Keiasha Lumpkins Capstone

Posted by Keisha Lumpkins in Capstone - Herman on Friday, May 31, 2013 at 10:04 am
The goal of my capstone wasn't set on one topic or one event but to dress observe and explore why we need our music departments. I wanted to show different aspects of what music does for children and how it develops young children and gives them a purpose to do something.

Being a activist of music education, and a musician myself, I wanted to take on my journey of music and when the capstone project was presented to me in 9th grade, I already had an idea of what I wanted to do. As my senior year approached, started my capstone in mid October. I went to different public schools, set in music classes and recorded different activities going on in the classes. I also assisted teachers and made sure that the kids knew what they were doing. I created a little short snippet video, have pictures of different events, and actual interviews from a new young band in Philadelphia made up of young men who shows their talents. I also helped out with a music show that is going to be shot May 31st, 2013. This is at Andrew Hamilton Middle School in West Philadelphia.

A lot of music departments are being cut along with a lot of other cuts as well. Music isn't just a class where kids make noise, but it is where people lives change. Music teachers job isn't just to sing songs, clap hands, and sing "do re me fa so la ti do's" but they have a purpose. Music teachers were once in music classes and developed a love for music when they were young. Music isn't just a job it is a hobby, and this is what my capstone is addressing. We need to keep the music departments in schools.

Reflection

I believe that there are a lot of problems with our country's food system. Our country consists of so much unhealthy variety of foods. Also how people can get their foods that people have. A lot of our cities are obese because there aren't a lot of markets available for people to get real food from. Instead we have a lot of corner stores that have unhealthy snacks for people to eat. If those stores consist of a lot of market food in there, then people would have a reason to buy healthy snacks. I see the biggest problem with our food system is, how food is advertised. If places advertise healthier food, and create more markets, instead of prisons, and disciplinary schools. Having more markets benefit better living. In my neighborhood, I have a market 3 blocks from my house. Within those 3 blocks, there are about 10 corner stores that I encounter. I think that eliminating the problem will result in a better solution. This unit has made me think about what I eat and where my foods came from. Since out unit I have changed my eating habits. I have been eating better then before for 3 weeks. I feel a lot better and I think that it impacts my life because it has made me feel better and helped me.

Analysis

Our potato salad is very simple; 6 potatoes, 12 boiled eggs, a jar of mayonnaise, an onion, some salt and pepper. The potatoes were most likely grown in Idaho or Washington which are two of the biggest potatoes growing states. They are then put on a truck and driven to Pennsylvania and put on the supermarket shelves. Potatoes are a wonderful food because they are almost fat free, cholesterol free, and sodium free. They are also an excellent source of nutrients, high in potassium, fiber, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, and protein. In addition, they are low calorie. As for the eggs, they were most likely grown on a farm somewhere in Pennsylvania then shipped to the supermarket. Most likely, the farm was a chicken farm which specialized in the mass production of eggs. Different growth hormones were probably given to the chickens to make the eggs produce quicker. Eggs are a good source of Riboflavin, Vitamin B12 and Phosphorus, and a very good source of Protein and Selenium. However, they are high in saturated Fat, and very high in cholesterol. The mayonnaise originates from Spain but now it’s created all over the world with a simple mix of oil, egg yolk, and vinegar or lemon juice depending on your taste. For this recipe we used Hellmann's light mayo which has half the calories, only 35, and uses cage-free eggs. Onions are mainly grown in Idaho and Washington but some are grown in Pennsylvania. Little growth hormones are used in growing onions because they grown very easily. They are low in calorie and fat yet high in fiber. The salt comes from a salt mine or is made from sea water and the pepper is made from a tropical plant grown native to India. Salt and pepper is low in calorie but obviously high in sodium. The total calorie count of a serving of potato salad is about 350 calories per cup. They only part of the meal that is processed is the mayonnaise because we chose to use Hellman’s mayo instead of homemade. The meal was very cheap, the most expensive part was the mayonnaise which was about $6. This could be because the mayo traveled the farthest or it takes the most to produce. Unfortunately, we could not find a listing for where Hellman’s mayo is produced so we do not know how far it traveled to get to the supermarket. As for the other ingredients, they could all be home grown expect for the salt and pepper. This would be safer because there would be no growth hormones or pesticides but the process would take so long that it would just be easier to buy the products from the store. Most of the products were probably grown in Pennsylvania or a nearby state anyway, so it doesn’t take much to ship them to the supermarket.

P.A.T.R.I.O.T Act

Posted by Keisha Lumpkins on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at 9:04 pm

The Patriot Act was a response to the terrorist attacks of 9/11. It allows the government to track things such a personal communication for the purpose of the government. What the government is not understanding is the passing this act would stop privacy and freedom rights. Yes the Patriot have numerous reasons to improve the security expense of privacy, but people are having trouble with the Act. This law gives people to believe the U.S is going to have a bad reputation. People who are from different countries that want to come to America, it would change their perspective because now the United State are under surveillance. Especially for people that come from the middle east that are muslim.

We are not saying that the government can't investigate terror plots, but taking it as far as protecting the rights and lives of the people. Interfearing with the personal lives of the American People. The Patriot Act should focus more in cracking terrorist plots and pontential attacks, then spying on Americans. This shows that the Act has to much power over the people.

Blog Post 1: Enemy of the State

Posted by Keisha Lumpkins on Sunday, September 16, 2012 at 11:42 am

The way I felt about the movie, as the beginning started I didn't think that some people in the government and congress would do something as shady as what happened to Phillip Hammersley. It made me think about how the government can turn on one another. It also made me feel that it would turn on the people in the country. The government only let the people hear what they want to hear.

The government in the film is portrayed as shady, insane, and not trusted. In the beginning when Phillip Hammersley video of him being killed was revealed because the government was tapping the guy phone that switched the tape at the murder scene. This made me feel that the government does not care about people privacies. Looking closely at the movie when they were tapping the guy phone that had the video of Phillip Hammersley death, they were tapping his phone line and computer for their own safety. This makes me feel that some people in the government only does things to protect themselves and not that people.

The government should not tap phone lines, computers, or anything that has to do with people privacies. I do believe they should tap phone lines if they desperately believe that it is an attack on America or something suspicious. National Security as went up since 9/11 and other attacks that succeeded. This mean that the government needs to take action on the bigger things. Tapping phones is not the only way people connect. Computers aren't the only way. If that is the case, are they going to start checking our mail that comes to our homes? Our facebooks,or twitters? People are getting more clever as the years go by. They know the government expects so they do the unexpected. Such as 9/11.

What if ? - JFK Died in the PT-109 Boat of World War II

Posted by Keisha Lumpkins in American History - Laufenberg on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 12:12 pm
This is the link for my benchmark

My point of divergence was not having JFK exist. There was a point where JFK almost died before he was assassinated. JFK was in World War II. He was in charge of the PT-109 boat in the war. JFK and his crew men were sent out north, PT-109 was not notified that enemy engagement was happening. PT-109 was in the path of Japanese destroyer Armagiri. Armagiri ran down PT-109. The captain of the destroyer was not aware. PT-109 was cut in half. JFK along with seaman Andrew Jackson Kirksey and Harold W. Marney. Which results in him not becoming President.
My future wasn't a specific things changed just in 2012 but the dates leading up to the things that changed in the United States. I just talked about things that happened in 1960s to 2012.

I changed important things that happened when JFK was president and changed things that happened because of him since he doesn't exist anymore. What I liked about this project was that I could change what ever I wanted and there was little to no limitations. This was a little challenging finding a specific time to change and a specific thing to change. It was challenging finding specific things that had changed in the United States as well. The most interesting fact that I had found out doing this project was that JFK wasn't the best at the space fund. It seem to show that when he was assassinated the space fund was more funded then it was before. Systemic changed impact the historical recored because it had changed things that happened in America and things that could have happened that could have changed the course of American history just because one single person or event didn't happen. What I would change would be more time on the project and having more information then I already have.

Conversacion #3

Pre-Conversacion

What will your topic of conversation be?

In this blog post I will talk about is traveling to places.

What are 5 questions related to your conversation goal that you can think of ahead of time to ask your partner?

Have you ever traveled outside your country?

Do you want to visit other countries?

Have your family traveled to other countries?

Is traveling hard for you?

How is the country?

How do you anticipate your partner will respond to your questions?
I believe that they are going to respond in English mostly because since that Is the language they are practicing, they will want to feel comfortable answering in english, while I ask in spanish.

What are you looking forward to about this conversation?
I am looking forward to learning about the person, and where they want to travel. Also if they like to travel

What are you nervous about?

I am nervous about getting something wrong or saying something that they will not understand. Hopefully they can help me if I am wrong. For the most part I am not as nervous because I am more comfortable now since I have done this 2 other times before.

Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?

I spoke with Vidal from Venezuela. I Choose him because he was learning English but was a spanish native. He also started talking to me first so I thought why not create and continue the conversation. He also likes sports like me.Also his conversation was getting a little more interesting than the others because, he ask questions and helped me when I was wrong.

What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?
I learned that never traveled before but would like to travel to japan, alemania, londres, and francia. He also works in a little cafe in his town.

How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

He made me feel comfortable about asking questions about sports because he felt comfortable about answering. Also, he helped me out because he was answering questions that I was asking which made it easier to talk about my topic.

What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

I did well was greeting him properly, I asked many questions and was respectful about what I said to him. I kept with the topic of conversation and made sure that that is all we talked about.

What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

I improved on talking to someone in spanish and they understanding me. I also improved on learning my spanish more and being more comfortable about speaking it.

What will your topic of conversation be?

It will just talk about learning English and Spanish and how they like learning and learn more about the language.

What are 5 questions related to your conversation goal that you can think of ahead of time to ask your partner?

Do you like English?

Is English Easy or hard?

How do you learn English?

Is English the only language taught? Why?

How do you Separate spanish from english?

How do you anticipate your partner will respond to your questions?
They might be as nervous as I am. I think that they will be more comfortable answering questions about their own language because they are more familiar with it. They can asnwer my questions about their language better than I can answer about theirs.

What are you looking forward to about this conversation?
I am looking forward to learning about the person about their country, and how they feel about learning about a new language.

What are you nervous about?

I am nervous about getting something wrong or saying something that they will not understand. Hopefully they can help me if I am wrong.

Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?

I spoke with Bruno from Argentina. I Choose him because he was learning English but was a spanish native. He also was a friendly person who didn't mind helping me with spanish.

What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?
I learned how he used spanish and how he learn english. He likes to watch Tv series in english and understand expressions with movies and Tv.

How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

He made me feel a little more comfortable about speaking spanish because someone didn't make fun of the way I spoke spanish they actually helped me with what I did wrong and correct me so I can do better next time.

What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

I did well in greeting Bruna and asking him many questions about spanish and how I can learn what to say and what not to say. I spoke spanish through out mostly the conversation. That was a big goal for me.

What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

What went well was working together on the project and and coming up with ideas of presenting the project. Also coming up with the numbers on the project to represent the crisis. What did not go well is making the picture fit the whole entire paper. Also coming up with the ideas of making the numbers on the info-graphic. What we would do differently this time would be use actual pictures this time to show the numbers that we wanted to show. Also I would try to make it bigger on the Large paper that was provided. I think that the ones that we excel on are smarter, creative, visual, and smarter. We could have been more transparent on the product. The mining people on the info-graphic made our product creative because it shows how the mining affected the area. Some elements of designed were harder because it was hard to have a picture to show all 10 specific aspects of the project.

PERDIDO EN EL AMOR Con Chelsea y Lulu

Describe the Q3BM: what was the assignment?

The Assignment was too create a presentation on a problem someone has about love. Such as a radio, a video etc.

What did your group decide to do and why?

We decided to do a radio show. We thought that it would be more entertaining for people to hear.

What did you learn from doing this project?

I learned how to work with others in a project, communicate, and also more spanish experience. Hearing how you pronounce words and what you can improve on.

How do you feel about your final product?

I feel we put a lot of effort in to the project. There are somethings that could be improved on, but they are minor. Over all we did a great job as a group.

If you could do your project all over again, what would you do differently/the same?

We would make the radio show pop out more. More interesting, effects, also maybe a movie next time. So it could be more visual to people.

What I decided to create was a wordle/picture collage of different words and phrases about Theodore Roosevelt. Also I wanted the different cartoons that we looked over  in class about the Anti-Trust law, and different monopolies. I did this type of format because I didn't want to make something big that cold confused people but each word describes Teddy and what he has done. I also used the quote "All change is not growth, as all movement is not forward." - Ellen Glasgow. I used this because it relates to the essential questions that we have to answer.

Nothing will get accomplished unless someone steps up and take charge. Also that causes change. The essential questions are all about change. Different systems can't change if no one wants it to change. It takes a leader to take the courage to put change forward for the future. When one individual takes action in to changing something, then other individuals follow after. A good example would be Teddy and Obama. A lot of people compare Obama at times to Teddy because change is happening. A lot of policies are changing because of Obama. Obama wanted to take charge and see what past Presidents agendas were. It seems as though he picked Teddy as one of them. Teddy Roosevelt changes inspired Obama to make more changes.

Some questions that I have are, what other presidents wanted to follow in Teddy Roosevelt place? Or at least be as successful as Teddy?

"Back Inside"

Chapeter 2: Revealed

Chris and Kori found a new place that was never revealed in their Regional Blue-Ford High School. What was this? They did not know. As what was known, that their high school was not a high school before. The school was hiding this secret room for ages. Or did they not know? All Chris Row and Kori Santiago knew was that this was another adventure they were going on.

"You do it", says Kori demandingly to Chris, "I am not going to pull it."

Chris turns to Kori, "The school must been hiding this old library for years! No one even knew we had a library."

"What school do you know that doesn't have a library genius? Obviously something wasn't right in this school", says Kori.

"How about we both pull the book from the shelf together Kori?"

"Okay on the count of three."

Chris and Kori Count to three simultaneously, "One, Two, Three!"

Chris and Kori had never seen anything like it. The doors slide open and there it was. A secret room behind the unknown library shelves. The doors slid open, with the dust blowing in their faces. It wasn’t something Chris and Kori wanted to find, but knew that they would find something out of the ordinary. Chris thought that his was out of this world. They both slowly walk into the revealed room anxiously.

"It looks like a science lab?" says Kori as she idles her way into the secret room. Chris was astonished by what he saw. He knew that school was hiding something, but didn't know it was hiding more then just a library. It was hiding a whole science lab.

"This is not an ordinary science lab Kori, this looks like a science-engineer lab!"

Kori looks at Chris as if had something on his face. "What is the difference? A lab is a lab Chris, I think we should get out of here like now."

Chris looks around at the machines that are in the mysterious room. He glances at many machine parts in the room.  "You don't know anything Kori, do you pay any attention in Engineer class? I think you don't." Kori rolls her eyes at Chris and acts like he say what he said out his mouth.

"I'm not going to argue with you right now but we need to ge-." Chris interrupts Kori's raving.

"This can't be! It just can't be!" Chris looking at the weird machines almost the size of an elephant. "Do you know what this means Kori? "Kori looks at Chris as if he was an insane maniac. Chris was always getting into trouble. When ever Chris is getting himself into trouble Kori is always right along with him. She knew that she was going to be stuck in this dilemma and there was no way out.

"Chris what is this thing?" ask Kori as she walks into the machine. "It looks like some type of time portal."

Kori quickly gets out of the machine after Chris told her what it was. "Time portal? Do they even exist?" Chris looks at Kori as if she said something foolish. Kori was a bright girl, but Chris always says something to her that doesn’t sound right.

“Obviously not in this time Kori, but this means that our school was once a home for science engineers. I know this because I heard Ms. Lacebark talk about it last year to her senior class. “No one ever believed any thing Ms. Lacebark said, not even her own husband. Everyone thought she was a crazy old lady that lived at home with 6 cats. She always came to science engineering class smelling like cats. “

Kori stops and looks at Chris, “Why would you believe anything that lunatic says? She doesn’t even remember what assignments she gives us from the previous day! How can she remember that scientist used to work here?”

Chris keeps observing the machine and sees something lighting up. “Kori come here look a button, and it looks like it is still lighting up.” Kori stands behind Chris with her hands on his shoulders seeking as if she wanted comfort.

“What is that Chris? Don’t yo-“. Chris presses the blue button and something miraculously happened. Both kids jumped back and were afraid of what was going on. “Chris what is it Chris I am scared.” Kori was afraid and got closer to Chris. “Kori I was right, it is a time portal or some sort.” Kori and Chris stood up slowly and walked toward the machine. It was something they never seen before. The light was bright glowing brighter then the sign. The machine was huge, with a flat bottom and a circular body. The glow kept sparkling. It seem the sparks was getting bigger.

“Chris do not go near it! You don’t really know what that thing is.”  Kori held Chris back, but Kris was determined to check it out. “Kori I’m not going to touc-.” Chris and Kori both stopped. There was this sound, a sound as if they were not alone in the room. Someone else was in the room. “Do you here that Kori?” Chris holds on to Kori like the way she was holding on to him. “Chris someone else is in here, or “something.” They both stopped and listen to the sound. It didn’t sound like a person but more of an animal of some sort. It looks like it was coming from behind the science table with all the humungous machine parts.

“Kori don’t move the sound is coming closer!” she holds her hand so she won’t move. Kori looks at Chris. “We have to get the hell out of here like now Chr-.” Chris pulls Kori and runs. “Kori watch out!”

Chris pulls Kori and runs with her. What beast was chasing after them? It was big, hairy, and breath was dripping drool. When Chris and Kori look in front of them, they ran in side the portal. Before they knew it, they were in another world unknown to man. Let alone them selves. What place did this teleportation device take them?

    • How did you group go about making a decision for what to focus on for the project?
We got together and set idea and points. We made a list of things that we thought would work and eliminated as we went over the list.

    • 11th grade Essential ? - What is the role of the individual in creating and sustaining change?
We could change the Country, with that change comes the world. Having the young people change the way we vote can put more positive look on young people with all of the things that go on with young people.

    • How has your understanding of the electoral process and whether or not the US is a democracy evolved during this unit?
It made me realize how important and unfair the electoral process is and makes me want to pay attention more in voting process.

    • How did you decide to best relay a message to a national audience with your marketing campaign?
We just wanted to have people realize that voting is important and that way you vote affects the outcome.

Why I Write

Posted by Keisha Lumpkins in English 3 - Rami on Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 1:02 pm
Why I Write

Expressing myself is hard enough

To say it out loud is really tough

Thinking what I say will be so bad

Worrying about if people would laugh

Figuring out what to do

How to get my words out for people too

Homework assignments easiet thing

Writing down my own words to say

Only thing I can do is write

Scared of the wrong I might

What to do when I can’t speak

Will my words I say get the best of me

Afraid of embarrassment from my peers

Now I just write down what you want to hear

Why I write is a question that I need to answer

Why I write something I can’t answer

Because I write for many reasons

My writing changes more then the seasons

What is your song supposed to communicate?
Wanted to communicate who I am and where I am from.

What are you especially happy about with your first draft?
Yes because I took my time and made sure that every grammar was right. Also, I had got help from my peers.

What would you like to improve about your refrán?
I want to make it more detailed. Felt as thought my refran wasn't creative enough.

What did you learn?
More of learning words over again and getting them familiar in your brain. Also writing songs that involves spanish words that I never knew.

What are you like/dislike about your product?
I like that I used a spanish instrumental and made it my own. Some things I think that I dislike are the way I pronounce some words.

If you were to do this project all over again, what would you change?
Would write about something else that would make my song more creative, also challenge my self more.

Something that surprised me most about this information is how different events during the corse of the time periods had affect the change in the immigration rate. Also, how the population growth had change. It seems as though what ever happened in America at the time that immigrations were coming, if something happened in America, the rate would drop. I realize that the obvious thing to the immigration rate problem was that every time something happened in America, it affected the rate.

The US presently is going through an economica problem. I wouldn't think that majority of immigrants would come to the US. It would be a increase from that last trend in the graph. It wouldn't. I do believe that the trend will increase dramatically over the next two decades because America might develope into a more powerful country than it ever was with technology and money. People would want to come here because of things like that.

We came up with the decision for a board game because it would be something people would want to look at and catch their eye. Also, we represented the amount of immigration rate each year with an object to co-assign with the board game. It give the dates on each space and what happened through the corse of those dates. It was challenging to represent each date because we couldn't figure out how to represent the object we use for the numbers. We than decided to graph the object. It turned out to be successful in the end.

The part of the work that was challenging was representing each dates because it was difficult to represent the numbers for the dates. Some of the problems we came was how to visualize the project.

What we would have done differently is try and make the numbers different on the project. Make it more clear than it is so people can understand it more. Over all I like the project.

yo vengo filidelfia

yo vengo me

yo vengo todos por encima

(refran)

My refran is just about who I am and what i do. That's could be described where I am from. I am happy that I can write about what I want in my song. I would like to improve by adding more to my refran and make it better. I was difficult because I didn't know what to write about at first.

I Am From

Posted by Keisha Lumpkins in English 3 - Rami on Friday, September 9, 2011 at 2:45 pm

I am from struggle

Determination to do better than my family members

I can’t count on others but on my self

From tears and laughs

Smiles that are fake as plastic

I’m a goof ball

And serves a fantastic ball as well

And dribbles at my own risk

I am from music that soothes the soul

Where talking to others is hard

Who mom expects everything from you

Who little brother is just annoying

And my little sister who I call “Girl”

Working and Learning a priority

Christians who believe in God

Where pizza and hot dogs are a main food

Guess its just our favorite

I am from almost drowning in a pool

From always being the short chubby girl

Now I am the one they want

I am from a dangerous place

But the people only see that

Not the good in the area

I am from doing what I love most

Living and caring for those who care for me

I’m from things that turn into disasters

Hard to over come things

But do live through the hard times

I am from “ what if my father would love me “

Never had one to do so

Whom mom struggles but it strong

I’m from a life where wrong is right and right is wrong

Either way, I am from me and I plan to stay that way

End Of Year Reflection

Posted by Keisha Lumpkins in English 2 - Block on Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at 11:23 am
You never would think that in a English class you would get so many opportunities like we experience in Mr. Block's English and History class. English class was a fun experience. You would never think that you would be able to express yourself as much as we did in Mr. Blocks English class. We created trials, made poetry, did many journals that had us thinking about a lot of things that you wouldn't talk about or write about in your normal english class. I never got a chance to express my self like that before. Writing it down in a journal. Now everyday I write down my thoughts in my journal the thoughts a I have.

One thing that stood out to me in english class was the different movies and clips we watched in class. In stead of just using the internet to find information, the videos and clips that we watched in class really gave me a feel about what we was learning. One clip was the torture clips. That stood out to me because you wouldn't think that some people would actually go ahead and hurt someone until the pain gets worst. Why they didn't stop? I never could answer that question until we watched the video in class and we discussed it. Now I know the answer to that question.

English class opened people eyes. Make them think of things that they never would think about before. Something that I really enjoy class was when we did the interview of a family member about their lives. It was a long process but it was fun because we got a chance to actually look into someone else's lives and ask any questions we were thinking about. It was a good project because we could edit it, and make it into a certain type of interview. With different effects in it.

It's this year has to end so soon. Some other things that I really enjoyed in this year of english was the thesis papers we did. It wasn't like a regular paper you had to write like a normal essay. We had to make an argument that people go go against. It was a learning experience for me because it made me build of my writing skills. It makes you think about all the things that you can connect your paper to such as outside sources. I loved challenging myself.

Have you ever written a play that could be screened to an audience in your class. Well I have. The most fun part that I think that was awesome was creating a monologue. I never made a play before. But creating a monologue was fun. It wasn't what I thought it was going to be. It wasn't like creating a actual play because you had to change somethings around and have once person in a scene. It was fun when Kate came because she really helped us out a lot. It was the bees thing that I ever done in a class before. I don't know if my monologue was good enough. I think that we all worked hard over the couple of months and made a good quality project. I am happy I got that opportunity to do something that creative.

She is lives in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, with her mother Maria-Antonia, her little sister, Margareth, and her little brother, Matheus, who is named after their father. She lived in Rio De Janeiro all her life. She is of Brazilian and African-American Decent. She considered Afro- Brazilian. Living in Rio De Janeiro and not having a lot, her mother struggles to make a better life for her three children. It is really Dangerous in Rio De Janeiro. Many shootings and drug trades happened especially where Marcela lives. She live in the Favelas (Slums) Marcela has a gift. She has a wonderful voice, but her mother doesn’t approve of her wanting to be a singer. Marcela belives if she gets to be a singer, her mother and her siblings will have a better life. They move to America, where Marcela tries out for this Competition called “Got What it takes?” But before they get there, they have to get throught living in Rio De Jeneiro. She ends up winning the Contest, and her family lives changed for the better.

Act 1: Scene 1

As I heard yelling from my cracked opened door, I peeked out of it and seen her, the silence in our room, only thing i could hear is her asking for a “few more days”. I was only 6,  and I knew something wasn’t right. Only time when she asked for “a few more days” is the man came with his clipboard, his black pen, and his pliers. Will he really do it this time? That thought always came through my head when he came. I always was afraid of it happening every time. As I heard her plead, and scream and yell “please I have three kids, they can’t sleep with out light, we won’t be able to see anything. Please for my kids!” I could hear how she felt in her voice. Her tears falling down her face, with my tears following right after. The only thing he could say was, “I’m only doing my job.” I heard that about a million times. I knew my little brother and sister wanted to see what was going on. The three of us looked out the door, aware that something was wrong. The only thing we can do is sit there and watch him walking towards the door, she constantly held on to him and tried to take his pliers out his hand. I knew that this time, was for real. He was going to do it. He walked out the door as my mom yells through it. “Please!................Please!.” I can see her crying, on her knees praying to God, as my little brother and sister, and I watched her in the darkness of the room. That was 2 years ago.

Act 1: Scene 2

Its so early in the morning. I hate getting up and cleaning the house.(Marcela puts on her one pair of shoes) But I do this for mama, she gets up so early for work, she really doesn’t have time to clean, or cook anything, So i make sure mama work is done, But let me go make sure she is ok. I know that she is really tired. I’m glad that they gave her a day off because she has been working non stop. I am surprise she got a day off today. This waking up 3 hours earlier than I usually do for school is too much. Why do my school have to be 1 hour away from my house? And on top of that I have to walk there! Well its safer than catching a cab, train, or bus. I wouldn’t want to get car jacked, blown up on the train, or a stick up on the bus by some dumb idiot. Let me go cook for my little Margereth and Matheus. I am sure my mama is going to want something on her stomach, haven’t seen her eat that much lately either. (After Marcela clothes is on, and book bag is set, she walks in the kitchen and makes some oatmeal, that usually last the whole day) Finally done. Well I am going to go check on Margereth, and Matheus, and Mama, just to make sure they are sound asleep. (Peaks through three rooms) Time for me to leave. Let me hurry so no one will see me walking outside, and try to attack me like they almost tried last week. (She exits while throwing her book bag over her shoulders).

Act 1: Scene 3

(Marcela mother, Maria, is at work, and is talking to her friend (Lena) that works at her Job with her. She works at a factory making and sewing clothes. They are on their 6 minute lunch break and her mother is talking to Lena about what she should do about her living style because she can’t keep on living like this).

(Maria and Lena talk and walk while walking to the table to eat their lunch) Ah Lena i don’t know what to do anymore. (pulls out her bowl of oatmeal the same one that Marcela made that morning). Don’t tell Marcela this, but everyday I look at her face, and I see how she feels. I know she wants to cry inside, but she has to stay strong for Mathues, and Margereth. I don’t want none of my children growing up, and then having kids, and living in the same condition as we are living now. I hate seeing my little girl with her head down, looking like this is her fault. I know she feels like that. I hate seeing all my children like that. I remember when I told their dad that i was pregnant with Margereth. I shouldn’t have told him that, or atleast I should have pretended like I didn’t know I was pregnant. Don’t get me wrong I love my ilttle “menina”. Her curious but is always getting into something. But i knew there dad,  He just couldn’t keep having kids. He said it was too much to take care of three kids. He had a plan for Mathues and Marcela and I. But when Margereth came along he said that he just couldn’t keep putting what he wanted to do on hold everytime a “New Trouble” comes along. Then he left right after she was born. (She takes a scoop of oatmeal and looks at it) You know, Marcela made this oatmeal. She makes it every morning for Matheus, and Margereth. Well at least I think she does. I know she has to get up about 3 hours early every morning. She is a little “mim”. (Starts to tear up) I can’t let her be that though. I want her to be a better me. I know that Marcela has a gift, I just hope that it is a gift that is worth it and wont give her no down falls. “Deus me ajude” (Lena pats Maria back and tells her encouraging words) I have to stay strong for my “criancas”. Where we are living, is not a good place for them. What will I for school when the younger two can go to school, what will I do when Marcela wants to go to “college”. I don’t know, but what ever the answer is, i pray to Dues that it will come fast. (Bell Rings for lunch time over).

Act 1: Scene 4

(Marcela is at school, and she is sitting in class. They had to write about themselves and what they wanted to do in their life, but forgets all about it because she had to cook for her little brother and sister. Her teacher tells her to stands up and do it earlier. Marcela goes to one of the good schools, in the richer, and better places in Rio De Jeneiro.  She doesn’t have alot of things like the other kids, she tends to get picked on. In this scene you will see Marcela talking about what she wants to do, and see how the kids react to it).

(Kids walk in the class room and sits down with there written papers on there desk)
I do not have my paper. (stands up with her head down) I don’t have my paper. (Kids laugh) I forgot all about it. I had alot of other things to do. (Teacher tells Marcela to do her recite it orally). Hi, my name is Marcela Scott. My last name comes from my dad who is black. He is from America. He left my mother and my little siblings after my sister was born. My mother works at a factory, and I have a little brother and sister, Margareth and Matheus. I live on the other side of Rio De Jeneiro. I walk to school everyday. I share a room with my little brother and sister. Our home is really small. My mother never has time to cook, clean, or even get us dress so I do all of those things. I get up early every morning. About 3 hours than I usually do (the kids and teacher yawns). When I get older, I want to be a famous singer (the kids and teacher chuckle) a-and see all the wonderful things the world has. I want people to sing my songs. I have so many American magazines, books, and on the radio I here them sing. When I was little before my dad left us, he said that he wants to go back to America. He told me that America has a place called “Hollywood”. (she moves away from her desk and walks to the front) Some where, people go to get there dreams crushed or made. Soon I want to go to “Hollywood”. It sounds so wonderful. I am sure it is paradise. America, America, come take me with you. I want make myself proud, especially my mama. Sometimes i don’t think that she wants me to be a singer. I heard her one day saying that “these “singers” go to the top and they just fall like that” but i am not going to fall at all. I am going to the top. I will get to America soon. (Pauses and look around) Thats is my life, and what I want to do when I get older. (Goes to her seat, and the kids laugh and make smart comments). I’m so glad today is friday.

Act 1: Scene 5

Marcele little sister ask Marcele to do her hair, and comb it. They are sitting in their room and Margareth is talking to Marcela.

(Margareth walks in the room and ask Marcela to comb her hair like she always do) Cela can you comb my hair please? (Marcela looks at her) Please Cela? Yay! Cela I like when you comb my hair. Its like when I was a baby I remember you would rub my hair when I was little and would hum some song. Can you hum that song Cela? (Marcela starts to hum a song). Yea that song. That song made me fall asleep all the time. OUCH! Cela that hurt. (Margereth rubs her head) Marcela when I get older I want to live in America. I heard you reading something about America. It was like a wonderland. When I live in America I want to sing and hum like you Cela. (Margereth starts to yawn) Then I could meet ummm Barney. I seen him on t... (Margereth falls alseep and Marcela takes her to bed)

Marcela just came home after a horrible day at school. She always being talked about from the kids at the school. Especially Lina, who is one of the prettiest, meanest girls in the school. She always talks about Marcela.

(Marcela runs in her room on the bed, crying) “ Why do they tease me? They have no idea what the hell I go through, or come from. Why me? Its not fair. I’m not the same as all the other kids. They all have everything. There hair is done a certain way, all their shoes are different everyday! (she sniffs and wipes her eyes) Then there’s me. The girl who hair has the same style, the same shoes, and the same backpack. All them kids got to be rich or something. But why they have all the riches, and things they want. They aren’t nice at all. And Lina. She is so beautiful, she has to be rich, or have a lot of money. I have no room to compete with that. She was right, I am nothing but a girl who has nothing but a pretty face. (She kicks off her shoes)

Act 1: Sence 6

Matheus run in the kitchen from Marcela. He broke her necklace. He wasn’t suppose to be in he room. He runs into the kitchen from her room and falls on all these papers.

Domestic Violence Relationships Where Do We Go From Here ?

Posted by Keisha Lumpkins in World History - Block on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at 11:40 am
Women are shown in ads and places that do not take them serious. But what happens when one is assaulted or a victim of domestic violence from there partner? Do the media talk about it, or do they talk more about the Victoria Secret Model new photo shoot. “In 2005, 1,181 women were murdered by an intimate partner.1 That's an average of three women every day. Of all the women murdered in the U.S., about one-third were killed by an intimate partner”, from an article from NOW.com (National Organization for Women). No one notices these violent acts, but do notice the other things instead of the one main focus, Women in Domestic.

In 2009, one of the biggest events was happening, The Grammy’s. Singer Rihanna and her ex-boyfriend singer Chris Brown got into an atication driving there way to the Grammy’s.  Rihanna wanted to see who Chris was texting, supposely he was texting an old girlfriend. Rihanna wanted to see the text and Chris refused. The argument eventually turned into an physical attack onto Rihanna. Chris Brown hit, punched and even hit Rihanna. Now no one is bashing on Chris Brown what had happened is done and over with. The question that is being raised is, how come that situation was broadcast the day after, and no other situation like that was. While the was going on, someone else, another female could have been getting assaulted, or beat on by her boyfriend. The media doesn’t focus on the bigger issue of not just what happened between Chris Brown and Rihanna, but what is happening to women all over the country.

Situations such as Domestic Violence are never really brought up in the media unless someone gets brutally hurt, or even to the point killed. When a woman is being abused by her partner, or who ever, they report it, but it isn’t taking serious. Almost 35% of abusers are released from prison on bail after being held for abusing a woman. This action should be looked at more closely. If the abuser is release, don’t you think that he is going to go after the woman that he abused that got him locked up? Abusers aren’t looked at as actually armed and dangerous, but more non-stable when they are the ones that are armed and dangerous.

Some other abuses can be when the person was little. They could be abuse when they were little, and the anger from that could build up and take it out on other people. This is another example of people who take their anger out on people. They hit, and even kill people. This isn’t intentionally but it is hurtful to others that are the ones getting abuse. Sometimes the person that is getting abuse is the person the abuser doesn’t wants to abuse but they picture you as the other person they want to get back at.

Fear is another way woman get abused more. If the woman do not come forward telling what is going on, than the abuse is going to continue. Many abuses are not reported every year, over A high number of domestic violence and child abuse cases go unreported in the country. Almost 450 cases each year or even more. The country is striving to find out more about these cases, but if no one is coming forward to and telling about these abuses, no one can help them and they can not be reported.

Women you must come forward, it’s not the countries fought but it is there fought for not bringing it to attention. We need to notice it more.

Keiasha Spanish - 2

What did you learn from doing this project? (skills, life lessons, words etc)

I learn how to manage my time and take the time out the day to learn how to say my day in spanish.

How do you feel about your final product?

I felt ok about it, it was fun.

If you could do your project all over again, what would you do differently/the same?

I would do it over again, I would make it longer and the day longer.

Did you enjoy this project? Why or why not?

I would do it over again, I would make it longer and the day longer. I would do it over again because it was a fun project and I learned alot.

English Essay ( Languages by Keiasha Lumpkins)

English Essay ( Languages by Keiasha Lumpkins)

When you are from where I am from, you have a choice to be with a certain group of kids. Sometimes when you aren’t in that group, you tend to catch on regardless. I never understood this “belonging to a certain group”. With me, I don’t consider myself belonging to a certain group. I just think that I am automatically put in that group because of where I am from and what I am attached to.

A lot of times when I am with my friends, there are things that they expect you to do and not to do. One time my friends and I were hanging out in from of my house. We all were laughing and joking around. Something I said shocked my friend. We were sitting in front of my house, he said, “Yo its cold outside, I be freezing my but off out here like WTF!” Then added on, “I know it really is cold out here.” After I said that all my friends laughed. They said that I sound like a “white girl”. I didn’t take offense when he said that, but when I think about it, how can you sound like a “white girl”.  I was wondering how is that possible to sound like someone I’m not. I didn’t think anything of it. A lot of times when I talk to my friends I say words and phrases that they aren’t used to me saying. They always say that I talk like this because I go to a school where you have to talk a certain way. It always amuses me when my friends make fun of the way I talk. Yes, sometimes I would use the slang that my friends use, but it comes natural at times when I talk differently around them. When you are expected to talk a certain way you or do certain things other people get surprised when it turns out different. They catch the right instead of the wrong way to speak. Only time this is opposite is when I am at home and my mom hears me speaking like the way I would talk to my friend.

It’s opposite when you’re home. My mom just got me these new boots. “These jawns is nice mom”. My mom looked at me and said, “jawn? You are not outside with one of your friends you don’t talk like that in my house.” After the fact I was thinking that how what I said was wrong? Then when I thought about it my mom was right. We shouldn’t talk like that to adults because when you get out in the real world, talking like that cant gets you a job. Its as if parents, or older people in general held high standards then younger people. Older people tend to not like it when younger people talk in slang or from where I am from “ghetto.” Just like when Maxime Hong Kingston said, “her mom didn’t like it that she sounded right, and said all the words right. It seems like a lot of times our parents don’t want us to speak if they don’t speak that way. These two scenes are connected because there is a lot of irony here. When you speak proper with your friends, its as though you are speaking wrong. A lot of times when I speak with my friends I don’t talk the way I would with my as I do my mom. When I talk to my mom pronounce all my words. When you are with your friends and you say proper things, its as though I said something wrong. It gets really confusing at times.

These two scenes connect because a lot of times you have to remember when and how you talk to your friends. The same thing goes for adults/parents. The world of language is different through people eyes. Some people don’t realize language but when you think about it, language is notice everyday, when you don’t notice.
