My tutoring experience
Blog post #1 describes about how in general kids are struggling with English as a second language. Many kids struggle with learning English in school. They may get shy, lose confidence, and not participate within the classroom. Blog post #2 explains more about my first time experience with tutoring children. It includes a personal perspective interview with one of the kids I tutored.
Some of the things that I've done to raise awareness of that issue are, going up to schools or people houses and tutor their kids with homework or help them study. I try my best to help them so that they can see the work easily in and out of school.
My opinion is that, some teachers in schools need to find a better way to elaborate the lessons more with the kids. So that the children in school will get a better understanding of whatever information they need to obtain. This will help resolve any miscommunication that would prevent the student from gaining school work understanding.
After the tutor session, I've been communicating with the students teachers about their progress and giving the teachers my opinion in the form of suggestions to give a better result of the child's learning.
The changes I've made during this process are; elaborating the work for the children to get a better understanding of the work, motivating them to have the courage to do their work in and out of school, allowing them to try things on their own, and helping them to succeed in all of the work they would turn in.
I felt great helping and getting to know the struggles that these kids face. It gives pleasure in knowing that I am here to help resolve their learning issue. What I'd learned about from this project is, having patience, explaining things to a kid, and allowing the student to work the problem out on their own then assisting them if needed.
If I had more time to spend one on one with each student ,I would feel that they are completely confident in school. What is left for me is to, make sure that they try things on their own and when they are lacking assistance is provided for them.
These images above are pictures that were taken as I was tutoring students in and out of school.
How To Lie With Statistics Pt. 2
Choose one of the quotations inside the front cover and discuss how it relates to the Introduction. - Klarissa
“Round numbers are always false.” - Samuel Johnson
List as many sources of sample bias as you can that are mentioned in Chapter 1 and provide an example of each.
Average Yaleman, Class of ‘24 makes $25,111 a year.
Put the second paragraph on Page 18 (“A river cannot….”) into your own words.
“A river cannot rise above its source.” To me means that you can’t get something more out of what you already have, which is not true. This paragraph elaborates on this by concluding that in different data sets, we’re able to get way more information than we’ve been told. Thus, the saying a river cannot rise above its source can not be true all of the time.
What is the advantage of a stratified random sample and what difficulties does it pose, according to this chapter?
Advantages:
You can be sure that your samples are appropriately proportioned
Difficulties:
Each unit must only fit in one stratum
Explain why advertisers often rely on a very small sample to substantiate their claims.
If advertisers were to use large sample sizes then it would be harder to substantiate their claims and ideas.
What does the author mean on Page 45 when he says, “Hardly anybody is exactly normal in any way…?”
- What I took from the quote “hardly anybody is exactly normal in anyway” is that there are plenty of outside factors that can screw up data and paint a different picture. So nothing or no person is always normal all of the time, just like data. A clear example of this can be looking at data that suggests people who go to sleep before 10 pm receive higher tests scores. Sure, sleep is important but other factors could influence this conclusion. Things like what they ate the night before the test, what they had for breakfast, what they did in the morning, etc.

"CASE - Fundraising Fundamentals, Section 6.4." CASE - Fundraising Fundamentals, Section 6.4. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.
This site gives really good strategies on fundraising. It talks about how to develop a fundraising strategy, pointing out that a fundraising strategy identifies financial as well as other expectations of what I’m doing. I need a fundraising strategy to effectively prioritize my project, and target the resources I need to do that. It points out that one way to target your resources effectively is to know who your prospects are. Know who my prospects are will enable to me to target my efforts effectively. It also includes what a fundraiser should look like, what I want to achieve, and the resources I can use to have a successful fundraiser.
2) Anatomy of a Successful Event. Digital image. Event Marketing. N.p., n.d. Web.
http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/c1/e0/8b/c1e08ba1508c359e44dd7cb8bab248a1.jpg
This is a photo of an anatomy to a successful event. It points out that an event is a system of elements working together to create a successful event to grow your organization. I can definitely use this photo to organize any events that I will have to fundraise. In the center of the photo is features, your event, and stemming from it are 4 categories: strategy, details, results, and promotions being the biggest one. Then, from those 4 categories stems other tiny little categories that need to be considered when figuring out an event. This photo points out important aspects to look at in order to have a successful event, and it will come in handy when I start planning mine.
3) Kluth, Brian. "Fundraising Methods for Christian Organizations/Ministries/Missions." (n.d.): n. pag. Kluth.org. Web
http://www.kluth.org/fundraising/12Month-Methods.pdf
This source focuses on fundraising methods for Christian Organizations specifically, and it also includes the typical results. I thought this would be pretty helpful considering that I’m fundraising for a Christian ministry, and since I plan for it take place in the church. It has all sorts of fundraising methods, and ideas. I like that the source gives you typical results for each method, that way I can know what will be a bigger turnout. So, I will definitely be using some of these ideas. While there are some ideas I will not be able to do, there are others that I can switch around and make it into my own.
4)"Fundraising For Women's Ministry." Fundraising For Women's Ministry. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.
http://www.juliabettencourt.com/articles/fundraising.html
This is yet another source on fundraising, but it focuses on fundraising for a women’s ministry. I figured that I could use this considering that the ministry I’m in is only women. Not that praise dancing can’t include men, but mainly females do it. It talks about how churches give very little budget or none even to their women’s ministries. In our case, it’s not that our church purposely gives little budget to us, it’s just that the church budget itself isn’t that big, especially when they have bills to pay to keep the church running. A definite idea that I’m going to be using from this source is having bake sales because bake sales always have huge turnouts, or at least some type of decent turnout.
5) "Dancing in the Spirit, Foundation of Liturgical Dance." : Praise Dance Moves. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.
http://www.liturgical-praiseworshipdance.com/p/praise-dance-moves.html
This source gives an overview of what praise dance is, how it is a form of liturgical dance. It talks about how different cultures and ethnic backgrounds around the globe do it, and how it starts revivals in churches. Although I already have a background of what liturgical dance is, I used this to refresh my memory because I got taught on it a long time ago. Before I went into what I was doing for my capstone, I wanted to give a background on what praise dancing is because not everyone know what it is. This source was very good at covering everything about praise dancing in a brief introduction.
6) "A-Z of Fundraising Ideas." A-Z of Fundraising Ideas. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.
http://www.cafod.org.uk/Fundraise/Fundraising-ideas/A-Z-of-fundraising-ideas
This is another source on fundraising ideas. I figured you can never have too many ideas. I’m not going to use them all but it’s just good to have a variety of ideas that I can choose from. I don’t want to stick to the same fundraising event. I do want to have different types of fundraising events because having the same one over and over can be a bore. I want to keep people interested, and in order to draw attention, and to keep them coming, I have to be creative. I also like this source because it’s alphabetized.
7) "Successful Church Fundraising." Better Fundraising Ideas. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.
http://www.better-fundraising-ideas.com/church-fundraising.html
This is another source on having a successful fundraising in a church. As mentioned earlier, sources like these are really helpful because that’s where I plan to have all my fundraising events. Like the other source, they have an alphabetized list of fundraising ideas for a church. Also mentioned earlier, it doesn’t hurt to have too many ideas because the more ideas I’ll have the more creative I can be with fundraising in the church. Not only does this website have fundraising event ideas for churches, but it also has it for sports, school, cheerleading. So, it’s a pretty well-rounded website.
8) "Start Your Free Online Fundraiser." Free Online Fundraising & Crowdfunding Website. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015.
I mentioned in my proposal that I was planning to also start up a website for people to donate, as well as having fundraising events. This website is a place that I can do it on. I figured that if people wanted to donate, but couldn’t because either they couldn’t make it or were away, they could donate online. This doesn’t only have to be for people who know, but for also people who don’t know us. We don’t want our ministry to just happen in the church, we want to be able to present in different places. I think that making a fundraising website would help to get us out there, make us known to people who maybe desire to have praise dancers to present at their church.
9) Interviews
Interviewing the women apart of our ministry could also help with people donating. I was thinking that I could set up videos of interviews to get their perspective on what they desire to have in our dance ministry. I could use those videos, and request to have them played one day on Sunday, so that people can see our perspective, and can understand why it’s important to have equipment to practice with. I could use this as a way to draw people to donate to whatever fundraising event I plan to have, as well as the fundraising website I plan to build.
10) Ministry Leader
Throughout this whole thing, my ministry leader can be a huge help and source because she’s a lot more experienced in the leadership area. This capstone is going to require a lot of leading because I’ll be organizing fundraising events, and I’ll basically just have to be stepping up a lot more than usual. My ministry leader can be big help in teaching this. That is also why she is going to be my mentor for this capstone as well. I know that by doing this, I will be learning leadership skills as well, and that is why she is considered a source as well.
How to Lie with Statistics Podcast #2, Spells, Britton, Ingram, Simmons
screens vs teens the finale
In blog post one and two I talk about how tv makes teens depressed and violent video video games make us more For my agent of change I made a video that basically summarized my annotated bibliography and included all of the important facts. I also talk about how if you use your screen for an hour before you go to sleep it will typically take you an hour to fall asleep if you are normal. My brother helped me to film the first scene which I appreciate. I think the video is very good and clever and will hopefully raise awareness I will post it to Facebook and other public
media's even though it is already on youtube to try and get the most attention. I feel like as a side thing to this project I have spent less time on screens even though the project kinda required a lot of screen time. If I were to do this again I would film the agent of change sooner. Filming my agent of change was very tricky because I am no professional and I don't have fancy equipment so I have to find ways around problems; like when I needed to read off my script but didn't have a teleprompter or anything so I just taped it to the wall. Also I originally wanted to film myself doing fun stuff like swinging from the monkey bars or doing a handstand but their were a bunch of flaws with those desires such as I couldn't hang from my feet on the monkey bars because I had never done it before and I coudn't read my script when I tried to hang upside down, and when I tried to do a handstand I couldn't hold it for all of my lines and it was also hard to read my script because all of the words were upside down. Nature was also a hastle because I would have like to have filmed more things outside but it took forever to film the first few and by then it started to get dark and I didn't want to film in the dark because I don't have any fancy lights and stuff like that. My parents also played a part in where I filmed because my mom was on the phone for a while and I didn't want to bother her so I didn't film near her and my dad was working in his study at home so I didn't want to film near him also I felt self conscious when they could hear me recording, so I mainly filmed in the basement where it was quite. However I do not like to film in my basement for a couple of reasons
1 because the lighting is pretty bad
2. because it's really quite like creepy quite
3. and lastly it's really creepy mainly because of the lack of light and lack of sound but that just makes it all the more creepy and makes me paranoid, so that's why I don't like filming in the basement.
here is my annotated bibliography
Enthony Chhin's Capstone
And for the other part of my capstone, I wrote a paper that was informative but also interesting. It took me a few hours to think of this topic because I really just wanted to get this essay out of the way because I knew it was gonna take time. At first I wanted to write about Lady Gaga but I felt like that would’ve been shooting myself in the foot because It didn’t connect to what was going on in the world. It wasn’t a interesting enough topic because no one is into Gaga as much as me. Anyways, I decided to write about teen culture because teens basically shape the world and the essay just talks about the different stages of teen culture throughout World War II.
Overall, My capstone is a reflection of me and I am proud of what I did & I hope SLA loves it as much as I do.

Mentor (Derrick Pitts)
I chose Derrick Pitts to assist me for my capstone because he already knows a great deal of the topics that I will be teaching. I found him to be very helpful as he went over many things that helped me to improve my teaching. He told me about how to get the students to engage more with my topic, which is extremely important for teachers. He also explained why he was interested in my topics, which provided me an idea of how to keep my students interested while I teach. Overall, he provided me with fantastic ideas for me to improve on.How To Lie With Statistics: Recording #2

Bibliography
**This bibliography was created in the beginning of the year when I was planning on doing a different idea, but the photographer's inspiration still applies**
1.)
Vilder, Muir. "Folio | Muir Vidler." Muir Vidler. Web. 28 Jan. 2015. <http://muirvidler.com/folio-personal/>.
Muir Vildler is a photographer from California that has shot for publications such as i.D magazine and New York Times magazine. The specific link I chose for this source is a collection of his portfolio shots. The majority of his photography is alternative and shows a different perspective of people that others wouldn’t normally pay attention to. This is a beneficial source for me to use because it inspires me to take photos of everything all the time, even if I’m scared. He does little editing to his photos, which makes me consider doing the same to my photos.
2.)
Hamada, Hideaki. "Hideaki Hamada Photography - People." Hideaki Hamada Photography. Web. 28 Jan. 2015. <http://hideakihamada.com/people>.
This source is a link to all of Hideaki Hamada’s work. Hideaki is a Japan based photographer who has a light, airy feel to her photos. She shoots all different types of photographs, such as portraits, travel, and editorials. Her travel photos make me think of how powerful and important location is for photos. Her most recent portrait photos feature a young woman whose face is almost hidden in each photo. This gives me an idea to hide the identity of students who wish to remain anonymous by photographing a specific part of them, such as their hands or an article of clothing that’s important to them.
3.)
Reid, Ian. "Ian Reid's Photos Are Just as Crazy as His Skateboarding Videos | VICE | United States." VICE. Web. 28 Jan. 2015. <http://www.vice.com/read/ian-reids-photos-are-just-as-crazy-as-his-skateboarding-antics-323>.
This is an interview with Ian Reed for Vice magazine. Ian Reed started off as a skateboarder and skate filmer, which inspired him to become a photographer. He shoots risque photos and videos, such as a naked man being barbequed alive. This interview is beneficial to me because it helps me gain motivation to stretch the limits of photography and shoot things that I believe will make a good photo, even if people feel uncomfortable. He established his career by doing what he loves everyday, which is my goal for the future. He taught me that if I work hard everyday, then it’s possible for me to do the same.
4.)
Collins, Petra. "Petra Collins." Petra Collins. Web. 28 Jan. 2015. <http://www.petracollins.com/>.
Petra Collins is a New York based photographer who has worked with publications such as Vogue and Paper Mag. I chose to use her as a resource because not many female photographers get the credit they deserve, and I feel like Petra’s work in underrated. It’s not the traditional theme of photography that most people expect, and that’s why I like it. She plays with lighting and locations, and lighting is something that I’m interested in. Most of her work is published in magazines, which is something that I aspire to do. It would be amazing if this project could be compiled into a zine, but that would have to be something to work on in the future.
5.)
Elterman, Brad. "Brad Elterman." Brad Elterman. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://www.bradelterman.com/>.
Brad Elterman is known for his photographs of celebrities, particularly in the 80s. Brad made his career successful by being outgoing and bold, especially when he was a teenager. This link is directed to his photography portfolio. This source is useful to me because Brad motivates me to not be afraid of taking photos of people all the time. He captures people in their natural habitat, and makes every shoot look impromtu.
6.)
Ang, Ying. "Ying Ang - Photography." Ying Ang. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://www.yingangphoto.com/page.cfm?id=36&subid=109>.
This source is Ying Ang’s portfolio. Ying lives in Australia and edits her photos to appear soft and nostalgic. Part of me wants to edit my photos to look like they were shot with film, and the other part of me wants to make it look as digital as possible. This is a great source for me because Ying incorporates both into her photos, which I hope to do in order to create a happy medium in my photos. Her work motivated me to choose to edit my photos to appear crisp and digital while still being soft to make them more emotional.
7.)
Fu, Vivian. "Me and Tim." Vivian Fu. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://vivianfu.com/>.
Vivian Fu is a San Francisco based photographer with a BA in fine arts, specifically photography. This source is a link to her online portfolio where all of her work is organized and displayed. Her photos are very intimate and are often of herself using self timer. She inspires me as a female photographer to be more creative and to take more pictures of myself that are honest and open. I can incorporate this into my capstone by taking pictures of people from different perspectives and choosing which one represents their hidden side the best.
8.)
Sophia, Cheyenne. "CHEYENNE SOPHIA." CHEYENNE SOPHIA. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://cheyennesophia.com/>.
In her photography, Cheyenne Sophia has a similar style to Petra Collins. She also focuses on colorful lights and female models, but Cheyenne’s work has more shadows and darkness to it. I resonate with Cheyenne more because the low lighting and bright colors is what attracts me the most. Although I probably won’t be taking my photos like this for my project, I was able to use this source to make this decision.
9.)
Nieratko, Chris. "Ed Templeton On His New Book and Life After Skateboarding | VICE | United States." VICE. Web. 30 Jan. 2015. <http://www.vice.com/read/ed-templeton-on-his-new-book-and-life-after-skateboarding-333>.
This source is an interview with Ed Templton for Vice magazine. Ed Templeton is known for being a pro skater, but also for his amazing photography. He often takes street portraits, but still has planned photoshoots also. This interview discusses his new photography book that’s being released. After viewing this interview, I started to explore more of Ed’s work and thinking about how my photos are similar yet different to his. My capstone is going to be a planned photoshoot, but I can incorporate Ed’s style into it by making the photos seem as though they were taken candidly.
10.)
Marks, Matthew. "Nan Goldin - Selected Works - Matthew Marks Gallery." Nan Goldin - Selected Works - Matthew Marks Gallery. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://www.matthewmarks.com/new-york/artists/nan-goldin/selected-works/>.
This source is a link to a bio about Nan Goldin featuring some of her photos written by Matthew Marks. Nan Goldin is a New York & Paris based photographer. She’s known for changing the underground scene of photography in the 80s due to her presentation of her overly-saturated, risque photos. Her photos are typically unglamorous shots of beautiful people that show how real they still are. This made me think of an idea for my capstone - I could tell all the girls that I will be photographing to appear as natural as possible for their photo by not doing their hair or makeup.

Almost always first on the three different types learners list, and who this research paper is going to be most effective for, visual learners are first on deck to talk about. Before we delve into the deep dark secrets of how a visual learner retains information best, we must know what exactly a visual learner is. A visual learner is someone who learns best by using visual stimuli, ence the name visual learner. Visual stimuli consist of books, pictures, flashcards, colors, etc. Any type of information that can be given solely through vision would considered visual stimuli. The thing that makes these learners special is, they can visualize anything and they’re pretty good at it. Visual learners learn effectively when they draw what they hear, go over flashcards, color code information, and write down and read over information and keywords over and over again. These are the type of people who you’ll usually find doodles invading the sides of their notebook. Surprisingly, according to the Social Science Research Network about 65% of the general population are considered visual learners. Which explains why over the course of our existence we’ve used pictures, drawings, symbols and any form of written literature to give information to one another. This is also something to be expected of today due to our technological advancements. Since we live in fast paced screen filled world where we are fed our favorite shows, news and advertisements through our phones, televisions and computers, there will be more visual learners in the upcoming younger generation. Thanks to this overload of information at the tips of our fingers attention spans of children have gotten shorter by at least. At a glance this might seem like a bad thing, but this tweaks the wiring in their brain so that the younger generation can pick up information faster through visual stimuli. With more and more children becoming fast paced visual learners eventually we will move away from reading long texts to a much more quicker, efficient way to teach.
