For my senior capstone I was inspired to design Moroccan Takchitas that are shown below in order to display the talent I have not only in art but in design as a whole. I also decided to do this in order to share my culture with the SLA community and educate students who have little knowledge about Northern African fashion that is mainly based on tradition.

I took many steps over the past few months to complete this project of course, because there are many steps to put this all together. This project required lots of time and thought. In order to do this I needed to brainstorm my thoughts first then I need to create my templates and sketch out my dresses. After that I needed to outline everything with black and then begin designing. Lastly, I needed to put in the color and accessories. After that, I had to completed all of those steps I need to begin planning how I will put together my slides to show my process. To put all of those steps together I included the real life examples as well when presenting. Throughout this process, I also met up with with Moroccan women and classmates for input and advice on my designs. My grandmother and my aunt were my biggest inspirations during this time, not only because of the huge amount of assistance they provided but also because they passed on their love for our culture and fashion onto me. I am delighted to say that I am proud to continue this family traditional talent.

Sean DeSilva Capstone

Procrastinating is something that we all do from time to time. Whether it’s everyday, once every so week or on very rare occasions, it gets the best of us sometimes. For my Capstone, I interviewed 40 SLA students and their stance on procrastination. I wanted a good demographic of students, so interviewing 5 male and 5 female from each grade was the best option. I asked them several questions that pertained to their prior background in education, their current work ethic and their current sense of organization.

This has helped me and the interviewees get a better grip on what we’re doing when we’re at school. From my findings, we often procrastinate because… we can afford to postpone things. From small homework assignments to benchmarks or other school assignments… We procrastinate due to the main fact that we can afford to complete it later on. My interviews also often interested me in the psychology procrastination. I read many articles that talked about human tactics when it comes to accomplishing something. For example, I read how we use avoidance to cope with our emotions. Conducting my Capstone has led me to come to many conclusions on work ethic, environment and overall mindsets.

When I first came across this source, I thought it had an interesting approach to talking about procrastination. However, this source has expressed the idea of why we procrastinate in a very descriptive manner. It talks about the idea of the, “Money Mind,” which I most definitely want to include in my presentation. I believe that so far, this source has been the best in being able to convey new information to me and very interesting ideas. I genuinely felt that this was a fun read.

  1. "Procrastination: A Brief Guide on How to Stop Procrastinating." James Clear. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://jamesclear.com/procrastination.

Reviewing this source, it talks about how we as individuals can stop procrastination. It also gives various ways of working around procrastination. This source has been very in depth, providing us with graphs and amazing analysis. I might use some of the graphs provided here in my own presentation or I might make my own graphs to relate to the findings in my capstone.

  1. "Procrastination" Psychology Today Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/procrastination.

This source has been quite interesting as it talks about setting goals for yourself and taking control of your time. I believe that having goals set for yourself each day is quite important for you to retain your motivation. Since motivation is also a key factor in weather people procrastinate or not. The feeling of accomplishment can also be present once those goals are fulfilled even if they are small goals. This source did talk about things I already knew but it was good to have this source to kind of reinforce my initial ideas.

  1. Jaffe, Eric. "Why Wait? The Science Behind Procrastination." Association for Psychological Science. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.psychologicalscience.org/observer/why-wait-the-science-behind-procrastination.

This article talks about how everyone has procrastinated at least once and there are some that still do. However, not everyone is a procrastinator. There are some people that do so from time to time, others not so much. While some individuals do to it quite often. The article also opens up with a humorous statement. That statement being, “Believe it or not, the Internet did not give rise to procrastination.” I thought it was nice how this article opened up and gave me inspiration to have a humorous opening to my own capstone once I have finalized everything.

  1. Manktelow, James. "How Can I Stop Procrastinating'Overcoming the Habit of Delaying Important Tasks." Management Training and Leadership Training - Online. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newHTE_96.htm.

This source has been able to convey the idea of being able to recognize yourself. I feel that I should be able to make this point in my presentation. Being able to recognize yourself is the most important thing in progressing as a person. That would be a good idea for me to be able to express in my presentation.

  1. Cherry, Kendra. "The Psychology Behind Why We Wait Until the Last Minute to Do Things." Verywell Mind. Last modified December 24, 2012. https://www.verywellmind.com/the-psychology-of-procrastination-2795944.

This article talks about why we individuals wait until the last minute to do certain tasks. It includes numerical values which I think are important when wanting to express certain ideas. I believe that by using numerical values, it can make ideas a lot more compelling and understandable. I think that it would be beneficial for me to use numerical values to provide clarity to my audience.

  1. "Case Study: Procrastination." SoundCloud. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://soundcloud.com/your-daily-drive/case-study-procrastination.

This soundcloud podcast has been very interesting to observe. It talks about how a grown women procrastinates on certain things which also affects her personal life along with her marriage. I believe that if procrastination is affecting someone's life that much, they should take initiative to prevent it from harming them further. This podcast expresses that.

  1. Jones, Orion. "Procrastination Is a Strong Emotional Coping Mechanism." Big Think. Last modified January 25, 2019. https://bigthink.com/ideafeed/procrastination-is-strong-emotional-coping-mechanism.

Coping with certain things is a natural human tactic. However, this article takes a psychological approach. The article brings up the idea that people use avoidance to cope with their emotions.

9. Locke, Susannah. "Why Your Brain Loves Procrastination." Vox. Last modified April 18, 2016. https://www.vox.com/2014/12/8/7352833/procrastination-psychology-help-stop.

This article talks about the brain and why it ‘loves’ to procrastinate. I believe that it is the idea of false sense of comfort that allows us to procrastinate. It makes our brains think that we’re in a okay spot. I think that I should incorporate this idea in my capstone, since I can personally relate to this finding.

      10. Pychyl, Tim. "Procrastination A Misplaced Coping Mechanism, Says Psychologists." Denver News, Weather, Sports From CBS Channel 4 – CBS Denver. Last modified December 22, 2016. https://denver.cbslocal.com/2016/12/22/procrastination-study/."Procrastination A Misplaced Coping Mechanism, Says Psychologists." Denver News, Weather, Sports From CBS Channel 4 – CBS Denver. Last modified December 22, 2016.

This source has conveyed the idea of procrastination being a coping mechanism. Another source that talks about the idea of coping with procrastination as it’s in our brains to do so. The title of this article was also quite interesting, since it defines procrastination as a misplaced coping mechanism. Which I can believe can be used in my presentation. Initially I thought that I was going to simply talk about my own personal experience of procrastination and the interviews I’ve conducted. However, after viewing all these resources, I believe that I am able to incorporate a deeper meaning in this capstone.

Abstract

How can you incorporate technology into modern day learning to make it both more interesting and accessible?

The internet has become the first point of contact for many people when they have a question. Our computers and mobile devices have given us access to so much information with a simple search. Technology has been incorporated over the years in schools all around the world to improve the quality of learning in classrooms. Although public school education is available to everyone in the United States, many inner-city schools, especially in the Philadelphia area where I grew up, are underfunded and understaffed. In addition, it is rare for them to provide education in highly-technical STEM fields, which are generally where the high paying jobs are.

I want to make education, especially in technical fields, more accessible to people around the world. I had the luxury of having an engineering program in my high school, which not many schools in my area have.

After many hours of research, meetings with my mentor, weekends spent filming, and countless days staying after school editing, I have finally created a dedicated YouTube channel featuring a series of videos sharing what I've learned over the years in my engineering program.

For my capstone, I worked with the Audubon Society to remove invasive plant species from around the reservoir. That didn't go well as most things were dead already. Instead, I found an app that allowed me to track the different trees around the reservoir. On the days when I was not able to go outside, I worked inside to create my website and do the research needed. As winter ended and it started to get warmer I began with the pullings. I would pull for about an hour or so when the weather was nice. When it wasn't I would be inside continuing my research.

It also includes why it is helpful to have native species and the means needed to plant native plants at home. I will use this site to help me determine which plants I should plant in the spring.

Christina Santana Capstone

For my senior capstone I created an after school club that introduced students from various areas of the city to different topics pertaining to STEM. The purpose of this club was to expose students to the opportunities that the field of STEM has to offer and to introduce more female students to the field as a whole. I had initially begun my capstone by speaking with school officials from my middle school to confirm that I would be able to use it as the site for my club. While our first meeting had gone successfully, the school’s lack of keeping up with communication and inability to confirm a club dates after our first meeting caused me to go back to square one.

When coming up with possible solutions that would fix the challenges I faced, I determined that it would be in my best interest to turn the club into something that was portable and relevant to a wide range of ages. This would allow me to be able to broaden the spectrum of people that I taught and it ensured that I would not have to rely on one specific group of people. Ultimately, this process taught me that every challenge, no matter how hard it may seem, has a feasible solution. It just takes some time and well thought out brainstorming to come up with the right idea. When reflecting on what I was able to accomplish, I was able to have thorough club meetings with students ranging from the grades of 1st to 12th grade, and I completed various activities with them that were inspired by activities I come across during my time as a student at SLA.

“10 Simple STEM Activities for Kids That Will Stimulate Young Minds.” Rasmussen College - Regionally Accredited College Online and on Campus. www.rasmussen.edu/degrees/education/blog/simple-stem-activities-for-kids/.

This website from Rasmussen College lists 10 STEM related activities that are meant to stimulate the minds of adolescents. I will use this list to choose and find the activities that I want the students to complete during my club. Using this list ensures that all of the activities are STEM-related and relevant to the topic I choose to teach the students every week. Overall, this source is relevant to my project because it allows me to plan out my club beforehand while also providing me with a list of materials that I need to fundraise for and obtain beforehand.

“36 Resources for STEM Project-Based Learning Activities.” Global Digital Citizen Foundation, Global Digital Citizen Foundation, 20 July 2018,

http://globaldigitalcitizen.org/36-stem-project-based-learning-activities

I will use this website from the Global Digital Citizen Foundation in conjunction with the list of activities that I obtained from my Rasmussen College source. I am utilizing both sources because I want to have a wide variety of activities to choose from and present to the students since I plan for them to be involved in the activity selection process. The activities in this source specifically are split up by categories such as engineering, mathematics, and general STEM. Each category has a variety of activities (that are split up by specific age groups) listed under them so that will be a useful element to use when catering activities to specific grades. Overall, this source will be used to help craft the lesson plans and activities necessary for my club/capstone.

Dispatch. “Is STEM Education Beneficial in the Elementary Classroom?” Center for Health Identity Behavior and Prevention Studies CHIBPS, 14 May 2018, https://wp.nyu.edu/dispatch/2018/01/30/is-stem-education-beneficial-in-the-elementary-classroom/

This website from the Center for Health Identity Behavior and Prevention Studies (CHIBPS) at New York University (NYU) debates whether or not STEM education is beneficial for students in elementary school. In their article on the topic, they begin by giving an overview of STEM, what it is, and it’s importance in society. They then explain their reasonings for why they think teaching STEM is extremely important in elementary schools, and they end their article by speaking about the need for gender diversity in the field. I will use this source to corroborate my justification behind my capstone impact.

“How to Write a Lesson Plan.” Homeschooling vs Public Schools: The Pros and Cons of Homeschooling, www.middleschool.net/write-lesson-plan.htm.

This website from Middleschool.net provides a detailed outline of how teachers should go about creating their lesson plans. On the site, it lists ten detailed steps to follow when creating a lesson plan, and it has a condensed list of other resources to use as a reference listed at the bottom of the page. I will utilize this source religiously when creating my lesson plans because it proves useful and beneficial advice. It will make this process much easier when it comes to creating my content. Overall, this source will be used to create the lesson plans for each week of my club.

“Importance of STEM Education in Elementary School | College of Education - FSU.” FSU College of Education, 10 Jan. 2019, https://education.fsu.edu/importance-stem-education-elementary-school

This website from the Florida State University College of Education provides their reasonings as to why they stress the importance of STEM education in elementary schools. In this source, they address how America has fallen behind other industrialized countries in terms of STEM-related fields and they make the case that a STEM-focused education not only opens students to new subjects but it also allows for different learning methodologies to be utilized. I will use this source to prove the benefit and long-lasting impact of my capstone. The skills the students will learn in the club are skills that will stick with them forever.

O'Malley, Oscar, et al. “The Benefits of STEM in Elementary.” STEAM Powered Family, 8 Oct. 2018, www.steampoweredfamily.com/education/stem-in-elementary/.

This website from is one out of three sources that I have relating to the impact/importance of my project. In this source, they explain that learning should be both influential and engaging. Saying that “If an education destroys a student’s love of learning, then it has failed.” This quote truly resonated with me because it couldn't be more true. Students should love what and how they’re learning. They should feel that it’s been catered to them with the intention of meeting their best interest. That’s the intention of my club, thus explaining why I am choosing to integrate this source into my capstone.

“Science Leadership Academy: What Will You Create Today?” NGLC, www.nextgenlearning.org/articles/science-leadership-academy-what-will-you-create-today.

This article from the Next Gen Learning Center is a deep dive into SLA and the uniqueness of our curriculum. It analyzes our core values, capstone projects, and ILPs while explaining the importance that they all have to our students and the school community as a whole. I will use this source to compare how the set up of our curriculum is emulated in the set up for my club in addition to using it as a resource for my students to become familiar with before the club begins. I want them to have adequate context on who I am (this will be a self-summary) and where I’m coming from (based on the article). This article will help me provide them with that information.

“Setting up Your Club.” Keys Steps for Setting up Your out of School Club | Out of School Alliance, www.outofschoolalliance.co.uk/setting-up-your-club.

This website from the Out of School Alliance provides a list of tips and tricks to use when creating an after-school club. It goes over the keys aspects necessary to have a productive and efficient club. Examples of these aspects are business structure, paperwork, and establishing the need. This source is essential when it comes to structuring my club because it will help me stay organized while also giving me experience in the field of business (which is what I will be majoring in in college).  I will use it in conjunction with my source about writing lesson plans. Overall, this is source will help me with the managerial and teacher like aspects of my Capstone.

“Start Your Child's Academic Adventure.” Archdiocese of Philadelphia Schools History Comments, www.aopcatholicschools.org/elementary-schools/curriculum/.

This website for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia lists all of the mandatory courses to be taught in Catholic Schools for every subject. The curriculum for each subject is divided into folders that are then split up into grades (such as Kindergarten and 8th Grade). I will use this source to analyze the curriculum that middle schoolers (5th-8th) are required to take, and I will then use it as the base for my capstone. I intend to build off of what the students already know while also teaching them new content, so the purpose of this source will be to make sure that I’m meeting those standards.

“Visitation BVM School.” Icon of Visitation Church, www.vizobvm.org/.

This website for the Visitation BVM School provides background information on and important notes about the school where I will be completing my Senior Capstone. My purpose for using this source is to compare the schools objective and educational priorities to that of my STEM club since I intend to combine the two equally. In addition to the comparison, this source will also give me a better look at the demographics of my club in terms of racial and gender diversity. This will be a critical piece in graphing and creating infographics for my club. Overall, I will use all of this information in conjunction with my source that pertains to the mandatory curriculum that is taught in all Archdiocesan schools in Philadelphia.

Nzinga Suluki-Bey Capstone

I wanted to create a capstone that would stay with the SLA community even after I left. After that idea I talked to college counselor, Mrs. Hirschfield. We concluded that the website should be more accessible and visually appealing. I built upon the freshman and sophomore page because the college process shouldn’t start Junior year. After going through what was needed and what needed to be fixed on the old website I made a template that would bring all of my and Mrs. Hirshfield’s ideas together. While making the template I also sent out a survey to understand how the student body felt about the current website and where they wanted it to improve. Most of the students said that the website wasn’t appealing and they could never find anything. They students gave great praise to the content, but also thought that as a freshman they didn’t think the website was for them. The website also has the bulletins in order by date and you can see all of them at once instead of scrolling through a document. Their is a full page of test prep and how to link college board and khan academy. There are videos of seniors going over their college process so that students know what they are headed for their senior year. There’s a video on the homepage that goes over how to navigate the website and if someone is looking for something how to find it. I learned that with this website the college process won’t be that hard.

“5 Questions To Help You Design an Effective College Website.” Verified Studios, 8 Feb. 2017, www.verifiedstudios.com/effective-college-website/. This article is more about the tech of a website and if it’s marketable. This resource gives a lot of background on how to make your brand create a web presence. It goes in depth with asking the person questions and if this strategy might work for them. For example 47% of people click off a website that takes too long. If websites don’t work well on social media or isn’t presentable on other devices most teens won’t go on it. A website must also have good visuals because most teens don’t read. The article goes over good design. How does your website break up code and how does it go over the information a person is seeking? This a helpful tool for my capstone because it lets me understand how I can improve the design of the current website.

Dix, Willard. “10 Ways To Make The College Application Process Less Painful, More Successful.” Forbes, Forbes Magazine, 9 Feb. 2016, www.forbes.com/sites/willarddix/2016/02/09/on-your-marks-get-set/#7dbf12557c70. This article goes over the stress of what college does to students and how parents can distress their children. It goes over the process of actually applying to how to not put all the money obligations on the student. This article is specifically for adults. You can see that by how it is directed at what people could say or do and how other adults or parents should refrain from asking about majors and not speaking for you student/child. The first two suggestions are for parents and their students. The article unlike most college processes don’t mention the counselor. Your counselor is your allie and your shield from everything. A lot of people also forget about recommendations although they could save an application. This article will help finalize the content and what should or shouldn’t be stressed in a person’s college process.

“Helping Your Teen Decide What to Do After High School (for Parents).” Edited by Steven Dowshen, KidsHealth, The Nemours Foundation, June 2018, kidshealth.org/en/parents/after-hs.html. Kids Health is a popular website that most adults use for children and then a lot of high school students use the website to help break down certain topics. This particular article talks about how efficient students need to be before junior year. It used to be that students could look for schools a few months before senior year or during senior year. Now schools are harder and they want more than just grades. This article talks more directly about the process of finding schools or what we call “best fit”. Fit means economically, academically and socially. The colleges could mean all three of students and parents likings or some could meet just two. This article breaks down what students need to do and how far in advance. It gives an intro course almost into Sophomore and Junior year. This article will be more of a background on what students need. In my capstone it will not be anything big since I have the resources that go over this topic.

Hess, Abigail. “The FAFSA Is Now Open-Here’s Why Every Student Should Fill It Out.” CNBC, CNBC, 2 Oct. 2018, www.cnbc.com/2017/09/28/why-every-student-should-fill-out-the-fafsa.html. This article from CNBC goes over why students of every economical background should fill out FAFSA. FAFSA is a way colleges and universities know how much financial aid to give a student and certain students are eligible for what is called a pell grant. A Pell Grant is given to people who make under $30,000 a year. CNBC brings up the fact that people who make a lot of money may not want to apply because they will only receive loans, but the contonter argument is that child can be independent and receive money next year. The FAFSA is a universal financial aid that many students don’t want to fill out, but most schools require that you do. With my capstone I hope to make this very apparent and explain FAFSA in a more detailed way and lay out a students many options.

Hirschfield, Karina. Personal Interview. 23 January 2019 Ms. Hirschfield is a college counselor with Science Leadership Academy. She is currently the only college counselor of Philadelphia that has a CAL Program or College Access Leaders. Ms. Hirschfield will help with my website for the college magazine.

“Home.” PhillyGoes2College.Org, phillygoes2college.org/. “Philly Goes 2 College” is another nonprofit in Philadelphia that helps middle school, high school, and adults with higher education/learning. This website breaks down a lot of the necessary tools for the college process. It gives information on financial aid, conversations about which college to choose, how to find money outside of what schools can give and they break everything down by grade. This site is visually appealing and you can find everything easily. This website also has scholarships which allows parents to use this site for their high school student who is less fortunate. I will use this source has reference for my website and magazine. The content is strong, but more geared towards adults.

Hoover, Eric. “What They Want .” The New York Times, 1 Nov. 2017, www.nytimes.com/2017/11/01/education/edlife/what-college-admissions-wants.html. The New York Times wrote an article on what colleges want. It isn’t a spelled out of each college in America, but it goes over key points and how times are changing. The overarching information is that colleges no longer want the student with the highests test-scores or the biggest gpa. Colleges and universities want a well-rounded individual that cannot just add to their community, but also set their school up for success. Each new freshmen admitted is a person who can market their school. If a student isn’t a good representation of the school you probably shouldn’t be there. This article also pinpoints that the college process is insensitive. If you aren’t the student their looking for then that isn’t the school for you. The article does a deep dive into how colleges are trying to go beyond the classroom to find the perfect student by adding different requirements on their college admissions materials. Some schools are allowing portfolios to see if students are good presenters. This article gives me a good insight into the application process which could add a lot to any website or magazine on the college process.

Mayfield, Lindsey, and Julie Mayfield. “7 Tips To Make a College Decision as a Family.” U.S. News & World Report, U.S. News & World Report, www.usnews.com/education/blogs/twice-the-college-advice/2012/03/13/7-tips-to-make-a-college-decision-as-a-family. The US News is a good source for the college process, but this blog specifically talks about the decision of choosing the place you live for four years. Every college is different and this article directly says “There is probably more than one school at which you can thrive.” This a very important thing that most seniors don’t realise. This article goes on to say that seniors must beware that you have to eat, sleep and communicate at the school you go to. The article breaks down choosing a school from a money perspective that no matter your circumstance the amount of aid you receive is an input into your school choice. The current magazine on the college process goes over a list for choosing the best school. The thing that needs to be improved is in this article; it needs to be for students and students have to relate to it. They don’t want a whole bunch of questions they won’t someone to spell things out for them. I’m specifically going to use this resource to help students choose a school through the website and magazine I am doing.

Selingo, Jeffrey. “Colleges Are Tracking Prospective Students’ Digital Footprints.” The Atlantic, Atlantic Media Company, 17 Apr. 2017, www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2017/04/how-colleges-find-their-students/522516/. This article gave an insight into what most colleges/universities are looking for. The article first follows Saint Louis University which had a demographic that wasn’t very diverse and they all came from the same area. The reason a lot of schools are trying to broaden their demographics is because their graduation rates are decreasing. A colleges graduation rate is very important because it shows the type of students that go their. This article specifically went over how a school like Saint Louis increased their graduation rate and a broader demographic by buying from big data or high school students. A lot colleges get 40% of their information from SAT’s and ACT test when students feel out surveys about majors and different schools. This data allowed schools to know which students they want and which students they need. A lot of schools used this data and now have 20% of students who are eligible for pell grants which means more colleges or universities accept students who make less than $30,000 a year. This information from this article would most likely go on the website I will create because it will give an insight into a college mind and how they market to students. This also allows high school students to know that colleges are look at you when they send you marketable things or even emails.

“Step Up to College.” Home - Philadelphia Futures, www.philadelphiafutures.org/publications/step-up-to-college-guide. The Philadelphia Futures is a nonprofit organization in Philadelphia that has a college process magazine called “Step Up to College.” This source will help me better understand the college process on an educational level other than a personal. I can use resources and explanations on their website for my college process magazine. This source also gives me insight into what high school students want in a magazine and on a website and what is beneficial to donors and adults.

Amelia Benamara Capstone

For my senior capstone, I decided to focus on the overall high school experience for students. During the process of deciding on a topic, I asked myself what can I provide for the future students of the SLA community based on my four-year experience. Helping others has always been a huge passion of mine, so this was a fantastic idea. I created a short documentary posted you YouTube -- almost like a how to survive high school survival guide -- that highlights the high school experience as a whole amongst many different students, mostly including seniors since they've had the most experience. This short documentary focuses on many serious topics which include mental health, managing a job, social life, time management, what it's like attending a project-based school, relationships, sports, and college. This 'How To Survive High School' Documentary also features many students who give incoming underclassmen specific advice on many different topics that I hope they learn from. Not only does this piece sharpen the idea of high school for the students who enter it, but it also centers on specifically what the Science Leadership Academy community has to offer for its learners. As many people are aware of, SLA is different from many other Philadelphia High schools and with this video, incoming freshmen would have a better idea at what such a unique high school SLA is.

Not only does this source review the importance of activities amongst adults and students,

but it also gives examples of potential games and activities that a community can participate in such as the football toss and balloon down. It is very helpful in terms of what students, especially teens, need to build community and confidence within themselves. Bringing forth students in a community to especially reflect on their experiences increases their happiness

Community, and Why Is It Important?" The Ikeda Center for Peace, Learning & Dialogue | Cambridge, MA. 2005. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.ikedacenter.org/thinkers-themes/themes/community/what-is-community-responses.

The source provides adequate examples of ways to build a community and be a healthy aspect of uniting people together in any form. This adds to the purpose of having the senior class of 2019 come together during the final months of high school to compete against one another in a fun, energy building way. Riché C. Zamor, Executive Director, Professional Services Division Latin American Health Institute summarizes the purpose of having a community and constantly attempting to build the bond stronger amongst one another. This, again, brings a bigger purpose for this project, especially as a graduating class.

"5 Helpful Tips to Calm 9th Grade Nerves." CollegeVine. April 12, 2019. https://blog.collegevine.com/5-helpful-tips-to-calm-9th-grade-nerves/.

The way this website is helpful is because I wanted to begin this project solely based on how nervous my younger brother was about going to high school as a freshman. He was very frightful about managing vigorous high school work and most importantly the freshman year transition. Based on this source, tips are given to middle schoolers who are soon to enter High School which enhanced a few of the pieces of advice included in my documentary.

"Starting High School (for Teens)." KidsHealth. August 2018. https://kidshealth.org/en/teens/starting-high-school.html.

This source focuses on relieving stress in students who are going into High School. This is important to include in this bibliography and in my research as a whole because the message that I want to put out in my documentary is not to stress about things school but rather to look at school as an environment where you can seek help at the same time have fun and make the memories that you will remember years later. Many younger classmen, especially freshman, have the wrong idea going into high school -- that is a false claim and I want to change as many students’ mindsets as a whole through this short documentary.

Much like the other sources listed above, this website gives more tips -- a little more than other sites do -- on how to relieve stress and become for entering High School. This also has positive feedback on what high school has to offer in general if you make the best of it. It also highlights how common it is to be anxious about going to high school, and with good reason. It is also important to consider that here it is said that seniors, while they seem confident now, were all in those similar shoes once before.

"High School and College Student Anxiety: Why the Epidemic?" Psychology Today. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/resolution-not-conflict/201806/high-school-and-college-student-anxiety-why-the-epidemic.

Throughout this source, information and statistics about high school anxiety are included which makes my argument stronger that students who are entering High School have anxiety as well due to this very cause. Knowing that High School gives you anxiety doesn't get you excited to start and that new environment for that very reason. This also makes my initial reasoning stronger because many kids need the message to be delivered to them that high school is not scary and it is what you make it so going into Highschool with a better and positive attitude will give you better results.

"Login." TeenInk. http://www.teenink.com/opinion/school_college/article/304164/What-High-School-is-All-About/.

Here, Teen Ink explores the idea of the meaning of high school in general in a positive attitude.  As most other sources have proven a lot of students carry on the anxiety of entering High School due to a large amount of stress. However, this source gives adequate feedback on how to avoid bumping heads with stress, especially when I needed to in high school. This website also gives students the confidence of making high school what you want it to be, which is what many students failed to do when starting their journey. This also helps me obtain ideas on how to deliver these important messages to a younger group of children

When I reviewed this article, I obtained the simple knowledge of things someone can do to bring a community together, especially in setting such as a school. Although specific activities were not mentioned, this source speaks about the importance of organizing events that will bring people together in any form. This adds more meaning to the inquiry questions I proposed to why an event like this should occur, uniting the class of 2019 through any type of activity, especially activities where reflections are included. This piece also stresses the core value of collaboration where it wise to use the resources around you, such as different organizations and teams to plan the events in mind.

Fran Smith summarizes the importance of SLA and focuses on the core values that Center around the SLA Community which is a big part of the project that I'm planning to organize in March for the senior class of 2019.  This source is organized in a question-and-answer based style which allows the readers to understand much more about the SLA perspective on projects, events, and student life. Focusing on the main purpose of SLA, even around when it first opened, gives me a direction to go because it separates what I am supposed to focus when it comes to the student body.

For my capstone, I launched the site for a webcomic, entitled “Moonfall”. Moonfall is a long-form adventure comic spanning multiple chapters with individual pages posted one-per-week (Friday nights). The scope of the comic is absolutely massive and I plan to continue posting pages through college and after until it’s complete, but I wanted to use this opportunity to get it started. I plan on using this comic, its fantasy setting, and its enormous cast of characters to explore many different themes such as mental health, friendship, classism, multi-cultural society, progressivism, violence, psychological dependence, gang mentality, nihilism, and many more (so many more…). Throughout this process, I’ve learned how to implement these themes through research and practice, and I will continue to do so until the story concludes.

In SLA I have seen teacher in  almost every class find a way to use film in the curriculum. Film can serve as a way to make a concept more accessible and fun to engage in for students. I took this as inspiration and decided to design an 8 week mini course called “Netflix and Learn” where I showed different types of media that taught about certain sorts of history. I pulled from some of my favorite pieces of art like  Billy Joel's “We Didn’t Start to Fire” and “The Untouchables”. I was able to assess what the kids already knew about the topics by giving them a mini quiz before we watched and then asking them the same questions after we were done. I really took for granted how much the students knew a about certain subject and I feel like they really learned from the classes. So often student get a bird eyes view of how world events affected countries but these movies and tv shows showed them from a regular person's perspective. The fact that the media also had some elements of comedy and drama,  the students were able to stay engaged in the content. The last skill that I wanted to teach them was how to fact check these movies that we watch because some of them dramatized certain events for hollywood appeal but were then factually incorrect. I think that I sufficiently passed in making them well rounded critical thinkers when is comes to historical media.

Annotated Bibliography

  1. Crockett , Ross. “Movies in the Classroom: Teaching History With Film.” Global Digital Citizen Foundation, Global Digital Citizen Foundation, 26 June 2018, globaldigitalcitizen.org/teaching-history-with-film.

This source was written by a teacher who wanted to show that scientifically is has been proven that student retain more information when they were presented in the form of a movie. She also talks about how much she has learned as a teacher. She stated, “Watching the films did clearly help the students learn more, but only when the information was the same in both text and film…But when the information in the film and the reading were contradictory — that is, when the film was inaccurate — the students were more likely to recall the film’s distorted version.” So in contrary to other articles she says that is it actually ok when movies have historical inaccuracies because it makes the students ask more questions and think deeper.

  1. Everding, Gerry. “Historical Movies Help Students Learn, but Separating Fact from Fiction Can Be Challenge | The Source | Washington University in St. Louis.” The Source, 13 Jan. 2016, source.wustl.edu/2009/08/historical-movies-help-students-learn-but-separating-fact-from-fiction-can-be-challenge/.

    1. This source is a educational article written by a professor at Washington University in St. Louis, Gerry Everding. This was published in 2009 and it chronicles his experience in trying to teach student to use movies to learn historical event. He thought that this way of learning would be fool proof but then he saw the children were not retaining information. He said, “In contrast, when information in the film directly contradicted the text, people often falsely recalled the misinformation portrayed in the film, sometimes as much as 50 percent of the time.” This means that there need to be a more comprehensive way to separate fact from fiction so that student know what information is true and what they should remember.

  2. Hughes-Warrington, Marnie. History Goes to the Movies: Studying History on Film. Routledge, 2009.

    1. “Can films be used as historical evidence? Do historical films make good or bad history? Are documentaries more useful to historians than historical drama?” These are the essential driving question that Hughes-Warrington wanted to answer in her book History Goes to the Movies. The ting satta makes this citation different from the other ones that I have used is that she tried to take an intereantil view on this query. Movies from other countries on their own countries and how they portray themselves and how American pre trays other countries and their history. This makes me question some of the pieces of media that I have chosen for my project because I only have American perspectives from the late 20th century. I may need to proden the counties or even the eras that I will use.

  3. Masterman, Len. Teaching the Media . 1985.

    1. This source was a book written by a man who felt at there needed to be more guidelines for comprehensive medei that can teach people things like history and science. The chapter that I read focused privatization of information. He stated that many companies and organization are starting to move more quietly there fore less and less content about them will be coming to light. It is now up to us to do the hard research and compile accurate information and then put it into form or media that children can understand and that will be most beneficial to them.

    1. This source is an essay that was written by a woman named Kathleen Murray in order to inform people about how media portrays women and what need to change about it. I specifically focused on reading a section that she wrote called “Woman’s Picture: The romance and the weepie”. In this she talks about the stereotypes that are put on women in various movies like Fargo and other horror movies. She states, The way that looking is thematized in the horror film and the relationship between the hunter and the hunted makes it critical to understanding the investigating woman. The shift from active investigator to object of investigation, from the one who looks to the one who is looked upon is always threatening the female detective.” I saw this as an opportunity to think that not only can film be used to show history events, but that it can be a commentary on how people of certain gender, races, and classes are portrayed and how those parties are taking action against this.

  5. National Film Study Standards, National Film Study Standard , www.storyofmovies.org/national-film-study-standards.

    1. This website it a teaching resource published by the National Film Study Standards Association. The are an organization that you have to be a registered member of and they show teachers how to pick out important parts of movies to show students. What makes this source so good it that they have their information broken up into three categories, Basiuc, Intermediate, and Advanced. It tells teachers what to ask for from different level of student by the time that get to the college level that should have immense knowledge of information like film vovoplay, allegorical messages, and author and viewer bias. One example is how to connect film and history to culture. In the first level ,basic, student should be able to identify what time period the movies was made in and explain how it is different from today. In the last level, Advanced, student should be able to identify what propagande gods and marketing technique were popular then and ho that could affect the movies telling.

    1. This source has definitive steps on how to watch a movies as a critical thinker. The first step is to try to come into the movie with no biases. Try to put yourself in the mind of the time period and view it at face value. The next step is to take notes about what interest you and shocks you during the viewing. The third step is to analyze objects luke tone and cinematography and how it played a part in the film. The last step is to try to condense your feelings in to a comprehensive review that they can understand and want to learn.

  7. “Teaching Tutorials .” The Story of Movies , www.storyofmovies.org/teaching-strategies.

    1. This source was cited from a presentation from the company called The Story of Movies. In the presentation that document steps on how to effective leach Cibem Literacy. It states that in order to do this in the correct format you have to know lot of information about Film Study and Visual Literacy and then you must combine them. The method that they have “perfected” is known as the SOM Method. This method focuses on Composition, Pace and Continuity, Cinematography, and Soundtrack. It also states that teacher must acknowledge to students that films are combination of History, Literature, Art, Music, and STEM.

  8. Gerald Lesser (1972) Learning, Teaching, and Television Production for Children: The Experience of Sesame Street. Harvard Educational Review: July 1972, Vol. 42, No. 2, pp. 232-272.

    1. This source is a essay that was written by a man named Dr .Gerald Lesser who wanted to show how shows like Sesame Street has efficiently found the formula to teach kids important information that they retain. He served as chairman of the National Board of Advisors to the Children's Television Workshop. In this he talks about experimental tool that Sesame Street used in its beginning stages such as narrow focusing and cross model reinforcement. He also talks about how humor has played a big role in how children process the show and its success. The show uses sound clues that spike children's attention and allows them to recall letter that they have associated with these sounds.

  9. Zukas , Alex. “DIFFERENT DRUMMERS: USING MUSIC TO TEACH HISTORY.” Historian.org, 1 Sept. 1996,

    1. This website is resource for educators and socially music teachers. This specific article shows teacher how to use music to teach musical history. It asked the reader to try and imagine the world without music and how it has influenced history. Zukas makes an example of how things like Jazz can be used as an introduction into the lives and history of Louisiana and how certain types of Rock n Roll music can be credited towards England and the time period that they were going through. I will try to use some of the tactic that he has employed when Introduce “We Didn’t Start the Fire” by Billy Joel to the kids in my mini course.

Andrew Rodebaugh - Hackath.io

Project URL: https://hackath.io/hack19

Abstract:

My goal with my capstone was to find a way to make it more accessible to create and join hackathons. A traditional hackathon is a group of people going to a place coding for 24 hours. This model is a lot of fun but is not accessible to people that can’t get there or only have a couple of hours to spare. I decided that creating an online platform for hackathons would address all of these issues allowing more people to join. Over the first few months of school till March 15th I created a platform with my existing programming knowledge that allows for easy creation, running and monitoring of hackathons. I ran my own hackathon on March 15th-16th from 5 pm to 5 pm with the theme “How can we improve STEAM Education using code?” People could submit websites, apps, code, or presentations which explain the projects they did/wanted to create. I was able to get $175 worth of prizes from Braskem which allowed me to push more people to join. At the end of the day, 20 unique people visited my site but only 8 entered. Overall I learned a lot about creating large projects, time management, planning events and social media/online ad management. This project was stressful at times but was an overall rewarding experience.

“Angular Documentation.” Angular Docs, Google, angular.io/docs.

I rely heavily on this site for figuring out how to program the website. Angular is a web framework that allows me to quickly program interactive and dynamic user interfaces. This allows me to create profile pages, hackathon pages and other pages with only one template. The documentation allows me to see all of the different commands I can program, what they do and the different properties allowed in the function. I choose Angular over alternatives like Vue or React because it’s created by and used by Google so I know it is well optimized/trustworthy.

“Typescript Documentation.” TypeScript - JavaScript That Scales., Microsoft, www.typescriptlang.org/docs/home.html.

Developing Web Apps with Angular requires the use of the Microsoft’s compiler languages called Typescript. It allows complex object-oriented programming to be done in Javascript. So I write code in the Typescript syntax and then compile it down to Javascript to be readable by browsers. This documentation helped me learn what that syntax is and lets me quickly refer back to it if I forgot/broke something. I don’t use this as much as I use Angular Documentation but it kind of shows why Typescript is a great language because of how natural it is to Javascript programmers.

“Bulma Documentation.” Bulma: a Modern CSS Framework Based on Flexbox, bulma.io/documentation/.

For people to use a website it has to be functional and pretty. To make my job easier I am using a UI Components Framework for the web called Bulma. So now all I have to do is glue together buttons, navigation bars, textboxes and other components found on web sites to make a pretty User Interface.

“Adobe XD Tutorials.” Conceptos De Modos De Color En Photoshop, Adobe, helpx.adobe.com/xd/tutorials.html.

Adobe XD is one of the applications I used to create the User Interface prototype. This site includes some of the tutorials I used to learn the software and a reference I referred to when needing help. Adobe XD allows me to get a bunch of components I designed using Bulma/Affinity Designer and make them interactive. This helped me quickly turn my visuals into working code. I also was able to grab feedback from people on how to improve the User Experience before I put into too much work into programming the visuals.

LIMITED, SERIF EUROPE. AFFINITY DESIGNER WORKBOOK. SERIF EUROPE LTD, 2016.

Affinity Designer is the software I used to create the components I used for the Adobe XD prototype. I learned the software through this book Affinity Designer Workbook which goes step by step all the different tools that Affinity Designer provides. Affinity Designer is a cheaper alternative to Adobe Illustrator that is made especially for macOS and a tool I have been using a lot for the last 2 years.

Ludum Dare is the inspiration of this whole project and where I got a lot of inspiration for how my website will work. Ludum Dare is a 48-hour game jam that has been going on for the last couple of years which happens every couple of months. It can be done from anywhere in the world and has a couple of real-world meetups. Some of the games made on this site ended up making a big impact on gaming and I help that the same happens with my hackathon.

“How Should You Promote Your Hackathon? 8 Tips.” Westminster, westminster.impacthub.net/2014/02/04/how-should-you-promote-your-hackathon-8-tips/.

This website talks about how I can promote my Hackathon to make sure they are actually people participating in it. From this site, I know that I should make a website landing page for people to be compelled to sign up for my Hackathon also promoting that site through social media helps. Putting a Hackathon on a website that tracks what Hackathons are going on is a great way to push to outside influences.

“How to Run a Successful Hackathon.” Hackathon Guide, hackathon.guide/.

This is a well-done guide that goes over everything you need to create a successful Hackathon. Since my Hackathon will be themed I used this guide to help me create a compelling theme that is broad enough to have an unlimited amount of interpretation and solutions. It also gives some more helpful advice on how to promote my Hackathon. I also got the idea to make a chat room/slack/email for communicating with the participants.

Airlines are scrambling to train and hire young aviation professionals, and will be almost indefinitely. Aircraft manufacturers, Boeing and Airbus are projecting the industry to need 1.3 million aviation professionals, such as pilots, mechanics, and dispatchers within the next twenty years. With aviation being one of the world’s favorite forms of transportation, with 48% of American vacationers flying in airplanes for travel, it is important to sustain the industry.

Aside from transportation, aviation is used to power global commerce giants, to protect our pipelines, fight wildfires, among numerous purposes. With aviation having an employment disparity of this level, it is important to engage the next generation to fill the important needs aviation solves. Thus, aviation needs to be promoted as the welcoming field and community it is.

Unfortunately, it is hard to decide on pursuing aviation with a lack of exposure to it. It is hard to know if you enjoy flying an airplane if you don’t know what’s involved in it. The Philadelphia Youth Aviation Fair is a gathering of aviators, current and future to promote careers in aviation to the next generation. Participants in the fair will receive a complimentary flight in an airplane, a tour of the airport facilities, and access to numerous career-oriented opportunities.

Five high school students, from Science Leadership Academy experienced aviation first-hand. With the partnership of the Experimental Aviation Association, all participants are now enrolled in an online ground school and will be eligible to apply for the prestigious Ray Aviation Scholarship.

Marisa Garcia, a retired professional in the aircraft manufacturing industry provides thoughts on the impending pilot shortage. Garcia claims that airline incentives are not enough to alleviate the blow the pilot shortage will have on the commercial aviation industry. Garcia openly supports greater incentives, including a loosening of hour restrictions for airline pilots, citing 250 hours as adequate to operate a commuter aircraft. Reasoning for the removal of the 250 hour requirement is provided, considering a Colgan Air accident that occured in the year of 2009. Garcia uses this to weigh insights on how to attract young pilots to aviation.

A high-ranking Boeing 747 pilot shares his opinion on the pilot shortage on YouTube. He claims that the pilot shortage is caused by young pilots being underpaid about five years ago, which was misleading, considering the training requirements needed to become a professional pilots are so high. The pilot suggested that entry-level airlines have increased first-year salaries, and have increased signing bonuses tremendously, in order to attract younger pilots, and encourage them to continue throughout their training.

However, Kotwicki did detail that Lufthansa hires people off of the streets, and gives them a full scholarship so they can fly for Lufthansa to alleviate the pilot shortage in Germany. This reminds me of the U.S. Naval Academy. If I were to grow my capstone organization out, I might consider giving a scholarship to young pilots who are legitimately interested in aviation.

David Tulis, an independent, vintage aircraft pilot discusses Boeing’s efforts to help alleviate the effect the pilot shortage has on the industry. What Boeing highlights in their activities is that there is not only going to be a pilot shortage, but also a technician shortage, and that the industry needs both. This narrows the scope of my capstone to include discussion on more of the technical sector of aviation. What I disagree with is the venue of their efforts; an event known as EAA Airventure, the world’s largest aviation convention. The reason why young people attend Airventure is because they already are interested in aviation. Some inner city child won’t attend Airventure, considering they don’t have the interest in aviation (at least yet).

Abstract:

For my capstone, I wanted to do something for student mental health. I feel very passionate about mental health amongst students because I struggle with my own mental health and some mental illnesses. I was lucky to be able to get help, but I knew that not every kid had the same access to the help that I received. This upset me, but also led me to envision a resource in the form of a website for struggling kids who felt that they had nowhere else to turn to. I wanted to be able to provide information and advice about the things these kids were facing and point them to where they can get further help with their problems. To do this I completed extensive research on mental health and some of the most common mental illnesses that kids face. I also gathered some outside resources that people can use to find further help. My final product is a polished website that I am extremely proud of. While it is no substitute for professional assistance, I feel that my website could provide some basic information and comfort to any kids (or parents, guardians, and teachers) that need help. Throughout the process I learned a lot more about how mental illnesses can affect people. I also think I learned how to better treat myself and others who are struggling with poor mental health or a mental illness. Additionally, I improved my time management as this project spanned several months.

The reason why I picked this source is because the official “for dummies” has a guide to almost everything podcasts being no different. In the pdf it describes, what the book describes is the certain equipment and different supplies that you would need to have a nice podcast with a tolerable amount of quality. Especially because you’re having your audience listen and the only outlet for your content is audio. The “Podcast for dummies” is credible because the book has been published by official company that makes everything come up milhouse. The thickness of the book helps put the content and helpful tips into perspective.

Threw the effects of the sounds they use they talk about how making a podcast can be difficult but at the same time rewarding if you know what your doing. In podcasts of this calibre with a lot of people it becomes a little harder to edit but in my case it's a little easy because I’m only using two people, me and the guest.

For example audacity might be better for general audio editing, while the sound part of premiere might be better for adding sound effects. Running it threw both takes a while and for the project I’m doing I don’t really have time for all the editing.

This source is credible is because whyy is a U.S and has over a 100+ episodes and podcast that has been well established in the years makes everything understandable. The whyy community has a lot of people who fund it and make it as successful as it is today. I don’t get funding so I just have to do the best I can with the things I have.

In this podcast series it gives a example of low production value and a lot of people on the podcast thru online connections. All the time that is spent in talking is 3-4hrs long and doesn’t have high production value. Looking back the podcast is very lengthy about culture and the current topic of the week. In other words having a lot of people doesn’t make it better when necessary compared to other podcasts with different values and topics. Reconsidering certain ideas during or after your podcast episodes may be necessary for certain topics such as news or a joke made in bad taste.

With an official company like NPR I know this is a credible source because its an organization that is has like WHYY alot influence over america. The high quality of the audience and the guests on there are very fluent and relevant. Recreating the idea of having different people from different parts of the world that have different stories to tell. Having people talk about literature in my project gives way to different personality types and different perspectives. Npr tells me that you want to have an organized citations and a healthy long podcast you have to have fairly broad questions to ask your guest.

In this source the world podcast day describes how different podcast come into fruition but a lot of them tend to fall flat in one place or another. I learned that to have a successful podcast I have to put a lot of time to getting to know my guest before hand and make sure where on the same pace. Having two people with weird pauses will through the whole podcast off and make the listener want to do something else. Having a story that can hook someone and make them keep listening is the main idea you want to aim for when creating a podcast.

Senior Capstone

For my capstone, I decided that I wanted to be able to help make teenage struggles a little easier. We can go through things  and deal with a lot of different hardships on our own. I decided to make a pamphlet with different resources that teens may use if they are struggling with physical health, mental health, and emotional health. My pamphlet gives resources like Planned Parenthood and what things they provide for teens (boys and girls). I also put things in there like free health clinics that they can go to as well as dental work they can get done if they don’t have insurance. I provide teens with ways to get STD/STI tester for FREE as well as where they can get it cured for FREE. For women, I provided where you can free birth control and the basic exams that women need. As you flip through the pamphlet you’ll see that I have adolescent drug abuse counselors and hotlines that you may call if you are finding yourself going down that path. There’s suicide hotlines as well as people that will talk to them about the things that could possibly be going through. I decided to do this because at one point and time it was hard for me not having health insurance and things like that and I had to learn a lot of these things on my own. Last but not least I provided how you can apply for health insurance through the state once you turn 18 like I did.

Annotated Bibliography

Adolescent Doctor Steven Smitcht

He is my doctor and I will be interviewing him and asking for his honest and professional opinion. This will really help me because I need professional opinions on talking to your kids about sex. I will also be asking him about any teenage drug abuse that he has seen and some of the signs of teenage drug addiction because I know that parents don’t to just hear from me. They want to hear from someone that has been to college for these things and have degrees.

Community Service Director Kayla

I am interviewing Kayla because she works with troubled youth that has dealt with drug addiction in teens. She takes troubled teens that have been through a lot and has them do community service and also talk to other troubled teens. I know that is something that would be good for my pamphlet because it kills two birds in one stone. I know that parents may want to get their child involved in this program.

Chanell.baylor. "National Helpline." Stages of Community Readiness | SAMHSA. May 14, 2014. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.samhsa.gov/find-help/national-helpline.

The reason behind me using this source is because some kids don’t have someone to talk to about the things that they may be going through. There are sometimes deeper reasons behind kids trying and abusing drugs. Some kids could be going through many different things that they don’t know how cope with. They turn to using drugs and then as time progresses it turns into drug abuse. This will be one of my resources in my pamphlet. This is one of the things that kids can use as many times that they would like and at any time of the day.

Eyre, Linda. "How to Talk to Your Child About Sex: It's Best to Start Early, but It's Never Too Late -- A Step-by-Step Guide for Every Age." Amazon. November 29, 1999. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.amazon.com/Talk-Child-About-Step-Step/dp/1582380570.

This is a book that is found on Amazon that will mainly be geared to parents. I will also be using this inside of my pamphlet. This book tells parents the many different ways that they can approach their child about sex. She explains that it is a very important conversation that needs to be held with your child. This will be one of those things that will back up one of my opinions. I myself will talk about my feelings behind talking to your child and how my grandmother explained these things to me.

Office of Adolescent Health. "Pennsylvania Adolescent Reproductive Health Facts." HHS.gov. May 30, 2017. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.hhs.gov/ash/oah/facts-and-stats/national-and-state-data-sheets/adolescent-reproductive-health/pennsylvania/index.html.

In my pamphlet, I know that I need to have real statistics and also have facts. This website gives information that is needed to back up my teen pregnancy argument. I want parents to talk to their kids about protected sex and the resources they can use in order to prevent teen pregnancy and hopefully with using this website and the information on it I can convince parents that talking to their kids can have these rates go down. They have the race and also the ages that teen pregnancy is most common as well. They give different years and their pregnancy rates at the time.

Parenthood, Planned. "Birth Control Methods & Options | Types of Birth Control." Planned Parenthood. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/birth-control.

Birth control is one of the best things to prevent teen pregnancy. This is one of the sources that I will be using in my pamphlet for the students to educate teenage girls about birth control. This website explains the many different types of birth control as well as its side effects. Planned Parenthood allows teenage girls especially minors get free birth control. They also don’t need parents permission and they won’t turn you down if you don’t have health insurance. This is one of those things that allow young women to feel like they have some freedom over their bodies without having to go to their parents.

Parenthood, Planned. "STD Testing, Treatment & Vaccines Services." Planned Parenthood. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.plannedparenthood.org/get-care/our-services/std-testing-treatment-vaccines.

This will be in the students and the parent's pamphlet. I decided to use it in the students because Planned Parenthood allows teenagers to get free STD testing. This is a completely confidential process. They allow you to use your information and things like that when results come back. They also provide medicine to treat certain STDs for free as well. I decided to put this in the parents' pamphlet too because I feel like parents should read up about the resources that are out there for their children. I also feel like parents can take advantage of this as well.

"Philadelphia Substance Abuse Therapist - Substance Abuse Therapist Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania - Substance Abuse Counseling Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania." Psychology Today. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists/substance-abuse/pa/philadelphia.

This website will be inside the students and parents pamphlets. I decided to put this in the students is because I want them to be able to contact someone for help if they end up seeing that they need help on their own. I feel as though most of the time people don’t see when they are abusing drugs but maybe if someone sees this link and just sat back and think about their activities they may see that they have been using drugs more than recreational. I want this for parents because they most likely will be the one noticing something that is off with their child and can contact these health professionals.

"Talk to Your Kids about Sex." Healthfinder.gov. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://healthfinder.gov/HealthTopics/Category/parenting/healthy-communication-and-relationships/talk-to-your-kids-about-sex.

Although I have a resource close to this one, I decided that this will be a good source as well for parents because this website give different pointers and different ways to talk to your child. They give bullet points on different ways to talk depending on the way your child takes certain information. In this they also explain why talking to your child really makes a difference and that is something that I really wanted inside of my pamphlet. This website also gives different websites that talk about STDs very detailedly

Sex education teacher Pia Martin

I will be interviewing Mrs.Martin because she teaches sexual education to high schoolers. She talks about many different STDs and outcomes of unprotected sex. She talks about the different birth controls and places you can get them. She talks about teen drug addiction and drug addiction in general. She speaks about the real problems that people she knows has encountered.

Kimberly Gucciardi-Kriegh Capstone

For my capstone, I spent the year working on SLA’s Community Involvement Club (CIC). I scheduled volunteer opportunities that have more meaning, trained underclassmen to take over the club after I graduate, and creating a more organized system of informing students about upcoming events by making a website. The mission is to create a strong CIC staff that can reinforce the system I have been putting into place, all in hopes to improve the club and create a system that will serve the community. During CIC staff meetings, I make lesson plans for them, we brainstorm, and work on upcoming events. I have been curating a “master club document” and a club google drive folder with all the clubs contacts, advice, and steps to take. My guiding question for my capstone is “how can I create a lasting impact on the community in Philadelphia and SLA” During this capstone, I learned about how to improve my leadership skills. It was also rewarding to teach these lessons for the team and make sure they get something out of it. The most challenging part of my capstone process was having to find organizations in Philadelphia that make a real difference with organizations that fight for the homeless, rights for communities including people of color and LGBTQ+, and more. I wrote some personal reflection along with interviews from the CIC team, speaking about their experience as a leader and volunteer.

The website is constantly being updated with new events or lack thereof after the event passes and it is not necessary to promote any longer. On this website, you can find some pictures from this year's events under gallery and interviews with all the staff.

Capstone Bibliography

Bertram, Joyce. “How volunteerism can change your world” TEDxVilnius. May 5 2015.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXb6bDX9FDo

I have been apart of the Community Involvement Club at SLA since freshman year and led the club junior and senior year, this video was a nice reminder of why we volunteer and it expanded my ideas of why helping others is important. Something I discussed with my mentor is the importance of having a strong mission statement and this video gave me a lot of ideas on what could be included in one for CIC. It also expanded my knowledge behind why people volunteer. This video is what CIC is about and an inspiring message to get students to help. The speaker at this TEDtalk has gone on lots of mission trips and works at a non-profit where she gets volunteers to go on the trip.

Boyer, Nicole. “Encourage The Young Ones: Inspiring Students To Volunteer” Sadiq, Basil, Volunteer Match, January 9th 2017. https://blogs.volunteermatch.org/engagingvolunteers/2017/01/09/encourage-the-young-ones-inspiring-students-to-volunteer/

This website gave me ideas on ways to advertise volunteering to students. It expanded my perspective as to why it is important for students in particular to serve the community. It targets six different strategies and key components to making volunteering accessible and exciting to students. This site is practical to my capstone since it is tips for students. The tips given seem realistic for my project and I hope to implement some of them to my leadership skills. It gave me the idea to have some meetings with the Community Involvement Club staff and give them this information for this year and after I have graduated. The thing is, this source has great ideas but I want the SLA students to really want to volunteer. This source is very dedicated to volunteering and provides expertise on how to run non-profit organizations and ways to help locally.

Daugherty, Sue. “Food is Medicine” MANNA, Philadelphia

https://www.mannapa.org/volunteer/group-volunteers/

MANNA is really what inspired me to change the way the CIC club was organized last year. A big part of the change is finding more meaningful volunteer events to advertise. We currently have two dates for 10 SLA students per day to go work at the MANNA food kitchen close to the Franklin Institute in February. I hope the event is successful and we are able to form a relationship with them and help more people there in the future. This is an example of a local non-profit we are trying to help this year. MANNA has been accredited non-profit in Philadelphia since 1990.

Kuzma, Kay. “What Makes a Team Strong” Project Appleseed. September 1992.

http://www.appleseeds.org/team-strong.htm

While the majority of my capstone is creating a strong leadership team but this site provided me with more information about what makes a large group of people function. The CIC staff will benefit from the other tips about leadership but this source is more about the importance of organization and how to start creating systems that work for a large group of people. These are generally good skills for everyone involved in CIC to have moving forward. Project Appleseed is a nationwide non-profit that specifically helps volunteers. They specialize in educating people and hosting events on how to be a leader and help others.

“Making a difference through volunteers and nonprofit careers” Learn How to Become.

https://www.learnhowtobecome.org/volunteer-and-nonprofit-careers/

The majority of my project surrounds itself with SLA students and young people. This website provided me with more personal information. Currently, I am going into college undecided and nonprofit work is something for me to consider. This website really broke down my understanding regarding what that would mean for my future. This is something I could tell my CIC staff about if they are interested. This also provided me insight about where we are volunteering and what that means to the company involved. Learn How to Become always bases information on career experts, data, and primary sources. They are always up-to-date and is a frequent resource at Duke University, Stanford University, and more.

Reid, Stephanie. “Find Your Path to Civic Engagement” Serve Philadelphia.

https://serve.volunteermatch.org/

A large component of research for my capstone has been finding events. I have to keep in mind that the majority of us are under eighteen, we are unable to volunteer during school hours, and students at SLA come from all different areas and it would be helpful to help in a central location. This is just one of the government websites that I have found that work to help people locally. This provided me with more trustworthy websites to consult or non-profit leaders I am able to reach out to in the future. Last year, during the colder months, we hosted a school bake sale and donated the money to the National Immigration Law Center and I think doing in school events would be a convenient way for students to help out this winter.

“Serve Your Community- Cities” National Community and Service/ Americorps and Senior Corps

https://www.nationalservice.gov/serve/via/cities

Moving forward with writing my report, this site could be useful because it has volunteering statics about Philadelphia. This will most likely come up when writing my report and even if it does not it gave me information about Philadelphia residents helpful behavior that I found really interesting. I can talk about how even if people do not serve the community they do other things to help each other everyday. Since the premise of my project is helping people, this is generally good information to know. This information is from the National Community and Service that reports data and groups of people that are in need such as veterans.

“The Core Leadership Skills You Need in Every Role” Center for Creative Leadership, 2017.

https://www.ccl.org/articles/leading-effectively-articles/fundamental-4-core-leadership-skills-for-every-career-stage/

Since a large aspect of my capstone focuses on becoming a stronger leader myself and then working to train underclassmen to lead the club after I graduate, I need to dive deeper into what makes a strong and reliable leader. These tips are accessible to read and reasonable goals for us to follow which will make it easy for me to present to the CIC staff. This inspired me to present this information to them during meetings in the spring. The Center for Creative Leadership is globally recognized for promoting the power of leadership and works on teaching it to people.

Winerman, Lea. “Helping Others, Helping Ourselves” No 11, Volume 37. Page 38. American Psychological Association, December 2006.

https://www.apa.org/monitor/dec06/helping.aspx

This topic does not necessarily relate to my capstone project directly but it did give me a deeper understanding of the motives and psychology behind volunteering. It explained how in the human brain, there is a balance between actually having the compelling feeling to helping others and doing nice things to feel good about yourself. This is not something I will be presenting in my capstone but it expanded my thinking beyond my personal motive which is to actually help others. The American Psychological Association was founded at Clark University in 1892 and they are the largest professional organization of physcology.

Wu, Huiting. “Social Impact of Volunteerism” Points of Light Institute, Atlanta Georgia, August 30 2011.

http://www.pointsoflight.org/sites/default/files/site-content/files/social_impact_of_volunteerism_pdf.pdf

This was one of the most useful resources for my project. It targets the different aspects of volunteering, meaning how it affects those volunteer, the economy, nonprofits, and the people that are receiving the help. It mostly explained how it affects the people volunteering which is the basis of my project and how much it would help to create a more social atmosphere and make a club where everyone knows each other. It also provided me with some personal knowledge about the business side of non-profit work. This inspired me to think about asking teachers again if they would be interested in sponsoring our club. Right now we have a teacher sponsor but I am going to look for someone dedicated to volunteering like we had a few years ago. Points of Light Institute is a trusted non-profit started by George H. W. Bush and works to provide people with advice on how to solve social problems in our community.

Sean Johnson ( Block )

Abstract-

Hello,

My name is Sean Johnson, and for my capstone I’ve gone through many trials and tribulations to get to my final product. I am currently in the process of writing a research paper based on the topic of masculinity. Originally, I planned on producing a film involving the topic of masculinity in our community, but due to some inconveniences that film is no longer possible. Honestly, within the past six months I feel like I learned more about patience and problem solving than anything involving masculinity. I do however think that this upset was not a waste of experience, I think it served as a wake up call, to not overlook extra securities and what not.

I'm kinda screwed

Smart LED Table - Harlem Satterfield

The goal of my “Smart LED Table” is to serve as an easy-to-use platform for development both electrically and mechanically. I wanted to make something so versatile that everyone from the common man to the super nerd can get something out of it.

The LED Matrix is the key part of this project; the entire table is built around it. It serves as a screen for everything the project has to offer. Apart from displaying all of the information that the other features find, I’ve programmed it to show colorful, mesmerizing patterns that aim to entertain the user. For finding the time, I used an RTC (Real-Time Clock) chip. Once the time is set, the chip will automatically count up time from years to seconds and then the time is displayed on the LED matrix in military form (4:40 -> 16:40). I’ve also added a small temperature sensor, which (obviously) senses the temperature and displays it on the matrix . Lastly, the table can play music from an SD card while everything above is going on.

Building this table was a very lengthy and difficult process, which involved lots of prototyping and assembly. All of the pieces I cut were off by fractions of an inch. The table fell apart multiple times and several pieces of code didn’t work as intended. There are so many things I would change and so many other features I’d love to add, but I’m glad everything turned out well.

Blynk is an app that allows you to connect to a Wifi or Bluetooth device and control it via smartphone. The software really sparked my curiosity and I think I’m able to use it even if I don’t go with the NodeMCU (development board with wifi). I first learned about the app when one of my when I watched a video of one of my favorite creators build a project using it. I then decided to research more about Blynk, even downloading the app, and then I found this website, which explains all of Blynk’s functions in great detail.

This article is about using the popular LM386 chip. It explains what the chip is, what it can do, and shows a circuit that allows you to use it as an audio amplifier. It can take input from an audio jack, enhance it, and send it to a speaker. You can even control the signal’s volume and gain. This circuit would be absolutely perfect for the music portion of my table. I know I can properly integrate the circuit because I’ve successfully used it several times.

Lauryn Lewis Capstone

For my capstone project, I decided to create a project that was very dear to me. I created Krochet Kare Packages which is a project to help families heal from gun violence in the city of Philadelphia. I personally crocheted different items ranging from clothes to blankets and packaged them with motivational messages to uplift the different people/families who had been affected by gun violence. The reason that I chose to start this project was because I began to realize the lack of mental health support that people of color in Philadelphia received. I knew that I had to specify who exactly I wanted to reach out to. After reading ‘Rest In Power’, the memoir from the parents of Trayvon Martin, I decided that I should tackle a big issue, gun violence. After deciding this, I reached out to people around me who had been strongly affected by gun violence. By doing so, I was able to hear the stories of all the individuals and learn about the toll that such a traumatizing event can have on one’s mind. After hearing the stories of everyone who I planned to work with, i personalized crochet care packages for each victim. The point of the handmade crocheted items was to let those individuals know that they were not alone and to give them something that would comfort them in times of pain and or grief.

AVPPhila. (n.d.). Retrieved January 25, 2019, from http://avpphila.org/families-of-murder-victims-fmv/

AVP stands for the Anti-Violence Partnership of Philadelphia. They offer people who have lost loved ones violently counseling sessions as well as group therapy. All the services there are free because they know that a lot of people in Philly are under  ;privledged and can not afford to pay for full price services to help them cope with death. A lot of the people who organize the different sessions have personally dealt with the issues that they all are coming to get help with. Aside from helping the families of the victims with counseling they also try to help them get the people locked up for the crimes. This is a big help considering a lot of cases go unsolved.

Coping in the Aftermath of a Shooting. (n.d.). Retrieved January 25, 2019, from https://www.counseling.org/knowledge-center/coping-in-the-aftermath-of-a-shooting

Coping with a shooting surrounds almost the same things as coping with a death. Sometimes shootings even sadly end in death. It is understandable for some to want to isolate themselves from things especially like the news and other media that may be heavily discussing the incident. This can sometimes cause panic attacks and unneeded anxiety. This is really called post traumatic stress disorder which happens to some who experience traumatic events that leave a long lasting impact on them. This happens commonly in urban neighborhoods but is rarely treated. When this happens, people can turn to reacting to those events randomly because they are triggered.

Coping with Loss: Bereavement and Grief. (2015, May 01). Retrieved January 25, 2019, from http://www.mentalhealthamerica.net/conditions/coping-loss-bereavement-and-grief

This source talks more about how to deal with the death of a loved one compared to others that just talked about what happens when you a loved one dies. One major thing to do is to take care of yourself and not deprive yourself of essential things that help you survive and keep you happy. In a time of such disappointment, it makes sense to try and normalize things instead of trying to become a totally different person. Building with other people dealing with the same issue will also help the both of you cope better and share common experiences.

Crochet Therapy for Mental Health • LoveCrochet Blog. (2017, May 08). Retrieved January 25, 2019, from https://blog.lovecrochet.com/crochet-and-mental-health/

Crocheting is used as a therapy for many because of how it soothes. Different yarns have different textures which come as a healing and comfortable place for people away from their home (comfort space). Crocheting allows people to get their feelings out through the project that they are working on. Whether it be anger or even love, it allows you to express yourself when you are silenced by things that hurt you. The sensation that you get from crocheting, can heal physical pains because mentally you will be at peace and not be able to feel anything.

Crocheting For A Cause. (n.d.). Retrieved January 25, 2019, from http://thecrochetcrowd.com/placemarks/crocheting-for-a-cause/

This is a organization that does something similar to what I will do. They crochet different things for people who are usually sick or veterans and give them to them for comfort. I will be doing that but instead to a more specified crowd. They are located in Jersey and do not do any of the work for money. Everything that they do is free and from the bottom of their heart. Throughout the year, who they crochet for tends to vary because they like reaching out to certain groups and giving each of them an allotted dedication.

Family & Survivor Support. (n.d.). Retrieved January 25, 2019, from https://momocares.org/familysurvivor-support/

This service is based in North Carolina and provides some of the same services that a lot of therapist do. A lot of the services include planning memorial events such as funerals and candlelights to bring light to the people that lose their lives. This helps families feel sane because they feel like their family members do not die in vain. They want the legacies to live on and for people to especially know if the cases have not been solved and people are not paying for their ruthless actions. If the person who was killed is the only one that they had left, it gives them a chance to rebuild their family value now that a loved one is gone.

Grief & Depression Coping With Denial, Loss, Anger and More. (n.d.). Retrieved January 25, 2019, from https://www.webmd.com/depression/guide/depression-grief#1

This source talks about the process of grief and how each person may deal with it differently. Usually when you are dealing with grief there are different stages of how you accept it as well as deny it. You can lose feeling over a sensation of shock and even act as if it hasn’t happened. With this comes wishing that you may have spent more time with the person or even was there to prevent what happened. Some people even never recover from death and begin to fall into depression which can lead to suicide.

Health Benefits of Crocheting and Knitting. (n.d.). Retrieved January 25, 2019, from http://www.redheart.com/articles/health-benefits-of-crocheting-and-knitting

Crocheting helps with both long term and short term health. With crocheting comes following different patterns and motions which help with memory when it comes to getting down a routine. Physically it strengthens your hands and teaches them to have structure when it comes to other hand moving techniques. Crocheting is something that is done everywhere and even in correctional facilities to help prisoners build bonds and also social skills. In addition to this, and knowledge from the previous information that I have collected, crocheting can be obviously seen as a way to heal and even the handmade items that are made can heal.

This source talks about a young lady who had hopes to end gun violence following the death of her cousin. She created a foundation called “Erase the Rate” to try to educate people about how the death rate in Philadelphia is increasing because of senseless violence that people participate in. The sad thing about this is that people are being murdered and their murderers most of the time remain on the loose. By remaining on the loose, their is a high chance that they will strike again and senselessly murder another victim in the city. It also mentions how urban children are usually told to be strong because they can handle anything instead of actually getting help and dealing with the things that eventually haunt them.

Growing up, I watched my mom go from an amateur cook to a proprietor of her own catering company. Always being around cooking or baking started my love for the food industry. When going through the college process, I considered majoring in pastry arts. After many talks with both my parents and Ms.Hirschfield, we decided I could always start my own catering business later on in life. I took my capstone as an opportunity to practice catering and event planning. I have helped my mom with events that varied from small dinners to graduations, but I never took the responsibility of an entire order on my own. At the beginning of the year, Darlenny came up with the idea to hold a sports banquet to congratulate all of the seniors for their hard work and dedication throughout their seasons. She knew that I was deciding on catering an event for my capstone and approached me about doing the desserts for her event as well as the dessert table set up. This process will include creating a menu, designing the dessert table, and the execution of the desserts. The sports banquet will be held on May 7th so I will update this post when my presentation is finalized. I hope this event will teach me about not only a possible career, but a newfound sense of responsibility. I look forward to stepping into my mother’s shoes and testing my ability to take on a catering event.

Wes Matthews Capstone

As Philadelphia’s Youth Poet Laureate, I have been privileged enough to take on the responsibility of using poetry in active forms of community engagement. I have been in correspondence with many numerous organizations about performing and speaking at events, allowing me to connect with many parts of the city. For my capstone, I decided that I wanted to investigate the transformative power that poetry can assume in these urban communities. To do this, I facilitated a series of workshops across Philadelphia that reflect on the concepts of identity and belonging. In December, I held a meeting with the Laureate Board and discussed my intentions to run a workshop series in the Spring. I told them that I would handle promotion, facilitation, and venue inquiry. I also explained to them that my goal in doing the workshop was two-fold: for one, I wanted to cultivate young people’s confidence in their writing and ensure that their writing is worth sharing. Secondly, I wanted each workshop I conducted to involve deep self-reflection, hopefully helping some workshoppers come to a better understanding of who they are. As facilitator, I designed about 5 different workshop lessons, some designed for adolescents/adults audiences and others designed for younger children. By January, I had my schedule all worked out: I would do one workshops at YouthBuild Charter School in February, one the Ramonita Rodriguez Library and Queen Memorial Library respectively in March, one at the East Oak Lane Library in early April, and two at the Parkway Central LIbrary in mid-to-late April. Each workshop investigated a different aspect of identity somehow. For example, I had one lesson that encouraged students to critically analyze regret as a driving emotion in the human experience. I had another workshop lesson aimed for younger kids that asked students to write about all the things that they appreciate about their homes. Overall, each workshop was a success, as through this process I was able to connect with over 200 youth people throughout the city. Most importantly, it reminded me that poetry, for any age group, has the power to kindle the imagination in unique and mysterious ways, ways that sometimes we cannot even understand.

“ 6 Tips to Great Poetry Writing.” Jericho Writers, Jericho Writers, Apr. 2017,
jerichowriters.com/poetry-tips/.

This source offers advice to writers on improving and avoiding banality. It warns about dead metaphors, crutch words, archaic phrasing and more. I like it because it is simple to understand and each point seems directed to people are new to writing, and I know a lot of the people I get in workshops will be new to writing. Therefore, I want to give out the tips as a handout at the end of the workshop so that I know for sure that everybody leaves with some notes to guide them in the future. I also wish to establish that my workshops are spacing of communal learning through this.

As this source states, contemporary poetry has an unfair reputation for being boring and hard to understand. I want to combat that narrative in my capstone, and I think this source provides interesting counterpoints to it while also offering suggestions for modern poets who have gone overlooked. I figured I could use this both in my final analysis paper when I am commenting on the state of modern poetry and also at the end of every event in my series I could recommend the modern poets in the article to everyone who attended. In doing this, I hope that I can affirm that poetry is by no means dead and also encourage people to dig deep for rewarding art.

Hayden, Robert. “Those Winter Sundays by Robert Hayden.” Poetry Foundation, Liverlight Publishing Corporation, 1985, www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/46461/those-winter-sundays.

This is one of my favorite poems. It almost perfectly amalgamates the four temperaments of poetry and has been cited by numerous scholars as one of the best poems of all time. For this reason, I think it will go well with my four temperaments of poetry workshop. That is, I want to print out a copy of the poem and give one to each student so we can go through it together and annotate it, specifically taking note of how it uses story, music, structure, and imagination. I think it will work well for both experienced and inexperienced writers.

“How to Host an Event: 10 Key Tips for Success.” Billetto UK, billetto.co.uk/l/how-to-host-an-event. Web. Jan 24th, 2019.

I used this source to acquire tips for successful hosting, since I plan on hosting about 6-8 workshops and open mics in my capstone. My objective to create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, though hosting is a nerve-wracking task. I ended up finding this source useful because it offers simple but proactive measures one can take in order to make the event the best it can possibly be. These measures include simple things such as social media sharing and helping guests navigate the space. One limitation of this source is that it is very general about what kind of event; it gives no specificity for my kind of event, or a series of events.

Perhaps one of the most important sources, this website provides insight on how to lead a successful workshop with developing writers. While I have a led a few workshops in the past, I must be prepared this time around to design a workshop that can cater to all writing levels and is both enjoyable and inspirational. This article employs tactics to make workshoppers feel included but also push them to better themselves. I selected this source because of how straightforward and clear it was in its approaches and for the fact that it may help be design a well-rounded workshop that works for all ages and skill levels.

Israel, Shel. “9 Tips on Conducting Great Interviews.” Forbes, Forbes Magazine, 19 Apr. 2012, www.forbes.com/sites/shelisrael/2012/04/14/8-tips-on-conducting-great-interviews/#9b4518356f17.

This source gives information on what makes a good interviewer. I selected this source because Forbes Magazine is a well-known entity in the business world, so I was sure they would offer interesting insights. One simple tip that resonated with me is “ask what you don’t know.” So often, I feel like people conduct interviews looking for a specific answer. In my interviews, I want to let the interviewee guide the course of the questions because it truly is supposed to be a serious study. Again, one limitation of this source is connected to one of the things I liked about it—it is aimed for a population of businesspeople. I don’t want my interviews to be businesslike, I want them to be more amicable and free-flowing.

Orr, Gregory. “Four Temperaments of Poetry.” AS CHILDREN TOGETHER, mypage.siu.edu/puglove/4.htm.

I plan to use this source as a basis for my first workshop at Youthbuild. It details the four temperaments of poetry, story, music, structure, and imagination, and how they all are necessary for crafting a well-rounded poem. I think this workshop would be helpful for beginning writers because it can help them more easily identify where their writing exceeds and falls short, and they can make adjustments accordingly. I received this workshop about 3 years ago and it certainly helped me to make improvement, so now I am hoping it can do the same for others. The flaw with the workshop is that it might come off as a bit confusing for those who have no experience with writing their own material.

Phillips, Carl. The Art of Daring: Risk, Restlessness, Imagination. Graywolf Press, 2014.

This source is one of my favorite books. Poet and essayist Carl Phillips investigates the imagination in the poetry landscape and how poetry reflects aspects of the human condition—such as nostalgia, restlessness, and desire. I like the advice and guidance this book has to offer for poets and I think it would be useful for a workshop. I want to workshop using one idea specifically—his coined term of the “blues strophe” poetic form because I feel like it is a simple concept for developing writers to understand but also a technique that would push their writing in a refined direction. This would prepare me for my workshops at Youthbuild.

“Poetry through the Ages.” Animals | Causes of Color, IDEA, Jan. 2008, www.webexhibits.org/poetry/home_movements.html.

This source outlines the major movements of poetry dating back to 7th century BC Ancient Greece. It covers famous periods such as the Metaphysical movement, Transcendentalism, and the Beat movement. This source will be referenced for my final research document for providing background on the different evolutions of poetry and how certain aspects of some movements persist in writing even to this day. One of my main objectives is to contravene the delusion that poetry is a dying art form, and to do this I feel like I must first establish what the pillars of the art are. Unfortunately, this source is missing some of the major movements that I wish to reference, particularly the Harlem Renaissance and the Proletarian movement, so I will do outside research on these.

“What Is Poetry.” Poetry.org, Wikipedia, Jan. 2005, www.poetry.org/whatis.htm.

This source provides a historical background on poetry, which I plan to use when writing my research paper on my topic. It is important for me to establish for the reader a general definition of poetry, and this source will certainly help me do that. Additionally, it could help me make the argument that, contrary to popular belief, poetry is still very much alive and is not a relic of the distant past. One limitation of this source is that, of course, it cannot provide a full history of the art form and it does not conform with my biases toward urban poetry.

Deja Winfield Capstone

Abstract

For my capstone, I researched what made a community and what made a community moves forward. SLA has always been a school that believed in community-based learning. In the past four years we have built a community in which we have learned to rely on. Throughout this capstone I have spoken to students on how they felt about the move to Benjamin Franklin. I have thought much to the burden of what is going to become SLA @ BF. I created a community wall, using a piece of drywall we gave the opportunity of anyone and everyone who considered themselves part of the SLA community. I learned and wanted to explore the impact that artwork and community meant to students, because we all need something to lean back on. Art work is a big part of the world of SLA, it posted on walls and on the ceilings, you can not walk more than five feet without seeing a piece of artwork, and that is something I would liked to see continued as a tradition to the new school . And I wanted them to have something that they as a community could carry with them in the next years at the new school.

Interview: Vivian Pham- community wall Folks Arts Culture Treasures. We did this as middle schoolers. It was a stable of making me feel included at Folks Arts Culture Treasures. School was difficult when transferring to an environment I had never dealt with before. Attending a school was everyone was a different race than me, and spoke differently than me. When we were doing all of this it made the school feel more welcoming. I would like to see how it affect her as a student who had attended prior Interview:

Ethan L.- What art means to him? How does artwork define him? Artwork is such a big part of Ethan’s life. If he is seen drawing he can be seen making himself happy with another form of his artwork. Art has been his world at sla being a part of the music club and part and art for years. His interview will show the impact of art for students. Arts Integration In School: 10 Reasons Why It's Important.” Seneca Academy, www.senecaacademy.org/10-reasons-why-integrating-art-is-important-in-school/. Art is a big part of so many lives. Art is the foundations for some peoples happiness, art is an expression of who we are and a way to share it that more personal than spoken word. Our artwork is a piece of us that we are leaving to interpretation. It is an expression of anger, guilt, sacrifice, happiness, stability, or many more emotions. Art is fluid. Many students within Science Leadership Academy rely on their artwork as their form of sanity and safety. Losing expression already maybe hard for the students, but to carry a small staple of Science Leadership Academy with these small tiles, will make a big impact.

 BahaiTeachings.org. “Community Building with Socially-Engaged Art.” YouTube, YouTube, 9 Aug. 2018, www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVUFbvRt7tA.

The strengthening a community due to community art. People have so many differences, talents are unique and no one is the same. The world of art is multidimensional. Everyone has a form of an artist in them so allowing people of different skills, build a piece together, can allow people push boundaries with one another and it allows them to get to know each other without words having to be exchanged. The exchange of personality and creation can push people together and get communities to be homes. A way to make communities feel welcoming and safe.

This is talking about how charter schools are allowing more people into it. and how this expansion on the school effect the students. Does it hurt the students to add so many random faces? And the reaction students have to new students. The first few weeks become weeks of scooping out the new students to find which cliques they will fall in. some students to feel ostracised. They must find their place very early between the new crowd.

Personal thoughts on being a new student in the middle of your high school life. High school is already really difficult for most students who struggle with assignments, friendships and finding out what they would like to do with their futures. Students are already dealing with the struggles of daily life. This is someones personal story on what they didn’t expect. Science Leadership Academy has tried to prepare everyone for what they expect, but for each student, there’s going to be unexpected.

This is an older journal that shows the importance of growth in a community. Linear growth while expected can take to be a very long process, and linear functions can have a linear-plateau. Sometimes an exponential growth, as well as a growth mindset, is needed. Anything that can bring them closer quicker may be the best thing for the students. Being in an uncomfortable situation for both sets of these students could cause for a arise of problems.

Many students are going through daily struggles in their lives. Many will struggle with depression anxiety. As well as many will experience homelessness, grief, abuse, and a change in environment can make the aftermath of these situations worse. In this Ted talk, we get to see the story of Jonathan Wynn. A man who experienced homelessness in high school. He alongside his mother struggle financially. They couldn’t get ends to meet. He struggled to keep the fursona of happiness. His mother said he should try and find to way to help someone else. He could barely get his feet off the floor at 17. He found a love of music during all of his stays in his mother’s car. He brought his voice into school and brought his artform into a safe he didn't always feel safe in. He refound his happiness with school when he brought his art form in and shared it with his schoolmates.

“Tile Wall Project.” Create. Discover. Play. with the Wheaton Park District!, National Association of Parks Foundation, wheatonparkdistrict.com/facilities/community-center/tile-wall-project/. The Wheaton area had had a recent influx of new mover into the area. This community became split into two separate communities. It became a world of cliques between the new and old members of the community. People stayed within their grouping avoiding the opposite. The newer members didn’t feel included in the community as a whole. They have a part of their own clique. Fearfully this could be the situation with the current move to Benjamin Frankin High School. The Wheaton Parks and Recreations Department made the decision to bring togetherness. They created a community tile wall that allowed everyone to share a personal part of themselves. Science Leadership Academy is known for its artwork. It may make the tradition easier for students of both schools if they know they share something within the building.

“What Is a Community School?” Coalition for Community Schools - Because Every Child Deserves Every Chance, www.communityschools.org/aboutschools/what_is_a_community_school.aspx.

This website shows why children need a community to strive in schools. This article while on alternative schooling, where members of the community help each other move forward in the people they become. With a form of collaboration from every member of the society does make the community feel safer and more welcoming. The students in this alternative school while a bit younger than the students of Science Leadership Academy and Benjamin Franklin, they were not so much younger that the information within the website would become null and void, the website spoke on middle schools (students age 11-14). If we can make these transitions easier for students than we have to make it as easy as we can.

Brendan Hall Capstone

Initially for my capstone I was unsure whether or not to make a music blog for the project or submit my own music. I ended up doing both and described how the process of creating music has led to me gaining confidence and coping with personal issues. While on the other hand I was able to do research on how music can boost academic and emotional atributes with young people. I also provided an outlet for people passionate about music within the SLA community to share their story on how it has positively impacted them. Finally, I recommended albums on my website that I believe can make people become aware of human issues while giving them emotionally relatability. My inquiry question was, "How can music positively affect someone on an intellectual and emotional level?". Through my capstone I was able to discover that music can depict social issues enhacing their intellect while also providing shared emotional experiences with others that would likely not exist.
