Elona Myftaraj Capstone

Posted by Elona Myftaraj in Capstone - Latimer on Thursday, June 7, 2012 at 8:12 am
My capstone is a written play.
For my capstone I wrote a serious of plays interconnected to each other. I wanted to create something that was meaningful to me as well as enjoyable. I did a lot of brainstorming the genre I wanted to write as well as the characters I wanted to portray. The process to complete my project was long and at times difficult. Through this project I learned to overcome writers block and being shy about asking for help

Election Country Project

Posted by Elona Myftaraj in Globalization - Laufenberg on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 12:31 pm
BY: Elona M. Robert B. Gil G.

For this project we were assigned a country in order to learn about their election process for electing their president, and find someone in that country to ask questions to a second person in the country about the presidential elections. The ones we contact in the country could be anything from, a school/ offices/ business and average people. The election country that we were assigned was S.Korea. Through our research we found that S.Korea's president is elected through a plurality vote and serves a single five year term. We also found that their Presidential election are going to be held in December 2012 and that they recently had an election for the National Assembly in April 2012. The person I contacted for help with this project was through facebook.

Conversation with S.Korean Citizen:

After sending him the questions and having the set up ready he unfortunately backed out on us and was unable to help. We contacted sever agencies as well however there was no response from them as well.

After the project I realized that there were many di fferences between the S.Korean and the American election systems, such as in the states a president can serve for two terms four years each, but in S.Korea they only serve one term of five years. I also noticed that their National Assembly has an important role in th e country.

There were many ups and downs in the process, for anyone doing this project I would tell them to keep in mind the language and time barriers, the time difference is very different and that was also a big issue for us. I did however learn a lot through this process including finding a person around the world that can help.

Globalization Benchmark

Reflection on project:

Some of the most challenging parts of this project were finding what part of globalization that we learned in class to use and to pick from and collecting the images. To collect the images we had to take the pictures ourselves but I dont have a very good camera so that posed a problem and my favorite image in the project is one of a child's hands holding the American Flag as it is growing out of her hands, its a little hard to describe but that is my favorite picture, mostly because it fits perfectly with what I was trying to explain about globalization in that section of my benchmark. I personally believe that evidence of globalization in Philadelphia is greater then that of other states because Philadelphia was the first city created and it hold the most history. I learned a lot through this project, inclulding how to connect globalization to different places in Philadelphia, and the process of finding the places I need in order to best explain Globalization.

World of 100

Posted by Elona Myftaraj in Globalization - Laufenberg on Monday, February 20, 2012 at 4:50 pm
In class we were given an assignment called world of 100, in this we had to imagine that there were only 100 people in the world and spilt up those people into different categories to see the global issues. There was a number of categories that included demographics, education levels, gender roles and more. The categories I focused on for this project were gender/education, age, and technology. At first I thought the assignment was to split up the 100 people into categories that I thought they should be in so I was incorrect in my graphs, however, I found that when redoing the assignment I was very close to what the world issues are today. Because I have had several classes where world view was an important aspect, I felt more informed about global issues when it came to this assignment. I felt that I was most accurate when predicting the technology rates and education then I was with predicting the average ages. I found this assignment to be very interesting I felt that I learned something knew and had fun doing it. I was very surprised to see the education differences between genders. I hope to try this assignment again to see if I will be more accurate in some categories.

History Benchmark Q2- Women's Rights

http://www.schooltube.com/video/94e0f18067e246029059/

I chose this topic because women's rights is something important to me, as well as a delicate subject. I wanted my project to serve as a reminder of all of the hardships women have gone through in the past in order to be seen as equal. What I like the most about the project is the examples of historical women I've used as examples as well as all of the background research. Something that was challenging in creating this project was picking the perfect sound track and the format in which to present it. One of the most interesting things I came across was the fact that women almost gave up on equal rights several times as well as during WW1. I feel that this project could improve with more description. I did not put as much words in the final presentation as I originally planned. Something new that I tried was using C-Span for this project and I feel that it could have gone better. Overall I really enjoyed this project I felt that it was a very nice change and it really resonated with me. I  now value women's more then ever.

Marriage project-Reflection

Posted by Elona Myftaraj in American Government - Laufenberg on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at 11:12 am
For this project my partner and I decided to file for marriage papers. We searched online in order to find the paperwork but we couldnt. We discussed it with our teacher and decided to give them a call. When I called the office the first thing they asked was whether the two people getting married were over 18 and then a list of things I'd need to bring down to their offices in order to legalize the marriage. I didnt have much of a chance to speak and got a little confused. I tried to get my teacher on the phone, but it was something I had to do myself. I found that I could not get a copy of the papers, in order to even see the papers we had to actually get married. By the time I got back on the phone the lady hung up on me. I then tried again the next day and received some information we needed to complete our project but were still unable to see the documents. Our final product was based on our process and all other data we gathered. I found this project very informative, different and very nice to work with because I now know the process one has to take in order to be legally married.

Court Case

Posted by Elona Myftaraj in American Government - Laufenberg on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at 11:01 am

Case 10-948- CompuCredit Corporation v. Greenwood.

Cheif Justice John G. Roberts

According to http://www.scotusblog.com/case-files/cases/compucredit-corp-v-greenwood/?wpmp_switcher=desktop

my case is "Whether claims arising under the Credit Repair Organizations Act, 15 U.S.C. § 1679 et seq., are subject to arbitration pursuant to a valid arbitration agreement."

The decision made by the courts was that the federal statutes that both create a right to sue also bar waiver of rights under thee statute are sufficiently explicit to override the strong federal policy in favor of arbitrability expressed in the federal arbitration act. The relative language is virtually indistinguishable from that and the credit repair organization fact that we have before us today the cases inclide the ADEA and CROA which create a cause of action for aggrivated parties to bring actions for damages and both statutes explicitly bar waiver of quote "any right under the statute. Well, that statute didn't have as this one has a disclosure requirement that says you have a right to sue. And that's the sole distinction between the two statutes. So the -- first of all the disclosure statute is a -- describes in layman's terms, gives a quick description of an operative civil liability section which is set out in 1679(g) and which tells us exactly what Congress had in mind in creating a cause of action. And when you look at the language of the actual operative provisions in (g), it's almost as if Congress deliberately went out of its way to use language that would not preclude arbitration. The Supreme Court's decision will clarify the extent of the federal policy favoring arbitration and will elucidate how consumers may proceed against credit repair organizations under the CROA.
The decision the court made is not really clear basically, they were both in the wrong to certain dagree, the wording used in both documents was almost identical, and there was a part in their documents saying that they did not have the right to sue the other party.

Lobbying post 4 Letter to representatives

Posted by Elona Myftaraj in American Government - Laufenberg on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at 8:32 am

For the fourth part of this lobbying assignment I decided to contact, Council Woman Joan L. Krajewski. She is the one that represents my district, district 6. Council Woman Joan L. Krajewski is the Vice-chairwoman of the public safety committee,  "She sits on the Committees of Public Property and Public Works, Licenses and Inspections, Public Safety, Fiscal Stability, Legislative Oversight and Disabled and Handicapped. She was first elected councilwoman in 1979 and has since continued on  a similar path. She was the first woman in Philadelphia City Council history to hold the position of Majority Leader. I also found out that she grew up in the same neighborhood as me and I found that very interesting.

Council Woman Joan L. Krajewski is one of the people that is directly responsible to me. I was hesitant in contacting her, for I was unsure of the method to use. I then decided on writing a letter, I came to the realization that it takes a long time for the letter to get through. In order to inquire regarding my topic I contacted her through phone, and email as well as the letter. I also forwarded the email out to the governor and our city's mayor; they have yet to reply to me.

In the letter I wrote, my reason for contacting them, along with links and a summery of my previous blog posts. In the letter I explained the safety in schools problem and how much education reform is needed, along with statistics on the high school drop out rates. And proposed several changes in order to better a students school life. I am still waiting for a reply from any or all of my representatives and am hoping for a positive response.

The letter I wrote:

Dear Representatives:

My name is Elona Myftaraj, I a senior at Science Leadership Academy. I am working on a project, and lobbying for education reform is my main point. I am contacting you because you are my representative and I hope it wont take too much of your time to reply to me. I am contacting you in order to discuss, and make aware a few serious problems in our school system. "Across United States public schools, just 74.9 percent of students who were freshmen in the fall of 2004 graduated from high school on time in 2008, according to a report from the National Center for Education Statistics." There have been many school related incidents that I fear has many students feel that they are not in a safe environment. This is a link to a blog post I wrote on education reform, and suggestions for change. http://www.scienceleadership.org/blog/Lobbying-_Education_Reform:2

A perfect example of my lobbying topic is the violence erupted at South Philadelphia high school where off-campus and lunchrooms attacks targeted about 50 Asian students, injuring 30, primarily by African-American students. The Asian students boycotted classes for more than a week after the attack, stating that they had endured relentless bullying by African-American students while school officials did nothing about their complaints. I want there to be a change in education and in schools because there are many kids that come from "The Hood" or bad neighborhoods, and I believe that schools should be a safe haven as much as a place of learning, kids need to have a place or person they trust and I believe that this is a part of a teachers job.

I feel that it is incidents such as this that make students loose faith in schools and the school system. Therefore I am asking for your help to actively join me in taking action for education reform and an accurate schedule along with locations for public meetings regarding education reform.

Thank you in advance

Sincerely

~ Elona Myftaraj

Lobbying education reform 3

Posted by Elona Myftaraj in American Government - Laufenberg on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at 9:49 pm
The status of my lobbying topic, education reform is not doing very well as of this year. There has not been much change between the committee and council members that support my topic. There has been a lot of talk but no real action with education reform. President Obama gave a speech in July of 2011 and again on september 23 2011, stating that his administration would provide relief from the no child left behind act, he directed secretary Duncan to move forward with plans to provide flexibility to states looking for greater relief under the law, this law was supposed to make sure that every child got an excellent education.
Even though this was set to take place, very little change to be seen. In fact there has been more negative change then positive. Because of the failing economy the Pennsylvania public schools with about $1.5 billion in education sector cuts and a 50% cut for state-owned/funded four-year colleges. This has caused many several schools such as Cardinal Dougherty to shut down. There has been a lot of talk and few meeting about education reform, but no real action has taken place to benefit education.

I also found several places during my search, places that I could visit in order to sit in on the meetings regarding education reform. At some of these place if and when I get a chance to speak I will bring up foreign education systems. What is working for the other countries such as Germany, South Korea, and Japan that is not working for the states. During these meeting I also wish to bring up the case of the feeling that the schools bring to kids, and whether we should change it. Whether we want the kids to fear or feel safe in schools, are all things to bring up.                                                                                                                      The representation of US schools in the world community is also of concern and something that should be discussed.  The fact that neighborhood schools in the states are in conditions compared to at times worse then jail is a growing concern. In the past being educated and able to attend school was a privilege and a dream for a lot of kids, now days it is seen as a nightmare waiting to end. Its time to change the views students have on school to a positive one.

History Of A Bill-BM

Posted by Elona Myftaraj in American Government - Laufenberg on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at 7:43 pm
The legislature law I decided to focus on was the Fair Labor Standards Act and Equal Pay Act I made a video comparing types of jobs that both man and woman were subjected to and man get payed more for. The fact that woman and man both worked in the same fields doing the same jobs and making a lot less. I found the reason behind women making less money in the same field was because  women were seen as the home makers so they didn't belong in the workforce, and giving them a much lower salary was to discourage them from working. I told the story of my bill  then telling a story of my bill  from where it started off, to the bumps on the road and to what it has become today. I have found many sources to help with this project including the child labor laws of the time and the changes that occurred because if the child labor laws.

Lobbying- Education Reform

Posted by Elona Myftaraj in American Government - Laufenberg on Monday, October 17, 2011 at 12:00 pm
The United States of America. Hearing these words used to make other nations tremble, but now we are falling behind on education because the students don't feel compelled enough to learn. Comparing America to Asia and Europe our primary and secondary education standards have been increasingly decreasing. For example a school in Asia had a higher rate in test score then one in Europe. Several places in Asia require students go to school year round, in South Korea the students are in school from 8am to 5pm everyday and many stay much later for study. Europe ranging from around 4-8 hours per day.

I want to lobby for the better education reform so that the U.S will once again be the greatest nation for education. We all know that the universities in the U.S are the greatest, but I believe that fundamental education should be just as important. We know that we have Harvard, Yale, Princeton and many more incredible universities but we are laking in elementary, middle and high schools were the students will feel secure and willing to learn instead of  feeling forced to.

There are of course high schools that graduate students that end up attending these Ivey League universities, but what about the rest, what happens to the students that don't get into big named school, and not to mention the students that drop out of high school all together. I believe there needs to be an education reform, we need to create more schools such as Science Leadership Academy were the students feel welcome, were the teachers are first our teachers, our friends , our councilors, our back up, our safe place.

In January of 2010 violence erupted at South Philadelphia high school  where off-campus and lunchrooms attacks targeted about 50 asian students, injuring 30, primarily by African-American students. Some of the main supporters for my lobbying idea are the Education Reform Center, and the Education Reform now Foundation. One of the biggest posing challenges for this however, is the budget crisis, schools have had to lay-off teacher because they cant afford to pay them, and some of the neighborhood high schools cant even afford supplies needed for every student let alone higher teachers. The United States needs to spend more money on education because it is one most important things that keeps the nation together. And it is necessary for the continues growth of a nation and the well being and comfortable life for its people.

Spanish Benchmark Q4

Esto es el link por mi proyecto:

Reflection:

 Reflection :

My favorite part of the project has creating my own history. Originally I thought "Hey I know a lot about WW1, lets do something about that" only to find out I was kidding myself. Yes, I knew a lot about WW1 but nothing compared to what I learned through this project, I think that one of the most challenging things for me were coming up with my own history, I enjoyed it the most but also had the hardest time coming up with what primary source documents I was going to make, and whether to make the US the good guy, or the bad guy, it was a long thought process.
I think that one of the most interesting facts I learned was that the man in charge of hiring and preparing the assassination of Franz Ferdinand archduke of Austria-Hungary, was the chief of the intelligence department of the Serbian army, Dragutin Dimitrijevic, whom surly enough was also the leader of "the black hand," "the name of a secret military society in the Serbian army in the kingdom of Serbia." I learned that the actions of one individual make a huge difference, especially since World War one started because of the murder of an individual, and because of the man that pulled the trigger. Systematic changes impact our history by determining and effecting the way of life of not only an individual but for the whole nation. One decision in history can be so influential that it leads man to do from the unthinkable acts to the most kind and gentle, two perfect examples of this are, Hitler and Mother Teresa.
I really enjoyed working on this project, I learned a lot through it. I think that if I included music in the final presentation it would have helped a lot, there are a lot of silent pieces and I thought they would have been good for dramatic effect, but I'm not sure if everyone will think of it the same way I do. If I had a do over one thing I would change about my process would be my organizing the information I gathered, if I had done so from the beginning I wouldn't have as much of a panic when it came time to put everything together.

Emyftaraj Musical instrument blog #2

Posted by Elona Myftaraj in Physics - Echols on Sunday, June 5, 2011 at 3:21 pm
I said in the last blog that I was making a guitar however I decided to change my instrument since. Instead I will be making a xylophone. Reading up and researching the xylophone I found that like other instruments you have to be careful building for it is simple mistakes that can ruin the melody. I found that in building a xylophone all of the keys are different sizes and each one plays a different note, this is somethingI thought to be very helpful for someone that doesn't play an instrument. I also found that it can be built from various materials, including wood, plastic bottles with different amounts of water and metal, this also made it easier to get the supplies. I also found that this instrument can play majority of the major notes needed to perform our song.

Physics instrument

Making instruments

Personally I feel making a guitar would be the best way to bring physics into this project. With this we can measure the wave lengths of different tone and notes.
A guitar is played by tugging on the strings to make sound, you can manipulate the sound by placing your fingers at the top of the guitar and changing the notes. Im thinking of making an average guitar and this is how its shaped.

jazzcity

I was initially hoping to make a drum type of instrument because I really enjoy the drums however since we can not I decided to go with the guitar, with this instrument you can hit the wood area and different other places on the guitar to make different beats and I really like that about it.

I chose this instrument because it is fun to play and something I enjoy.

Reflection

Worst man made disaster in US history: Tennessee Coal ash spill

Posted by Elona Myftaraj in American History - Laufenberg on Friday, May 6, 2011 at 10:47 am
This is a screen shot of our history project; our project consists of the governments handle of the situation, whats going on now and the who, what, where, when and why involved. Our topic was the worst man made disaster in US history the Tennessee Coal Ash Spill.

Reflection:

Our group had a slow start with this project but in the end we pulled through. I learned a lot about the Tennessee Coal Ash Spill and much about the disasters that other students presented. We had a few ups and downs, especially meeting deadlines we set for each other but we collaborated and found incredible amounts of information to learn from. I think if we could have been a little more organized if we practiced before presenting but it was a lot better the second time around.
Because most of us were doing individual research and it was all put together by one person, while presenting we were a little unorganized.  However by the second time we had everything together and could tell our story.
I think that if everyone would be a little more creative during the infograph part it would have made our project much more attractive.
Be Concise
Be Visual
Be Smarter
Be Transparent
Be Different
Be Accurate
Be Attractive
Be Varied
Be Gracious
Be Creative

I think we worked very well with being concise,  different, smarter, accurate,  visual, varied, creative, and attractive.  Maybe not so much in the transparent and gracious, because as I said before the first group we presented to was a little messy but got a lot better after the that. I dont think we put up enough information in order to be transparent and im not sure how we could have been gracious in this project.

Reflection:Novelas

Posted by Elona Myftaraj in Spanish Literature - Gierke on Monday, March 28, 2011 at 8:47 pm

Differences in prices:1920's Vs. 2011

Posted by Elona Myftaraj in American History - Laufenberg on Sunday, March 27, 2011 at 6:12 pm
Primary sources:

I chose to focus on cars, shoes and food because I thought those would be the most interesting. First the car advertising;

Screen shot 2011-03-27 at 6.18.10 PM

As you can see the advertizing techniques, car models, car types, shapes sizes, have all changed but I think that what has changed the most is the prices.

Depending on the type of car the prices for new cars average between 15,000$ and well into the millions while in the 1920’s the average cost for new cars was  $240 which is about $2,696 today.

Next up the shoes:

                                                                                                                       1920’s Vs. 2011

Screen shot 2011-03-27 at 6.19.28 PM

Again I looked at the prices of each item and found that the prices of designer shoes in the 1920’s were valued at no more the 50$ while the prices for designer shoes today average between 100$ to well over 50,000$

And last but not least Food:

                                                                    1920’s Vs. 2011

Screen shot 2011-03-27 at 6.21.55 PM

You can clearly see the difference the 1920’s have all of the meats, fruits, and vegetables in one place, while 2011 everything is separated by category to avoid contamination and all are well refrigerated and covered, while in the 1920’s everything is placed out on a table.

Las munecas de la mafia: Reflection 2

Posted by Elona Myftaraj in Spanish Literature - Gierke on Sunday, March 27, 2011 at 5:05 pm
