​How does this project relate to the real world?
This relates to the real world because in some occupations you need to know the heights and certain buildings. 

What was the most exciting portion of this project and why? What was the least exciting portion to this project and why?

The most exciting portion was going outside, I like the outdoors. The amount of work that was needed towards this benchmark. I had a lot of other work to complete plus this was very overwhelming. 

What did you learn from completing this project?

I learned not to procrastinate and to ask for help when I need it.

​This project relates to the real world architect wise. This is the type of stuff they have to do in order for buildings to make sense and go along with the neighborhood.

The most exciting part was just going outside to look at the buildings because it was just nice to be outside doing work instead of inside. The least exciting was the drawings, it was a lot and I don't like drawing

I learned that height of buildings can be determined with measuring the building itself. To me that's pretty amazing

​Reflection Questions:

How does this project relate to the real world?
This project relates to the real world because it shows real life methods of measuring buildings. People may not always have measuring tape to measure buildings so the stick and mirror method make the process very easy. Furthermore we showed how architects realistically measure the area of a building so they can do things such as paint buildings while accounting for the space that windows take up on a building. Another example of how this project relates to the real world is that we found the area of windows which many carpenters do in order to replace them or make them bigger.


What was the most exciting portion of this project and why? What was the least
exciting portion to this project and why?
The most exciting portion of this project was when we got to go outside and do our methods of finding building height. It was a nice change of pace to be able to go outside and smell fresh air whilst still continuing our mathematical studies. Also I got see more of the buildings surrounding Science Leadership Academy. The least exciting portion of this project was doing the calculations for each method. It was tedious and problematic to understand how the stick and mirror methods worked but when we set up the proportions everything became clear.

What did you learn from completing this project? 
From this project I learned how to manually calculate the height of a building with very simple objects. I learned how helpful a mirror and stick can be when I need to find the height of something. Also I learned how google earth works and how people update building dimensions on google map maker. One of the coolest things I learned was how to find elevation on google earth. I saw that the elevation of the ground on google earth was not zero feet and I had to subtract what ever number was at ground height from the elevation that the building was via google earth.

​1. How does this project relate to the real world?
This project relates to the real world because this is how people might measure the height of a building to make estimates and stuff. I think they would use this in like the construction business to estimate the height of buildings and stuff. This could also be used for projects like we did in this class. You could also use it to measure the height of other things besides buildings like we did before to measure doors and lockers and things like that. The mirror method is really useful for measuring shorter things like that. The stick method is better for measuring taller things like my building. 

2. What was the most exciting portion of this project and why? What was the least exciting portion to this project and why?
The most exciting portion of the project was when we got to go outside and measure. I liked it because we weren't locked up in the math room being bored. It was pretty interactive and it gave us some freedom. Its good cause we are good kids so we dont do anything bad but we dont have to stay up in the class and be bored. The least exciting portion was doing the calculations and stuff cause thats just boring but it was useful that we got to do it in class so that we didnt have a lot of homework and stuff. 

3. What did you learn from completing this project?

From completing this project I learned a lot of things. I learned that the mirror method is the easiest but it also does not really work well for tall buildings like mine. I did it twice but both times the results were wrong and not even close so I had to do verification methods so that i could find out close to the right answers. I also learned that if i dont do my homework im not going to be caught up with what we are doing in class so i have to do it.

This project relates to the real world by us taking measurements with mathematical methods on taking height measurements. It tells us how to take measurements of buildings by using the shadow, stick, and mirror methods. 


  The most exciting part of this project was when I drew the entire block because I love drawing. In the other hand, the least exciting part was when I had to take the height measurements because it was stressful. I had to redo it several times because the height measurements were not similar to each other at times.


  I learned how the methods work and I have a better understanding of why actually learn about what we learn about.

Q3 BM Reflection

In the "real world," many professions involve math, and some even incorporate geometry. For many of these jobs, workers will be sent to streets to measure buildings and find building attributes. For instance, Google Maps is a program that has details and pictures of all over the world, and members of Google are sent out to take pictures of and take measurements of these places and buildings. This project provided a view into the life of a Google Maps street worker and someone who uses Geometry in their daily life.
The most thrilling part of the project, in my opinion, was the scaling of the buildings and creating the final drawing. I was able to create a relaxing work environment after school under Mr. Pilla's supervision that was ripe for my enjoyment of the project and catered to my creative side. I was able to give it my all and really bring it home for my group with this final drawing, something that felt really good to accomplish.
There wasn't too much I disliked about the project, being that it was based so much on reality, something I think gives a project real value. If forced, I'd have to say that the part I liked the least was the actual measuring of the buildings using the mirror method. It was not only cumbersome and required validation, but my group needed a bit of push in the process. That being said, the whole project moved very smoothly for me, and I feel I surprised myself in the mathematical aspects of it.
I learned about applying geometrical concepts to architecture, something I've been passionate about for awhile, and realized a value in mathematics. I learned that, although mathematics isn't a necessary subject passed elementary school, it is a valuable resource for understanding the world and the way we live today.

Reflection

1) This project relates to the real world because we had to go outside and take measurements from houses in the area around our school. People who built these houses and buildings had to measure the height, width, length , area and perimeter to build it correctly. Our group had to measure these building and get the height, width, length, area and perimeter to complete this project. Measuring different things was the main point of the project. We also measured different things on the buildings we were assigned like the windows, doors and bricks. By doing this project it gave us a bigger insight on the building around us. 

2) The most exciting part of this project was going outside and measuring the buildings hands on. We used tape measures and yard sticks to get the measurements of the buildings we had. Even though our tape measure was broke, we mad it work. We got to help each other with our buildings and take pictures of us standing in front of the building for one of the methods and I enjoy taking pictures so that part was fun for me. The least exciting part for me was drawling our blue print. Even though i enjoy drawling the buildings had to be very detailed and that took longer than I expected.

3) What I learned from completing this project is different types of ways to measure a building and different ways to get the height of the building. I learned many different methods that I thought were difficult but ended up using them when I understood it more and that made it much easier for me. I also learned how to do different measurements using technology. I used different apps and I also used google maps to determine a lot of things I needed for my building. I used google maps to draw my blueprint of the building I had and that was very helpful cause I could see everything without being there in person.

1) This project relates to the real world because if you want to become an architect and remodel building or fix it up buildings or certain areas in a place you'll need to know the area and perimeter of the building knowing how much space it takes up to that. But nobody has actual time to measure the building by hand. You can just use one of the methods we used. Also if you want to rebuild your home or make some changes and make it look better (like change the windows or doors..etc.) you need to know the perimeter and area of those objects.
2) The most exciting part of this project was actually letting people see my building through my eyes. Which was when I got the chance to draw and color out my building on poster paper. Another exciting part was when our group was given the chance to go outside and measure what we needed for the project and take pictures of our building with us standing next to it. The least exciting part of this project was doing the math and calculating the height, area, and perimeter of my building. I also did really enjoy having to worry about printing and putting the paper together and making sure my group members we on track. it took too much of my time having to go back when I got the wrong calculation and worrying about my group members.
3) From completing this project I learned that there always alternatives in measuring buildings, if you make one mistake in math it can mess up everything so make sure everything is done accurately, and that math includes a lot of time and patience. I also learned a lot about how to use the mirror method and the picture method and I got a full good understand about it and why it's used.

SLA Debate Dominates at Voices of Philadelphia Tournament

For the second year in a row, SLA"s debate team crushed the competition at the annual Voices of Philadelphia tournament!


Nikki Adeli and RubyJane Anderson swept the competition, amazingly going 6-0 straight through the day to win the tournament. In the final round, Nikki and Ruby debated none other than SLA's Mohamed Marzouk and Manna-Symone Middlebrooks, who came in second place in the tournament! Not stopping there, every SLA team advanced to the Quarterfinal rounds, with Jhonas Dunakin and Allison Patterson coming in 5th place and Katherine Hunt and Klarissa Hudson coming in 7th overall. Adding to their incredible achievements, SLA Students Mohammed Marzouk, Jhonas Dunakin, and Allison Patterson tied for the third-highest speaker score! Lastly, but certainly not least, the 2013 Voices of Philadelphia Sweepstakes Champion Award was presented to SLA! Coaches Ms. Rami, Jeff Kessler, and the Penn For Youth Debate volunteers could not be more proud of the team's achievements. Please congratulate these students on their incredible success!

​Reflection Questions:

How does this project relate to the real world?
-I believe that this project can be use in a real life setting. There are many occasions where we want bigger and better things, for instance remodeling our homes. What if we wanted some new windows or just paint those ugly window shutters. In these cases it would be similar to get an estimate of your building in order to buy the proper amount of materials so you’re not spending over the amount you would normally have to spend. Also, there might be a time where you have a budget and want to know if you’d have enough money to buy all of your materials once you’ve gotten the perimeter of your home and then found out how much the materials would be in all according to that. So you see those are only two example of how this project could come in handy in the real world. 

What was the most exciting portion of this project and why? What was the least
exciting portion to this project and why?


-This project was very hands on. I would have to say that was one of my favorite parts of this project. Being able to go outside and work with our partners in an outside community was a change but a good one. I also would have to say that I had a good group and we worked very well together. One thing that I didn’t like about this project was having to use the new material to find the height of the building, it was difficult trying to confirm the exact height of the buildings and there might be some miscalculations with them. 

What did you learn from completing this project?

-What I learned about this project was that calculating height is hard! Not really, it is a long process but it’s fairly simple once the formula is familiar to you. It is also a very useful tool to use if you ever needed to calculate the height of something. Also learned that you should have serval verifications because it’s fairly easy to mess up when trying to calculate numbers and what not. Have a good measuring tape or tools in general would be very useful and help you complete the calculations more accurately.

How does this project relate to the real world?

This project relates to the world by comparing to the house

builders. House Builders were made to design there own

building and to able to design they would have to figure 

out the measurements for the right size of the building. By

figuring out the height and feet.


What was the most exciting portion of this project and 

why? What was the least exciting portion to this project

and why?

It was great to work outside and work well with my team mates 

for the project and it was very detail to explain for our measurements.

I think something excited about the project was to learn something new.


What did you learn from completing this project?

I learned how to figure out to measure the height of the 

building and figuring out the feet to the house. I learned 

how to use multiple equations in order to find out the

 calculations.

Course Blog Post Directions:

  1. Obtain a real picture of the building you are assigned (you can include surrounding buildings if necessary).
  2. Download this picture to your computer and save it to your desktop.
  3. Take a picture of your building on your final drawing and send it yourself/download it on your desktop (you can include surrounding buildings if necessary).
  4. Open up the application called Pages. Choose a blank document.
  5. Drag your street picture and your final drawing onto this document.
  6. Place them side-by-side.
  7. Screen shot this picture. (To screen shot a photo you have to hold command, shift, and the number 4 down and a new cursor will appear. Drag the area of the picture you want to capture. The picture should now appear on your desktop.)
  8. Finally, go to the Geometry course on Slate and upload the side-by-side image to your new post.

Reflection Questions:

  •   How does this project relate to the real world?

As stated in the original project description, many architects and construction workers use the methods we’ve used in this unit to measure the heights of buildings and other large constructions. It also relates to the real world because we used actual buildings in Philadelphia. We didn’t get them from some sort of online activity, we actually went outside and looked at real places that people have built (which is very cool). We used methods that required physical movement and not just sitting in a chair, and applied real-word situations to our techniques. These are some ways it relates to the real world. 

  •       What was the most exciting portion of this project and why? What was the least exciting portion to this project and why?

I would say the most exciting part of the project was being able to go outside. It was a little fun walking somewhere, taking measurements of real buildings and recording them down in a notebook like some sort of mathematician. It was fun working with my group members to get the measurements; it kind of felt like a game. A fun, educational game. I also really liked being able to write a proposal about the changes we all wanted to make to our buildings. That was fun. I can’t think of any part of the project that I particularly disliked. 

-       What did you learn from completing this project?

I learned how to properly apply the methods we learned about to real-world situations, as mentioned briefly before. I also learned a little more about the street of 208 North 21st street, which was the block our group was assigned to. I learned more about how to manage time when you can’t just hop right on your computer and do everything at once. We had to factor in finding time to actually go outside when needed and get some measurements. I can’t remember ever having a math project like that here. Those are a few of the thing’s I’ve learned.

Q3 Geo Benchmark Reflection

1)  This relates to the real world, and can be practically used.  If you need to know the height of something, and don’t have the ability to (or are too lazy to go and get the proper tools) these methods are quite useful.  All one needs to use these methods are are a mirror/stick and a tape measure, instead of some complicated surveying tool.
    Also, these methods are just some of the ways similar triangles can be used.  Variations of these methods can be used to determine distance, or angles.  It is simply making a smaller version of what you are measuring, and then multiplying it based on a proportion.

2)  The most exciting part of the surveying project to me was the surveying itself.  I enjoyed the calculating and the recording and the measuring.  It was also my least favorite part.  When we were measuring, we constantly had to watch out for cars.  We had to abandon our attempt more than once because the mirror we were using was in the street (we quickly found the obvious answer to that problem).  It was also creepy, because we were just standing there looking at people’s houses, and did not want to look suspicious.

3)  From completing this project, I learned much.  I had previously thought that similar triangles were basically useless, just something we had to learn in math class.  This project proved me wrong.  There are, in fact, quite a lot of uses for them.  I also learned that mirrors do have uses outside of making sure you look good.  They are used in the mirror method, which is what i used to measure the buildings.  This method is very imprecise, but does give you a general idea of the height of what you are measuring.

​How does this project relate to the real world?

It shows the work of architectures. How they have to draw blue prints and making building designs. It shows how measuring and using math really does matter when you get a job such as architecting and building.  


 What was the most exciting portion of this project and why? What was the least
exciting portion to this project and why?
 
I think the most exciting part was going outside, getting lots of fresh air. Except it was a little awkward measuring someone else's house. It was cool to go outside and having the teachers trust us enough for us to do our work fluently and efficiently. The least exciting part was doing the poster and trying to draw stones because their not perfect so when you try to perfectly draw them imperfect to the point where they are perfectly imperfect you gets stones that are not perfectly imperfect. And it's annoying


What did you learn from completing this project?


That maybe being an architect is not for me at all and that I would hate the job.

How does this project relate to the real world?

This project relates to the real world simply because it involves everyday math. In the real world, no matter what it is that you are doing, it involves math. This project also relates to the real world because measuring houses and making modifications to buildings, and even creating blueprints are things that citizens to as a career such as architectural designing and engineering. In the real world, people are always making modifications and finding ways to make things new and more efficient. 


What was the most exciting portion of this project and why? What was the least exciting portion to this project and why?

The most exciting portion of this project would be the "blueprint." I think this was the best part, because this portion gave us the opportunity to expand our creativity and use perspective drawing. I liked this portion a lot because one of my goals in life is to become a professional architect and creating a blueprint fitted this category perfectly. 


The least exciting portion of this project would be actually going outside and measuring the houses using one of the methods taught. I didn't like this portion because during the time it was freezing cold and jotting down notes and measuring the houses wasn't pleasant. I would of liked this portion more, if the weather was better.

What did you learn from completing this project?

After completing this assignment, I learned how powerful triangles were in the math world. I understood that when using the stick, mirror, or even the shadow method, the shape of a triangle played an important role. I also learned that you should always explore multiple methods for calculating and measuring height and width because the results may very. For example, when I did the mirror method, my measurements weren't as accurate as opposed to duplicating my body height to get the actual building's height.

Hamlet Close Reading- Rose

Shakespeare as a writer has affected many different people. He teaches about loss and anger throughout his plays. As a play Hamlet is a prime example of how he mixes anger into the grieving of losing someone close to you. In the passage, Act 1 Scene 2 Lines 147-164, Hamlet displays the sense of neglect he feels after his fathers death. He starts off by calling out in exasperation and frustration in the opening quote “Heaven and earth”. This shows you right away that he is confused about what to feel. He continues this part of the speech with “Must I remember...by what it fed on” which indicates that he is seeing his mother lose independence and become reliant on his uncle. This creates a dilemma in which Hamlet no longer has his mother to depend on because she is no longer independent or strong. The next part “Let me... name is women” proves that his mother's lack of dependence gives him a negative view of women. He is calling women weak because of the weakness his mother has displayed. He no longer has a prime example of what a strong woman looks life. Hamlet only goes on to further point out the neglect and disappointment he is feeling from his mother. He does this in the lines “A little month... married with my uncle”. This is the point of the speech where he really goes into depth on his feelings of the remarriage between his uncle and mother. He says that his mother mourned less than a beast would with it’s mate. He goes as far as to say that when his mother was mourning with visible tears at his father’s funeral it was fake and that she hadn’t even waited for the shoes to break in before she remarried. Hamlet is thoroughly displaying his disappointment at this point. He is in despair with the outcome of remarriage. He is hit with the strange reality that he is the only one still grieving over the death of his father, the king of Denmark. This leads him to feel neglected because he is grieving and no one is with him. He continues stating his disappointment with the next lines “My father’s brother... incestuous sheets”. In this part he uses the imagery of his lack of similarity to hercules to draw attention to how he is feeling about how distanced he feels from his uncle. Claudius may have been his father’s brother but holds no fatherly affection in the eyes of hamlet. His final end to the speech with the lines “It is not... hold my tongue” show further signs of neglect. He has no one to tell his disagreements to. He can not tell his mother for she is dependent on his uncle whose is the one that stole her independence. She has torn the bond between her and hamlet by forgetting his father so quickly. He is left to store these feelings, his disappointment and confusion, inside himself. This is enough to drive anyone mad through neglect.

Antes de que la unidad, no sabía mucho sobre Hugo Chávez. He visto en las noticias una vez. Sin embargo, yo sabía muy poco sobre de él. Esta unidad me ayudan a entender el punto de vista de la oposición y los chavistas. No me gusta Hugo Chávez porque él trata la gente de Venezuela horrible. Él es un hombre muy egoísta. También Hugo Chávez tiene muchos rasgos de un dictador.

“Mi Mural del Amor” - Taylor Thomas
Mi nombre es Taylor y vivo en la ciudad de Filadelfia. La parte de Filadelfia donde vivo en es Roxborough. La historia de Roxborough es muy interesante. Roxborough era una ciudad en la ciudad por hombres ricos que eran dueños de ingenios. Los hombres construir enormes edificios para las mujeres mayores. Los hombres construir los edificios de la avenida del canto. Este nombre procede de la cresta de Schuylkill río y el arroyo Wissahickon. Roxborough y Manayunk se separan de la ciudad debido a la cala. En Roxborough hoy, mucha gente de mi edad, dieciséis, tienen novios y novias. Si usted es un niño y no juega un deporte que no tiene una novia. Si eres una chica y no ponge maquillaje en y viste bien o no tienes un novio. Para ser aceptado en Roxborough ayuda tener un novio o novia. Esto demuestra la historia, porque los hombres tenían algo que hacer por las mujeres en su vida.
El arte es la expresión. Permite que otras personas sepan cómo se siente alguien. Se trata de mostrar tus sentimientos lo que sientes sin palabras. Mi mural es arte porque muestra lo que creo que es mi barrio. Expresa lo que siento. El papel del arte público es expresar cómo se siente una persona sobre un tema público. Muchas personas no piensan que el arte de la calle es arte. La gente piensa que es solamente vandalismo. Creo que es mucho más. Está diciendo a la gente que lo ve que se trata de un comunicado. Las personas que no les gusta el arte de la calle no sabe cómo se lo agradezco.

Mi mural muestra muchas cosas de mi barrio. Hay muchas relaciones estereotipadas. Los niños que practican deportes de salir con mujeres hermosas y populares. Mi mural tiene un lado con los atletas varones. El otro lado tiene mujeres hermosas. El centro cuenta con una línea de corazones. Los corazones representan el amor. Los niños y niñas representan las personas en las relaciones. La historia detrás de mi mural tiene que ver con los hombres ricos que se construyen grandes casas para sus mujeres. Deportes solía ser algo en lo que sólo los ricos podían participar. Los hombres ricos fecha las mujeres bonitas. Ha elegido el color era azul para el fondo. Esto representaba las fábricas en las que trabajaban los hombres ricos. el mensaje que estoy tratando de comunicar es que Roxborough es muy tradicional. No ha cambiado mucho entre hombres y mujeres ya que los hombres ricos que eran dueños de las fábricas.

Mi obra de arte debe ser considerado arte debido a la historia y el significado de la obra. No creo sin embargo muchas personas se consideran arte. Yo no creo que lo consideraría arte porque no es fácil ver el significado de inmediato. Mi opinión sobre mi obra es extraño. Creo que sería mejor si yo tenía fotos de los molinos, o utilizar un método diferente de arte. Yo podría haberlo dibujado o pintado, pero las revistas eran más disponible. Me gusta la parte del trabajo que tengo. Estoy orgulloso del mural.

​ Mi nombre es Bella. Tengo 14 años. Soy bastante deportista. Es pre que eso que yo juego basketball, softball, y soccer. Soy súper boba. Por lo tanta yo me gusta bailo. Me encanta como y duermo.
Mi amiga Srt. Manuel. Teien 48 años. Ella es muy trabajorda. ES por que le gust escribe y estudia.

Antes de esta unidad, no sabía quién era Chávez. Pensé que era una persona muy importante, que él es. Sin embargo, parece que la gente lo odiaba. Sinceramente he no tenido ninguna pista acerca de él. Pero a medida que aprendemos más acerca de él, saber que él es un hombre malo para aumentar el hambre y la pobreza. Esto me hace no como él porque si eres Presidente de un país, no debe dejar que su país entra hambre. Es decir, creo que Chavista sería un mejor Presidente, pero vamos a ver qué pasa.
