Great Depression Vs. Great Recession

Lexus forman and I tackled this project a little different. We did a debate between the Great recession and Great depression. We both represented one of the two. We created a set of questions, based on the criteria of the project. We knew we needed certain information and facts to make sure this project was the way we needed it. We added fun and creative, way to represent the data. So hopefully you enjoy!

For our project we chose to do visuals on easel.ly.com. We chose this because the themes and layouts for this website are really creative and fun so they would make the project enjoyable to look at. Each link will take you to a different visual, each describing wither the Great Depression, the Great Recession, or comparing both. Our project covers all aspects of both events and breaks the causes and effects down in a way that is both simple but informative. We worked very hard on this, so we hope you enjoy it !

This source is from the second part of a series called War, Depression, and War, 1914-1945. The source begins with an explanation of why the Great Depression began. They focus on the banks and the stock market aspect of the crash. Then the article goes on to talk about how other people view the Great Depression and what caused it. Then the article talks about how the government responded to the crisis. Then the author really dives into the New Deals and what they were and what caused them.


This is a very useful source. I find it useful because of first they way it is set up. The article is broken up with titles over each section describing what is inside of each. The article also provides an analysis of the Great Depression and of how people saw it and their opinions on what happened. There was one problem though, the article does seem a little bias in my opinion he mentions a lot of views but they all seem to be leaning towards the same thing.


This source is very helpful because it helped me get a clear view on what the New Deal and the Great Depression was also it helps me to analyze other people’s thoughts and compare my ideas upon theirs. I like this source also because it dives into theories and reasonings for happenings inside of this time period.

This source is a promotional video for the New Deal. The source talks about all of the problems that the New Deal will solve and how they will go about solving those problems. The purpose of this video was to gain supporters of the New Deal. The director did a great job at making the New Deal seem appealing to all citizens. The video covers a lot of aspects of the plan, they cover the jobs that the New Deal was supposed to provide, how the farms will be turned into roads so that trading is easier, and how different places in the US, that need it, will receive construction on failing roads and buildings.

This source is very useful because it shows you how the government wanted everyone to see the New Deal. The government sugar coated everything and made it seem like with this new and improved plan that everyone’s problems would just go away. You see just how media can easily shape someone’s decisions and beliefs and also how you only see what the government wants you to see.

This source was very helpful, I got a totally different perspective on the New Deal. This video showed you what the purpose of the New Deal was and the effect that they wanted the New Deal to have on citizens. The way it was delivered was very clear because it was made for the average citizen not a politician. I also learned a lot from the visuals throughout the video, they showed what the “average” american citizen looked like during that time period. I found this video very interesting and very informative.

This source talks about Herbert Hoover and how he was elected mainly because of people believing him for promising the new deal and it made them excited and seem to have something to look forward to for the near future. This also talks about the things that he started to do during his presidency and things that he was changing hoping to please people and make the new deal work for the better and help get the country back on track. This also talks about the various things that the new deal made like 3 million men were able to work because of an program that was very successful within the new deal.  

This is a useful source because it lets you know reasons as to why people chose Hoover and why they believed in the new deal. This also tells what the new deal was able to do and how it was able to create jobs to help people and get people to be able to have jobs again.

This source is helpful because it give me in depth details about the new deal and some of the things that it was able to change and how it helped people and also led to the choice of who won the election.

This source talks about when the great depression started and how long it lasted and also talks about the things that happen during the great depression. This source gives a basic general summary about the great depression and the big things that factored into it. This also talks about how president Hoover didn’t think that this was going to be as serious as it was and thought that this was just going to be something that would fly past really fast and then the economy would be back on track and back to normal. This source also states that the worse part of the great depression happen while Franklin Roosevelt was in office in 1933 and how within his 8 years in office he was able to help get the economy back on track and how his new deal permanently change the federal government's relationship with the US.

This source is useful because it talks about how Roosevelt’s new deal had an effect on the great depression and also how things were during this time while giving people a basic background on this historic event. This source also helps people see how these two presidents helped change the bad and help the economy become stable once again after a period of time and plenty of hard work.

This source is helpful because it summarizes the great depression and the main causes and reason for it also the main things and people that helped change the country to help us get out of this depression. Also this source can give information that you may not have known such as when the worse part of the depression and what things changed and impacted the US longer than just this depression.

This source talks about the policy during the great recession and that one of the reasons for the great recession was having a poor policy and poor choices on the policy by the federal government. This source also talks about how the federal government made different and better choices from this recession to the one in 2008 and 2009 and how things became better during those two.  

This source is useful because it explains a reason for the cause of the great recession and also lets you know about some of the choices that the federal government made that had an effect on the recession overall and how the changed choices they had in another recession were good.

This source talks about how the great recession affected people in europe and central asia and how it affected their countries. It splits up different causes for the great recession in chapters and labels them them by what big thing happened to contribute to the great recession then goes into detail about each one of the different causes throughout the whole chapter.

This source was useful because it gave me a better understanding about how the great recession affect other countries as well as america and also I learned about many different causes the contributed to the great recession and an in depth analysis about them.

This source is very helpful and was a huge contributor to my knowledge of the great recession. The source is an interview given by a host on NPR and the interviewee was a specialist on America’s economy he also studies other country’s economies and compares them. I found the interviewee to be a wonderful source because he studies economies for a living and can give major insight on how we were affected with international economic knowledge.

The article speaks about why the Great Recession is still affecting America today and exactly how the Great Recession still affects us today. The interview gave the most insight into unemployment and how a lot of Americans are still unemployed even four years later. This was possibly the most devastating aspect of the Great Recession. We not only still have a suffering unemployment rate but it’s getting worse. Another aspect that I enjoyed and that was very helpful about the interview was that he also made predictions of what would happen in the future. Based on his knowledge of the European economy and our current economy he made predictions of what our economy will look like in the years going forward.

Happy 5th birthday, Great Recession! I hope you get hit by a truck. The title of this article says it all, while being incredibly witty and extremely sarcastic this source is very informative. This article begin with explaining exactly what the Great Recession was which I found very helpful. He did not go into extreme detail but covered the major points of this event and it was a wonderful refresher to remind us of what happened.

After reminding us of our economic crash the author goes on to dive into the effects of the Great Recession on our economy today. I think the most helpful aspect of the article was when he mentioned when the economy actually was revived. For a short time period our economy had hope, and this was the only source that actually acknowledges this. I found this to be very interesting and unique to this source. I also found that this article also mentions the European economy just like the source analyzed above. I saw that this was a  recurring pattern of mentioning European economies.

This was an amazing source, it covered just about every area of the Great Depression. The author didn't drone on about small details that wouldn't make much of a difference but they covered the main points of the Great Depression. I also liked this source because of the way it was organized, each page has what it is about at the title so if you're looking for a specific aspect of this event you can easily find it. 

This source was used for all of our posts about the Great Depression because the information in this article was so helpful. The author spoke about the time leading up to the event and the time following the event. The author also covers how the event affected not just the people of the United States but countries all around the world. It was interesting to hear how this national epidemic went global. This article was organized very nicely and was well thought out.

This was another great source. It is from the same website as the source about Great Depression which I liked because then everything is kind of relative. If they are from the same website you can trust the information equally and articles have the same flow. This article flows smoothly and is concise and to the point. I enjoyed that the author did not make the articles very long and just went to main details because it makes it easier to read and comprehend. 

The best part about this article was when she compared what Obama left out of his plan for the Great Recession that they used in the plan for the Great Depression. The author made that comparison of how America sometimes learns from their mistakes and sometimes does not. I found that very interesting. The other topics that were covered were kept short but the author went over the material very well and it seems as though a lot of work was put into the article to make sure that it was not only historically sound but also just quality writing.

Crossing Boundaries by Dylan Long

Ever been judged for doing something you like to do? So has my mom. She used to go see certain types of music that her friends thought was terrible, and they judged her for it. However, not even that was getting in the way of my mom and her love for doing what she loved. 


For me, crossing boundaries is one of the major keys to succeeding in life. Whether it be a boundary that is holding you back, a chance you are going to take, or a social norm you are going to defy, good will come from crossing this boundary. However, if it is a boundary that if crossed, directly offends or hurts someone, that is not ok. Boundaries of respect, personal space, identity, are boundaries that are meant to be respected and protected. Crossing a boundary in this way should be in no way tolerable. Overall, crossing boundaries depends on what boundary you are crossing. 

I loved doing this interview; I found out a ton of cool stuff about my mom that I never knew before. It was very interesting for me and I really connected with the content; I related to it. It was great to hear my mom's story of overcoming the opinions of others and being a motivator for others to do the same.

For our project, we decided to do a video presentation using the Educreations website. In our video, we talk about the differences between the great depression and the great recession. We contrast the causes of each one. We also talk about the different ways out government tried to solve them. We compare the New Deal to the Obama administration's plan to fix the economy. This photograph was taken in 1933. It shows a man named harold sims who was a corporal of the Civilian Conservation Corps. He is holding a portrait he painted of Franklin Delano Roosevelt.  He is standing in front of some sort of fence.

This source supports my argument that the public were in favor of roosevelt’s new deal. The man is holding a picture of roosevelt he painted. The picture does not cast any sort of negative light on the president. It shows his face looking at the viewer in a friendly determined manner. His eyes are facing forward, indicating honesty. And he has the words “A NEW DEAL” across the bottom on a clean looking banner. The fact that he took the time to paint this shows that he was very appreciative of the Presidents plan to save the economy.

This source is helpful because it shows someone involved in one of the New Deal programs showing support for it. It helps prove that that this was not a begrudging task set upon the people. It was a collaboration between the government and the people.

This is the transcript of a speech given by Franklin Roosevelt (FDR). It describes his plan to help save the American economy. In the speech: he talks about his faith in our people, what we need to do as a country to turn the economy around and how he would implement this plan.

This speech helps to show what he intended to do as president and what his attitude toward the roll was. He talks about watching out for the needs of the whole country as opposed to a chosen few. Which is the belief held by our current president. In the speech he also talks about what still needs to be done instead of dwelling on the past.

I plan to contrast FDR’s speech to one made by obama, and contrast their similarities and differences. I think I will do this by chopping up audio from each of their speeches and making a new one.

This is the transcript of a speech given by Obama in 2008, shortly after his election. In the speech he describes what he thinks should be done for the economy and what he wants from united states citizens.
This source is good for me to use because it is similar to a speech made by FDR regarding the economy. I know it is reliable since it is a direct transcript Obama’s speech. This is one of the better sources that will be in my bibliography since it comes directly from the President. It is unbiased since it is just a transcript.
I will be contrasting this to the speech made by FDR shortly after his election. So I will be comparing those two.

This is a piece of graphic art posted by the Occupy movement’s site staff. It depicts an American Flag with different corporate logos as the stars.
This source is reliable because it is a political cartoon someone made. There is no analysis of the cartoon attached. These two things make it a primary source. This is different from some of the other sources used because it is a political cartoon. Unlike some of the more formal sources in the bibliography.
We will be using this source to help describe the opinions of some of the American population. This will be accomplished by analysing what the art communicates to the uninformed observer.

The group chose to present our work and findings through a website because a website would allow the viewer to see both the Great Depression and the Great Recession in an interactive way. We talked about both the Great Depression and the Great Recession, the different programs that were made to help the economy, the views of different political cartoons, and FAQs. This was an informative project and we believe that we produced very informative work. 

The Great Depression and The Great Recession were both times when economic conditions were not the way it was supposed to be. Banks Crashed and Investments were made but that was just the beginning. Many plans were considered to help the economy and solve the problems that were occurring. This website will explain and go deeply into all of the successes and failures of the economy during the Great Depression and The Great Recession. The following questions will be answered: Does american learn from past lessons?, What national conditions bring about similar historical events? and How does the economic success or failure of America change the lives of American systems and individuals?

The Great Depression caused FDR’s New Deal to be implemented in America’s history, but today the Great Recession is Obama’s Administrations problem. For our history benchmark, we had to summarize the main ideas of the New Deal and the Obama Administration, while finding similarities and differences. We also had to find out the possible successes and failures of Obama’s administration programs based on the success and failure of the New Deal, while keeping mind of the essential questions.

We've all had those friendships that kind of went downhill. People drift away from each other for many different reasons, for better or for worse. Maggie Hohenstein realized that the relationships she had with her friends was becoming emotionally unhealthy for her. The conversation I had with her goes over the details of her middle school social life and her final decision on how she would deal with her friends.

Audacity was a new program that I had never used before and I think I adapted pretty quickly on how it worked. The questions and conversation was kind of natural because Maggie and I are really good friends. We have sort of skimmed the topic once or twice before but I felt like this project would be helpful in understanding a bit more of her past. What I thought was the hardest part was the music choice because music specifically made for conversations is hard to come by. I ended up using the intro of a song and then looping it on audacity and then choosing the end of another song for the end of the conversation.

Living within an economic crisis, leaves people with a lot to endure. The consequences are awful, as both the Great Depression and the Great Recession caused a crash in the stock market. Many Jobs were laid off as a result, particularly the primary and successful companies within the US. The economy was not only affected within the US but also globally. Without economic improvement, the US would simply not have been strong enough in the world. The poverty needed to be reduced, higher education needed to be pursued and health care needed improvement as well. Reflection of the past is greatly vital especially now that the economy is better off than it was when Roosevelt and Hoover were in the picture. President Barack Obama is now in their footsteps and his outlook seems to be quite similar to Roosevelt’s. The Great recession only occurred because attempts of help failed, regarding the Great Depression. This suggests that mistakes are being repeated to cause another economic crisis after the Great Depression; the Great Recession.

The history within the struggle that people lived through, is represented in this comic to enlighten people who may be younger than a teenager. The depths within the history of the United States are shown in this comic. World War I was greatly responsible for all of the occurrences that are displayed figuratively and literally.

In the introduction page, there are two boxes; one representing the Great Depression and another representing the Great Recession. There are also two clouds representing the two presidents. The sole reason why Roosevelt and Hoover are two clouds is because both are from the past, intended to look eerie and cloudy since they are no longer current. The comic is set up so that one can differentiate between each cloud and box because one will always be greater than the other. For instance, The Great Depression was greater than the Great Recession, therefore it is a rectangle withholding greater volume than the Great Recession’s cartoon representative. Furthermore, as Hoover was greater in size than Roosevelt, one can assume that their ghosts would reflect this size difference. That is how the two cloud cartoons are set up to be differentiated. Overall, this cartoon is meant to entertain and inform a young audience about all the factors that play into the Great Depression and the Great recession.

This project was created to compare and contrast the programs that would help America recover after we suffered from economic recessions. The project compares The New Deal (created by Franklin D. Roosevelt and Congress) and Obama's Plan (created by Obama and Congress.) This project will reveal information on both topics and help to come to a better understanding on how our Nation was able to stand tall once more after we have fallen.

Business Project (Great Depression and Great Recession)

We created a website, because we felt that this would be the best way to express everything we wanted to express and really give as much information as possible. We included everything between the start of the New Deal and when President Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected to the stimulus package from President Barrack Obama. We really talk about the new and old stuff and compare and contrast it. Some are very similar, yet very different at the same time. I hope you enjoy our website! Lots of fun went into making it. :)

​For this mini project my partner Franklin and I decided to create a small podcast where we discuss the causes of the great depression and make comparisons with the recent great recession. We tied in the information we've been learning in class during the past few weeks and we created an easy to follow along conversation in the form of a radio talk show podcast. After we compare the two economic downturns we use sources and statistics to predict what we think will be the outcome of the great recession.

"Striving for Education" by Emalyn Bartholomew

​It's easy to get caught up in what people deem as the "social norm", especially when defying it would ostracize you even more. Listen as my mom, Stacy Bartholomew, talks about her experience with overcoming boundaries in education set in both societal ways, and familial ones.

Crossing boundaries set by society come with a completely different set of repercussions than those set by family. When you have to take on both headfirst, it's a daunting task to say the least. Talking to my mom was interesting, especially learning stories and aspects of her life that have never been brought up before. As I look at my own life, especially as it leads closer to college, I see the differences in how she was raised, but also many similarities in our mindsets. 


The hardest part of this project for me was not the actual interview, which came naturally and flowed well as a conversation between my mom and I. It was, however, figuring out which stories and aspects to cut out of the podcast, while choosing the most beneficial ones to stay in. I set out with over 45 minutes of raw material, and sifting my way through that was difficult. However, it made me realize which parts of her story were more focused on the point, and which parts most reflected her story. 

God's great test

​This story is about my mother Dawn Lewandowski getting pregnant at a really young age and how she lived the rest of her life after her situation as a child started with children.

You will need to know that many situations happen with this story and my mother was not apart of the reasons why my sisters had the problems that they did.


You will also see that I set a boundary for myself to cross and you will understand why after listening to the full pod cost.

   Crossing boundaries can be both physical and mental and happens in many cases. When one crosses a boundary they can do it with or without the knowledge of them actually doing it. In this case my mother actually crossed two boundaries as you know. One being the boundary of comfort and the boundary of responsibility. In the case of my mother crossing her boundaries made a plus, even if some negative things happened without the situation. When one crosses a boundary it can set both cost and benefits it just determines on what the boundary is.  While I was doing this project I learned many things I didn't know about my mother and sisters. I honestly would not do nothing different then what I did maybe interview my sister Tiffany. Tiffany is the middle child with her son is the care of someone else. The only reason why I did not interview her is because the whole story is very emotional and with the problems she was diagnosed with she would make the story more sad then it is and its hard for her to talk about that story because it's a huge part of her life. I believe that my peers were right, I took great time and I believe that my overall topic was very interesting and even though teen pregnancy story's are common today the added information with the lies and my sisters conditions make it better.

Returning to your home country can be hard after living your entire life time overseas, especially when you don't think that you belong in either country. Listen to my mom, Shareen Kelly, talk about her life growing up in boarding school and coming to America for college from Africa. Also, listen to her reflection on being what society calls a "third culture kid".

In my mom's case, she has been crossing a boundary her whole life, which leads her to having felt like an outsider. When she was in Africa, she felt left out and misunderstood because she was white and that was not her native country. However, when she came to America for college, she felt like a foreigner as well because she was used to the Nigerian culture that she had grown up around. In her opinion, this was the reason behind some of her really deep friendships with other missionary kids-- they knew what she had experienced and they had experienced the same thing. Also, growing up without her parents made her value the little things that she could spend time doing with me and my brothers as we grew up.

The actual recording of this interview was easy-- my mom is a great conversationalist and gave me thorough answers, lots of backstory, and interesting tidbits that made the story feel more personal for me and I'm sure for the listeners. Also, she was not afraid to talk about how she really felt when she came to America, which is something that is very personal for her and something that I was glad that she was able to share so eloquently.

This was a really fun project to do. Not only did it help me get to know my mom better, but it also strengthened my interviewing and editing skills. Since I had to cut a lot out of the interview, it made me realize the details that are necessary to a story and helped  me figure out with ones could be cut away so that I am left with  just the raw story. Also, thankfully, I did not have many technical errors when using Garage Band, which was great.

Our project is in the form of a comic in which the Obama's "Big Deal" is presented as The New Deal. So the reader can understand how the New Deal is very much like Obama's focus on healthcare, work inequalities, and financial reforms.

The idea behind the comic inspired by an article about how Obama's "Big Deal" and new stimulus package, and attempts to turn around the Great Recession are like the FDR's New Deal. And how these points of great reform and economic depression are similar

International Educator- Julian Makarechi

Julie Castagnet left everything behind just to teach children. She had to deal with not being with her family for her whole career. This young French woman took the chance to move to the US to find a job as an educator, but with doing so she had to separate herself form her home country and family.

Julian Makarechi- Interview- Q3 BM

This is a story of a French teacher that decided to work abroad, in the US. There were some good things and bad things that occurred but she never stopped loving what she did. Not only was she the only person in her family to be come a language teacher but also the first to move to the United Sates.

If one wants cross boundaries they have to be willing to be brave, give it all they have and make sacrifices. It also comes with a lot of self motivation; to make a change one must feel very strong and confident about their goal. Crossing boundaries takes time and usually it is hard to do it on your own; one should accept help from others.

This was my first time using Audacity so I had problems editing things. I would recommend to use Garageband to avoid such confusion. I did not quite understand the way it was set up and wished things were more clear. 

Throughout this project I learned how make a podcast. The examples that were given to us in class were very helpful. Before this was assigned to me, I did now know all they key elements to make a well rounded interview. I used what I learned for my final project;  an intro, deep question, a conclusion and a reflection. The interviews we listened to gave me great ideas for how ask questions that will get the speaker to go into depth about the topic. 

I definitely feel that my strengths of this project was how the story was told and how it effected Julie’s life. I was able to get her to tell me things that I did not even know, and that ended up helping me to get more information on how exactly she crossed boundaries. Almost none of my questions made her have a one or two word answer, which was good. Another thing that made this project good was how we were both able to relate and have a great conversation about the topic. One thing that I do not believe that I did well on was my editing. 


A Blessing Within A Tragedy

A young man (Jospeh Wactor-Brown:My Uncle) in his late teens was diagnosed he has kidney failure. This podccast talks about the struggles he faced with dialysis, work, school, family etc. He talks about his life after and before his kidney transplant. Also my mother (jamila medley) was interviewed about the boundies crossed during this time for her brother. Bounderies such as her thinking about donating her kidney, her first teenage boyfriend dying and becoming the doner. In the end of the pod cast you will discover the Blessing within the tragedy.
