Uyen N. Donna S. Semaj S. (Algeria election May 26, 2012)

Posted by Uyen Nguyen in Globalization - Laufenberg on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at 10:32 am
As a group we split up and attempted to google, facebook, twitter and find out different websites that will get the connection so we can speak with an Algerian citizen. We finally came across a website called Students of The World  where we were able to find a student of our age and is from Algeria. This site helped us to get in contact with these teenagers. We started to email the first person, his name is Sofiane an 19 years old from Algeria. However, since Sofiane is not a political person he claimed. We did not successfully get the information that we need from him along with the interview that we wanted to do. But we did successfully get in contact with a couple of students from the Students of The World program.

We emailed a few students from the Students of The World program and didn’t get much success. We talked to them about our project and what we were doing. We then emailed the information and links to them and never received a response. The students that we emailed ranged between the ages of 17 and 19. They weren’t very up to date with the election and politics in the country but they tried (for a while) to help us as best as they could.

Summary of the Election/Country Politics

The Algerian election took place on May 10, 2012. The National Liberation Front, which has been Algeria’s ruling party for half a century, won over 220 votes and the other party only received 68. Clearly, the NLFs won by a landslide and the other party didn’t do too hot. On May 26, 2012, there was a protest against the election claiming that the votes were rigged to automatically give the ruling party the majority of the votes.

There were many people watching the Algerian national assembly elections on election day to see if they would go ahead and have another term with the ruling party or if something would change. The results were not at all surprising.

Algeria, which is the only country in North Africa was left without bother by the “Arab Spring” revolts, but some say that if the country doesn’t loosen up with the power, they might not be able to go another year without the revolts.

Though we did not successfully interviewed Algerian students about the election on May 10, 2012. But we had a chance to communicate with some of these students and learned a little about each and everyone of them. We also had a chance to do some research and learn more about the 2012 election that went on in Algerian.

However, it was not an easy process to get in contact with the students from Students of The World program. There were a number of students that did not want to contact us back because of personal reason and or was not aware of what we asked them to do. It was really challenging to find students that we can communicate with and ask for a favor. Also, since the election date were being moved from April 17 to May 10, many students from Algeria did not get a chance to figured some of the issues that happened in their country during the election time period. One of the most challenging task was to communicate with students from a different country and is under a different government system as the United State because we do not know what to expect on the outcomes.

My capstone was to participate, get certified by Red Cross to host a Blood Drive and also to recuit donors. My task was to plan out a Blood Drive event and to use my ability to organize everything and getting it into SLA. My partner(Gisela Giolafina) and myself organized multiple meetings and short announcement  to grabs students and teacher's attention to drawn themselves into participating and becoming a blood donor. We also got certified to train volunteers to make sure we have enough helpers and keeping our environment safe for all. We also reserved the drama studio specially for the event and maintain the amount of kiodic to minium level. With the help of students and teachers, we were able to do a run though and complete our project smoothly.

Uyen Nguyen Quarter 4 Benchmark: Globalization in Philadelphia

Posted by Uyen Nguyen in Globalization - Laufenberg on Friday, May 25, 2012 at 12:37 pm
For my quarter 4 benchmark, I choice to speak about the connection between Globalization and Philadelphia. This was a task which we were to take ten images in Philadelphia that represent the city and the relationship each photos has with globalization. This is one of the most interesting topic to take on since I can personally relate Philadelphia to one of the book that we read earlier in class called Collapse.

Most of the photos that I took are either from places that I visited daily or the environment that I am confortable around. In my opinion, every single places and symbol in Philadelphia represent globalization in one way or another. However, there are ten photos that stood out to me and define the connection with globalization.

In my opinion, Globalization is present everyday and everywhere.

Here's a link to my IWEB comparison of Brazil vs. Ecuador five point frame work.

Screen shot 2012-03-25 at 9.03.42 PM

It's being present in a form of iWeb as you can see above. The whole idea of using online site to create a website is really fun and creative, but I like to kick it back old school just a little. iWeb is actually a really interesting program to use because it allows you to do as many thing as you want on it. You can pick your own template and create your own web page without staying on the internet for too long and you also don't have to worry about the internet crashing on you, deleting your hard work. iWeb live right on your computer and also save every process of your work until the final produces!

Brazil and Ecuador? Why? Why Braziladorian?
I was actually assigned to work with a group to investigate in issues in the south region and Brazil/Ecuador happened to be my expert. Since I took a lot of time investigated in these two countries, I took some interest in wanting to learn more about the two together and find out it's similarity and differences. The five point frame work gave me an opportunity to learn more about both of the countries together and individually.

I came up with an idea of making a comparison video between the two countries using footages as well as short video clips to make it more entertaining and active. However, there were not many videos that were informative and useful for this specific project. After all, the iWed didn't fail to let me down, it was a really fun and interesting tool for me to use during the process of building this project. Perhaps it will be fun for others to view and get engage into the iWeb as well.

When giving this project, I came to a conclusion that I will enjoy putting this project together and enjoy the content part of the project. However, though out the research process, I've learned a lot about both of the countries together and individually. I would say that the research would be the best part of this project. I really enjoyed learning a little more about mining and the relationship that mining have opened Brazil as a whole. Also it was also interesting to know more about Ecuador since it's a small country from the south region that not many people talk about. I would say that learning facts between the two countries opened my eyes to see the other side of these two countries as well as how it's function.

I decided to make an iWeb to shows my knowledge and understanding form this project. However, if I were to do this project again. I would like to create a game or a video talk rather than using this method to show what I've learn to others. I feel like this is an informative way to teach others about the two countries and it's five points frame work. But it was not one of the most creative or fundamental ways to get viewers active and remember what they learned.

Uyen Nguyen (WORLD OF 100 WS AND ANSWERS)

Bar graph of Water sources in a world of 100:
The graph above represent the percents of people in the world that have access to safe/clean water vs. the number of people that does not have access to clean water from three different point of views. Base on the giving data from the chart, it shows that my estimate was way off from the actual world data. However, it was not far off as the class data. In this case my opinion was the total opposite of what it's being shown in the world for access to water. Because we are living here in the first world country, I thought that it was reasonable for everyone to have access to clean water. However, it's doesn't seem to be the same world wise since there are part of the world without the same access as the United State. Therefore, it would be reasonable for a number of people to have access to clean water but not all are. But by looking at this graph, most of the students are having the same opinion about this situation. Perhaps we all have the same thoughts about the situation.

Bar graph of poverty in a world of 100:

The following chart is a data of poverty and the numbers of people that are living in poverty based on three different point of views. In my opinion, there will be more poverty in the world vs. non. However, it was the total opposite on this one due to the fact that where I'm looking at is just at today's stage for the United State. But it's not really the case for other country around the world. Therefore, my opinion was off from what the world is based on. This graph shows that the actual statistic is the opposite of the people's opinion.
                              Fig. #3Screen shot 2012-02-09 at 5.38.52 PM
Bar graph of Technology in a world of 100:

For this graph, my estimate was about right compare to the number of the world out of 100 as well as the opinion of the class. It's far to say that almost or all of us have access to technology around the world today. It's apart of society in which at least more than half of the world can have access to these items. Therefore, it's reasonable to say that many of us do have access to the world' technology uses.

    1. Part #4
Over all, I was off by a lot in certain categories and was only correct in a couple of categories. It seem like that as a system we assumed that everything around us work the same way. However, it's not the case for the world based on this game. Base on the game, it has proved that my mind is really narrowed to what is really going on around the world. From playing this game and to actually have to think about what I think the world look like as to compare it to the real solutions. It's really shocking to compare my knowledge to everything that is going on around. One of the guess that I thought would be accurate but instead it's the total opposite was Poverty. In my opinion I thought that 70% of the people around the world would be living under poverty and only about 30% of the people will actually living above poverty. However, only about 2% of the world is living under poverty as to the status right now. It's really shocking due to the fact that the United State is high on unemployment rate. But since the percent of people that are living above poverty is high, it's not the case in the world right now. Another categories that I guessed correct but still seem shocking to me was Gender. Since we are living in a norma society today where we have a mixture of both genders. It's approviate to say that we do have an even amount of both genders in the world. This fact is true but shocking because we are still hearing news about more male than female around the world. Over all, the game was pretty tricky but yet interesting because it's a challenge that we have to do to fun out the possibles in between.

As a group, Natasha, Amaris and I decided to touch on the 4th Amendment to privacy rights and especially the student's privacy rights in school because this is something that's affecting others students compare to what we're dealing with as a special program at Science Leadership Academy. Although it's a really big issue for us because we are starting to getting into the zone of dealing with privacy rights that others are dealing with at their school. Since we're the only school without metal detectors and we have our own system of privacy rights, it was really important for us to know about other's rights as well as what will happen to us if we are being enforce to the rules that the District is giving to us. Therefore, we decided to go out to different school for an investigation as well as get to know about the similarity and differences between our community and the Districts community.

While going along in the project, we've learned more about our 4th Amendment better and get to know about the affects from it. Not only that but we get to experience what other teenagers have to face at their own school since we do not run on the same system as theirs. It was really surprising for us because we are one of the most luckiest community that does not have to face the privacy protection and searches as of to other schools.

Although we did get to stick with out plans on visiting other school and community to seek out for opinions as well as experiences. We did run into a lot of trouble because people were having issues with answering our questions, many did not have time to give us a summary of what we need to know. Also it was harder to schedule with other schools since they have a harder rule system than what we have here at SLA. We were also having problem with putting the whole documentary together due to the lack of Cspans footage we were able to find that will touch on our topic. We also have trouble with cutting out many opinions in the interview and picked out the right one for the documentary.

Over all the project went really well because we were able to work together as a team all the way till the end and as well as getting everything we needed for the video. However, if we were going to do this project again I would suggest that as a group we could have spend a little more time on this video, if we get to visit more schools and get more opinions on this topic than it would have been one informative documentary. It was wonderful feeling to work on this project and learn new things.

Bike Paths- Blog post #4

Posted by Uyen Nguyen in American Government - Laufenberg on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at 3:28 pm
Although it's the snow season and season for jackets as well as being in a car with heat! It's actually a wonderful season to fight for more bike paths! Since there will be more snows and more road/sidewalk being block by our wonderful weather creation. There will be less space for our bicycles to move around town due to the lack of paths as well as paths that sure will be covered by the snow this season. I am looking forward to work with Philadelphia Bikers  as well as my fellows to maintain our right to bike!

The most effective and efficient way to maintain people's attention and to make a change is by stepping in by making people realizes what they will have to deal with! One of the bigger idea that I have for this arrangement is to get down and dirty!
How?
1. Block off all of biker lanes
2. Stop bikers from biking
3. Take up all of the bike paths
Bikers need to see and realize all of the possibility that will take away their rights to remain moving and biking in a safe and efficient condition. By stoping bikers from biking, they will soon to realize how important it is to have a bike lane and continue to bike without any disruption.

70% of all citizen own a certain source of social network and anyone can get connected to one way or another. It'd be one interesting and quick idea to pass on the words by using social media. Many attentions will be grabbed by and many minds will be seeking into by the facts as well as the words passing on by the quickest method. I will be using my personal social network as well as connecting friends and family to spread the words for everyone to get involve!
However, majority of numbers will make a change but not necessary if one with power does not get involve with the majority. I will personally write a letter of petition to Philadelphia Councilman Bill Greenlee  as well as our Mayor Nutter  to address the issue.
I will do what it takes to keep out  Philadelphia Bikers alive and moving!

Uyen Nguyen Reflection

Our task is to print out a  "Free Application for Federal Student Aid" to complete the process. Over all it was challenge to do research and find everything that was required to complete the project. However, it was much easier to finish with a partner. We split up the work and help each other though each process from printing out the paper, getting all of the information that we needed to fill out the application to summarized everything we've done in a flowchart.

Before making a flowchart process, first we sat down and filled out the paper application and tried to figure out all of the information that will be included in the paper process. It was really straight forward, however it was not an easy process because we had a lot of missing informations. Therefore, we actually have to keep in hands a list of informations/paper that we need in able to speed up the paper process. Though there were  a lot of questions and text, but with the help from each other and with all of the materials that we have we were able to get though the process.

If I could change one thing about the bureaucratic process that my partner and I flow charted, I think the both of us will put more information to make the process less confusing and more reasonable. Even though we included majority of the important information and process, we might have left out little progress that might be useful to some people. Therefore, it's really important to include everything we have in the chart to make sure we are helping others 100%.

I do not believe that the system is complicated at all, in my opinion, we the people are making the system complicated and not the system it selve. Some of the part might be complicated due to many inconveniences and because people might have abused the system in the pass. However, it it not the big reason why it' seem complicated. It's because we are not putting enough time to read and find the right way to get though the process without delay.

Lobbying blog #3: Get your bike paths on!

Based on some of the changes that have been approaching to trafficking and traffic related, there are some good news about my lobbying topic. I'm excited to say that this is a good year to promote and talks about bike paths Philadelphia! It is important to know that Philadelphia bikers are being supported and have their rights to bike safe.

Screen shot 2011-11-22 at 5.12.34 PM

On November 3, 2011, Philadelphia Councilman Bill Greenlee has becoming active with Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia as well as being able to help bikers spoke their minds. Mr. Greenlee had been able to answer questions for the Bicycle of Great Philadelphia as well as the citizens regarding to biking issues in the city as well as state. Many of the questions are relating to laws regarding to bikers violation, safety and as well as getting funding for more bike path in and out of the city.
One of the key questions was, "Would you support the installation of innovative infrastructure such as buffered bike lanes, like those on Spruce and Pine, on a select number of streets to create a citywide bicycle network that is safe and inviting to ride for those from age 8 to 80?." This question hit the key point on my lobbying topic for paths as well as getting involve with brighter ways to get though traffics using different type of vehicles and bikes. Greenlee also mentioned that, " I support bike lanes when they are safe and where communities are directly involved in the process. I believe there are streets where bike lanes are not safe for bikers, pedestrians and drivers."

As I mentioned in the second blog as well as the issue above, Mayor Nutter was also a part of the Bicycling Questionnaire, Mayor Nutter also responded, "I support Bike Share. We have explored this issue, and I very mindful of initial or start-up costs and would be interested in proposals that minimize City costs." Also Mayor Nutter had mention to convince the Streets Commissioner about staffing priorities.(http://blog.bicyclecoalition.org/search/label/mayor_2011)

Not only that council chairs are getting involve in the issue, many Philadelphians as well as biker hearts are fighting for their rights as well as protesting for bills and laws to pass. Bikers also participate in many events including, "Philly Naked Bike Rides," as well as other events to support their strong press for what they love and their passion for biking.
According to my lobbying topic, there are no big legislative argued. However, Mayor and many city council as well as traffic court are aware and is supportive of the situation and keep it moving. With the help of the people as well as chairs men,  it will take on the point and keep changing.

How to make Oyakodon

1 lb Free Range chicken (cut into bite size pieces)
1 1/2 tbsp onion flakes

1 2/3 cups dashi soup stock

7 Tbsp soy sauce

4 Tbsp mirin

3 Tbsp all natural sugar

4 Organic eggs (beat)

5 cups Botan Calrose Rice

2. Add in soy sauce, sugar and mirin. Stir.

4. Add in onion flakes and let sit for another 5 minutes.

5. Add eggs into the skillet.

6. Bring to a boil.

7. Lower heat and cover with a lid for 1-3 minutes.

8. Remove from heat and serve over steamed rice.

9. Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Analysis:

From the two part meal, out of 15 ingredients, 10 weren't processed. (Rice, rice vinegar,  chicken, sugar, eggs, sesame seeds, seaweed, cucumbers, sesame oil, and onion flakes) So about 67% of our total meal was whole foods.

For the Kimpab the meal consisted of mostly oils, complex sugars, protein.

For the Oyakodon the meal consisted of protein, complex sugars, simple sugars, protein and oils.

Complex sugar-Complex sugars are tecnically carbs. Carbs regulate the sugar in your blood so all cells get the appropriate amount of energy, help foster growth of good bacteria in your intestines, help the body to absorb calcium, regulate blood pressure and give your body energy that it burns off slowly rather than right away.

Simple sugar-Simple sugars are quickly broken down by your body to give you quick energy. They don't last very long but they give you energy to do what you need to. It goes straight into your bloodstream.

Protein-Proteins build and repair body tissue, produce enzymes and hormones, regulated natural bodily functions, helps the immune system and helps to produce stored energy to increase stamina. Different types of proteins go different places and perform different functions.

Oil-Oils insulate under skin from the cold and heat, support organs and nerve fibers and oils take part of every cell membrane in your body.

So our body will be able to maintain normal bodily processes while retaining some of the energy for later use. While this isn't a meal to eat right before an important athletic event, for a day out walking this should be the thing. This meal wouldn't hurt you right away. It has most of the food groups as well as essential bodily nutrients. For a sedentary lifestyle this meal is probably acceptable. More proteins are needed to truly make this a good meal. This meal does tend to have a lot of simple sugars in it so you could develop diabetes or have your insulin have issues.

Most of our ingredients came from America in areas that specialize in asian cuisine. The specific state could be anymore but in our case probably in small asian shops here in PA. (H-Mart usually has pretty local ingredients.) So I'm thinking our furthest ingredient was probably the seaweed, chicken, or botan calrose rice with an estimated 30-50 miles traveled. The grown ingredients were not grown with pesticides but most likely used fertilizer. The processed foods, rice vinegar for example, are probably damaging to the environment from constantly having to grow and be stripped of its product. It's being reused often without break.

Kimpab = $30.29

Oyakodon = $37.48

While initially this is more expensive than fast food factor in that it was made for 10+ people which brings the prices down to $3.03 and $3.74 per person. This is the price of a dollar menu meal at mcdonalds and cheaper than a value meal. AND it's much healthier. H-mart and it's farming partners made the money off our meal. H-mart is the largest corporation involved in our food.

There were only two processes followed for all of our foods.

Whole foods:

1. Animal/earth

2. Harvested

3. Truck

4. Cleaned (at H-mart)

5. Onto H-Mart shelves

Processed:

1. Animal/earth

2. chemically pimped out

3. harvested

4. Truck (to factory)

5. Additives are added/final products are made

6. truck to H-mart

7. onto shelves

Honestly had we grown these items ourselves the only missing steps would be steps 3 and 5 for whole foods and steps 2,4,6,7 for processed foods, H-mart is pretty awesome like that.

 Ayanna Robinson's reflection/Food rule

If it weren't for this unit I would have known that I have very little say in the way my food is produced but I wouldn't know why. Because of this unit I learned just how screwed the organic vs. processed food debate is. As a consumer, I should have the right to know what I'm paying for but through Food Inc. I learned how important it is to keep the consumer in the dark so the producer can sell the cheapest things for the biggest profit.

A good starting change would be for me to try and put more of my money into small farms. These are the cleanest producers with minimal use of middle men. Because small farms don’t use the middle man I know my money is going straight into my product. What I buy is actually what I paid for. Also, I help myself by buying from small farms because the food is sure to be more organic than what the FDA lets pass for organic in Wal-Mart.

But I also learned its not just about what you eat. Moderation in what you eat can affect you just as much. A person who eats junk in moderation might not get diabetes while someone who gorges on healthy food does. And even then your genetics might simply be working against you. Healthy diets are affected by more than just food!

Although hard at first, these changes would be in the best interest of all people. If we start creating healthy habits earlier, generations of kids can grow up with healthy appetites. If we worked hard enough, there could one day be a generation of kids for which diabetes is a rare occurence. For me as an individual im not entirely willing to make the change, but for the community as a whole I would love to. After learning all the secrets the food industry has hidden from its customers im less likely to willingly stick to eating its food.

One of the biggest thing that I learned from this unit was that about all of the food Incorporation and how the food industry really affect the economy. However, that is not one of the main thing I notice about the chapter, I also notice a lot of important facts that the general public should acknowledge. As simple as it sound, its actually more than just any food that you can easily purchase at the market or where else. These foods are going through a system that is almost like a cover up for the truth and as consumers we are not taking our time to investigate in these issues. I would like the general public to realizes all of the issues that are running in the food industry and tries to change it before it is too late. Some of the steps that I personally can do to address this issues is by talking about it at home and starting it out with my parents and friends. It might be a small change that we can do one by one, but the small changes might be able to help us spread the words and get people to listen and start getting involve with consuming in organic foods as as well as growing their own instead of spending a small amount of money to ruin the human health.

I also enjoyed reading the facts about the new way to grow potatoes as well as how they are being describes more of a computer than just a plant.

This chapter has changed my view on the food industry more than ever before. Also it has struck to me that there are so many ways that I can go with my diet without having to conflict with all of the unhealthy eating habits. I might return to being a vegetarian once again.

Donna Survillo 's reflection/Food rule

This unit definitely helped me to have a better understanding of how the food industry works and what goes on behind the scenes of the supermarkets and their providers. In the food system, I’m a consumer and being a part of a secretive food society isn’t fair to not only myself, but to many others as well. The largest problem that we have with the food industry is that so much stuff, aside from the million and one things that are listed in the ingredients, is put into our food without us knowing; so many things are hidden from us. The food industry is using products that are cheaper and more convenient to obtain. They’re processing food to make it appear more edible than waiting for it to grow naturally that way. For example, in the movie Food Inc. we learned how farmers would basically drug their chickens with steroids to fatten and grow larger a lot quicker than they normally would. Compared to a “normal” chicken, the modified chickens are about 2-3 times larger.

A few food changes that I could make are to buy organic food and free-range meats. The only problem with organic food, as we learned, is that it can be extremely pricey and it’s not really affordable, which isn’t fair. People shouldn’t have to spend a fortune on healthy food for their selves and their families. But since they do, the majority of America is overweight due to the cheaper, unhealthier food options that are provided for us. So, until I’m working or until the food industry decides they wanna let us buy healthy food for a cheaper price, I’m not AS willing to make the change as I should be.

The Lacey’s law is a bill that was passed after a death of a young driver in Pennsylvania. This is also not the first time that a young driver lost their life for being reckless and unsafe. This is one of my concerns since I am also in the same category as these teens, in my best interest this law struck out to be because it will give me a chance to acknowledge a law that will be useful for me now as well as in the future.

After finalizing my law as well as getting background researches and timeline, it’s was in my best interest to create a prezi in a modern style to present the information I’ve gathered. I decided to present the law in this perspective because not only that it’s professional and organized. It’s a fun way for other teenagers to view it in a modern style that will grab their attention.

However, during the process of creating the presentation, I’ve come across a lot on false information as well as non-useful websites. But I was able to find a lot of information that I needed. Also the creating process was fun and not as complicated as it seem. If I were to present this project again I would expand my presentation and add more information and challenges on my prezi because it was one of the fun and easy process in this project.

From all of the research and investigation, it shows that any small ideas or even an event can bring up to an idea for a bill. It’s not complicated or big to bring out an idea for a bill and any idea can become a bill. However, from a bill it’s harder to turn a bill into a law that it is for have an idea form as a bill. There are more and just signing a bill to make it a law. The process of having a bill to turn into a law was harder than being told. To make a law it might take a lifetime to accomplish it. However, it’s always useful and a good idea to have laws.

SCOTUS Case: Florence V. Board

Posted by Uyen Nguyen in American Government - Laufenberg on Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 9:17 am
Constitutional Question: The case of Florence V. Board of Chosen Freeholders of the Country of Burlington was followed with a question from the Supreme Court, the question is “Does the Constitution permit the government to strip search every person admitted to a jail, even if there is no reasonable basis to suspect that the person has hidden weapons or contraband?” In another word, does the Constitution have permission to violate the fourth amendment to follow security order and to investigate minor Crimes.

Facts of the Case: A citizen named Albert Florence from the state of New Jersey was arrested on a bench warrant from Essex County. Florence was charged from the arrested for non-indictable offense and not capable to pay a fine. However, Florence argued for his rights and protested the validity of the warrant due to the fact that he had paid the fine. However, after his arrested and detention, the charge was, in fact already been dismissed.

During the arrest, Florence was stripped and search as subjected to a visual body cavity search during his arrival at the Burlington County Jail. From the time of his arrest he was being consume to visual body cavity search and after six days upon his transfer from Burlington County to Essex Country Correctional Facility. But soon after, the charge against him was dismissed and Florence was released.

However, Florence decided to bring a civil rights lawsuit to the United State District Court and to the District of New Jersey for claiming the right to his privacy and the rights of all persons in the class of alleged minor offenders of consuming in the Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution.  Also the Constitution were violated the Fourth Amendment by strip and search a visual body cavity searches for a minor arrest. This District Court agreed to Florence request and his claim to the charge.

Summary of the Arguments before the SCOTUS: The Court pointed out the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1979, which stated “Inmates do not have the right of privacy in prison that is guaranteed to ordinary citizens.” This is to protect the process from unreasonable violations to any citizen’s privacy. The Court decided to applied one of the cased called “Bell v. Wolfish,” which were also involved visual body cavity searches for being arrestees including charged with a minor offense and was striped and search.

The Court decided to apply the rule of the Third Circuit panel that was persuaded by the recent Eleventh and Ninth Circuit that ruled balancing the jails’ security concerns. These circuits are –

(1) The detection of smuggling weapons, contraband and drugs into the facility.

 (2) The identification of gang members by observation of their tattoos.

(3) The prevention of disease, particularly MRSA, against the privacy interest of the arrestees, a blanket policy of strip searching and subjecting all arrestees to visual body cavity searches, irrespective of any particularized suspicion, does not contravene the Fourth Amendment.

Prediction: Since the Supreme court had involved in a similar case and was pass with the Bell v. Wolfish, this case probably will be done with more of a complex explanation by the judges and the court. However, since this case is being reenact, Florence V. Board will not be abandon by lawyers because the Fourth Amendment was violated for Florence, which also was prohibited in the Three Circuits.

Lobbying for more bike paths in Philadelphia

Posted by Uyen Nguyen in American Government - Laufenberg on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at 9:29 pm
The Philadelphians are starting to be come more considerate about their environment and resources, but more importantly their budgeting when it comes to spending on recourses and the affect it has to their environment.  One of they thing that not only Philadelphians but also a lot of citizens are starting to invest in are bikes. More and more of our bikers are starting to show up on every street of Philadelphia, these vehicles can be found almost every corner in Philly including the very busy street. Bikers also shared their most fond and devote feelings they have for their bikes.Philadelphians are really passionate about biking and even the drivers are really supportive about bikes in City. However, the passion and the love for the vehicles still does not grand them from being a part of the city. Many of our biker lovers are still requesting for more bike lanes. It is important that our city councils will be notify and acknowledge the rights that Philadelphia should have more bike lanes in and out of the City.

However, Philadelphia City Council introduced two bills that will pass regarding to city bikers and other bikers in Philadelphia. (Click here for more information)
The Regulations for bicycles in Philadelphia are a bit stricter than the laws of the State.

By this saying, it's proving that bikes are legal and that it can be on duty at all times. However, in able to ride bikes around without violating any rules, you must know the PA. Law and Philly retraction.

The Pennsylvania laws are stating that bikes are consider as a vehicle and will be generalizes with all traffic rules. There are penalties for bikers as well as for drivers on any street of PA./Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Bike laws

This law will help defense my lobbying cause, since bikers have to follow the same rule as any other vehicle and they are consider as a vehicle. It is not fare that bikers do not have there on lanes on any street and at any part of the city/state. Since they have to follow the same law they should have the same respect and rights. Bikes are considered as a vehicle so they are not illegal and therefore they should also have the own parking/place to stores their vehicle in the city!

Uyen Nguyen Statement Q4"

Posted by Uyen Nguyen in Advanced Art - Hull on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at 10:57 pm

Uyen Nguyen
Quarter 4 Artist Statement

For this quarter, we were assigned to create couples of  different projects, create a sculpture, take 200 photos, modify 4 photos, recreate a famous painting, sketch a bicycle three times in different ways, and draw an outside scene from observation. In my opinion all of the topics above seem really interesting and cool to create. However, along the way I ran into some trouble and I personally felt like it was really challenging for me.
For the first project I created a sculpture of a lamp made out of Popsicle sticks and plastic bottles. So far this was one of the most interesting project that I have made. I really enjoy building art and ex-specially something that I can actually use everyday. Another project that I enjoy working on was taking 200 photos and modify 4 photos of my choice. Since I love photography and always carry my “DSLR” around at all time it was not a problem for me to capture 200 pictures. However, one of the harder task was to select photos and edit them using all different kind of programs on the Macbook, including Photoshop, iPhoto and more. After we are completed with electronics and hand down projects, we moved on into more of drawing and painting unit.
For the second half of the quarter I created different drawing of a bike-cycle including lines, negative space and shading of the bike. The biggest challenge for this assignment was to do the shading because the bike was station close to the window so the reflection of the light changes at all time. Also it was far for a view distance so I’ve made a few errors along the way. Also it was really challenging to draw the bike over all because there were a lot of details to go into with the bike work. I also enough working on the drawing of nature because it’s really beautiful outdoor and there were a lot of objects I could select from.
Over all, I really enjoy all of the assignment that was giving this quarter and proud of the art work I’ve created. Although I may have not been using enough time on some of my art piece.

Blog #2

Thumb piano produced sound by the vibrations of the metal when it’s being pressed. The sound than travels through the box and produce  a sound. When pressing down on the metal piece, the longer the piece vibrate the sound will travel for a longer period of time. The piano can be tune by changing the length of the metal piece. By undoing the bar that holds the metal, the metal pieces can be move around and changes it tune. I will be using different sized of woods and make a wooden box with a circle whole in the middle. I will then add about a dozen of metal piece that can be found in a rake or something close to it for the piano’s keys. Also a wooden bar to hold the metal together and a screws that can be move around for tuning.

When talking about music and instrument, I have the biggest heart for piano. Since piano is one of the instrument that I’ve learned to play I have always want to get better at it. My wish was being able to create my own piano that I can bring along with me and play songs. I did some research and found an interesting instrument call a Thumb piano that can be easily build right at home. The instrument included a box that can be build in many different sizes along with different sized metal pieces that are being held down by a stick. The instrument will produce sound when pressing down on the metal pieces then releasing it. Since the metal is being pressed down in able to produce sound, the metal piece is causing a sharp sound. Also the box is to is to so the metal please can bounce back and make the sound travel. The sound can be tune by how long our short the metal piece might be and how hard a piece of wood is pressing against it.

Joan Miro (Uyen Nguyen)

Posted by Uyen Nguyen in Advanced Art - Hull on Friday, April 8, 2011 at 8:41 pm
I chose Joan Miro's art work because his style is different, but it bring out the unique side of the artist. Joan Miro art work is passionate and really abstracted, however it is classy at the same time. I decided to use one of his painting calles "Rooster" as an inspiration because this painting is really simple but at the same time, it created an elution feeling for the viewer. My piece of work is base on this style of coloring and abstract.

Artist Statement, Quater 2, Uyen Nguyen

Posted by Uyen Nguyen in Advanced Art - Hull on Thursday, January 13, 2011 at 8:15 pm

“Art is something unique for yourself to create and not for others to judge. Art has the ability to enrich each individual.” For our second quarter project, we were assigned to create a piece of artwork of our choice. There were no limits or boundries in which you may or may not create, or more like your own inspiration.

I was inspired to create different images and artwork by using material that was around me to begin. My first piece of artwork was a drawing inspired by a friend of mine who dream of being a theater performances, and the art and theater itself. This piece of artwork is a remodel of the famous “Comedy Tragedy masks” piece. However, it was only a remodel of the comedy side of the mask, which was present with a sketch using #2 pencil and sketch paper.

Pencil and paper are not very comforting for me. Another big piece of my project was dealing with different type of paint, and using canvas to present the beauty of the artwork. This part of the picture was inspired by my dream. I was told by many people to “capture and accomplish ” my dream. In this painting, I selected an image of Ojibwe cultural dream catcher as my main object to resemble my inspiration and added textures, colors, and different details that also describe my personality and give the artwork more beauty.

By using the leftover paints from my first canvas, I decided to create my second canvas with something less inspirational and more enjoyable. I painted a picture of a flower surrounding with colors to explain the beauty of art, the beauty of life, and all of the colorful things around it. It was also one of the pleasant and relaxing projects I’ve ever worked on.

Uyen Nguyen (Recyclable Camera)

Posted by Uyen Nguyen in Advanced Art - Hull on Friday, November 12, 2010 at 12:06 pm
“Art is something unique for yourself to create and not for others to judge. Art has the ability to enrich each individual.” As a high school student, my definition of art is more than just a painting or a drawing. Art is an outlet for my feelings and emotions, it’s one of the ways I can express myself without communicating with others. Art class is one of the classes that I can escape from my in school, and it also motivates me to express myself as well as show my reactivities. I was really eager to find out all the projects we are going to get involve with in the unit.

We started our unit by connecting the environment with art. Aurora Robson with her most recent work on using recycling material inspired our teacher Mrs. Hull to come up with our unit project on using recycling objects and create our own art pieces. Aurora Robson created a sculptured out of melted bottle caps. Her inspiration was not only from using recycling product to create her art piece. But it was also because it was one of her biggest nightmares; therefore using bottle caps to create the sculptured was an outlet to show her feeling and emotion on all the negatives affect to the environment when people are abusing the environment by not recycling right.

When the project was first given to us, I was blown away by Aurora Robson’s project and was so thrilled with trying to make a different piece of art from the same material. However, I was having lunch one day and realized right on the table, there’s a soda can sitting right next to a cardboard box laying on the table. I started to realize that there are more recyclable products I can relate to in this project. Along with seeing recyclable object lying on the table, right next to it what I call my passion or in another word my camera that I’d carry with me everyday. I decided to collaborate my motivation and passion together and create something new something that could attach to me as well as describing who I am.

I’ve come to a conclusion to rebuild another version of my camera, but with recycle products. For this project I used a box that was found on the table the day I had lunch to resemble the body of the camera. For the camera lens it was replaced with cans that was also found at the lunch table, which someone decided to not recycle it. Also a long the progress of building this camera, I found a couple of plastics item I could use as extra attachment on the camera. This piece of camera was put together by masking tapes because I wanted to stay in the area of using all recyclable materials or can be use to recycle. With the brand new camera I can finally captures this experience as well as my new outlet with the environment around me when people start to take role in recycling.
