on a class trip to the zoo, my interest sprung beyond the point of return. I remember a zoo worker telling my first grade class about ways to help animals in the wild. At that young age, I never realized that certain animals species were in danger of going extinct. However, I did know that it was by obligation to spend my lifetime helping them. When I heard that we would be doing a capstone project, I senses that it would be the perfect opportunity to spread my conservation ideas to people that were willing to help. The obvious place to do this was at the place that I spent my tenth grade ILP, the Philadelphia Zoo. It was my hope that the zoo and I could work together to learn more about zoo visitor statistics and improve the experience of the zoo's educational program accordingly. Thus, I would record the amount of engaged zoo visitors (based on my definition of engaged) at select "exploration stations" scattered throughout the zoo. To compliment this, I took notes on the exploration stations themselves, recording whether information about the animal in discussion was presented in a visual, audio, or other type of format and how successful it seemed to be. After completing this project, I was able to share my useful data with the zoo, which allowed them to take advantage of it for future education methods.

Debemos escoger a somos iguales.

Posted by Ronald Jackson in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at 10:36 am

¡Hola! Me llamo Ronaldo. He vivido en Filadelfia toda mi vida.

Ronald and Mabintu's Attieke and Grilled Chicken

Posted by Ronald Jackson in Science and Society - Best on Monday, January 28, 2013 at 8:55 pm

Ingredients (for two servings):
1 Onion
1 Green pepper
1 Tomato
2 African hot peppers
5 Maggi cubes
1 Package Chicken tray
⅕ cup of vegetable oil

Instructions:
1.) Pour 5 oz. of dehydrated attieke into a large pot.
2.) Heat 5 oz. of water until warm. Pour the water in the pot with the attieke while stirring gently. Allow the attieke to soak for 5 to 10 minutes.
3.) Place the pot on the stove and cook for 4 to 5 minutes. Stir the attieke continuously. Use a fork to prevent the grains from sticking together.
4.) Turn off the heat and remove the pot from the stove.
5.) Place the attieke in a large bowl and wait for it to cool down.
6.) For the second part of the dish, place the chicken in a large Ziploc bag. Then, place the 3 maggi cubes in the Ziploc bag with the chicken. Keep the chicken in there for 30-60 minutes.
7.) Take the Ziploc bag with the chicken and put it in a refrigerator. You can refrigerate the chicken for up to four hour. The chicken will
absorb the flavors.
8.) Take the chicken out of the fridge. Allow the chicken to come to room temperature before
grilling it.
9.) Grill the chicken in a grill pan till both sides of the chicken turn brown and crispy.
10.) Place the grilled chicken in a plate and put the attieke next to it.
11.) Cut up the onion, tomato, African hot pepper, and green pepper and put them in a Ziploc bag. Put one maggi cube and
⅕ of vegetable oil in the Ziploc bag. Let it sit for 30 minutes.
12.) Put the mixture that is in the Ziploc bag on top of the grilled chicken and the attieke.

Analysis:

Our meal consists entirely of processed foods. The total amount of calories in our meal is 851.4. Since there are so many calories in our dish, if eaten often, the human body would gain weight and grow to be less healthy. The amount of fat in our dish is 18.1 grams. Since our dish is fairly low in fat, the human body is more likely to work more proficiently. It is also less prone to get diseases associated with a fatty diet. These include diabetes, heart disease, and cancer of the lower digestive system. However, if you ate this meal everyday, since it is low in fat, it can lead to problems like overeating, depression, and hormonal imbalances.

All of our ingredients were harvested in the United States. However, some of them are native to West Africa (African hot pepper, etc.). On average, our ingredients travelled 600 miles to get to Philadelphia. According to research, the manufactures of the ingredients to not harvest it organically.

The chemicals used can have a negative impact on the planet in many ways. One of these is pollution. As the chemicals get washed away, they end up in rivers. This ultimately decreases the quality of the affected river. Given each ingredient, the meal cost five ten dollars to make. This is about the same cost as a fast food meal.

One ingredient of particular interest to us was the African hot pepper. To grow it, a seed was placed in the ground. It was watered once everyday and sprayed with pesticides. After growing, it was picked, packaged, and sent to the store to be sold. After being purchased, it ended up in our dish.

Personal Reflections:

Ronald: One of the main problems with America’s food system is that people are lazy. In this unit, we have learned that people simply do what is most convenient when it comes to obtaining food. For instance, I remember one of the graphs that we looked at showed how far away the average person is from a supermarket. I realized that this distance often determines whether or not a person has access to healthy organic foods, as if unhealthy foods are closer, that is probably what the consumer will choose.

If I could make changes to my food choices, I would I would eat more vegetables. The reason is because I sometimes go days without eating them. I feel that if I ate more vegetables, I would become a healthier person. One impact that eating more vegetables would have is that I would have more lasting energy. Although eating foods that are high in sugar gives me energy, it burns out quickly. As a sprinter, this can lead to me tiring out in the middle of a race.

After realizing that I need to eat more vegetables, I am prepared to make a change. Now, I make sure that I eat vegetables at least once a day. I plan to increase my intake even further.

Mabintu: I have learned a lot about foods this unit; food that is good for you and food that is bad for you. We also learned about why some foods are the way they are and what the government has to do with the kind of food we eat. When we looked at the health/food maps we came to an understanding that most of the overweight/Obese people are in the poor areas of Philadelphia. We talked about how food companies be lying about in the food and the labels. We talked about organic food and how it is more expensive and you have less of a variety to choose from. That is why people spend most of their money on presses food because they cause less. I do not need to change anything about my diet because I usually eat homemade food. When I eat outside I do not eat health because it’s they only time I can eat something that I think is good. I do not eat unhealthy most of the time I eat unhealthy like twice a week or so. I guess I need to make a little change to my diet, as to what times I eat. Right now I eat any time I hungry and sometimes I eat even when I’m not hungry. That will have to change.

Mar Adentro

Posted by Ronald Jackson on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at 6:40 pm
Párrafo I: Introducción/Sinópsis

Creative Project and Self-Reflection

Posted by Ronald Jackson in Sexuality and Society in Literature - Dunn on Monday, December 10, 2012 at 9:22 am

For this project, I wanted to create something that was out of the ordinary. I figured that the obvious choice would have been to make something like a Keynote, but I wanted to challenge myself to be more creative. So, the idea came to make something that people could actually touch. At first, I was unsure of how to go about this. I considered making something out of clay but realized that this would be too time consuming. Finally, after watching a commercial, I came up with the idea to make a voodoo doll. I knew that this would well represent a theme from the novel and movie involving pain.

After I figured out that I wanted to make a doll, I had to figure out what specific themes I wanted it to represent. The best choice seemed to be sin and punishment, which occurred through much of The Scarlet Letter and Juno. The toothpicks that I wanted to put in the doll could be labeled, each with a different type of sin present in the two works that we studied in class. When all of the sin-representing toothpicks were put together, it would show how more sin equals more pain. This then led me to another theme shown in both the movie and book, self-condition. I realized that the toothpicks on the doll could also represent how the aftermath of added sins can take its toll on a person, as the doll seemed more uncomfortable as more toothpicks were added. This was much like the characters in the book and movie getting increasingly uncomfortable as they committed more sin in the eyes of the elite.

At this point, it was time to start making the creative piece. Since I knew it would be impossible to find a real voodoo doll, I decided to make one myself. After seeing a sock monkey online, I instantly thought about making a sock doll, which I could easily stick toothpicks into. To do this, I gathered up the materials, followed an online reference, and carefully constructed the doll. Even though the process went smoothly, I was not pleased with the final appearance of the first two dolls that I created. I felt that the limbs were not proportionate to the head in the way that I had hoped. As a result, I created more dolls and selected my favorite. After this, I labeled a set of toothpicks (each with a different sin) and randomly stuck them in the doll, finally completing my goal.

Now looking back, I am most happy that the final doll came out the way it did. It is one of the most unique products that I have ever created. I was shocked to see that it actually did look like a voodoo doll when completed. In fact, I was so pleased with it that I actually preferred making the doll, as opposed to buying one. The reason is because since I made it, I could make every aspect of it (its size, colors…) the way that I wanted it to be. On the other hand, my least favorite part of this project was the fact that I did not get to utilize my class time as well as I could have. The reason is because I would keep my supplies at home for fear that I would leave them in school. It is my guess that if I had brought my materials to school, I could have taken advantage of school resources, like specialized paint. As such, I will do this the next time I have a creative project.

Posted by Ronald Jackson in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at 8:51 am

Por: Ronaldo Jackson

¡Hola! Me llamo Ronaldo.

Si alguien me molesta, entonces soy antipático.

¡No parece normal! Desde entonces, he tenido mascotas.

Mi vida de citas es muy secas. No tengo a novia.

10% Project: Evolution of Birds

Posted by Ronald Jackson in Physics - Echols on Friday, June 8, 2012 at 9:51 am
For my 10% project, I focused on the evolution of birds. I made a video with Alice showing what a future bird species may look like after evolving to a new environment, compared with species of the past and present. The background includes an exaggeration of a future city after global warming caused water levels to rise worldwide. Modern amenities are included in the video to illustrate the immense size of the animals in question when compared with present objects. I have pictures of past, present, and future birds on a Keynote that compliments my video (seen directly below).

Since the world is gradually warning, I determined that future bird species would be larger than current ones. I came to this conclusion because birds in the tropics (like macaws), tend to be larger than birds native to cooler regions (like robins).

The Alice video is shown below the slides.

"What If...?" History Benchmark: Dr. King assassinated in 1958.

To view my project (which is a webpage), please click here.

Point of Divergence: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1958.

For my point of divergence, I focused on Dr. King getting assassinated in 1958. Historically, Dr. King was stabbed in 1958 by a woman named Izola Curry. In reality, he barely survived. However, for the sake of this project, the stabbing was fatal. As a result of the incident, America was altered. The Civil Rights movement became far more violent, as Dr. King was a supporter of nonviolent protests. Malcolm X stepped up and led the movement after Dr. King passed away, making him more distinguished in it.

As a result of the POD, the future America would continue to be segregated. After Dr. King passed in 1958, Jim Crow laws were once again enforced because the Civil Rights movement became violent. This forced the country to enforce segregation so that another violent casualty could not occur. Since the laws were enforced, African Americans eventually became more tolerant of them. The reason is because the supporters of nonviolence would never find another leader like Dr. King to bring them together.

I liked the fact that this project allowed me to think deeply about an outcome of a different situation. I have always found myself wondering questions like "What if this happened instead". This project gave me the opportunity to explore this thought for a lasting topic that I find very compelling, the fight for equality. It was however difficult finding primary sources that would support my point of divergence, as there were not many available. For example, it took me a while to find the psychiatric examination records of Izola Curry (the woman that stabbed MLK). There were not many primary sources about her out there, most were secondary. Luckily, I eventually found what I was looking for when going on a website about his life.

A very interesting fact that I learned was that changing the date of a small event could greatly change the world as we know it. At first, I didn't think that my point of divergence would have changed the world today by much because Dr. King was actually assassinated. However, by changing the date that it happened, the future turned out very different. There were so many differences as a result of my POD that I could only focus on one change. Otherwise, I would have been writing an entire book.

Systemic changes impart history because most historic evens occur that a group of people come together. As individuals, we are puny. But together, we are a force to be reckoned with. Anyway, I could have improved my project my going through a checklist. If I had made one early on, I could have checked my progress throughout the entire process. At the end, I felt like I was unsure whether or not I was missing something.

What does education look like in Peru? Conversation with Ximena from Peru.

My partner taught me that school Peru is much like school in America. We both take the exact same classes in high school. I learned that my partner is a very enthusiastic person, as she never lost interest in the chat. I learned that I enjoy talking to others, as the conversation lasted for a while once again. As we spoke more and more, I became increasingly interested in her cultural traditions. Once again, I was surprised that my partner was so friendly. If someone tried to chat with me about a school project, I doubt that I would be as cooperative as she was. I am proud that I learned something about school in Peru from the chat, as education is the key to success. Once again, I had a fear that my partner would suddenly exit the chat from boredom. Luckily, this chat was successful.

What does food look like in Salvador? Conversation with Denis Ronaldo from Salvador.

My partner taught me that food in Salvador is much like food in America, with some minor differences (like how it is prepared). I learned that my partner is a very enthusiastic person, although he did sometimes tend to loose interest in the chat. I learned that I enjoy talking to others, as the conversation lasted for a while once again. As we spoke more and more, I became increasingly interested in his cultural traditions. Once again, I was surprised that my partner was so friendly. If someone tried to chat with me about a school project, I doubt that I would be as cooperative as he was. I am proud that I learned something about food from the chat, as trying new foods can be a fun experience. I had a fear that my partner would suddenly exit the chat from boredom. Luckily, this did not happen. Next time, I plan to ask more probing questions.

What does communication look like in Colombia? Conversation with Karlo, from Bogota, Colombia.

My partner taught me that life for a teen in Colombia is much like life in America. When conversing, they text more that they talk on the phone: similar to Americans. I learned that my partner is a very nice person, as he invited me to stay at his house if I ever go to Bogota (although this will not happen). I learned that I enjoy talking to others, as our conversation lasted for half of an hour. As we spoke more and more, I became increasingly interested in his cultural traditions. I was surprised that he was so friendly. If someone tried to chat with me about a school project, I doubt that I would be as cooperative as he was. I am proud that I learned something from the chat. I had a fear that it would be useless because no one would actually accept my chat request. My follow up questions would be about their religious culture. I am curious to learn what they do for holidays. Next time, I plan to talk with more than one person at a time. This way, I can choose which conversation I like the best.

Proyecto de Conversación: What are sports like in your country?

Posted by Ronald Jackson in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at 3:23 pm

Pre-Conversation

  • The five questions that I plan to ask are:
  1. Why do you want to learn English?
  2. What are sports like in (the country)?
  3. Do you play any sports?
  4. Do they play American football?
  5. What do you think is a funny sport to watch?
  • I expect my partner to find the questions that I am going to ask interesting. I plan to make the chat as friendly as possible, so that my partner will not feel uncomfortable.
  • I am looking forward to learning about another person's culture. The reason is because I enjoy learning about foreign cultures. It is interesting to compare my culture with theirs'.
  • I am nervous that my partner will not be friendly. I hope that they do not say anything rude to me.

Post-Conversation

  • I spoke with Cindy because I thought that her name sounded friendly. She was also the only person that actually accepted my chat request.
  • I learned that they don't like sports and that they think learning English is difficult. I learned that the main sports played in Colombia differ from the main sports played in the United States. American sports like baseball aren't as common in Colombia.
  • This interaction helped me to move towards my goal of becoming more fluent in Spanish by forcing me to speak with a native Spanish speaker. Talking to my partner provided me with a lot of practice writing in Spanish.
  • I did well keeping the conversation with my partner going. I thought that the chat would be quite dry, but we actually had a good conversation.
  • I need to improve on using correct grammar in Spanish. I would start sentences with lowercase letters and occasionally forget to end sentences with punctuation marks. If I were to do it again, I would have wrote more properly.

a.) The final project went well. It is visually appealing and informative.
b.) My group and I never really had the chance to collaborate. It seemed that during each period, one group member was not present.
c.) Next time, I would make time after school for my group and I to collaborate. The reason is because I felt like we didn't collaborate as long as we could have. This would have resulted in a better final project.
d.)
  • Be Concise
My group and I were very concise. We kept the text to a minimum.
  • Be Visual
Our info-graphic contained colors that were attractive and eye catching.
  • Be Smarter
Our project was informative as it explained the assigned topic.
  • Be Transparent
In the info-graphic, we showed how the disaster affected those that lived near it.
  • Be Different
We could have made our info-graphic more unique. I feel like it was good, but nothing really made it stand out from others.
  • Be Accurate
My group and I did a lot of primary document research to make sure that all of the information that we used was accurate.
  • Be Attractive
Out project was attractive as it used eye-catching colors.
  • Be Varied
Our project was not very varied. We stuck to the typical components that needed to be included in the project. Nothing was really out of the ordinary.
  • Be Gracious
We didn't really add an emotional tone to the info-graphic. We just made it informative.
  • Be Creative
My group and I were creative with the certain colors that we used.

  • I chose this type of presentation because it looks the most attractive and meaningful, given the concepts utilized. It seems that when data is expressed to an audience, the fewer the amount of words used, the better. Thus, a single slide was ideal.
  • Individual change is when you set your mind to something. Systemic change is when a group of people set their minds to a universal idea.

The Truly Lonely

Posted by Ronald Jackson in English 3 - Rami on Friday, January 13, 2012 at 1:40 pm

The Truly Lonely

The sun was brighter than it had been in a while in Houston. But, this didn’t mean anything to Charlie. He knew that his routine would still be the same. His arm throbbed as he massaged the swelling. Nothing could make him happy about waking up in the morning. At about 9am, he left for the school. As he walked into the classroom, the terror began. His students were starting at him with a grin on his face. An array of chuckles swept across the room.

“Hey Dumbo, I see you’re hear late today,” said his students.

Everyone in the room laughed and threw a piece of paper at him. He turned his face to dodge it, but was so tired that he couldn’t succeed. After the paper fell to the ground, he reached to pick it up, but was to exhausted to do so. Then, he said something in a faint voice.

“If only they knew my circumstance, if only they knew how much I loved them and longed for a child of my own,” whispered Charlie. “Turn your books to page 50.”

“Yeah, right,” said a majority of students. All but one member of the class rose up and left the classroom. Tears appeared on Charlie’s face.

“Are you okay sir,” said the remaining student, Lisa.

“I will be,” said Charlie.

Later that day, Charlie entered the hospital.

“Mr. Reed, the doctor will see you now for your Testicular disease.”

Charlie entered the examining room.

“Hello buddy, let me check you out,” said the doctor.

The doctor stuck the needle in Charlie’s arm. His face grew pale as the blood was collected. He let out a gasp. As a result, Charlie looked down at the needle. He was shocked to see blue blood, as this had never been an effect of his disease. The doctor ran in fear. Suddenly, Charlie face turned red. His hair fell out and he grew weak. The doctor returned with a protective face-mask on.

“Get this man to a chemical vat,” screamed the doctor.

A group of nurses came in and grabbed Charlie. They threw him onto the gurney and wheeled him away. A few hours later, Charlie was released from the hospital. He was given a ride home by one of the nurses. After arriving, he found himself being greeted by his student Lisa.

“Lisa, what are you doing outside of my front door,” said Charlie.

“I just wanted to check on you sir,” said Lisa. “My friends were very awful to you. They put gasoline on those pieces of paper that they threw at you.”

“What,” screamed a still tired Charlie. “Why didn’t you say that sooner?”

“I didn’t have the chance to.”

Charlie became more coherent with reality as he remembered his condition. Not only did he have an unknown disease that interfered with his ability to have children, but he also had always been allergic to gasoline. He remembered that if he were to have a reaction to it once more, combined with the effects of the reproductive disease, he would explode in two days. Thus, he had only one day left to live.

“Lisa, I can’t talk right now.”

He slammed the door in her face and walked up to his bedroom. He looked in the mirror and touched his reflection before getting into bed. He lay in bed with his eyes open.

“What will I do,” he whispered. “I have no choice.”

His tear duct felt like it needed to cry, but that was far too strenuous, given his condition. So, he just lay there gazing at the darkness. The next morning, a knock was at the door. It was Lisa. She broke the door open and searched for Charlie.

“Mr. Reed, where are you?”

She ran up to the bedroom and found nothing but a stain of blood on his sheets.

“Daddy, where are you,” she cried. “Now you will never know the truth.”

She dropped to the ground before his bloody bed and cried until the floor was soaked with her tears.

Benchmark Reflection

Posted by Ronald Jackson in American History - Laufenberg on Monday, November 14, 2011 at 11:02 am
My Individual Part

The Entire Project

    • At the very beginning of the project, we collaborated and took a poll about what the project would be about. After that, we chose mail in voting and worked accordingly.
    • As an individual, we can state our ideas to others. This can influence them to also do the right thing.
    • At the beginning of this project, I didn't think that a solution to getting more people to vote could occur. However, after digging deeper into the options, I noticed that America still has hope. However, it seems unlikely that citizens will actually perform these options.
    • We decided to make the campaign simple, but not powerful and stern. This will allow the reviewer to feel comfortable, but be very focused on the topic at the same time.

Voting Interview Questions and Responses

Posted by Ronald Jackson in American History - Laufenberg on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 7:53 am
Names of Interviewees: Kate and Brian
Place of Interview: Mitchell Elementary School (pictured below)

1.) What motivated you to come out and vote?
I was motivated because back in the day, my people couldn't vote. After they endured dogs and hoses just so that I could go out and vote, I want to do so. Besides, I think politics is interesting.

My wife keeps telling me that I need to vote, so I did.

2.) What would you like to see changed in our political system?
I would like to elect an honest politician. So many of today's politicians just say what will make everyone happy, without doing anything.

I don't like the fact that election day is not on the weekend. I feel like this is all a waste of time.

3.) Do you vote in every election? (How regularly do you vote?)
Yes, I vote in every election because some of my ancestors could not. I just feel that it is my duty to continue to vote, since they never will have that opportunity.

No, I usually don't vote. I only vote when it's the presidential election.

4.) Do you know why we vote on Tuesday?
No, but that's a good question. I guess that we will never know.

No. It's Tuesday? I thought it was Wednesday.

5.) What was the most memorable campaign that you have encountered?
The campaign of Barack Obama was very powerful to me. I have never felt so connected to one man that I had never met. I just knew that he would be the perfect president.

The election of Barack Obama in 2008. I just have never seen so many people determined to vote. I was standing in line for like ten minutes.

6.) What changes do you hope to see in Philadelphia as a result of this election?
I hope that Philadelphia will become easier to live in. Hopefully the democrats will win, because this will help to do that. After all, the mayor is a democrat. That means there will be less opposing forces battling to get their way.

I hope that the flash mobs will stop in Philadelphia. I'm tired of feeling afraid to leave my house.

7.) What impact do you feel that your vote will have on the election? Did you learn about voting in school? If yes, did that impact your willingness to vote today?
I hope that my vote will help to choose the right person, but its only one vote. Yes, I did somewhat learn about voting in school, but my parents taught me the most about it. In fact, they are the main reason that I come out to vote, because since they've passed away, I feel that it is my responsibility to continue that tradition.

Hopefully my vote will be a step in the right direction. No, I didn't learn about voting in school. My parents told me about it. But, I was never really in to voting because people get too carried away with it. I don't feel like stressing myself out, hoping that someone will win or lose.

Why I Write Poem

Why I Write
By: Ronald Jackson

A little boy came over to me
He asked me about slavery
He wanted to know what it was like
This is why a write

I was once a little boy
I went to school one day
My teacher asked me why I looked so sad
This is why I write

Then, time came to apply for high school
I looked through the requirements
I noticed that I had to prove that I was best for the school
This is why I write

The end is now near
I have proven my point
I am different
That is what I wrote

El Mejor de La Zoo: Ronaldo Jackson

Posted by Ronald Jackson in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at 9:17 am
  • The project tells of my love of the Philadelphia Zoo, the place that feels like home to me. It also tells of my "extended family", the inhabitants of the zoo.
  • I learned that writing a song is indeed fun, but also challenging. When it must be writing in a foreign language, the difficulty increases.
  • I am especially proud of the vocabulary that I used in the song. I felt as though it was somewhat creative.
  • If I could redo the project, I would have spent more time at home working on it. This is because I feel that although we had plenty of class time to work on the song, the more time, the better.

Immigration Visualization Project Reflection

To view the photo, please click here.

  • The fact that there were so many non-European immigrants at this time surprised me. This is because I expected the only non-European "immigrants" to be slaves. However, I was not surprised that the number of immigrants decreased when there was a depression. I wouldn't expect people of foreign lands to travel to America during such a sad time.
  • For the next two decades, I expect that the immigration trend will plummet once more. This is because America is currently going through a rough time. This results in the condition of America being less that ideal for an immigrant.
  • I decided that something out of the ordinary would be the best way to present the information. I originally wanted to make a map of a theme park with checkpoints along the way. However, as time progressed and errors occurred, this became more extensive than I had originally envisioned.
  • I had trouble with collaborating with my group simply because my laptop is in the shop getting fixed. So, this made it necessary for me to share a computer with a group member in class, making the amount of individual working time in class to complete the project increase.
  • If I had to do this project over, I would have done more work on the project at home. This would have allowed the amount of time that I needed to use another group member's computer to minimize.

My refrain shows of my love for the Philadelphia Zoo.

I am happiest with the choice of words that I used in my first draft.

I would like to improve the words that I used at the end of each line. My hope is for it to eventually rhyme.

The most difficult part was trying to find words that rhyme.

I Am From...

Posted by Ronald Jackson in English 3 - Rami on Friday, September 9, 2011 at 2:36 pm
From an area of a lot of trees
From the smells of nature undisturbed
From a house with a television, a stove
And a computer
From my mom, my stepfather
And my fish
From dinner that I eat
And movies that I watch
I’m from respect, love
And caring
From learning and success
From happy and sad
At times
From the thought that humans are destroying the world
From the foods pizza, shrimp
And hamburgers
From Sprite, lemonade,
And Mountain Dew, only blue
From the memories of going to the zoo
And the scary first day of school
From a climate of warmth
And cold for a while
From a place where everyone stays in their home
With no interaction
I’m from a place where I sleep and eat
Not Heaven, but
This is where I’m from

Humanities Portfolio 2011

Posted by Ronald Jackson in English 2 - Block on Monday, June 13, 2011 at 6:08 am
To some, English and History are acknowledged as being their "least favorite subjects”. But in my opinion, they are the finest. This is because they both teach you how to become a better person. Personally, I have found every year of English and History to be my favorite as I lived through it, and this year was no exception. I remember walking through the door the first day. My first impression was that the classes were going to be fun and challenging at the same time. As time moved on, this reality continued. I soon found myself looking forward to both of those classes daily.

One memorable experience for me was writing the descriptive essay. To read it, please click here. At first, I thought that it would be quite difficult to do. The reason is because I felt as though the descriptions for my mentioned experiences would not meet expectations. But, as the project rolled along, I learned of my mistakes. I discovered that the key is to simply continue writing everything that you remember about the experience, no matter how big or small. Another thing to remember is to use all five senses in the descriptions, if appropriate. This gives the reader an accurate image of the flashback within their mind.

Another memorable experience for me was doing the Podcast Benchmark. To listen to it, please click here. I remember wondering what was the point of this English project, as it has little to do with reading. I didn’t realize until the end of it’s true meaning. Doing a podcast is just like witnessing the events of a book. As my aunt told me of her experiences, I was able to see the facial expressions as she spoke, and could connect to her in a far more effective way. I had a feeling of understanding that the words on the pages of a book would have never given to me.

One more memorable experience for me was writing the Op Ed. To read it, please click here. At first, I wondered why writing a news article would be required for History class, as it has nothing to do with the world events of the past. However, I eventually learned that although it is about issues of the present, the present is a result of the past. As I was working on it, I found myself writing about the historic events that led to my more modern topic. After finishing it, I learned that the current conditions of the world are effects of the events of the past. I also realized how important our actions of the present must be, as it will affect the future.

My final thoughts about the English and History courses this year are that they were required to help make me a better student and citizen of America. I have learned that the world is far from perfect, and will unfortunately never be. However, compromise will make the conditions of it better for everyone. For example, I remember doing the Language Autobiography. To read it, please click here. Although two populations of humans sound different, a common understanding of English can be had. Anyway, another final thought that I have is that even though an individual’s contribution to the world may seem small, when gathered together, a larger population has the power to change the way we all see the world currently, and beyond.

1.) My project is a short story about my life.

2.) I like the fact that my project is about me. To complement this, I love telling stories about the experiences that I have encountered throughout my lifetime.

3.) If I were to redo the project, I would have spent more time working on it. This would have resulted in me feeling more comfortable about it during the last few days.

The Sales of Life

Posted by Ronald Jackson in World History - Block on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at 12:40 pm
Characters
Sweetna
Chan (Sweetna's brother)
Bintu (Sweetna’s mother)
Jon (rapist)
Earl (Jon’s friend)
Lucy (Bintu’s friend)

  • Act #1- Scene 1:

(In the background, a radio says “Good Morning Afghanistan! It’s going to be a good one today.” Sweetna begins writing in her diary while laying in bed.)

Voice in Sweetna’s head as she writes

Dear Diary,

(The sun shines through the window and onto her face.)

While in bed, he asked me if I had a good sleep last night. I, Sweetna, had to answer his question in a polite manner. I didn’t want to get hurt. I told him that I did have a good sleep. Yet, my crotch burned from the previous hard usage. I knew that he was going to ask me for something to eat. I really didn’t want to feed him.
(She turned over and looked at him lying there for a few seconds. Then, she continues writing.)
After all, I “fed” him a lot of food last night.

Sweetna

“Hello Jon dear, would you like some eggs,” she said.

Jon

“Yes whore, get to it!”

(She got up and walked to the refrigerator. A plane passed by overhead. She cracked the eggs over a pan, turned the stove on, and began to cook them. She finished and handed Jon the eggs on a plate. He immediately left, slamming the door shut behind him. She walked back to her diary and continued writing. The voice inside her can be heard.)

Voice in Sweetna’s head as she writes

I had to relax a bit longer. A ten year old like myself needs plenty of sleep in order to grow. I asked him if I could sleep a bit longer. His response was not pleasant. So, I assured him that a sandwich would be made. The tears wanted to roll down my eyes.

(She gave a little twitch.)

But, I wouldn’t let them. I had to stay strong because he was the best caretaker I’d ever had. I got out of bed and walked over to the kitchen slowly, trying not to flex my genitals. It still really hurt. It felt like a cactus limb was stuck inside of me. Each step felt like an attempt to pull it out to no avail. I found it hard to believe what my mom told me when she gave me to him. She said me that my life would be better than ever. Maybe she meant that I would feel better in the future. Needless to say, I still believed her because she had my best interest at heart as any mother would.

(The scene ends with her closing the diary.)

  • Act #1- Scene 2:

(Jon the rapist is talking to his friend Earl while walking down an old road to work.)

Jon

“This girl is making me sick to my stomach! But, I have to settle for her. She’s the only “belly-warmer” that I’ve got. Not to mention, she was pretty good last night.”

(He gave a little smirk.)

“I still feel warm and happy. I can’t wait until tonight to go even faster. I like to hear her scream. Yes, I “love” my wife. That’s funny. To be honest, this “toy” is doing a fine job of pleasing me.”

Earl

(Earl chuckles.)

“Hey man, that’s a little harsh. I mean, that little girl is still a person.”

Jon

“Not really! If only she would clean up after my great performances. All that she does is sleep. I guess she’s trying to make me think that I take a lot out of her during the night. But, since I pay her with her life, she should at least do the chores for me.”

(He balls his hand in a fist and frowns.)

“Okay, if she wants to be lazy, I will just stop feeding her.”

Earl

“Whoa, you’re going too far man.”

Jon

“Whatever. But, I can’t let her die of hunger. I need the happiness and relaxation. This world is hard on a man. I need something to look forward to when I come in from work. Or maybe I can kill her and find another “toy”.

(He scratches his chin for a few seconds.)

Yeah, an even better toy that will actually take care of the house without me asking. I’m just as tired of punishing this whore for not doing her chores as she is from taking it. A hand itself needs a break from slapping. Oh well, I’ll give her another chance. As long as “it’s” satisfied, I’m satisfied.”

(The scene ends with Earl nodding his head and continuing walking with his friend to work. A look of regret is on his face.)

  • Act #1- Scene 3:

(Sweetna’s mother Bintu tells of her feelings towards her decision to give Sweetna away to her friend Lucy while sitting at home at the dinner table.)

(Sweetna’s half-brother Chan runs by. She watches until he is out of sight but says nothing to him.)

Bintu

“I really do miss little Sweetna,” she said. “Since my husband left us poor,

(She grasps her hand.)
I couldn’t afford to feed both her and her brother anymore.”

Lucy

“I understand.”

Bintu

“Why did he go? Why?”

(She began whimpering.)

Lucy

(Lucy nodded her head.)

“Let it all out dear.”

Bintu

“He took the easy way out and went to give himself a new life after learning that I was pregnant. That was such a rotten thing to do! I can’t believe that I was nice enough to send him pictures of his growing daughter. But, that will stop here!”

(She frowned.)

Lucy

“Yes honey, if that was me, I wouldn’t send him a thing,” said Lucy.

Bintu

“Anyway, I had to do what was best for my Chan.”

(She looked at the picture of her son that she had in front of her and smiled.)

“He is more valuable because he can work in the field and bring in more money. Yet, this could have been avoided had that man not left us. All that Sweetna could do was make more babies that we couldn’t take care of. Not to mention, selling her presented us with even more money. Yet, I still love her.”

(She rubbed her head.)

“She is my daughter. I think about her everyday. I wonder if she is being treated well in her new home. My mind says that this is not possible. It breaks my heart that this possibility could be true, especially after I promised her that her life would improve.”

Lucy

“Yes darling, but it will all get better in time, I know it.”

(She puts her hand on Binut’s are to reassure her.)

Bintu

“But, what could I do now? I don’t know where he has taken her. I can simply pray for the best and continue to raise my son.”

(The scene ends with Bintu putting her head down as Lucy nods.)

  • Act #1- Scene 4:

(Sweetna’s brother Chan writes in his journal while lying in bed.)

Voice in Chan’s head as he writes

Journal #24
I thought about my big sister Sweetna. I really do miss her.
“Why did she have to leave me?”

(He writes this phrase and then repeats it out loud.)

I thought that maybe I was the one with the problem. Was it because she didn’t like me? That hurts because I really did like her. No, I really did love her. I remember that we used to play games together. I used to love when I would win. And, even though she lost, she would always say “good job” to me. I remember her beautiful face.

(He looks up as if he was thinking of her.)

Chan

“I’ve never seen another girl with such a pretty smile,” he says out loud.

Voice in Chan’s head as he writes

I wish that I inherited her smiling muscles. Now for the cons, because she was not perfect. She did get on my nerves at times. Mommy loved her more than me and she knew it. I remember when she gave me and Sweetna the notebooks. Mine was plain and ugly, while my sister’s had many colors. She tried to act dumb, but I knew that her and mommy had a special relationship.

(A tear appeared in his eye.)

Every time that I would do something wrong, I would have to apologize, and she didn’t.

Chan

“Oh well, I don’t want to think about it anymore.”

Voice in Chan’s head as he writes

With all of that said, I still love her, wherever she is.

(The scene ends with Chan closing his journal and running towards the kitchen.)

  • Act #1- Scene 5:

(Sweetna writes in her diary while sitting under a tree at night.)

Voice in Sweena’s Head as she writes

Dear Diary,

I can’t take this lifestyle anymore. This is the second day since I’ve ran away from him. I am still in search of my mother.

(A smile stuck to her face for a few seconds. She continues writing with the voice in her mind being heard.)

Maybe she misses me just as much as I miss her.

(She looks at the moon for a few seconds.)

That thought is what pushes me to continue my journey. I can’t wait to show her how much I appreciate this diary. It was the last thing that she gave me before she took me to him. Anyway, after being with that man for two years, I don’t think that I could stand another.

(The bushes rattled as if an animal was in them.)

I was tired of getting beat up night after night. I am hopeful that my mom will accept me. If she does then I can continue with my life and be reunited with my friends and family. I can’t wait to see my little brother. We have been apart for so long that I finally realized how much I loved him. I would love another day of his seven-year-old habits, like copying off of me.

(She gives a little chuckle and suddenly shows signs of fear. Something sounds like it’s moving through the grass, but she just ignores it.)

Oh, but I hope that he isn’t trying to find me.

Sweetna

“If he hurts me when I don’t do anything wrong, I can only imagine what he will do if he catches me.”

(She slams the book closed and starts to run to the nearest road. Standing in the road is Jon with a riffle. She blinks her eyes twice to check whether or not she is imagining. She is not.)

Jon

“I knew that I’d find you, get over here bitch,” he says.

(Sweetna begins running down the road, towards a human walking in the opposite direction. When closer, she notices that it is Earl. He grabs her.)

Earl

“Are you alright,” he said.

Sweetna

“No, he’s trying to get me! Oh no!”

(Jon caught up and pointed the gun, he shot Sweetna twice in the chest. She gives a spine-tingling scream and fall to the ground. Earl looked at him in amazement. A police vehicle approaches in the background. Instinctively, Jon runs in the opposite direction.)

(Earl screams to him as he runs away.)

Earl

“Why did you do this man!”

(He goes down and hugs the body Sweetna. He stares at her.)

“He killed my daughter,” he said. “Why did I let her go, why?”

(The scene ends with Earl crying over her.)

The Truth About Bambi

Posted by Ronald Jackson in World History - Block on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at 11:36 pm

A vulnerable species is an organism that is on the brink of being extinct. When they go extinct, they stay that way. However, we humans ignore this fact. We focus on the temporary positive effects of killing animals for their desirables. Yet, we are blind to the long-term consequences of this practice. The time has come to dig deeper into this major issue.

This tradition began in the early days of human occupancy on Earth. Animals were required for food and clothing. Yet, the difference is that at that time we only took what we needed. We killed living creatures only when it was required. This was because we lacked the technology to simply pull a trigger to kill a specimen. Each slaughter at that time meant sharpening spears, gaining momentum, grouping together, and a higher risk of failing. This very fail could in fact be fatal. Thus, we avoided these risks as often as possible.

Today, humans take the necessary amount and more. Many would think that there isn’t really a problem because the main source is from an abundant species. One of the most widely used animal products is leather. It is believed by some that leather comes exclusively from cows: an animal that is thought of as being less by a large population. But, this is misleading. Some leather is also made from the threatened zebra, among others. It is clear that the zebra is what one would call a “favorite animal”. Yet, the companies that produce them don’t express this. Their one priority is to make more money.

As horrid as that may seem to the already threatened animal species, it get’s much worse. There are consequences to those that manufacture the goods. Although leather makers often claim that their products are “eco-friendly”, the process of tanning it stabilizes the protein fibers. This results in the biodegrading process actually stopping. Along with this, today animal skin is turned into leather with a combination of dangerous substances. This included formaldehyde, coal-tar derivatives, and different types of oils. To make the bad even worse, the resulting waste usually contains chromium. The Environmental Protection Agency claims that all wastes containing this substance are hazardous.

But, it doesn’t end here. There is more harm done to the environment. In order to make the pastures that contain the animals being bred for their skins, trees must be cut down. That means less oxygen for we humans. In fact, the dairy itself is harmful to the environment. A recent study found that a single cow released nineteen pounds of volatile organic compounds a year, surpassing the amount of smog made by cars and trucks.

At this point, one must realize that a change is required. We humans must sacrifice a temporary pleasure for a lasting one. One possible solution to this conflict is using an alternative. Instead of leather, one can use cotton, linen, or rubber. Although these efforts do indeed increase the chance of a species survival, only time will tell if even this option is too little, too late.

  • I learned that my daily routine consists of more steps than I originally thought.
  • I feel that I did well on my final project. I believe that my audience will easily understand my product.
  • If I were to re-do my project, I would have went to the teacher more often for help. This would have resulted in me having less unanswered questions. However, I would have left everything else the same.
  • Yes, I enjoyed the project. It helped me to realize that there are several steps to my day; some of them go unnoticed.

The purpose of this video is to teach Noah and other how to congregate verbs into the past tense. After watching this video you should be able to have the knowledge of how to congregate verbs into past tense and use it as a helpful guide. The video shows an example of a real life situation where congregation happens and then gives a more detailed explanation in English so that the viewer (Noah) is able to understand. We are really proud of the Keynote because it is clear and easy to understand. If we had more time we would of recorded more.
Does this video help you any in understanding how to congregate?
