Printmaking Blog

Printmaking is when you are creating multiple images through an original image. You would use ink and apply it on the plate of the image, then you would print on a piece of paper using relief press. Printmaking has different versions, the intaglio, lithography, serigraphy, and mono-printing. Lithography are made through oil and water while relief printing are made through ink. Printmaking is important because it can show history of culture. It also let others to spread their different designs and arts.

The invention of printmaking was revolutionary because it was developed from textile printing, following the introduction of paper from China. The first woodblock prints on textiles were made by the Egyptians. It’s important because Italian prints started to include mythology and pure ornamentation.

I find the print artistically interesting because it seems like it has a strong meaning behind it. In other words, this piece of print gives me a really strong vibe. Also, the print looks really neat and clean to me. There’s a man holding a long stick with a big fist behind him while he looks back at it. There’s also swords sticking out from the right side of the big fist. I notice that the man is dropping some rock pieces and that the contrast of the black and white parts are evenly proportional. I also notice that the clothes that the man is wearing is black while the outside of the fist is white. I wonder what’s the meaning behind this print. What if the fist and the swords switched places? Would there be a different meaning behind it. I notice that the fist is growing out from the ground and getting bigger.

negative space

Negative space is the space around and between an image. The darker shaded areas on my cut out was my negative space, the positive space was the lighter areas. Artists are visual learners, being able to see the negative space in an image helps them define the object and balances the differences. Seeing in negative space enhances the drawings because you realize that the space around the subject is just as important as the subject itself.

Negative Cut-out Reflection

A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

Negative space is pretty much the space around an object. For example, in the photo attached, the blue on the right side is pretty much the negative space. It almost outlines the the tree shape. In other words, negative space is also the space you wouldn’t color if you had to color something for example.

B. Explain how you found negative space in your cut out?

I found negative space by looking out side of the tree and pretty much cut around it as an outline. After that, I went deeper into the negative space that was within the tree. (this would be holes, where you could see through)

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

It helps an artists to see in negative space because the artists can see the outline of what they are trying to draw. In addition, negative space is just as important is positive space and to incorporate both elements in is key because it guides the viewer’s eye in what the focus is.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?

Seeing in negative space does indeed enhance drawings because we can see the difference of what an drawing can be. For example, picture may have a vase as its positive space but for its negative space, it looks like two faces.

b.  I found the negative space in my cut out by cutting out the space between the bird and keeping the parts that I cut.
c. It helps an artist to see in negative space because you can see exactly the shape and curves and spaces of the object being drawn.
d. Seeing in negative space does improve drawings because you're looking in a different perspective that helps you to know the edges and curves and details of the object.

A. Negative space is all of the space in a picture that is around and in between an object in a picture.
B. I found negative space in my picture because the space was different colors.
C. It helps an artist to see in negative space because it makes it easier to draw in a wider range of pictures.
D. Seeing in negative space enhances drawing because it makes you photo look better to the eye.

 A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

Negative space is basically the space around the object.

B. Explain how you found negative space in your cut out?

I saw the cut out pasted it on my construction paper and saw the empty space around it.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

Your able to fill in what was already there.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?

I think so because your able to add things that you may now notice without the space.

A. What is negative space? (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

Negative space is the space around the object in the drawing. An example of this would be when you cut a piece of paper and you put it on a different piece of paper the color that went from the role of the foreground to the background would be negative space.

B. I was able to find negative space because when I was younger I used to do drawings and I learned not to color outside the drawing and this is very similar so it helps me understand how to flip the two colors so it creates negative space and a whole picture while it contradicts itself.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?
It helps an artist to see in negative space because it controls the borders of positive and negative space. It also gives the artist more to work with when it comes to the foreground

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?

Seeing in negative space does enhance drawings because it already introduces the background however it makes you focus on the foreground.

Antonia Solar- Negative/Positive Space Cut Out

What is negative space?
Negative space is the space around and between an object and is used usually to make an object stand out. In negative space, two different colours are used.

Explain how you found negative space in your cut out.
I found negative space in my cut out by imagining the opposite of my image in the colours. This is a sort of reflection of the image but at the same time its opposite. I looked at all the lines in my image and saw which ones combined with each other.

Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?
It helps an artist to see in negative space because then they can understand how the lines and colours work together. This can also help them to enhance an image by making the object in the image the centre of attention.

Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?
Yes, I think it does enhance drawings because of the contrast the two different colours opposing and figures reflecting creates.

A. Negative space is the space around and between the person, place, thing, or idea in the image. It does not include the actual subject of the picture.

B. I found the negative space of the bird by cutting around and between it. I didn't include the eyes or anything. The point was to find the space around and between it.

C. It helps an artist to see in negative space because it defines the boundaries of the subject and makes it easier to draw.

D. Looking in negative space does help because it shows the outline of the subject and makes it easier for the artist to see and draw. once the outline is straight, the artist can then go on to positive space.

Positive/Negative Space Cut Out

 A. Negative space is a vision in art where you use the absense of art to create art. For example, if you have a black background and white text, you are removing the black color to present the letters within.

B. I found the negative space by cutting out the objects on the template with a dull color and placing the cutouts onto a vibrant background.

C. Negative space give the artist and the viewer another lense to see the art in. The positive space is just as important as the negative. They are equal.

D. Negative space enhances art by creating two images in 1. Two perspectives. Components stand out better.

In art we had to do a project based around negative space. Negative space is not what you see that makes things up but the space around it and that is the negative space. For exmaple if you look at the house itself that is the positive space if you look around it that is the negative space.

In my cut out I had an owl that is when I had to look at the in between or not the physical aspect of the cut-out that is where i found the negative space.

I think negative space is important because negative space can make a artist give thier own interpretation or twist on how they want something to look or even just to not always stay simple.

I can see how seeing negative space can be a good thing because there isn't always things that can be seen first sight but it depends on the kind of artist you are

Cut out Image//Gabriella Torres

The way I found negative space in my picture is my using my artist eye. I looked at the image I had to cut out which was a tree. What I saw that the light blue sheet I wanted to make it the negative space. I am putting the dark blue sheet on top of it, which makes the blue negative and helps form a picture with the dark blue sheets.

I believe that it helps an artist to see negative space. Seeing negative space can bring out the image so the viewers can interpret the way of the image they chose to present. Negative space is important as positive space The artist wants to make sure that the background is not too big so the image in focus is not in focus and vise versa because if not followed the image will be deformed and will not be able to see what the actual image would of been.

I believe negative space in an image enhances the image, because you can see more detail in the image from the different contrasts. You can see two different ways with both the negative space and the positive space. The negative space will bring out the image and can help the viewer see the image.

 A. What is negative space?

A negative space is the space around and between the subjects of an image.

B. Explain how you found negative space in your cut out?

In order for me to find the negative space in my cut out, I found the spaces and boundaries, and compared them to the other pieces.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

It helps artist so that it forms a correct space.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?

Yes, negative space creates a successful piece of art.

Negative/Positive Space

1. Negative space is the space around and between objects in a drawing or picture. It is either a white object with a black background or a black object with a white background. There is no shading or seperating lines in negative space

2. I found negative space in my cutout by cutting out the paper given to me and placing half of it on the left side of the piece of paper and the rest on the right side of the paper to give an effect of negative space.

3. It helps an artist to see in negative space because it makes approaching the drawing easier, holds the design together, and can bring focus to a certain part of the drawing.

4. Seeing in negative space helps enhance the picture because the picture appears clearer in only two colors and balances out the elements in the drawing.

Negative/Positive Space Cut Out

A. What is negative space? (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

Negative space is the space around the object in the drawing. For example, in the image above the image shows negative space. On the left side of the image, the color brown represents the negative space around the tree.

B. Explain how you found negative space in your cut out?

I was able to find negative space in my cut out because at my old school, we did a similar activity to this. To be specific, the template given was an image of half of a tree and the object is the tree so which means that the rest of the space are the negative space. Also, on the template there are two different color and one is darker than the other. The one that is darker is positive space while the lighter color is negative space.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?
It help an artist to see in negative space because it balances the boundaries of positive and negative space. It also helps the artist have a better understanding of the drawing.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?

Seeing in negative space does enhance drawings because it brings out the object of the drawing or the focus of the drawing. It also balances out the elements in the drawing.

WHAT IS NEGATIVE SPACE?

Negative space is the space taken up by an object in an overall area. In art, you use negative space by looking at the outline of an object and shading in either the space around the outline of the object or the space within.

EXPLAIN HOW YOU FOUND NEGATIVE SPACE IN YOUR CUTOUT.

In my cutout, there was negative space wherever it was shaded in and positive space where it was not.

WHY DOES IT HELP AN ARTIST TO SEE IN NEGATIVE SPACE?

It helps artists to see all perspectives of an object before them and as such be able to create engaging and interesting pieces.

DOES SEEING IN NEGATIVE SPACE ENHANCE DRAWINGS?

Yes, seeing in negative space enhances drawings. Because by using negative space, you can create a cool mirror effect as well as bringing more attention and depth to the piece.

Negative/Positive Space cutout - Matthew Nguyen

My Negative space cutout of an image of a tree. The back sheet of paper is pink, while the blue is cut out and glued onto the piece of paper
My Negative space cutout of an image of a tree. The back sheet of paper is pink, while the blue is cut out and glued onto the piece of paper

Negative Space in layman's terms is what is in the background of an image.  Negative space is generally what isn’t what needs to be seen in an image, while the positive space is all that does need to be seen.  More simply put, positive space tends to be closer while negative space tends to be further back. When negative and positive space are drawn as only single colors rather than the range of colors or with outlines, it appears to be as if it is a silhouette of the image.

In the cutout, I found the negative space to be what is not the tree and that on the drawing was what was already white, and the positive space was in grey.  However, that only gave me defines between negative and positive space. To actually see what is negative and positive space, it took looking at the image and seeing “aha!” this is a tree and this figure is the positive space, so thus the rest must be negative space.

It helps an artist to see in negative and as it shows them what to focus on and what parts are more important in an image.  It allows them to split up and comprehend the image based on certain figures. Seeing in negative space ultimately enhances drawings as it gives a more realistic effect to drawings as it allows people to contrast between background and foreground and see what is supposed to be seen in an image.

 A. What is negative space
Negative space is the space around and between the image of an object.
B. Explain how you found negative space in your cut out?
I first cut out the image from the white paper. Then I put those pieces onto the yellow paper, the color that I wanted the tree to see. I placed th image of the tree on the yellow and cut it out. From there, I placed the yellow tree on the black paper, the color that I wanted to be the background. I placed one place of the yellow tree, or rather the background of the yellow tree, on one side. From there, I just flipped the image to mirror the missing part.
 C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?
It helps an artist to see negative space because negative space helps define the image and provides a background to the image.
D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?
It does enhance drawing because it the draws attention to the image that the artist wants you to see.

NEGATIVE TREE (2)
Negative Space surrounds objects. For example, if you draw a lollipop, the lollipop is not a part of the negative space, the space surrounding the lollipop is. If a dog is standing in a field, the dog is the positive space, and the grass around it is the negative space.

In my cutout, there was a tree standing in a field in front of the sky. In terms of space, I decided that the tree was the positive space, and the sky was the negative space.

It helps for an artist to see in negative space in order to easily determine what the subject is, and what the background is.

It depends. If the artist wants to put emphasis on their subject, it helps to learn how to draw in negative space. Same goes if they want the background to be emphasized. But, negative space does not matter if the artist wants the whole picture to be seen.

Negative space is what surrounds an object. In my image the negative space is the orange since they were not cut out, therefore, they surround the yellow which was cut out. It helps an artist see in negative space so that they can give their artwork pop. It helps to give there work dimension. Seeing in negative space does help to enhance drawings. It helps to make them jump off of the paper. If something is in negative space it can people will look at it for longer because there is more to think about.

Negative space is the space that is around the art piece that can either bring out the art piece or bring out the background. Negative space can help form two "figures" depending on how the art it. The foreground might be in white, while the background is black and it is just up to interpretation on how see the artwork.

The way I found negative space in my picture is my using my artist eye. I looked at the image I had to cut out and saw that the blue sheet is the negative space. I am putting the pink sheet on top of it, and that makes the blue negative and helps form a picture with the pink sheets.

I think that it helps for an artist to see negative space, because seeing negative space can bring out the image. Negative space is just as important as positive space and the artist needs to know. The artist wants to make sure that background is not too big so the image in focus is not in focus. If there is not enough background, it will make the picture look busy and maybe that is not what the artist needs or wants.

I think seeing negative space in an image does enhance the image, because you can see more. You can see two different stories with both the negative space and the positive space. The negative space will also bring out the image and can help the viewer see the image even better and more clear.

Negative space is creating the spaces between the foward most objects. I found negative space in the house I drew by cutting out one side of the house. I then took out all of the parts that I cut out, and the outline that remained. I then glued them onto the paper. This gives the apperence of the other side of the house, without it actually bring there. It helps an artist see in negative space, because the spaces can help elevate a piece and make it more powerful. I feel that in most cases seeing in negative space enhances a drawing. It can make it a lot more appealing to the person looking at it, and really makes the art look more professional.

Negative/Positive Space Cut Out

A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

Negative space is the space between and around the subject or subjects.

B. Explain how you found negative space in your cut out?

I found the negative space in my object by looking at light and dark areas in the image I used. Then, I cut out the positive space from my image, only leaving the negative.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

It helps an artist to see the negative space because it makes it easier to draw the positive space. Seeing the negative space makes it easier to have the proper proportions of the subject.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?

Seeing in negative space does not enhance drawing for negative space does not require complexity. With negative space there are not details of the subject.

Negative Space 101

IMG_1253

Negative space is the space either in or surrounding an object in a picture. It helps create a real picture by showing the outline of the true subject. it pictures get shown more vividly but it does not show any inside detail mostly outlines of things and only where there is space shown. In my cutout I found negative space in my cut out by looking at the at the spaces that made up the shape of the image and the space outside of the image. And the space that helped enhance the drawing and make it what I saw. It helps an artist to see negative space by them being able to be diverse with how they draw and also if they make abstract art it could help them make multiple images with negative and positive space. Seeing in negative space can enhance images because it can intrigue the viewers more and help them to expand their mind. It also allows artist to make art that has little boundaries.
