Chelsea Ann Smith Capstone

Posted by Chelsea Smith in Capstone - Siswick on Thursday, May 16, 2013 at 3:00 pm
For my project I focused on giving back to my SLA community. SLA has given me so much and I have also lived my life by giving back. I based my Capstone off the things I learned while being a part of City Year: City Heroes Program. For my project, I painted different pieces of art work around the school to encourage positive attitudes and to beautify the school. Doing this helps students to have better attitudes and to feel more part of a community that cares. There is three final products that are located around the school. For these pieces I led groups of students in prepping and painting. Through this project I learned more time management skills and got to put my leadership skills to the test to help make the school a prettier place to be. This project also helped me to leave a permanent imprint of me and my beliefs on the school community.

I used this website to help me find prices of supplies that I am going to need during my event. I also used it to get ideas of other materials I am going to need during the event. This helps give me an idea of things to get and the amount of money I need to have prepared before I walk into the store. This helps me be a smart shopper.

I used Lowe’s website to help me find prices of supplies that I know I am going to need during my event. I used two different sites so I was able to compare prices and buy supplies from the cheaper of the two stores, this helped so I was able to spend my money wisely and stay on my budget.

I used this site to help me get some basic art ideas that I can add into my murals that I am going to paint. This site talked about different artist and their range of styles. This helped give me different ideas to take when approaching cool art to put on the walls here at SLA.

Jonas, P. (2013, Feb 1). Interview by C.A Smtih [Personal Interview]., SLA.

For this project, I talked to Pearl Jonas about how she took part in past service projects through City Year Greater Philadelphia. She worked on the Corps team for the Young Hero Program in 2008-2009. I was able to ask her questions about her experience in planning the events and ask her for advice in planning my event.

City Year is a program that I was a part of for four years. Every skill that I am using in this project, I have learned through City Year and the time I spent in their program. They have helped me gain and sharpen these skills in a way that now I am able to do my own type of service project on my own. City Year is my main resource of instruction when it has come to planning and preparing for this event.

Boddy-Evans, M. (n.d.). How to paint a wall mural . Retrieved from http://kiwaniskids.org/en/KKids/Serve/Planning_a_service_project.aspx

This site talked a lot about different ways to paint a mutual on a wall. It gave me ideas and suggestions of ways to approach this task. This is important because I have to make sure the sketches I put on the walls are good enough to be painted in and for people at SLA to take serious in a beautification sense.

Pegan, C. (2013, Jan 20). Interview by C.A Smtih [Personal Interview]., SLA.

Cheyenne is a good friend of mine, who has great artistic talent. She is going to help me create the sketches of the murals to be painted on the walls. We have sat down and talked about what these sketches should look like and what direction I am heading in by the theme of the sketches.

Utzig, M. (2013, Jan 20). Interview by C.A Smtih [Personal Interview]., SLA.

Marley is one of my best friends who has great doodling and lettering styles. Along with a mix of small murals, I am also going to be putting up a few quotes, these quotes are going to be written in different types of bubble letters. This is where Marley comes in, she is going to help me design the font and style of this quotes.

This site has given me pointers and ideas about how to go about planning my service event. This site is a guide to planning service events. This site has touched on things that had slipped my mind and has also retouched on some things that I already knew. By the site doing this, I was able to recognize what things were super important to making this event a success.

Dig Vid Crew. (2013, Feb). Interview by C.A Smtih [Personal Interview]., SLA.

On the day of my service project, I am going to have a few Dig Vid students come out and film the event. They are helping me create a few minute video that is going to document the event. This is going to capture the service taking place. I am going to use this video during my presentation to show the viewers a little bit of the actual service project happening.

Sugar Skull

Posted by Chelsea Smith in Art Advanced - Hull on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at 9:14 am
A sugar skull is a symbol that is used to help celebrate the Day of the Dead which is a Mexican holiday. A sugar skull is a skull that is painted a certain way, its covered in designs and normally is mainly black and white. Sugar skulls are suppose to be very detailed and have some color. Red is a commonly used color.

I came up with the design for my sugar skull by looking online at many different mask designs to use for reference. My mask has bits and pieces of other masks that I saw with my own personal touch. Many things in this mask were painted in the moment, I thought they would look cool so I tried it out and in the end the mask kind of all flows together.

To start, we had to learn about what sugar skulls were and spent time looking them up and practicing drawing them. After that, we learned how to plaster masks and saw a demo. This demo lead right into the making of the masks, the mask I made is of Wynn's face. After the plastered mask is dry, the painting begun. I started by getting all the paint I needed to use and then put on the first coat of paint. I had to let it dry before I put more paint on. The second coat I put on was the white paint, I went back and put details on the mask and also outlined the designs I made in color. This helped the mask pop and brought the mask together. When I added the white paint and designs is when my mask started to look a sugar skull. Even though I was done, I still continued to go back and add more details the following class period to make the white paint looked better and to fix any errors I hadn't caught earlier.I think the different layers of colors and designs really makes the mask pop.

Slang, Blog #5, Eres la Hosita

Posted by Chelsea Smith in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at 9:42 am

the slang of another country.

¿Habla mucho *argot con tu amigos?

¿Que argot en argentina?

¿Que Comica palabras adolescente habla?

¿Tu habla mucho argot?

¿*Argot es normal?

*lenguaje de informal (Different way of saying slang, using this more people understood my questions.)

What are you looking forward to about this conversation?
I am looking forward to learning some slang in spanish. I don't know any or if its really different from english slang. It should be fun!
What are you nervous about?
I am not really nervous, this is going to be my 5th conversation, I feel like I got this now!

Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?
I spoke to many different people. The reason for this is because the first couple people I spoke with didn't understand what I was asking, but I am not really sure why. Also many people were very touchy with this topic. I am unsure why people were so touchy, I hope I didn't offend them. This was very weird to me.

What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?
I learned many different ways to say "slang." Using different versions of saying slang can cause you to get different types of reactions, some better then others. I was really surprised. I also learned about eres la hosita, which means thats awesome, but can be used positively or negatively. It use to mean something religious but now its used used to describe something.

How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?
It helped me learn a little about slang but it also showed me how people react to different questions and topics. I got the feel that this topic could of been touchy for some people in these spanish speaking countries where its not touchy at all in America.

What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?
I kept talking to people until I learned some type of form of slang, This included talking to four people, but I didn't give up. I really wanted to learn something.

What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)
I need to figure out better ways to phrase things. Many of the people didn't understand how I was wording things and wasn't use to the form of spanish I was using. For one the word Argot meaning slang in spanish confused almost everyone and no know knew it. This is what word reference told me but I guess people don't really use that word.

Blog #4 - Música!

Posted by Chelsea Smith in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at 11:28 am

¿Te gusta musica?

¿Que es musica favorita?

¿Que es popular musica en Mexico?

¿Que es favorita concerta?

¿Música es muy importante en tu vida?

What are you looking forward to about this conversation?

I want to learn about the music they listen to and see if its anything like what I listen to. I know some places listen to American music that would be cool to find out to!

What are you nervous about?

I not really nervous, I am more excited!

Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?
I talked to a boy names Vann from Mexico, I chose him just randomly because I thought it might be cool to talk to someone from a different country but not a country to far away to compare music differences.

What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?
I learned that he likes all different types of music and has been to a few concerts. He is a very music friendly person. He is mainly into like house and techno type music.

How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?
I learned about music in a spanish speaking country and had a really good conversation. I enjoyed it.

What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?
I learned about music and the conversation was the longest one I have had yet and it actually flowed well!

What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)
I need to figure out a better way to end the conversation without cutting it right off with a bye.

Fail Attempt But Interesting Outcome

Posted by Chelsea Smith in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at 4:08 pm
What does sports look like in Brazil?

¿Qué déportes important en Brazil?

¿Qué deportes en muy grande en Brazil?

¿Haces ves fútbol?

¿Deportes es mucho importante en Brazil o arte es muy importante?

¿Deportes en las escuela?

What are you looking forward to about this conversation?
I really want to learn about other countries and their views on sports!

What are you nervous about?
I am not really nervous, I tried to have this conversation before and it didn't work. I just hope I can find someone to talk to me on LiveMocha.

Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?
I spoke with a boy from Brazil. I figured this would be a good country to find out about.
What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?
I learned that he is very lazy. Now that I am done the conversation I understand that he likes to use a lot of slang and teen talk when talking. This is why I was so confused.
How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?
This didn't help me with my goal, like at all. But it did give me a new idea for my next round for a conversation. It allowed me to be exposed to slang in spanish, which is new to me.
What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?
I continued to ask questions about sports and followed it with follow up questions to try and understand and get some answers.
What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)
I need to pick better people. It always seems like the people that I wind up talking to all suck. lol. I would also try to understand things better, and ignore a word or two if it confuses me. Try to get the general feel for what my partner is saying instead.

Deportes en Mexico

Posted by Chelsea Smith in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Sunday, April 29, 2012 at 12:36 pm
What does sports look like in Mexico?

¿Qué déportes important en Mexico?

¿Haces deportes?

¿Qué deportes en muy grande en Mexico?

¿Haces ves fútbol?

¿Deportes es mucho importante en Mexico o arte es muy importante?

¿Deportes en las escuela?

What are you looking forward to about this conversation?
I am looking forward to learning about the sports in Spain. I know Soccer is big but I am curious to see what else is big.

What are you nervous about?
I am kind of nervous to talk to someone that I don't know over the internet.

  • Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?
I spoke to some boy in Mexico. I choses him because he was the only one out of like 6 people that actually wrote me back.
  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?
    He plays tennis.

  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?
I didn't know they played tennis in Mexico. He didn't really answer my questions. He was confused. Was my spanish not good enough?

  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?
I learned a little bit about some sport stuff. It also wasn't to bad talking to someone I didn't know that lived in a different country.

  • What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)
I said "¿Qué deportes en muy grande en Mexico?" I meant es not en so I fixed it by doing the * and maybe thats why he was confused and signed off?

Conversation Trial 1

Posted by Chelsea Smith in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Sunday, April 22, 2012 at 10:08 pm
  • Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?

Kim Cayamcela from SLA. She is spanish and is a native speaker and also a close friend of mine so I wasn't too nervous.
  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

We talked about our weekends and that she is really great at spanish, I knew she was but we never talked in spanish before.

  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

I was able to continue the conversation. She helped me with that and I was able to figure out what words to say to answer her questions and respond.

  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

I kept talking in the conversation, I was able to figure out what to say and keep it going!

  • What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)e

My spelling really held me back, I kept messing up and having to * and re type to word. I might be able to speak it in conversation but ichating it is helping because I am worrying about my spelling as well as my goals.

Evolution Review

Posted by Chelsea Smith in Physics - Echols on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 12:27 pm
Evolution is all about "survival of the fitness." The organisms that  begin to adapt to their surrounding and change over time are the ones that continue to survive. The ones that don't adapt or change are the ones that die off. Evolution is the reason why change happens, it causes a species to change or else it will be destroyed.

There is no actual research on Evolution it is mostly observations because it is a highly observational science. All the proof stems from seeing evolutionary change over time in these creatures.

Visual Evidence of Evolution

Fossils are the main evidence of The Theory of Evolution because researchers are able to look far back in time and not only see the difference between creatures now and then but also see how they changed over time and figure out why they had to change over time.

Embryology is the study of embryos, and in embryos scientist are able to fine evolutionary change.

The sequences in DNA are all different but in certain species the similarities can be found and certain DNA is changed around depending on the habitat so that the species can survive.

Similarities in the physical aspects of a creature is the most common thing to look at when studying the theory and is in fact how Darwin came up with the theory. This also works with the insides of creatures and how they work and where they are placed.

Probable question topics

The PSSA will most likely ask about natural selection and why these creatures change.

“Survival of the Fittest”

Physical differences.

Why are they physically different?

Pictures below:
In the first two pictures, it is showing the difference in the two fishes. These fishes are highlighting the changes that happened during evolution.

The third picture is a common known picture, and it shows the common belief that monkeys are an early form of humans, and humans came from monkeys.

The fourth picture is showing the evolution of the human skull over time.

The fifth picture is of Charles Darwin, the founder of the theory of evolution.

Chelsea Smith’s Process Paper about Littering Campaign

Posted by Chelsea Smith in English 3 - Pahomov on Thursday, March 29, 2012 at 4:28 pm

For my groups project we created a campaign targeting the problem of littering within the community of SLA. SLA has a huge problem with litter around the school and we really want to see this change. For this campaign we spilt up rolls so we could have many things all supporting the same idea and hit people in ever-possible angle.

My part of this project was to create a pledge that students of SLA could take. This pledge consisted of how students of SLA should be acting and treating their school, for example throwing away their trash and encouraging others to also throw away trash. The pledge was to get people to promise they will try to keep the school clean. After people pledged they signed a large piece of paper that is now hanging in front of class so other students can see that their fellow students are working towards a better and clean school and to also remind the people that did sign it that they should remain true to the pledge they promised to follow.

I also created a twitter account. This account was created to help reach out to the SLA community even more. Many students have twitter and use twitter to stay connected. It is also used as a place to go when they need an escape during class, so why not fill their feed with facts about littering. I followed many students at SLA and also asked students to follow back. On this account students have hash tagged us a few times as well as a teacher. I plan to keep this twitter going and sending tweets out so people know how things in the school are looking.

The most challenging part of this project was trying to discover what exactly would help make this campaign a success. We didn't want to pick just anything, we wanted it to speak to people and make people care and that is why I directly spoke to students here at SLA and also through a common social media site that is highly used during school hours.

Primary:
Louis, Gasnier, dir. Reefer Madness. 1936. Film.
Reefer Madness was a movie put out in 1936. The movie shows the ill effects of marijuana, as an anti marijuana propaganda. The characters are drug dealers through out the movie they are smoking and other characters are smoking. The characters becoming violent including running over people with a car, the characters also change their entire personality, full blown hallucinations like would be seen from taking LSD, and shooting people. The movie ends with the characters dead or insane from smoking marijuana. The last scene is much like a PSA announcement. This movie is a prime example of what people during this time thought about marijuana.

Teen Drug Use PSA. Film. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cg_IgEo_vIU>.
PSA about teens doing drugs from the 1960’s. It is a short 8 minute video about taking drugs and popping pills “why” the students do them and eventually why marijuana is a gate way drug and what it does to you. The PSA talks about how the kids slowly take more and more drugs because they either become addicted or think they can handle the drugs. This video shows the basic stuff that kids are influenced by other kids and that if done once it will be done again so the kids do stuff to be cool or “groovy”. Bad kids influence good kids to take drugs because they also take drugs or they are drug dealers. The video talks about students being “square” which is bad, the main boy in the video drinks to much at a party and ends up doing drugs because he is not thinking.

N.p., n.d. Web. 5 Jan 2012. <http://quotes.liberty-tree.ca/quotes_by/harry j. anslinger>.
These are quotes from Harry J. Anslinger. He was the head of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. With him at the lead they began to arrest people for using drugs. They had little money though to pay for what they needed to do so Harry created a PSA and fought drugs by using scare tactics and alerting the public how dangerous this new drug was and why people should not do it. These quotes are only a few of the racist slurs and lies he has told. He discredited research done on the drug that went against his PSA’s and made sure the world was to afraid to even smoke the drug believing that they would become violent.

"Gore Files." Reefer Madness video. N.p., n.d. Web. 5 Jan 2012. < http://reefermadnessmuseum.org/chap10/Gore.htm
One of Harry J. Anslinger’s Anti-drug propaganda was called the Gore File. In his Gore File stories are told about people on marijuana who have done horrible acts generally rape and murder. Many children and people under the influence of marijuana are said to of stabbed people while under the influence of marijuana. There are also bits about people selling marijuna while not as scary as thinking about someone stabbing you while high this was still effective for parents because this meant anyone could be selling drugs to their children. The quotes are from newspapers with short blurbs of what happened while said person did what they did on marijuana. In fact many people tried to claim insanity because they were on marijuana. the first ten are ture the rest are myths but at the time were considered true at least so said the PSA’s and Gore Files.

Nixon announces war on drugs. News, Film. < http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsrxpVUKUK0>.
June 17, 1972 Nixon announces the War on Drugs. He explains that he will be upping the funding that is going to the Federal Bureau of Narcotics and taking down drugs because in his opinion Drugs are public enemy number one. This is a short video but apparently Nixon wanted to crack down on laws but the only one that was a full federal law was the war on drugs so he took to it. This became his presidential “thing”, he was going to take down drugs and drug users, the people who push drugs and the ones who are corrupted by them. Other presidents have backed the war on drugs but Nixon started it.

Mann, Ron, dir. Grass: History of marijuana. 1999. Film

This is a documentary about the history of marijuana. In the documentary multiple PSA’s and other scare tactics from the government are shown. The film shows both sides of the history, the whole story with facts and historical references. It talks about how the Mexicans from across the border brought the weed into the states. They say that a Mexican who was high went crazy and killed a bunch of people so the El Paso Ordinance 1914. Harry J. Anslinger is introduced as taking down drugs. The whole movie is filled with primary sources mostly videos and pictures from different times. The anti drugs campaign seems to be the one with the most PSA’s.

Rudgley, Richard. "Cannabis." Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Substances. Little, Brown and Company, 1998. Web. 2 Jan 2012. <http://cannabis.net/hist/index.html>.

This source also talks about how the drug was originally grown in one certain location because of the environment it needed, thinking maybe around Central Asia and around Afghanistan area. It isn’t certain because of how widely it has spread and how fast it happened too. This site is also very useful because it talks about the plant and what type it is, for example it is a dioecious plant meaning it can have either the male or the female reproduction system. For cannabis the female systems produce the best. Cannabis was also present during the time of the Silk Road and was commonly traded. Many smoked it because it was believed that it helped release one from their anxiety, which is still a common belief.

"Mexican Weed of Madness." Miami News 25 June 1914, n. pag. Web. 5 Jan. 2012. <http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=QSsuAAAAIBAJ&sjid=-NQFAAAAIBAJ&pg=2976,3549925&dq=marihuana insane&hl=en>.

This newspaper article is from 1914 and talks about the crazy outbreaks smoking marijuana causes a person to have. It highlights one story about one guy that smoked marijuana and then killed a cop and badly injured three other men. He stated that he was crazy and he was put in a strait jacket. They also talk about how smoking marijuana causes a person to lose their mind and they will never became to recover it again after that. The article raised the issue of soldiers in camps smoking marijuana and how it had to be smuggled and was illegal, smoking it caused a headache at first and then caused hallucinations involving seeing things that weren’t there. This newspaper article is helpful because it shows the thought people believed about weed and shows the causes that later down the road helped make marijuana illegal in the United States and Mexico.

Secondary:

Guither, Pete . "Why is Marijuana Illegal? ." Drug WarRant . WordPress , n.d. Web. 2 Jan 2012. <http://www.drugwarrant.com/articles/why-is-marijuana-illegal/>.

This source talks about why exactly marijuana is illegal today and what caused it to get that way. For example it has a lot to do with racism, greed and companies profits, which isn’t what most people think. Most people get the idea that just because its illegal it means it’s bad, which the site also talks about, the level of ignorance. The site also talks about the basic history of marijuana and how it has been legal for most of its usage time, it has only been illegal for 1% of the time the plant has been in use. The site also has a section on the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 which is important because it is obviously not enforced today and there is also a section about the relations that involved the Mexicans and also a section that talks about the prohibition laws in place. This helps learn the facts and how they have changed with the fact that make up the background to give us a good base of understanding.

"Hemp History ." . Hemp House Paia, 1998 . Web. 2 Jan 2012. <http://www.hemphousemaui.com/resources/history.php>.

This source is very important because it helps give a good idea of how things involving marijuana started to become more popular and how things exactly started to spread. This mainly outlines the use of hemp and when people started to learn new ways to use it. This site is a timeline that dates as far back as 8000 BC and goes all the way up unto 1998. This gives a basic idea and helps us be able to map things and understand the large issue and concept of this ongoing problem. The timeline includes facts and events from anything like someone eating a seed to help them stay alive to the word hempe being listed in the dictionary to when it became legal to have hemp farms and to mass grow.

"Marijuana Timeline ." BUSTED America's War on Marijuana. PBS, n.d. Web. 2 Jan 2012. <http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/dope/etc/cron.html>.

The time line starts in the 1600’s talking about the growing of marijuana for hemp up to the 1890s. The 1920’s are when things become interesting as Mexicans who have crossed the border bring over Marijuana as a recreational drug. In the 1930’s drugs are making a rise in America and the fear is rising so in an effort to fight the new drugs the Federal Bureau of Narcotics is created.  The timeline talks about different PSA’s. There is an interesting tidbit from World War two where a program “Hemp For Hope” is program where people will grow hemp so that there is more rope and cloth for the war.

"Ancient Cannabis: Uncovering a 2,700-Year-Old Stash." Discovery News . Discovery Communications, n.d. Web. 2 Jan 2012. <http://dsc.discovery.com/news/slideshows/marijuana-stash.html>.

This source shows pictures with captions and little explanations of the Yanghai Tombs from over 2,700 years ago that contained marijuana in them. The tombs also contained other produces made from hemp. The site also has pictures of seeds and leafs of this 2,700 year old marijuana. This site helps show how far back marijuana could possibly go. The Yanghai people could have been the first people to have marijuana and use it in its many ways or maybe they weren’t. Its not certain if they smoked it or where it was grown or if they even were the ones that put it in the tombs, but it does answer some questions while it raised many more unanswerable questions.

Viegas, Jennifer. "Oldest Marijuana Stash Found ."Discovery News . Discovery Communications, 03 Dec 2008. Web. 2 Jan 2012. <http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2008/12/03/marijuana-stash.html>.

This source continues to talk about the Yanghai Tombs in much more detail. They used the hemp to make clothes and ropes. The site proves that the Yanghai people did indeed smoke the marijuana, but in the tomb and from what we know about the civilization it is unknown how exactly they smoked it. From inspecting it is known that marijuana is a complicated plant and took brains to create. The stuff they smoked was very similar to what we have today but if the stuff that was found was smoked there would be no effect because of the decomposition of the main chemicals including THC. This cite helps me to further understand the oldest dated back marijuana in detail.

"A Brief History of Cannabis ." The UK Cannabis Internet Activist. UKCIA Culture Section, n.d. Web. 2 Jan 2012. <http://www.ukcia.org/culture/history/index.php>.

This source is useful to my project because it talks about how early traditions started, like people sitting around in a circle smoking and meeting in groups of people. Also as far back as 2737 BC marijuana has been used as a medicine, maybe even farther back.  Also the drug was referenced in Homer which helps date it back even more. The site also talked about how it was used as a punishment in an early form, people were made to smoke it until they passed out if they committed a misdeed, but on the flip side it was also encouraged to smoke because it gave lots of energy and made people work better. This site also proves as early as 1378 there were people that wanted cannabis destroyed, it worked but then eventually came back, which happens many more times in history and even to the present day.

Zimmer, Lynn. "Marijuana." Legalize Marijuana . N.p., 21 Oct 2007. Web. 2 Jan 2012. <http://archure.net/liberty/marijuana.html>.

This source is useful because it talks about where the natural habit of marijuana and where it originated from. Cannabis homeland is just north of India and many of the early civilizations had to travel through that area on their way to settling and traveling to find and conquer new land. At this time is when most people found and picked on cannabis. This is most likely the reason that the plant spread so much and is now present and easily found everywhere. Early on the plant was referred to as the Mother of Agricultural Civilization because it had many helpful uses such as making ropes and fabric, medical uses and it contains vitamin B and protein. The writer of this cite is both a former user and a researcher who strongly feels that marijuana should be legal and talks about the many positive things that the plant and drug can be used and was used for. It is also mentioned that the use of the drug causes hallucinations and at a certain balance it can be good and that is what is believed to have started the ideas of many world religions today.

"Interviews ." BUSTED America's War on Marijuana. PBS , 1998 . Web. 2 Jan 2012. <http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/dope/interviews/>.
These are interviews from a PBS documentary called “Busted - America’s War on Marijuana”. Each man interviewed is from a different field of work. The men are on different sides of the issue. Some are fighting for the legalization of marijuana and because they are professionals in their field they are able to give good sturdy reasons and data to support their ideas. Reading the interviews gives you two strong sides of an argument. The men’s professions, which range from Teachers to Police officers, really add to the knowledge and give you different perspectives of marijuana besides just a full on supporter of marijuana or a person who is totally against it.

"Cannabis (drug)." Wikipedia. Wikimedia Foundation, 03 Dec. 2012. Web. 12 Mar. 2012. <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabis_(drug)>.
This is a Wikipedia article about Cannabis. This is a good page for the basic information on marijuana and is not biased stating only the facts of what is going on in this history and current affairs of marijuana. The Wikipedia page also talks about the chemicals in marijuana and their effects that make up marijuana as a drug. It is important to know this stuff because not many people think about the types of stuff marijuana is made of like THC and what it does to you exactly. This page gives all the basics about the classifications and different types of marijuana.

"Cal Biz Lit." : Just Say No! To Headless Class Actions. Cal Biz Lit, 28 Apr. 2011. Web. 12 Mar. 2012. <http://www.calbizlit.com/cal_biz_lit/2011/04/just-say-no-to-headless-class-actions.html>.
This article is about employers not accepting employees who have a prison record. The important part of the article is that a majority of the people who had a prison record had it because of marijuana related crimes. The people then sued Starbucks but it did not really workout in the end. We really only used this source for the outline of the marijuana pot leaf for our board but the story is interesting. It makes sense that the people were not allowed to work for Starbucks because of past crimes. There is a law though that excludes marijuana from this though in California

Rick. "Tfs." TheFreshScent » Marijuana Field. The Fresh Scent, 4 May 2009. Web. 12 Mar. 2012. <http://thefreshscent.com/tag/marijuana-field/>.
We used this source for the picture on our board. The whole page is short articles about marijuana fields. The one that we took the picture from was simply a short one about 890 plants all about ten feet tall being found in Denver, just shows you that this plant is still going strong. Another one, not a source on here is above the article about the marijuana field in Denver, the article is about a new tool built that would make it easier to find grow operations in houses. The tool would fly over houses and find heat signatures from grow operations.

"Decriminalizing Marijuana." Acupuncture School Massage School Miami Florida. 29 Oct. 2010. Web. 12 Mar. 2012. <http://www.amcollege.edu/acupuncture-massage-blog/herbs-medicine/decriminalizing-marijuana/>.
In this article our group used the picture for the sign over the actual work. The marijuana pot leaf looked really nice and showed off a marijuana well. This source is actually not a good one. The article talks about the reasons why marijuana would not be a good thing to make legal. The article is difficult to read, the first part talks about why marijuana should be made illegal and then the second part talks about California’s prop 19 that was voted on in 2010 after this article was written. This article is from an acupuncture clinic and is not well written.

Facts that are one the borad:

Harry J. Anslinger becomes head of the FBN (August 12, 1930)

Mexicans bring recreational smoking to America

Reefer Madness is released (1937)

Prop 215 is passed making medical marijuana legal in Califorina

June 14 1930 Federal Bureau of Narcotics is created

June 17 1971 President Richard Nixon declares war on drugs.

Norml an organization trying to repeal the prohibition of marijuana is created in 1970

“There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz and swing, result from marijuana usage. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers and any others.” - Harry J. Anslinger

In 1969 the UN estimated that there were between 200,000,000 and 250,000,000 cannabis users in the world.

Marijuana has been illegal for less than 1% of the time that it’s been in use.

America’s first marijuana law was enacted at Jamestown Colony, Virginia in 1619. It was a law “ordering” all farmers to grow Indian hempseed.

Cannabis is a dioecious plant (i.e. an individual cannabis plant is either male or female)

Cannabis is a plant native to Central Asia that has spread all over the world and is probably the most widely used recreational and usually illegal drug in the world,

“Marijuana is the most violence-causing drug in the history of mankind.” - Harry J. Anslinger

Approximately 0.6 percent (22.5 million) of people used cannabis daily.

Cannabis used medically has several well-documented beneficial effects. Among these are: the amelioration of nausea and vomiting, stimulation of hunger in chemotherapy and AIDS patients, lowered intraocular eye pressure (shown to be effective for treating glaucoma), as well as general analgesic effects (pain reliever).

Modern Interpretation
Marijuana is no longer as hated as it originally was back in the 1930’s. Since then lots has changed, people no longer believe that by smoking marijuana you will stab someone to death and Reefer Madness is a funny movie. The most recent thing about Marijuana is the medical use that is becoming popular in the United States. The research done on marijuana has shown its medical uses. Cancer, glaucoma, and now even PSD in soldiers that come back from war. The next step for marijuana is its legalization.

Process Paper:
For this project we chose to do our project of the history of Marijuana and how it became illegal and then the start of it becoming legal again. We chose this because it was something we found ourselves interested in learning about and we also wanted a challenging and controversial topic. It makes the project that much harder and we wanted to tackle that extra milestone. Not only are you informing one on the subject but also you are forcing them to expect the facts and put their personal beliefs on the topic a side and take in new knowledge.

Most of the research we did had to be outside of school on our own time. This is because while in school and using the Philadelphia School District Internet connection many useful and extremely informative websites are blocked because they are about Marijuana, which is an illegal drug. While doing research at home we searched for hours and peer edited each other ideas for “good sources” before we agreed that the source was useful. We used Google advance searches and also watched many documentaries either together or separately and then came back and talked about what was talked about. We also searched YouTube for different types of PSA that were made. We wanted to have a mix of all possible types of sources that way our information was engaging and gave us ideas on how to show our work as well.

This project is related to the NHD theme because Marijuana has a very interesting history, which includes a Reaction, Revolution and a Reform, which is still taking, place today. Marijuana use dates back to BC times, Marijuana has been around from the beginning, whether it was Hemp or Marijuana. Marijuana has a point where it hit America hard and mostly everyone was against it and thought the drug made one crazy, which caused many to fear it. This then lead into the Revolution of Marijuana being made illegal which until recent has held strong. Following that comes the Reform of people starting to understand the Marijuana doesn’t make one crazy and in some cases can be very helpful and needed. It has medical uses that are very seriously needed and even personal uses that many enjoy. Marijuana’s past, present and even future has been a bumpy and will continue to be bumpy adventure with many important events that need to be highlighted and learned about, including the repetition of the RRRs.

Grupo de Perú, "El Juego de Amor"

https://www.scienceleadership.org/blog/El_Juego_de_Amor--_Allen-Chelsea-Jessica-Vinny-Grupo_de_Peru

Describe the Q3BM: what was the assignment?  What did your group decide to do and why?

We had to talk about relationship problems and various things having to do with relationships. My group made a podcast as if it was a radio station. A couple and their friend called in the get advice and help with the relationship that was going down hill. We thought this would be a good way to do the project that we all wanted to do.

What did you learn from doing this project?

We learned how to make a radio station/podcast. Also we worked on our grammar and pronunciation of spanish words and saying them on the spot. We also worked on having a continuing conversation without stoping.

How do you feel about your final product?

I love it! I think it turned out good. We all worked hard and put a lot of effort into it. I am very proud of it and want to thank my group for being so great with everything!

If you could do your project all over again, what would you do differently/the same?

I would probably read the description better because we were confused at first and maybe start earlier? But I like how everything worked out so over all I wouldn't change a thing.

-We all broke up the parts of who was doing what.

-All helped out making things flow good.

- Not being on schedule with the good doc.

What did you learn from doing this project? (skills, life lessons, words etc)
I made something that actually helps people that is written completely in spanish. It was awesome to make it. The topics were things that I just did a project on in English and now I did something similar but in a different language.

If you had more time to tweak your project, what would you change about it?
I would get more and better pictures. I would have them more specific and more interesting pictures. I would also add a song in at some parts in the PSA.

What did you enjoy (or not) about this project?
I liked the topic and the project idea. It is something I have done in English and doing it in spanish made it really cool to compare and contrast.

Should I do this project again with next year’s Spanish 3 classes?  Why or why not?
Yes, I think it was a good project for the class and the time of the year. Its a fun BM and very helpful to learning how to use the spanish we have just learned.

Epic Search

Gabby Nigro, Chelsea Smith, Aja Wallace, Dylan Cordivari, Alisa D.

This is the first project of the year in Dig-Vid class. We worked in a group of five and had to come up with a short film that had a protagonist and an antagonist along with supporting characters. We learned how to work the camera, along with different shorts and created a story board and a script. Then after all the filming we took what we filmed and learned how to edit and finalize it using Final Cut Pro.

This film is about a group of homeless people on a search to find something to eat. They haven't eaten in days and starting to go a little bit crazy and will just about anything to get their hands on food. They come across a snobby well off women and make some serious decisions that turn out to benefit them.

This I Believe; Everything Happens For A Reason

Posted by Chelsea Smith in English 3 - Pahomov on Friday, December 2, 2011 at 9:24 am

Ever since I was little my mom has always said "everything happens for a reason." This quote has always stuck with me. It makes it easy to fall back on.

About 3 years ago my grandma passed away. This was a hard thing for everyone in my family to deal with. My family is on the small side, with about 10 close members. So losing my grandma, which was the first person in my life to die, it was extremely hard. My grandma died on July 7. The last holiday we all spent together as a family was July 4th and we made sure it was special. From the day we found out she had cancer and that the cancer was slowly just going to kill her, we made every day amazing and with her.

My grandma had been on oxygen tanks for as long as I could remember and basic everyday tasks were a big struggle for her. She did a lot of sitting and eating and asking us to get her things from around the house. When we went out I use to roll her tanks around and everyone watched her close to make sure she was doing okay and wasn't straining herself. I know she had a hard life.

The doctors told us she was going to live for about 3 more months but within the following 3 weeks she got extremely sick and passed away, and she passed when she was alone in the room and soundly in her sleep. I know she was a strong woman and held on as long as she could.

She meant so much to us, and dealing with this is still hard to this day, but as my mom has always said, "everything happens for a reason." We try to keep this mind set when dwelling on the lose. It was time for my grandma to be put out of her suffering and to relax. God had called on her and wanted her to come home. The death of my grandma was suppose to happen and it had been planned from the day she set foot on this Earth that on July 7, 2009 she would part from us.

This lose is still hard to deal with, but knowing that this is how things are suppose be and that she is happy and enjoying herself, it makes me able to bare with the absents of her. I know one day I will join her and so will everyone in my family; we will, one day be a whole family again.

And that day I know is planned out and I will wait for that day to come.

De Dnde Vengo Yo?:Chelsea Ann Smith

Posted by Chelsea Smith in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 10:55 pm
For this project we had to crate a song or music video answering the question of "¿Do dónde vengo yo?," which means where did we come from. So in my song I talk about what has raised me and what has made me the person I am today.

I learned more spanish grammar from doing this project and was able to make many descriptive sentences. I also learned what is important to me to writing in a song and what has made me the person I am today.

I am really proud of the fact I didn't use a translator and I put a lot of time into writing my song and making sure it made sense.

If I were to do this project again, I would expand on the verses and make them a longer and about more topics.

  • What are you especially proud of?
I really like my refrán, i think it really works as a good part to repeat.

  • What do you anticipate having to change before recording your song?
I don't think my second verse is very strong nor do I think it makes sense. I need to get some people to look over that for and with me.

  • What did you talk about in your song?  Why did you choose to talk about those things in talking about where you come from?
I talked about how my family made me and my love for them. Also how soccer is a huge thing in my life, Jesus made me who I am and shaped my life and also about how music has a huge impact on me.

  • What kind of music are you planning on setting your lyrics to?
I want something kind of fast, not really sure what to use though, I have to continue think on this now.

Refrán:
vengo mi familia;
mi mama, mi papa, mi hermanos y
mi tia y bisabuelo
te amo, mucho te amo.

-It talks about my family and how I love them.
-I think it flows well
-I don't know what to improve, just be able to say it fast and well.
-It was hard to think of what way important enough to repeat throughout the song.

During the year in Mr. Block’s classes, both English and History he has really took a different way of teaching the same material other students my age are learning. Being a student of SLA we already don’t often use textbooks and we use Internet and hands on stuff but to expand on that we did a lot of role taking and becoming the past. This often happened more in history during the different trials we did. In the trials you had to become the roll of the side you were placed on. You didn’t pick this side and you had to learn the side of these people and make then look innocent whether or not you agreed. This was a challenge but told great self-control and really pushed the mind to think different. This was often a group project and everyone did a part, here is a link to the Google doc with all the information leading up to the trials.

When it came to history we learned a lot of different view points and where different people stand through out the world. It was interesting to see what other people think and why they think that because of how they were brought up in life. This was one thing we really focused on during the religion unit. "Is religion real?" This was a question we looked at during this unit as well. We studied what other believed in and what made them believe it. We did a benchmark, and I have to say it was one of my favorite benchmarks. We had to compare three or more religions in some way. So for my project, I compared the idea of God and what it is and why God is so important. Other people looked at issues of gay rights or heaven. This project forced you to learn about religions that you don’t practice and compare them and really study them in-depth. It helped open my views and it was a great learning experience.

To start off the year on the first day and the first page of our brand new crispy journals we wrote about a song we listened to. The song was sung by a woman and was about the travel process of clothing. The song kept bringing up the question of weather or not a person’s hands were clean and asked each listener if they thought their hands were clean. This was the start of the year and Mr. Block already had us thinking deeper into such common everyday things, our hands and the new back to school clothes everyone had on. It broadened my perspective and got me ready to understand how basic things were not really all that basic.

Towards the mid-end of the year we started a poetry unit and was able to write and create a wiki-space that was filled with our own poetry and writing pieces about how we understand poetry by different famous writers. From one of my pieces I said "I start for you, the flash of your hair, pushes me back, makes my heart whirl, fall to ground, your power is so overwhelming." It was really cool to see everyone write and perform their written pieces and to read over everyone’s personal wiki-spaces.

One of the biggest projects I have ever done in my whole life I can say I did this year. During this year we had to write monologues that turned into a story. These stories were about something about change and hope in other parts of the world and it involved them overcoming something. We started the project lost and confused but through the exercises and activities we did with Kate, a lady from the young play writers company, everyone was able to complete this project. There is no way I would have been able to do this without the help of my peers. They helped give great feedback and ideas to add to make the plot more interesting. It really gave peer editing a whole new meaning. This project included two Google documents, one with all the facts and information about our topic and country and the other was just strictly the monologues and the feedback to help us improve.

In English we read a book called Passing. This book was all about how to make you look or act one way to fit in with certain people, this was called passing. This book was based in the past and focused a lot on blacks trying to pass as whites because of shame or for their safety. With groups we were assigned parts of the book to reread and analyze closer. My group wrote a found poem, meaning we took quotes from the book and put it together to help explain and tell the story and themes of the book in a different way and then we presented it to the class. To do this project we all both it on a Google document and edited and wrote in together.

For my project I made an imovie. In this imovie i included pictures of my in the past, present and hopes for future. These pictures go to music and also have some voiceovers to keep the flow going.

2. Reflection:

  • What was the process of completing your project?
For this project I did the web maps and then got all the pictures together. I added in all the words on the slides with music and then voiced over select parts.

  • What did you do especially well?
I think what I wrote was really good and I think my spanish speaking was good to! I feel very improved over the year.

  • What would you change if you could do it again?
I wouldn't do a movie, I think I would make a book or something different.

  • What did you learn by doing this project?
I got really good at writing in spanish and making paragraphs.

 Are your hands clean?

When looking at my hands they do appear to look clean, but when you dig deep down and think about everything they have touched and everything they have been through, I can no longer say my hands are clean.  The song talks about how this lady buys a shirt at Sears and gets it on sale even though so much work and blood has been put into it. There are people over seas forced to work to make these shirts, barley getting paid and then their final products go to the store and they have the nerve to sell it cheap. It is degrading to the workers and everyone has a part in it, which makes out hands unclean.

The Connecting Hands of the World

Characters:
Abebe - the main character, she is an orphan and has aids.
Afework - the lady working at Kids R the Now who helps Abebe
Daniachew and Ayana - the kids of Mrs.Afework
Dr. Geteye - the doctor that diginos Abebe with aids.

Laura - American Sponsor Lady, Mother of Timmy and Sara

Act 1 Scence 1

(Abebe is walking through the villages.)

ABEBE

(stomach grumbling)

Walking through the small village that separated me from the only place near for me to get food, I saw a family. I walk this same path day after day, and see the same things, but something struck me odd on this day. They were the best thing I have ever seen since that day. They reminded me so much of the life I use to have, my happy and easier days. It was the life.

We were really happy. My mom worked in the fields all day and I helped her as much as I could. She tended the small bit of wheat that our family needed to get by and I would sit and talk to her. When the season of picking came, I would help her, we worked all day. It was hot and long, but it didn’t matter it was funny being with my mother.

I would carry two baskets of picked wheat into the shed and pile it up, and then run back to the field and pick up the next basket. I helped my mother make the baskets. She taught me so one day I could make them for when I had my own field to tend.

Every night at dinner, even though we had small bits of food, we still ate and we always sat at the table together. We talked and my father was amazing. He always told us stories from the day and was the funniest man I knew.

I never went a day without a smile. I remember them days. As I neared the last half a mile to stand in line for lunch the memories faded. the small yet so powerful bits of activities have stuck with me. I really do miss them days...

(the memories started to fade as the walk near its end. sigh and frown face)

                                                         Act 1 Scene 2

(The roof drips water, “drip drip drip” Abebe puts a bucket under the drid, takes a deep breath and begins to look for her blanket.)

ABEBE

The roof still has that hole that leaks. It is slowly getting bigger as the mud that makes the roof slowly slides down the sides. My house is falling apart, it is nothing like it use to be. Father use to fix it. He would make sure as soon as a problem stuck, he didn’t use fix it, he made it so much better. I am lucky i have a home, i guess, but what help does this home offer me? It doesn’t have warmth, love or shelter. Mother use to sew my blanket back together all the time, but now it has two holes that i can fit both my hands through at a time. Under that blanket I was covered in warm and her love for me, now i don’t know where it went, i guess it disappeared along with her when she got that horrible cold.

I’m so cold

(starts to shake, curls up in a ball and wraps the blanket around her, rocks back and forth)

Why not just sleep and live outside? At this point I don’t see the difference. The roof is disappearing as the mud slides, the floor, well what floor exactly, there isn’t any, just the ground same thing as what lies outside the walls. And the walls, oh boy, well they have holes just like the ceiling does. Father use to fix that to, the mud and mortar can no longer hold up and the strall is weak. I can’t fix them I’m barely ten, but they keep getting bigger. They are like windows, but Father said we didn’t need any windows they only showed weakness. I have 15 windows.

(Stands frowns, feeling of when a parent is disappointed in child.)

This house is so bad I feel like it may just crash down. Father would be mad. I’m sorry.

(looks shy.)

I think I’m moving out and

(grabs a couple special things and starts packing her stuff in a sheet) living outside, for my own good and safety. (ties up the sheet and walks out the biggest hole used as the door way.) Father would agree.

Act 1 Scence 3

(Lady from “Kids R the Now. “ the sponor program in Ethopia She is at the dinner table with her family, talking about the day of work like the daily routine of her family.

(Ms. Afework and her kids, Daniachew and Ayana are eating at the dinner table.)

             MS. AFEWORK

Work, it was alright (pause) well as good as it could be.

Why, why do you guys think. The kids I see and the stories I hear from them they are horrific. Not a single one one them today didn’t make me wanna cry. (pause) but I can’t. do you know how hard it is to not cry.

I know, I know, I’m late I just couldn’t leave I had to finish up something, I couldn’t just pause it for tomorrow, you can’t pause some one's life.

I didn’t think so, when you need to cry you need to cry, but I’m the only person these people have. I should be strong for them, that way I can help them, and encourage them to think of a brighter future. Do you understand?

I didn’t think so, it’s hard to understand the feels that both they and I have.

Well alright I’ll give you an example.

(as the mom explains it the actions of the girl will happen on the other side of the stage, and the monologues will switch back and forth)

(Abebe is lying on the ground leaning on a big rock, cuddled in a ball in a big open space. It is night-time)

Act 1 Scence 4

 ABEBE

uhh, its so cold,

(teeth chattering)

I would be fine if only i cold get to sleep. Tomorrow it would be different I would go to bed earlier and I will be stronger. Now just to get to sleep to night. (long pause)

What’s that noise?

(Abebe - wide eyed, still, but alert as footsteps in a near distance get closer and shadows begin to appear. Lights on that half of the stage fade out)

AHHH! Help!

(Screams continue until lights are all the way out, stage is pitch black. A big still man figure is leaning over her)

(switch to other side of the stage)

(Ms,Afework looking at her kids, still at the dinner table )

Act 1 Scence 5

                                    MS. AFEWORK

So today as i was walking I came upon this one girl, she was cold and lying on the ground. She was in a little ball, shaking. Her clothes were ripped, like the pair of pants I made you throw away last week, do you remember?

(say it slowly, and pause after each sentence)

You do, now think worse. The rips were so thick, so wide. She was naked. She was bruised and bleeding. Her face was wet with tears.

I walked over to her because as part of Kid R the Now it’s my job to help kids that are walking and doing tasks by themselves. I went to check to see if she had parents, a family. She has nothing. She is by herself.

                                (looks at her children’s faces)

That’s what I thought, what if you were alone, what if I died. Now do you understand my moods.

(kids head kind of nod)

As a mother and having my own family, its natural to put myself in the position of her mother or think about if they was one of you guys. I wouldn’t be able to bare it.

Had enough? Well the story isn’t over, not even to worst part either. She flinched at any type of movement towards her. She was scared of me, me of all people. She didn’t want me to touch her and when i tried to touch her and clean her up, she screamed. Screamed thing like “no, don’t touch me, stop. Please stop.”

Her mind had been messed with, she couldn’t tell the different between hurt and help. She had been destroyed from the kid inside to the outside layer of skin. Can you guess what has happen to her? Do you know what she bared the night before?

                             (confused faces from the kids)

I can’t even tell you what all happened, but what I do know is she was raped, she an eleven year old girl. She had been pinned out, taken advantage of, and stripped of her childhood last night. Now after it, you know what she was left with, she is honored of having this random men’s aids. This is why I am upset, I was with her when she found out, i was next to her and I was her shoulder to cry on. I was her only shoulder.

So no i couldn’t just leave. She is a very smart girl. Her parents died from aids, and now she knows she has it, and she knows what she is destine to. She is destine to a shorter life and is destine to die the same way her parents did.

Can you understand that? This is what my daily work life is. Be thankful and stop complaining about me being late. Eat your dinner.

(family resumes dinner, kids head down staring at their plates.)

Act 1 Scence 6

ABEBE

(the camera guy walks away. Abebe, Talking to herself while looking down at herself)

Thank you. Thank you so much. This family I don’t even know, that doesn’t live anywhere near me and that don’t have a plan to met me wants to help me. What are they getting out of providing for me? A picture that i so dread taking? There has to be more, wouldn’t you think? But they have really made my life into something. I can still remember that horrible house and that horrible night (chills run up her back, she flinches) I never thought it would be possible for me to be here. Here, I have friends and a new family of people that love and care for me. A strong support system and no holes possible to fall through and back into my old habits. I’m sitting here, warm. In clothes that fit and that are new and still have color, with a tummy that is full and with feet that aren’t killing me. Just weeks, days ago I was cold, sitting outside unaware and scared for tomorrow. I have medical treatment now to help me with my aids and schooling to give me the most of live. They are helping me live with my aids so I can live long and make a life with my education to help me get there.

(looks up and sees pictures of other families on the wall)

I miss being a family, a real family. A family with a mother and father, a family that was blood. There is a special bond there that only people that share blood have. I can’t explain it but it’s there. (looks up at the picture, and lightly touches it with her finger) In some way this sponsor lady in America makes me, makes me angry yet weak. Yes she is helping me, which is great but is she just proving me that I cannot do it myself? Can I not take care for myself, because of this family, I no longer have a chance to prove myself. I just don’t know. I feel like she is telling me that I am not good enough for my own self.

Don’t get me wrong I am grateful, but when is enough, enough i feel even more helpless now then before.

(she sits back down, folded legs and fake smiles for a picture)

               (under her breath)

I just don’t know anymore..

Act 1 Scence 7

             LAURA

(looking at the picture of the Ethiopian girl)

She is beautiful,

             (yelling in the living room)

everyone, Hun, kids, guys?

             (back at the picture)

Look at her she is great. She looks like her smile is getting brighter. And her body looks healthy. I’m glad I can help her in some kind of way. Look at them, Timmy and Sara they are the best and I love them with all my heart, I mean I gave birth to them; they are my babies. They are what make my day, I get up in the morning for them and everything I do is based around them. What would their life be like if they lived here alone and raised themselves? If I had such a disease like her mother did. What if I had Aids, the thought of it is just so hard,

             (shivers)

knowing my husband had it or cheated on me and got it, and I unwillingly and unaware was exposed to it. It’s heart breaking to think I could of been there and to think I could have past it to my children if it was before I was born.

The thought of it all just mind boggling, I don’t even allow them to be home alone for longer then 2 hours nor do I let them use the stove. My children wouldn’t be able to do it, they live such a sheltered life. She is brave and though I have never met her I can tell she is incredibly smart, even before the school that I have paid for her to attend. Her perseverance is phenomenal. At the age 12 she is already a greatly mature adult, more of an adult then I could ever be.

I wonder if she gets to play like a kid, my kids biggest concerns are there toys and chocolate milk, not how they will eat or if they will eat that night. Even with I, i think about the things I have to do for the following day or clean the house, instead she thinks about is she going to be able to find somewhere to sleep. Someone else’s misfortune shouldn’t be what makes me realize how much I have and how much everyone hear in America is doing better compared to countries like Ethiopia.

Her great long black hair,

             (looks at the picture)

so thick and well brushed, and her clothes so colorful and clean. Them beautiful big brown eyes are the focus of the picture, they tell so much of her feelings and I can’t figure out why but her eyes just automatically make me smile, its like forced upon. Her smile and her teeth look like they are being treated, it just makes me so happy that i have my own tooth brush, I never really thought about it before. Toothbrushes are so second nature to us here, but for her it’s is not at the top of the list. That what makes me so happy to send her money every month, she too should have what I have and what my family has. I’m so proud of my children, as proud as a mother could ever be.

             (yelling in the living room)

Guys, are you coming, Timmy, Sara, Hun? Its dinner time, we are have spaghetti and meatballs and it’s getting cold!

Education In the World (Op-Ed)

Posted by Chelsea Smith in World History - Block on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at 11:26 am
Every morning I wake up at 6:30 a.m. and get ready for school. I am in tenth grade and everyday I dread this activity so much. But these feeling for an American teenager are normal. I have heard every kid in my class talk about how they much rather be home then be in school. Honestly, doesn’t everyone feel this way? Would you pick writing a paper or going to school over watching cartoons or a baseball game? Americans are lucky though, yet they don’t act like it. Do they understand that they seriously have it made?

Look at the facts, In South America on average a child has fourteen years of formal education, but in Africa on average a child has four years of formal education. Ten years. Kids go to school for ten years less in Africa then they do in South America. Think, how much less would you know if you took away ten years of your education? In Africa they spend on average $48 US dollars annually per child where globally there is on average $629 US dollars spent per child for education annually. India spends 3.3% of its GDP on education while on average developed countries spent 5.8%.

Since America spends the most on education, you would think they have the best students because of the amount of possible opportunities, right? In reality, the national drop out rate is 31%, 31 students out of every 100 drop out and never even get a high school diploma. That averages out to about 7,000 students that drop out of school each year in the United States. Our country spends so much money on education that other countries don’t have and our kids are just deciding not to attend?

In China before 1949, the literacy rate was 20% of its people, but today they have a rate of 99% of their youth can read and write. In about 60 years China has increased their literacy rate by almost 70% and yet America can’t even seem to keep more then 75% of their kids in school until the end of senior year.

In Afghanistan less then one third of the people are literate, but just this past month President Hamid Karzai, tried working things out with the Taliban. He and his men are having talks with them about creating peace for the schools in the war torn country. One of the people quoted in the recent articles said, "We are not afraid of guns and bombs, but don't burn the schools of your sons. Don't burn the schools of your daughters." Afghanistan is in a war state and yet the death of their selves is not the first thing on their mind, their ability to be educated is.

We have countries struggling and can barely put out money for education, others that are fighting as hard as possible with their life on the line to maybe get education for their children, and some lucky countries that have climbed the mountain of hard ache and are still trailing along strong, and yet the one country that has it easy, can’t even have the honor of giving 80% of the country a high school education. Now explain it to me, to the whole world, how does that make sense? Why can’t we mange to make kids want have an education? There are kids dying to go to school and America has kids that decide not to go. The honor of education is placed in front of them and yet they aren’t able to look at it and be grateful enough to accept it and treasure it with their hearts.

Mi Rutina Diaria (:

What did you learn from doing this project? (skills, life lessons, words etc)
I learned how to say all the words i used in the movie, also how to conjugate the words correctly. I also realized all the stuff I do during my day that I normally take for granted. I was able tot make the movie and have it flow and be something interesting to watch.

How do you feel about your final product?
I think it turned out really good. I think I should of had a closing slide or something, but I thought it was interesting and funny. Also I tried really hard for it to be something that people would want to watch.

If you could do your project all over again, what would you do differently/the same?

I would try and use other programs and mix things up, also to try and add other things I do during the day. I used still images maybe next time have it be video, but i would continue to use a song and have subtitles. I think them two things really worked well.

Did you enjoy this project? Why or why not?

I did enjoy this project. I love making movies and stuff and the topic of it wasn't to hard either. It was about what we did during the day, but there was so much person creativity which was great. It was fun!

Chelsea's Descriptive Essay

Posted by Chelsea Smith in English 2 - Block on Monday, December 20, 2010 at 11:58 am

The Connection Between Two

Grinding her teeth as she looked up at the clock seeing that she was now over 20 minutes late from when she had made plans. She started throwing the towels out of the bathroom door, into the hallway to form a pile to take down stairs to the laundry room. Next thing you know all you hear throughout the house is “Crash!”

My mom, my sister and me all dropped our current work and ran to see the catastrophe that had just happened. One of the high-speed towels thrown by my sister hit the wall and had knocked down my mom’s personal thimble collection that consisted of every trip she ahs been on, everything from the shore to the islands. Luckily not all had fell and out of the ones that did fall only three broke. The thimbles sat on a shiny thin shelf and had three shelves built in. It was stained dark brown. It was open to touch and look at but I guess that’s not the best way to keep them on display, but it was still extremely upsetting.

From the look on my mothers face, I just completely understood, the emotion of losing something, something really special. My mother’s collection of thimbles is like bits of memory of her past life, where she has been and what she has seen. The breaking of one if these thimbles are like losing that memory forever. It was heartbreaking; I could see it in her eyes. I feel that this feeling is mutual; everyone has been there and knows the feels. Everyone has that one thing that gives their life meaning, the one thing that shows their life in a nutshell. From everything bad you encounter in life comes something so great, that one thing that tops the bad and keeps your train chugging on down the tracks; it’s when something so great happens. Not something huge in life, but that tiny little surprise that really makes your day. We have all been there, and so have I.

We all waited recklessly while my mother was gone, we all waited for the bells on the door to jingle to let us know that she was home and that the dinner too. My mother walked in the door, no not with a big brown paper bag with grease stains, she walked in with a huge bat and pumpkin orange bucket with a high thin handle which my mom was holding it from. The bucket had lines of dark purple as well.

After dinner that night, I was honored to get the empty bucket of where our dinner had been the hour pervious. It had been washed out and scrubbed hard to get rid of all the sauce and the smell. It now smelled like show kind f apple, that’s the kind of soap we had that week.  I was blown away at the fact that this bucket had just become mine! I knew I had to use it for something good and what was better then to make my stickers into a great big collection, because it was something that was important to me and was something I used often. I wanted to show it off and make people wonder what is the content of this bucket. “Thanks, mom. I love Halloween!” I remember saying to my mom, while I waked away with the bigger grin that I can ever remember on my face.

The smallest things can make one so happy. When it relates to something so great, like ones collection. Though this collection of mine is just pieces of paper decorated with random picture with a layer of sticky glue on the back, making easy to put these picture everywhere. Adding on to collections no matter what kind, it feels great, it makes you feel that you have expanded on life and that your life is meaningful. It’s a measure of where you been and your amount of effort.

This material things that we find so important, important enough to cry over and important enough to spent more on, why are they so important. These material things all have meaning; like my mom says only you know where you have been and what you have gone through, only you know how to live your future, it all depends on your past. It is important to reflect in your life, look back on what you have done and know what you want your future to look at. Collects are pictures and objects that show this in a nutshell.

Now that I am older, my collects are still with me and I am able to look back and see the Teletubbies stickers that I had when I was 6 and remember how important they were to me, and that my favorite one was the yellow Teletubbie whose name was Lala. They aren’t something you can find in stores anymore. I still have the stickers from my clown birthday party that I had at my house in pre-K. I even still have my Pokémon book full of all my teaching stickers that I used for when I played school. Everything shows different chapters in my life, and allows me to hold onto that memory. Collections help adults and teens hold on to the child in them and always remember the stages in their life and reflect them. It’s like the retro clothes your mom still has from when she was in high school in the 70s. It allows you to grasp the meaning in what life truly has in store for you.

Chelsea's Language Autobiography

Posted by Chelsea Smith in English 2 - Block on Monday, December 20, 2010 at 11:56 am

Living is something everyone does, and everyone lives on the same place, Earth, but why is it that we all live so different lives? What could be the independent variable in which we have complete control over, in this experiment of life? Language, the way people talk is key here, everyone starts the same on the same path, but from a early age, to early to really know what you are doing the way of speech puts you in a place. This place defines you and is the reason for where you stand in life, how life plays out and most importantly who is in your life to help mold it into what it becomes in the future.

“Why you in my pocket, yo?”  My sister said with a raised tone in her voice.

“What? Amber, what? What is that even suppose to mean?” my mom said getting kind of mad at this point in the conversation.  “Amber, your sister was just asking you a question, do not get all hyper and what is ‘why you in my pocket’ even suppose to mean? That doesn’t even sound nice.” Her voice was starting to sound concerned about the language my old sister was starting to use.

This conversation with my sister followed a discussion of where her paycheck went. My sister, Amber had been complaining about how she was broke and had no money to go out nor to fill her pocket, even though the day before this she had gotten a thick pay check. To me this didn’t make sense and from hearing her complain multiple times it made me eager to confront her. When this simple question was asked by me her response was ‘Why you in my pocket’ which isn’t correct grammar or anything close to what my home family speaks like. This type of language reflects the friends that she surrounds herself with when she is out. This quote from her, plus her tone did not sound pleasant nor did it make me want to continue the conversation. It concerned us more and made both, my mother and I shake our heads with disappointment. Differences in language make people uncomfortable when it comes to conversations, mainly because they cannot understand the differences and the questioning factor of, is what I am saying going to be accepted by this person. Everyone no matter if they have a really strong and noticeable background everyone has different ways of talking with different people. When it comes to many different ways of speaking, that causes another challenge to arise. When to use certain languages and how to make sure it doesn’t slip in front of the wrong person. Which is what happened in this case. This phrases said by my sister probably would have been okay to say to her friends and she would of “won” the argument that she was in.

“Today was the worst day ever, it sucked mom.” I said, as I walked in my front door and dropped my school bag to the ground. I tore my shoes off my feet and through them against the upstairs steps. Then took a deep breath and stared in the eyes of my mother with no energy.

“Chelsea Ann, what kind of language is that?” my mom said ignoring the fact that I was in a not so good mood.

“Mom, you don’t understand my day literary sucked, it was the worst” I said reassuring her that the language I had used was for a reason and was being used to describe the degree of how bad of a day it was.

“I don’t care, I don’t want to hear that, it just isn’t a very nice word, you can use other words to describe your day. I don’t like that word, it just sounds fail.”

This is a normal conversation that happens with my mom. The content normally varies but the same things happen, I always get told about my use of words and how they do not sound nice. My mom works in a school and deals with little kids all day from the grades of K-3. So you can imagine her language being very PG rated. She is also quit proper when it comes to talking because she is use to kids picking up everything she says, so she is almost always formal. Another thing that really bothers me mother is the phrase “my bad.” It has just become one of her pet peeves, but I often use it because I have caught on to it from school and friends.

“Oh, no not yet, my bad. I’ll do it when I’m done writing my English paper.” I said as I said on my computer at the dining room table, listening to music and checking my Facebook.

“Chelsea, what is this my bad? You know I hate it, it sounds so ghetto.” She said in a tone that allowed me to know that she was appalled by my language.

This situation above was not a serious issue with my mother so I said “my bad” like I normally would to anyone my age. Saying ‘I’m sorry’ is a lot more formal and I would use it after I did something wrong so naturally ‘my bad’ came out but to my mother’s ears it sounded ‘ghetto’ and trashy to say.

In one of the short stories we read in class in-titled Tongue Tied, The mother of the main character had cut her daughter’s frenum, which is the thin piece of skin under a tongue connecting it to the jaw. The daughter is the only one with this piece cut and she wonders about it a lot, when she brought it up to her mother, her mother’s response to doing it was, “I cut it so that you would not be tongue-tied. Your tongue would be able to move in any language. You’ll be able to speak languages that are completely different from one another. You’ll be able to pronounce anything. Your frenum looked too tight to do those things, so I cut it.” (Kingston, p.164) In the long run the daughter had a lot of problems with her speech and had a speech impediment, but the reason her mom did it was because in her mind she thought it would help her daughter. She did not want anything to hold her daughter back, which leads me to believe my mom has similar goals to the main character mom.

My mother did not cut my tongue or do anything so drastic to come close to that mother, but my mother does want the best for me. My mother does want my life to be amazing and she does want all three of her children to shine. So when she gets upset over our language I guess it makes sense. The little habits we pick up while with our friends, over time it turns into bad habits that could break us when it comes to job/college interviews. I know my mother does not want that, she is always pushing us forward to type proper when on Myspace or Facebook and to talk proper and normal. When it has come to job interviews she has me run things and stresses the importance to me, I know she wants the best and means well. Sometimes she comes off strong and from difference sense in my life I can see her anger and degree of her being upset, but I shouldn’t take it to personal because she is only trying to better me and push me to be the best. I can see that now and what really made this clear to me was the movie we learned in class about the different ways of speaking throughout the country. The movie has really made it clear that different dialects are looked down upon and looked at as being stupid. Listening to the people talk and hearing what parents of people in the film told them, about because of their accent they always need to be one step ahead and they are stuck proving that they are just as capable. I know my mother does not want me to fall under this category and I guess now I will not argue with her about my speech, I will just aim to do better because I know it’s my future that’s in the hands of my teenage speech.

Trip to Espaa

This project was to help our friend Noah learn how to speak Spanish. So we came up with a story of our friend going to Spain and how we are teaching him Spanish, that way Noah is able to look at our video and learn for himself.

After watching the video we created, Noah should be able to...
  • hold basic convocations with people about himself and how he is doing
  • order food and say thank you
  • say what he did in the past summer.
First, we found it very important to be able to talk to people even if it's only very basic. People are going to be the ones helping you with things you need so you should be able to talk to them. Also everyone eats and when you're hungry, there is nothing worse then not being able to get food because you can't say what you want. Also the goal of the project was to teach Noah how to talk about last summer, which is an important thing to him.

In the group we did a really good job on being serious and filming the scenes and making them look good. We really worked well together in that part and was albeit o get it done kind of fast. If we had more time, we wouldn't of waited until the day before/of to film and maybe given ourselves a more spaced out time line.

The question we have for Noah is, did this movie help you?  Do you feel it helped improve your level of Spanish? Why or why not?
