Artist Statement:

For this quarters art benchmark, I decided to make posters for Harry Potter and the deathly Hallows and Inception. At first, I only did the Deathly Hallows symbol. Harry potter, I've been a fan of since the very  beginning. Out of all the books, the part about the Deathly Hallows was my favorite. The story behind it was so amazing, and I always thought the actual icon/symbol was really cool looking. After seeing the movie, I go the idea to do the art work and have the trees, and the moon and sun inside the symbol. The quote I wanted to incorporate somehow, so I though that if I made it go along the outer rim of the drawing it would look nice. The font was probably the most difficult thing for me to do, since my handwriting to begin with isn't the best. Also, I had some trouble with blending the colors together. Since I've only done that one in my 8th grade art class, it turned out better then I thought it was going to. I'm pleased with the final result of the drawing. I wish, I could of made it all even, because the triangle is lopsided in some places, but people that have seen it said they couldn't tell. The second picture was a line from the movie Inception, it's one of my favorite movies. I took the riddle from the movie that Cobb and Mal used to say together. it goes like "You're waiting for a train, a train that will take you far away. You know where you hope this train will take you, but you can't be sure...but it doesn't matter, because we'll be together. I thought that doing word art would be cooler. I added a train and all of the main charterers totems at the bottom. I also thought that if I did word art, it would help me improve my  handwriting.

My partner and I research and took on the task of apply for welfare. We discovered that there are multiple steps that one can take. There is the option to apply separately apply for cash benefits, food stamps, and medical assistance or all together.

Depending on if one wants all the benefits there are different processes but everyone must fill out an application and mail or bring it to their local county assistance office. From there a face-to-face interview may occur, a Mutual Responsibility Form will be filled out (if granted cash and medical assistance) and electronic transferring will begin.

The application was long and difficult. It requirement extensive information about the person applying for welfare, each other their family members, significant other, jobs, education, housing, and more. At times it seemed repetitive. It made me wonder how difficult it might be for someone who really is in need that might not have a phone, house, proper identification, etc.

One thing about the welfare system I wish could be changed is some of the people that take part in the system. There are people that certainly do abuse the system. For example, using cash benefits for drugs or other unnecessary things. I cannot think of a proper way to assess but there should be a back up for people that participate in cash benefits especially. This is one of the reasons why the system has become so complicated; there are so many people that apply that could potentially abuse the system. In addition, there are too many people involved such as, those that are in need, the government, the civilians that contribute to those in need, etc.

It was an interesting experience applying for welfare. I realized how hard it could be for one in need to get help. The research I did also put welfare into perspective for me.  I’m happy to have had this experience.

A FAFSA completion workshop will be held here at SLA on January 19 at 6pm.  Sharon Scott and Nichole Moore, Assistant Directors, Student Financial Services, University of Pennsylvania will assist parents in completing the FAFSA application.  Students and parents must bring the following items:

Parent and student social security numbers

Parent and/or student Alien Registration Number (if applicable)

Parent and student 2009 0r 2010 W-2 Forms

Parent and Student 1040 Federal Income Tax Return for 2009 or 2010

Copies of untaxed income for 2010 (i.e. amount of any unemployment, welfare benefits or social benefits received)

For my second quarter art project I did what I did naturally, draw. I love to sketch and especially sketch anime characters. Lately I've been really nerdy watching all my old cartoons from when I was younger and it gave me the inspiration to try drawing like the professionals. These pictures aren't very creative but I chose to do this type of assignment to test my skills as an artist. The pictures show something about myself as well. Each one is my favorite character from a specific show. The progress of my artwork is each individual picture. I found that it would simpler, instead of taking picture line by line, to take each picture and make a collage.
